The aim of this work was to characterize the mechanical behavior of the superplastic eutectoid alloy Zn-22% Al on the micro and nanoscale level. For this purpose, advanced experimental testing techniques including nanoindentation and micro pillar compression experiments, were combined with high resolution imaging, including electron microscopy as well as X-ray microscopy. The corresponding results allowed valuable insights into the fundamental deformation mechanism associated to superplastic flow. An asymmetry in the contribution of intragranular dislocation plasticity to the total plastic strain between the a and h-phase of the two-phase alloy is found. This is considered as the origin for the pronounced activity of grain sliding observed for this alloy system. It is demonstrated that grain sliding is not only a surface phenomenon but also relevant within the bulk volume during deformation. The maximum proportion of grain sliding to the overall plastic strain is quantified to be close to 11 %. This direct coupling between intragranular and intergranular plasticity is revealed to require a minimum number of grains in all three dimensions of space. This is demonstrated by a breakdown of the superplastic deformation mechanism below a critical specimen volume, reflected by a transition from superplastic “ductile” to a non-superplastic “brittle” behavior. The critical volume is quantified to be close to a cube comprising 6x6x6 grains. The results provide a comprehensive understanding for the relationship between deformation mechanism, microstructure and ductility in fine grained metallic alloys. They establish a foundation for tailoring the ductility of metallic systems for given applications based on a bottom-up designing process. Furthermore, the findings deliver valuable boundary conditions for the design of micro scale devices with complex geometries by modern micro forming technologies. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit bestand in der Charakterisierung des mechanischen Verhaltens der superplastischen, eutektoiden Legierung Zn-22% Al auf der Mikro- und Nanoskala. Dazu wurden fortschrittliche Testmethoden wie die Nanoindentierung und Mikrosäulen Druckversuche mit hochauflösenden Bildgebungsverfahren wie der Elektronenmikroskopie und der Röntgenmikroskopie kombiniert. Die entsprechenden Ergebnisse lieferten wertvolle Einblicke in die grundlegenden Verformungsmechanismen der Superplastizität. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Beitrag der Versetzungsplastizität zur Gesamtverformung ungleichmäßig zwischen der a und h-Phase der 2- phasigen Legierung aufgeteilt ist. Dies wird als Ursache für die ausgeprägte Relevanz des Korngrenzengleitens in diesem Legierungssystem angesehen. Dabei wird bestätigt, dass Korngrenzengleiten nicht nur ein Oberflächen Phänomen ist, sondern auch im Materialvolumen während der Verformung Relevanz hat. Der maximale Anteil von Korngrenzengleiten an der Gesamtverformung wurde auf etwa 11 % quantifiziert. Diese direkte Verknüpfung zwischen intragranularer und intergranularer Plastizität erfordert eine minimale Anzahl an Körnern in allen drei Raumrichtungen. Dies wird durch ein Verschwinden der Superplastizität unterhalb eines kritischen Probenvolumens bestätigt, was sich in einem Übergang von superplastisch “duktilen” zu einem nicht superplastisch “spröden” Verhalten äußert. Das daraus bestimmte kritische Volumen umfasst einen Würfel in der Größenordnung von etwa 6x6x6 Körnern. Die Ergebnisse bieten ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die Zusammenhänge zwischen Verformungsmechanismen, Mikrostruktur und Duktilität in feinkörnigen metallischen Legierungen. Sie liefern eine Basis um die Duktilität von metallischen Systemen je nach Anwendung von Grunde auf einzustellen und zu optimieren. Darüber hinaus stellen die Ergebnisse wertvolle Randbedingungen für den Entwicklungsprozess von Bauteilen komplexer Geometrie auf der Mikroskala bereit, welche durch moderne Umformprozesse auf kleiner Skala hergestellt werden.

Here we report the synthesis of metallic,ultraincompressible (K$_0$ = 428(10) GPa), and very hard (nanoindentation hardness 36.7(8)GPa) rhenium nitride pernitride Re$_2$(N$_2$)(N)$_2$. Unlike known transition metals pernitridesRe$_2$(N$_2$)(N)$_2$ contains both pernitride N$_2$$^{4−}$ and discrete N$^{3−}$ anions, which explains itsexceptional properties. Re$_2$(N$_2$)(N)$_2$ can be obtained via a reaction between rhenium andnitrogen in a diamond anvil cell at pressures from 40 to 90 GPa and is recoverable at ambientconditions. We develop a route to scale up its synthesis through a reaction between rheniumand ammonium azide, NH$_4$N$_3$, in a large-volume press at 33 GPa.
