Abstract Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is primarily driven by allogeneic donor T cells associated with an altered composition of the host gut microbiome and its metabolites. The severity of aGVHD after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is not solely determined by the host and donor characteristics; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we decoded the immune cell atlas of 12 patients who underwent allo-HSCT: six with aGVHD and six with non-aGVHD. We performed a fecal microbiota (16SrRNA sequencing) analysis to investigate the fecal bacterial composition of 82 patients: 30 with aGVHD and 52 with non-aGVHD. Fecal samples from these patients were analyzed for bile acid metabolism. Through multi-omic analysis, we identified a feedback loop involving “immune cell-gut microbes-bile acid metabolites” contributing to heightened immune responses in patients with aGVHD. The dysbiosis of the gut microbiota and disruption of bile acid metabolism contributed to an exaggerated interleukin-1 mediated immune response. Our findings suggest that resistin and defensins are crucial in mitigating against aGVHD. Therefore, a comprehensive multi-omic atlas incorporating immune cells, gut microbes, and bile acid metabolites was developed in this study and used to propose novel, non-immunosuppressive approaches to prevent aGVHD. Abstract Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is related to metabolic dysfunction and is characterized by excess fat storage in the liver. Several studies have indicated that glutamine could be closely associated with lipid metabolism disturbances because of its important role in intermediary metabolism. However, the effect of glutamine supplementation on MAFLD progression remains unclear. Here, we used a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced MAFLD C57BL/6 mouse model, and glutamine was supplied in the drinking water at different time points for MAFLD prevention and reversal studies. A MAFLD prevention study was performed by feeding mice an HFD concomitant with 4% glutamine treatment for 24 weeks, whereas the MAFLD reversal study was performed based on 4% glutamine treatment for 13 weeks after feeding mice an HFD for 10 weeks. In the prevention study, glutamine treatment ameliorated serum lipid storage, hepatic lipid injury, and oxidative stress in HFD-induced obese mice, although glutamine supplementation did not affect body weight, glucose homeostasis, energy expenditure, and mitochondrial function. In the MAFLD reversal study, there were no noticeable changes in the basic physiological phenotype and hepatic lipid metabolism. In summary, glutamine might prevent, but not reverse, HFD-induced MAFLD in mice, suggesting that a cautious attitude is required regarding its use for MAFLD treatment.

Abstract Structural domains and domain walls, inherent in single crystalline perovskite oxides, can significantly influence the properties of the material and therefore must be considered as a vital part of the design of the epitaxial oxide thin films. We employ 4D-STEM combined with machine learning (ML) to comprehensively characterize domain structures at both high spatial resolution and over a significant spatial extent. Using orthorhombic LaFeO3 as a model system, we explore the application of unsupervised and supervised ML in domain mapping, which demonstrates robustness against experiment uncertainties. The results reveal the consequential formation of multiple domains due to the structural degeneracy when LaFeO3 film is grown on cubic SrTiO3. In situ annealing of the film shows the mechanism of domain coarsening that potentially links to phase transition of LaFeO3 at high temperatures. Moreover, synthesis of LaFeO3 on DyScO3 illustrates that a less symmetric orthorhombic substrate inhibits the formation of domain walls, thereby contributing to the mitigation of structural degeneracy. High fidelity of our approach also highlights the potential for the domain mapping of other complicated materials and thin films.

Abstract Background Symptomatic lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and lumbar isthmic spondylolisthesis (LIS) present significant challenges for military pilots, which may result in grounding if not effectively managed. Surgical treatment for LDH and LIS may offer a pathway to return to flight duty (RTFD), but recent data on this crucial topic is lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the RTFD outcomes among Chinese military pilots who have undergone lumbar spine surgery for symptomatic LDH and LIS. Methods A retrospective review was conducted on active-duty military pilots who underwent isolated decompressive or fusion procedures at an authorized military medical center from March 1, 2007, to March 1, 2023. The analysis utilized descriptive statistics to examine demographic, occupational, surgical, and outcome data, with a particular focus on preoperative flight status, recommended clearance by spine surgeons, and actual RTFD outcomes and time. Results Among the identified cases of active-duty military pilots with LDH or LIS treated by lumbar surgery (n = 24), 70.8% (17 of 24) consistently maintained RTFD status without encountering surgical complications or medical issues during the follow-up period. Of the seven pilots who did not RTFD, one retired within a year of surgery, two had anterior cruciate ligament injuries, three had residual radicular symptoms, and one had chronic low back pain. Excluding pilots who retired and did not RTFD for reasons unrelated to their lumbar conditions, the RTFD rate stood at 81.0% (17 of 21). The median time for recommended clearance by spine surgeons was 143.0 days (inter-quartile range, 116.5–196.0), while the median duration for actual RTFD attainment was 221.0 days (inter-quartile range, 182.0–300.0). The median follow-up post-lumbar surgery was 1.7 years (inter-quartile range, 0.4–2.9). Conclusion Most military pilots diagnosed with symptomatic LDH and LIS can continue their careers and regain active-duty flight status following lumbar spine surgery, as reflected by the high RTFD rate. Lumbar spine surgery can successfully alleviate the physical constraints associated with spinal conditions, facilitating the return of military pilots to their demanding profession.

Using recycled concrete fines (RFs) as a supplementary cementitious material in blended cement systems offers potential benefits for the construction industry. This study investigated the mechanical properties, hydration development, and microstructural evolutions of blended Portland cement systems incorporating different particle-size distributions of untreated RFs. The results highlighted that finer RFs improved the compressive strength of mortar and influenced hydration by promoting monocarbonate formation. The incorporation of RFs optimizes the pore structure in the early stage but increases porosity. RFs affected the distribution of capillary pores and created a rougher and more complex surface compared to inert mineral admixtures. Furthermore, the particle size of RFs impacted the fractal dimension of multi-scale pore sizes.

ABSTRACTPulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by progressive vascular remodeling caused by the excessive proliferation and survival of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Dual-specificity tyrosine regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) is a pleiotropic kinase involved in the regulation of multiple biological functions, including cell proliferation and survival. However, the role and underlying mechanisms of DYRK1A in PAH pathogenesis remain unclear. We found that DYRK1A was upregulated in PASMCs in response to hypoxia, both in vivo and in vitro. Inhibition of DYRK1A by harmine significantly attenuated hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary artery remodeling. Mechanistically, we found that DYRK1A promoted pulmonary arterial remodeling by enhancing the proliferation and survival of PASMCs through activating the STAT3/Pim-1/NFAT pathway, because STAT3 gain-of-function via adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (AAV2) carrying the constitutively active form of STAT3 (STAT3C) nearly abolished the protective effect of harmine on PAH. Collectively, our results reveal a significant role for DYRK1A in pulmonary arterial remodeling and suggest it as a drug target with translational potential for the treatment of PAH.

Adenine nucleotide translocator 4 (Ant4), an ATP/ADP transporter expressed in the early phases of spermatogenesis, plays a crucial role in male fertility. While Ant4 loss causes early arrest of meiosis and increased apoptosis of spermatogenic cells in male mice, its other potential functions in male fertility remain unexplored. Here, we utilized Ant4 knockout mice to delineate the effects of Ant4-deficiency on male reproduction. Our observations demonstrated that Ant4-deficiency led to infertility and impaired testicular development, which was further investigated by evaluating testicular oxidative stress, autophagy, and inflammation. Specifically, the loss of Ant4 led to an imbalance of oxidation and antioxidants. Significant ultrastructural alterations were identified in the testicular tissues of Ant4-deficient mice, including swelling of mitochondria, loss of cristae, and accumulation of autophagosomes. Our results also showed that autophagic flux and AKT-AMPK-mTOR signaling pathway were affected in Ant4-deficient mice. Moreover, Ant4 loss increased the expression of pro-inflammatory factors. Overall, our findings underscored the importance of Ant4 in regulating oxidative stress, autophagy, and inflammation in testicular tissues. Taken together, these insights provided a nuanced understanding of the significance of Ant4 in testicular development.

Conventional chiral metasurfaces are constrained by predetermined functionalities and have limited versatility. To address these constraints, we propose a novel chirality-switchable terahertz (THz) metasurface with integrated heating control circuits tailored for spin-selective anomalous reflection, leveraging the phase-change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). The reversible and abrupt insulator-to-metal phase transition feature of VO2 is exploited to facilitate a chiral meta-atom with spin-selectivity capabilities. By employing the Pancharatnam–Berry phase principle, complete 2π reflection phase coverage is achieved by adjusting the orientation of the chiral structure. At the resonant frequency of 0.137 THz, the designed metasurface achieves selective absorption of a circularly polarized wave corresponding to the state of the VO2 patches. Concurrently, it reflects the circularly polarized wave of the opposite chirality anomalously at an angle of 28.4° while maintaining its handedness. This chirality-switchable THz metasurface exhibits promising potential across various applications, including wireless communication data capacity enlargement, polarization modulation, and chirality detection.

Abstract Studies of laser-driven strong field processes subjected to a (quasi-)static field have been mainly confined to theory. Here we provide an experimental realization by introducing a bichromatic approach for high harmonic generation (HHG) in a dielectric that combines an intense 70 femtosecond duration mid-infrared driving field with a weak 2 picosecond period terahertz (THz) dressing field. We address the physics underlying the THz field induced static symmetry breaking and its consequences on the efficient production/suppression of even-/odd-order harmonics, and demonstrate the ability to probe the HHG dynamics via the modulation of the harmonic distribution. Moreover, we report a delay-dependent even-order harmonic frequency shift that is proportional to the time derivative of the THz field. This suggests a limitation of the static symmetry breaking interpretation and implies that the resultant attosecond bursts are aperiodic, thus providing a frequency domain probe of attosecond transients while opening opportunities in precise attosecond pulse shaping.

Dioscorea alata L. anthocyanins (DAC) are natural compounds found in plants and have shown potential health benefits. The objective of this investigation was to assess the impact of anthocyanins sourced from Dioscorea alata L. on the growth, carcass traits, antioxidant potential, and immune response of Hainan black goats. In this study, 30 three-month-old Hainan black goats (with a weight of 11.30 ± 0.82 kg) were selected and randomly divided into two groups, with 15 goats in each group. During the 60-day experiment, the control group (CON) and the treatment group (DAC) were, respectively, supplemented with 0 and 40 mg/kg BW of DAC in the basal diet. The results showed that DAC had no significant impact on the growth performance and body characteristics of Hainan black goats (p > 0.05). Objective: Electrospun nanofibers exhibit potential as scaffolds for articular cartilage tissue regeneration. This study aimed to fabricate electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL)/silk fibroin (SF) composite nanofiber scaffolds and to explore performance of the scaffolds for articular chondrocyte regeneration.Methods: By altering material composition and preparation methods, three types of nanofiber scaffolds were effectively fabricated, including randomly oriented PCL (RPCL) nanofiber scaffold, randomly oriented PCL/SF (RPCL/SF) nanofiber scaffold, and aligned PCL/SF (APCL/SF) nanofiber scaffold. Physiochemical analyses were performed to determine mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity of the nanofiber scaffolds. In vitro studies were conducted to investigate performance of the scaffolds on articular chondrocyte proliferation, gene expression and glycosaminoglycan secretion. Cytoskeleton staining was used to observe the arrangement of chondrocytes along the direction of the fibers and their elongation along the fiber arrangement.Results: The physicochemical analysis demonstrated that the APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold exhibited improved mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity compared to the RPCL and RPCL/SF nanofiber scaffolds. Furthermore, the in vitro cell culture studies confirmed that the APCL/SF nanofibers could significantly promote articular chondrocyte proliferation, type II collagen (COL-II) gene expression, and glycosaminoglycan secretion compared to the RPCL and RPCL/SF nanofiber scaffolds. Additionally, cytoskeletal staining displayed that the APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold promoted the elongation of articular chondrocytes in the direction of parallel fiber alignment.Conclusion: The APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold exhibited promising potential as a composite scaffold for articular cartilage regeneration.

BackgroundNeck pain (NP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder among fighter pilots and has become a rising concern due to its detrimental impact on military combat effectiveness. The occurrence of NP is influenced by a variety of factors, but less attention has been paid to the association of NP with demographic, occupational, and cervical sagittal characteristics in this group. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of NP in Chinese male fighter pilots using a questionnaire and cervical sagittal measurements.MethodsDemographic and flight-related data, as well as musculoskeletal pain information, were gathered from Chinese male fighter pilots via a self-report questionnaire. Cervical sagittal parameters were measured and subtypes were classified using standardized lateral cervical radiographs. Differences in various factors between the case and control groups were analyzed using t-tests or chi-square tests. Binary logistic regressions were conducted to explore potential risk factors contributing to NP. Predictors were presented as crude odds ratios (CORs) and adjusted odds ratios (AORs), along with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs).ResultsA total of 185 male fighter pilots were included in this cross-sectional study. This review provides a comprehensive overview of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D-printing (3DP) applications in the pharmaceutical industry, with a particular focus on the critical role of polymer selection. By providing insights into how material properties influence the 3DP process and the quality of the final product, this review aims to contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between polymers and pharmaceutical 3DP. As 3DP technologies are increasingly integrated into pharmaceutical sciences, this review contributes insights into the nuanced process of polymer selection, serving mainly as a foundational guide for researchers and formulators new to the subject seeking to harness the full potential of pharmaceutical 3DP by understanding the physicochemical properties, roles, and functions of used polymers in 3D-printed dosage forms and medical devices.

The organic modification of montmorillonite was successfully achieved using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide under facile conditions. The modified montmorillonite was subsequently used for the fabrication of montmorillonite-induced nanopore-rich cement paste (MNCP), and the shrinkage behavior and fundamental performance of MNCP were also investigated. The results indicate that alkali cations on a montmorillonite layer surface were exchanged by using CTAB under 80 °C, successfully achieving the organic modification of montmorillonite. As a pore-forming agent, the modified montmorillonite caused a reduction in shrinkage: the 28-day autogenous shrinkage at a design density of 400 kg/m3 and 800 kg/m3 was reduced to 2.05 mm/m and 0.24 mm/m, and the highest reduction percentages during the 28-day drying shrinkage were 68.1% and 62.2%, respectively. The enlarged interlamellar pores and hydrophobic effects caused by the organic modification of montmorillonite aided this process. Organic-modified montmorillonite had a minor influence on dry density and thermal conductivity and could contribute to an enhancement of strength in MNCP.

BackgroundSurgically treated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries may be a waivable condition and allow return to full flight status, but waivers are based on expert opinion rather than recent published data. The purpose of this study was to evaluate return to flight after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in male military aircrews with ACL injuries and to identify factors that affect flight clearance.MethodA single-center retrospective review was conducted by the authors for all active-duty aircrew who underwent ACLR at an authorized military medical center from January 2010 to December 2019. Demographic characteristics, occupational information, surgical data, and flight readiness evaluation outcomes were collected. Based on the final medical evaluation, subjects were divided into a qualified group (N = 64) and a disqualified group (N = 9), and the difference in data collected between the two groups was then analyzed to identify factors affecting flight clearance.ResultsA total of 73 patients underwent successful ACLR with a mean age of 31.6 ± 5.6 years. Non-contact injury was the main type of ACL injury, accounting for 84.9% of the total injuries. 55 cases (75.3%) occurred during daily sports activities and 18 (24.7%) during military training. 64 of the 73 crewmembers (87.7%) were able to return to flight at their last follow-up evaluation. The preoperative interval time (PIT) was significantly less in the qualified group than in the disqualified group (P = 0.002). Patients who underwent ACLR within three months were more likely to return to flying than those who underwent the procedure three months later (97.4% vs. 76.5%, P = 0.010). The incidence of failure to return to flight duty was significantly higher in aircrews with ACL injuries combined with meniscal injuries than in aircrews with isolated ACL injuries (21.4% vs. 0.0%, P = 0.017).ConclusionACLR appears to be safe for military aircrew suffering ACL injuries with or without meniscal injury, and return to flight status is the most likely outcome for the majority of postoperative pilots. Prolonged PIT, PIT > 3 months, and ACL injury combined with meniscus injury had a negative impact on postoperative flight readiness.

Harmonic measurements have been used extensively in ferromagnetic/heavy metal heterostructures to characterize the magnetization dynamic; however, it has remained unclear about whether such techniques could be applied to antiferromagnetic devices. High-molecular-weight hypromellose (HPMC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) are widely known, extended-release polymers. Conventional high-molecular-weight HPMCs are preferred in extended-release applications but not widely used in twin-screw melt granulation due to processability difficulties at low operating temperatures and potential drug degradation if high processing temperatures are used. Conversely, high-molecular-weight grade HPC (Klucel®) can be used in melt granulation processes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the processability and dissolution behavior of HPC GXF ((Klucel® GXF) and a recently introduced type of hot-melt extrudable HPMC (Affinisol®) in extended-release metformin hydrochloride formulations using twin-screw melt granulation. Powder blends were prepared with 75% w/w metformin HCl and 25% w/w polymeric binder. Blends were granulated at processing temperatures of 160, 140, 120 and 100 °C. HPMC HME 4M (Affinisol® 4M) provided a fine powder, indicating minimum granulation at processing temperatures lower than 160 °C, and the tablets obtained with these granules capped during tableting. In contrast, acceptable tablets could be obtained with HPC GXF at all processing temperatures. Rheological studies including capillary rheometry to measure steady shear rate viscosity, and rotational rheometry to obtain time and temperature superposition data, showed that HPC GXF had a greater thermoplasticity than HPMC HME 4M, which made granulation possible with HPC GXF at low temperatures. Tablets compressed with granules obtained at 160 °C with both binders showed comparable dissolution profiles. High-molecular-weight HPC GXF provided a better processability at low temperatures and adequate tablet strength for the melt granulation of metformin HCl.

Seizures in rodent models that are induced by lithium-pilocarpine mimic human seizures in a highly isomorphic manner. The hippocampus is a brain region that generates and spreads seizures. In order to understand the early phases of seizure events occurring in the hippocampus, global protein expression levels in the hippocampus on day 1 and day 3 were analyzed in lithium-pilocarpine induced acute epileptic rat models using a tandem mass tag-based proteomic approach. Our results showed that differentially expressed proteins were likely to be enhanced rather than prohibited in modulating seizure activity on days 1 and 3 in lithium-pilocarpine induced seizure rats. The differentially regulated proteins differed on days 1 and 3 in the seizure rats, indicating that different molecules and pathways are involved in seizure events occurring from day 1 to day 3 following lithium-pilocarpine administration. In regard to subcellular distribution, the results suggest that post-seizure cellular function in the hippocampus is possibly regulated in a differential manner on seizure progression. Gene ontology annotation results showed that, on day 1 following lithium-pilocarpine administration, it is likely necessary to regulate macromolecular complex assembly, and cell death, while on day 3, it may be necessary to modulate protein metabolic process, cytoplasm, and protein binding. Protein metabolic process rather than macromolecular complex assembly and cell death were affected on day 3 following lithium-pilocarpine administration. The extracellular matrix, receptors, and the constitution of plasma membranes were altered most strongly in the development of seizure events. In a KEGG pathway enrichment cluster analysis, the signaling pathways identified were relevant to sustained angiogenesis and evading apoptosis, and complement and coagulation cascades. On day 3, pathways relevant to Huntington’s disease, and tumor necrosis factor signaling were most prevalent. These results suggest that seizure events occurring in day 1 modulate macromolecular complex assembly and cell death, and in day 3 modulate biological protein metabolic process. In summary, our study found limited evidence for ongoing seizure events in the hippocampus of lithium-pilocarpine induced animal models; nevertheless, evaluating the global differential expression of proteins and their impacts on bio-function may offer new perspectives for studying epileptogenesis in the future.

IntroductionEpidemiological studies investigating the association between carnitine and breast cancer are scarce.Materials and MethodsThis 1:1 age-matched retrospective case-control study identified 991 female breast cancer cases and 991 female controls without breast cancer using pathological testing. We used targeted metabolomics technology to measure 16 types of whole blood carnitine compounds, such as free carnitine (C0) and octadecanoylcarnitine (C18).ResultsThe average age for cases and controls was approximately 50 ± 8.7 years. After adjusting for covariates, each standard deviation (SD) increase in malonylcarnitine (C3DC; OR 0.91; 95% CI 0.83-1.00), decenoylcarnitine (C10:1; OR 0.87; 95% CI 0.79-0.96), and decadienoylcarnitine (C10:2; OR 0.90; 95% CI 0.82-0.99) level was associated with decreased odds of breast cancer. However, higher butyrylcarnitine (C4) levels were associated with increased odds of breast cancer (OR 1.12; 95% CI 1.02-1.23). No statistically significant relationship was noted between other carnitine compounds and breast cancer. The false discovery rates for C3DC, C4, C10:1 and C10:2 were 0.172, 0.120, 0.064 and 0.139, respectively.ConclusionsHigher levels of C3DC, C10:1, and C10:2 were protective factors for breast cancer, whereas increased C4 levels were a risk factor for the disease.

The purple tubers of Dioscorea alata L. have been found to contain a variety of bioactive chemical components, including anthocyanins, which make it significant to investigate the pre-protective effects of Dioscorea alata L. and its crude extracts on cells prior to oxidative stress. To establish a suitable oxidative damage model, an injured model of IPEC-J2 cells was created using H2O2 as the oxidant. Specifically, when the concentration of H2O2 was 120 μmol/L and the injured time was 8 h, the survival rate of cells decreased to approximately 70%, and the cells exhibited a noticeable oxidative stress reaction. Moreover, the crude extracts of Dioscorea alata L. demonstrated beneficial pre-protective effects on IPEC-J2 cells by increasing the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and catalase (CAT) activities, augmenting the expression of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and its genes, reducing the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and its expression of genes, and promoting the expression of glucose transporter SGLT1 gene while reducing that of GULT2 gene, thereby facilitating the entry of anthocyanins into cells. In addition, the 50 μg/mL crude extracts effectively inhibited the phosphorylation of IκB and the p65 protein, thus reducing cellular oxidative stress. Given these findings, Dioscorea alata L. can be considered a natural antioxidant for practical breeding and production purposes, with an optimal concentration of crude extracts in this experiment being 50 μg/mL.

To evaluate the fermentation properties and bacterial community composition of mulberry leaves when ensiled with smooth bromegrass, and the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum inoculation on the mixed silage of mulberry leaves and smooth bromegrass, mulberry leaves were mixed with smooth bromegrass at ratios of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30 and 60:40, and ensiled for 60 d with and without L. plantarum inoculant. The results showed that the sole fermentation of mulberry leaves failed to achieve optimum fermentation quality. Silage with a mulberry leaf ratio of 80% performed better fermentation quality compared with other non-inoculated groups, indicated by lower pH value, adequate lactic acid accumulation, and enriched proportion of Lactobacillus in the bacterial community. L. plantarum inoculation dramatically improved fermentation quality of mulberry leaf silage compared with the non-inoculated control. However, the fermentation quality of the inoculated silage decreased along with the reduction in the ratio of mulberry leaves. In conclusion, L. plantarum inoculation has the capability to improve the silage quality of mulberry leaves. Combined ensiling with smooth bromegrass could also aid in improving silage quality of mulberry leaves, with the optimum ratio of mulberry leaves being 80%.

This study assessed the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (ZZU203), cellulase-producing Bacillus methylotrophicus (CB), or their combination (ZZU203_CB) on the fermentation parameters of alfalfa after 10 and 60 days of ensiling. Additionally, the bacterial community compositions were analyzed using absolute quantification 16S-seq (AQS). The results showed that CB silage displayed a higher lactic acid (LA) concentration at 10 d, a higher abundance of Lactobacillus, and lower abundance of Pediococcus, Enterococcus, and Weissella than those in the control (CK) silage. Compared with CK silage, the ZZU203 silage increased LA concentration, fructose and rhamnose concentrations, and the abundance of Lactobacillus, and decreased pH value, ammoniacal nitrogen, acetic acid, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber concentrations, and the abundance of Pediococcus, Enterococcus, Weissella, Hafnia, and Garciella after 60 days of ensiling. In addition, ZZU203 and ZZU203_CB silage had a similar silage quality and bacterial community, while the inoculation of ZZU203_CB significantly promoted LA accumulation and the numbers of Lactobacillus at 10 d compared with ZZU203 silage. Therefore, ZZU203 or a combination of ZZU203 and CB can be used as potential silage additives to improve the silage quality of alfalfa.

Understanding the spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films is fundamental for designing novel devices based on AFM magnon transport. Here, we study the magnon dynamics in thin films of AFM S=5/2 α-Fe_{2}O_{3} by combining resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, Anderson impurity model plus dynamical mean-field theory, and Heisenberg spin model. Below 100 meV, we observe the thickness-independent (down to 15 nm) acoustic single-magnon mode. At higher energies (100–500 meV), an unexpected sequence of equally spaced, optical modes is resolved and ascribed to ΔS_{z}=1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 magnetic excitations corresponding to multiple, noninteracting magnons. Our study unveils the energy, character, and momentum dependence of single and multimagnons in α-Fe_{2}O_{3} thin films, with impact on AFM magnon transport and its related phenomena. From a broader perspective, we generalize the use of L-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering as a multispin-excitation probe up to ΔS_{z}=2S. Our analysis identifies the spin-orbital mixing in the valence shell as the key element for accessing excitations beyond ΔS_{z}=1, and up to, e.g., ΔS_{z}=5. At the same time, we elucidate the novel origin of the spin excitations beyond the ΔS_{z}=2, emphasizing the key role played by the crystal lattice as a reservoir of angular momentum that complements the quanta carried by the absorbed and emitted photons.

The aim of this study was to investigate effects of wilting and Lactobacillus plantarum inoculation on the dynamics of the fermentation products, residual non-structural carbohydrates, and bacterial communities in alfalfa silage. Fresh and wilted alfalfa were ensiled with and without L. plantarum for 10, 30, 60, and 90 days. A high-throughput sequencing method for absolute quantification of 16S rRNA was adopted to determine the bacterial community composition at different ensiling periods. For the wilted silage, the bacterial community, pH value, and ammonia nitrogen concentration remained stable in the silage at 30 days. L. plantarum inoculation accelerated lactic acid fermentation and altered the predominant genus in the wilted silage as compared with the non-inoculated group. For the non-wilted group, fast consumption of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSCs) was observed at 10 days in the non-inoculated silage along with rapid growth of undesirable Hafnia. L. plantarum inoculation inhibited growth of Hafnia at 10 days in the non-wilted silage. Clostridia fermentation occurred in the non-wilted silage at 90 days, as indicated by an increased pH, formation of butyric acid (BA), and apparent abundance of genera belonging to Clostridia. L. plantarum inoculation inhibited BA accumulation and growth of Garciella in the non-wilted silage at 90 days as compared with the non-wilted silage without inoculation, but had little effect on the growth of Clostridium sensu stricto. Overall, the high moisture content of the non-wilted alfalfa silage led to rapid consumption of WSCs and growth of harmful microorganisms at the early stage of ensiling, resulting in poor fermentation quality. Wilting and L. plantarum inoculation both improved fermentation quality and inhibited the growth of spoilage microorganisms in alfalfa silage, while L. plantarum inoculation alone failed to achieve optimum fermentation quality of non-wilted alfalfa silage.

Noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn has attracted wide interest as it is a candidate for Weyl semimetal. Here, we report the observation of topological Hall like signals in Mn3Sn/Pt bilayers grown on Al2O3(0001). X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy results confirm the high epitaxial quality of the c-axis-oriented Mn3Sn films. The detected topological Hall resistivity shows a broad temperature range from 210 to 365 K by tuning the thickness of Mn3Sn from 3 to 15 nm. Compared with previously reported topological Hall effects in Mn3Sn at temperatures below 50 K, the observed high-temperature topological Hall signal is likely due to the stabilization of topological spin textures enabled by the strong spin–orbit coupling of the Pt overlayer and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction at the Mn3Sn/Pt interface.

Relative quantification 16S-seq (RQS) has drawn deeper insights into bacterial community compositions in silage. However, it provides no information on dynamics of the total amount of bacterial DNA through the ensiling process and across different treatments. In this study, bacterial compositions in alfalfa silage with and without Lactobacillus plantarum inoculation after 10 and 60days of ensiling were investigated using absolute quantification 16S-seq (AQS), and bacterial composition and its interaction with fermentation properties of silage indicated by AQS and RQS were compared. Variation in total bacterial DNA amounts across different treatments and ensiling periods was illustrated by AQS. AQS indicated higher bacterial richness indices and closer correlations of these indices with fermentation properties than RQS via spearman’s correlation analyses, as well as more taxa with significance on bacterial abundance via lefse analyses. In conclusion, AQS effectively illustrated the dynamics of bacterial communities during the ensiling process.

The forthcoming sixth generation (6G) communication network is envisioned to provide ultra-fast data transmission and ubiquitous wireless connectivity. The terahertz (THz) spectrum, with higher frequency and wider bandwidth, offers great potential for 6G wireless technologies. However, the THz links suffers from high loss and line-of-sight connectivity. To overcome these challenges, a cost-effective method to dynamically optimize the transmission path using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is widely proposed. RIS is constructed by embedding active elements into passive metasurfaces, which is an artificially designed periodic structure. However, the active elements (e.g., PIN diodes) used for 5G RIS are impractical for 6G RIS due to the cutoff frequency limitation and higher loss at THz frequencies. As such, various tuning elements have been explored to fill this THz gap between radio waves and infrared light. The focus of this review is on THz RISs with the potential to assist 6G communication functionalities including pixel-level amplitude modulation and dynamic beam manipulation. By reviewing a wide range of tuning mechanisms, including electronic approaches (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transistors, Schottky diodes, high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), and graphene), optical approaches (photoactive semiconductor materials), phase-change materials (vanadium dioxide, chalcogenides, and liquid crystals), as well as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), this review summarizes recent developments in THz RISs in support of 6G communication links and discusses future research directions in this field.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can produce many kinds of antifungal substances, which have been widely proven to have antifungal activity. In this study, 359 strains of LAB were screened for antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger (A. niger) using the 96-well microtiter plate method, and three showed strong activity. Of these, ZZUA493 showed a broad-spectrum antifungal ability against A. niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Trichoderma longibrachiatum, Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium graminearum. ZZUA493 was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum. Protease treatment, the removal of hydrogen peroxide with catalase and heat treatment had no effect on the antifungal activity of the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of ZZUA493; organic acids produced by ZZUA493 appeared to have an important role in fungal growth inhibition. The contents of lactic acid, acetic acid and phenyllactic acid in the CFS tended to be stable at 48 h, and amounted to 28.5, 15.5 and 0.075 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, adding ZZUA493, as an ingredient during their preparation, prolonged the shelf life of Chinese steamed buns. Overall, ZZUA493 appears to have good potential as a fungal inhibitor for food preservation.

Hard‐magnetic soft active materials (hmSAMs), embedding hard‐magnetic particles in soft polymeric matrices, have attracted a great number of research interests due to their fast‐transforming, untethered control, as well as excellent programmability. However, the current direct‐ink‐write (DIW) printing‐based fabrication of hmSAM parts and structures only permits programmable magnetic direction with a constant magnetic density. Also, the existing designs rely on the brute‐force approach to generate the assignment of magnetization direction distribution, which can only produce intuitional deformations. These two factors greatly limit the design space and the application potentials of hmSAMs. Herein, a “voxel‐encoding DIW printing” method to program both the magnetic density and direction distributions during hmSAM printing is introduced. The voxel‐encoding DIW printing is then integrated with an evolutionary algorithm (EA)‐based design strategy to achieve the desired magnetic actuation and motion with complex geometry variations and curvature distributions. With the new EA‐guided voxel‐encoding DIW printing technique, the functional hmSAMs that produce complicated shape morphing with desired curvature distributions for advanced applications such as biomimetic motions are demonstrated. These demonstrations indicate that the proposed EA‐guided voxel‐encoding DIW printing method significantly broadens the application potentials of hmSAMs.

The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) involved in improving fermentation quality of naturally ensiled alfalfa under poor conditions. High-moisture wilted alfalfa was ensiled without inoculants (CK) or with inoculation of two L. plantarum additives (LPI and LPII). The pH and fermentation products of silage were determined after 30 and 90 days of ensiling. Additionally, the bacterial community compositions were analyzed. The L. plantarum inoculants significantly promoted lactic acid accumulation, and Lactobacillus abundance for both periods. At 90 days, silage in CK exhibited a high pH, a loss in dry matter, and a high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen. The inoculations of L. plantarum significantly inhibited the growth of Clostridia, and reduced ammoniacal nitrogen concentration in silage (P < 0.05). Thus, inoculation with L. plantarum improved the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage and inhibited the growth of spoilage microorganisms, and further delayed spoilage of alfalfa silage under adverse ensiling conditions.

To investigate the effects of lactic acid bacterial (LAB) inoculants and vacuuming on the fermentation quality and bacterial community, alfalfas were ensiled with or without a commercial LAB YX or Lactobacillus plantarum strain ZZUA493 for 10, 30, 60, and 90 days while undergoing either vacuum (V) or nonvacuum (NV) treatment. At 90 days, analysis of the microbial community by high-throughput sequencing was performed, and contents of aflatoxin B1 and deoxynivalenol (DON) mycotoxins in alfalfa silage were determined. In all inoculated alfalfa silage, irrespective of V or NV treatment, lactic acid (LA) content increased, pH (p < 0.05), and ammonia nitrogen (p < 0.05) content decreased, and no butyric acid was detected. Lactobacillus or Pediococcus became the dominant genus, and the abundance of Garciella decreased in alfalfa silage with the addition of either inoculant. The LAB inoculants YX and ZZUA493 helped reduce the mycotoxin content in alfalfa silage. The abundance of Garciella in the control and DON content in all alfalfa silage groups were higher (p < 0.05) in NV than V. In summary, LAB inoculants and vacuuming had a positive influence on alfalfa silage quality, and LAB inoculants were effective in reducing mycotoxins in silage alfalfa.

The properties of high harmonic generation from solids are not fully understood. Here, Wang et al. control the photo-carriers injected in a semiconductor to distinguish interband and intraband contributions to different high harmonics, and investigate the wavelength dependence of the harmonics.

The aim of this study was to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of fermentation parameters and the bacterial community during the ensiling of high-moisture alfalfa. A commercial lactic acid bacteria (YX) inoculant was used as an additive. After 15 and 30 days of ensiling, the control silage (CK) exhibited a high pH and a high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N); Enterobacter and Hafnia-Obesumbacterium were the dominant genera. At 60 d, the pH value and the concentration of NH3-N in CK silage increased compared with 15 and 30 d, propionic acid and butyric acid (BA) were detected, and Garciella had the highest abundance in the bacterial community. Compared with CK silage, inoculation of YX significantly promoted lactic acid and acetic acid accumulation and reduced pH and BA formation, did not significantly reduce the concentration of NH3-N except at 60 d, and significantly promoted the abundance of Lactobacillus and decreased the abundance of Garciella and Anaerosporobacter, but did not significantly inhibit the growth of Enterobacter and Hafnia-Obesumbacterium. In conclusion, high-moisture alfalfa naturally ensiled is prone to rot. Adding YX can delay the process of silage spoilage by inhibiting the growth of undesirable microorganisms to a certain extent.

Owing to their conductivity, low-damping metallic ferromagnets are preferred to insulating ferromagnets in charge-based spintronic devices, but are not yet well developed. Here the authors achieve low magnetic damping in CoFe epitaxial films which is comparable to conventional insulating ferromagnetic YIG films.

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga widely used for research in photosynthesis, cell cycle regulation, ciliary biogenesis, and other physiological processes. Sterile cultures are needed for these studies, but contamination from bacteria and fungi occurs frequently. Although the One-shot Solution cocktail consisting of carbendazim, ampicillin, and cefotaxime has been developed for removing these contaminants from algal cultures, it is not always effective. Here we report two new antimicrobial cocktails for treating mixed bacterial and fungal contamination of Chlamydomonas cultures. A combination of the bactericide nalidixic acid with one of two fungicides, azoxystrobin or tebuconazole, was more effective than the One-shot Solution cocktail. In some of our tests, we find that alternating use of our new cocktails with One-shot Solution is needed to remove obstinate contaminants.

The interaction of death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) with the 2B subunit (GluN2B) C-terminus of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of depression and is considered a potential target for the structure-based discovery of new antidepressants. However, the 3D structures of C-terminus residues 1290⁻1310 of GluN2B (GluN2B-CT1290-1310) remain elusive and the interaction between GluN2B-CT1290-1310 and DAPK1 is unknown. In this study, the mechanism of interaction between DAPK1 and GluN2B-CT1290-1310 was predicted by computational simulation methods including protein⁻peptide docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Based on the equilibrated MD trajectory, the total binding free energy between GluN2B-CT1290-1310 and DAPK1 was computed by the mechanics generalized born surface area (MM/GBSA) approach. The simulation results showed that hydrophobic, van der Waals, and electrostatic interactions are responsible for the binding of GluN2B-CT1290⁻1310/DAPK1. Moreover, through per-residue free energy decomposition and in silico alanine scanning analysis, hotspot residues between GluN2B-CT1290-1310 and DAPK1 interface were identified. In conclusion, this work predicted the binding mode and quantitatively characterized the protein⁻peptide interface, which will aid in the discovery of novel drugs targeting the GluN2B-CT1290-1310 and DAPK1 interface.

Objective: Electrospun nanofibers exhibit potential as scaffolds for articular cartilage tissue regeneration. This study aimed to fabricate electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL)/silk fibroin (SF) composite nanofiber scaffolds and to explore performance of the scaffolds for articular chondrocyte regeneration. Methods: By altering material composition and preparation methods, three types of nanofiber scaffolds were effectively fabricated, including randomly oriented PCL (RPCL) nanofiber scaffold, randomly oriented PCL/SF (RPCL/SF) nanofiber scaffold, and aligned PCL/SF (APCL/SF) nanofiber scaffold. Physiochemical analyses were performed to determine mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity of the nanofiber scaffolds. In vitro studies were conducted to investigate performance of the scaffolds on articular chondrocyte proliferation, gene expression and glycosaminoglycan secretion. Cytoskeleton staining was used to observe the arrangement of chondrocytes along the direction of the fibers and their elongation along the fiber arrangement. Results: The physicochemical analysis demonstrated that the APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold exhibited improved mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity compared to the RPCL and RPCL/SF nanofiber scaffolds. Furthermore, the in vitro cell culture studies confirmed that the APCL/SF nanofibers could significantly promote articular chondrocyte proliferation, type II collagen (COL-II) gene expression, and glycosaminoglycan secretion compared to the RPCL and RPCL/SF nanofiber scaffolds. Additionally, cytoskeletal staining displayed that the APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold promoted the elongation of articular chondrocytes in the direction of parallel fiber alignment. Conclusion: The APCL/SF nanofiber scaffold exhibited promising potential as a composite scaffold for articular cartilage regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compressed Sensing (CS) has been shown to be an effective technique for improving the resolution of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging and reducing the hardware requirements of radar systems. In this paper, our focus is on the Lp (0 < p < 1) model, which is a well-known non-convex and non-Lipschitz regularization model in the field of compressed sensing. In this study, we propose a novel algorithm, namely the Accelerated Iterative Support Shrinking with Full Linearization (AISSFL) algorithm, which aims to solve the Lp regularization model for ISAR imaging. The AISSFL algorithm draws inspiration from the Majorization-Minimization (MM) iteration algorithm and integrates the principles of support shrinkage and Nestrove’s acceleration technique. The algorithm employed in this study demonstrates simplicity and efficiency. Numerical experiments demonstrate that AISSFL performs well in the field of ISAR imaging [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
