The distribution of surface particulate matter (PM2.5) exhibits significant spatiotemporal patterns, especially with a spatial clustering effect. Therefore, resolving spatial characteristics is essential in the modeling process. This study proposes a space–time varying coefficients (STVC-LG) model by considering spatial effects from the perspective of eigenvector spatial filtering and incorporating spatial effects and temporal features into the LightGBM model to estimate ground PM2.5. A site-based cross-validation result of the estimated daily 1 km PM2.5 concentration in China from 2016 to 2020 shows that the proposed model offers high accuracy, an R2 of 0.88, and an RMSE of 12.21 μg/m3 (17% and 32% enhanced compared to the original LightGBM model). It uses a series of spatial eigenvectors to describe different spatial patterns. It then constructs spatial interaction terms by combining the eigenvectors and influencing variables, allowing the values of the variable to vary spatially with the eigenvectors. The obtained PM2.5, with a decreasing trend, had a clear distributional consistency with NO2 and SO2 according to the co-occurrence distribution maps, particularly in winter. In areas where high concentrations co-occur, both NO2 and SO2 concentrations are Granger-causing PM2.5 concentrations from a statistical perspective.

Abstract Climate models commonly overestimate warm rain frequency and underestimate its intensity over the ocean, primarily due to insufficient representation of the aerosol effects. This pertains to both fine aerosols (FA) and coarse sea spray aerosols (CSA), where the latter is mostly absent in the models. Here, our observations show that adding CSA enhances vertical warm rain structure, in contrast to the effect of FA. The magnitude of the effect of CSA is larger than the opposite effect of the FA. For rain with top heights of 2–3 km, the raindrop size, concentration, and rain rate can be increased by factors of 1.03, 1.47, and 1.60, respectively. These CSA-induced changes are larger for thicker clouds, reaching a maximum by factors of 1.12, 1.85, and 2.21, respectively. Therefore, the combined FA and CSA effects should be incorporated into climate models for accurately simulated precipitation microphysical processes.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that aerosols invigorate deep convective systems (DCS). However, the magnitude or even the existence of aerosol invigoration of DCS remains controversial. Here, we aimed to observationally quantify the full aerosol effects on DCS by tracking their entire lifecycle and spatial extent in tropical regions. We found that fine aerosols (FA) can invigorate DCS, making them taller and longer lived, and resulting in up to ×5 increase in total area and rainfall amount. In contrast, added coarse sea salt aerosols (CSA) over the ocean can inhibit the vertical development of DCS through enhancing warm rain formation, yet resulting in longer lived and extensive DCSs. Notably, combining FA and CSA generates the strongest aerosol invigoration effect at the concentrations of ~5 and ~80 μg/m³, leading up to ×10 increase in rainfall amount. Our results indicate that aerosols significantly redistribute convective precipitation and climate effects, greatly underestimated in previous studies.

Abstract China is likely the world's largest anthropogenic source of methane emissions, with coal mine methane (CMM) being the predominant contributor. Here, we deploy 2 years of satellite observations to survey facility‐level CMM emitters in Shanxi, the most prolific coal mining province in China. A total of 138 detected episodic events at 82 facilities are estimated to emit 1.20 (+0.24/−0.20, 95% CI) million tons of methane per year (Mt CH4/yr) during 2021–2023, roughly equivalent to 4.2 times the integrated flux from the Permian plumes and four times of the integrated flux from the Four Corners plumes, two of the world's largest hotspots for oil and gas methane emissions. This work reveals the heavy‐tailed distribution characteristic of CMM emission sources for the first time, with 20% of emitters contributing approximately 50% of total emissions. Comparison with the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) inventory reveals that the GEM estimate is about 4.1 times our estimate.

Abstract The fraction of cloud water compared to its adiabatic value is defined as the adiabatic fraction, fad. The accuracy of cloud representation in climate models is highly sensitive to mixing rate, manifested in fad. Here, we present the first fad distribution of marine boundary layer clouds over global oceans, retrieved by satellite observations. The fad is shown to decrease exponentially with cloud base temperature (CBT) and cloud depth, in agreement with the increasing evaporation capacity of entrained warmer air. Cloud cover decreases with increasing CBT, but to a much lesser extent than fad. The dependence of fad on CBT has little dependence on relative humidity or precipitation. The relationship between CBT and fad highlights the importance of CBT as a core control factor on cloud evaporation. The simultaneous decrease in cloud water content and cover with increasing CBT can lead to positive cloud feedback, resulting in greater future climate warming.

Fine aerosols strongly reduce cloud drop size and suppress rainfall from marine warm clouds, whereas coarse sea spray has an opposite and independent effect of comparable magnitude, according to an analysis of satellite spectrometer and radar observations.

Abstract Aerosols can invigorate deep convective clouds (DCCs) directly by nucleating more cloud droplets, named as Primary Aerosol Convective Invigoration (PAI). However, the covarying Meteorology‐Aerosol Invigoration (MAI) effect on DCC has been a long‐standing issue in quantifying PAI's contribution. Here, observations show that PAI causes positive feedback from DCC to meteorology, further invigorating DCC through enhanced humidity, updraft and destabilization, thereby adding to MAI. Further, PAI is separated from MAI observationally by quantifying the sensitivity of DCC properties to aerosol changes under fixed meteorology through the artificial neural network. When fine aerosol changes from the cleanest to optimal concentration (5 μg m−3), PAI contributes 72% ± 2% of the total aerosol‐associated cloud top cooling by 12°C, 42% ± 4% of the 30% prolonged lifetime, and 50% ± 4% of the more than doubled rainfall. This result underlines the comparable magnitudes of PAI and MAI, which have not been considered until now in weather and climate prediction.

Previous hypotheses cannot fully explain the large lightning excess over land compared to ocean. It is found that coarse sea spray that create large drops precipitates cloud water before it can freeze, thus robbing the fuel for cloud electrification

The J-TEXT capability is enhanced compared to two years ago with several upgrades of its diagnostics and the increase of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) power to 1 MW. With the application of electron cyclotron wave (ECW), the ECW assisted plasma startup is achieved; the tearing mode is suppressed; the toroidal injection of 300 kW ECW drives around 24 kA current; fast electrons are generated with toroidal injected ECW and the runaway current conversion efficiency increases with ECRH power. The mode coupling between 2/1 and 3/1 modes are extensively studied. The coupled 2/1 and 3/1 modes usually lead to major disruption. Their coupling can be either suppressed or avoided by external resonant magnetic perturbation fields and hence avoids the major disruption. It is also found that the 2/1 threshold of external field is significantly reduced by a pre-excited 3/1 mode, which can be either a locked island or an external kink mode. The disruption control is studied by developing prediction methods capable of cross tokamak application and by new mitigation methods, such as the biased electrode or electromagnetic pellet injector. The high-density operation and related disruptions are studied from various aspects. Approaching the density limit, the collapse of the edge shear layer is observed and such collapse can be prevented by applying edge biasing, leading to an increased density limit. The density limit is also observed to increase, if the plasma is operated in the poloidal divertor configuration or the plasma purity is increased by increasing the pre-filled gas pressure or ECRH power during the start-up phase.

The rotating resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) could lock the tearing mode (TM) and prevent disruption. It is found that the TM instantaneous frequency oscillates during TM locking on the RMP. In this work, the TM frequency oscillation was derived analytically based on the toroidal torque balance, which was verified experimentally. It is found that two peaks with higher frequency (2fTM0-fRMP) and lower frequency (fRMP) occurred in the spectrum when the window width of FFT was shorter than the TM frequency oscillating period. Those two peaks were explained analytically based on the description of TM instantaneous frequency. The independence of the temporal information and the spatial information of the TM was explained analytically and verified by the spatial structure analysis of each peaks. This work is important for mode structure identification and provides a scheme for mode coupling control.

Previous studies have shown that it is feasible to retrieve multiple cloud properties simultaneously based on the space-borne hyperspectral observation in the oxygen A-band, such as cloud optical depth, cloud-top height, and cloud geometrical thickness. However, hyperspectral remote sensing is time-consuming if based on the precise radiative transfer solution that counts multiple scatterings of light. To speed up the radiation transfer solution in cloud scenarios for nadir space-borne observations, we developed a physical parameterization of hyperspectral reflectance in the oxygen A-band for single-layer water clouds. The parameterization takes into account the influences of cloud droplet forward-scattering and nonlinear oxygen absorption on hyperspectral reflectance, which are improvements over the previous studies. The performance of the parameterization is estimated through comparison with DISORT (Discrete Ordinates Radiative Transfer Program Multi-Layered Plane-Parallel Medium) on the cases with solar zenith angle θ, the cloud optical depth τc, and the single-scattering albedo ω in the range of 0 ≤ θ ≤ 75, 5 ≤ τc ≤ 50, 0.5 ≤ ω ≤ 1. The relative error of the cloud reflectance is within 5% for most cases, even for clouds with optical depths around five or at strong absorption wavelengths. We integrate the parameterization with a slit function and a simplified atmosphere to evaluate its performance in simulating the observed cloud reflection at the top of the atmosphere by OCO-2 (Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2). To better visualize the possible errors from the new parameterization, gas molecular scattering, aerosol scattering, and reflection from the underlying surface are ignored. The relative error of the out-of-band radiance is less than 4% and the relative error of the intra-band radiance ratio is less than 4%. The radiance ratio is the ratio of simulated observations with and without in-cloud absorption and is used to assess the accuracy of the parameterization in quantifying the in-cloud absorption. The parameterization is a preparation for rapid hyperspectral remote sensing in the oxygen A-band. It would help to improve retrieval efficiency and provide cloud geometric thickness products.

Reliable aerosol optical depth (AOD) data with high spatial and temporal resolutions are needed for research on air pollution in China. AOD products from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the geostationary Himawari-8 satellite and reanalysis datasets make it possible to capture diurnal variations of aerosol loadings. However, due to the different retrieval methods, their applicability may vary with different space and time. Thus, in this study, taking the measured AOD at the Aerosol Robotic NETwork (AERONET) stations as the gold standard, the performance of the latest AHI hourly AOD product (i.e., L3 AOD) was evaluated and then compared with that of two reanalysis AOD datasets offered by Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), respectively, covering from July 2015 to December 2017 over China. For all the matchups, AHI AOD shows the highest robustness with a high correlation (R) of 0.82, low root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.23, and moderate mean absolute relative error (MARE) of 0.56. Although MERRA-2 and CAMS products both have lower R values (0.74, 0.72) and higher RMSE (0.28, 0.26), the former is slightly better than the latter. Accuracy of AOD products could be mainly affected by the pollution level and less affected by particle size distribution. Comparisons among these AOD products imply that AHI AOD is more reliable in regions with high pollution levels, such as central and eastern China, while in the northern and western part, MERRA-2 AOD seems more satisfying. The performance of all the three AOD products presents a significant diurnal variety, as indicated by the highest accuracy in the morning for AHI and at noon for reanalysis data. Moreover, due to various pollution distribution patterns and meteorological conditions, there are distinct seasonal characteristics in the performance of AOD products for different regions.

A Raman Lidar (RL) system is developed to measure the water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) and aerosol optical property in Wuhan with high temporal-spatial resolution during rainless nights. The principle of the self-developed lidar system and data processing method are discussed. WVMR profiles of a representative case retrieved by RL, Radiosonde (RS), and microwave radiometer (MR) are in good agreement. The relationship of WVMR and aerosol optical depth (AOD) indicates that water vapor dramatically reduces with the decline of the AOD. Moreover, the mean relative difference of mean WVMRs at low-troposphere obtained by RL and RS (MR) is about 5.17% (9.47%) during the analyzed year. The agreement certifies that the self-developed RL system can stably provide accurate and high temporal-spatial resolution data for the fundamental physical studies on water vapor. Furthermore, the maximum AOD from 0.5 km to 3 km is 0.41 at night in spring, which indicates that the air quality in Wuhan is heavily influenced by aerosols that are transported by air mass from the north during this time. Moreover, abundant rainfall led to relatively low AOD in summer (0.22), which demonstrates that water vapor is crucial for air purification.

South Asia is experiencing a levelling-off trend in solar radiation and even a transition from dimming to brightening. Any change in incident solar radiation, which is the only significant energy source of the global ecosystem, profoundly affects our habitats. Here, we use multiple observations of the A-Train constellation to evaluate the impacts of three-dimensional (3D) aerosol, cloud, and water vapor variations on the changes in surface solar radiation during the monsoon season (June–September) in South Asia from 2006 to 2015. Results show that surface shortwave radiation (SSR) has possibly increased by 16.2 W m−2 during this period. However, an increase in aerosol loading is inconsistent with the SSR variations. Instead, clouds are generally reduced and thinned by approximately 8.8% and 280 m, respectively, with a decrease in both cloud water path (by 34.7 g m−2) and particle number concentration under cloudy conditions. Consequently, the shortwave cloud radiative effect decreases by approximately 45.5 W m−2 at the surface. Moreover, precipitable water in clear-sky conditions decreases by 2.8 mm (mainly below 2 km), and related solar brightening increases by 2.5 W m−2. Overall, the decreases in 3D water vapor and clouds distinctly result in increased absorption of SSR and subsequent surface brightening.

Aerosols greatly influence global and regional atmospheric systems, and human life. However, a comprehensive understanding of the source regions and three-dimensional (3D) characteristics of aerosol transport over central China is yet to be achieved. Thus, we investigate the 3D macroscopic, optical, physical, and transport properties of the aerosols over central China based on the March 2007 to February 2016 data obtained from the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission and the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. Our results showed that approximately 60% of the aerosols distributed over central China originated from local areas, whereas non-locally produced aerosols constituted approximately 40%. Anthropogenic aerosols constituted the majority of the aerosol pollutants (69%) that mainly distributed less than 2.0 km above mean sea level. Natural aerosols, which are mainly composed of dust, accounted for 31% of the total aerosols, and usually existed at an altitude higher than that of anthropogenic aerosols. Aerosol particles distributed in the near surface were smaller and more spherical than those distributed above 2.0 km. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the particulate depolarization ratio displayed decreasing trends, with a total decrease of 0.11 and 0.016 from March 2007 to February 2016, respectively. These phenomena indicate that during the study period, the extinction properties of aerosols decreased, and the degree of sphericity in aerosol particles increased. Moreover, the annual anthropogenic and natural AOD demonstrated decreasing trends, with a total decrease of 0.07 and 0.04, respectively. This study may benefit the evaluation of the effects of the 3D properties of aerosols on regional climates.

Monitoring fine particulate matter with diameters of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) is a critical endeavor in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, which is one of the most polluted areas in China. Polar orbit satellites are limited by observation frequency, which is insufficient for understanding PM2.5 evolution. As a geostationary satellite, Himawari-8 can obtain hourly optical depths (AODs) and overcome the estimated PM2.5 concentrations with low time resolution. In this study, the evaluation of Himawari-8 AODs by comparing with Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements showed Himawari-8 retrievals (Level 3) with a mild underestimate of about −0.06 and approximately 57% of AODs falling within the expected error established by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (±(0.05 + 0.15AOD)). Furthermore, the improved linear mixed-effect model was proposed to derive the surface hourly PM2.5 from Himawari-8 AODs from July 2015 to March 2017. The estimated hourly PM2.5 concentrations agreed well with the surface PM2.5 measurements with high R2 (0.86) and low RMSE (24.5 μg/m3). The average estimated PM2.5 in the BTH region during the study time range was about 55 μg/m3. The estimated hourly PM2.5 concentrations ranged extensively from 35.2 ± 26.9 μg/m3 (1600 local time) to 65.5 ± 54.6 μg/m3 (1100 local time) at different hours.

The planetary boundary layer (PBL) is an atmospheric region near the Earth’s surface. It is significant for weather forecasting and for the study of air quality and climate. In this study, the top of nocturnal residual layers—which are what remain of the daytime mixing layer—are estimated by an elastic backscatter Lidar in Wuhan (30.5°N, 114.4°E), a city in Central China. The ideal profile fitting method is widely applied to determine the nocturnal residual layer height (RLH) from Lidar data. However, the method is seriously affected by an optical thick layer. Thus, we propose an improved iterative fitting method to eliminate the optical thick layer effect on RLH detection using Lidar. Two typical case studies observed by elastic Lidar are presented to demonstrate the theory and advantage of the proposed method. Results of case analysis indicate that the improved method is more practical and precise than profile-fitting, gradient, and wavelet covariance transform method in terms of nocturnal RLH evaluation under low cloud conditions. Long-term observations of RLH performed with ideal profile fitting and improved methods were carried out in Wuhan from 28 May 2011 to 17 June 2016. Comparisons of Lidar-derived RLHs with the two types of methods verify that the improved solution is practical. Statistical analysis of a six-year Lidar signal was conducted to reveal the monthly average values of nocturnal RLH in Wuhan. A clear RLH monthly cycle with a maximum mean height of about 1.8 km above ground level was observed in August, and a minimum height of about 0.7 km was observed in January. The variation in monthly mean RLH displays an obvious quarterly dependence, which coincides with the annual variation in local surface temperature.

In recent years, frequent occurrences of significant air pollution events in China have routinely caused panic and are a major topic of discussion by the public and air pollution experts in government and academia. Therefore, this study proposed an efficient visualization method to represent directly, quickly, and clearly the spatio-temporal information contained in air pollution data. Data quality check and cleansing during a preliminary visual analysis is presented in tabular form, heat matrix, or line chart, upon which hypotheses can be deduced. Further visualizations were designed to verify the hypotheses and obtain useful findings. This method was tested and validated in a year-long case study of the air quality index (AQI of PM2.5) in Beijing, China. We found that PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 may be emitted by the same sources, and strong winds may accelerate the spread of pollutants. The average concentration of PM2.5 in Beijing was greater than the AQI value of 50 over the six-year study period. Furthermore, arable lands exhibited considerably higher concentrations of air pollutants than vegetation-covered areas. The findings of this study showed that our visualization method is intuitive and reliable through data quality checking and information sharing with multi-perspective air pollution graphs. This method allows the data to be easily understood by the public and inspire or aid further studies in other fields.
