We study the current-voltage characteristics of Fe(Se,Te) thin films deposited on CaF$_2$ substrates in form of nanostrips (width $w\sim\lambda$, $\lambda$ the London penetration length). In view of a possible application of these materials to superconductive electronics and micro-electronics we focus on transport properties in small magnetic field, the one generated by the bias current. From the characteristics taken at different temperatures we derive estimates for the pinning potential $U$ and the pinning potential range $\delta$. Since the sample lines are very narrow, the classical creep flow model provides a sufficiently accurate interpretation of the data only when the attractive interaction between magnetic flux lines of opposite sign is taken into account. The observed voltages and the induced detriment of the critical current of the nanostrips are compatible with the presence of few tens of magnetic field lines at the equilibrium and a strongly inhomogeneous current density distribution. In particular, we argue that the sharp corners defining the bridge geometry represent points of easy magnetic flux lines injection. We report an infrared spectroscopy study of a 200 nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ film grown on LaAlO$_3$ with T$_c$=13.7 K. We analyze the 20 K normal state absolute reflectance R$_N$ measured over a broad infrared range and the reflectance ratio R$_S$/R$_N$, R$_S$ being the superconducting state reflectance, measured at 6 K in the terahertz range down to 12 cm$^{-1}$. We show that the normal state model conductivity is given by two Drude components, one of which much broader and intense than the other. In the superconducting state, we find that a gap $\Delta$=37$\pm$3 cm$^{-1}$ opens up in the narrow Drude band only, while the broad Drude band results to be ungapped, at least in the explored spectral range. We report on the isotropic pinning obtained in epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2 (001) substrate. High critical current density values larger than 1 MA/cm2 in self field in liquid helium are reached together with a very weak dependence on the magnetic field and a complete isotropy. Analysis through Transmission Electron Microscopy evidences the presence of defects looking like lattice disorder at a very small scale, between 5 and 20 nm, which are thought to be responsible for such isotropic behavior in contrast to what observed on SrTiO3, where defects parallel to the c-axis enhance pinning in that direction

A novel method to prepare bulk Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) samples is presented, based on a melting process and a subsequent annealing treatment. With respect to the standard sintering technique, it produces much more homogeneous and denser samples, characterized by large and well interconnected grains. The resulting samples exhibit optimal critical temperature values, sharp resistive and magnetic transitions, large magnetic hysteresis loops and high upper critical fields are observed. Interestingly, the global critical current density is much enhanced as compared to the values reported in literature for bulk samples of the same 11 family, reaching about 103 A/cm2 at zero field at 4.2 K as assessed by magnetic, transport and magneto-optical techniques. Even more importantly, its field dependence turns out to be very weak, such that at \mu_{0}H = 7 T it is suppressed only by a factor \sim2., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

The microstructural evolution throughout the first order tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition is analyzed by powder diffraction analysis for two different systems belonging to the class of compounds referred to as 1111 oxy-pnictides: (La1-yYy)FeAsO and SmFeAs(O1-xFx). Both systems are characterized by a similar behaviour: on cooling microstrain along the tetragonal hh0 direction takes place and increases as the temperature is decreased. Just above the structural transition microstrain reaches its maximum value and then is abruptly suppressed by symmetry breaking. No volume discontinuity throughout the first order transition is observed and a groupsubgroup relationship holds between the tetragonal and the orthorhombic structures, thus suggesting that orbital ordering drives symmetry breaking. Microstrain reflects a distribution of lattice parameters in the tetragonal phase and explains the occurrence of anisotropic properties commonly attributed to nematic correlations; in this scenario the nematic behaviour is induced by the tendency towards ordering of Fe orbitals.

The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

We report measurements of Hc2(T) up to 85 Tesla on Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 single crystals and FeSe1-xTex films tuned by doping and strain. We observed an Hc2 enhancement by nearly 25 T at 30 K for the optimally-doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 as compared to the previous results and extraordinarily high slopes dHc2/dT = 250-500 T/K near Tc in FeSe1-xTex indicating an almost complete suppression of the orbital pair-breaking. Theoretical analysis of Hc2(T) in FeSe1-xTex and the optimally doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 predicts an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for H//ab and T < 3-10 K, and shows that Hc2 in multiband Fe based superconductor can be enhanced by doping and strain much more effectively than by the conventional way of increasing disorder., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

In this work we investigate the Ru substituted LaFeAsO compound, by studying the magnetotransport behaviour and its relationship with the band structure, in different regimes of temperature, magnetic field and Ru content. In particular we analyse the magnetoresistance of LaFe1-xRuxAsO (0 <= x <= 0.6) samples with the support of ab initio calculations and we find out that in the whole series: (i) the transport is dominated by electron bands only; (ii) the magnetoresistance exhibits distinctive features related to the presence of Dirac cones; indeed, ab initio calculations confirm the presence of anisotropic Dirac cones in the band structure; (iii) the low temperature mobility is exceptionally high and reaches 18.6 m2/(Vs) in the Ru-free sample at T=2K, in the extreme limit of a single Landau level occupied in the Dirac cones; (iv) the mobility drops abruptly above 10K-15K; (v) the disorder has a very weak effect on the band mobilities and on the transport properties; (vi) there exists a correlation between the temperature ranges of Dirac cones and SDW carrier condensation. These findings may be of crucial importance in the investigation of the pairing mechanism in the F-doped superconducting La(Fe,Ru)As(O,F) compounds related to this series of parent compounds., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

We report on measurements of the superconducting properties of FeSe05Te05 thin films grown on lanthanum aluminate. The films have high transition temperatures (above 19 K) and sharp resistive transitions in fields up to 15 T. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field and the irreversibility lines are steep and anisotropic, as recently reported for single crystals. The critical current densities, assessed by magnetization measurements in a vector VSM, were found to be well above 10^9 Am-2 at low temperatures. In all samples, the critical current as a function of field orientation has a maximum, when the field is oriented parallel to the film surface. The maximum indicates the presence of correlated pinning centers. A minimum occurs in three films, when the field is applied perpendicular to the film plane. In the forth film, instead, a local maximum caused by c-axis correlated pinning centers was found at this orientation. The irradiation of two films with fast neutrons did not change the properties drastically, where a maximum enhancement of the critical current by a factor of two was found.

We study the effect of synthesis temperature on the phase formation in nano(n)-SiC added bulk MgB2 superconductor. In particular we study: lattice parameters, amount of carbon (C) substitution, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), irreversibility field (Hirr), critical current density (Jc), upper critical field (Hc2) and flux pinning. Samples of MgB2+(n-SiC)x with x=0.0, 0.05 & 0.10 were prepared at four different synthesis temperatures i.e. 850, 800, 750, and 700oC with the same heating rate as 10oC/min. We found 750oC as the optimal synthesis temperature for n-SiC doping in bulk MgB2 in order to get the best superconducting performance in terms of Jc, Hc2 and Hirr. Carbon (C) substitution enhances the Hc2 while the low temperature synthesis is responsible for the improvement in Jc due to the smaller grain size, defects and nano-inclusion induced by C incorporation into MgB2 matrix, which is corroborated by elaborative HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) results. In this work we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the structural, transport and superconducting properties of Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) polycrystalline samples as a function of Ru content (x) ranging from 0 to 1. The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x<0.5) where superconducting and normal state properties are strongly affected by disorder induced by Ru substitution; the Ru-rich phase (x>0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. Here the lack of magnetic features and related spin fluctuations may be the cause for the suppression of superconductivity., Comment: Accepted on Physical Review B

The nuclear and magnetic structure of Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20) compounds was analyzed between 2 K and 300 K by means of Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. Samples with x < 0.075 undergo a tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition at low temperature, whose critical temperature decreases with increasing Se content; this structural transition is strictly coupled to a long range antiferromagnetic ordering at the Fe site. Both the transition to a monoclinic phase and the long range antiferromagnetism are suppressed for 0.10 < x < 0.20. The onset of the structural and of the magnetic transition remains coincident with the increase of Se substitution. The low temperature monoclinic crystal structure has been revised. Superconductivity arises for x > 0.05, therefore a significant region where superconductivity and long range antiferromagnetism coexist is present in the pseudo-binary FeTe - FeSe phase diagram., Comment: 33 pages, 4 tables, 13 figures

High purity epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films with different thickness were grown by Pulsed Laser Ablation on different substrates. By varying the film thickness, Tc up to 21K were observed, significantly larger than the bulk value. Structural analyses indicated that the a axis changes significantly with the film thickness and is linearly related to the Tc. The latter result indicates the important role of the compressive strain in enhancing Tc. Tc is also related to both the Fe-(Se,Te) bond length and angle, suggesting the possibility of further enhancement.

We present transport and superconducting properties - namely resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck effect, thermal conductivity, upper critical field - of two different families of Fe-based superconductors, which can be viewed in many respects as end members: SmFeAs(O1-xFx) with the largest Tc and the largest anisotropy and Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex), with the largest Hc2, the lowest Tc and the lowest anisotropy. In the case of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) series, we find that a single band description allows to extract an approximated estimation of band parameters such as carrier density and mobility from experimental data, although the behaviour of Seebeck effect as a function of doping demonstrates that a multiband description would be more appropriate. On the contrary, experimental data of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series exhibit a strongly compensated behaviour, which can be described only within a multiband model. In the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series, the role of the excess Fe, tuned by Se stoichiometry, is found to be twofold: it dopes electrons in the system and it introduces localized magnetic moments, responsible for Kondo like scattering and likely pair-breaking of Cooper pairs. Hence, excess Fe plays a crucial role also in determining superconducting properties such as the Tc and the upper critical field Bc2. The huge Bc2 values of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) samples are described by a dirty limit law, opposed to the clean limit behaviour of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) samples. Hence, magnetic scattering by excess Fe seems to drive the system in the dirty regime, but its detrimental pairbreaking role seems not to be as severe as predicted by theory. This issue has yet to be clarified, addressing the more fundamental issue of the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.

The MgB2 superconductor has already demonstrated its applicative potential, in particular for DC applications such as MRI magnets, thanks to the low costs of the raw materials and to its simple production process. However further efforts have still to be made in order to broaden its employment also towards the AC applications such as SFCL, motors, transformers. The main issues are related to the reduction of the AC losses. Some of these can be faced by obtaining multifilamentary conductors with a large number of very fine filaments and, in this context, the powders granulometry can play a crucial role. We have prepared MgB2 starting powders with different granulometries and by the ex-situ P.I.T method we have realized multifilamentary wires with a number of filaments up to 361 and an average size of each filament lowered down to 30 microns. In particular we have studied the relationship between grain and filament size in terms of transport properties and show that the optimization of this ratio is possible in order to obtain suitable conductors for AC industrial applications.

The structural, magnetic and resistive properties of (La1-yYy)FeAsO compounds (y = 0.10, 0.20, 0.30) have been investigated by means of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction as well as by resistivity measurements. The temperatures at which the structural transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic and the magnetic ordering take place progressively reduce by similar amounts with increasing Y substitution on account of the progressive chemical pressure increase. We propose that the structural transition could be originated by a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion involving the alignment of the fully occupied Fe 3d(z2) orbitals in the Fe plane along the y axis, leading to the branching of the cell parameters a and b. The magnetic structure develops after the occurrence of the structural transition, but before its completion., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures

Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend on the level of doping, the supposed order parameter symmetry is s wave, thus in principle not so detrimental to current transmission across grain boundaries. From the application point of view, the main efforts are still devoted to investigate the superconducting properties, to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic behaviours and to compare the different families in order to identify which one is the fittest for the quest for better and more practical superconductors. The 1111 family shows the highest Tc, huge but also the most anisotropic upper critical field and in-field, fan-shaped resistive transitions reminiscent of those of cuprates, while the 122 family is much less anisotropic with sharper resistive transitions as in low temperature superconductors, but with about half the Tc of the 1111 compounds. An overview of the main superconducting properties relevant to applications will be presented. Upper critical field, electronic anisotropy parameter, intragranular and intergranular critical current density will be discussed and compared, where possible, across the Fe-based superconductor families.

We report about muSR measurements on SmFeAsO1-xFx which helped us to identify the signature of diluted ferromagnetic inclusions, ubiquitous in the iron pnictides. These impurities are characterized by a Curie temperature close to room temperature and they seem responsible for a non negligible magnetic relaxation of the implanted muons, that should not be confused with intrinsic pnictide properties., Comment: The International Conference on FeAs High Tc Superconducting Multilayers and Related Phenomena (Superstripes2008), Rome, Italy, December 9-13, 2008

The possibility of multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity is explored in oriented V3Si thin films by means of reflectance and transmittance measurements at terahertz frequencies. The temperature dependence of the transmittance spectra in the normal state gives evidence of two bands contributing to the film conductivity. This outcome is consistent with electronic structure calculations performed within density functional theory. On this basis, we performed a detailed data analysis and found that all optical data can be consistently accounted for within a two-band framework, with the presence of two optical gaps in the superconducting state corresponding to 2D=kTc values close to 1.8 and 3.8., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures

In this paper the magnetic behaviour of undoped and 15% F doped SmFeAsO (Sm-1111) and LaFeAsO (La-1111) samples is presented and discussed. Magnetization measurements are not a simple tool to use for the characterisation of the new family of Fe-based superconductors because magnetic impurities can be easily formed during the preparation procedure and may affect the magnetic signal. In spite of this problem bulk magnetization measurements, properly treated, may give very useful information. In the undoped samples we gathered the main aspects of the physical behavior of the 1111 phase, i.e. the onset of the Spin Density Wave (SDW), the antiferromagnetic ordering at the Sm sublattice and the susceptibility increase with increasing temperature above the SDW temperature, and, in addition, we were able to estimate the Pauli contribution to susceptibility and therein the Wilson ratio both for LaFeAsO and SmFeAsO compounds, and the amplitude of the jump at the SDW temperature. In the doped samples, while the presence of magnetic signals due to impurities is dominating in the normal state, the superconducting behavior may be clearly observed and studied. In particular, in the Sm-1111 superconducting sample the coexistence-competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering of the Sm ions was clearly observed., Comment: in press on Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

We present a study concerning the partial substitution of yttrium at the lanthanum site of the undoped LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.85F0.15 compounds. We prepared samples with a nominal yttrium content up to 70% producing simultaneous shrinkage of both the a- and c-lattice parameters by 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively. The chemical pressure provided by the partial substitution with this smaller ion size causes a lowering of the spin density wave temperature in the undoped compounds, as well as an increase of the superconducting transition temperatures in the doped ones. The 15% fluorine-doped samples reach a maximum critical temperature of 40.2 K for the 50% yttrium substitution. Comparison with literature data indicates that chemical pressure cannot be the only mechanism which tunes drastically both TSDW and Tc in 1111 compounds. Our data suggest that structural disorder induced by the partial substitution in the La site or by doping could play an important role as well.

We present uSR investigations on SmFeAsO_1-xF_x showing coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity only in a very narrow F-doping range. The sharp crossover between the two types of order is similar to that observed in LaFeAsO_1-xF_x, suggesting a common behavior for the 1111 pnictides. The analysis of the muon asymmetry demonstrates that the coexistence must be nanoscopic, i.e. the two phases must be finely interspersed over a typical length-scale of few nm. In this regime both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures collapse to very low values. Our data suggest a competition between the two order parameters, Comment: new title; fig3 changed; new inset in fig4; little changes in abstract, introduction and conclusions. We measure magnetotransport of F doped SmFeAsO samples up to 28T and we extract the upper critical fields, using different criteria. In order to circumvent the problem of criterion-dependence Hc2 values, we suggest a thermodynamic estimation of the upper critical field slope dHc2/dT based on the analysis of conductivity fluctuations in the critical regime. A high field slope as large as -12T/K is thus extracted for the optimally doped sample. We find evidence of a two-dimensional lowest Landau level (LLL) scaling for applied fields larger than mu_0H_LLL=8T. Finally, we estimate the coherence length values and we observe that they progressively increase with decreasing Tc. In all cases, the coherence length values along the c axis are smaller than the interplanar distance, confirming the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in this compound., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys.Rev.B

We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an increase of the metallic character on cooling consistent with electron doping, even though at room temperature values of all the properties nearly overlaps with those of SmFeAsO. However, with temperature decrease all anomalies related to the SDW instability are missed and the superconducting transition occurs. This suggests that doping breaks abruptly the symmetries of the Fermi surface inhibiting the SDW formation in favor of the superconducting transition, with no substantial changes in the density of states or in the effective mass., Comment: Submitted to SUST

The crystal structure of SmFeAsO has been investigated by means of Rietveld refinement of high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data collected at 300 K and 100 K. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group at 300 K and in the orthorhombic Cmma space group at 100 K; attempts to refine the low temperature data in the monoclinic P112/n space group diverged. Ex-situ Powder-In-Tube MgB2 tapes prepared with ball-milled, undoped powders showed a strong enhancement of the irreversibility field H*, the upper critical field Hc2 and the critical current density Jc(H) together with the suppression of the anisotropy of all of these quantities. Jc reached 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T, with an irreversibility field of about 14 T at 4.2 K, and Hc2 of 9 T at 25 K, high values for not-doped MgB2. The enhanced Jc and H* values are associated with significant grain refinement produced by milling of the MgB2 powder, which enhances grain boundary pinning, although at the same time also reducing the connectivity from about 12% to 8%. Although enhanced pinning and diminished connectivity are in opposition, the overall influence of ball milling on Jc is positive because the increased density of grains with a size comparable with the mean free path produces strong electron scattering that substantially increases Hc2, especially Hc2 perpendicular to the Mg and B planes., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to J. In DC and AC practical applications of MgB2 superconducting wires an important role is represented by the material sheath which has to provide, among other things, a suitable electrical and thermal stabilization. A way to obtain a large enough amount of low resistivity material in to the conductor architecture is to use it as external sheath. In this paper we study ex-situ multifilamentary MgB2 wires using oxide-dispersion-strengthened copper (GlidCop) as external sheath in order to reach a good compromise between critical current density and thermal properties. We prepared three GlidCop samples differing by the content of dispersed sub-microscopic Al2O3 particles. We characterized the superconducting and thermal properties and we showed that the good thermal conductivity together the good mechanical properties and a reasonable critical current density make of GlidCop composite wire a useful conductor for applications where high thermal conductivity is request at temperature above 30K, such as Superconducting-FCL., Comment: Submitted to Supercond. In this paper the magnetic behaviour of SmFeAsO and SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) samples is presented and discussed. Molar susceptibility of SmFeAsO exhibits a local peak at T around 140K due to the establishment of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments in Fe-As layers. This feature has already been observed with different techniques, and frequently ascribed to the onset of a Spin Density Wave (SDW). At TN around 6K another peak, which we attribute to the establishment of antiferromagnetic ordering of Sm ion sublattice, is observed. Furthermore, a temperature independent signal (Pauli paramagnetism, Landau and core diamagnetism...) is also present in the magnetic behaviour of this sample. In SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) the antiferromagnetic ordering in Fe-As plane is suppressed and superconductivity occurs at T = 52 K, whereas the antiferromagnetic ordering of Sm ions at low temperature persists, leading to the coexistence and competition between superconducting and magnetic orderings. Above the transition temperature, after the subtraction of the Sm ion sublattice paramagnetic contribution and of the temperature independent contribution to the experimental susceptibility data, a Curie-Weiss behaviour for Fe is observed, with a magnetic moment of 1.4 Bohr magneton., Comment: submitted to Physical Review B

Recent investigations have shown that the first proposed explanations of the disagreement between experimental and theoretical value of isotope coefficient in MgB2 need to be reconsidered. Considering that in samples with residual resistivity of few mu-Ohm cm critical temperature variations produced by disorder effects can be comparable with variations due to the isotopic effect, we adopt a procedure in evaluating the B isotope coefficient which take account of these effects, obtaining a value which is in agreement with previous results and then confirming that there is something still unclear in the physics of MgB2., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures Title has been changed A statement has been added in page 7 of the pdf file "Finally we would..." SmFeAsO and the isostructural superconducting SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) samples were prepared. Characterization by means of Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data, scanning electron microscope observation, transmission electron microscope analysis, resistivity and magnetization measurements were carried out. Sintering treatment strongly improves the grain connectivity, but, on the other hand, induces a competition between the thermodynamic stability of the oxy-pnictide and Sm2O3, hence worsening the purity of the sample. In the pristine sample both magnetization and resistivity measurements clearly indicate that two different sources of magnetism are present: the former related to Fe ordering at 140 K and the latter due to the Sm ions that orders antiferromagnetically at low temperature. The feature at 140 K disappears in the F-substituted sample and, at low temperatures a superconducting transition appears. The optical response of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ has been studied in the 0.7-4 THz range on films with very low impurity level. The effect of the high-energy $\sigma$-gap is observed in the ratio $R_S/R_N$ between the normal and superconducting state reflectance, while in a neutron irradiated film with a slightly higher impurity level mainly the effect of the $\pi$-gap is evident as reported in previous experiments. At terahertz frequencies, the electrodynamic of MgB$_2$ can be well described by the two-band parallel conductivity model and is dominated by the $\pi$-bands when the impurity level is only slightly higher than that of an ultra-clean sample., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report on the microwave surface resistance of two polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples; one consists of pristine material, the other has been irradiated at very high neutron fluence. It has already been reported that in the strongly irradiated sample the two gaps merge into a single value. The mw surface resistance has been measured in the linear regime as a function of the temperature and the DC magnetic field, at increasing and decreasing fields. The results obtained in the strongly irradiated sample are quite well justified in the framework of a generalized Coffey and Clem model, in which we take into account the field distribution inside the sample due to the critical state. The results obtained in the pristine sample show several anomalies, especially at low temperatures, which cannot be justified in the framework of standard models for the fluxon dynamics. Only at temperatures near Tc and for magnetic fields greater than 0.5Hc2(T) the experimental data can quantitatively be accounted for by the Coffey and Clem model, provided that the upper-critical-field anisotropy is taken into due account., Comment: RevTeX, 13 pages with 10 eps figures, in press on EPJB

We report magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on MgB2 and the corresponding full account from ab-initio calculations; we suggest that this combination can be a useful tool to probe electron- phonon coupling. We obtain good quantitative agreement between high field measurements on neutron irradiated epitaxial thin films and calculations within Bloch-Boltzmann transport theory over a wide range of magnetic fields (0-28 T) and temperatures (40-300 K), and as a function of the field orientation. The crossovers between in-plane and out-of-plane MR, experimentally observed as a function of either disorder or temperature are well reproduced indicating that disorder and interaction with phonons strongly affect the scattering rate of s-carriers., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

The effects of neutron irradiation on normal state and superconducting properties of epitaxial magnesium diboride thin films are studied up to fluences of 1020 cm-2. All the properties of the films change systematically upon irradiation. Critical temperature is suppressed and, at the highest fluence, no superconducting transition is observed down to 1.8 K. Residual resistivity progressively increases from 1 to 190 microohmcm; c axis expands and then saturates at the highest damage level. We discuss the mechanism of damage through the comparison with other damage procedures. The normal state magnetoresistivity of selected samples measured up to high fields (28 and 45T) allows to determine unambiguously the scattering rates in each band; the crossover between the clean and dirty limit in each sample can be monitored. This set of samples, with controlled amount of disorder, is suitable to study the puzzling problem of critical field in magnesium diboride thin films. The measured critical field values are extremely high (of the order of 50T in the parallel direction at low fluences) and turns out to be rather independent on the experimental resistivity, at least at low fluences. A series of MgB$_2$ thin films systematically disordered by neutron irradiation have been studied by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. The c-axis orientation of the films allowed a reliable determination of local density of state of the $\pi$ band. With increasing disorder, the conductance peak moves towards higher voltages and becomes lower and broader, indicating a monotonic increase of the $\pi$ gap and of the broadening parameter. Recent experimental data of anisotropic magnetoresistivity measured in MgB2 films have shown an intriguing behaviour: the angular dependence of magnetoresistivity changes dramatically with temperature and disorder. In order to explain such phenomenology, in this work, we extend our previous analyses on multiband transverse magnetoresistivity in magnesium diboride, by calculating its analytic expression, assuming a constant anisotropic Fermi surface mass tensor. The calculation is done for arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the crystalline axes and for the current density either perpendicular or parallel to the magnetic field. This approach allows to extract quite univocally the values of the scattering times in the s- and p- bands by fitting experimental data with a simple analytic expression. We also extend the analysis to the magnetoresistivity of polycrystalline samples, with an arbitrary angle between the current density and the magnetic field, taking into account the anisotropy of each randomly oriented grain. Thereby, we propose magnetoresistivity as a very powerful characterization tool to explore the effect of disorder by irradiation or selective doping as well as of phonon scattering in each one of the two types of bands, in single crystals and polycrystalline samples, which is a crucial issue in the study of magnesium diboride., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. in press on The European Physical Journal B

We studied the influence of the disorder introduced in polycrystalline MgB2 samples by neutron irradiation. To circumvent self shielding effects due to the strong interaction between thermal neutrons and 10B we employed isotopically enriched 11B which contains 40 times less 10B than natural B. The comparison of electrical and structural properties of different series of samples irradiated in different neutron sources, also using Cd shields, allowed us to conclude that, despite the low 10B content, the main damage mechanisms are caused by thermal neutrons, whereas fast neutrons play a minor role. Irradiation leads to an improvement in both upper critical field and critical current density for an exposure level in the range 1-2x1018 cm-2. With increasing fluence the superconducting properties are depressed. An in-depth analysis of the critical field and current density behaviour has been carried out to identify what scattering and pinning mechanisms come into play. We report specific heat measurements in neutron irradiated MgB2 samples, for which the critical temperature has been suppressed down to 8.5 K, but the superconducting transition remains extremely sharp, indicative of a defect structure extremely homogeneous. Our results demonstrate that the two-gap feature is evident in the temperature range above 21 K, while the single-gap superconductivity is well established as a bulk property not associated to local disorder fluctuations when Tc is decreased down to 11 K., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we present normal state magnetoresistivity data of magnesium diboride epitaxial thin films with different levels of disorder, measured at 42K in magnetic fields up to 45 Tesla. Disorder was introduced in a controlled way either by means of neutron irradiation or by carbon doping. From a quantitative analysis of the magnetoresistivity curves with the magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the plane of the film, we extract the ratio of the scattering times in p- and s-bands. We demonstrate that the undoped unirradiated thin film has p scattering times smaller than s ones; upon irradiation, both bands become increasingly more disordered; eventually the highly irradiated sample (neutron fluence 7.7X1017 cm-2) and the C-doped sample have comparable scattering times in the two types of bands. This description of the effect of disorder in the two kinds of bands on transport is consistent with the residual resistivity values and with the temperature dependence of the resistivity., Comment: 19 pages, 3 tables, 2 figures

We study the effect of neutron irradiation on the critical current density Jc of isotopically pure polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples. For fluences in the range 1017-1018 cm-2, Jc is enhanced and its dependence on magnetic field is significantly improved: we demonstrate that, in this regime, point-like pinning centers are effectively introduced in the system proportionally to the neutron fluence. Instead, for larger fluences, a strong suppression of the critical temperature accompanied by a decrease of both the upper critical field Bc2 and Jc is found., Comment: 13 pages, 3 igures

We prepared a series of Mg_{1-x}(AlLi)_{x}B_2 samples with 0≤x≤0.45 in order to compensate with Li the electron doping induced by Al. Structural characterization by means of neutron and X-ray diffraction confirms that Li enters the MgB2 structure even though in an amount less than nominal one. We performed susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat measurements. Vibrational properties were also investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. We compare these results with those obtained on a homologous series of Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 samples. Upper critical fields of several magnesium diboride thin films were measured up to 28 T at the Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory (GHMFL) in Grenoble and up to 60 T at the Laboratoire National des Champs Magnetiques Pulses (LNCMP) in Toulouse. The samples were prepared both by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and hybrid physical chemical vapour deposition (HPCVD) technique; they have critical temperatures between 29 and 39 K and normal state resistivities between 5 and 250 μohmcm; one of them has been intentionally doped with carbon. The measured critical fields were exceptionally high; we obtained the record value of 52 T at 4.2 K in the parallel orientation. In contrast with the BCS predictions, no saturation in Hc2 at low temperature was observed. Furthermore, films with a wide range of resistivity values showed similar critical fields, suggesting that in a two band system resistivity and Hc2 are not trivially linked. The high Hc2 values seem to be related with the expanded c-axis. In this letter we present the effect of neutron irradiation up to fluences of 3.9 1019 n/cm2 on the superconducting properties of MgB2. In order to obtain a disorder structure homogeneously distributed, the experiment was carried out on bulk samples prepared with the 11B isotope. Up to fluences of 1018 n/cm2 the critical temperature is slightly diminished (36 K) and the superconducting properties are significantly improved; the upper critical field is increased from 13.5 T to 20.3 T at 12 K and the irreversibility field is doubled at 5 K. For larger neutron fluences the critical temperature is suppressed down to 12 K and the superconducting properties come out strongly degraded., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Structural and superconducting properties of magnesium diboride thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on zirconium diboride buffer layers were studied. We demonstrate that the ZrB2 layer is compatible with the MgB2 two step deposition process. Synchrotron radiation measurements, in particular anomalous diffraction measurements, allowed to separate MgB2 peaks from ZrB2 ones and revealed that both layers have a single in plane orientation with a sharp interface between them. Moreover, the buffer layer avoids oxygen contamination from the sapphire substrate. The critical temperature of this film is near 37.6 K and the upper critical field measured at Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory up to 20.3 T is comparable with the highest ones reported in literature., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Supercond. In this Letter, the study of the effect of Al substitution on the upper critical field, Bc2, in AlxMg1-xB2 samples is presented. We find a straightforward correlation between Bc2 and the sigma-band gap, Delta_sigma, evaluated by point-contact measurements. Up to x=0.2 Bc2 can be well described within a clean limit model and its decrease with x is directly related to the suppression of Delta_sigma. For larger doping we observed the crossover to the dirty regime driven mostly by the strong decrease of Delta_sigma rather than by the increase of the sigma-band scattering rate, Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigated the effect of alloying on the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ in 12 $MgB_2$ films, in which disorder was introduced by growth, carbon doping or He-ion irradiation, finding a significant $H_{c2}$ enhancement in C-alloyed films, and an anomalous upward curvature of $H_{c2}(T)$. Record high values of $H_{c2}^{\perp}(4.2) \simeq 35T$ and $H_{c2}\|(4.2) \simeq 51T$ were observed perpendicular and parallel to the ab plane, respectively. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}(T)$ is described well by a theory of dirty two-gap superconductivity. Extrapolation of the experimental data to T=0 suggests that $H_{c2}\|(0)$ approaches the paramagnetic limit of $\sim 70T$.

We have studied the upper critical field, Bc2, in poly-crystalline MgB2 samples in which disorder was varied in a controlled way to carry selectively p and s bands from clean to dirty limit. We have found that the clean regime survives when p bands are dirty and s bands are midway between clean and dirty. In this framework we can explain the anomalous behaviour of Al doped samples, in which Bc2 decreases as doping increases., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures
