Abstract

We present limits on the spin-independent interaction cross section of dark matter particles with silicon nuclei, derived from data taken with a cryogenic calorimeter with 0.35 g target mass operated in the CRESST-III experiment. A baseline nuclear recoil energy resolution of (1.36 ± 0.05) eVnr, currently the lowest reported for macroscopic particle detectors, and a corresponding energy thresh-old of (10.0 ± 0.2) eVnr have been achieved, improving the sensitivity to light dark matter particles with masses below 160 MeV/c2 by a factor of up to 20 compared to previous results. We characterize the observed low energy excess, and we exclude noise triggers and radioactive contaminations on the crystal surfaces as dominant contributions.

Abstract

CRESST is a leading direct detection sub-GeVc−2 dark matter experiment. During its second phase, cryogenic bolometers were used to detect nuclear recoils off the CaWO4 target crystal nuclei. The previously established electromagnetic background model relies on Secular Equilibrium (SE) assumptions. In this work, a validation of SE is attempted by comparing two likelihood-based normalisation results using a recently developed spectral template normalisation method based on Bayesian likelihood. Albeit we find deviations from SE in some cases we conclude that these deviations are artefacts of the fit and that the assumptions of SE is physically meaningful.

Abstract

The CRESST-II experiment is searching for dark matter particles via their elastic scattering off nuclei in a target material. The CRESST target consists of scintillating CaW04 crystals which are operated as cryogenic calorimeters at millikelvin temperatures and read out by transition edge sensors. Each interaction in the CaW04 target crystal produces a phonon signal and also a light signal that is measured by a secondary cryogenic calorimeter. The low energy thresholds of these detectors, combined with the presence of light nuclei in the target material, allow to probe the low-mass region of the parameter space for spin-independent dark matter-nucleon scattering with high sensitivity. In this contribution results from a blind analysis of one detector module operated in the latest measurement campaign are presented. An unprecedented sensitivity for the light dark matter has been obtained with 52kg live days and a threshold of 307eV for nuclear recoils, extending the reach of direct dark matter searches to the sub-GeV/c2 region.

Abstract

The experiment CRESST`-II aims at the detection of dark matter with scintillating CaWO 4 crystals operated as cryogenic detectors. Recent results on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering from the CRESST`-II Phase 2 allowed to probe a new region of parameter space for WIMP masses below 3 GeV/c(2). This sensitivity was achieved after background levels were reduced significantly. We present extensive background studies of a CaWO4 crystal, called TUM40, grown at the Technische Universitat Munchen. The average beta/gamma rate of 3.51/[kg keV day] (1-40 keV) and the total intrinsic alpha activity from natural decay chains of 3.08 +/- 0.04 mBq/kg are the lowest reported for CaWO4 detectors. Contributions from cosmogenic activation, surface-alpha decays, external radiation and intrinsic alpha/beta emitters are investigated in detail. A Monte-Carlo based background decomposition allows to identify the origin of the majority of beta/gamma events in the energy region relevant for dark matter search.

Abstract

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP - nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10 - 10 picobarn. Abstract

The direct dark matter search experiment CRESST uses scintillating CaWO4 single crystals as targets for possible WIMP scatterings. An intrinsic radioactive contamination of the crystals as low as possible is crucial for the sensitivity of the detectors. In the past CaWO4 crystals operated in CRESST were produced by institutes in Russia and the Ukraine. Since 2011 CaWO4 crystals have also been grown at the crystal laboratory of the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM) to better meet the requirements of CRESST and of the future tonne-scale multi-material experiment EURECA. The radiopurity of the raw materials and of first TUM-grown crystals was measured by ultra-low background gamma-spectrometry. Two TUM-grown crystals were also operated as low-temperature detectors at a test setup in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. These measurements were used to determine the crystals' intrinsic alpha-activities which were compared to those of crystals produced at other institutes. The total alpha-activities of TUM-grown crystals as low as 1 : 23 +/- 0 : 06 mBq/kg were found to be significantly smaller than the activities of crystals grown at other institutes typically ranging between similar to 15 mBq/kg and similar to 35 mBq/kg.

Abstract

AbstractCryogenic detectors with excellent energy resolution and low energy threshold far beyond the level of semiconducting detectors open a variety of new. applications in physics including search for Dark Matter in the universe [2], neutrino physics [3], and IR-, UV- and X-ray astrophysics [4, 9]. Interdisciplinary fields where cryogenic detectors have already shown promising results are the detection of biomolecules [5] and X-ray spectroscopy at synchrotron beam lines [6] and in scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) [7]. For both, astrophysical and analytical use, the development of high resolution microcalorimeters based on iridium/gold phase transition thermometers and aluminum tunnel junctions for use in a compact and universal detector system was initiated.Our cryogenic microcalorimeters consist of an absorber, a temperature sensor and a weak coupling to a heat sink. An X-ray photon interacts with the absorber and raises its temperature. The sensor measures the temperature increase and the system then, mediated by the coupling, relaxes back to its operating temperature.

Abstract

CRESST is a leading direct detection sub-GeVc -2 dark matter experiment. During its second phase, cryogenic bolometers were used to detect nuclear recoils off the CaWO 4 target crystal nuclei. The previously established electromagnetic background model relies on Secular Equilibrium (SE) assumptions. In this work, a validation of SE is attempted by comparing two likelihood-based normalisation results using a recently developed spectral template normalisation method based on Bayesian likelihood. Abstract

The CRESST experiment employs cryogenic calorimeters for the sensitive measurement of nuclear recoils induced by dark matter particles. The recorded signals need to undergo a careful cleaning process to avoid wrongly reconstructed recoil energies caused by pile-up and read-out artefacts. We frame this process as a time series classification task and propose to automate it with neural networks. With a data set of over one million labeled records from 68 detectors, recorded between 2013 and 2019 by CRESST, we test the capability of four commonly used neural network architectures to learn the data cleaning task. Our best performing model achieves a balanced accuracy of 0.932 on our test set. We show on an exemplary detector that about half of the wrongly predicted events are in fact wrongly labeled events, and a large share of the remaining ones have a context-dependent ground truth. We furthermore evaluate the recall and selectivity of our classifiers with simulated data. Abstract

The CRESST (Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers) dark matter search experiment aims for the detection of dark matter particles via elastic scattering off nuclei in CaWO 4 crystals. To understand the CRESST electromagnetic background due to the bulk contamination in the employed materials, a model based on Monte Carlo simulations was developed using the Geant4 simulation toolkit. The results of the simulation are applied to the TUM40 detector module of CRESST-II phase 2. Abstract

The usual assumption in direct dark matter searches is to consider only the spin-dependent or spin-independent scattering of dark matter particles. However, especially in models with light dark matter particles O(GeV/c^{2}), operators which carry additional powers of the momentum transfer q^{2} can become dominant. One such model based on asymmetric dark matter has been invoked to overcome discrepancies in helioseismology and an indication was found for a particle with a preferred mass of 3  GeV/c^{2} and a cross section of 10^{-37}  cm^{2}. Recent data from the CRESST-II experiment, which uses cryogenic detectors based on CaWO_{4} to search for nuclear recoils induced by dark matter particles, are used to constrain these momentum-dependent models. The low energy threshold of 307 eV for nuclear recoils of the detector used, allows us to rule out the proposed best fit value above.

17. Low-level γ-ray spectrometry at the underground laboratory Garching.

Abstract

Two low-background setups for material screening based on HPGe detectors were built in the Garching Underground Laboratory with an overburden of ~10 m.w.e. They include several layers of passive shielding as well as an active muon veto. The first setup (GEM) comprises a 150% efficiency HPGe detector which can optionally be surrounded by a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector that serves as anti-Compton veto. The second setup (LoAx) consists of two smaller HPGe detectors which are arranged face-to-face to cover a larger solid angle around the sample and to allow coincidence measurements. For a 5.6 kg piece of copper after 11 days of measurement we have reached a sensitivity for (226)Ra and (228)Ra/(228)Th of ~5 mBq kg(-1) with the GEM setup. In the LoAx setup we have achieved limits of less than 100 mBq kg(-1) for (234)Th and (210)Pb with a 156 g sample of PPO wavelength shifter after 18 days of measurement., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. 18. Anticompton spectrometer element studies

Abstract

Sensitive measurements of the trace elements require the use of an active suppression of the overall detection background. For this reason, an anticompton system made of NaI and HPGe has been constructed at the new underground laboratory in Garching near Munich for analysis of irradiated samples. Significantly improved limits for trace elements' concentration in nylon have been obtained. A suppression factor of 16 in the energy region of 100-400 keV was reached.
