Light gauge steel stud walls have been widely used in buildings as load-bearing members. But if used as non-load-bearing walls, more rows of perforations can be placed on stud webs and then the thermal bridge effect can be reduced. Experiments on six non-load-bearing light gauge slotted steel stud walls were conducted using a calibrated hot box. The temperatures of the steel studs and gypsum plasterboard were monitored for subsequent analysis of thermal bridging. The effects of parameters (number of rows of perforations, stud web height, and the ratio of window area to wall area) on the insulating capacity of the wall were identified and analyzed. Thermal transmittance decreases by 18.5% and 29.6% for specimens with 3 and 7 rows of perforations in comparison with the specimen without perforations, while it decreases by 29.8% and 42.7% respectively for 150 mm and 200 mm thick walls compared with that of the 100 mm thick wall. However, thermal transmittance increases obviously for the wall with a window opening relative to the wall without a window opening, reaching 14.7% in this test since more studs are placed around the window opening. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the wall was developed and validated against experimental results, and then was used for parametric studies. A general method of calculating the thermal transmittance of the light gauge slotted steel stud wall was suggested based on the experiment and the FE model results, which can consider influences of wall thickness, web perforations, window openings, and thermal properties of materials.

Abstract Introduction There is a high morbidity and mortality rate in mechanical trauma (MT)-induced hepatic injury. Currently, the molecular mechanisms underlying liver MT are largely unclear. Exploring the underlying mechanisms and developing safe and effective medicines to alleviate MT-induced hepatic injury is an urgent requirement. The aim of this study was to reveal the role of mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAMs) in post-traumatic liver injury, and ascertain whether melatonin protects against MT-induced hepatic injury by regulating MAMs. Methods Hepatic mechanical injury was established in Sprague–Dawley rats and primary hepatocytes. A variety of experimental methods were employed to assess the effects of melatonin on hepatic injury, apoptosis, MAMs formation, mitochondrial function and signaling pathways. Results Significant increase of IP3R1 expression and MAMs formation were observed in MT-induced hepatic injury. Melatonin treatment at the dose of 30 mg/kg inhibited IP3R1-mediated MAMs and attenuated MT-induced liver injury in vivo. In vitro, primary hepatocytes cultured in 20% trauma serum (TS) for 12 h showed upregulated IP3R1 expression, increased MAMs formation and cell injury, which were suppressed by melatonin (100 μmol/L) treatment. Consequently, melatonin suppressed mitochondrial calcium overload, increased mitochondrial membrane potential and improved mitochondrial function under traumatic condition. Melatonin’s inhibitory effects on MAMs formation and mitochondrial calcium overload were blunted when IP3R1 was overexpressed. Mechanistically, melatonin bound to its receptor (MR) and increased the expression of phosphorylated ERK1/2, which interacted with FoxO1 and inhibited the activation of FoxO1 that bound to the IP3R1 promoter to inhibit MAMs formation. Conclusion Melatonin prevents the formation of MAMs via the MR-ERK1/2-FoxO1-IP3R1 pathway, thereby alleviating the development of MT-induced liver injury. Melatonin-modulated MAMs may be a promising therapeutic therapy for traumatic hepatic injury. Graphical Abstract

We hypothesized that the respiratory exercises have uniform effects on ventilation in healthy subjects but the effects varied in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this study, a total of 30 healthy volunteers and 9 patients with COPD were included. Data were recorded continuously during (1) diaphragmatic breathing; (2) pursed lip breathing with full inhalation; (3) pursed lip combining diaphragmatic breathing. The sequence of the three breathing exercises was randomized using machine generated random permutation. Spatial and temporal ventilation distributions were evaluated with electrical impedance tomography. The interaction between an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) and an aqueous solution has great application prospects in biomedicine and many other fields. Reactive species adjacent to a water surface is critical to the activation of APPJ-treated water, which is affected by both the water evaporation and the admixture of ambient air. In this paper, taking He APPJ as an example, a two-dimensional (2D) cylindrically symmetric fluid model is developed to obtain the spatial distributions of gas components before discharging, and a series of global models are developed for the discharge in the boundary gas layer adjacent to the water surface. The interfacial distributions of reactive species and their fluxes onto the water surface are quantified. It is found that the electron density is 1016–1017 m−3 and it shows an annular distribution in the boundary gas layer. The density distributions of most reactive species there reveal ring-like shapes as well. The dominant cation and anion in such a boundary layer are H3O+ and OH−, respectively. The most abundant metastable is O2(a1Δ), the most abundant reactive oxygen species are H2O2 and OH, and the most abundant reactive nitrogen species are NO and HNO2. The species of H2O2, OH, HO2, and HNO2 are reportedly to have significant biological effects, and in our simulation, their fluxes onto the water surface are remarkable, higher than 1017 m−2 s−1. In addition, the effects of radial gas velocity and water evaporation on the particle flux distributions are also revealed.

Abstract The heart primarily derives its energy through lipid oxidation. In cardiomyocytes, lipids are stored in lipid droplets (LDs) and are utilized in mitochondria, although the structural and functional connections between these two organelles remain largely unknown. In this study, visible evidence have presented indicating that a complex is formed at the mitochondria‐LD membrane contact (MLC) site, involving mitochondrion‐localized Mfn2 and LD‐localized Hsc70. This complex serves to tether mitochondria to LDs, facilitating the transfer of fatty acids (FAs) from LDs to mitochondria for β‐oxidation. Reduction of Mfn2 induced by lipid overload inhibits MLC, hinders FA transfer, and results in lipid accumulation. Restoring Mfn2 reinstates MLC, alleviating myocardial lipotoxicity under lipid overload conditions both in‐vivo and in‐vitro. Additionally, prolonged lipid overload induces Mfn2 degradation through the ubiquitin‐proteasome pathway, following Mfn2 acetylation at the K243 site. This leads to the transition from adaptive lipid utilization to maladaptive lipotoxicity. The experimental findings are supported by clinical data from patients with obesity and age‐matched non‐obese individuals. These translational results make a significant contribution to the molecular understanding of MLC in the heart, and offer new insights into its role in myocardial lipotoxicity.

Abstract Incorporating social factors into disease prevention and control efforts is an important undertaking of behavioral epidemiology. The interplay between disease transmission and human health behaviors, such as vaccine uptake, results in complex dynamics of biological and social contagions. Maximizing intervention adoptions via network-based targeting algorithms by harnessing the power of social contagion for behavior and attitude changes largely remains a challenge. Here we address this issue by considering a multiplex network setting. Individuals are situated on two layers of networks: the disease transmission network layer and the peer influence network layer. The disease spreads through direct close contacts while vaccine views and uptake behaviors spread interpersonally within a potentially virtual network. The results of our comprehensive simulations show that network-based targeting with pro-vaccine supporters as initial seeds significantly influences vaccine adoption rates and reduces the extent of an epidemic outbreak. Network targeting interventions are much more effective by selecting individuals with a central position in the opinion network as compared to those grouped in a community or connected professionally. Our findings provide insight into network-based interventions to increase vaccine confidence and demand during an ongoing epidemic.

BackgroundIn recent years, we have observed the pivotal role of immunotherapy in improving survival for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the effectiveness of immunotherapy in the perioperative (neoadjuvant + adjuvant) treatment of resectable NSCLC remains uncertain. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of its antitumor efficacy and adverse effects (AEs) by pooling data from the KEYNOTE-671, NADIM II, and AEGEAN clinical trials.MethodsFor eligible studies, we searched seven databases. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) pertaining to the comparative analysis of combination neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative immunotherapy (PIO) versus perioperative placebo (PP) were included. Primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS). Secondary endpoints encompassed drug responses, AEs, and surgical outcomes.ResultsThree RCTs (KEYNOTE-671, NADIM II, and AEGEAN) were included in the final analysis. PIO group (neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative immunotherapy) exhibited superior efficacy in OS (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.63 [0.49-0.81]), EFS (HR: 0.61 [0.52, 0.72]), objective response rate (risk ratio [RR]: 2.21 [1.91, 2.54]), pathological complete response (RR: 4.36 [3.04, 6.25]), major pathological response (RR: 2.79 [2.25, 3.46]), R0 resection rate (RR: 1.13 [1.00, 1.26]) and rate of adjuvant treatment (RR: 1.08 [1.01, 1.15]) compared with PP group (neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative placebo). In the subgroup analysis, EFS tended to favor the PIO group in almost all subgroups. BMI (>25), T stage (IV), N stage (N1-N2) and pathological response (with pathological complete response) were favorable factors in the PIO group. In the safety assessment, the PIO group exhibited higher rates of serious AEs (28.96% vs. 23.51%) and AEs leading to treatment discontinuation (12.84% vs. 5.81%). Meanwhile, although total adverse events, grade 3-5 adverse events, and fatal adverse events tended to favor the PP group, the differences were not statistically significant.ConclusionPIO appears to be superior to PP for resectable stage II-III NSCLC, demonstrating enhanced survival and pathological responses. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a harmful fungal toxin, and its contamination in wheat flour poses a food safety concern globally. This study proposes the combination of fluorescence hyperspectral imaging (FHSI) and qualitative discrimination methods for the detection of excessive DON content in wheat flour. Wheat flour samples were prepared with varying DON concentrations through the addition of trace amounts of DON using the wet mixing method for fluorescence hyperspectral image collection. SG smoothing and normalization algorithms were applied for original spectra preprocessing. Feature band selection was carried out by applying the successive projection algorithm (SPA), uninformative variable elimination (UVE), competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), and the random frog algorithm on the fluorescence spectrum. Random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) classification models were utilized to identify wheat flour samples with DON concentrations higher than 1 mg/kg. The results indicate that the SG–CARS–RF and SG–CARS–SVM models showed better performance than other models, achieving the highest recall rate of 98.95% and the highest accuracy of 97.78%, respectively. Additionally, the ROC curves demonstrated higher robustness on the RF algorithm. Deep learning algorithms were also applied to identify the samples that exceeded safety standards, and the convolutional neural network (CNN) model achieved a recognition accuracy rate of 97.78% for the test set. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the feasibility and potential of the FHSI technique in detecting DON infection in wheat flour.

Microvascular obstruction (MVO) of coronary arteries promotes an increase in mortality and major adverse cardiac events in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Intramyocardial hemorrhage (IMH) is observed in 41–50% of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and PCI. The occurrence of IMH is accompanied by inflammation. There is evidence that microthrombi are not involved in the development of MVO. The appearance of MVO is associated with infarct size, the duration of ischemia of the heart, and myocardial edema. However, there is no conclusive evidence that myocardial edema plays an important role in the development of MVO. There is evidence that platelets, inflammation, Ca2+overload, neuropeptide Y, and endothelin-1 could be involved in the pathogenesis of MVO. The role of endothelial cell damage in MVO formation remains unclear in patients with AMI and PCI. It is unclear whether nitric oxide production is reduced in patients with MVO. Only indirect evidence on the involvement of inflammation in the development of MVO has been obtained. The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathogenesis of MVO is not studied. The role of necroptosis and pyroptosis in the pathogenesis of MVO in patients with AMI and PCI is also not studied. The significance of the balance of thromboxane A2, vasopressin, angiotensin II, and prostacyclin in the formation of MVO is currently unknown. Conclusive evidence regarding the role of coronary artery spasm in the development of MVhasn’t been established. Correlation analysis of the neuropeptide Y, endothelin-1 levels and the MVO size in patients with AMI and PCI has not previously been performed. It is unclear whether epinephrine aggravates reperfusion necrosis of cardiomyocytes. Dual antiplatelet therapy improves the efficacy of PCI in prevention of MVO. It is unknown whether epinephrine or L-type Ca2+ channel blockers result in the long-term improvement of coronary blood flow in patients with MVO.

Introduction: The anti-cancer medication doxorubicin (Dox) is largely restricted in clinical usage due to its significant cardiotoxicity. The only medication approved by the FDA for Dox-induced cardiotoxicity is dexrazoxane, while it may reduce the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy and is restricted for use. There is an urgent need for the development of safe and effective medicines to alleviate Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether Paeonol (Pae) has the ability to protect against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity and if so, what are the underlying mechanisms involved. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats and primary cardiomyocytes were used to create Dox-induced cardiotoxicity models. Pae's effects on myocardial damage, mitochondrial function, mitochondrial dynamics and signaling pathways were studied using a range of experimental methods. Results: Pae enhanced Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion, restored mitochondrial function and cardiac performance both in vivo and in vitro under the Dox conditions. The protective properties of Pae were blunted when Mfn2 was knocked down or knocked out in Dox-induced cardiomyocytes and hearts respectively. Mechanistically, Pae promoted Mfn2-mediated mitochondria fusion by activating the transcription factor Stat3, which bound to the Mfn2 promoter in a direct manner and up-regulated its transcriptional expression. Furthermore, molecular docking, surface plasmon resonance and co-immunoprecipitation studies showed that Pae’s direct target was PKCε, which interacted with Stat3 and enabled its phosphorylation and activation. Pae-induced Stat3 phosphorylation and Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion were inhibited when PKCε was knocked down. Furthermore, Pae did not interfere with Dox's antitumor efficacy in several tumor cells. Conclusion: Pae protects the heart against Dox-induced damage by stimulating mitochondrial fusion via the PKCε-Stat3-Mfn2 pathway, indicating that Pae might be a promising therapeutic therapy for Dox-induced cardiotoxicity while maintaining Dox's anticancer activity.

Population heterogeneity, especially in individuals' contact networks, plays an important role in transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. For vaccine-preventable diseases, outstanding issues like vaccine hesitancy and availability of vaccines further lead to nonuniform coverage among groups, not to mention the efficacy of vaccines and the mixing pattern varying from one group to another. As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic transitions to endemicity, it is of interest and significance to understand the impact of aforementioned population heterogeneity on the emergence and persistence of epidemics. Here we analyze epidemic thresholds and characterize bifurcation dynamics by accounting for heterogeneity caused by group-dependent characteristics, including vaccination rate and efficacy as well as disease transmissibility. Our analysis shows that increases in the difference in vaccination coverage among groups can render multiple equilibria of disease burden to exist even if the overall basic reproductive ratio is below one (also known as backward bifurcation). The presence of other heterogeneity factors such as differences in vaccine efficacy, transmission, mixing pattern, and group size can each exhibit subtle impacts on bifurcation. We find that heterogeneity in vaccine efficacy can undermine the condition for backward bifurcations whereas homophily tends to aggravate disease endemicity. Our results have practical implications for improving public health efforts by addressing the role of population heterogeneity in the spread and control of diseases.

Due to their excellent properties and unique structures, transition metal sulfides play an important role in the development of efficient and stable photoelectric catalysts. In recent years, their potential applications have expanded from photoelectric catalysis to energy storage, especially as materials for key components of electrochemical energy storage. As a typical multifunctional metal sulfide catalyst, Co9S8 is highly attractive due to its high conductivity, better stability, suitable band structure, enhanced performance and wide applications. A large number of studies have shown that strategically modified Co9S8-based materials have greater advantages in various applications compared with pure Co9S8. Therefore, this review will evaluate the physicochemical properties and the preparation of different dimensions of Co9S8-based materials, and the influence of different structures on the photoelectrochemical energy of materials will be described. In addition, the research progress regarding the evolution of hydrogen photocatalytic, electrocatalytic water splitting and various electrochemical energy storage materials will be emphasized. Finally, the challenges faced by Co9S8-based materials and the research directions for their future applications will be discussed.

Evolutionary game dynamics on networks typically consider the competition among simple strategies such as cooperation and defection in the Prisoner’s Dilemma and summarize the effect of population structure as network reciprocity. However, it remains largely unknown regarding the evolutionary dynamics involving multiple powerful strategies typically considered in repeated games, such as the zero-determinant (ZD) strategies that are able to enforce a linear payoff relationship between them and their co-players. Here, we consider the evolutionary dynamics of always cooperate (AllC), extortionate ZD (extortioners), and unbending players in lattice populations based on the commonly used death-birth updating. Out of the class of unbending strategies that can foster reciprocal cooperation and fairness among extortionate players, we consider a particular candidate, pre-optimized through the machine-learning method of particle swarm optimization (PSO), called PSO Gambler. We derive analytical results under weak selection and rare mutations, including pairwise fixation probabilities and long-term frequencies of strategies. In the absence of the third unbending type, extortioners can achieve a half-half split in equilibrium with unconditional cooperators for sufficiently large extortion factors. However, the presence of unbending players fundamentally changes the dynamics and tilts the system to favor unbending cooperation. Most surprisingly, extortioners cannot dominate at all regardless of how large their extortion factor is, and the long-term frequency of unbending players is maintained almost as a constant. Our analytical method is applicable to studying the evolutionary dynamics of multiple strategies in structured populations. Our work provides insights into the interplay between network reciprocity and direct reciprocity, revealing the role of unbending strategies in enforcing fairness and suppressing extortion.

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) belongs to the family of natriuretic peptides, which are responsible for a wide range of actions. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is often associated with increased BNP levels. This present research intends to explore the role of BNP in the development of DCM and the underlying mechanisms. Diabetes was induced in mice using streptozotocin (STZ). Primary neonatal cardiomyocytes were treated with high glucose. It was found that the levels of plasma BNP started to increase at 8 weeks after diabetes, which preceded the development of DCM. Addition of exogenous BNP promoted Opa1-mediated mitochondrial fusion, inhibited mitochondrial oxidative stress, preserved mitochondrial respiratory capacity and prevented the development of DCM, while knockdown of endogenous BNP exacerbated mitochondrial dysfunction and accelerated DCM. Opa1 knockdown attenuated the aforementioned protective action of BNP both in vivo and in vitro. BNP-induced mitochondrial fusion requires the activation of STAT3, which facilitated Opa1 transcription by binding to its promoter regions. PKG, a crucial signaling biomolecule in the BNP signaling pathway, interacted with STAT3 and induced its activation. Knockdown of NPRA (the receptor of BNP) or PKG blunted the promoting effect of BNP on STAT3 phosphorylation and Opa1-mediated mitochondrial fusion. The results of this study demonstrate for the first time that there is a rise in BNP during the early stages of DCM as a compensatory protection mechanism. BNP is a novel mitochondrial fusion activator in protecting against hyperglycemia-induced mitochondrial oxidative injury and DCM through the activation of NPRA-PKG-STAT3-Opa1 signaling pathway.

Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the influence of gravity on regional ventilation measured by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with the standard electrode belt position at the 5th intercostal space during tilting from supine to sitting positions. Methods: A total of 30 healthy volunteers were examined prospectively in supine position during quiet tidal breathing. Subsequently, the bed was tilted so that the upper body of the subjects achieved 30, 60 and 90° every 3 min. Regional ventilation distribution and end-expiratory lung impedance (EELI) were monitored with EIT throughout the whole experiment. Absolute tidal volumes were measured with spirometry and the volume-impedance ratio was calculated for each position. Results: The volume-impedance ratio did not differ statistically between the studied body positions but 11 subjects exhibited a large change in ratio at one of the positions (outside 99.3% coverage). In general, ventilation distribution became more heterogeneous and moved towards dorsal regions as the upper body was tilted to 90-degree position. EELI increased and tidal volume decreased. The lung regions identified at various positions differed significantly. Conclusion: Gravity has non-negligible influence on EIT data, as the upper body tilted from supine to sitting positions. The standard electrode belt position might be reconsidered if ventilation distribution is to be compared between supine and sitting positions.

Due to the inherent complex tensions in General Purpose Technology (GPT) in emerging industries, namely those between “generality” and “emergance,” firms in emerging industries often face the dilemma of choosing distant search or local search in GPT innovation. The core research question of this paper is: How do the different knowledge search strategies affect GPT innovation in emerging industries? And do industry alliances play a moderating role between them? Based on a knowledge-based view, this paper takes 380 firms in emerging industries as total samples and 196 firms in emerging industries as subsamples to examine the impact of distant, local, and balanced knowledge search on the GPT innovation in emerging industries, finding: (1) Different knowledge search strategies have differential effects on the GPT innovation in emerging industries. (2) The heterogeneity of industry alliances positively moderates the relationship between distant search, balanced search, and GPT innovation in emerging industries, and weakens the relationship between local search and GPT innovation in emerging industries. This paper clarifies the relationship between knowledge search strategies and GPT innovation in emerging industries, and also provides management inspiration for the emergence and improvement of GPT innovation.

Shannon entropy plays an important role in the field of information theory, and various graph entropies, including the chromatic entropy, have been proposed by researchers based on Shannon entropy with different graph variables. The applications of the graph entropies are found in numerous areas such as physical chemistry, medicine, and biology. The present research aims to study the chromatic entropy based on the vertex strong coloring of a linear p-uniform supertree. The maximal and minimal values of the p-uniform supertree are determined. Moreover, in order to investigate the generalization of dendrimers, a new class of p-uniform supertrees called hyper-dendrimers is proposed. In particular, the extremal values of chromatic entropy found in the research for supertrees are applied to explore the behavior of the hyper-dendrimers.

In order to enhance the mitigation of crack occurrence and propagation within basement concrete structures, this research endeavors to propose an optimization methodology grounded in the Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask-RCNN) and an analysis of temperature effects. Initially, the Mask-RCNN algorithm is employed to perform image segmentation of the basement concrete structure, facilitating the precise identification of crack locations and shapes within the structure. Subsequently, the finite element analysis method is harnessed to simulate the structural stress and deformation in response to temperature variations. An optimization algorithm is introduced to adjust geometric parameters and material properties using insights from the temperature effect analysis. This algorithm aims to minimize stress concentration and deformation within the structure, thus diminishing the incidence and proliferation of cracks. In order to assess the efficacy of the optimization approach, an authentic basement concrete structure is selected for scrutiny, and the structure is monitored in real-time through the installation of strain gauges and monitoring equipment. These instruments track structural stress and deformation under diverse temperature conditions, and the evolution of cracks is meticulously documented. The outcomes demonstrate that by adjusting the structural geometric parameters and material properties, the crack density experiences a notable reduction of 60.22%. Moreover, the average crack length and width witness reductions of 40.24% and 35.43%, respectively, thereby corroborating the efficacy of the optimization method. Furthermore, an assessment of stress concentration and deformation within the structure is conducted. Through the optimization process, the maximum stress concentration in the structure diminishes by 25.22%, while the maximum deformation is curtailed by 30.32%. These results signify a substantial enhancement in structural stability. It is evident that the optimization algorithm exhibits robustness and stability in the context of crack control, consistently delivering favorable outcomes across diverse parameter configurations.

Braces with intentional eccentricity (BIE) are recently proposed to improve the seismic behaviour of conventional buckling braces (CBBs) by inserting intentional eccentricity along the brace length. Due to this eccentricity and the resultant bending moment, the BIE bends uniformly from small storey drifts and moves smoothly into the postbuckling behaviour under compression and sustains trilinear behaviour under tension. This behaviour delays the appearance of midlength local buckling which causes unstable energy dissipation. BIEs have a desirable postyielding stiffness which results in stable energy dissipation during cyclic loading and are capable of dissipating energy during low-intensity earthquakes. The seismic behaviour of structures with BIEs for use in buildings has not yet been investigated, specifically in tall buildings. Therefore, this study concentrates on investigating the seismic behaviour of tall buildings equipped with BIEs that uses a 3-dimensional (3D) finite element model in ETABS. In the first step, a 20-storey structure is designed using both eccentric brace frame (EBF) and BIE system and their seismic performance under the TABAS earthquake record is compared. In the second step, the seismic performance of a 25-storey irregular structure is assessed to evaluate the efficiency of the BIE system in irregular structures. Results show the desirable performance and energy dissipation capacity of the BIE system but it also shows large out-of-plane deformation in some cases.

A cerebral contrast-enhanced electrical impedance tomography perfusion method is developed for acute ischemic stroke during intravenous thrombolytic therapy. Several clinical contrast agents with stable impedance characteristics and high-conductivity contrast were screened experimentally as electrical impedance contrast agent candidates. Background: Some electrical impedance tomography (EIT) devices equip reference electrodes. In practice, it is not uncommon to observe high contact impedance for the reference electrode. The influence of bad contact reference electrode on data quality is unknown. The study aimed to investigate the influence of reference electrode on EIT image reconstruction. Methods: Thirty lung healthy volunteers were prospectively examined with EIT. The subjects were spontaneously breathing in supine position. Three scenarios were constructed: 1. Normal measurement; 2. Reference electrode disconnected without recalibration; 3. Reference electrode disconnected, and the measurement restarted after recalibration of the system. EIT-based parameters measuring spatial and temporal ventilation distributions were calculated and compared. A so-call deviation score was calculated to assess the differences in EIT parameters between scenarios 2 and 1, between 3 and 1. Results: The absolute differences for all parameters were significantly higher than zero (p < 0.01 for all parameters and scenarios). Deviation score for scenario 2 was 4.5 ± 3.5. Four subjects had a deviation score of 0 in scenario 2 and five subjects had a score of 1. The deviation in scenario 3 was higher (6.1 ± 3.1). No subjects had a score of 0 and only two subjects had a score of 1. Conclusions: For EIT systems that equips with reference electrode, it is important to ensure the proper contact and functionality of the reference electrode. The EIT data quality would remain unchanged in only a small portion of subjects.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been widely used in biomedical research because of its advantages of real-time imaging and nature of being non-invasive and radiation-free. Additionally, it can reconstruct the distribution or changes in electrical properties in the sensing area. Recently, with the significant advancements in the use of deep learning in intelligent medical imaging, EIT image reconstruction based on deep learning has received considerable attention. This study introduces the basic principles of EIT and summarizes the application progress of deep learning in EIT image reconstruction with regards to three aspects: a single network reconstruction, deep learning combined with traditional algorithm reconstruction, and multiple network hybrid reconstruction. In future, optimizing the datasets may be the main challenge in applying deep learning for EIT image reconstruction. Adopting a better network structure, focusing on the joint reconstruction of EIT and traditional algorithms, and using multimodal deep learning-based EIT may be the solution to existing problems. In general, deep learning offers a fresh approach for improving the performance of EIT image reconstruction and could be the foundation for building an intelligent integrated EIT diagnostic system in the future.

Abstract The median voter theorem has long been the default model of voter behavior and candidate choice. While contemporary work on the distribution of political opinion has emphasized polarization and an increasing gap between the “left” and the “right” in democracies, the median voter theorem presents a model of anti-polarization: competing candidates move to the center of the ideological distribution to maximize vote share, regardless of the underlying ideological distribution of voters. These anti-polar results, however, largely depend on the “singled-peakedness” of voter preferences, an assumption that is rapidly losing relevance in the age of polarization. This article presents a model of voter choice that examines three potential mechanisms that can undermine this finding: a relative cost of voting that deters voters who are sufficiently indifferent to both candidates, ideologically motivated third-party alternatives that attract extreme voters, and a bimodal distribution of voter ideology. Under reasonable sets of conditions and empirically observed voter opinion distributions, these mechanisms can be sufficient to cause strategically minded candidates to fail to converge to the center, or to even become more polarized than their electorate.

Abstract The service life prediction of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in marine environment is essential in structural repair and health monitoring. In this paper, a numerical model for predicting the service life of reinforced concrete is first developed which considering the time-varying boundary of chloride concentration, critical chloride concentration and density of corrosion current. Based on the model, the effects of water–cement ratio, reinforcement diameter, concrete cover thickness and critical chloride ion concentration on the service life and deterioration duration of RC structures are investigated. The key factors affecting the service life of reinforced concrete structures are determined. More importantly, based on regression analysis, a new simplified empirical model for predicting the service life of RC structures is also developed. It provides a fast assessment tool for practical engineers. Both the numerical model and empirical model validated are suitable for practical engineering applications. The results show that with the increase of water–cement ratio, the service life of reinforced concrete structure decreases exponentially. And with the increase of the thickness of the concrete cover, the service life, deterioration duration, and safety reserve increase linearly. However, the influence of the diameter of the reinforcing bar on the service life can be ignored.

Nuclear energy with low carbon emission and high-energy density is considered as one of the most promising future energy sources for human beings. However, the use of nuclear energy will inevitably lead to the discharge of nuclear waste and the consumption of uranium resources. Therefore, the development of simple, efficient, and economical uranium extraction methods is of great significance for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and the restoration of the ecological environment. Photocatalytic U(VI) extraction technology as a simple, highly efficient, and low-cost strategy, received increasing attention from researchers. In this review, the development background of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction and several photocatalytic U(VI) reduction mechanisms are briefly described and the identification methods of uranium species after photocatalytic reduction are addressed. Subsequently, the modification strategies of several catalysts used for U(VI) extraction are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction are compared. Additionally, the research progress of photocatalytic technology for U(VI) extraction in actual uranium-containing wastewater and seawater are evaluated. Finally, the current challenges and the developments of photocatalytic U(VI) extraction technology in the future are prospected.

Abstract Objective To explore the effect of individualized blood pressure (BP)‐lowering treatment on the outcomes of elderly patients with severe intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Methods We performed an exploratory analysis of Controlling Hypertension After Severe Cerebrovascular Event (CHASE) trial, which was a multicenter, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Patients with severe ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke (defined as GCS ≤ 12 or NIHSS ≥ 11) were randomized into individualized versus standard BP‐lowering treatment in CHASE trial. In this exploratory analysis, patients with severe ICH were included. The primary outcome was the percentage of patients with 90‐day functional independence defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) ≤2. The ability to draw a structured surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field is an important step toward many new opportunities for a broad range of nanophotonic applications. Previous methods usually require complex experimental systems or holographic optimization algorithms that limit their practical applications. Here, we propose a simple method for flexible generation of structured SPP field with on-chip plasmonic metalenses. The metalens is composed of multiple plasmonic focusing nanostructures whose focal shape and position can be independently manipulated, and through their superposition, SPP fields with specially designed patterns are obtained. Based on this method, we demonstrate several structured SPP fields including S- and W-shaped SPP focal fields and tunable SPP bottle beams. This work could provide new ideas for on-chip manipulation of optical surface waves, and contribute to applications such as on-chip photonic information processing and integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract Chest electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising application which is used to monitor the ventilation and perfusion of the lung at the bedside dynamically. The aim of the study was to introduce the first Chinese made chest EIT device for ICU application (Pulmo EIT-100). The system design of the hardware and software was briefly introduced. The performance of the system was compared to PulmoVista 500 (Dräger Medical) in healthy volunteers. The EIT system Pulmo EIT-100 consists of impedance measurement module, power supply module, PC all-in-one machine, medical cart and accessories. The performance of the system current source and voltage measurement unit was tested. A total of 50 healthy lung volunteers were prospectively examined. Subjects were asked to perform repetitive slow vital capacity (SVC) maneuvers with a spirometer. EIT measurements were performed in the following sequence during each SVC with: (1) Pulmo EIT-100, (2) PulmonVista500, (3) Pulmo EIT-100 and (4) PulmonVista500. Linearity and regional ventilation distribution of the reconstructed images from two devices were compared. The output frequency stability of the current source was 2 ppm. The amplitude error within one hour was less than 0.32‰. The output impedance of the current source was about 50kΩ. The signal-to-noise ratio of each measurement channel was ≥ 60 dB. For fixed resistance measurements, the measured values drifted about 0.08% within one hour. For human subjects, the correlations between the spirometry volume and EIT impedance from two devices were both 0.99 ± 0.01. No statistical significances were found in the parameters investigated. The repeatability (variability) of measures from the same device was comparable. Our EIT device delivers reliable data and might be used for patient measurement in a clinical setting.

BackgroundReal-time detection of cerebral blood perfusion can prevent adverse reactions, such as cerebral infarction and neuronal apoptosis. Our previous clinical trial have shown that the infusion of therapeutic fluid can significantly change the impedance distribution in the brain. However, whether this alteration implicates the cerebral blood perfusion remains unclear. To explore the feasibility of monitoring cerebral blood perfusion, the present pilot study established a novel cerebral contrast-enhanced electrical impedance tomography (C-EIT) technique.Materials and methodsRabbits were randomly divided into two groups: the internal carotid artery non-occlusion (ICAN) and internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO) groups. Both of groups were injected with glucose, an electrical impedance-enhanced contrast agent, through the right internal carotid artery under EIT monitoring. The C-EIT reconstruction images of the rabbits brain were analyzed according to the collected raw data. The paired and independent t-tests were used to analyze the remodeled impedance values of the left and right cerebral hemispheres within and between studied groups, respectively. Moreover, pathological examinations of brain were performed immediately after C-EIT monitoring.ResultsAccording to the reconstructed images, the impedance value of the left cerebral hemisphere in the ICAN group did not change significantly, whereas the impedance value of the right cerebral hemisphere gradually increased, reaching a peak at approximately 10 s followed by gradually decreased. In the ICAO group, the impedance values of both cerebral hemispheres increased gradually and then began to decrease after reaching the peak value. According to the paired t-test, there was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the remodeling impedance values between the left and right hemispheres in the ICAN group, and there was also a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the ICAO group. According to the independent t-test, there was a significant difference (P < 0.001) of the left hemispheres between the ICAN and ICAO groups.ConclusionThe cerebral C-EIT proposed in this pilot study can reflect cerebral blood perfusion. This method has potential in various applications in the brain in the future, including disease progression monitoring, collateral circulation judgment, tumor-specific detection, and brain function research.

Summary: Background: Glibenclamide is a promising agent for treating brain oedema, but whether it improves clinical outcomes in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of glibenclamide treatment in patients with acute ICH. Methods: The Glibenclamide Advantage in Treating Oedema after Intracerebral Haemorrhage (GATE-ICH) study was a randomised controlled phase 2 clinical trial conducted in 26 hospitals in the northwest of China, recruiting patients with acute ganglia ICH no more than 72 h after onset from Dec 12, 2018 to Sept 23, 2020. During the first 7 days after enrolment, patients randomly assigned to the glibenclamide group were given glibenclamide orally (1.25 mg, 3/day) and standard care, while patients randomly assigned to the control group were given standard care alone. The computer-generated randomisation sequence was prepared by a statistician not involved in the rest of the study. Randomisation was computer-generated with a block size of four. The allocation results were unblinded to participants and investigators. The primary outcome was the percentage of patients with poor outcome (defined as modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score of ≥3) at day 90. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03741530). Findings: 220 participants were randomised and 200 participants (mean [standard deviation] age, 56 [11] years; sex, 128 [64.0%] male and 72 [36.0%] female) were included in the final analysis, with 101 participants randomly assigned to the control group and 99 to the glibenclamide group. The incidence of poor outcome at day 90 was 20/99 (20.2%) in glibenclamide group and 30/101 (29.7%) in control group (absolute difference, 9.5%; 95% confidence interval [CI], -3.2%−21.8%; P = 0.121) with adjusted odds ratios of 0.54 (95% CI, 0.24−1.20; P = 0.129). No significant difference was found in the overall rates of adverse events or serious adverse events between groups. However, the incidence of asymptomatic hypoglycaemia was significantly higher in glibenclamide group than control group (15/99 [15.2%] vs 0/101 [0.0%]; absolute difference, 15.2%; 95% CI, 7.5%−24.1%; P < 0.001). Interpretation: Our study provides no evidence that glibenclamide (1.25 mg, 3/day) significantly reduces the proportion of poor outcome at day 90 after ICH. In addition, glibenclamide could result in higher incidence of hypoglycaemia. Larger trials of glibenclamide with optimised medication regimen are warranted. PurposePlatform firms are playing an increasingly major role in venture investment. Based on the motivation perspective and signaling theory, this paper examines the effects of platform corporate venture capital (CVC) versus traditional CVC on Internet IPO underpricing.Design/methodology/approachThe sample consists of 117 Chinese Internet firms that went public between 2004 and 2019. Two-stage Heckman regression analysis was used to test several hypotheses.FindingsThis paper finds that, compared to traditional CVC firms, platform CVC firms increase Internet IPO underpricing. In particular, with the contingency of strong prior performance or implementation of China’s “Internet plus” policy, platform CVC firms increase Internet IPO underpricing more than traditional CVC firms. With increasing Internet penetration, platform CVC firms will increase Internet IPO underpricing less than traditional CVC firms.Practical implicationsAs CVC firms differ in their key resources and motivations used to realize their strategic goals, IPO firms should formulate their resource acquisition strategies according to their resource needs and the contexts in which they operate.Originality/valueBy identifying the differences between platform CVC and traditional CVC, this paper complements previous research on the role of CVC backing of IPOs and extends the knowledge of CVC investment by shedding light on the contingency value of corporate investors and Internet IPO underpricing in emerging markets.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to validate whether regional ventilation and perfusion data measured by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with saline bolus could discriminate three broad acute respiratory failure (ARF) etiologies. Methods Perfusion image was generated from EIT-based impedance–time curves caused by 10 ml 10% NaCl injection during a respiratory hold. Ventilation image was captured before the breath holding period under regular mechanical ventilation. Abstract Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is very commonly-seen in clinical settings, and GDM patients may have higher levels of anxiety. It’s necessary to evaluate the anxiety level and potentially influencing factors in patients with GDM, to provide insights for the management of anxiety of GDM patients. Methods Patients with GDM treated in our hospital from May, 2018 to May, 2020 were included. We evaluated the characteristics of patients and the scores of pregnancy-related anxiety scale for anxiety level, vulnerable personality style questionnaire (VPSQ) for personality, general self-efficacy scale (GSES) for self-efficacy, social support rating scale (SSRS) for social support level. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the potential influencing factors of anxiety in GDM patients. Results A total of 386 GDM patients were included, the incidence of anxiety in patients with GDM was 59.07%. Abstract Background Individualized positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has potential interest in the optimization of ventilation distribution in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The aim of the study was to determine whether early individualized titration of PEEP with EIT improved outcomes in patients with ARDS. Methods A total of 117 ARDS patients receiving mechanical ventilation were randomly assigned to EIT group (n = 61, PEEP adjusted based on ventilation distribution) or control group (n = 56, low PEEP/FiO2 table). The primary outcome was 28-day mortality. Secondary and exploratory outcomes were ventilator-free days, length of ICU stay, incidence of pneumothorax and barotrauma, and difference in Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score at day 1 (ΔD1-SOFA) and day 2 (ΔD2-SOFA) compared with baseline. Imbalanced mitochondrial dynamics including inhibited mitochondrial fusion is associated with cardiac dysfunction as well as tumorigenesis. This study sought to explore the effects of promoting mitochondrial fusion on doxorubicin(Dox)-induced cardiotoxicity and its antitumor efficacy, with a focus on the underlying metabolic mechanisms. Herein, the inhibition of Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion was identified as a key phenotype in Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. Restoration of Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion enhanced mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, reduced cellular injury/apoptosis and inhibited mitochondria-derived oxidative stress in the Dox-treated cardiomyocytes. Application of lentivirus expressing Drp1 (mitochondrial fusion inhibitor) or Rote/Anti A (mitochondrial complex I/III inhibitors) blunted the above protective effects of Mfn2. Cardiac-specific Mfn2 transgenic mice showed preserved mitochondrial fusion and attenuated myocardial injury upon Dox exposure in vivo. The suppression of Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion was induced by Dox-elicited upregulation of FoxO1, which inhibited the transcription of Mfn2 by binding to its promoter sites. In the B16 melanoma, Mfn2 upregulation not only attenuated tumor growth alone but also further delayed tumor growth in the presence of Dox. Mechanistically, Mfn2 synergized with the inhibitory action of Dox on glycolysis metabolism in the tumor cells. One common feature in both cardiomyocytes and tumor cells was that Mfn2 increased the ratio of oxygen consumption rate to extracellular acidification rate, suggesting Mfn2 triggered a shift from aerobic glycolysis to mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. In conclusion, targeting Mfn2-mediated mitochondrial fusion may provide a dual therapeutic advantage in Dox-based chemotherapy by simultaneously defending against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity and boosting its antitumor potency via metabolic shift.

Cultures around the world show varying levels of conservatism. While maintaining traditional ideas prevents wrong ones from being embraced, it also slows or prevents adaptation to new times. Without exploration there can be no improvement, but often this effort is wasted as it fails to produce better results, making it better to exploit the best known option. This tension is known as the exploration/exploitation issue, and it occurs at the individual and group levels, whenever decisions are made. As such, it is has been investigated across many disciplines. We extend previous work by approximating a continuum of traits under local exploration, employing the method of adaptive dynamics, and studying multiple fitness functions. In this work, we ask how nature would solve the exploration/exploitation issue, by allowing natural selection to operate on an exploration parameter in a variety of contexts, thinking of exploration as mutation in a trait space with a varying fitness function. Specifically, we study how exploration rates evolve by applying adaptive dynamics to the replicator-mutator equation, under two types of fitness functions. For the first, payoffs are accrued from playing a two-player, two-action symmetric game, we consider representatives of all games in this class, including the Prisoner’s Dilemma, Hawk-Dove, and Stag Hunt games, finding exploration rates often evolve downwards, but can also undergo neutral selection as well depending on the games parameters or initial conditions. Second, we study time dependent fitness with a function having a single oscillating peak. By increasing the period, we see a jump in the optimal exploration rate, which then decreases towards zero as the frequency of environmental change increases. These results establish several possible evolutionary scenarios for exploration rates, providing insight into many applications, including why we can see such diversity in rates of cultural change.

Steel-fiber-reinforced scoria aggregate concrete (SFSAC), which contains scoria aggregate and steel fiber, was developed to reduce the environmental impacts and improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Experimental studies were performed. The test variables included steel fiber volume contents (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%), freeze-thaw cycles (0 and 25 times), and temperature (20 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C). Mass loss, relative dynamic elastic modulus, mechanical properties, and the variation pattern of the complete stress–strain curves were analyzed through rapid freeze-thaw, high-temperature, and mechanical tests. The test results showed that after 25 freeze-thaw cycles and then exposure to high temperatures, the surfaces of SFSAC specimens showed aggregate spalling accompanied by dense cracks. Moreover, the residual mechanical properties of steel-fiber-reinforced natural aggregate concrete (SFNAC) were better than those of natural aggregate concrete (NAC). Although the incorporation of steel fiber cannot significantly improve the anti-freezing performance of SFSAC, it can improve the residual mechanical properties of SFSAC, and the optimal amount of incorporation is 1%, considering the economic cost factors. The stress–strain curves of both SFSAC and SFNAC showed the same trend after freeze-thaw cycles and then high temperatures, i.e., the peak stress decreased, the peak strain increased, and the descending section tended to level off. Finally, based on the concrete damage mechanics theory, considering the role of steel fibers in the uniaxial compression process of scoria aggregate concrete (SAC) and the effect of freeze-thaw and high-temperature tests on the SFSAC, the mechanical damage model and the uniaxial compression stress–strain constitutive model were proposed as being able to highly accurately reflect the overall process damage characteristics of SFSAC after freeze-thaw and then high-temperature tests, and also provided a theoretical basis for the high-temperature resistance assessment of SFSAC structures in cold regions.

Abstract The influence of blood pressure variability (BPV) on outcomes in patients with severe stroke is still largely unsettled. Using the data of CHASE trial, the authors calculated the BPV during the acute phase and subacute phase of severe stroke, respectively. The primary outcome was to investigate the relationship between BPV and 90‐day modified Rankin scale (mRS) ≥ 3. The BPV was assessed by eight measurements including standard deviation (SD), mean, maximum, minimum, coefficient of variation (CV), successive variation (SV), functional successive variation (FSV), and average real variability (ARV). Then, the SD of SBP was divided into quintiles and compared the quintile using logistic regression in three models. The acute phase included 442 patients, and the subacute phase included 390 patients. Abstract The Fields Medal, often referred as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, is awarded to no more than four mathematicians under the age of 40, every 4 years. In recent years, its conferral has come under scrutiny of math historians, for rewarding the existing elite rather than its original goal of elevating under-represented mathematicians. Prior studies of elitism focus on citational practices while a characterization of the structural forces that prevent access remain unclear. Here we show the flow of elite mathematicians between countries and lingo-ethnic identity, using network analysis and natural language processing on 240,000 mathematicians and their advisor–advisee relationships. We present quantitative evidence of how the Fields Medal helped integrate Japan after WWII, through analysis of the elite circle formed around Fields Medalists. We show increases in pluralism among major countries, though Arabic, African, and East Asian identities remain under-represented at the elite level. Our results demonstrate concerted efforts by academic committees, such as prize giving, can either reinforce the existing elite or reshape its definition. We anticipate our methodology of academic genealogical analysis can serve as a useful diagnostic for equity and systemic bias within academic fields.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a noninvasive functional diagnostic technique that has been successfully applied to human lung and brain. EIT reconstruction is an ill-conditioned problem: the regularization parameters establish a trade-off between acceptable data fitting and acceptable solution stability. This trade-off is necessary to select the optimal regularization parameters for each data frame to continuously obtain high-quality images in real-time monitoring. However, using the objective regularization parameter selection method before each image reconstruction may reduce the reconstruction efficiency, and using heuristic selection for all images may cause significant quality degradation, thereby creating challenges in long-term clinical EIT monitoring. This study explores a robust EIT target adaptive differential iterative reconstruction algorithm that does not require the advance selection of the optimal regularization parameter to facilitate the clinical application of EIT long-term bedside monitoring. Specifically, second-order Taylor approximation expansion and Euler–Lagrange theorem were used to derive the conductivity differential iteration relationship. Furthermore, the reconstruction quality and generalization ability of the proposed algorithm were validated based on comparisons with the L-curve and the generalized cross-validation parameter selection methods through simulations, phantom experiments, and human lung recruitment data. Compared with the L-curve and generalized cross-validation methods, the TADI algorithm reduces the position error by 33.07% and 47.17%, the ringing by 26.49% and 32.69%, and the shape deformation by 18.34% and 19.40% on average, respectively. The results revealed that the TADI algorithm could achieve a significant improvement over the existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of stability, consistency, and efficiency.

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (1056 AD), located in Shanxi province, China, is a unique architectural pure-wooden artifact standing for a millennium. Despite its longevity, the structures and properties of the ancient architectural woods used in its construction have been significantly degraded due to long-term natural aging, which has profoundly impacted the preservation of this valuable cultural heritage. To better understand this degradation, we studied the deterioration of a baluster (Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr.) from Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. The study employed various analytical techniques, including optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation technology, to evaluate the microstructures and properties of the ancient architectural woods. Results indicated that the destruction of wood cell walls was primarily transverse transwall destruction and interfacial debonding and that the degradation of chemical components was primarily in the hemicellulose (xylan) and amorphous region of cellulose. The reduced elastic modulus and hardness of tracheid cell walls in the ancient architectural woods were higher than in recent larch woods. This study would help deepen understanding of wood deterioration during long-term natural aging for the subsequent preservation and protection of wooden cultural heritages and longer use of ancient timber constructions.

Sleeve grouting compactness has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of rebar connections. However, a detection method for the grouting compactness inside the sleeve is still lacking. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to propose a new acoustic emission (AE) detection technology for horizontal defects and vertical defects in sleeves with different grout compactness. The basic waveform characteristic of the AE signal is analyzed. The results show that the count of acoustic emission signals decreases with the increase of grouting compactness, and the reduction rate of vertical defects is larger than that of horizontal defects. The acoustic emission waveform is further processed through wavelet packet decomposition. It is found that with the increase of grouting compactness, the composition of approximately 125–187.5 kHz in the signal is accelerated to approximately 62.5–125 kHz. The grouting compactness index is constructed by wavelet packet energy ratio. With the increase of grouting compactness, the compactness index decreases exponentially, indicating that the presence of defects can greatly reduce the attenuation of elastic wave energy. The compactness index is highly consistent with the size of defects and has little relationship with the distribution of grout materials. Experiments show that the proposed method is effective when grout defects reach a certain degree and provides a new method for sleeve grouting compactness detection.

The search for novel drugs for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction and reperfusion injury of the heart is an urgent aim of modern pharmacology. Opioid peptides could be such potential drugs in this area. However, the molecular mechanism of the infarct-limiting effect of opioids in reperfusion remains unexplored. The objective of this research was to study the signaling mechanisms of the cardioprotective effect of deltorphin II in reperfusion. Rats were subjected to coronary artery occlusion (45 min) and reperfusion (2 h). The ratio of infarct size/area at risk was determined. This study indicated that the cardioprotective effect of deltorphin II in reperfusion is mediated via the activation of peripheral δ2 opioid receptor (OR), which is most likely localized in cardiomyocytes. We studied the role of guanylyl cyclase, protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ), phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3-kinase), extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2-kinase), ATP-sensitive K+-channels (KATP channels), mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP), NO synthase (NOS), protein kinase A (PKA), Janus 2 kinase, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the large conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (BKCa-channel), reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cardioprotective effect of deltorphin II. The infarct-reducing effect of deltorphin II appeared to be mediated via the activation of PKCδ, PI3-kinase, ERK1/2-kinase, sarcolemmal KATP channel opening, and MPTP closing.

Under constant selection, each trait has a fixed fitness, and small mutation rates allow populations to efficiently exploit the optimal trait. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that mutation rates will evolve downwards. However, we find that this need not be the case, examining several models of mutation. While upwards evolution of the mutation rate has been found with frequency- or time-dependent fitness, we demonstrate its possibility in a much simpler context. This work uses adaptive dynamics to study the evolution of the mutation rate, and the replicator–mutator equation to model trait evolution. Our approach differs from previous studies by considering a wide variety of methods to represent mutation. We use a finite string approach inspired by genetics as well as a model of local mutation on a discretization of the unit intervals, handling mutation beyond the endpoints in three ways. The main contribution of this work is a demonstration that the evolution of the mutation rate can be significantly more complicated than what is usually expected in relatively simple models.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is low-cost and noninvasive and has the potential for real-time imaging and bedside monitoring of brain injury. However, brain injury monitoring by EIT imaging suffers from image noise (IN) and resolution problems, causing blurred reconstructions. To address these problems, a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model is built, and a fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm with continuation (FISTA-C) is proposed. Results of numerical simulations and head phantom experiments indicate that FISTA-C reduces IN by 63.2%, 47.2%, and 29.9% and 54.4%, 44.7%, and 22.7%, respectively, when compared with the damped least-squares algorithm, the split Bergman, and the FISTA algorithms. When the signal-to-noise ratio of the measurements is 80–50 dB, FISTA-C can reduce IN by 83.3%, 72.3%, and 68.7% on average when compared with the three algorithms, respectively. Both simulation and phantom experiments suggest that FISTA-C produces the best image resolution and can identify the two closest targets. Moreover, FISTA-C is more practical for clinical application because it does not require excessive parameter adjustments. This technology can provide better reconstruction performance and significantly outperforms the traditional algorithms in terms of IN and resolution and is expected to offer a general algorithm for brain injury monitoring imaging via EIT.
