We introduce, for the first time, bicoherent-state path integration as a method for quantizing non-hermitian systems. Bicoherent-state path integrals arise as a natural generalization of ordinary coherent-state path integrals, familiar from hermitian quantum physics. We do all this by working out a concrete example, namely, computation of the propagator of a certain quasi-hermitian variant of Swanson's model, which is not invariant under conventional $PT$-transformation. The resulting propagator coincides with that of the propagator of the standard harmonic oscillator, which is isospectral with the model under consideration by virtue of a similarity transformation relating the corresponding hamiltonians. We also compute the propagator of this model in position space by means of Feynman path integration and verify the consistency of the two results., Comment: latex, 31 pages

The collective field formulation of the Calogero model supports periodic density waves. An important set of such density waves is a two-parameter family of BPS solutions of the equations of motion of the collective field theory. One of these parameters is essentially the average particle density, which determines the period, while the other parameter determines the amplitude. These BPS solutions are sometimes referred to as "small amplitude waves" since they undulate around their mean density, but never vanish. We present complete analysis of quadratic fluctuations around these BPS solutions. The corresponding fluctuation hamiltonian (i.e., the stability operator) is diagonalized in terms of bosonic creation and annihilation operators which correspond to the complete orthogonal set of Bloch-Floquet eigenstates of a related periodic Schr\"odinger hamiltonian, which we derive explicitly. Remarkably, the fluctuation spectrum is independent of the parameter which determines the density wave's amplitude. As a consequence, the sum over zero-point energies of the field-theoretic fluctuation hamiltonian, and its ensuing normal-ordering and regularization, are the same as in the case of fluctuations around constant density background, namely, the ground state. Thus, quadratic fluctuations do not shift the energy density tied with the BPS-density waves studied here, compared to its ground state value. The Calogero model bears, in the continuum limit, collective excitations in the form of density waves and solitary modulations of the density of particles. This sector of the spectrum of the model was investigated, mostly within the framework of collective field theory, by several authors, over the past fifteen years or so. In this work we shall concentrate on periodic solutions of the collective BPS-equation (also known as "finite amplitude density waves"), as well as on periodic solutions of the full static variational equations which vanish periodically (also known as "large amplitude density waves"). While these solutions are not new, we feel that our analysis and presentation add to the existing literature, as we explain in the text. In addition, we show that these solutions also occur in a certain two-family generalization of the Calogero model, at special points in parameter space. A compendium of useful identities associated with Hilbert transforms, including our own proofs of these identities, appears in Appendix A. In Appendix B we also elucidate in the present paper some fine points having to do with manipulating Hilbert transforms, which appear ubiquitously in the collective field formalism. We study the Casimir effect at finite temperature for a massless scalar field in the parallel plates geometry in N spatial dimensions, under various combinations of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on the plates. We show that in all these cases the entropy, in the limit where energy equipartitioning applies, is a geometrical factor whose sign determines the sign of the Casimir force., Comment: 14 pages

We study the collective field formulation of a restricted form of the multispecies Calogero model, in which the three-body interactions are set to zero. We show that the resulting collective field theory is invariant under certain duality transformations, which interchange, among other things, particles and antiparticles, and thus generalize the well-known strong-weak coupling duality symmetry of the ordinary Calogero model. We identify all these dualities, which form an Abelian group, and study their consequences. The Casimir energy, free energy and Casimir force are evaluated, at arbitrary finite temperature, for a dilute dielectric ball with uniform velocity of light inside the ball and in the surrounding medium. We analyze the high temperature (or classical) limit of the Casimir effect. A useful quantity which arises naturally in our discussion is the ``relative Casimir energy", which we define for a configuration of disjoint conducting boundaries of arbitrary shapes, as the difference of Casimir energies between the given configuration and a configuration with the same boundaries infinitely far apart. Using path integration techniques, we show that the relative Casimir energy vanishes exponentially fast in temperature. This is consistent with a simple physical argument based on Kirchhoff's law. As a result the ``relative Casimir entropy", which we define in an obviously analogous manner, tends, in the classical limit, to a finite asymptotic value which depends only on the geometry of the boundaries. Thus the Casimir force between disjoint pieces of the boundary, in the classical limit, is entropy driven and is governed by a dimensionless number characterizing the geometry of the cavity. Contributions to the Casimir thermodynamical quantities due to each individual connected component of the boundary exhibit logarithmic deviations in temperature from the behavior just described. These logarithmic deviations seem to arise due to our difficulty to separate the Casimir energy (and the other thermodynamical quantities) from the ``electromagnetic'' self-energy of each of the connected components of the boundary in a well defined manner. Our approach to the Casimir effect is not to impose sharp boundary conditions on the fluctuating field, but rather take into consideration its interaction with the plasma of ``charge carriers'' in the boundary, with the plasma frequency playing the role of a physical UV cutoff. Recent analytical and numerical work have shown that the spectrum of the random non-hermitean Hamiltonian on a ring which models the physics of vortex line pinning in superconductors is one dimensional. In the maximally non-hermitean limit, we give a simple "one-line" proof of this feature. We then study the spectral curves for various distributions of the random site energies. We find that a critical transition occurs when the average of the logarithm of the random site energy squared vanishes. For a large class of probability distributions of the site energies, we find that as the randomness increases the energy at which the localization-delocalization transition occurs increases, reaches a maximum, and then decreases. The Cauchy distribution studied previously in the literature does not have this generic behavior. We determine the critical value of the randomness at which "wings" first appear in the energy spectrum. For distributions, such as Cauchy, with infinitely long tails, we show that this critical value is infinitesimally above zero. We determine the density of eigenvalues on the wings for any probability distribution. We show that the localization length on the wings diverges linearly as the energy approaches the energy at which the localization-delocalization transition occurs. We apply the recently introduced method of hermitization to study in the large $N$ limit non-hermitean random matrices that are drawn from a large class of circularly symmetric non-Gaussian probability distributions, thus extending the recent Gaussian non-hermitean literature. We develop the general formalism for calculating the Green's function and averaged density of eigenvalues, which may be thought of as the non-hermitean analog of the method due to Br\`ezin, Itzykson, Parisi and Zuber for analyzing hermitean non-Gaussian random matrices. We obtain an explicit algebraic equation for the integrated density of eigenvalues. A somewhat surprising result of that equation is that the shape of the eigenvalue distribution in the complex plane is either a disk or an annulus. As a concrete example, we analyze the quartic ensemble and study the phase transition from a disk shaped eigenvalue distribution to an annular distribution. Finally, we apply the method of hermitization to develop the addition formalism for free non-hermitean random variables. We consider random non-hermitean matrices in the large $N$ limit. The power of analytic function theory cannot be brought to bear directly to analyze non-hermitean random matrices, in contrast to hermitean random matrices. To overcome this difficulty, we show that associated to each ensemble of non-hermitean matrices there is an auxiliary ensemble of random hermitean matrices which can be analyzed by the usual methods. We then extract the Green's function and the density of eigenvalues of the non-hermitean ensemble from those of the auxiliary ensemble. We analyze the 1+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model non-perturbatively. We study non-trivial saddle points of the effective action in which the composite fields $\sigx=<\bar\psi\psi>$ and $\pix=<\bar\psii\gam_5\psi>$ form static space dependent configurations. These configurations may be viewed as one dimensional chiral bags that trap the original fermions (``quarks'') into stable extended entities (``hadrons''). We provide explicit expressions for the profiles of some of these objects and calculate their masses. Our analysis of these saddle points, and in particular, the proof that the $\sigx, \pix$ condensations must give rise to a reflectionless Dirac operator, appear to us simpler and more direct than the calculations previously done by Shei, using the inverse scattering method following Dashen, Hasslacher, and Neveu., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, LaTex. As has long been known, it is energetically favorable for massive fermions to deform the homogeneous vacuum around them, giving rise to extended bag-like objects. We study this phenomenon non-perturbatively in a model field theory, the $1+1$ dimensional Massive Gross-Neveu model, in the large $N$ limit. We prove that the bags in this model are necessarily time dependent. We calculate their masses variationally and demonstrate their stability. We find a non-analytic behavior in these masses as we approach the standard massless Gross-Neveu model and argue that this behavior is caused by the kink-antikink threshold. We analyze the $1+1$ dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model non-perturbatively. In addition to its simple ground state saddle points, the effective action of this model has a rich collection of non-trivial saddle points in which the composite fields $\sigx=\lag\bar\psi\psi\rag$ and $\pix=\lag\bar\psi i\gam_5\psi\rag$ form static space dependent configurations because of non-trivial dynamics. These configurations may be viewed as one dimensional chiral bags that trap the original fermions (``quarks") into stable extended entities (``hadrons"). We provide explicit expressions for the profiles of these objects and calculate their masses. Our analysis of these saddle points is based on an explicit representation we find for the diagonal resolvent of the Dirac operator in a $\{\sigx, \pix\}$ background which produces a prescribed number of bound states. We analyse in detail the cases of a single as well as two bound states. We find that bags that trap $N$ fermions are the most stable ones, because they release all the fermion rest mass as binding energy and become massless. Our explicit construction of the diagonal resolvent is based on elementary Sturm-Liouville theory and simple dimensional analysis and does not depend on the large $N$ approximation. These facts make it, in our view, simpler and more direct than the calculations previously done by Shei, using the inverse scattering method following Dashen, Hasslacher, and Neveu. Our method of finding such non-trivial static configurations may be applied to other $1+1$ dimensional field theories.

High-Q microspheres with whispering-gallery modes have very narrow resonances that can be used for fiber-optic filters, ultra-compact narrow-linewidth lasers and optical/microwave oscillators. Whispering-gallery modes were previously excited in microspheres using evanescent optical fields. The necessary phase synchronism was obtained by adjusting the incident angle of input light beam (prism coupler) or adjustment of the waveguide propagation constant (fiber taper coupler). For many applications, however, bulky near-field couplers are undesirable. They compromise the symmetry and generate stray fields. Also, the control of coupling is crucial for the performance of microsphere resonators: in analogy with radio frequency circuits, the loading Q-factor should be less than the intrinsic Q-factor, Q(sub L) less than or equal to Q(sub O). Ideally one should combine a stable coupling element and a resonator into a single microsphere component.
