1. Active Learning Methodologies for Teaching Programming in Undergraduate Courses: A Systematic Mapping Study

Abstract

Teaching programming is a complex process requiring learning to develop different skills. To minimize the challenges faced in the classroom, instructors have been adopting active methodologies in teaching computer programming. This article presents a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) to identify and categorize the types of methodologies that instructors have adopted for teaching programming. We evaluated 3,850 papers published from 2000 to 2022. The results provide an overview and comprehensive view of active learning methodologies employed in teaching programming, technologies, programming languages, and the metrics used to observe student learning in this context. In the results, we identified thirty-seven different ALMs adopted by instructors. We realized that seventeen publications describe teaching approaches that combine more than one ALM, and the most reported methodologies in the studies are Flipped Classroom and Gamification-Based Learning. In addition, we are proposing an educational and collaborative tool called CollabProg, which summarizes the primary active learning methodologies identified in this SMS. CollabProg will assist instructors in selecting appropriate ALMs that align with their pedagogical requirements and teaching programming context.

Despite significant advancements in computer vision, understanding complex scenes, particularly those involving humor, remains a substantial challenge. This paper introduces HumorDB, a novel image-only dataset specifically designed to advance visual humor understanding. HumorDB consists of meticulously curated image pairs with contrasting humor ratings, emphasizing subtle visual cues that trigger humor and mitigating potential biases. The dataset enables evaluation through binary classification(Funny or Not Funny), range regression(funniness on a scale from 1 to 10), and pairwise comparison tasks(Which Image is Funnier?), effectively capturing the subjective nature of humor perception. Initial experiments reveal that while vision-only models struggle, vision-language models, particularly those leveraging large language models, show promising results. HumorDB also shows potential as a valuable zero-shot benchmark for powerful large multimodal models. A Software-Defined Radio (SDR) platform is a communication system that implements as software functions that are typically implemented in dedicated hardware. One of its main advantages is the flexibility to test and deploy radio communication networks in a fast and cheap way. In the context of the Fifth Generation (5G) of wireless cellular networks, there are open source SDR platforms available online. Two of the most popular SDR platforms are srsRAN and OpenAirInterface. This paper presents these two platforms, the characteristics of the networks created by them, the possibilities of changes in their interfaces and configurations, and also their limits. Abstract

This work deals with the presence of topological structures in models of two real scalar fields in the two-dimensional spacetime. The subject concerns the presence of a geometric constriction, which appears with a modification of the kinetic term of one of the two fields. We elaborate on the construction of a first-order framework, which directly contributes to find analytical solutions. We describe several distinct possibilities, in particular, the case where the first-order equations do not separate. This is much harder, but we use the integrating factor to deal with analytical configurations. The proposed methodology help us deal with localized structures of both the N\'eel and Bloch type very naturally, and we end the work suggesting some possibilities of applications in distinct areas of nonlinear science., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

Using the inverse period map of the Gauss-Manin connection associated with $QH^{*}(\mathbb{CP}^2)$ and the Dubrovin construction of Landau-Ginzburg superpotential for Dubrovin Frobenius manifolds, we construct a one-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg superpotential for the quantum cohomology of $\mathbb{CP}^2$. In the case of small quantum cohomology, the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential is expressed in terms of the cubic root of the j-invariant function. For big quantum cohomology, the one-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg superpotential is given by Taylor series expansions whose coefficients are expressed in terms of quasi-modular forms. Furthermore, we express the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential for both small and big quantum cohomology of $QH^{*}(\mathbb{CP}^2)$ in closed form as the composition of the Weierstrass $\wp$-function and the universal coverings of $\mathbb{C} \setminus (\mathbb{Z} \oplus e^{\frac{\pi i}{3}}\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathbb{C} \setminus (\mathbb{Z} \oplus z\mathbb{Z})$ respectively.

Abstract

Microbial competition within plant tissues affects invading pathogens' fitness. Metabolomics is a great tool for studying their biochemical interactions by identifying accumulated metabolites. Xylella fastidiosa, a Gram-negative bacterium causing Pierce's disease (PD) in grapevines, secretes various virulence factors including cell wall-degrading enzymes, adhesion proteins, and quorum-sensing molecules. These factors, along with outer membrane vesicles, contribute to its pathogenicity. Previous studies demonstrated that co-inoculating X. fastidiosa with the Paraburkholderia phytofirmans strain PsJN suppressed PD symptoms. Here, we further investigated the interaction between the phytopathogen and the endophyte by analyzing the exometabolome of wild-type X. fastidiosa and a diffusible signaling factor (DSF) mutant lacking quorum sensing, cultivated with 20% P. phytofirmans spent media. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and the Method for Metabolite Annotation and Gene Integration (MAGI) were used to detect and map metabolites to genomes, revealing a total of 121 metabolites, of which 25 were further investigated. These metabolites potentially relate to host adaptation, virulence, and pathogenicity. Notably, this study presents the first comprehensive profile of X. fastidiosa in the presence of a P. phytofirmans spent media. The results highlight that P. phytofirmans and the absence of functional quorum sensing affect the ratios of glutamine to glutamate (Gln:Glu) in X. fastidiosa. Additionally, two compounds with plant metabolism and growth properties, 2-aminoisobutyric acid and gibberellic acid, were downregulated when X. fastidiosa interacted with P. phytofirmans. These findings suggest that P. phytofirmans-mediated disease suppression involves modulation of the exometabolome of X. fastidiosa, impacting plant immunity.

Abstract

Technical Debt (TD) refers to non-optimal decisions made in software projects that may lead to short-term benefits, but potentially harm the system's maintenance in the long-term. Technical debt management (TDM) refers to a set of activities that are performed to handle TD, e.g., identification. These activities can entail tasks such as code and architectural analysis, which can be time-consuming if done manually. Thus, substantial research work has focused on automating TDM tasks (e.g., automatic identification of code smells). However, there is a lack of studies that summarize current approaches in TDM automation. This can hinder practitioners in selecting optimal automation strategies to efficiently manage TD. It can also prevent researchers from understanding the research landscape and addressing the research problems that matter the most. Thus, the main objective of this study is to provide an overview of the state of the art in TDM automation, analyzing the available tools, their use, and the challenges in automating TDM. For this, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS), and from an initial set of 1086 primary studies, 178 were selected to answer three research questions covering different facets of TDM automation. We found 121 automation artifacts, which were classified in 4 different types (i.e., tools, plugins, scripts, and bots); the inputs/outputs and interfaces were also collected and reported. Finally, a conceptual model is proposed that synthesizes the results and allows to discuss the current state of TDM automation and related challenges. The results show that the research community has investigated to a large extent how to perform various TDM activities automatically, considering the number of studies and automation artifacts we identified. More research is needed towards fully automated TDM, specially concerning the integration of the automation artifacts.

23. Combining recurrent and residual learning for deforestation monitoring using multitemporal SAR images

Abstract

With its vast expanse, exceeding that of Western Europe by twice, the Amazon rainforest stands as the largest forest of the Earth, holding immense importance in global climate regulation. Yet, deforestation detection from remote sensing data in this region poses a critical challenge, often hindered by the persistent cloud cover that obscures optical satellite data for much of the year. Addressing this need, this paper proposes three deep-learning models tailored for deforestation monitoring, utilizing SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) multitemporal data moved by its independence on atmospheric conditions. Specifically, the study proposes three novel recurrent fully convolutional network architectures-namely, RRCNN-1, RRCNN-2, and RRCNN-3, crafted to enhance the accuracy of deforestation detection. Additionally, this research explores replacing a bitemporal with multitemporal SAR sequences, motivated by the hypothesis that deforestation signs quickly fade in SAR images over time. A comprehensive assessment of the proposed approaches was conducted using a Sentinel-1 multitemporal sequence from a sample site in the Brazilian rainforest. The experimental analysis confirmed that analyzing a sequence of SAR images over an observation period can reveal deforestation spots undetectable in a pair of images. Notably, experimental results underscored the superiority of the multitemporal approach, yielding approximately a five percent enhancement in F1-Score across all tested network architectures. Abstract

The batch size is an essential parameter to tune during the development of new neural networks. Amongst other quality indicators, it has a large degree of influence on the model's accuracy, generalisability, training times and parallelisability. This fact is generally known and commonly studied. However, during the application phase of a deep learning model, when the model is utilised by an end-user for inference, we find that there is a disregard for the potential benefits of introducing a batch size. In this study, we examine the effect of input batching on the energy consumption and response times of five fully-trained neural networks for computer vision that were considered state-of-the-art at the time of their publication. The results suggest that batching has a significant effect on both of these metrics. Furthermore, we present a timeline of the energy efficiency and accuracy of neural networks over the past decade. We find that in general, energy consumption rises at a much steeper pace than accuracy and question the necessity of this evolution. Additionally, we highlight one particular network, ShuffleNetV2(2018), that achieved a competitive performance for its time while maintaining a much lower energy consumption. Abstract

Xylella fastidiosa is the causal agent of several plant diseases affecting fruit and nut crops. Methylobacterium mesophilicum strain SR1.6/6 was isolated from Citrus sinensis and shown to promote plant growth by producing phytohormones, providing nutrients, inhibiting X. fastidiosa, and preventing Citrus Variegated Chlorosis. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the interaction among these microbes are still unclear. The present work aimed to analyze physiological and molecular aspects of M. mesophilicum SR1.6/6 and X. fastidiosa 9a5c in co-culture. The transcriptome and secretome analyses indicated that X. fastidiosa down-regulates cell division and transport genes and up-regulates stress via induction of chaperones and pathogenicity-related genes including, the lipase-esterase LesA, a protease, as well as an oligopeptidase in response to M. mesophilicum competition. On the other hand, M. mesophilicum also down-regulated transport genes, except for iron uptake, which was up-regulated. Secretome analysis identified four proteins in M. mesophilicum exclusively produced in co-culture with X. fastidiosa, among these, three are related to phosphorous uptake. These results suggest that M. mesophilicum inhibits X. fastidiosa growth mainly due to nutrient competition for iron and phosphorous, thus promoting X. fastidiosa starvation, besides producing enzymes that degrade X. fastidiosa cell wall, mainly hydrolases. The understanding of these interactions provides a direction for control and management of the phytopathogen X. fastidiosa, and consequently, helps to improve citrus growth and productivity.

Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common and partially heritable and has no effective treatments. We carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of imaging (n = 66,814) and diagnostic code (3,584 cases versus 621,081 controls) measured NAFLD across diverse ancestries. We identified NAFLD-associated variants at torsin family 1 member B (TOR1B), fat mass and obesity associated (FTO), cordon-bleu WH2 repeat protein like 1 (COBLL1)/growth factor receptor-bound protein 14 (GRB14), insulin receptor (INSR), sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor 1 (SREBF1) and patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 2 (PNPLA2), as well as validated NAFLD-associated variants at patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3), transmembrane 6 superfamily 2 (TM6SF2), apolipoprotein E (APOE), glucokinase regulator (GCKR), tribbles homolog 1 (TRIB1), glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAM), mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component 1 (MARC1), microsomal triglyceride transfer protein large subunit (MTTP), alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B), transmembrane channel like 4 (TMC4)/membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain containing 7 (MBOAT7) and receptor-type tyrosine-protein phosphatase δ (PTPRD). Implicated genes highlight mitochondrial, cholesterol and de novo lipogenesis as causally contributing to NAFLD predisposition. Phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) analyses suggest at least seven subtypes of NAFLD. Individuals in the top 10% and 1% of genetic risk have a 2.5-fold to 6-fold increased risk of NAFLD, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. These genetic variants identify subtypes of NAFLD, improve estimates of disease risk and can guide the development of targeted therapeutics.

Abstract

Coronary artery calcification (CAC), a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, predicts future symptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD). Identifying genetic risk factors for CAC may point to new therapeutic avenues for prevention. Currently, there are only four known risk loci for CAC identified from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in the general population. Here we conducted the largest multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis of CAC to date, which comprised 26,909 individuals of European ancestry and 8,867 individuals of African ancestry. We identified 11 independent risk loci, of which eight were new for CAC and five had not been reported for CAD. These new CAC loci are related to bone mineralization, phosphate catabolism and hormone metabolic pathways. Several new loci harbor candidate causal genes supported by multiple lines of functional evidence and are regulators of smooth muscle cell-mediated calcification ex vivo and in vitro. Together, these findings help refine the genetic architecture of CAC and extend our understanding of the biological and potential druggable pathways underlying CAC.

50. Impact of different stall layouts with robotic milking systems on the behavioral pattern of multiparous cows

Abstract

The present study aimed to compare the efficiency of different pens and animal flow configuration layouts in freestall pens using a robotic milking system (RMS) with guided flow based on the behavioral patterns of multiparous lactating Holstein dairy cows in a commercial farm. The behavior of 24 cows in freestall pens was evaluated, divided into 4 different stall configurations: original (OR), conversion (CVS), toll-booth I (TBI), and toll-booth II (TBII), each featuring distinct circulation layouts with different configurations of location, position, and number of guided-flow RMS equipment, feed bunk, water trough, commitment pen, sand beds, sorting gates, and one-way gate. Six multiparous cows, parity 2 or 3, with an average (± SD) of 180 ± 20 DIM, were randomly selected from each freestall pen for focal assessment of behavioral patterns. The location, position, and behavior of each animal were recorded in a field ethogram, with individual sequences recorded at 15-min intervals using the focal method during 6 nonconsecutive 10-h periods in each pen, and the proportion of observed time for each behavior was assessed. The pens differed in the number of available milking robots (1, 2, or 3), the number of animals per robot, the quantity and orientation of smart doors, and the placement of feed bunks, water troughs, and sand beds. A completely randomized experimental design was used to compare the 4 stalls, with a nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, in which the medians of the treatments were then compared with the Dunn test at a significance level of 5%, using the Minitab software. The behavioral pattern of cows exhibited differences based on the stall configuration with RMS as a proportion of the observed time (60 h). The TBI stall configuration, where the animal needs to be milked to exit the milking robot, showed a higher percentage of observed time spent in the sand bed (68%) and lying position (64%) compared with other stalls, as a proportion of the observed time (60 h). Notably, the TBII stall exhibited a significant amount as a proportion of observed time (60 h) in the holding area (16%), possibly attributed to a layout with a higher number of animals per robot, emphasizing the importance of respecting the number of animals per robot when housing in a stall with RMS. Thus, spatial configuration and the density of robotic systems are factors that influence the behavioral pattern of dairy cows.
