Abstract Background Pit mud (PM) hosts diverse microbial communities, which serve as a medium to impart flavor and quality to Baijiu and exhibit long-term tolerance to ethanol and acids, resulting in a unique ecosystem. However, the ecology and metabolic functions of PM remain poorly understood, as many taxa in PM represent largely novel lineages. In this study, we used a combination of metagenomic analysis and chemical derivatization LC–MS analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of microbial community structure, metabolic function, phylogeny, horizontal gene transfer, and the relationship with carboxyl compounds in spatiotemporal PM samples. Results Our findings revealed three distinct stages in the spatiotemporal changes of prokaryotic communities in PM: an initial phase dominated by Lactobacillus, a transitional phase, and a final state of equilibrium. Significant variations in α- and β-diversity were observed across different spatial and temporal PM samples. We identified 178 medium- and high-quality non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), and constructed their phylogenetic tree, depicting their roles in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. The Wood-Ljungdahl pathway and reverse TCA cycle were identified as the main carbon fixation mechanisms, with both hydrogenotrophic and aceticlastic methanogens playing a major role in methane production, and methylotrophic pathway observed in older PM. Furthermore, we identified relationships between prokaryotes and 29 carboxyl metabolites, including medium- and long-chain fatty acids. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) was widespread in PM, particularly among clostridia, Bacteroidota, Bacilli, and Euryarchaeota, and was shown to play critical roles in fermentation dynamics, carbon fixation, methane production, and nitrogen and sulfur metabolism. Conclusion Our study provides new insights into the evolution and function of spatiotemporal PM, as well as its interactions with carboxyl metabolites. Lactobacillus dominated in new PM, while methanogens and clostridia were predominant in older or deeper PM layers. The three distinct stages of prokaryotic community development in PM and HGT played critical roles in metabolic function of spatiotemporal PM. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of α-diversity, β-diversity, methanogens, and Clostridium as useful indicators for assessing PM quality in the production of high-quality Baijiu.

Abstract Background This study aimed to observe corneal and retinal thicknesses at 5 years after femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia, investigate the effect of epithelial remodeling on refractive status and visual quality, and compare retinal thicknesses among fundus tessellation grades. Methods Patients who received FS-LASIK or SMILE 5 years before were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. After 1:1 propensity score matching, each surgical group obtained 177 patients (177 eyes). Examinations including visual acuity, refraction, corneal and retinal thicknesses, corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs), and fundus photography were performed in this visit at 5 years after surgery. The Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire was used to assess visual symptoms and overall satisfaction. Corneal and retinal thicknesses between groups were compared, contributing factors were analyzed, and correlations with postoperative refractive status, HOAs, QoV scores and overall satisfaction were evaluated. Results The discrepancy of epithelial thickness between central and pericentral zones in FS-LASIK group was larger than that in SMILE group, which was negatively correlated with postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), positively correlated with spherical aberration (all P 0.05) in both surgical groups. There was no statistical difference in stromal thickness and total corneal thickness (all P > 0.05). Most annuluses of epithelial and stromal thicknesse were linearly related to preoperative SE (all P 0.05). Conclusion The tendency that epithelial thickness in central zone was thicker than peripheral zone was more obvious at 5 years after FS-LASIK compared to SMILE. This uneven distribution of epithelial thickness might play a role in myopic regression and the changes in HOAs, especially in patients with high myopia, but it had little effect on patients’ subjective visual quality and satisfaction. Retinal thicknesses were not affected by these two surgical methods, and they did not appear to be the clinical indicators for myopic regression or fundus tessellation progression.

Abstract Background To investigate the safety and effectiveness of non-viscoelastic agent technique for EVO-ICL implantation. Methods A total of 181 myopia eyes that underwent non-toric ICL without viscoelastic agent through single incision from Beijing Tongren Hosipital were included. An analysis was conducted on the quantity of haptics that were initially implanted intraoperatively into the posterior chamber. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was evaluated at before and 2 h,24 h,1week,6month after surgery. Anterior chamber volume(ACV), anterior chamber depth(ACD), anterior chamber angle(ACA), pupil diameter(PD) and corneal densitometry density (ECD) were evaluated at before and 24 h postoperatively. Refractive outcomes were investigated at before, 24 h ,7 days and 6months. Vault was evaluated at 24 h ,7 days and 6months. Results The efficacy and safety indices were 1.30 ± 0.32 and 1.31 ± 0.32, respectively. Of 181 eyes, 99 eyes received 4 haptics on the first attempt without any adjustment, and 72 eyes received lens alignment without an viscoelastic agent. Objective: To investigate the antioxidant activity of fermented tartaty buckwheat extract of Pleurotus eryngii in vitro as well as its protective effect on alcohol-induced liver and gastric mucosa injury in vivo. Methods: The study involved determining the contents of functional components in fermented tartary buckwheat extract and observing its antioxidant capacity. Mice models of chronic alcoholic liver and gastric mucosa injury were established using Lieber-DeCarli liquid feed. The protective effects of fermented tartary buckwheat extract at low and high doses (1.5 g/kg B.W., 3.0 g/kg B.W.) were investigated for both liver and gastric mucosa injury. Results: The extract of fermented buckwheat with Pleurotus eryngii contained more antioxidant components, the contents of polyphenols, flavonoids and triterpenes were 11.40±0.32 mgGAE/g DW, 17.19±0.30 mg RE/g DW and 7.59±0.24 mg/g, respectively. The contents of rutin and quercetin were as follows: 13.55±0.05 and 0.665±0.01 mg/g. The iron reducing antioxidant capacity and DPPH and ABTS+ free radical scavenging efficiency of Tartary buckwheat extract were 16.66±0.65, 33.49±1.26 and 15.68±1.17 μmol Trolox/g DW, respectively. Abstract Purpose The corneal cap thickness is a vital parameter designed in small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). The purpose was to investigate the changes in corneal subbasal nerve plexus (SNP) and stromal cells with different cap thicknesses and evaluate the optimized design for the surgery. Methods In this prospective, comparative, non-randomized study, a total of 108 eyes of 54 patients who underwent SMILE were allocated into three groups with different corneal cap thicknesses (110 μm, 120 μm or 130 μm group). The SNP and stromal cell morphological changes obtained from in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCCM) along with their refractive outcomes were collected at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the parameters among the three groups. Results The SNPs in the three groups all decreased after surgery and revealed a gradual increasing trend during the 6-month follow-up. The values of the quantitative nerve metrics were significantly lower in the 110 μm group than in the 120 μm and 130 μm groups, especially at 1 week postoperatively. No difference was detected between the 120 μm and 130 μm groups at any time point. Both Langerhans cells and keratocytes were activated after surgery, and the activation was alleviated during the follow-up. Conclusions The SMILE surgeries with 110 μm, 120 μm or 130 μm cap thickness design achieved good efficacy, safety, accuracy and stability for moderate to high myopic correction while the thicker corneal cap was more beneficial for corneal nerve regeneration.

In this work, the asymmetrical rolling of 860 μm thick high-purity titanium (HP-Ti) strips is investigated. HP-Ti ultra-thin strips are produced in thicknesses ranging from 280 μm to 20 μm. The microstructure and texture evolution of HP-Ti ultra-thin strips were analyzed using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The raw strips have a homogeneous and equiaxed microstructure, containing some face-centered cubic (FCC) Ti laths. With a rise in rolling reduction, equiaxed grains change into deformation structures characterized by a high density of dislocations. The formation of an ultra-fine grained microstructure and the elimination of FCC-Ti laths come next. The influence of grain rotation and slip systems on the development of texture in ultra-thin strips during rolling reduction is illustrated through the analysis of {0002} pole figures and orientation distribution function. The tensile qualities of ultra-thin strips are correlated with their microstructure.

Abstract Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are important nutrients for plant growth and development. Soil alkalization is one of the main obstacles limiting the sustainable development of agriculture. Northern Ningxia is located in the arid and semi-arid region, with serious soil alkalinization. Alfalfa has the advantages of strong saline-alkali tolerance, high yield, high quality, and wide adaptability. It is an important forage for the comprehensive improvement and rational utilization of saline-alkali land and has great significance for solving land resource shortages, improving the ecological environment, and ensuring food security. It is important to study soil organic carbon (SOC), total N (TN), total P (TP), and stoichiometry of the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere of alfalfa in alkaline soils. Therefore, N and P were added to the alkaline alfalfa field in the Yinchuan Plain of Hetao Basin in our experiment. Six treatments were set up, i.e., N-free (WN), medium N (MN) for 90 kg/hm2, high N (HN) for 180 kg/hm2, P-free (WP), medium P (MP) for 135 kg/hm2, and high P (HP) for 270 kg/hm2. The results are as follows: The N addition promotes SOC and TN but inhibits TP, and P addition promotes SOC and TP but inhibits TN of three soil layers. The N addition decreases C/N but increases C/P and N/P, while the P addition increases C/N but decreases C/P and N/P of three soil layers. Abstract Background The design of cap thickness for small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) plays a role in post-laser vision correction (post-LVC) corneal biomechanics. This study aimed to compare the corneal biomechanical characteristics following SMILE with different cap thicknesses of 110 μm, 120 μm, and 130 μm for myopia and myopic astigmatism correction. Methods Seventy-five patients (146 eyes) who underwent SMILE with designed cap thickness of 110 μm, 120 μm, and 130 μm were recruited at the Eye Center of Beijing Tongren Hospital between August 2020 and November 2021. Visual acuity, refraction, and corneal biomechanical parameters were measured preoperatively, 1 week and 1, 3, 6 months postoperatively. One-way analysis of variances (ANOVA) with Bonferroni correction or Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to compare the parameters among different groups. Repeated-measures analysis of variance with Bonferroni correction or Friedman test was applied for comparing the parameters within different follow-up times. Results Uncorrected distance visual acuity of 110-μm group was better only at 1-week and 1-month postoperatively (P = 0.012, 0.037). There were no significant differences in spherical equivalent, nor in Corvis biomechanical index-laser vision correction (CBI-LVC). All the parameters reached stability at 3-month postoperatively. Integrated radius (IR) and deformation amplitude ratio 2 mm (DA ratio 2 mm) in 120-μm and 130-μm groups were higher than 110-μm group at 1-month postoperatively (P = 0.019, 0.002). So was Ambrósio relational thickness (ARTh) at 6-month postoperatively (P = 0.011). Abstract Introduction To investigate the feasibility and safety of scleral ultraviolet A (UVA) cross-linking (scleral CXL) on pathologically blindness. Methods This was a prospective, observational clinical study. Five patients with monocular blindness due to pathological myopic maculopathy were enrolled. Eyes with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) under 0.05 were defined as experimental eyes. The fellow eyes were defined as control eyes. Patients first underwent posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) surgery in the control eye. Thereafter, scleral CXL surgery was performed in the experimental eye on the same day. Visual acuity, BCVA, slit lamp biomicroscopic examination, intraocular pressure measurement, corneal specula microscopies, axis length measurement, funduscopy with pupil dilation, color fundus photography, full-field flash electroretinography, optical coherence tomography, and color Doppler flow imaging were performed at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. Results No signs of inflammation were observed after operation and throughout the follow-up period. Retinoschisis was improved, while choroidal neovascularization fibrosis and retinal and choroidal atrophy were unchanged after scleral CXL. There were no statistically significant differences in the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery, and posterior ciliary artery parameters of color Doppler flow imaging or in retinal thickness, within experimental and control eyes, at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, or 12 months (P > 0.05). Conclusions This pilot study verified the feasibility and safety of scleral CXL on human blindness. The UVA-CXL on the sclera of human eyes seems to have the same effect as PSR in preventing progressive pathological myopia in the future. Summary: Background: Children and adolescents’ myopia is a major public problem. Although the clinical effect of various interventions has been extensively studied, there is a lack of national-level and integral assessments to simultaneously quantify the economics and effectiveness of comprehensive myopia prevention and control programs. We aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness between traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy and school-based myopia screening program in China. Methods: A Markov model was used to compare the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness among school-based myopia screening, traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, and digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy among 6 to 18-year-old rural and urban schoolchildren. Parameters were collected from published sources. The primary outcomes were quality-adjusted life-year, disability-adjusted life-year, incremental cost-utility ratio, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Extensive sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness and sensitivity of base-case analysis. Findings: Compared with school-based myopia screening strategy, after implementing digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy, the prevalence of myopia among 18-year-old students in rural and urban areas was reduced by 3.79% and 3.48%, respectively. The incremental cost-utility ratio per quality-adjusted life-year gained with the digital myopia management plan ($11,301 for rural setting, and $10,707 for urban setting) was less than 3 times the per capita gross domestic product in rural settings ($30,501) and less than 1 time the per capita gross domestic product in urban settings ($13,856). In cost-effectiveness analysis, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio produced by digital comprehensive myopia management strategy ($37,446 and $41,814 per disability-adjusted life-year averted in rural and urban settings) slightly exceeded the cost-effectiveness threshold. When assuming perfect compliance, full coverage of outdoor activities and spectacles satisfied the cost-effectiveness threshold, and full coverage of outdoor activities produced the lowest cost ($321 for rural settings and $808 for urban settings). Interpretations: Health economic evidence confirmed the cost-effectiveness of promoting digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategies for schoolchildren at the national level. Sufficient evidence provides an economic and public health reference for further action by governments, policy-makers and other myopia-endemic countries. Abstract Background To report the predictive factors of myopic regression in patients who had undergone small incision lenticular extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileuses (FS-LASIK) after 3–12 months of follow-up. Methods This retrospective case series study recruited patients with a subjective sphere of − 1.00 to − 6.00 D myopia. SMILE was performed in 1629 eyes of 1629 patients with a subjective refraction spherical equivalent (SEQ) of − 4.57 ± 1.20 D and 1414 eyes of 1414 patients with a subjective SEQ of − 4.53 ± 1.26 D in FS-LASIK. Refractive outcomes were recorded at 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Predictors affecting myopic regression and other covariates were estimated with a Cox proportional hazard (Cox PH) model for the two surgical methods. Results At 12 months, no significant difference was evident in the efficacy (P = 0.934), predictability (P = 0.733), or stability (P = 0.66) between FS-LASIK and SMILE. The survival rates were 83.7% in the FS-LASIK group and 88.1% in the SMILE group. Multivariate analysis by the Cox PH model revealed a similar probability of postoperative myopic regression with SMILE or FS-LASIK (P = 0.630). Predictors of myopic regression included preoperative higher-order aberration root mean square with 3 mm pupil diameter (pre-HOA-RMS3) (P = 0.004), anterior chamber depth (ACD) (P = 0.015), pre-subjective sphere (P = 0.016), corneal diameter (P = 0.016), optical zone (OZ) (P = 0.02), and predicted depth of ablation (DA) (P = 0.003). Conclusion SMILE and FS-LASIK had a similar risk of myopic regression for low to moderate myopia. Pre-HOA-RMS3, ACD, pre-subjective sphere, corneal diameter, OZ, and predicted DA were predictors of myopic regression.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to compare the astigmatic correction by vector analysis in patients with high myopic astigmatism after femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) with cyclotorsion compensation or small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with stringent head positioning. Setting Beijing Aier-Intech Eye Hospital, Beijing, China. Design A retrospective case series. Methods Patients who had correction of myopic astigmatism of 2 diopters (D) or more treated with either FS-LASIK with cyclotorsion compensation or SMILE with stringent head positioning were included. The results of vision and refraction were analyzed and compared between groups with the right eye. Results The study enrolled 94 patients (41eyes in an FS-LASIK with compensation of cyclotorsion group and 53 eyes in a SMILE with stringent head positioning control group. The mean preoperative manifest cylinder was -2.65 ± 0.77D in the FS-LASIK group and 2.51 ± 0.56D in the SMILE group (P = 0.302). At 12 months, there was no significant between-group difference in uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, P = 0.274) and postoperative spherical equivalent (SEQ) (P = 0.107). 46.3% and 24.5% of eyes in the FS-LASIK and SMILE groups were within 0.25 D were within 0.25D postoperative cylinder, respectively, and 78% and 66% of eyes in these two groups were within 0.5 D postoperative cylinder (P = 0.027, P = 0.202). The vector analysis showed comparable between-group target-induced astigmatism (TIA) (P = 0.114), surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) (P = 0.057), difference vector (DV, P = 0.069), and the angle of error (AE) (P = 0 .213) values. The index of success (IOS) was 0.18 in the FS-LASIK group and 0.24 in the SMILE group (P = 0.024), with a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion FS-LASIK with compensation of cyclotorsion showed a favorable correction of high myopic astigmatism (≥ 2.0 D) compared to SMILE with stringent head positioning at 12 months.

The Trophic State Index (TSI), based on chlorophylla [TSI(Chla)], Secchi depth [TSI(SD)], total nitrogen [TSI(TN)], and total phosphorus [TSI(TP)], is a popular tool for lake eutrophication assessment worldwide, higher TSI scores implicitly indicate increased intensity of algal blooms. However, the application of TSI across diverse lakes may be questionable since the precondition of SD, TN, and TP as indicators of algal blooms lies in the fact that SD is dominated by algal turbidity; Chla in all lakes respond the same (or very similarly) to changes in TN (or TP) concentrations. Herein, 120 natural lakes and artificial reservoirs with a wide range of morphological, physicochemical, and Chla variables in the Chinese Eastern Plains ecoregion were collected via data mining to elaborate the utility of TSI on a regional scale. Moreover, we analyzed the source of uncertainties of TSI(SD), TSI(TN), and TSI(TP) in indicating algal biomass. Our results demonstrated that the TSI(SD), TSI(TN), and TSI(TP) scores were different with those of the TSI(Chla) (approximately 10 scores deviations). Considering 10 scores represent a doubling in algal biomass, the direct use of TSI may cause the misestimation of algal blooms intensity and under- or over-protection of the lakes and reservoirs. Furthermore, our results revealed water depth (WD, m) is the key inner-regional factor affecting the accuracy of TSI(SD), TSI(TN), and TSI(TP) in indicating algal biomass. For one, WD was closely related to mass ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) and non-algal light attenuation (NALA, m−1) in our study lakes and reservoirs (lnNALA = -0.70*lnWD + 1.02, P 5 m in our study area. On a broader scale, empirical TN (or TP), Chla, and SD relationships of lakes in other ecoregions may also be affected by WD and other unmeasured factors (e.g., zooplankton grazing), the direct use of TSI may be problematical. Thus, this study provides essential information for developing accurate lake eutrophication assessments in both ours and other ecoregions.

Abstract Background To study the baseline factors that related to faster axial elongation after orthokeratology (OK) treatment and the characteristics of cases with axial length decrease in a group of myopia children. Methods This is a retrospective study. The records of 73 children who had wear OK lens for at least one year were reviewed. Only the data of right eyes were included. Baseline data included: age, gender, parental myopia, refractive error, corneal power, central corneal thickness, axial length and anterior chamber depth. Corneal power, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth and axial length after one-year of OK lens wear were also collected. The related factors affecting axial length change were analyzed. Abstract Background Scleral cross-linking can enhance the biomechanical strength of the sclera and is expected to be a new operative method for the prevention of myopia. However, studies investigating the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) after blue light-riboflavin induced scleral collagen cross-linking (SXL) in rhesus monkeys are limited. This study aimed to investigate the changes in IOP and OPA in three-year-old rhesus macaques 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after blue light-riboflavin SXL. Methods Seven three-year-old rhesus macaques (14 eyes) were randomly divided into two groups, with 4 monkeys in group A (8 eyes) and 3 monkeys in group B (6 eyes). The right eye of each rhesus macaque was used as the experimental eye, whereas the left eye was used as the control. In group A, one quadrant of each right eye was irradiated. In group B, two quadrants of each right eye and one quadrant of each left eye were irradiated. The IOP and OPA of both eyes were measured in all seven rhesus macaques before SXL and 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively, and differences in the IOP and OPA between the experimental and control eyes were evaluated via the paired t test. Results In groups A and B, there were no significant differences between the experimental and control eyes in the IOP or OPA before SXL or 1 week, 1 month, or 3 months postoperatively (P > 0.05). Conclusions The IOP and OPA are not significantly affected in 1 vs 0 or in 1 vs 2 quadrants of blue light SXL.

Objective To investigate the effects of scleral collagen cross-linking (SXL) using riboflavin and ultraviolet A (UVA) light on the scleral thickness of different regions and expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and membrane-type MMP-1 (MT1-MMP) in guinea pigs with lens-induced myopia. Methods Forty-eight 4-week-old guinea pigs were assigned to three groups (n = 16 per group): SXL group, lens-induced myopia (LIM) group, and control group. The sclera of the right eye of the guinea pig in the SXL group was surgically exposed, riboflavin was dropped on the treatment area for 10 minutes before the 30-minute UVA irradiation. The same surgical procedure was performed in the LIM group without UVA irradiation. The -10.00 D lenses were then placed on the right eyes of guinea pigs in the SXL and LIM groups for six weeks. The control group received no treatment. The left eyes were untreated in all groups. The ocular axial length (AXL) and refraction were measured at 4 weeks and 10 weeks of age. 10-week-old guinea pigs were sacrificed, and the right eyes were enucleated and evenly divided for preparation of hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained sections, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blotting. The scleral thickness of different regions was measured on HE stained sections. The temporal half of the sclera was harvested to measure the expression of MMP-2 and MT1-MMP by qPCR and western blotting. Results The AXL was significantly shorter, and the degree of myopic refraction was significantly lower in the SXL group than those in the LIM group at 10 weeks of age. The scleral thickness of the cross-linked area was significantly greater in the SXL group than that of the corresponding area in the LIM group, while the scleral thickness of the untreated nasal side was not significantly different between the SXL group and the LIM group. The expression of MMP-2 and MT1-MMP of the cross-linked sclera was significantly downregulated compared with that of the corresponding area in the LIM group. Conclusion Riboflavin/UVA SXL could slow myopia progression and thicken the cross-linked sclera in guinea pigs, which might be related to the downregulation of MMP-2 and MT1-MMP expression during the scleral remodeling process.

The use of chemical fertilizer along with organic fertilizer is an important agricultural practice that improves crop yield but also affects soil biogeochemical cycles. In this study, a maize field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of NPK fertilizer (NPK), organic fertilizer (OF), and their combination (NPK+OF) on soil chemical properties, bacterial and fungal community structures, and diversity compared the control (CK, without any fertilizer). The results showed that the application of OF and NPK-combined OF increased soil organic matter (OM), total N, total P, available N, available P, and available K levels. For alpha diversity analyses, the application of fertilizers led to decreases in soil bacterial and fungal Shannon indices (except for NPK in fungi). Compared with CK, NPK, OF, and NPK+OF fertilization treatments significantly increased the abundances of Acidobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, and Basidiomycota. Network analysis showed that fertilization produced fewer connections among microbial taxa, especially in the combination of NPK and OF. A redundancy analysis combined with Mantel test further found that the soil OM, available N and P were the main soil-fertility factors driving microbial community variations. Therefore, using organic fertilizer or biological fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer to improve the status of soil C, N, and P is a promising method to maintain the balance of soil microorganisms in maize field.

Phenyllactic acid (PLA), a promising food preservative, is safe and effective against a broad spectrum of food-borne pathogens. However, its mechanisms against toxigenic fungi are still poorly understood. In this study, we applied physicochemical, morphological, metabolomics, and transcriptomics analyses to investigate the activity and mechanism of PLA inhibition of a typical food-contaminating mold, Aspergillus flavus. The results showed that PLA effectively inhibited the growth of A. flavus spores and reduced aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) production by downregulating key genes associated with AFB1 biosynthesis. Propidium iodide staining and transmission electron microscopy analysis demonstrated a dose-dependent disruption of the integrity and morphology of the A. flavus spore cell membrane by PLA. Multi-omics analyses showed that subinhibitory concentrations of PLA induced significant changes in A. flavus spores at the transcriptional and metabolic levels, as 980 genes and 30 metabolites were differentially expressed. Moreover, KEGG pathway enrichment analysis indicated PLA-induced cell membrane damage, energy-metabolism disruption, and central-dogma abnormality in A. flavus spores. The results provided new insights into the anti-A. flavus and -AFB1 mechanisms of PLA.

Between 9 July and 19 August 2016, the air concentrations of 57 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in Shandong Province, eastern China. Seven sampling sites representing urban, coastal and background sites were selected for sampling. The measured data were employed to investigate the VOCs’ characteristics, ozone formation potential, and main sources. During the sampling period, the concentrations of the VOCs ranged between 15.3 and 883 ppbv, with a mean of 139 ppbv. The most severely polluted city was Zibo (833 ppbv), followed by Jinan (33.5 ppbv) and Qingdao (32.8 ppbv). Propane was the most abundant species in all of the sampling sites, with a concentration range of 1.05–9.86 ppbv. Ethene, i-butane, 1-butene, cis-2-butene, n-butane, i-pentane, n-pentane, benzene and toluene were the predominant species in both the urban and coastal sites. Propylene equivalent concentrations (Pro-Equiv) and maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) were employed to assess the reactivity and contribution of each species to the photochemical ozone formation. The results showed that alkenes and aromatics were the most active species performing a key function in the ozone formation, accounting for 43.9–90.7% of the Pro-Equiv and 41.0–93% of the ozone formation potential (OFP). The ratios of ethylbenzene and m/p-xylene were calculated, and the results showed that local emissions were the main sources. Gasoline exhaust/fuel evaporation, industry process/solvent usage, diesel exhaust/petrochemical emission and coal burning were the dominant sources of VOCs in Shandong Province.

PurposeThe aim of this study was to evaluate the difference between Caucasian and Chinese healthy subjects with regards to Corvis ST dynamic corneal response parameters (DCRs).MethodsTwo thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine healthy Caucasian and Chinese subjects were included in this multicenter retrospective study. Subsequently, Chinese eyes were matched to Caucasians by age, intraocular pressure (IOP), and Corneal Thickness (CCT) using a case-control matching algorithm. The DCRs assessed were Deformation Amplitude (DA) Applanation 1 velocity (A1v), integrated radius (1/R), deformation amplitude ratio (DAratio), stiffness parameter at applanation 1 (SPA1), ARTh (Ambrósio's Relational Thickness to the horizontal profile), and the novel Stress Strain Index (SSI).ResultsAfter age-, CCT-, and IOP- matching, 503 Chinese were assigned to 452 Caucasians participants. Statistical analysis showed a statistical significant difference between Chinese and Caucasian Healthy subjects in the values of SPA1 (p = 0.008), Arth (p = 0.008), and SSI (p < 0.001). Conversely, DA, A1v, DAratio, and 1/R were not significantly different between the two ethnical groups (p > 0.05).ConclusionWe found significant differences in the values of the DCRs provided by the Corvis ST between Chinese and Caucasian healthy subjects.

The global prevalence of myopia has brought to the attention of the different eye and vision specialists, who make way to control its progression. Evidence have shown that a proactive reshaping of the eyeball is the core point of myopia developing process, which particularly includes the weakening, thinning, and expanding of the sclera. Thus, the sclera is considered to be a prime target for therapeutic manipulation in halting progressive myopia. In the past decades, corneal collagen cross-linking has been applied in clinical practice for treating aberrant corneal remodeling diseases. In this article, we hypothesize that scleral collagen cross-linking (SXL) has a huge potential in stabilizing myopic process by shaping the eyeball and preventing the aberrant scleral remodeling. In contrast with the current methods of optometry correction, such as physiotherapy, pharmacotherapy, spectacles, contact lenses, refractive surgeries, etc., eyeball-shaping method using SXL is a fundamental intervention which aims at the pathogenesis of progressive visual loss of myopia. Compared with the current posterior scleral reinforcement, the most advantage of SXL is that there is no allotransplant into the myopic eye, which means less expenditure, lower risk, and easier to handle in operating.

Vinegar is used as an acidic condiment and preservative worldwide. In Asia, various black vinegars are made from different combinations of grains, such as Sichuan bran vinegar (SBV), Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV), Zhenjiang aromatic vinegar (ZAV), and Fujian Monascus vinegar (FMV) in China and Ehime black vinegar in Japan (JBV). Understanding the chemical compositions of different vinegars can provide information about nutritional values and the quality of the taste. This study investigated the vinegar metabolome using a combination of GC-MS, conventional LC-MS, and chemical isotope labeling LC-MS. Different types of vinegar contained different metabolites and concentrations. Amino acids and organic acids were found to be the main components. Tetrahydroharman-3-carboxylic acid and harmalan were identified first in vinegar. Various diketopiperazines and linear dipeptides contributing to different taste effects were also detected first in vinegar. Dipeptides, 3-phenyllactic acid, and tyrosine were found to be potential metabolic markers for differentiating vinegars. The differently expressed pathway between Chinese and Japanese vinegar was tryptophan metabolism, while the main difference within Chinese vinegars was aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis metabolism. These results not only give insights into the metabolites in famous types of cereal vinegar but also provide valuable knowledge for making vinegar with desirable health characteristics.

The present study was conducted to compare the effect of two barnyard millet varieties viz. Echinochloa frumentacea (L.) (HNJZ) and Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) var. austro-japonensis (BZ), on fertility and physicochemical properties of alkaline soil of Ningxia, China. Soil rhizosphere of BZ and HNJZ with three replicates (5 plants from each replicate) were collected for bacterial communities metagenomic profiling and six rhizosphere soil samples from each treatment for untargeted-metabolomic analysis. Results revealed significant (p < 0.05) improvement in soil fertility for both millet varieties at 0–20 cm depth than 20–40 cm by decreasing the alkalinity and pH, while increasing the organic matter. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the most abundant phyla, whereas Megamonas, uncharacterized_Acidobacteria, and Halomonas were the most abundant genera. No difference in bacterial alpha diversity parameters was observed between HNJZ and BZ rhizospheres. Relative abundance of Cellvibrio and Devosia was increased (p < 0.05) in HNJZ, while Arenimonas, Gillisia, Sphingomonas, uncharacterized_Gammaproteobacteria, and Lysobacter were increased significantly (p < 0.05) in BZ rhizospheres. Beta diversity analysis revealed more diverse bacterial communities structure in HNJZ rhizosphere with higher Firmicutes ratio. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis revealed biosynthesis of alkaloids, histamine H2/H3 receptor agonists/antagonists, and arginine/proline metabolism as top three enriched KEGG pathways. The present study indicated that both millet varieties contributed to the reclamation of saline-alkali soil through reducing pH, total salts, and alkalinity while increasing the organic matter.

Purpose. To evaluate the specifications and technique properties of the new Femto LDV Z8 in creating intrastromal refractive lenticules during small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Methods. Six enucleated porcine eyeballs were equally divided into two groups (Femto LDV Z8 or VisuMax) and were randomly assigned to three experienced refractive surgeons who performed SMILE on each group. Five intraoperative time parameters and surgeons’ satisfaction on the surgical procedure were compared between two groups. Postoperatively, the roughness of the lenticule surfaces and the irregularity of edges were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and were also compared between the two groups. Results. Longer time on suction peak pressure, total laser application, and total surgery were spent in the Femto LDV Z8 group as compared with the VisuMax group. The Femto LDV Z8 group applied OCT scanning and offsetting before performing the laser procedure, which expended more time for these crucial steps. The widest range of surgeons’ satisfaction scores was found in the step of lenticule interface identification of the Femto LDV Z8 group. The roughness scores of the anterior and posterior lenticule surfaces were statistically less in the Femto LDV Z8 group than in the VisuMax group (anterior, ×180, p=0.039; anterior, ×250, p=0.337; posterior, ×180, p=0.006; and posterior, ×250, p=0.007). Conclusions. Femto LDV Z8 showed promising performances as a novel SMILE equipment for the correction of myopia. It has special and unique features for SMILE procedures, which need more learning and researching processes. With its low-energy high-frequency nJ-level laser system, the Femto LDV Z8 provided smoother lenticule surface than VisuMax.

Purpose. To evaluate the effect of laser refractive surgery on sensory eye dominance of anisometropia. Methods. A total of 156 subjects with nonanisometropic myopia and 70 subjects with anisometropic myopia were enrolled in the first part of the study. The dichoptic motion coherence threshold technique was applied to collect the normal dataset and distribution of sensory eye dominance. The second part of the study included 40 subjects with nonanisometropic myopia and 40 subjects with anisometropic myopia who received the femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Fs-LASIK). A comprehensive ophthalmologic evaluation was performed with particular attention to sensory eye dominance preoperatively and one-week and one-month postoperatively. The ocular dominance index (ODI) was applied to evaluate the subject’s overall degree of sensory ocular dominance. Visual acuity, sighting eye dominance, and stereo acuity were also accessed. Results. In experiment one, the mean ODI in the nonanisometropic group and the anisometropic group was 1.48 ± 0.63 and 1.95 ± 1.07, respectively. To evaluate ocular fundus biological changes after scleral collagen cross-linking (CXL) with riboflavin/ ultraviolet A (UVA) on rhesus monkeys in vivo by analyzing retina and choroid biological parameters. Six 3-year-old male rhesus monkeys (12 eyes) were observed in this study, with scleral CXL procedures applied on superior temporal equatorial sclera on random eyes of all rhesus. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) examination were performed before and 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after CXL. The thickness of retina and choroid and the flow density of retinal superficial vascular networks were analyzed respectively in different regions after CXL. As for retina thickness and flow density of retinal superficial vascular networks, no statistical difference was noted between CXL eyes and control eyes at 1 day, 1week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months (P>0.05). Among choroid parameters, the choroidal thickness in 1500μm temporal to the fovea center of CXL eyes revealed a significant reduction in 1 week postoperatively (P0.05). The choroidal thickness nearby crosslinked region may change temporarily following scleral CXL, and it might recover gradually after 1 month postoperatively. The vascular flow density and thickness of retina were not affected by scleral CXL. Further study should be performed to evaluate the potential adverse effects at the direct vicinity of the application site and the long-term effect of scleral CXL in clinical application.

To investigate macular choroidal thickness (CT), topographical variation, and associations between subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and age, gender, spherical equivalent (SE), and axial length (AL) in Chinese healthy mild and moderate myopia children aged 8 to 11 years. Methods. One hundred twenty eyes from 120 healthy children were studied. Children were divided into mild and moderate myopia groups. AL and CT were evaluated. CTs were measured at the fovea, and 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior to the fovea. Results. SFCT was 252.80 ± 46.95 µm in the whole population. Lumican (LUM) is a candidate gene for myopia in the MYP3 locus. In this study, a mutant lumican (L199P) transgenic mouse model was established to investigate the axial length changes and ultrastructural features of the sclera. The mouse model was established by pronuclear microinjection. Transgenic mice and wild-type B6 mice were killed at eight weeks of age. Gene expression levels of LUM and collagen type I (COL1) in the sclera were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and the protein levels were assessed by Western blot analysis. Ocular axial lengths were measured on the enucleated whole eye under a dissecting microscope. Ultrastructural features of collagen fibrils in the sclera were examined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Lumican and collagen type I were both elevated at the transcriptional and protein levels. Pathological myopia is a severe hereditary ocular disease leading to blindness. It is urgent and very important to find the pathogenesis and therapy for this disease. The purpose of the study is to analyze sequences of lumican and decorin genes with pathological myopia(PM) and control subjects to verify the relationship between lumican, decorin genes and PM in Northern Han Chinese. We collected and analyzed the blood samples of 94 adults (including 12 pedigree cases and 82 sporadic cases) with PM and 90 controls in the northern Han ethnic Chinese. Genotyping was performed by direct sequencing after polymerase chain reaction(PCR) amplification and allele frequencies were tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Univariate analysis revealed significant differences between two groups for three SNPs: rs3759223 (C→T) and rs17853500 (T→C) of the lumican gene and rs74419 (T→C) of decorin gene with (P.05). The results suggested that the sequence variants in 5′-regulatory region of lumican gene and 3'UTR of decorin gene were associated significantly with PM in Northern Han Chinese. Further studies are needed to confirm finally whether the two genes are the virulence genes of PM.

Objective • This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting natural pregnancy in patients with endometriosis (EMs) and to identify corresponding nursing measures. Understanding these factors is crucial as it may offer insights into improving fertility outcomes and enhancing the overall well-being of individuals with EMs. By identifying effective nursing measures, we hope to contribute to the development of targeted interventions that can positively impact the reproductive health of these patients. Methods • The clinical data of 147 patients with EMs who were admitted to our hospital from April 2018 to April 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The analysis included a comprehensive examination of various key factors and parameters, such as demographic information, disease severity, surgical outcomes, and postoperative complications. All patients underwent laparoscopic conservative surgery in our hospital, and the analysis was conducted over a follow-up period of 2 years after discharge. Results • The two groups exhibited significant differences in the following factors: (1) Factors with significant differences (P < .05): Age, dysmenorrhea, duration of menstrual cramps, history of uterine cavity operation, combined gynecological inflammation, r-AFS stage, postoperative GnRH-a treatment, and EFI score. (2) Factors with no significant differences (P > .05): Uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, affected side of the lesion, and postoperative ovulation-inducing drugs. (3) Protective Factors for Postoperative Natural Pregnancy in EMs Patients (P < .05): No history of dysmenorrhea, postoperative GnRH-a treatment, and high EFI score. (4) Risk factors affecting natural pregnancy after EMs patients (P < .05): Age ≥ 35 years, duration of menstrual cramps < 3 days, history of uterine cavity operations ≥ 2 times, gynecological inflammation, and r-AFS stage III-IV. Conclusions • Regarding nursing measures based on patient information, clinical nursing intervention can be carried out by strengthening the education of related knowledge such as reproductive health, maintaining the patient’s menstrual cycle, guiding patients to apply GnRH-a treatment, and designing individualized nursing care for patients with high-risk factors. Among there, continuous monitoring and follow-up care, particularly for patients with risk factors, can contribute to ongoing assessment and timely intervention. Regular check-ins with high-risk patients can facilitate early identification of potential challenges and enable the adjustment of care plans as needed. Furthermore, nurses should establish a schedule for regular check-ins with high-risk patients, facilitating ongoing communication and rapport-building.
