Search

Many small and medium-sized physics experiments are being conducted worldwide. These experiments have similar requirements for readout electronics, especially the back-end electronics. Some experiments need a trigger logic unit(TLU) to provide timing and synchronous control signals. This paper introduces a back-end electronics design for small and medium-sized physics experiments; it adopts a daughter-motherboard structure integrated TLU function to provide greater flexibility. Different interfaces and protocols can be flexibly selected according to data bandwidth requirements. It supports 32 optical fiber interfaces based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) of normal IOs with 400Mbps of data bandwidth for each channel. At the same time, it supports 16 high-speed communication interfaces based on GTX port with several Gbps data bandwidth of each channel. For the TLU function, this design has 8 HDMI interfaces and one RJ45 interface to provide synchronous triggers and other control signals, and it has six analog LEMOs and four digital LEMOs to accept asynchronous signals from an external source. These design specifications can meet the needs of most small and medium-sized experiments. This set of back-end electronics has been successfully used in experiments such as PandaX-III, VLAST, and moungraphy. Moreover, it has successfully conducted beam tests with a readout of the data of VLAST detectors at CERN.

Micro-pattern gas detectors (MPGD) find wide-ranging applications in particle physics experiments, industry, and medical services, owing to their large area, fine spatial resolution, and relatively low material content within the sensitive region. However, the demand for a large number of readout channels poses a bottleneck, limiting the application of MPGD to achieve higher accuracy and more extensive area. This requirement also presents significant challenges regarding system integration, power consumption, cooling, and cost. Previous studies have shown that, under sparse effective hits, a channel multiplexing method based on position encoded can address this issue. Nonetheless, improving the compression ratio and addressing the high event rate problem remain key challenges requiring further investigation. In this research, we have developed two types of high compression ratio multiplexing methods and their mathematical models. It is shown that a maximum of $n \times (n-1)/2 - (n - 2)/2 + 1$ detector channels can be read out with n electronics channels if n is even. Using these methods, several multiplexing boards were designed and implemented. Considering the real condition of the detectors, we achieved an multiplexing board with 64 readout electronics reading out 1024 detector channels, marking the highest compression ratio in current research. Moreover, these multiplexing circuits were utilized and verified in our cosmic-ray muon imaging facilities, demonstrating their advantage of reducing the required number of front-end electronics cards., Comment: This is the first submitted version to the IEEE-TNS

Muon imaging technology is an innovative imaging technique that can be applied in volcano imaging, heavy nuclear material detection, and archaeological research. The Micromegas detector is a promising choice for muon imaging due to its high spatial resolution and large area. However, the large number of readout channels poses a challenge for electronics. In this paper, a compact front-end electronics (FEE) for reading Micromegas detectors is presented. The electronics use a current-based readout chip, ADAS1128, which integrates 128 current amplifiers for multi-channel charge measurement. After noise and calibration tests, detector energy resolution tests were performed using 5.9 keV X-rays. The X-ray full energy peak and Ar escape peak can be observed; the energy resolution of the full energy peak is about 20.23%@5.9 keV. Additionally, a muon image system was set up to verify the imaging capacity of Micromegas detectors. Test results show that the spatial resolution of the system is better than 200 {\mu}m. The muon image system can reconstruct the boundaries for objects with a size of 2 cm.

Environmental $\gamma$-rays constitute a crucial source of background in various nuclear, particle and quantum physics experiments. To evaluate the flux rate and the spectrum of $\gamma$ background, we have developed a novel and straightforward approach to reconstruct the environmental $\gamma$ flux spectrum by applying a portable CZT $\gamma$ detector and iterative Bayesian unfolding, which possesses excellent transferability for broader applications. In this paper, the calibration and GEANT4 Monte-Carlo modeling of the CZT detector, the unfolding procedure as well as the uncertainty estimation are demonstrated in detail. The reconstructed spectrum reveals an environmental $\gamma$ flux intensity of $3.3\pm 0.9\times 10^{7}$~ (m$^2\cdot$sr$\cdot$hour)$^{-1}$ ranging from 73 to 3033~keV, along with characteristic peaks primarily arising from $^{232}$Th series, $^{238}$U series and $^{40}$K. We also give an instance of background rate evaluation with the unfolded spectrum for validation of the approach.

COMET is a leading experiment to search for coherent conversion of $\mu^- \mathrm{N}\to e^- \mathrm{N}$ with a high-intensity pulsed muon beamline, produced by the innovative slow extraction techniques. Therefore, it is critical to measure the characteristics of the muon beam. We set up a Muon Beam Monitor (MBM), where scintillation fibers (SciFi) weaved in the cross shape are coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), to measure the spatial profile and timing structure of the extracted muon beam for COMET. The MBM detector has been tested successfully with a proton beamline in China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and taken data with good performance in the commissioning run called COMET Phase-$\alpha$. Experience of the MBM development, such as the mechanical structure and electronics readout, and its beam measurement results will be shared.

High-resolution beam telescopes for charged particle tracking are one of the most important and equally demanding infrastructure items at test beam facilities. The main purpose of beam telescopes is to provide precise reference track information of beam particles to measure the performance of a device under test (DUT). In this report the development of the ADENIUM beam telescope (ALPIDE sensor based DESY Next test beam Instrument) as a demonstrator and prototype for a next-generation beam telescope is presented. The ADENIUM beam telescope features up to six pixelated reference planes framed by plastic scintillators for triggering. ADENIUM is capable of replacing the currently used EUDET-type beam telescopes without impacting existing DUT implementations due to the integration of the telescope DAQ into EUDAQ2. In this report the concept and design of the ADENIUM telescope as well as its performance are discussed. The telescope's pointing resolution is determined in different configurations. For an optimal setup at an momentum of 5.6 GeV with an ALPIDE as DUT, a resolution better than 3 um has been extracted. This paper presents a novel encoding method for fine time data of a tapped delay line (TDL) time-to-digital Converter (TDC). It is based on divide-and-conquer strategy, and has the advantage of significantly reducing logic resource utilization while retaining low dead-time performance. Furthermore, the problem of high bubble depth in advanced devices can be resolved with this method. Four examples are demonstrated, which were implemented in a Xilinx Artix-7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device, and encoding method presented in this paper was employed to encode fine time data for normal TDL TDC, a half-length delay line TDC, and double-edge and four-edge wave union TDCs. Compared with TDCs from the latest published papers that adopt traditional encoders, the logic utilization of TDCs in this paper were reduced by a factor of 45% to 70% in different situations, while the encoding dead time can be restricted in one clock cycle. Acceptable resolutions of the demonstrated TDCs were also obtained, proving the functionality of the encoding method.

This paper reports on the development of a resource-efficient FPGA-based neural network regression model for potential applications in the future hardware muon trigger system of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Effective real-time selection of muon candidates is the cornerstone of the ATLAS physics programme. With the planned ATLAS upgrades for the High Luminosity LHC, an entirely new FPGA-based hardware muon trigger system will be installed that will process full muon detector data within a 10 ${\mu}s$ latency window. The large FPGA devices planned for this upgrade should have sufficient spare resources to allow deployment of machine learning methods for improving identification of muon candidates and searching for new exotic particles. Our neural network regression model promises to improve rejection of the dominant source of background trigger events in the central detector region, which are due to muon candidates with low transverse momenta. This model was implemented in FPGA using 157 digital signal processors and about 5,000 lookup tables. The simulated network latency and deadtime are 122 and 25 ns, respectively, when implemented in the FPGA device using a 320 MHz clock frequency. Two other FPGA implementations were also developed to study the impact of design choices on resource utilisation and latency. The performance parameters of our FPGA implementation are well within the requirements of the future muon trigger system, therefore opening a possibility for deploying machine learning methods for future data taking by the ATLAS experiment., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures

The Forbush Decrease (FD) represents the rapid decrease of the intensities of charged particles accompanied with the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or high-speed streams from coronal holes. It has been mainly explored with ground-based neutron monitors network which indirectly measure the integrated intensities of all species of cosmic rays by counting secondary neutrons produced from interaction between atmosphere atoms and cosmic rays. The space-based experiments can resolve the species of particles but the energy ranges are limited by the relative small acceptances except for the most abundant particles like protons and helium. Therefore, the FD of cosmic ray electrons and positrons have just been investigated by the PAMELA experiment in the low energy range ($<5$ GeV) with limited statistics. In this paper, we study the FD event occurred in September, 2017, with the electron and positron data recorded by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. The evolution of the FDs from 2 GeV to 20 GeV with a time resolution of 6 hours are given. We observe two solar energetic particle events in the time profile of the intensity of cosmic rays, the earlier and weak one has not been shown in the neutron monitor data. Furthermore, both the amplitude and recovery time of fluxes of electrons and positrons show clear energy-dependence, which is important in probing the disturbances of the interplanetary environment by the coronal mass ejections., Comment: This article is dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of People's Republic of China

Cosmic ray muon has strong penetrating power and no ionizing radiation hazards, which makes it an ideal probe for detecting special nuclear materials. In this paper, a high spatial resolution muon tomography system based on Micromegas detectors is proposed to optimize the imaging time and quality. The proposed system includes eight Micromegas detectors based on the thermal bonding technique and a scalable readout system. In addition, a multiplexing method based on position encoding is developed to reduce the number of electronics channels by order of magnitude. The spatial resolution of the proposed system with encoding readout can reach a value of hundred micrometers. Differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li, $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions have been measured at CSNS Back-n white neutron source. Two enriched (90%) $^{10}$B samples 5.0 cm in diameter and ~85.0 ${\mu}$g/cm$^{2}$ in thickness each with an aluminum backing were prepared, and back-to-back mounted at the sample holder. The charged particles were detected using the silicon-detector array of the Light-charged Particle Detector Array (LPDA) system. The neutron energy E$_{n}$ was determined by TOF (time-of-flight) method, and the valid ${\alpha}$ events were extracted from the E$_{n}$-Amplitude two-dimensional spectrum. With 15 silicon detectors, the differential cross sections of ${\alpha}$-particles were measured from 19.2{\deg} to 160.8{\deg}. Fitted with the Legendre polynomial series, the ($n, {\alpha}$) cross sections were obtained through integration. The absolute cross sections were normalized using the standard cross sections of the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the 0.3 - 0.5 MeV neutron energy region. The measurement neutron energy range for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li reaction is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 2.5 MeV (67 energy points), and for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 1.0 MeV (59 energy points). The Back-n white neutron beam line, which uses back-streaming white neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source, is used for nuclear data measurements. A Micromegas-based neutron detector with two variants was specially developed to measure the beam spot distribution for this beam line. In this article, the design, fabrication, and characterization of the detector are described. The results of the detector performance tests are presented, which include the relative electron transparency, the gain and the gain uniformity, and the neutron beam profile reconstruction capability. The Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) is a space mission concept dedicated to monitoring the transient gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 10 keV to 2 MeV using scintillation detectors onboard CubeSats in low Earth orbits. The primary targets of GRID are the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the local universe. The scientific goal of GRID is, in synergy with ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO, to accumulate a sample of GRBs associated with the merger of two compact stars and study jets and related physics of those objects. It also involves observing and studying other gamma-ray transients such as long GRBs, soft gamma-ray repeaters, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and solar flares. With multiple CubeSats in various orbits, GRID is unaffected by the Earth occultation and serves as a full-time and all-sky monitor. Assuming a horizon of 200 Mpc for ground-based GW detectors, we expect to see a few associated GW-GRB events per year. With about 10 CubeSats in operation, GRID is capable of localizing a faint GRB like 170817A with a 90% error radius of about 10 degrees, through triangulation and flux modulation. GRID is proposed and developed by students, with considerable contribution from undergraduate students, and will remain operated as a student project in the future. The current GRID collaboration involves more than 20 institutes and keeps growing. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) developed in China was designed to search for evidence of dark matter particles by observing primary cosmic rays and gamma rays in the energy range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. Since its launch in December 2015, a large quantity of data has been recorded. With the data set acquired during more than a year of operation in space, a precise time-dependent calibration for the energy measured by the BGO ECAL has been developed. In this report, the instrumentation and development of the BGO Electromagnetic Calorimeter (BGO ECAL) are briefly described. The calibration on orbit, including that of the pedestal, attenuation length, minimum ionizing particle peak, and dynode ratio, is discussed, and additional details about the calibration methods and performance in space are presented.

CEPC (Circular Electron and Positron Collider) is a large experiment facility proposed by Chinese particle physics community. One of its running option is being the Higgs factory. Calorimeter is the main part of this experiment to measure the jet energy. Semi-digital hadron calorimeter (SDHCAL) is one of the options for the hadron measurement. GEM detector with its high position resolution and flexible configuration is one of the candidates for the active layer of the SDHCAL. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a feasible readout method for the GEM-based semi-digital hadron calorimeter. A small-scale prototype is designed and implemented, including front-end board (FEB) and data interface board (DIF). The prototype electronics has been tested. The equivalent RMS noise of all channels is below 0.35fC. The dynamic range is up to 500fC and the gain variation is less than 1%. The readout electronics is applied on a double-layer GEM detector with 1cm*1cm readout pad. Result indicates that the electronics works well with the detector. The Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III (PandaX-III) is an experiment to search for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) using 200 kg radio-pure high-pressure gaseous xenon TPC with Micromegas detectors at both ends and cathode in the middle. A small-scale TPC equipped with 7 Microbulk Micromegas detectors is developed as the prototype detector. 128 channels are readout following an X-Y design with strips of 3 mm pitch (64 channels each direction) from one Micromegas module. Highly integrated front-end electronics composed of 4 front-end cards with 1024 readout channels is designed to readout the charge of Micromegas anode signals, digitize the waveform after shaping and send compressed data to the DCM board. The cornerstone of the front-end electronics is a 64-channel application specific integrated circuit which is based on a switched capacitor array. The integral nonlinearity of the front-end electronics is less than 1% with 1 pC. The noise (RMS) of each readout channel is less than 0.9 fC with 1 microsecond peaking time and 1 pC range. Using the radioactive sources 56 Fe and 137 Cs, joint-tests of front-end electronics with the prototype TPC were carried out and the hit map of 7 Micromegas has been reconstructed.

The data compression technology now is fully developed and widely used in many fields such as communication, multi-media, image information processing and so on. The large physical experiments, especially the ones with Micro-pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD), which always have many readout channels and have a lot of data to be transferred and saved, are however relatively seldom use this technology. In this paper, the real-time lossless data compression method is proposed for a general-purposed MPGD readout system. The lossless data compression can reduce the data transmission bandwidth of the system as well as keep all information of the data. The compression method discussed in the paper mainly consists of two steps. The first step is to pre-process the data according to different characteristics of different signals and the second step is to compress the pre-processed data using common lossless compression algorithm. Besides, the whole compression method is implemented in the Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and able to run real-timely. The system is then used to readout two different kinds of signals and the compression rate can reach as high as 43% and 30% respectively.

A 256-channel time-of-flight (TOF) electronics system has been developed for a beam line facility called "Back-n WNS" in China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). This paper shows the structure and performance of electronics system and the test results in CSNS. A 256-channel photomultiplier tube (PMT) is chosen as the detector in this system. In order to acquire the time information from the PMT, an electronics system has been designed. The electronics system mainly includes one front-end board (FEB), four time-to-digital converter (TDC) boards and one clock distribution module (CDM). There are 256 channels on FEB and 64 channels on each TDC board. The FEB is connected to the PMT with high-density connectors and the TDC boards are connected to the FEB through 2m cables. The TDC boards are 6U size so that they can be PCI extensions for Instrumentation (PXI) cards. Data from TDC boards can be transferred to the PXI control card through the backboard. In order to make four TDC boards work synchronously, a CDM outputs four clock signals to TDC boards which are distributed from one clock source. The TDC boards achieve a timing resolution of 3.5ns by test with a signal generator. The TOF measurement system has been used in CSNS.

At the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the Particle AND Astrophysical Xenon phase IV (PandaX-4ton) in planning is a dark matter direct detection experiment with dual-phase xenon detector as an upgrade of the second phase of the experiment, PandaX-II. In this paper, the prototype of the front-end electronics of PandaX-4ton is presented. The front-end electronics consist of the high-gain preamplifier cards and the eight-channel digitizers with 14-bit resolution and 1 GSps sampling rate for waveform digitization. The clock synchronization circuit within the digitizer is well-designed to align all the PMT channels. The digitizer also contains gigabit fiber to exchange data with trigger and data acquisition system. The specification of effective number of bits f the digitizer is about 9.7 b at 148 MHz, and the integral nonlinearity of the digitizer ranges from -4 least significant bit (LSB) to +4 LSB, and the differential nonlinearity ranges from -0.6 LSB to +0.6 LSB. The performance of the front-end electronics can meet the requirements for the PandaX-4ton.

Searching for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) is now regarded as the topmost promising technique to explore the nature of neutrinos after the discovery of neutrino masses in oscillation experiments. PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China Jin Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at both ends of the TPC for the charge readout with a cathode in the middle. Charge signals can be used to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events and provide good energy and spatial resolution. The detector will be immersed in a large water tank to ensure $\sim$5 m of water shielding in all directions. The second phase, a ton-scale experiment, will consist of five TPCs in the same water tank, with improved energy resolution and better control over backgrounds.

A BGO electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is built for the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) mission. The effect of temperature on the BGO ECAL was investigated with a thermal vacuum experiment. The light output of a BGO crystal depends on temperature significantly. The temperature coefficient of each BGO crystal bar has been calibrated, and a correction method is also presented in this paper.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space experiment designed to search for dark matter indirectly by measuring the spectra of photons, electrons, and positrons up to 10 TeV. The BGO electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is its main sub-detector for energy measurement. In this paper, the instrumentation and development of the BGO ECAL is briefly described. The calibration on the ground, including the pedestal, minimum ionizing particle (MIP) peak, dynode ratio, and attenuation length with the cosmic rays and beam particles is discussed in detail. The BGO calorimeter, which provides a wide measurement range of the primary cosmic ray spectrum, is a key sub-detector of Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). The readout electronics of calorimeter consists of 16 pieces of Actel ProASIC Plus FLASH-based FPGA, of which the design-level flip-flops and embedded block RAMs are single event upset (SEU) sensitive in the harsh space environment. Therefore to comply with radiation hardness assurance (RHA), SEU mitigation methods, including partial triple modular redundancy (TMR), CRC checksum, and multi-domain reset are analyzed and tested by the heavy-ion beam test. Composed of multi-level redundancy, a FPGA design with the characteristics of SEU tolerance and low resource consumption is implemented for the readout electronics.

The DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a scientific satellite being developed in China, aimed at cosmic ray study, gamma ray astronomy, and searching for the clue of dark matter particles, with a planned mission period of more than 3 years and an orbit altitude of about 500 km. The BGO Calorimeter, which consists of 308 BGO (Bismuth Germanate Oxid) crystal bars, 616 PMTs (photomultiplier tubes) and 1848 dynode signals, has approximately 32 radiation lengths. It is a crucial sub-detector of the DAMPE payload, with the functions of precisely measuring the energy of cosmic particles from 5 GeV to 10TeV, distinguishing positrons/electrons and gamma rays from hadron background, and providing trigger information for the whole DAMPE payload. The dynamic range for a single BGO crystal is about 2?105 and there are 1848 detector signals in total. To build such an instrument in space, the major design challenges for the readout electronics come from the large dynamic range, the high integrity inside the very compact structure, the strict power supply budget and the long term reliability to survive the hush environment during launch and in orbit. Time interleaved analog-to-digital conversion (TIADC) based on parallelism is an effective way to meet the requirement of the ultra-fast waveform digitizer beyond Gsps. Different methods to correct the mismatch errors among different analog-to-digital conversion channels have been developed previously. To overcome the speed limitation in hardware design and to implement the mismatch correction algorithm in real time, this paper proposes a fully parallel correction algorithm. A 12-bit 1-Gsps waveform digitizer with ENOB around 10.5 bit from 5 MHz to 200 MHz is implemented based on the real-time correction algorithm., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures
