The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have gradually become more than an acronym as their governments have been engaging in international and political negotiations as if they were a regional economic group. The main goal of this paper is to compare the structural change of the BRICS using econometric evidence based on estimates of Thirlwall’s law for the period 1995-2013. Thirlwall’s equations have become powerful indicators to evaluate whether a country is in a catching-up or falling-behind long-term path. Our basic assumption is that the way in which each country engages in international trade and global capital flows affects, positively or negatively, structural change and the catch-up trajectory. Though our results cannot confirm Russia’s long-term growth trajectory, they do confirm that over the period analysed China and India have shown a rapid catching up path, while Brazil and South Africa have entered into a falling behind path. This paper, based on Kaldor’s main contributions, discusses the specificities in the catch up process of developing economies with high degree of structural heterogeneity. The theoretical model developed shows that developing economies, when modernizing the domestic versus external stock of capital, can reduce the technological gap and thus obtain a faster growth rate without producing disequilibrium in the balance of payments in the long run. As income distribution explains the incentive to the introduction of innovations through capital accumulation, the model is well succeed in connecting capital accumulation, income distribution, technological gap and long term external constraint. We conclude that capital accumulation, under certain circumstances, can overcome external constraint if the accumulation effort promotes structural change increasing the importance of sectors more technological-intensive. In this paper we discuss the behaviour of the firm in an inflationary environment. We follow the post Keynesian tradition of emphasizing the decision making process under uncertainty. Inflation increases uncertainty, affecting expectations that guide decisions. In particular we examine price decisions in different inflationary settings. Finance and indexation are also discussed in this paper., Este trabalho discute o comportamento da firma em um ambiente inflacionário. A abordagem segue a tradição pós-keynesiana, enfatizando o aspecto da incerteza que cerca o processo de tomada de decisões. A inflação aumenta a incerteza, afetando a formação de expectativas que orientam decisões. Em particular, são analisadas as decisões de preços, considerando-se vários cenários de inflação. A questão do financiamento também é comentada, bem como a indexação.

O objetivo deste texto é apresentar uma classificação para a economia brasileira de setores de atividade segundo graus de precariedade na forma de organização da produção. O texto propõe critérios e uma classificação de atividades econômicas segundo três níveis de informalidade: alta, média e baixa. Nossa hipótese de trabalho é assumir que, assim como a fronteira entre o trabalho formal e o informal não é bem demarcada, dentro do setor informal também podemos identificar um continuum de situações em que os pressupostos de um trabalho decente estão mais ou menos presentes. Conclui-se que políticas públicas que visem a combater a informalidade devem buscar o crescimento econômico e atuar sobre as diferentes características das atividades informais. The aim of this paper is to present a classification of sectors for the Brazilian economy according to different degrees of informality in the organization of the production. The paper classifies informal activities in three levels: high, medium and low informality. Considering that there is no clear line dividing formal and informal work, we assume that there is a continuum of situations where the characteristics of decent work are more or less observed. The paper concludes that to combat informality economic policy should pursuit economic growth and act taking in consideration the differences in the organization of the informal sector.

São Bernardo do Campo, 2021 O trabalho busca mostrar a trajetória da Petrobras durante os anos 2000 com o objetivo de responder à questão: a empresa passa por um processo de financeirização sob o enfoque do princípio de governança corporativa de maximização de riqueza acionária? Tem-se como características desse princípio a redução em investimentos em capital humano e em investimentos produtivos e a distribuição de renda favoráveis a acionistas. Com a hipótese de que a empresa passa por esse processo será efetuada uma pesquisa documental dos Relatórios Anuais da empresa a fim de captar nos discursos dos Presidentes e nos Planos Estratégicos indícios de financeirização. Para complementar a análise será estimado por meio da técnica GMM um modelo econométrico de investimento produtivo que inclui variáveis reais (lucro operacional e receita bruta) e financeiras (pagamentos, receitas e aplicações financeiras). The research seeks to show Petrobras' trajectory during the 2000s in order to answer the question: does the company go through a financialization process under the focus of the corporate governance principle of maximizing shareholder wealth? The characteristics of this principle are the reduction in investments in human capital and in productive investments and the distribution of income favorable to shareholders. With the hypothesis that the company goes through this process, a documentary search of the company's Annual Reports will be carried out in order to capture in the speeches of the Presidents and in the Strategic Plans indications of financialization. To complement the analysis, an econometric model of productive investment that includes real variables (operating profit and gross revenue) and financial variables (payments, revenues and financial investments) will be estimated using the GMM technique.

For this purpose, we sought to evaluate the domestic and international literature on deindustrialization. The goal is to observe through the data and indicators most recommended by leading authors, if Brazil has indeed signs that is undergoing a process of deindustrialization. The economic aggregates that are analyzed, including the following variables: employment, output and the external sector. The respective series show, on the whole, that Brazil is indeed experiencing, since the mid 1980s, the phenomenon of deindustrialization. The main causes contributing to explain why this process is in process: the advancement of "commodities" in Brazilian exports, the recent appreciation of the domestic currency, the low technological density of Brazilian industrial products, changes in economic policies of the 1980s and 1990s, and finally the general and recent evolution of capitalism. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para o entendimento sobre a desindustrialização brasileira, bem como propor uma reflexão sobre o futuro das políticas de governo atualmente vigentes. Para isso, procurou-se inicialmente avaliar a literatura nacional e estrangeira sobre o tema da desindustrialização. O objetivo é, portanto, observar através dos dados e indicadores mais recomendados pela literatura existente, se o Brasil apresenta, realmente, sinais de que está passando por um processo de desindustrialização. Os agregados econômicos analisados foram: emprego, produto e o setor externo. As respectivas séries revelaram, em seu conjunto, que o Brasil está enfrentando, desde meados dos anos 1980, o fenômeno da desindustrialização. As principais causas que contribuem para explicar o porquê desse processo são: o avanço das commodities na pauta exportadora brasileira, a recente valorização da moeda nacional, a baixa densidade tecnológica dos produtos industriais brasileiros, as mudanças de políticas econômicas dos anos 1980 e 1990 e, finalmente, o processo geral recente do capitalismo, no contexto de um mundo globalizado.
