Background: Ionizing radiation-induced lung injury is caused by the initial inflammatory reaction and leads to advanced fibrosis of lung tissue. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are a type of mesenchymal stem cell that can differentiate into various functional cell types with broad application prospects in the treatment of tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to explore the protective effect of ASCs against radiation-induced lung injury and to provide a novel basis for prevention and treatment of radiation-induced lung injury. Materials and methods: Fifty mice were randomly divided into a control group (Ctrl), radiation exposure group (IR), radiation exposure plus ASC treatment group (IR + ASC), radiation exposure plus L-257 group (IR + L-257), and radiation exposure plus ASC treatment and L-257 group (IR + ASC + L-257). Mice in IR, IR + ASC, and IR + ASC + L-257 groups were exposed to a single whole-body dose of 5 Gy X-rays (160 kV/25 mA, 1.25 Gy/min). Within 2 h after irradiation, mice in IR + ASC and IR + ASC + L-257 groups were injected with 5 × 106 ASCs via the tail vein. Mice in IR + L-257 and IR + ASC + L-257 groups were intraperitoneally injected with 30 mg/kg L-257 in 0.5 mL saline. Results: The mice in the IR group exhibited lung hemorrhage, edema, pulmonary fibrosis, and inflammatory cell infiltration, increased release of proinflammatory cytokines, elevation of oxidative stress and apoptosis, and inhibition of the dimethylarginine dimethylamino hydratase 1 (DDAH1)/ADMA/eNOS signaling pathway. ASC treatment alleviated radiation-induced oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation, and restored the DDAH1/ADMA/eNOS signaling pathway. However, L-257 pretreatment offset the protective effect of ASCs against lung inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Conclusions: These data suggest that ASCs ameliorate radiation-induced lung injury, and the mechanism may be mediated through the DDAH1/ADMA/eNOS signaling pathway.

Objective: The prognostic factors for elderly patients with cervical cancer differ from those of younger patients. Competitive risk events could cause biases in the Cox proportional hazards (PH) model. This study aimed to construct a competitive risk model (CRM) nomogram for patients aged > 65 years with nonmetastatic cervical cancer. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and a total of 1856 patients from 18 cancer registries across the United States diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 were included. Kaplan–Meier analysis and log-rank tests were used to compare intergroup survival. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional regression analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic factors. The cumulative incidence function (CIF) and Fine and Gray's test were used to determine the impact of competitive risk events on prognosis. The CRM nomogram was internally and externally validated using time-dependent receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve (time-AUC), Brier scores, Harrell's concordance index (C-index), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Analyses revealed that histology, age, the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) stage, number of in situ malignancies, chemotherapy, radiotherapy (RT), and surgery were independent prognostic factors. The CRM nomogram accurately predicted 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS). The C-indexes and Brier scores of the CRM nomogram were 0.641 and 0.094, respectively, at the 1-year cut-off in the training set. The time-AUC of the CRM nomogram at the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year intervals in the training set were 77.6%, 77.3%, and 74.5%, respectively. The calibration curve demonstrated a favorable concordance. DCA suggested that the nomogram had a good net benefit. Therefore, the Cox model underestimated the weight of risk factors compared to CRM. Conclusions: This study presents the CRM nomogram to predict DSS in patients aged > 65 years with nonmetastatic cervical cancer. It can help clinicians implement more accurate personalized diagnostic and treatment modalities for elderly patients with cervical cancer.

Background/Aims: The synthesis and degradation processes involved in bone remodeling are critically regulated by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The GLP-1 receptor agonist Exendin-4 is beneficial for osteoblast differentiation and increases the number of osteoblasts. Methods: We constructed an ovariectomized model to evaluate the impact of Exendin-4 on bone formation in osteoporosis. A macrophage-depleted model was also created to investigate the effect of macrophages on bone formation. Thirty-two female WT C57BL/6 mice (aged 3 months) were randomly assigned to a normal control group and four ovariectomized (OVX) subgroups: OVX + vehicle group, OVX + Exendin-4 (4.2 µg/kg/day) group, OVX + chloride phosphate liposome group and OVX + chloride phosphate liposome + Exendin-4 group. Results: In this study, we found that Exendin-4 not only increased the number of osteoblasts and decreased the number of osteoclasts, but also increased the number of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) at the bone surface. Moreover, we found that OVX mice treated with Exendin-4 increased TGF-β1 levels at the bone surface compared with that in OVX mice. Besides, Exendin-4 promoted the polarization of bone marrow-derived macrophages into M2 subtype and increased TGF-β1 secretion by the M2 subtype. Finally, we found that Exendin-4 induced macrophage polarization via the cAMP-PKA-STAT3 signaling pathway. Conclusion: Exendin-4 promotes bone marrow-derived macrophage polarization to the M2 subtype and induces BMSC migration to the bone surface via PKA-STAT3 signaling.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are important nosocomial pathogens and the leading cause of sepsis. The second most frequently implicated species, after Staphylococcus epidermidis, is Staphylococcus haemolyticus. However, we have a significant lack of knowledge about what causes virulence of S. haemolyticus, as virulence factors of this pathogen have remained virtually unexplored. In contrast to the aggressive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, toxin production has traditionally not been associated with CoNS. Recent findings have suggested that phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs), amphipathic peptide toxins with broad cytolytic activity, are widespread in staphylococci, but there has been no systematic assessment of PSM production in CoNS other than S. epidermidis. Here, we identified, purified, and characterized PSMs of S. haemolyticus. We found three PSMs of the β-type, which correspond to peptides that before were described to have anti-gonococcal activity. We also detected an α-type PSM that has not previously been described. Furthermore, we confirmed that S. haemolyticus does not produce a δ-toxin, as results from genome sequencing had indicated. All four S. haemolyticus PSMs had strong pro-inflammatory activity, promoting neutrophil chemotaxis. Notably, we identified in particular the novel α-type PSM, S. haemolyticus PSMα, as a potent hemolysin and leukocidin. For the first time, our study describes toxins of this important staphylococcal pathogen with the potential to have a significant impact on virulence during blood infection and sepsis.

Bacterial sepsis is a major killer in hospitalized patients. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) with the leading species Staphylococcus epidermidis are the most frequent causes of nosocomial sepsis, with most infectious isolates being methicillin-resistant. However, which bacterial factors underlie the pathogenesis of CNS sepsis is unknown. While it has been commonly believed that invariant structures on the surface of CNS trigger sepsis by causing an over-reaction of the immune system, we show here that sepsis caused by methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis is to a large extent mediated by the methicillin resistance island-encoded peptide toxin, PSM-mec. PSM-mec contributed to bacterial survival in whole human blood and resistance to neutrophil-mediated killing, and caused significantly increased mortality and cytokine expression in a mouse sepsis model. Furthermore, we show that the PSM-mec peptide itself, rather than the regulatory RNA in which its gene is embedded, is responsible for the observed virulence phenotype. This finding is of particular importance given the contrasting roles of the psm-mec locus that have been reported in S. aureus strains, inasmuch as our findings suggest that the psm-mec locus may exert effects in the background of S. aureus strains that differ from its original role in the CNS environment due to originally "unintended" interferences. Notably, while toxins have never been clearly implied in CNS infections, our tissue culture and mouse infection model data indicate that an important type of infection caused by the predominant CNS species is mediated to a large extent by a toxin. These findings suggest that CNS infections may be amenable to virulence-targeted drug development approaches.

Many estuaries experience eutrophication, deoxygenation and warming, with potential impacts on greenhouse gas emissions. However, the response of N2O production to these changes is poorly constrained. Here we applied nitrogen isotope tracer incubations to measure N2O production under experimentally manipulated changes in oxygen and temperature in the Chesapeake Bay--the largest estuary in the United States. N2O production more than doubled from nitrification and increased exponentially from denitrification when O2 was decreased from >20 to <5 micromolar. Raising temperature from 15° to 35°C increased N2O production 2-to 10-fold. Developing a biogeochemical model by incorporating these responses, N2O emissions from the Chesapeake Bay were estimated to decrease from 157 to 140 Mg N year-1 from 1986 to 2016 and further to 124 Mg N year-1 in 2050. Although deoxygenation and warming stimulate N2O production, the modeled decrease in N2O emissions, attributed to decreased nutrient inputs, indicates the importance of nutrient management in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, potentially mitigating climate change. Abstract Fish diversity, an important indicator of aquatic ecosystem health, is declining due to water pollution, overfishing, climate change, and invasive species. Effective surveying and monitoring are required to protect fish diversity. Here, a high-sensitivity environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding technique was used to investigate fish diversity in the Danjiang River, Shaanxi Province, China. In total, 59 species were identified in eight orders, 19 families, and 40 genera. Cypriniformes and Perciformes were the main groups in the survey area, while Cyprinidae accounted for 50.85% of the total fish species. Rhinogobius similis (19%), Hemibarbus umbrifer (11%), Gnathopogon herzensteini (10%), Triplophysa stewarti (8%), and Zacco platypus (7%) were the dominant species. Eight rare and two exotic fish species were identified. Combined with analysis of historical data, the richness of fish identified using eDNA metabarcoding was significantly higher than that of fish captured in ground cages. Temperature, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential are the main environmental factors that affect the spatial distribution of fish communities. These results suggest that eDNA metabarcoding could be a new tool with broad application prospects; however, local databases must be improved. This study provides theoretical data and a methodological reference for protecting and managing fish diversity in the Qinling Mountains.

Abstract We present the discovery and characterization of a new multi-planetary system around the Sun-like star K2-360 (EPIC 201595106). K2-360 was first identified in K2 photometry as the host of an ultra-short-period (USP) planet candidate with a period of 0.88 d. We obtained follow-up transit photometry, confirming the star as the host of the signal. High precision radial velocity measurements from HARPS and HARPS-N confirm the transiting USP planet and reveal the existence of an outer (non-transiting) planet with an orbital period of $$\sim$$ ∼ 10 d. We measure a mass of $$7.67 \pm 0.75$$ 7.67 ± 0.75 $$M_{\oplus }$$ M ⊕ and a radius of $$1.57 \pm 0.08$$ 1.57 ± 0.08 $$R_{\oplus }$$ R ⊕ for the transiting planet, yielding a high mean density of $$11 \pm 2$$ 11 ± 2 g $$\hbox {cm}^{-3}$$ cm - 3 , making it the densest well-characterized USP super-Earth discovered to date. We measure a minimum mass of $$15.2 \pm 1.8$$ 15.2 ± 1.8 $$M_{\oplus }$$ M ⊕ for the outer planet, and explore a migration formation pathway via the von Zeipel–Kozai–Lidov (ZKL) mechanism and tidal dissipation.

Purpose Arthroscopic Bankart repair combined with remplissage and autologous scapular spine bone grafting have been described as a treatment for off‐track Hill–Sachs lesions with subcritical glenoid bone defects in the anterior shoulder instability. However, whether these two techniques can achieve satisfactory postoperative outcomes is unclear, and there are few comparative studies between them. Therefore, this study compared the postoperative efficacy of the two techniques for off‐track Hill–Sachs lesions with subcritical glenoid bone loss. Method Between June 2017 and December 2020, 62 patients with shoulder instability due to Off‐Track Hill–Sachs lesions with subcritical glenoid bone loss underwent surgical treatment and were included in this regression study. Thirty‐two patients underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair combined with remplissage (B + R group), and 30 patients underwent additional autologous scapular glenoid bone grafting (additional bone grafting group). The general information of the patients was recorded. The patient's activity before and after surgery was recorded. The DASH score and Constant–Murley (CM) score were used to assess the patient's functional status; the Rowe score was used to evaluate the patient's shoulder stability. The shoulder function and stability before and after surgery were analyzed and compared between the two groups. Results The final DASH scores of the B + R group and the additional bone grafting group were significantly lower than those before surgery, with a statistically significant difference (9.76 ± 4.32 vs. 27.89 ± 6.63, 8.50 ± 3.32 vs. 28.0 ± 4.27, p = 0.000); the final CM scores of the two groups were significantly higher than those before surgery (88.71 ± 3.74 vs. 73.68 ± 3.74, 87.16 ± 2.29 vs. 71.37 ± 2.68, p = 0.000). There was no statistical difference in the final DASH score and final CM score between the two groups (p > 0.05). In terms of postoperative stability, the final Rowe scores of the two groups were significantly higher than those before surgery, with a statistically significant difference (89.06 ± 9.19 vs. 41.71 ± 4.13; 93.16 ± 4.99 vs. 42.33 ± 2.53, p = 0.000). Compared with the control group, the additional bone graft group achieved higher final Rowe scores (93.16 ± 4.99 vs. 89.06 ± 9.19, p = 0.032). Conclusion For patients with anterior shoulder instability due to off‐track Hill–Sachs lesions with subcritical glenoid bone loss, although Bankart and remplissage can achieve satisfactory clinical results, additional autogenous scapular spine bone grafting can provide better stability of the shoulder, especially for patients with high sports demands.

Introduction: There is increasing evidence demonstrating the safety and benefits of physical activity (PA) in uncomplicated pregnancies. Literature has shown that pregnant women around the world do not engage in adequate exercise. This study aims to assess the current practices of exercise among pregnant women in Singapore, determine the proportion of women meeting different PA targets and evaluate the factors influencing the practice of exercise. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, pregnant women in different trimesters of pregnancy from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Singapore General Hospital were surveyed. Information regarding patient demographics, attitudes and perceptions of exercise, and practice of exercise was collected. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to determine the amount of PA. Results: A total of 201 pregnant women aged 20–44 years were surveyed. Almost all (99.0%) participants thought that exercise was beneficial in pregnancy. Only 31.6% of them engaged in any moderate or vigorous leisure-time PA (LTPA) and they were active for a median of 120 min/week. Only 12.6% of the pregnant women met the national recommendations of at least 150 min of moderate exercise per week. The amount of total PA performed was lower among women in later trimesters of pregnancy and higher among working mothers. Conclusion: Although most Singaporean pregnant women perceived exercise as beneficial, the majority did not engage in PA. Most of the participants did not meet the international PA targets and recently published national guidelines. More can be done to promote the uptake of exercise in pregnancy and optimise metabolic management of pregnant women in Singapore.

BackgroundAccording to Rome IV, reflux hypersensitivity (RH) represents a novel form of functional esophageal disorder. This study was designed to compare the clinical features of three types of endoscopic-negative heartburn: RH, nonerosive reflux disease (NERD), and functional heartburn (FH).MethodsPatients with heartburn in a medical center from 01/01/2017 to 10/31/2021 were included. This article presented a blinded retrospective analysis of 24 h MII-pH and HRM tracings from patients with NERD, RH, and FH to compare their clinical characteristics.ResultsA total of 118 patients were included in the study. There were no significant differences in age, sex, BMI, smoking status, or drinking history among RH, NERD and FH. Functional dyspepsia (FD) symptoms were more prone to exist in FH than in NERD (P < 0.05), whereas hiatal hernia was more prevalent in NERD and RH than in FH (P 0.05). The distal MNBI and PSPW index of the NERD and RH groups were lower than those of the FH group (P ConclusionsClear pathological alterations, which are distinct from those of other FGIDs, are observable in RH. It might be inappropriate to categorize RHs within FGIDs.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of injectable cemented hollow pedicle screw (CICPS) in the treatment of osteoporotic lumbar degenerative diseases through a large sample long-term follow-up study. Additionally, we aim to explore the risk factors affecting interbody fusion. Methods A total of 98 patients who underwent CICPS for transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for osteoporotic lumbar degenerative disease from March 2011 to September 2017 were analyzed. X-ray and electronic computed tomography (CT) imaging data were collected during preoperative, postoperative, and follow-up periods. The data included changes in intervertebral space height (ΔH), screw failure, cement leakage (CL), and intervertebral fusion. The patients were divided into two groups based on their fusion status one year after surgery: satisfied group A and dissatisfied group B. Surgical data such as operation time, intraoperative bleeding volume and surgical complications were recorded, and visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were used to evaluate the improvement of lumbar and leg pain. Results The mean follow-up time was 101.29 months (ranging from 70 to 128 months). A total of 320 CICPS were used, with 26 screws (8.13%) leaking, 3 screws (0.94%) experiencing cement augmentation failure, and 1 screw (0.31%) becoming loose and breaking. Abstract The majority of existing face inpainting methods primarily focus on generating a single result that visually resembles the original image. The generation of diverse and plausible results has emerged as a new branch in image restoration, often referred to as “Pluralistic Image Completion”. However, most diversity methods simply use random latent vectors to generate multiple results, leading to uncontrollable outcomes. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel architecture known as the Reference-Guided Directional Diverse Face Inpainting Network. In this paper, instead of using a background image as reference, which is typically used in image restoration, we have used a face image, which can have many different characteristics from the original image, including but not limited to gender and age, to serve as a reference face style. Our network firstly infers the semantic information of the masked face, i.e., the face parsing map, based on the partial image and its mask, which subsequently guides and constrains directional diverse generator network. The network will learn the distribution of face images from different domains in a low-dimensional manifold space. To validate our method, we conducted extensive experiments on the CelebAMask-HQ dataset. Our method not only produces high-quality oriented diverse results but also complements the images with the style of the reference face image. Additionally, our diverse results maintain correct facial feature distribution and sizes, rather than being random. Our network has achieved SOTA results in face diverse inpainting when writing. ABSTRACT Cordyceps militaris infects insects and forms sclerotia within the insect remains, establishing insect–microbe complexes. Here, C. militaris sclerotia samples from a single location in China over a 5-year period were subjected to high-throughput DNA sequencing, and the core microbes (which were stably enriched in the sclerotia over the 5 years) were identified. Next, seven bacterial strains were isolated from the C. militaris sclerotia, their biochemical characteristics were assessed, and they were co-cultured with C. militaris to study their effects on C. militaris metabolite production and biomass. Furthermore, the effects of NH4, NO3, and peptone media on C. militaris were compared. The results showed that Rhodococcus, Phyllobacterium, Pseudomonas, Achromobacter, Ensifer, Stenotrophomonas, Sphingobacterium, Variovorax, and Acinetobacter were the core microbes. Although co-culture of C. militaris with the seven bacterial strains isolated from the sclerotia did not directly increase the cordycepin level, they all had NO3 reduction ability, and four had urea decomposition ability. Meanwhile, C. militaris in NH4 medium had an increased cordycepin level compared to C. militaris in the other two media. From this, we inferred that bacteria in the sclerotia can convert NO3 to NH4, and then cordycepin is produced using NH4, which was confirmed by RNA-seq and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. Thus, bacteria in the sclerotia may indirectly affect the C. militaris metabolite production by regulating nitrogen metabolism. In summary, there are stable core microbes in the C. militaris sclerotia, and they may directly and indirectly affect the growth and metabolite production of C. militaris.IMPORTANCEThe model Cordyceps species Cordyceps militaris is rich in therapeutic compounds. It has recently been demonstrated that symbiotic microbes in sclerotia affect Cordyceps’ growth, development, and secondary metabolite production. In this study, core microbes were identified based on C. militaris sclerotia samples obtained from the same site over 5 years. Additionally, bacterial strains isolated from C. militaris sclerotia were found to affect metabolite production and nitrogen utilization, based on functional tests. Moreover, based on the bacterial nitrogen metabolism capacity in the sclerotia and its influence on C. militaris metabolite production, we deduced that bacteria in the sclerotia can indirectly affect C. militaris metabolite production by regulating nitrogen metabolism. This is the first report on how bacteria in the sclerotia affect C. militaris metabolite production from the perspective of the nitrogen cycle. The results increase our understanding of microbial functions in C. militaris sclerotia.

Background Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells face many obstacles in solid tumor therapy, including heterogeneous antigen expression and inefficient T cell persistence. Guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) has been identified as a suitable tumor antigen for targeted therapy due to its intestinal-restricted expression pattern in normal tissues and steady overexpression in gastrointestinal tumors, especially colorectal cancer. An antigen-sensitive and long-lasting CAR-T cell targeting GUCY2C was investigated in this study.Methods Using constructed tumor cell lines with various GUCY2C expression densities, we screened out an antigen-sensitive single chain variable fragment (scFv) that enabled CAR-T cells to efficiently eradicate the GUCY2C lowly expressed tumor cells. CAR-T cells with different compositions of the hinge, transmembrane and costimulatory domains were also constructed for selection of the long-lasting CAR-T format with durable antitumor efficacy in vitro and in tumor-bearing mice. The underlying mechanism was further investigated based on mutation of the hinge and transmembrane domains.Results We found that the composition of the antigen-sensitive scFv, CD8α hinge, CD8α transmembrane, and CD28 costimulatory domains boosted CAR-T cells to rapidly kill tumors, maintain high expansion capacity, and long-term efficacy in various colorectal cancer models. The durable antitumor function was attributed to the optimal CAR tonic signaling that conferred CAR-T cells with autonomous activation, proliferation, survival and cytokine release in the absence of antigen stimulation. The tonic signaling was associated with the length and the cysteine residues in the CD8α hinge and transmembrane domains.Conclusions This study demonstrated a potent GUCY2C-targeted CAR-T cell for gastrointestinal tumor therapy and highlights the importance of adequate tonic signaling for effective CAR-T cell therapy against solid tumors.

Abstract Snap‐through bistability was widely exploited for rapid hopping in micro‐electro‐mechanical systems and soft robots. However, considerable energy input was required to trigger the transition between discrete buckling states blocked by potential wells. Here a dynamic buckling mechanism of a buckled blister constrained inside an outer ring is explored for eliciting rotary actuation via a localized change of curvature in the blister. Due to rotational invariance of the buckled blister, lower energy supply is required to initiate the snap‐through of buckling compared to conventional bistable mechanism. The controllability in rotational speed and output torque of the bimetallic blister‐based rotator inside a rigid stator is exhibited, and the locomotion is demonstrated with two elastic rings via localized pneumatic actuators. With broad choices of stimulus and material for rings, the findings illustrate the promising potential of two nested rings to create active motions for diverse applications including gearless motors, peristaltic pumps, and locomotive robots.

Colletotrichum tabacum, causing anthracnose in tobacco, is a notorious plant pathogen threatening tobacco production globally. The underlying mechanisms of C. tabacum effectors that interfere with plant defense are not well known. Here, we identified a novel effector, Cte1, from C. tabacum, and its expression was upregulated in the biotrophic stage. We found that Cte1 depresses plant cell death initiated by BAX and inhibits reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursts triggered by flg22 and chitin in Nicotiana benthamiana. The CTE1 knockout mutants decrease the virulence of C. tabacum to N. benthamiana, and the Cte1 transgenic N. benthamiana increase susceptibility to C. tabacum, verifying that Cte1 is involved in the pathogenicity of C. tabacum. We demonstrated that Cte1 interacted with NbCPR1, a Constitutive expresser of Plant Resistance (CPR) protein in plants. Silencing of NbCPR1 expression attenuated the infection of C. tabacum, indicating that NbCPR1 negatively regulates plant immune responses. Cte1 stabilizes NbCPR1 in N. benthamiana. Our study shows that Cte1 suppresses plant immunity to facilitate C. tabacum infection by intervening in the native function of NbCPR1. A solution to address the issues of environmental light interference in Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods is proposed in this paper. First, signals from the face’s region of interest (ROI) and background noise signals are simultaneously collected, and the two signals are processed by a differential to obtain a more accurate rPPG signal. This method effectively suppresses background noise and enhances signal quality. Secondly, the singular spectrum analysis algorithm (SSA) is enhanced to further improve the accuracy of heart rate detection. The algorithm’s parameters are adaptively optimized by integrating the spectral and periodic characteristics of the heart rate signal. Experimental results demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper effectively mitigates the effects of lighting changes on heart rate detection, thereby enhancing detection accuracy. Overall, the experiments indicate that the proposed method significantly improves the effectiveness and accuracy of heart rate detection, achieving a high level of consistency with existing contact-based detection methods.

Planets may be rotationally flattened, and their oblateness thus provides useful information on their formation and evolution. Here, we develop a new algorithm that can compute the transit light curve due to an oblate planet very efficiently and use it to study the detectability of planet oblateness (and spin obliquity) with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Using the Jupiter analog, Kepler-167e, as an example, we show that observations of a single transit with JWST are able to detect a Saturn-like oblateness ( f = 0.1) with high confidence, or set a stringent upper limit on the oblateness parameter, as long as the planetary spin is slightly misaligned (≳20°) with respect to its orbital direction. Based on known obliquity measurements and theoretical arguments, it is reasonable to believe that this level of misalignment may be common. We estimate the sensitivity limit of JWST in oblateness detections and highlight the importance of better characterizations of cold planets in planning future JWST transit observations. The potential to detect rings, moons, and atmospheric species of the cold giants with JWST is also discussed.

Building on our previous research involving multiwavelength data from UV to IR, we employ spectroscopic observations of ionized gas, as well as neutral hydrogen gas obtained from the Five-hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), to explore the intrinsic processes of star formation and chemical enrichment within NGC 628. Our analysis focuses on several key properties, including gas-phase extinction, star formation rate (SFR) surface density, oxygen abundance, and H i mass surface density. The azimuthal distributions of these parameters in relation to the morphological and kinematic features revealed by FAST H i reveal that NGC 628 is an isolated galaxy that has not undergone recent interactions. We observe a mild radial extinction gradient accompanied by a notable dispersion. The SFR surface density also shows a gentle radial gradient, characteristic of typical spiral galaxies. Additionally, we find a negative radial metallicity gradient of −0.44 dex ${R}_{25}^{-1}$ , supporting the “inside-out” scenario of galaxy formation. We investigate the resolved mass–metallicity relation (MZR) and the resolved star formation main sequence (SFMS) alongside their dependences on the physical properties of both ionized and neutral hydrogen gas. Our findings indicate no secondary dependence of the resolved MZR on SFR surface density or H i mass surface density. Furthermore, we observe that gas-phase extinction and the equivalent width of H α both increase with SFR surface density in the resolved SFMS.

Flax, an important oil and fiber crop, is widely cultivated in temperate and sub-frigid regions worldwide. China is one of the major producers of flax, with Gansu Province predominantly practicing cultivation in hilly areas. However, common issues such as feeding difficulties, stem entanglement, and low threshing efficiency significantly restrict the improvement of planting efficiency. This study addresses the key technical challenges in flax combine harvesting in hilly regions by developing a discrete element model of the flax plant and utilizing DEM-FEA co-simulation technology. The performance of two threshing drum models (T1 and T2) was analyzed, focusing on motion trajectory, stress distribution, and threshing effects. The simulation results show that the T2 model, with its combination of rib and rod tooth design, significantly improves threshing and separation efficiency. The loss rate was reduced from 5.6% in the T1 model to 1.78% in the T2 model, while the maximum stress and deformation were significantly lower, indicating higher structural stability and durability. Field validation results revealed that the T1 model had a total loss rate of 3.32%, an impurity rate of 3.57%, and an efficiency of 0.09 hm2/h. In contrast, the T2 model achieved a total loss rate of 2.29%, an impurity rate of 3.39%, and an efficiency of 0.22 hm2/h, representing a 144.4% improvement in working efficiency. These findings indicate that the T2 model has a higher potential for flax harvesting in hilly and mountainous regions, especially in improving threshing efficiency and operational stability, providing an important theoretical basis for optimizing threshing equipment design.
