Abstract

AI and machine learning based approaches are becoming ubiquitous in almost all engineering fields. Control engineering cannot escape this trend. In this paper, we explore how AI tools can be useful in control applications. The core tool we focus on is automatic differentiation. Two immediate applications are linearization of system dynamics for local stability analysis or for state estimation using Kalman filters. We also explore other usages such as conversion of differential algebraic equations to ordinary differential equations for control design. In addition, we explore the use of machine learning models for global parameterizations of state vectors and control inputs in model predictive control applications. For each considered use case, we give examples and results.

3. Hagiographies of Maternal Bodies: Corporality, Gender, and Citizenship in Argentina

Abstract

Taking “gobernar es poblar” as a key mandate to Argentine women, this doctoral thesis will trace the centrality of motherhood to women’s citizenship and to the Argentine national imaginary writ large. Specifically, this project is based on an array of cultural productions, including novels, poetry, artwork, and film, along with archival documents, cultural artifacts, and theories from several fields, pertinent to the main topic of this thesis: the way post-mortem maternal/female bodies are notably depicted and reproduced around the model of sacrificial motherhood as a central site of reference for national identity building in Argentina. Among the analytic objectives that guided the direction of this dissertation are the following assumptions and hypotheses: 1. Women’s citizenship and participation in the public sphere was dictated by maternity, as defined through Republican Motherhood; 2. Through foundational narratives’ depictions of mothers, this exemplar was disseminated and reproduced as a model to be followed, or in a similar vein, narratives of “bad” mothers were circulated as cautionary tales, as in the case of La Cautiva; 3. As motherhood determined citizenship, rewriting these maternal archetypes can serve as a means of exploring the gendered, racialized, and class-based constraints this citizenship entailed; 4. Depictions of la Difunta Correa and Eva Per�n can be considered examples of these reinterpretations due to their reliance on maternal tropes and the subjects’ relevance to women’s civic engagement, and therefore prove useful as vehicles for examining the limiting of women’s political status; 5. The situating of la Difunta’s and Evita’s narratives beyond their original historical moments allows the author to recontextualize the original constraints on women’s citizenship and thereby highlight the continued exclusionary practices of defining a citizenry via identitarian categories, including gender and sexuality. I argue that by reading these modern and contemporary cultural productions depicting la Difunta and Evita through the framework of motherhood and queer theory, the artists are reconfiguring the parameters of citizenship and reimagining the nation.

Abstract

The case of a 22-year-old man with polyneuropathy, endocrinopathy, skin change and monoclonal gammopathy of IgG-lambda type is described. There was no solitary plasmocytoma, osteosclerotic myeloma or Castleman's disease. However, significant thrombocytosis occurred and the patient developed arterial thrombosis, these were attributed to essential thrombocythaemia in the absence of other aetiological factors.

48. India’s Great Slowdown: What Happened? What’s the Way Out?

Abstract

We examine the pattern of growth in the 2010s. Standard explanations cannot account for the long slowdown, followed by a sharp collapse. Our explanation stresses both structural and cyclical factors, with finance as the distinctive, common element. In the immediate aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), two key drivers of growth decelerated. Export growth slowed sharply as world trade stagnated, while investment fell victim to a homegrown Balance Sheet crisis, which came in two waves. The first wave—the Twin Balance Sheet crisis, encompassing banks and infrastructure companies—arrived when the infrastructure projects started during India’s investment boom of the mid-2000s began to go sour. The economy nonetheless continued to grow, despite temporary, adverse demonetization and GST shocks, propelled first by income gains from the large fall in international oil prices, then by government spending and a non-bank financial company (NBFC)-led credit boom. This credit boom financed unsustainable real estate inventory accumulation, inflating a bubble that finally burst in 2019. Consequently, consumption too has now sputtered, causing growth to collapse. As a result, India is now facing a Four Balance Sheet challenge—the original two sectors, plus NBFCs and real estate companies—and is trapped in an adverse interest-growth dynamic, in which risk aversion is leading to high interest rates, depressing growth, and generating more risk aversion. Standard remedies are unavailable: monetary policy is stymied by a broken transmission mechanism; large fiscal stimulus will only push up already-high interest rates, worsening the growth dynamic. The traditional structural reform agenda—land and labour market measures—are important for the medium run but will not address the current problems. Addressing the Four Balance Sheet problem decisively will be critical to durably reviving growth. Raising agricultural productivity is also high priority.
