À partir de l’étude, élargie à l’ensemble du terroir, de l’habitat fortifié construit vers 1003 et abandonné vers 1040 avant d’être englouti sous les eaux du lac de Paladru, M. Colardelle, E. Verdel et une quarantaine d’autres chercheurs apportent à l’archéologie et à l’histoire médiévale une contribution essentielle. Outre les données fondamentales sur l’architecture en bois, l’artisanat les loisirs, l’alimentation, l’agriculture etc., dont les témoins ont été remarquablement conservés, cette recherche aboutit à une lecture nouvelle des causes de la « révolution de l’an Mil », époque charnière de l’histoire de l’Occident. Exceptionnelle par les méthodes d’investigation qu’elle associe (fouille stratigraphique en milieu subaquatique, sciences de l’environnement, archéométrie) et par les résultats obtenus, cette étude s’adresse bien sûr aux médiévistes et aux naturalistes, mais aussi à tous ceux qu’intéresse la relation entre l’archéologie et l’histoire, la premier fournissant ici la preuve des données irremplaçable qu’elle apporte à la seconde. This study, by M. Colardelle, E. Verdel and a team of forty researches, of a fortified-settlement constructed in 1003 AD and abandonned before being submerged under the water of Lake Paladru around 1040 AD, enlarged to cover the surrounding landscape, has made an essential contribution to archaeology and medieval history. Besides fundamental information concerning architecture in wood, arts and crafts, food supply and agriculture, of which the evidence was remarkably well preserved, this research has led to a new interpretation of the events leading up to the revolution of 1000 AD, a key period in the history of the West. Exceptional, considering the investigational techniques used (stratigraphical excavation in subaquatic conditions, environmental sciences and archaeometry) and the results obtained, this study is of interest to historians and naturalists, but also to those interested by the relationship between archaeology and history, the first producing unique evidence to support the second.

Parmi les différentes disciplines mises à contribution pour l’étude du milieu lacustre, la sédimentologie et l’algologie ont montré, de façon concordante, que le niveau du lac de Paladru avait fortement varié au cours des deux derniers millénaires. Inférieur de 2 ou 3 m aux iie‑iiie siècles de notre ère, il est ensuite remonté à une cote moyenne proche de l’actuelle pour connaître, dans le courant du xe siècle, un nouvel épisode régressif. Cette baisse, en exondant les hauts fonds littoraux, a permis l’implantation des habitats de l’an Mil. L’origine météoroclimatique de ces oscillations bathymétriques semble désormais, au moins pour les xe‑xie siècles, clairement établie. Repérable dans la quasi‑totalité des colonnes sédimentaires, une strate caractéristique se distingue par un taux très élevé de carbonates qui résulterait de l’accélération du processus de précipitation de la craie dissoute, favorisée par un réchauffement des eaux de surface. D’autre part, le rapport 160/180, mesuré dans les cernes de croissance d’un pieu d’architecture de Colletière, indique une évapotranspiration plus importante qu’aujourd’hui, interprétée en termes de déficit hydrique provoqué par une diminution des précipitations moyennes dans la seconde moitié du xe et au début du xie siècle. A l’inverse, il est également très probable que l’abandon simultané des stations littorales, une trentaine d’années après leur fondation, est dû à une nouvelle transgression qui les a progressivement ennoyées. On constate en effet que les sédiments anthropiques de Colletière et des Grands Roseaux sont, sans transition, recouverts par des craies lacustres. Parallèlement aux variations limniques, la sédimentologie établit aussi la présence, entre les phases de sédimentation minérale, de plusieurs lits organiques dont certains sont maintenant datés du haut Moyen Age par le radiocarbone. Plus riches en phosphates, ils témoignent de premières tentatives d’exploitation du terroir à la fin de l’époque mérovingienne ou dans le courant de la période carolingienne. Ces essartages sporadiques resteront cependant d’ampleur et de durée limitées. Il en va tout autrement des défrichements extensifs de l’an Mil. Ceux‑ci influenceront de manière radicale et définitive le milieu lacustre qui enregistrera par la suite et sans discontinuité les traces de l’exploitation du bassin versant jusqu’à nos jours. L’étude paléoécologique a donc élargi le champ de ses investigations au milieu terrestre pour essayer de restituer, aussi fidèlement que possible, l’aspect des paysages au xie siècle, avant et pendant la colonisation. Pour cela, l’enquête pédologique a globalement évalué le potentiel agricole et déterminé les principales catégories de terroirs, en fonction de l’origine géologique, de la composition géochimique, de la texture des sols, de leur altitude et de leur exposition. Puis l’évolution du couvert végétal a été appréciée en comparant ses caractéristiques actuelles et subactuelles, connues par la phytosociologie, aux données fournies par la détermination des pollens, paléosemences et macrorestes végétaux contenus dans les sédiments lacustres antérieurs à l’an Mil et ceux qui ont été piégés dans les couches archéologiques elles‑mêmes. La confrontation de ces diverses données confirme que le terroir de Paladru est, avant la construction des habitats médiévaux, très largement occupé par un massif forestier primaire. Les défrichements opérés en quelques décennies furent importants et les zones déforestées soigneusement sélectionnées, pour répondre aux besoins en bois d’œuvre et pour obtenir des parcelles propices à une céréaliculture diversifiée. L’utilisation méthodique des essences naturellement présentes ou introduites pour l’alimentation humaine (cueillette et arboriculture) indique que la colonisation s’est déroulée selon un processus rationnel, remarquablement adapté aux moyens de l’agriculture et aux besoins agro‑alimentaires. La même observation vaut pour l’élevage du cheptel domestique, surtout porcin, qui utilise au mieux les ressources du milieu forestier. Le bon état sanitaire des troupeaux, les abattages systématiquement opérés dans la perspective du meilleur coût‑rendement, montrent, là encore, la bonne adaptation des techniques pastorales. Si la chasse du gibier demeure très occasionnelle, la pêche en revanche, attestée par de nombreux restes de poissons et par l’abondance du mobilier, a été régulièrement pratiquée, surtout pendant les intersaisons (printemps et automne), pour compléter l’alimentation. Among the different disciplines which have contributed to the study of the lacustrian area, sedimentology and diatoma determination have both shown that water‑levels of Paladru lake have varied greatly over the last 2 000 years. Lower by two or three metres in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it climbed close to its present height before it fell again in the 10th century. This lowering, by drying the littoral shallowers, was the beginning of the establishment of settlement in the year 1 000. The meteoro‑climatic origin of these bathymetric oscillations seems hereafter clearly established, at least for the 10th and 11th centuries. Visible in the quasi‑totality of sedimentary columns, a characteristic stratum distinguishes itself by its very elevated level of carbonates which resulted in the acceleration of the process of precipitation of dissolved chalk, encouraged by the reheating of the surface waters. On the other hand, the 160/180 ratio, measured in the growth rings observed on an architectural stake at Colletiere, indicates an evapotranspiration more important today, especially when interpreted in terms of an hydrous deficit provoked by a diminution of average precipitation in the second half of the 10th century and the beginning of the 11th. It is also equally probable that the simultaneous abandonment of lakeside stations, thirty years after their establishment, is due to a new transgression which progressively covered them again. It is certifiable, in effect, that the anthropic sediments at Colletiere and Grands Roseaux are, without transition, covered by lacustrian chalk. Paralleling these alluvial variations, sedimentology has also established the presence, between phases of mineral deposition of multiple organic layers, of which some have been dated to the High Middle Ages by radiocarbon. Richer in phosphates, they show evidence of the first attempts at cultivating the soil at the end of the Merovingian period or in the course of the Carolingian period. These sporadic clearings of the ground would have been, nevertheless, of a limited scope and duration. However, the clearings of the ground of the Year One Thousand is a completely different story. They would radically and definitively influence the lakeside area, which would then see the non‑stop exploitation of the catchment basin until the present day. Paleoecological studies have therefore enlarged their field of research to terrestrial investigations to try to restitute, as faithfully as possible, the landscapes of the 11th century both before and during colonization. To this end, a pedological inquiry has evaluated global agricultural potential and determined the principal categories of soils as a function of their geological origin, geochemical composition and ground texture. The evolution of vegetation has been examined by comparing present and former characteristics, known through phytosociology, determining on pollens, paleoseeds and vegetative macroremnants preserved in lakeside sediments since before the year 1 000 and trapped in archaeological layers. Examination of the results of these various testing procedures confirms that the soil of Paladru was, before the construction of medieval houses, largely occupied by a massive primary forest. The clearings undertaken over several decades were important, the deforested zones carefully selected to respond to the need for construction wood, and to create parcels of land that would promote a diversified cultivation of cereals. The methodical use of gasses naturally present or introduced by human efforts (gathering and arboriculture) indicates that colonization followed rational ways, adapting remarkably well to agricultural processes and to agroalimentary needs. The same observation holds equally for the raising of domestic livestock, above all porcine, which uses at the best forest resources. The good sanitary conditions of the herds and the clearing systematically undertaken in view of achieving the best return shows again the good adaptation of pastoral techniques. If hunting game was resorted to only occasionally, fishing, on the other hand, judging by the numerous fish remains and the abundance of equipment, was regularly practiced, above all between seasons (spring and autumn) to complete the diet. Von den verschiedenen Disziplinen, die zur Studie des lakustrischen Milieus herangezogen worden sind, haben die Sedimentologie und die Algologie übereinstimmend belegt, daß das Niveau des Paladrusees im Laufe der letzten 2000 Jahre bedeutend geschwankt hat. Im 2. und 3. Jh. unserer Zeitrechnung zwei oder drei Meter unterhalb des aktuellen Mittelwertes gelegen, ist es in der Folgezeit wieder an den Mittelwert angestiegen, um dann im Laufe des 10. Jh. erneut abzusinken. In dieser Regressionsphase, die die hochgelegenen Ufer des Sees freigelegt hat, konnten sich die Siedlungen des Jahres 1000 niederlassen. Der Wetter, – und Klimabedingte Ursprung dieser bathymetrischen Schwankungen, scheint nun, zumindest für das 10. und 11. Jh., klar bewiesen zu sein. In fast allen Bohrkernen ist eine charakteristische Schicht erkennbar, die sich durch einen sehr hohen Anteil von Karbonaten auszeichnet, der aus der Beschleunigung des Niederschlagsprozesses aufgelöster Kreide resultiert, der durch die Erwärmung der Wasseroberfläche begünstigt wurde. Andererseits zeigt das Verhältnis 160/180, das in den Wachstumsringen eines architektonischen Pfahls von Colletiere gemessen wurde, eine stärkere Ausdünstung als heute an, die als Wassermangel zu interpretieren ist, der durch eine Verringerung der mittleren Niederschlagswerte in der 2. Hälfte des 10. und zu Beginn des 11. Jh. hervorgerufen worden war. Hingegen ist es ebenso wahrscheinlich, daß die gleichzeitige Aufgabe der Ufersiedlungen 30 Jahre nach ihrer Gründung durch ein erneutes Ansteigen des Wasserspiegels verursacht wurde, der die Häuser nach und nach überflutete. Es ist effektiv festgestellt worden, daß die Siedlungsschichten von Colletiere und Grands Roseaux, ohne Übergang, von limnischem Kalk bedeckt worden sind. Die Sedimentologie zeigt, parallel zu den limnischen Variationen, das Vorhandensein, zwischen den mineralischen Ablagerungen, mehrerer organischer Schichten, von denen nun einige durch Radiokarbon ins hohe Mittelalter datiert worden sind. Sie weisen einen erhöhten Phosphat Gehalt auf und zeugen von den ersten Bodennützungsversuchen am Ende der merowingischen oder im Laufe der karolingischen Zeit. Diese sporadischen Rodungen blieben jedoch sowohl zeitlich, als auch räumlich begrenzt. Dies verhält sich ganz anders mit den ausgedehnten Rodungen des Jahres 1000. Sie prägten auf tiefgreifende und entgültige Weise das lakustrische Milieu, das in der Folgezeit und bis zum heutigen Tage, die Spuren dieser Urbarmachung des Seegebietes trägt. Das Studium der Paläoökologie hat das Forschunggebiet also auf das Bodenmilieu erweitert, um eine möglichst getreue Restitution des Landschaftsbildes im 11 Jh., vor und während der Kolonisation, zu erstellen. In diesem Sinne hat die Pedologie das landwirtschaftliche Potential geschätzt und die wichtigsten Bodenkategorien, nach Gesichtspunkten des geologischen Ursprungs, der geochemischen Zusammensetzung der Bodentextur, ihrer Höhe und ihrer Lage, erstimmt. Die Entwicklung der Pflanzendecke ist beurteilt worden, indem man die heutigen und fast heutigen Eigenschaften, die durch die Phytosoziologie bekannt sind, mit den Gegebenheiten verglichen hat, die die Pollenanalyse, die der fossilen Samen und der makrobotanischen Reste, die in den vor 1000 datierten lakustrischen Schichten eingeschlossen waren ergaben, und denen, die die archäologischen Schichten selbst auszeichneten. Die Gegenüberstellung dieser verschiedenen Informationen bestätigt, daß die Gegend des Paladrusees, vor der mittelalterlichen Besiedlung, weitgehend von einem Primärwald bedeckt war. Die, in wenigen Jahrzehnten durchgeführten, Rodungen waren umfangreich, und die entwaldeten Gebiete sorgfältig ausgewählt und entsprachen dem Bedarf an Nutzholz und an Anbauflächen für einen vielfältigen Getreideanbau. Die methodische Nützung der, von Natur aus vorhandenen, oder für die menschliche Ernährung eingeführten Baumarten (Obstbäume) zeigt, daß die Kolonisation methodisch abgelaufen ist und den landwirtschaftlichen Mitteln und den Bedürfnissen und Nahrungsmitteln hervorragend angepasst war. Die gleiche Beobachtung gilt für die Vieh, – vor allem Schweinezucht, die die Gegebenheiten des umliegenden Waldes bestens nützt. Der gute Gesundheitszustand der Herden, die, in Hinsicht auf das beste Nutz – Kostenverhältnis durchgeführten systematischen Schlachtungen, zeigen ebenfalls die guten fachlichen Kenntnisse der Hirten. Wenn die Jagd sich in einem bescheidenen Rahmen hielt, so gehörte der Fischfang, bezeugt durch zahlreiche Fischreste und eine Fülle von Geräten, zu den regelmässigen Tätigkeiten, die die Ernährung, vor allem im Frühling und im Herbst, ergänzten.
