8. A New Efficient Stochastic Energy Management Technique for Interconnected AC Microgrids

Abstract

Cooperating interconnected microgrids with the Distribution System Operation (DSO) can lead to an improvement in terms of operation and reliability. This paper investigates the optimal operation and scheduling of interconnected microgrids highly penetrated by renewable energy resources (DERs). Moreover, an efficient stochastic framework based on the Unscented Transform (UT) method is proposed to model uncertainties associated with the hourly market price, hourly load demand and DERs output power. Prior to the energy management, a newly developed linearization technique is employed to linearize nodal equations extracted from the AC power flow. The proposed stochastic problem is formulated as a single-objective optimization problem minimizing the interconnected AC MGs cost function. In order to validate the proposed technique, a modified IEEE 69 bus network is studied as the test case.

Abstract

Environmental, economical and technical benefits of photovoltaic (PV) systems make them to be used in many countries. The main characteristic of PV systems is the fluctuations of their output power. Hence, high penetration of PV systems into electric network could be detrimental to overall system performance. Furthermore, the fluctuations in the output power of PV systems make it difficult to predict their output, and to consider them in generation planning of the units. The main objective of this paper is to propose a hybrid method which can be used to control and reduce the power fluctuations generated from large grid- connected PV systems. The proposed method focuses on using a suitable storage battery along with curtailment of the generated power by operating the PV system below the maximum power point (MPP) and deployment of a diesel generator. These methods are analyzed to investigate the impacts of implementing them on the economical benefits that the PV system owner could gain. To maximize the revenues, an optimization problem is solved.

Abstract

This presentation is an Evidence-based Practice. The research describes the current status of the affirmative sustainable support for scholars in energy technologies (ASSSET) program and explores its potential impact on the graduate and retention of engineering students. This NSF SSTEM funded project provides scholarships and educational support to low-income, academically talented students entering and pursuing engineering studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Its main objective is to increase the retention and graduation in fields related to energy technology. It supports students in the chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial technology and petroleum engineering. The ASSSET program was developed with the plan of incorporating evidenced-based practices such as a cohort model, mentoring, field experiences, internships with local industry, workshops, and seminars to support a senior research project. Each ASSSET scholar has a matched faculty mentor from their engineering discipline who will be with them from the time they enter the program until graduation. The focus is on energy technologies as this will help the United States to remain competitive in the global market. Energy is a highly interdisciplinary field, and it can be studied from different engineering perspectives. The project is in its inaugural year and currently supports 12 students including eight freshmen, three sophomores and one junior. This research delineates the process by which the cohort of students was selected, describes the educational and mentoring opportunities, and discusses the programs impact on students in this first year. The paper will also discuss the potential for retention and quality of education for the ASSSET scholars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
