Abstract Biological processes intricately intertwine with tumorigenesis, significantly influencing treatment outcomes and prognosis. However, the mechanisms fostering mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) remain inadequately elucidated. This research utilizes expression profiles of lncRNAs from clinical MEC tissues and matched normal glandular tissues, integrating public data to explore the biological mechanisms and immune microenvironment characteristics of tumorigenesis. Gene set enrichment analysis identified key pathways, and a customized epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) score elucidated the relationship between pathological processes and prognosis, while an immune signature revealed tumor microenvironment characteristics. MECs exhibited significant enrichment in EMT pathway, with key genes such as Secretogranin II, tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2, and periostin identified as contributors to the EMT process. High EMT scores correlated with upregulated EMT and immune response activity, indicating poor prognosis. Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis unveiled the tumors’ immune infiltration signature, suggesting active antigen presentation and a positive immune response for immunotherapy. Additionally, SLC2A1-AS1 and CERS6-AS1 were identified as potential mediators of EMT and the immune environment. This study provides insights into the biological processes of MEC tumorigenesis and identifies potential therapeutic targets for future research.

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to identify serum complement factor-based biomarkers indicative of clinical efficacy in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (SCZ) following treatment with aripiprazole. Methods The retrospective study cohort comprised 40 patients diagnosed with first-episode SCZ (SCZ group) and 40 healthy individuals (control group). Quantitative analyses were conducted on five complement factors, namely complement component 1 (C1), C2, C3, C4, and the 50% hemolytic complement (CH50). Baseline serum complement factor levels were compared between the SCZ and control groups. Patients diagnosed with SCZ underwent a 4-week treatment regimen with aripiprazole. The severity of psychiatric symptoms in these patients was assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-18 Item Version (BPRS). Comparative analyses were conducted on PANSS and BPRS scores, as well as serum complement factor levels, both prior to (pre-treatment group) and following aripiprazole administration (post-treatment group). Pearson’s correlation test was employed to evaluate the relationships between changes in serum complement factor levels and the reduction rates of PANSS/BPRS scores. Abstract Metal nanoparticles have attracted great interest because of their unique near-field enhancement properties, and have important applications in many fields, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), fluorescence enhancement, solar cell efficiency enhancement and so on. In this paper, we use the finite element method to study the local field enhancement characteristics of the coupling system in which the gold ellipsoidal nanoparticles (GENP) on a mirror. In the coupling system, a hot spot will be formed at the gap between the GENP and the mirror under the appropriate incident light excitation. Based on the structural characteristics of GENP, we systematically study the local electric field produced by placing ellipsoids vertically and horizontally on the mirror. Under the excitation of the same polarized incident light, the maximum local electric field of the vertical GENP is 2200 (V/m), while that of the horizontal GENP is more than 9400 (V/m). Our proposed gap coupling system based on metal nanoparticles and thin films may open a new field of interest in the fields of plasmon, sensing, optical limitation and enhancement.

Abstract Co-doping of phosphorus and boron elements into crystalline silicon quantum dot (c-Si QD) is an effective approach for enhancing the photoluminescence (PL) performance. In this paper, we report on the preparation of hydrogenated silicon nitride (SiNx:H) thin films embedded with phosphorus-boron co-doped c-Si QDs via plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition route. Mixed dilution including hydrogen (H2) and argon (Ar) is applied in the in-situ deposition process for optimizing the deposition process. The P-B co-doped c-Si QD/SiNx:H thin films exhibit a wide range of PL spectra. The emission is greatly improved especially for the short-wavelength light when compared to the SiOx:H thin film containing P-B co-doped c-Si QDs. The effects of H2/Ar flow ratio on the structural and optical characteristics of thin films are systematically investigated through a series of characterizations. Experimental results show that various properties, such as crystallinity, QD size, optical band gap and doping concentrations, are effectively controlled by tuning H2/Ar flow ratio. Based on the red-shift of QCE-related PL peak, the successful P-B co-doping into Si QDs are verified. Finally, a comprehensive discussion has been made to analyze the influence of H2-Ar mixed dilution on the film growth and impurity doping in detail in this paper.

Porcine circovirus (PCV) belongs to the genus Circovirus within the family Circoviridae; it has the smallest genome and a complicated classification system comprising PCV1, PCV2, PCV3, and PCV4. Most types of these viruses can cause animals to develop serious diseases; in pigs in particular, it may manifest as postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), reproductive failure, porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), congenital tremors (CTs), proliferative and necrotizing pneumonia (PNP), lymphoid injury, and immunosuppression. Different types of PCVs cause different types of diseases and sometimes feature no pathogenicity; these various PCV types are associated with different pathomechanisms in animals. In this review, the genomic composition and systemic pathomechanisms of porcine circoviruses are introduced, and future research prospects are discussed.

In this study, we considered the compressible effect on the mutual interaction of two cavitation bubbles by correcting the sound field emitted by one bubble in the radial equations of the other bubble to first order in the Mach number of the flow, and the effect is represented by the incident wave acting on bubbles. The results illustrates that the incident wave can enhance the resonance response at the redistributed resonance frequency, which leads to an increase in radial acceleration and the secondary Bjerknes force, and rapid approach of bubbles. Furthermore, the influence of incident wave on the interaction of bubbles driven at lower frequencies is more significant, due to resonance enhancement caused by the proximity of natural frequencies and frequency multiplications of the external sound field. Our findings reveal that the compressible effect is not only critical to interaction in radial oscillations, but also in translational motion.

Abstract Objective Accumulating evidence supports the idea that inflammation may contribute to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Duloxetine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, exhibits anti-inflammatory effects both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated the impact of duloxetine on changes in serum proinflammatory cytokine levels among individuals diagnosed with MDD. Methods A cohort of 23 drug-naïve individuals diagnosed with MDD and 23 healthy controls were included in this study. The severity of depressive symptoms was evaluated using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24). A panel of 7 proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), were quantified using multiplex Luminex assays. The levels of serum cytokines in healthy controls and patients with MDD were compared at baseline. All patients received duloxetine at a dosage range of 40–60 mg/day for a duration of 4 weeks. The HAMD-24 scores and serum cytokine levels were compared before and after duloxetine treatment. Results Compared with healthy controls, patients with MDD had significantly greater levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, TNF-α, and IFN-γ (P 0.05). Conclusions These findings present compelling evidence, potentially for the first time, indicating that duloxetine treatment may effectively reduce the serum concentrations of IL-8, IL-12, and IFN-γ in individuals diagnosed with MDD. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear and warrant further investigation.

Background The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is regarded as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease consequences and a reliable surrogate measure of insulin resistance (IR). However, the correlation analysis between triglyceride glucose index and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in patients with essential hypertension remains unknown. Methods A single-center, retrospective study was conducted with patients diagnosed with essential hypertension at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, from December 2018 to September 2020. Participants were selected based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, with their clinical data and laboratory tests collected. The study employed Spearman’s correlation analysis, logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline plots, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to investigate the relationships between the TyG index and HFpEF. Results Out of 1,602 enrolled hypertensive patients, 992 were included in the analysis after applying exclusion criteria. Patients were categorized into tertiles based on the TyG index, which showed that patients in the highest tertile had characteristics associated with a higher risk of HFpEF, including age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and left ventricular mass index (LVMI). A significant, independent association between the TyG index and HFpEF was confirmed, with an odds ratio (OR) of 5.127 (95% CI [3.894–6.856]). Furthermore, an S-shaped nonlinear relationship was observed between the TyG index and the incidence of HFpEF (nonlinear p < 0.001). TyG index (AUC: 0.824, 95% CI [0.795–0.854]), NT-proBNP (AUC: 0.840, 95% CI [0.816–0.864]), and LVMI (AUC: 0.847, 95% CI [0.820–0.875]) showed good predictive ability for HFpEF. In addition, the TyG+LVMI combination demonstrated the strongest predictive ability (AUC: 0.907, 95% CI [0.887–0.927]). Conclusion The study underscores a significant association between IR, as indicated by the TyG index, and the development of HFpEF in hypertensive patients. It highlights the critical role of metabolic dysfunction in the pathophysiology of HFpEF, advocating for a broader perspective on cardiovascular risk management.

High-resolution .sup.1H nuclear magnetic resonance (.sup.1H NMR) was advanced to determine both epoxy value and iodine value (IV) of vegetable oils that occur during their epoxidation. For calibration, rather than using a series of diluted stock samples, epoxidized soybean oils with a range of IV and epoxy value synthesized using entrapped peroxophosphotungstate as the catalyst under different reaction conditions were used. During the epoxidation reaction, IV and epoxy value were tracked with respect to time using .sup.1H NMR and conventional volumetric methods. The integrated peak area of the olefinic hydrogens (5.3-5.5 ppm) was used to calculate the absolute number of double-bonded protons. By comparison of IV obtained by .sup.1H NMR and the traditional Wijs-cyclohexane methods, the correlation coefficient was R.sup.2 = 0.9997 for the regression equation y = 1.1314x + 1.0035, where x was the result given by .sup.1H NMR. The average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups located at chemical shifts of 2.9 ppm (monoepoxide) and 3.1 ppm (diepoxide) were used to determine the epoxy value. The quantification of the number of epoxides was carried out by .sup.1H NMR and the values obtained were correlated with epoxide content determined by the hydrochloric acid/acetone method. As a consequence, the correlation coefficient was R.sup.2 = 0.9991 for the regression equation y = 0.0052x + 1.7258, where x was the average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups by .sup.1H NMR. The novelty of our study lies in the simultaneous correlation between IV and epoxy value obtained from conventional titrations, the integrated peak area related to olefinic protons, and the average integrated peak area located at the hydrogen of epoxide group, calculated using .sup.1H NMR. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been widely utilised in tunnel construction due to their high efficiency and reliability. Accurately predicting TBM performance can improve project time management, cost control, and risk management. This study aims to use deep learning to develop real-time models for predicting the penetration rate (PR). The models are built using data from the Changsha metro project, and their performances are evaluated using unseen data from the Zhengzhou Metro project. In one-step forecast, the predicted penetration rate follows the trend of the measured penetration rate in both training and testing. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model is compared with the recurrent neural network (RNN) model. The results show that univariate models, which only consider historical penetration rate itself, perform better than multivariate models that take into account multiple geological and operational parameters (GEO and OP). Next, an RNN variant combining time series of penetration rate with the last-step geological and operational parameters is developed, and it performs better than other models. A sensitivity analysis shows that the penetration rate is the most important parameter, while other parameters have a smaller impact on time series forecasting. It is also found that smoothed data are easier to predict with high accuracy. Nevertheless, over-simplified data can lose real characteristics in time series. In conclusion, the RNN variant can accurately predict the next-step penetration rate, and data smoothing is crucial in time series forecasting. This study provides practical guidance for TBM performance forecasting in practical engineering.

Background: Tumors, as intricate ecosystems, comprise oncocytes and the highly dynamic tumor stroma. Tumor stroma, representing the non-cancerous and non-cellular composition of the tumor microenvironment (TME), plays a crucial role in oncogenesis and progression, through its interactions with biological, chemical, and mechanical signals. This review aims to analyze the challenges of stroma mimicry models, and highlight advanced personalized co-culture approaches for recapitulating tumor stroma using patient-derived tumor organoids (PDTOs). Methods: This review synthesizes findings from recent studies on tumor stroma composition, stromal remodeling, and the spatiotemporal heterogeneities of the TME. It explores popular stroma-related models, co-culture systems integrating PDTOs with stromal elements, and advanced techniques to improve stroma mimicry. Results: Stroma remodeling, driven by stromal cells, highlights the dynamism and heterogeneity of the TME. PDTOs, derived from tumor tissues or cancer-specific stem cells, accurately mimic the tissue-specific and genetic features of primary tumors, making them valuable for drug screening. Co-culture models combining PDTOs with stromal elements effectively recreate the dynamic TME, showing promise in personalized anti-cancer therapy. Advanced co-culture techniques and flexible combinations enhance the precision of tumor-stroma recapitulation. Conclusions: PDTO-based co-culture systems offer a promising platform for stroma mimicry and personalized anti-cancer therapy development. This review underscores the importance of refining these models to advance precision medicine and improve therapeutic outcomes.

Identification of protein interactors is fundamental to understanding their functions. Here, we describe a modified protocol for tandem affinity purification coupled with mass spectrometry (TAP/MS), which includes two-step purification. We detail the S-, 2×FLAG-, and Streptavidin-Binding Peptide (SBP)- tandem tags (SFB-tag) system for protein purification. This protocol can be used to identify protein interactors and establish a high-confidence protein-protein interaction network based on computational models. This is particularly useful for identifying bona fide interacting proteins for subsequent functional studies. Wildlife conservation and management in human-dominated landscapes are major concerns for wildlife ecologists and managers. The dynamics of human disturbance, combined with seasonal limitations in the availability of nutritious foods, may restrict wildlife population growth and recovery. However, understanding how large mammal species adjust their population distribution in forest habitats with seasonal changes in food and disturbances requires a deeper and more extensive analysis. In this study, we found that three ungulate species, roe deer (Capreolus pygargus), sika deer (Cervus nippon), and wild boar (Sus scrofa), employ robust, conservative, and flexible distribution strategies, respectively, to adapt to the effects of seasonal changes and human disturbances. Moreover, croplands, villages, and grazing have some negative effects on the distribution of roe deer and sika deer, while wild boar can be highly abundant near human land use. Additionally, roe deer, sika deer, and wild boar are also affected by the abundance of shrub species they consume. During the cold season, the populations of the Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and Amur leopard (P. pardus orientalis) were primarily located near roads and dense forests, respectively. In the warm season, the distribution of both big cats was influenced by prey abundance, and Amur tigers also avoided grazing livestock. Nevertheless, the negative effects of human land use on Amur tigers and wild boars increased during the warm season, which was attributed to more frequent human activities during that time. Consequently, it is crucial to implement season-specific habitat management, particularly by regulating human disturbances during the warm season, in order to promote the recovery and expansion of populations of big cats and ungulates.

Porcine circovirus types 2 (PCV2) and 3 (PCV3) are the two most prevalent porcine circoviruses in China, all of which can infect swine herds and cause serious diseases. To detect coinfection with PCV2 and PCV3, primers and probes for duplex PCV2 and PCV3 real-time PCR were designed to target their cap genes based on the constructed plasmids pUC57-PCV2 and pUC57-PCV3. The established duplex PCV2 and PCV3 real-time PCRs were specific to PCV2 and PCV3 and showed no cross-reactions with other porcine viral pathogens. The limit of detection was 5 and 50 copies for the PCV2 and PCV3 plasmids, respectively. The intra- and interassay repeatability had coefficients of variation below 3 %. The established methods were used to analyze clinical samples from Liaoning and Jilin provinces of China. The coinfection rates of PCV2 and PCV3 in pigs extensively fed in Liaoning and Jilin, large-scale farmed pigs in Liaoning and large-scale farmed pigs in Jilin were 15.0 % (6/40), 36.7 % (11/30) and 35.4 % (62/175), respectively. This study established a useful duplex PCV2 and PCV3 real-time PCR method that can be used for the detection of PCV2 and PCV3 in local clinical samples.

Abstract Objective It is known that cytokines play a role in both depression and anxiety. This study aimed to compare the levels of multiple cytokines in patients with first-episode drug-naive major depressive disorder (MDD) with or without anxiety and analyze the correlation between the level of depression or anxiety and the serum cytokine levels. Methods The study involved 55 patients with first-episode drug-naive MDD. To assess anxiety symptoms, the 14-item HAMA was used. MDD patients were divided into two groups: 23 MDD patients without anxiety and 32 MDD patients with anxiety. The measurement of 37 cytokines was conducted. Serum cytokine levels between patients with MDD without anxiety and anxiety were compared. In multiple linear regression models, the relationship between the group and abnormal cytokines was explored. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to estimate diagnostic performance of serum cytokines in discriminating MDD patients with anxiety from MDD patients without anxiety. A correlation was evaluated between the scores of HAMD or HAMA and the serum cytokine levels. Results In MDD patients with anxiety, IL-17 C and CCL17 levels were significantly lower than in MDD patients without anxiety (all P 0.05). The results of multiple linear regression models revealed that after controlling for other independent variables, group was not a significant independent predictor of serum IL-17 C or CCL17 (all P > 0.05). The AUC values of IL-17 C and CCL17 were 0.643 and 0.637, respectively, in discriminating MDD patients with anxiety from MDD patients without anxiety. The results of partial correlation analyses showed the scores of HAMD were negatively correlated with the IL-17 C (r = -0.314, P = 0.021) levels with sex as a covariate. Conclusions The findings suggest that there is a potential absence of disparity in the levels of circulating cytokines among individuals diagnosed with first-episode drug-naïve MDD, regardless of the presence or absence of comorbid anxiety.

Abstract Background One-stage jaw reconstruction with fibular flap and prosthetic rehabilitation restores bony and dental continuity simultaneously. It was also called as “jaw-in-a-day (JIAD)” technique. However, bone volume and height of fibular flap may be insufficient for dental implant insertion. The provision of a considerable amount of bone makes an iliac flap the ideal choice in these cases. We present the first case report to document the use of one-stage jaw reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation with the iliac flap. Case presentation We modified the conventional JIAD workflow to make it suitable for iliac flap. Two cases were presented who both underwent segmental mandibulectomy for ameloblastoma. Virtual surgical planning was performed in all cases. The iliac crest was positioned upward to provide cortical bone for achieving primary stability of dental implants. Similar to the “all-on-4” procedure, the iliac bone was placed 12 to 15 mm below the occlusal plane to create adequate space for the implant-retained prosthesis. Immediate implant-based dental rehabilitation was performed at same stage. The surgery was successful in all cases without any short-term complications. In the first postoperative week, patients were given a liquid diet through a nasal feeding tube. The liquid diet is advised until 1 month after the surgery. Thereafter, a soft diet is recommended. Patients were advised to resume routine mastication and normal diet 3 months after the surgery. Peri-implantitis occurred in one patient, and additional gingival graft was required. Postoperative function and esthetics were satisfactory at the last follow-up visit. Conclusions One-stage jaw reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation with the iliac flap are safe and useful for restoring postoperative function and esthetics. It should be used in more cases with a longer follow-up in further studies.
