Abstract Artificial oxide heterostructures have provided promising platforms for the exploration of emergent quantum phases with extraordinary properties. Here, we demonstrate an approach to stabilize a distinct oxygen octahedron rotation (OOR) characterized by $${a}^{-}{a}^{-}{c}^{+}$$ a − a − c + in the ultrathin LaNiO3 sublayers of the LaNiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices. Unlike the $${a}^{-}{a}^{-}{c}^{-}$$ a − a − c − OOR in the LaNiO3 bare film, the $${a}^{-}{a}^{-}{c}^{+}$$ a − a − c + OOR favors high conductivity, driving the LaNiO3 sublayer to a metallic state of ~100 K even when the layer thickness is as thin as 2 unit cells (u.c.). Simultaneously, strongly preferred occupation of $${d}_{{x}^{2}-{y}^{2}}$$ d x 2 − y 2 orbital is achieved in LaNiO3 sublayers. The largest change of occupancy is as high as 35%, observed in the 2 u.c.-thick LaNiO3 sublayers sandwiched between 4 u.c.-thick CaTiO3 sublayers. X-ray absorption spectra indicate that the $${a}^{-}{a}^{-}{c}^{+}$$ a − a − c + OOR pattern of LaNiO3 achieved in the LaNiO3/CaTiO3 heterostructures has significantly enhanced the Ni-3d/O-2p hybridization, stabilizing the metallic phase in ultrathin LaNiO3 sublayers. The present work demonstrates that modulating the mode of OOR through heteroepitaxial synthesis can modify the orbital-lattice correlations in correlated perovskite oxides, revealing hidden properties of the materials.

The environmental friendliness and high efficiency of magnetocaloric refrigeration make it a promising substitute for vapor compression refrigeration. However, the common use of heat transfer fluid in conventional passive magnetic regenerators (PMRs) and active magnetic regenerators (AMRs) makes only partial materials contribute to the regeneration process, which produces large regeneration loss and greatly limits the regeneration efficiency and refrigeration performance at high frequency. Herein, we propose a new conceptual hybrid magnetic regenerator (HMR) composed of multiple solid-state high thermal conductivity materials (HTCMs) and magnetocaloric materials (MCMs), in which both HTCM and MCM elements participate in the regeneration process. This novel working mode could greatly reduce regeneration losses caused by dead volume, pressure losses, and temperature nonuniformity in heat transfer substances to markedly improve regeneration efficiency at high working frequencies. Using the experimentally obtained adiabatic temperature change and magnetic work and with the help of finite element simulation, a maximum temperature of 26 K, a dramatically large cooling power of 8.3 kW/kg, and a maximum ideal exergy efficiency of 54.2% are achieved at the working frequency of 10 Hz for an ideal prototype device of a rotary HMR magnetocaloric refrigerator, which shows potential for achieving an integrative, advanced performance against current AMR/PMR systems.

Abstract Due to the strong interactions from multiple degrees of freedom at the interfaces, electron-correlated oxide heterostructures have provided a promising platform for creating exotic quantum states. Understanding and controlling the coupling effects at the oxide interface are prerequisites for designing emergent interfacial phases with desired functionalities. Here, we report the dimensional control of the interface coupling-induced ferromagnetic (FM) phase in perovskite-CaRuO3/infinite-layered-SrCuO2 superlattices. Structural analysis reveals the occurrence of chain-type to planar-type structural transitions for the SrCuO2 layer as the layer thickness increases. The Hall and magnetoresistance measurements indicate the appearance of an interfacial FM state in the originally paramagnetic CaRuO3 layers when the CaRuO3 layer is in proximity to the chain-type SrCuO2 layers; this superlattice has the highest Curie temperature of ~75 K and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Along with the thickness-driven structural transition of the SrCuO2 layers, the interfacial FM order gradually deteriorates and finally disappears. As shown by the X-ray absorption results, the charge transfer at the CaRuO3/chain-SrCuO2 and CaRuO3/plane-SrCuO2 interfaces are different, resulting in dimensional control of the interfacial magnetic state. The results from our study can be used to facilitate a new method to manipulate interface coupling and create emergent interfacial phases in oxide heterostructures.

Abstract Low grade waste heat accounts for ~65% of total waste heat, but conventional waste heat recovery technology exhibits low conversion efficiency for low grade waste heat recovery. Hence, we designed a thermomagnetic generator for such applications. Unlike its usual role as the coil core or big magnetic yoke in previous works, here the magnetocaloric material acts as a switch that controls the magnetic circuit. This makes it not only have the advantage of flux reversal of the pretzel-like topology, but also present a simpler design, lower magnetic stray field, and higher performance by using less magnetocaloric material than preceding devices. The effects of key structural and system parameters were studied through a combination of experiments and finite element simulations. The optimized max power density P Dmax produced by our device is significantly higher than those of other existing active thermomagnetic, thermo, and pyroelectric generators. Such high performance shows the effectiveness of our topology design of magnetic circuit with magnetocaloric switch.

Changes in land use and the resulting human practices in the land urbanization process would lead to variations in the function, intensity, and efficiency of CO2 emissions and greatly influence urban CO2 emissions. Therefore, using Chinese prefecture-level data for a time period ranging from 2003 to 2017, we systematically examine the mechanism of how land urbanization influences CO2 emissions based on land-use intensity regulation, land-use structure optimization, and land-use efficiency improvements. First, the benchmark results show that land urbanization's influence on urban CO2 emissions is significantly positive. This indicates that the consumption effect caused by land urbanization exceeds the agglomeration effect. Furthermore, the results of the nonlinear analysis using the spatial adaptive semi-parametric and semi-parametric spatial dynamic panel models show that the association between land urbanization and carbon emissions demonstrates an inverted U-shaped curve. Simultaneously, land urbanization represents a dynamic cumulative and spatial spillover effect on urban CO2 emissions. Second, a mechanism analysis reveals that effective land urbanization can promote CO2 emission reductions through efficiency improvement, structure optimization and proper control of the land-use intensity. Additionally, we analyze heterogeneity in regional differences. In the line with study findings, the central government in China should promote the optimization of territorial spatial governance, optimize energy consumption structures, make comprehensive use of its funds, tax policies, industrial development support, and market-oriented mechanisms, and further optimize the layout of urban space.

It is well known that the epitaxial strain plays a vital role in tuning the magnetic states in transition metal oxide LaCoO3 films. Here, we reported a robust long-range ferromagnetic (FM) ground state in a tensile-strained perovskite LaCoO3 film on a SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, which has a very significant attenuation when the thickness ranges from 10 to 50 nm. It is speculated that such attenuation may be caused by the appearance of the cross-hatched grain boundary, which relaxes the tensile strain around the crosshatch, resulting in the local non-FM phases. Magnetic force microscope observation reveals non-FM patterns correlated with the structural crosshatches in the strain-relaxed film even down to a temperature of 2 K and up to a magnetic field of 7 T, suggesting the phase separation origin of magnetization attenuation. Furthermore, the investigations of the temperature-dependent inverse magnetic susceptibility show a deviation from the Curie–Weiss law above the transition temperature in a 50-nm-thick LaCoO3/STO film but not in the LaCoO3/LaAlO3 film, which is ascribed to the Griffiths phase due to the crosshatch-line grain boundaries. These results demonstrated that the local strain effect due to structural defects is important to affect the ferromagnetism in strain-engineered LaCoO3 films, which may have potential implications for future oxide-based spintronics.

We report the enhancement of the thermal conductivity of neopentylglycol (NPG) by compositing it with graphene nanosheets (GPNs). Adding 50 wt% GPNs enhanced the thermal conductivity from 0.42 to 18.4 Wm−1K−1, and the barocaloric entropy change can still reach 122 Jkg−1K−1 under pressure loading of 0 → 1.0 kbar. The obtained composites demonstrated reduced thermal hysteresis, which will facilitate the large reversible entropy change. The present work thus provides a simple and feasible way to enhance the thermal conductivity of plastic crystals with a giant barocaloric effect, and promisingly accelerate the application of these materials in the solid-state refrigeration technique.

Pemphigus is a heterogeneous group of autoimmune skin disorders characterized by blistering of the skin and mucosal membranes, potentially affecting the quality of life if left unchecked. The current mainstay of treatment is systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. Nevertheless, long-term use of these drugs can easily cause infections and other life-threatening adverse reactions. Thus, currently, researchers are trying to develop new and safer therapeutic approaches. Specifically, targeted therapies to pathogenic immune pathways have been gradually introduced and used for the treatment of pemphigus or in clinical trials, such as monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody, BAFF inhibitor, BTK inhibitor, CAAR-T therapy, FcRn antagonist, and TNF-α inhibitor. In addition, IL-4Rα antibody, IL-17 blockade, mTOR pathway inhibitor, CTLA-4Ig, and p38 MAPK inhibitors are theoretically promising treatment for pemphigus. Here, we review the research progress on the mechanism of targeted therapies for pemphigus.

The discovery and study of skyrmion materials play an important role in basic frontier physics research and future information technology. The database of 196 materials, including 64 skyrmions, was established and predicted based on machine learning. A variety of intrinsic features are classified to optimize the model, and more than a dozen methods had been used to estimate the existence of skyrmion in magnetic materials, such as support vector machines, k-nearest neighbor, and ensembles of trees. It is found that magnetic materials can be more accurately divided into skyrmion and non-skyrmion classes by using the classification of electronic layer. Note that the rare earths are the key elements affecting the production of skyrmion. The accuracy and reliability of random undersampling bagged trees were 87.5% and 0.89, respectively, which have the potential to build a reliable machine learning model from small data. The existence of skyrmions in LaBaMnO is predicted by the trained model and verified by micromagnetic theory and experiments.

Incorporating magnetic nanoparticles in thermoelectric (TE) materials introduce magnetic interfaces with additional electron and phonon scattering mechanism for high TE performance. However, the influence of heterogeneous interfaces between magnetic nanoparticles and TE matrix on electronic and thermal transport remains elusive in the thermo-electric-magnetic nanocomposites. Here, using p-type TE material Bi0·3Sb1·7Te3 (BST) as matrix and magnetocaloric (MC) material La(Fe0·92Co0.08)11.9Si1.1 (LFS) nanoparticles as a second phase, TE/MC nanocomposites xLFS/BST (x = 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4%) were synthesized using spark plasma sintering method. The atomic-resolution interfacial structures demonstrate that Te vacancies originating from LFS-BST interfacial reaction decreases the hole concentration of the LFS/BST nanocomposites and enhances the Seebeck coefficient. The LFS/BST nanocomposites exhibit lower thermal conductivity due to enhanced phonon scattering by interfaces and defects. All the nanocomposites have higher ZT than BST matrix, with 0.2%LFS/BST nanocomposite achieving highest ZT = 1.11 at 380 K. At working current 1.4 A, the device fabricated using 0.2%LFS/BST nanocomposite achieves maximal cooling temperature 4.9 K, which is 58% higher than the matrix. Moreover, the MC properties are retained in all the nanocomposites, which make them a promising candidate to achieve high TE performance and dual TE/MC properties for future applications.

Sintered polycrystalline strontium hexaferrite, which is one of the most widely used permanent magnetic materials, has been applied in many areas such as electrical and mechanical transductor devices. Improving the coercivity (HcJ) of M-type strontium hexaferrite with a nominal composition SrFe12O19 (SrM) plays an essential role to adapt to many modern applications, but is limited by the process and purity of raw materials. In this work, we prepared SrM powders with different iron resources, sintering temperatures, and Fe/Sr atom ratios. It was found that using Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a Fe/Sr atom ratio of 12 at 1100 °C performed the self-composites with 70% nano-size and 30% micro-size, which had the best performance. The coercivity reaches 348.9 kA/m, which is improved compared to pure SrM obtained by other iron resources in the solid-state method. This process shows a unique formation mechanism and the resulting self-composite microstructure eventually causes enhancement in the properties, which provides a new way for high-performance hexaferrites.

The process of land urbanization may result in a great change in land use structure, land use intensity, and efficiency, which could further lead to an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite rich literature on the link between urbanization and CO2 emissions, the mechanism through which land urbanization promotes CO2 emissions reductions has not been fully investigated. To address this gap, this study theoretically and empirically explores the mechanism of land urbanization’s influence on CO2 emissions by integrating land use optimization and high-quality industrial development into a unified framework. Firstly, the theoretical mechanism analysis indicates that low-level industrial development and land use management promote the increase of CO2 emissions per unit of land at the extensive land use stage; however, high-quality industrial development and land use optimization lower CO2 emissions per unit of land at the intensive land use stage. Subsequently, a STIRPAT model and a spatial adaptive semi-parametric model are employed to verify the relationship between the land urbanization rate and total CO2 emissions. The results indicate that the land urbanization rate and total CO2 emissions present an inverted U-shaped relationship. In addition, the mediating mechanism of the advanced industrial structure, CO2 emissions per unit of GDP, and CO2 emissions per unit of land, are studied using the mediating effect model. Results indicate that CO2 emissions reduction can be achieved by promoting the advanced industrial structure, reducing CO2 emissions per unit of GDP or reducing CO2 emissions per unit of land. Ultimately, this study showed that the Chinese government may reduce CO2 emissions by promoting land use structure optimization, land use intensity regulation, land use efficiency improvement, and adjusting energy consumption structure, upgrading industrial structure, and promoting emission efficiency technologies.

Amorphous Sm–Co films with uniaxial in-plane anisotropy have great potential for application in information-storage media and spintronic materials. The most effective method to produce uniaxial in-plane anisotropy is to apply an in-plane magnetic field during deposition. However, this method inevitably requires more complex equipment. Here, we report a new way to produce uniaxial in-plane anisotropy by growing amorphous Sm–Co films onto (011)-cut single-crystal substrates in the absence of an external magnetic field. The tunable anisotropy constant, kA, is demonstrated with variation in the lattice parameter of the substrates. A kA value as high as about 3.3 × 104 J·m−3 was obtained in the amorphous Sm–Co film grown on a LaAlO3(011) substrate. Detailed analysis indicated that the preferential seeding and growth of ferromagnetic (FM) domains caused by the anisotropic strain of the substrates, along with the formed Sm–Co, Co–Co directional pair ordering, exert a substantial effect. Complex oxide heterostructures exhibit multifunctional behaviour that could be used in a range of device applications. Here, the authors observe that reconstruction at oxide perovskite/brownmillerite interfaces leads to perpendicular magnetic spin orientation, with potential use in spintronic devices.

Emissions trading schemes (ETSs) are effective measures that facilitate economic growth and carbon mitigation, especially for developing countries such as China. These schemes can further affect the cash flow, production, and investment decisions of regulated companies. However, few empirical studies have explored how ETSs promote companies’ market value. We systematically evaluate the influence of the carbon emission trading (CET) policy on companies’ market value and explore the influential mechanism. We use the data of listed companies from the Chinese stock “A” markets and employ the difference-in-difference method to account for the unobserved cause of the CET policy regarding companies’ market value. Robust benchmark regression results reveal that the CET policy promotes companies’ market value significantly. The mechanism analysis reveals that the CET policy can improve the market value of listed companies by influencing the carbon price, innovative activities, and carbon disclosure. The results of the heterogeneity analysis show that the CET policy’s impact on companies’ market value is heterogeneous in terms of marketization degree, industry, firm ownership, and different regions. We suggest that the carbon pricing mechanism, degree of market perfection, carbon disclosure policy, and carbon finance should be optimized to improve the efficiency of ETSs.

The interface reconstruction in perovskite heterostructures caused by interfacial octahedral tilt/rotation and its effects on the spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom is a very attractive topic for correlated oxides. Here, we present a systematic investigation on tensely strained (110)-LaCoO3/La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/LaCoO3 trilayers, focusing on orbital reconstruction and accompanied effects. The most remarkable finding is the reordering of the energy levels of Mn-3d orbitals at the interface: the low-lying orbital becomes dx2-y2 for sandwiched La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 rather than d3z2-r2 as expected for a bare La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film. Interlayer charge transfer via dx2-y2 orbitals is further detected as a driving force of orbital reconstruction. Due to spin–orbit coupling, the charge/orbital reconstruction produces a chain effect on the spin degree of freedom of the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layer, resulting in a dramatic spin reorientation by 90° in a film plane. The present work demonstrates how to tune macroscopic properties of correlated oxides via mutual coupling between different degrees of freedom.

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) behaviors in the materials with giant magnetocaloric effects (MCE) have been reviewed. Attentions are mainly focused on the hexagonal Ni2In-type MM'X compounds. Other MCE materials, such as La(Fe,Si)13, RCo2, and antiperovskite compounds are also simply introduced. The novel MCE and phase-transition-type NTE materials have similar physics origin though the applications are distinct. Spin-lattice coupling plays a key role for the both effect of NTE and giant MCE. Most of the giant MCE materials show abnormal lattice expansion owing to magnetic interactions, which provides a natural platform for exploring NTE materials. We anticipate that the present review can help finding more ways to regulate phase transition and dig novel NTE materials.

LaAlO _3 /SrTiO _3 -based two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has been extensively studied because of its intriguing physical properties and potential application prospect. However, seldom researches have related their extraordinary macroscopic transport phenomena to the microscopic domain structure of SrTiO _3 . This requires some unique technique like scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy. In this work, we developed a different 2DEG system at the interface of SrNbO _3 thin film and SrTiO _3 . Using only the electrical methods, we found a pronounced hysteresis behavior in the resistance versus temperature curves, marked by the appearance/disappearance of two resistance peaks in the heating/cooling process. In sharp contrast to the conventional gate effect, the resistance peak grows under positive electric biases applied to backgate with conducting interface being grounded. In addition, a weak light (0.04 mW, 405 nm) can completely eliminate the two resistance anomalies. After a systematic analysis, we attribute the resistance anomaly to the cubic-tetragonal transition of bulk SrTiO _3 and surface SrTiO _3 . The present work presents a promising demonstration to get mesoscopic information on oxide interface via transport behaviors.

Context • Severe cases of stroke can lead to cognitive impairment or even dementia. The most critical factor related to cognitive impairment after strokes is patients’ lack of understanding about or attention to their conditions. Strengthening standardized management post-stroke has become a common goal for clinical workers and patients. Objective • The study intended to explore, during post-discharge followup, the effectiveness of standardized management of patients with poststroke cognitive impairment, which could provide guidance for patients and doctors to improve patients’ follow-up plans. Design • The research team conducted a randomized controlled trial. Setting • The study took place at Huangshi Central Hospital, an Affiliated Hospital of Hubei Polytechnic University, Edong Healthcare Group, in Huangshi, Hubei, China. Participants • Participants were 112 patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment at the hospital between February 2021 and March 2023. Intervention • The research team randomly divided the participants into two groups, using a random-number-table method: (1) a control group with 56 participants who received routine management and (2) an intervention group with 56 participants who received standardized management. Outcome Measures • At baseline and 6 months postintervention, the research team measured participants’: (1) cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), (2) quality of life (QoL) using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire, and (3) self-efficacy using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). At one and 6 months postintervention, the team analyzed participants’ medication adherence using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Results • At baseline, no significant difference (P > .05) existed between the groups in the scores: (1) for cognitive function on the MMSE or MoCA, (2) for the physiological, psychological, social, and environmental domains and the total score on the WHOQOL-BREF, or (3) for selfefficacy on the GSES scores. At 6 months postintervention, the intervention group’s scores were significantly higher than those of the control group: (1) on the MMSE and MoCA (both P < .001), (2) on the four domains and total score on the WHOQOL-BREF (all P < .001), and (3) on the GSES (P < .001). At one month and six months postintervention, the intervention group’s score for medication adherence on the MMAS-8 was significantly higher than those of the control group (both P < .001). Conclusions • Standardized management for patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment provided beneficial outcomes in improving their cognitive function, QoL, self-efficacy, and medication adherence, and the research team highly recommends it for wide application in clinical practice.
