Abstract

A fast-timing experiment was performed at the Argonne National Laboratory to measure the lifetimes of the lowest lying states of nuclei belonging to the deformed regions around mass number A≃110 and A≃150. These regions were populated via spontaneous fission of 252Cf and the gamma radiation following the decay of excited states in the fission fragments was measured using 51 Gammasphere detectors coupled with 25 LaBr3:Ce detectors. A brief description of the acquisition system and some preliminary results from the fast-timing analysis of the fission fragment 100Zr are presented. The lifetime value of τ = 840(65) ps was found for the 2+ state in 100Zr consistent within one standard deviation of the adopted value with 791 +26 -35ps. This is associated with a quadrupole deformation parameter of 0.36(2) which is within one standard deviation of the literature value of 0.3556+82 -57.

Abstract

The structure of the doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the $\beta^-$decay of $^{132}$In and $\beta^-$-delayed neutron emission of $^{133}$In. The level scheme of $^{132}$Sn is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 $\gamma$-transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the $\beta$ decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new $\gamma$-transitions and states populated in the $\beta$-n decay of $^{133}$In. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for $^{132}$In and $^{133}$In. Level lifetimes are measured via the Advanced Time-Delayed $\beta\gamma\gamma$(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the \textit{N} = 82 and \textit{Z} = 50 shells, leading to positive and negative parity particle-hole multiplets. The -delayed -ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three -decay branches of were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via rays was identified in the two daughter nuclei of and , at excitation energies exceeding the neutron separation energy by 1 MeV. The -delayed one- and two-neutron emission branching ratios of were determined and compared with theoretical calculations. The -delayed one-neutron decay was observed to be dominant -decay branch of even though the Gamow-Teller resonance is located substantially above the two-neutron separation energy of . Transitions following the decay of are reported for the first time, including rays tentatively attributed to . In total, six new levels were identified in on the basis of the coincidences observed in the and decays. A transition that might be a candidate for deexciting the missing neutron single-particle state in was observed in both decays and its assignment is discussed. Experimental level schemes of and are compared with shell-model predictions. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the , and levels in were determined. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ levels in $^{134}$Sn were determined.

Abstract

The structure of the doubly magic Sn8250132 has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the β-decay of In132 and β - delayed neutron emission of In133. The level scheme of Sn132 is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 γ transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the β decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new γ transitions and states populated in the β-n decay of In133. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for In132 and In133. Level lifetimes are measured via the advanced time-delayed βγγ(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the N = 82 and Z = 50 shells, leading to positive- and negative-parity particle-hole multiplets. The experimental information provides new data to challenge the theoretical description of Sn132.

Abstract

Using a hybrid Gammasphere array coupled to 25 LaBr3(Ce) detectors, the lifetimes of the first three levels of the yrast band in Pd114, populated via Cf252 decay, have been measured. The measured lifetimes are τ2+=103(10)ps, τ4+=22(13)ps, and τ6+≤10ps for the 21+, 41+, and 61+ levels, respectively. Palladium-114 was predicted to be the most deformed isotope of its isotopic chain, and spectroscopic studies have suggested it might also be a candidate nucleus for low-spin stable triaxiality. From the lifetimes measured in this work, reduced transition probabilities B(E2;J→J-2) are calculated and compared with interacting boson model, projected shell model, and collective model calculations from the literature. The experimental ratio RB(E2)=B(E2;41+→21+)/B(E2;21+→01+)=0.80(42) is measured for the first time in Pd114 and compared with the known values RB(E2) in the palladium isotopic chain: the systematics suggest that, for N=68, a transition from γ-unstable to a more rigid γ-deformed nuclear shape occurs.

Abstract

The even–even nucleus 142Xe lies north-east of the doubly magic 132Sn on the neutron-rich side of the nuclear chart. In order to gain further information on the octupole collectivity and the evolution of quadrupole collectivity in this region, a “safe” Coulomb excitation experiment was carried out at the new HIE-ISOLDE facility (CERN) at the end of 2016. As the gamma-ray detector the Miniball spectrometer was used. Beam and target nuclei were detected using C-REX, i.e. an array of segmented Si detectors, covering forward as well as backward angles in the laboratory frame.

Abstract

Excited states in the neutron-rich isotope 133Sn were studied via the ß decay of 133In. Isomer selective ionization using the ISOLDE RILIS enabled the ß decays of 133Ings (I¿ = 9=2+) and 133mIn (II¿ = 1=2-) to be studied independently for the first time. A description of the experimental setup at the ISOLDE Decay Station is presented together with preliminary results from the experiment.

Abstract

The occurrence of octupolar shapes in the Ba isotopic chain was recently established experimentally up to N = 90. To further extend the systematics, the evolution of shapes in the most neutron-rich members of the Z = 56 isotopic chain accessible at present, Ba-148,Ba-150, has been studied via beta decay at the ISOLDE Decay Station. This paper reports on the first measurement of the positive-and negative-parity low-spin excited states of 150Ba and presents an extension of the beta-decay scheme of Cs-148. Employing the fast timing technique, half-lives for the 2(1)(+) level in both nuclei have been determined, resulting in T-1/2 = 1.51(1) ns for Ba-148 and T-1/2 = 3.4(2) ns for Ba-150. The systematics of low-spin states, together with the experimental determination of the B(E2 : 2(+) -> 0(+)) transition probabilities, indicate an increasing collectivity in Ba148-150, towards prolate deformed shapes. The experimental data are compared to symmetry conserving configuration mixing (SCCM) calculations, confirming an evolution of increasingly quadrupole deformed shapes with a definite octupolar character.

Abstract

In this work, the findings of the first assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in emissions releases to the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants are given. A total of five plants were selected for the study located at different provinces in Spain., In all the cases, the results revealed very low levels, in the range of 0.41 pg I-TEQ/N m3. The profile indicated in the majority of the cases predominance of highly chlorinated congeners being OCDD the most important contributor., The findings were also used to estimate contribution of PCDDs/PCDFs emitted from coal-fired power plants in Spain. Individual plant results revealed values below 0.02 g I-TEQ per year and plant. Nevertheless, considering the total coal consumption in Spain in 1997, the values are comparable to those reported in other countries in the range of 0.6–0.7 g I-TEQ per year. Moreover, emission factors were determined considering operating conditions of evaluated plants. In general, large variability was observed and values below 1–5 pg I-TEQ/kg coal were early reached.

Abstract

Objective: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health-related quality of life, and correlate them with unstimulated whole salivary flow (UWSF) and oral sicca symptoms in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS)., Methods: We included 60 patients with PSS and 60 healthy controls matched according to gender and age (±3 years). We measured the UWSF and scored the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI). We assessed the short version of the SF-36 as a generic measurement of HRQoL and the Xerostomia Quality of Life Scale (XeQoLS) questionnaire to evaluate oral quality of life. We evaluated oral symptoms using an 8-item Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaire., Results: We observed a poorer HRQoL (lower scores in SF-36) and oral quality of life (higher scores in XeQoLS), as well as a greater severity of symptoms in the VAS questionnaire upon comparing patients vs. controls. The XeQoL correlated with the UWSF (τ = -0.24, P = .008), the ESSPRI (τ =0.45, P = .0001), VAS 1-2 and VAS 5-8 and the SF-36 score (τ = -0.28, P = .002)., Conclusions: Patients with PSS had a poorer HRQoL and oral quality of life than controls. UWSF contributes to the oral quality of life which, in turn, has an impact on HRQoL. Abstract

In this work, a novel, fast, and sensitive method was developed for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and PFOS precursor's determination in seawater. The proposed method consists in a vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VALLME) combined with liquid chromatography (LC) and LTQ-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (LTQ-Orbitrap HRMS) determination. Several parameters affecting both the HPLC-LTQ Orbitrap HRMS determination and the VALLME were studied, with special attention to blank contamination problem. The use of LTQ-Orbitrap-HRMS in full mode, quantifying the target analytes using the exact mass, provides a very powerful detection in terms of sensitivity and specificity maintaining all the information provided by the full mass spectra, allowing, also, the identification of non-target substances. The use of matrix-matched calibration, together with labelled surrogate standards, minimize matrix effects and compensate potential recovery losses, resulting in recoveries between 95 and 105%, with excellent sensitivity (quantitation limit between 0.7 and 6 ng L -1 ) and precision (4-10%). The proposed method requires only 35 mL of sample and 100 μL of extracting solvent, is fast and avoids the use of other solvents to obtain the dispersive cloudy solution, simplifying the procedure and improving the existing procedures for the determination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in seawater in terms of green analytical chemistry. The method was successfully validated by participating in a proficiency test assay provided by the National Measurement Institute of the Australian Government for the determination of PFOA, total PFOS and linear PFOS in waters. A revision of the state of the art in the last twelve years of methods for the analysis of PFASs in seawater and other types of water was performed, and a critical comparison between the developed method and the previously published was included. Finally, the method was applied to the analysis of samples from Ría de Vigo, a sensitive and semiconfined coastal area located in the northwest of Spain. PFOS, N-methyl perfluorooctanesulfonamide (n-MeFOSA) and N-ethyl perfluorooctanesulfonamide (n-EtFOSA) were detected in samples at levels lower than the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) established by Directive 2013/39/EU, but above the annual average (AA) levels., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

This article investigates the applicability of HPLC-UV, ultra performance LC-evaporative light-scattering detection (UPLC-ELSD), HPLC-ESI(+)-MS and HPLC-hybrid linear ion trap (LTQ) Orbitrap MS for the analysis of different non-ionic antistatic additives, Span 20, Span 60, Span 65, Span 80, Span 85 (sorbitan fatty acid esters), Atmer 129 (glycerol fatty acid ester) and Atmer 163 (ethoxylated alkylamine). Several alkyl chain length or different degrees of esterification of polyol derivatives can be present in commercial mixtures of these polymer additives. Therefore, their identification and quantification is complicated. Qualitative composition of the studied compounds was analysed by MS. HPLC-UV, UPLC-ELSD and HPLC-LTQ Orbitrap MS methods were applied to the quantitative determination of the different Spans, Atmer 129 and Atmer 163, respectively. Abstract

A chromatographic method using ultra performance LC with ultraviolet spectrophotometry detection system (UPLC-UV-visible (UV/Vis)) (UPLC, ultra performance LC) was developed to determine Chimassorb 944 and Tinuvin 770, high- and low-molecular mass hindered amine light stabilizers, respectively. The use of a bridge ethylene hybrid-based particles C(18) UPLC column, being compatible with a buffered mobile phase adjusted to pH 11.5, was used to achieve a satisfactory elution of possible non-ionizated units of polymeric Chimassorb 944. In addition, a HPLC with positive ion mode ESI and hybrid linear ion trap (LTQ) Fourier transform (FT) Orbitrap MS detection system (HPLC-UV/Vis-ESI-LTQ(FT)Orbitrap) was used for screening and identification purposes. Reliable determinations of monomeric units of Chimassorb 944 and molecule of Tinuvin 770 were achieved by HPLC-ESI(+)-LTQ FT Orbitrap MS method using scan mode. Quality parameters of UPLC-UV/Vis method were evaluated. Obtained LODs and LOQs were 3.41 and 11.4 mg/L for Tinuvin 770 and 0.83 and 2.78 mg/L for Chimassorb 944, respectively. Satisfactory quality parameters of this chromatography method provided the chance to count on a good tool to know the compliance with legal requirements.
