Lena Dominelli is a scholar, social justice activist, and public intellectual. A pioneer in the field, she has long put social work under the microscope, revealing its gaps and contributions. The battered women's movement lost a great leader and visionary when Susan Schechter died of endrometrial cancer in 2004. Schechter's legacy reminds advocates for battered women of how efforts to develop safe places for battered women began, the context of those times, how far we have come, and how far we still have to go. Her pioneering work in the area of the overlap between child maltreatment and adult domestic violence and services to children who are exposed to domestic violence has left the social work profession with a challenging agenda that must be met to create safety for all women and children. Harriet Tubman's widely recognized successful work for the Underground Railroad overshadowed many other noteworthy contributions she made as a peacemaker and stateswoman. She rose above the societal limitations imposed by being enslaved and a woman and made unparalleled contributions to the cause of social justice. Tubman's commitment to family unification was a driving force for the perilous trips she made for the Underground Railroad. Her legacy includes being a formidable commander and strategist in the U.S. Civil War. In addition, Tubman was instrumental in helping many African Americans transition to freedom and economic sufficiency during the pre- and post-Civil War Reconstruction eras. In her late sixties, Tubman purchased land to fulfill her vision of providing housing and supportive services for older and indigent African Americans. For more than 20 years, she worked tirelessly using self-help, mutual aid, and partnerships to fulfill her dream of the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged. This paper traces the life course of Ellen Louks Fairclough, Canada's first federal female cabinet minister (1957-63), discusses the factors that contributed to her success in civic and federal elections in Hamilton between 1946 and 1963, and assesses her achievements as the lone woman in the Progressive Conservative cabinet led by John Diefenbaker. While Fairclough claims not to be a feminist, it is argued here that her public and private choices were shaped by middle class feminist goals as they were defined in North America in the interwar years and that these goals had a significant impact on the policies adopted by both Fairclough and the party she represented in the 1940s and 1950s.

Josephine Preston Peabody, an early 20th century writer and feminist, has received insufficient recognition for her literary efforts. Peabody was a pioneer in the early 20th century revival of American drama and poetry. Her work included 'Portrait of Mrs. W.: A Play in Three Acts with an Epilogue' on the life of Mary Wollstonecraft, 'The Piper' and much poetry. She also wrote material on women's rights.

Sarah Devereux Garrison was a 19th century Texan who expanded the social role of women while not rebelling against traditional femininity. Her first husband died in 1856, and she took over control of the family plantation for the next 13 years. She became a public supporter of the Southern cause in the Civil War. Her second marriage fared poorly, and she became a teacher and rented rooms to boarders. The marriage ended in divorce, and she maintained independence for herself thereafter.

Feminist epistemology suggests the need for a reconceptualisation of autobiography and biography. The article is autobiographical in that it draws upon the experiences of the writers. It is specifically concerned with their personal biographies regarding their academic development and their experience of feminist qualitative research within sociology. It is concerned to show how doing feminist research involves weaving the stories of both the researcher and the researched, and also how the lives of 'significant others' are part of any completed piece. Each experience of research is different. This means that the researcher's autobiography has a different place among the biographies of the researched, depending on the individuals involved and the nature of the research topic. Consideration is given to the problems of including the researcher's autobiography in the fieldwork and publication stages. The research experience prompts not only a re-evaluation of the past, but also alters the personal biographies of the future for all those involved. Attention to these issues clearly shows that autobiography and biography are relevant to a wide variety of work and should be central to a sociological approach.
