Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity. Sensitive sensing of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) is realized by using luminescent lanthanum-tricarboxytriphenylamine (La-TCA) nanosheets fabricated by a top-down sonication assisted strategy. The accessible Lewis base sites and electron-rich fluorophores on the surface of the La-TCA nanosheets enable them to interact with electron-deficient NACs, delivering multi-responsive behaviours (emission intensity quenching, wavelength red-shift and valley) for hydroxyl group NACs.

Enzyme/MOF composites with high activity and stability were synthesized via the pressure-induced-stimulated-aging (PISA) strategy.

High-loading Pt/C catalysts play an important role in the practical application of metal-air batteries and fuel cells because of their superior activity, high conductivity, and commercial availability. It is well known that high loadings always lead to the agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles, resulting in a loss of catalytic activity and stability; thus, it still remains a challenge to prepare high-loading Pt/C catalysts with high dispersion and small particle sizes. Here, we introduce a surfactant-assisted microwave discharge method to prepare high-loading (40 wt %) Pt/C electrocatalysts with ultrafine particle sizes (∼3.19 nm) and good dispersion. Benefitting from the high-temperature property and reducibility of carbon-induced-arc, the surfactant and Pt precursors undergo rapid decomposition, reduction, and carbonization, generating the structure of Pt@C on carbon black. The carbon derived from the surfactant can not only inhibit the agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles but also prevent the Pt core from toxication, ensuring high activity and stability of the high-loading Pt/C catalyst. When evaluated in the oxygen reduction reaction, the as-prepared Pt/C catalyst demonstrates a comparable activity and better methanol resistance to commercial Pt/C.

Fabrication of multifunctional catalysts has always been the pursuit of synthetic chemists due to their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. However, it is difficult to control multi-step reactions in one-pot, especially the spatial compartmentalization of incompatible active sites. Herein, we constructed metal-organic framework (MOF) composites which regulate the location distribution of metal nanoparticles according to the reaction path and coupled with the diffusion of substrates to achieve tandem reaction. The designed UiO-66-Pt-Au catalyst showed good activity and selectivity in hydrosilylation-hydrogenation tandem reaction, because the uniform microporous structures can control the diffusion path of reactants and intermediates, and Pt and Au nanoparticles were arranged in core-shell spatial distribution in UiO-66. By contrast, the low selectivity of catalysts with random deposition and physical mixture demonstrated the significance of artificial control to the spatial compartmentalization of active sites in tandem catalytic reactions, which provides a powerful approach for designing high-performance and multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts.

Dip-pen nanolithography is an emerging and attractive surface modification technique that has the capacity to directly and controllably write micro/nano-array patterns on diverse substrates. The superior throughput, resolution, and registration enable DPN an outstanding candidate for biological detection from the molecular level to the cellular level. Herein, we overview the technological evolution of DPN in terms of its advanced derivatives and DPN-enabled versatile sensing patterns featuring multiple compositions and structures for biosensing. Benefitting from uniform, reproducible, and large-area array patterns, DPN-based biosensors have shown high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and fast response in target analyte detection and specific cellular recognition. We anticipate that DPN-based technologies could offer great potential opportunities to fabricate multiplexed, programmable, and commercial array-based sensing biochips.

In this paper, a top-down method is used to partially hydrolyze leather to achieve a leather-based gel electrolyte, and successfully develop a leather-based all-in-one configured flexible supercapacitor. The hierarchical structure of collagen fibers effectively solves the interface problem of flexible supercapacitors, and at the same time endows the gel electrolyte with degradability and reproducibility.

Surfaces with patterned biomolecules have wide applications in biochips and biomedical diagnostics. However, most patterning methods are inapplicable to physiological conditions and incapable of creating complex structures. Here, we develop a mechanochemical lithography (MCL) method based on compressive force-triggered reactions. In this method, biomolecules containing a bioaffinity ligand and a mechanoactive group are used as mechanochemical inks (MCIs). The bioaffinity ligand facilitates concentrating MCIs from surrounding solutions to a molded surface, enabling direct and continuous printing in an aqueous environment. The mechanoactive group facilitates covalent immobilization of MCIs through force-triggered reactions, thus avoiding the broadening of printed features due to the diffusion of inks. We discovered that the ubiquitously presented amino groups in biomolecules can react with maleimide through a force-triggered Michael addition. The resulting covalent linkage is mechanically and chemically stable. As a proof-of-concept, we fabricate patterned surfaces of biotin and His-tagged proteins at nanoscale spatial resolution by MCL and verify the resulting patterns by fluorescence imaging. We further demonstrated the creation of multiplex protein patterns using this technique.

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), an alternative method of nitrogen fixation and conversion under ambient conditions, represents a promising strategy for tackling the energy-intensive issue. The design of high-performance electrocatalysts is one of the key issues to realizing the application of NRR, but most of the current catalysts rely on the use of crystalline materials, and shortcomings such as a limited number of catalytic active sites and sluggish reaction kinetics arise. The construction of metal-organic framework (MOF) films is a crucial step for integrating them into technical applications. However, due to the crystallization nature, it is difficult to grow most MOFs spontaneously or process them into films. Here, a convenient strategy is demonstrated for constructing MOF films by using modulators to achieve homogeneous assembly of MOF clusters. Small clusters in the early growth steps of MOFs can be stabilized by modulators to form fluidic precursors with good processibility. Then, simple removal of modulators will trigger the crosslinking of MOF clusters and lead to the formation of continuous films. This strategy is universal for the fabrication of several types of MOF films with large scale and controllable thickness, which can be deposited on a variety of substrates as well as can be patterned in micro/nano resolution. Additionally, versatile composite MOF films can be easily synthesized by introducing functional materials during the crosslinking process, which brings them broader application prospects.

The metal nodes, functionalized ligands, and uniform channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically utilized to regulate the catalytic properties of metal nanoparticles (MNPs). However, though the ligand functionalization could impact the properties of the metal nodes and channels, which might further regulate the catalytic activity and selectivity of MNPs, related research in the design of MNP/MOF catalysts was usually neglected. Herein, we synthesized a series of Pt@UiO-66 composites (Pt@UiO-66-NH2, Pt@UiO-66-SO3H, and Pt@UiO-66) with slightly different organic ligands, which enhanced steric hindrance and contributed to multipathway electron transfer in selective hydrogenation of linear citronellal. The selectivity toward citronellol was gradually improved along with the increased size of functional groups (hydrogen, amino groups, and sulfo groups) on organic ligands, which enhanced steric hindrance provided by channels. In addition, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements also revealed that the electronic state of Pt NPs was regulated through multipathway electron transfer from Pt NPs to metal nodes, between organic ligands and Pt NPs/metal nodes. Our research proved that the ligand functionalization altered physiochemical properties of the channels and metal nodes, further together managing the catalytic performance of Pt NPs through enhanced steric hindrance and multi-pathway electron transfer.

Shape-selective catalysis plays a key role in chemical synthesis. Porous nanomaterials with uniform pore structures are ideal supports for metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to generate efficient shape-selective catalysis. However, many commercial irregular porous nanomaterials face the challenge to realize satisfactory shape selectivity due to the lack of molecular sieving structures. Herein, we report a concept of creating shape selectivity in MNPs/porous nanomaterials through intentionally poisoning certain MNPs using suitable modifiers. The remaining MNPs within the substrates can cooperate with the channels to generate selectivity. Such a strategy not only applies to regular porous nanomaterials (such as MOFs, zeolites) but also extended to irregular porous nanomaterials (such as active carbon, P25). Potentially, the matching among different MNPs, corresponding modifiers, and porous nanomaterials makes our strategy promising in selective catalytic systems.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets and covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets as emerging porous materials nanosheets have captured increasing attention owing to their attractive properties originating from the advantages of large lateral size, ultrathin thickness, tailorable physiochemical environment, flexibility and highly accessible active sites on surface, and the applications of them have been explored in a wide range of fields. Although MOF and COF nanosheets own many similar properties, their applications in various fields show significant differences, probably due to their different compositions and bonding modes. Hence, we summarize the recent progress of MOF and COF nanosheets by comparative analysis on their advantages and limitations in synthesis and applications, providing a more profound and full-scale perspective for researchers or beginners to understand this field. Herein, the categories of preparation methods of MOF and COF nanosheets are firstly discussed, including top-down and bottom-up methods. Secondly, the applications of MOF and COF nanosheets for separation, catalysis, sensing and energy storage are summarized. Finally, based on current achievements, we put forward our personal insights into the challenges and outlooks on the synthesis, characterizations, and promising applications for future research of MOF and COF nanosheets.

Lithium-sulfur battery (Li–S) is considered as one of the new-generation rechargeable batteries with high performance because of its extremely high theoretical capacity, energy density, environmental harmony and low cost. However, low electrical and ionic conductivity of sulfur, safety concerns and parasitic reaction generated by the dissolved polysulfide species in electrolyte hinder the commercialization of Li–S battery. Herein, we report a polyhedral porous structure comprising of carbon coating metal selenide nanoparticles (CoSe2/C), which could not only host sulfur for Li-S battery owing to its porous and conductive structure, but also mitigate the shuttle phenomenon by polysulfides adsorption and catalytic acceleration of redox kinetics. As a result, a performance enhanced CoSe2/C-S electrode for Li-S battery is achieved.

Controlling the morphology of the metal-organic framework (MOF) for nanosheets is beneficial for understanding their crystal growth kinetics and useful for extending these MOF nanosheets to advanced applications, in particular for gas separation and device integration. However, synthesizing MOF nanosheets with uniform thickness or desirable size still remains challenging. Herein, we provide a crystal dissolution-growth strategy for fabricating dispersible porphyrin MOF nanosheets with lateral dimensions and nanometer thickness. A morphological transition (bulk crystals-nanosheets-bulk crystals) in Zn-TCPP was observed when controlling the crystal growth kinetics by adjusting the reaction parameters (temperature and acidity). These findings encouraged the synthesis of other types of nanosheets (Cu-TCPP, Zn-TCPP (Pd), and Cu-BDC nanosheets). Zn-TCPP (Pd) nanosheets were applied in field-effect transistors and exhibited photoresponse characteristics. This work demonstrates a new strategy for obtaining MOF nanosheets and casts a new light upon fabricating two-dimensional inorganic-organic hybrid materials with controlled thickness.

The ability of perceiving external pressures and conducting corresponding signals is one of the important functions of flexible electronics, which has been widely studied in electronic skin, prosthetics, robotics, healthcare, human-machine interfaces, etc. Pressure sensor should not be limited to the detection of unidirectional pressure. Here, a leather-based electronic pressure sensor and corresponding arrays with bidirectional sensing capability are demonstrated. The sensor/arrays consisting of two pieces of stacked leather both modified with acidified carbon nanotubes (a-CNTs) can achieve multi-level response to pressure over a broad working range and sense pulling force opposite to pressure. With polyurethane mixed with ferriferrous oxide (Fe3O4) powder being applied to their upper surface, the resistive sensor/individual units of arrays can also detect the magnetic field because of the contactless pulling force generated by the magnetized Fe3O4. Being able to sense pressure, pulling force and magnetic field, the leather-based electronic bidirectional pressure sensor and corresponding arrays with good performance not only exhibit potential for mass production and their broad application prospects, but also provide a new insight for the development of flexible electronics.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials with fascinating properties. Their widespread applications are sometimes hindered by the intrinsic instability of frameworks. However, this instability of MOFs can also be exploited for useful purposes. Herein, we report the use of MOFs as metal ion precursors for constructing functional nanocomposites by utilizing the instability of MOFs. The heterogeneous growth process of nanostructures on substrates involves the release of metal ions, nucleation on substrates, and formation of a covering structure. Specifically, the synthesized CoS with carbon nanotubes as substrates display enhanced performance in a lithium-ion battery. Such strategy not only presents a new way for exploiting the instability of MOFs but also supplies a prospect for designing versatile functional nanocomposites.

Constructing architectures with hierarchical porosity has been widely considered as the most efficient way to bypass the problems related to slow mass transfer and inaccessibility of internal space in MOFs. Now, a crystal-growth-dominated strategy is proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs). When the crystal growth is dominated by the monomer attachment, the aggregation of nonionic surfactant or polymer can be easily captured and released during the crystal growth process, resulting in the formation and ordering hierarchical pores along the radial direction. Owing to the accelerated mass diffusion and more exposed active sites of this design, HP-MOFs exhibited an enhanced catalytic efficiency in styrene oxidation.

Although zinc–air batteries (ZABs) have been extensively studied due to their advantages, there is still room for improving flexible ZABs especially by identifying suitable self-standing flexible electrode materials. Here, flexible porous nanofibers embedded with Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon (Co@NPCFs) have been synthesized to work as self-standing and binder-free electrodes in flexible ZABs. These unique nanofibers with nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon are beneficial for electron transport, oxygen capture and desorption of the OH− ions. The Co@NPCFs could provide rich active sites and exhibit good catalytic activity for both the oxygen evolution reaction and the oxygen reduction reaction. The fabricated composites with a flexible self-standing network structure can be applied directly to flexible ZABs and contact well with gel electrolyte when bending the batteries. As a result, this strategy provides a good example of flexible self-standing electrodes for ZABs and can also be extended to other flexible electric energy storage devices.
