24. Real-World Evaluation of Once-Weekly Subcutaneous Semaglutide in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Spain (SEMA-RW Study).

Abstract

Although, in randomized clinical trials, once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide (OW s.c.) has demonstrated superior efficacy in comparison with placebo and active controls in terms of glycemic control and body weight reduction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), these results need to be confirmed in a real-world (RW) setting. An RW ambispective study (6 months retrospective and 6 months prospective) was conducted in 10 tertiary hospitals in Spain. We evaluated changes in HbA1c and body weight in patients with T2DM treated with semaglutide OW s.c. Additionally, we analyzed different subgroups of patients treated with semaglutide OW s.c. as an add-on to glucose-lowering therapy. A total of 752 patients with a mean age of 60.2 years, a mean HbA1c level of 8.5%, a mean body weight of 101.6 kg, and a mean T2DM duration of 10 years were included. At 12 months, compared with baseline, there was a mean difference of −2.1% in HbA1c levels (p < 0.001) and a mean difference of 9.2 kg in body weight (p < 0.001). Moreover, there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) between baseline and month 12 in both HbA1c and body weight in the four subgroups receiving semaglutide OW s.c. as an add-on to glucose-lowering therapy. Semaglutide OW s.c. was well tolerated, with gastrointestinal disorders being the most commonly reported side effects. In this RW study, 12 months of treatment with semaglutide OW s.c. in patients with T2DM was associated with significant and clinically relevant improvements in glycemic control and weight loss, regardless of the glucose-lowering therapy received, and the overall safety profile was positive. Abstract

This longitudinal study aimed to analyze the effects of a team rowing-based training program on physical fitness and anthropometric parameters in female breast cancer survivors (n = 40; 56.78 ± 6.38 years). Participants were divided into two groups: one rowed in fixed seat rowing (FSR) boats (n = 20; 56.35 ± 4.89 years) and the other in sliding seat rowing (SSR) boats (n = 20; 57.20 ± 7.7 years). Both groups engaged in two 75-min sessions per week for 24 weeks. Significant improvements were observed in both groups in resting heart rate (FSR: −10.65 bpm; SSR: −8.45 bpm), heart rate at the beginning of the 6-min walk test (6 MWT) (FSR: −10.7 bpm; SSR: −11.25 bpm), and heart rate at the end of the test (FSR: −13.85 bpm; SSR: −20.35 bpm). Blood pressure improved significantly in both diastolic blood pressure (FSR: −12.35 mmHg; SSR: −19.25 mmHg) and systolic blood pressure (FSR: −13 mmHg; SSR: −16.95 mmHg). Additionally, both groups increased the distance covered in the 6 MWT (FSR: +63.05 m; SSR: +93.65 m). These results suggest that a rowing training program is a viable and safe activity for female breast cancer survivors, improving cardiac function, blood pressure, and cardiorespiratory capacity, particularly in sliding seat boats. Abstract

Context Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by the intracellular lipid accumulation in hepatocytes. Excess caloric intake and high-fat diets are considered to significantly contribute to MASLD development. Objective To evaluate the hepatic and serum fatty acid (FA) composition in patients with different stages of MASLD, and their relationship with FA dietary intake and MASLD-related risk factors. Methods This was a case–control study in patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery at a university hospital between January 2020 and December 2021. Participants were distributed in 3 groups: no MASLD (n = 26), steatotic liver disease (n = 33), and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (n = 32). Hepatic and serum FA levels were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Nutritional status was evaluated using validated food frequency questionnaires. The hepatic expression of genes involved in FA metabolism was analyzed by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results The hepatic, but not serum, FA profiles were significantly altered in patients with MASLD compared with those without MASLD. No differences were observed in FA intake between the groups. Levels of C16:0, C18:1, and the C18:1/C18:0 ratio were higher, while C18:0 levels and C18:0/C16:0 ratio were lower in patients with MASLD, being significantly different between the 3 groups. Hepatic FA levels and ratios correlated with histopathological diagnosis and other MASLD-related parameters. The expression of genes involved in the FA metabolism was upregulated in patients with MASLD. Abstract

A nationwide multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted in Spain to evaluate the real-world effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of oral semaglutide in people living with type 2 diabetes. The study included over 1,000 participants and found that oral semaglutide was effective and safe, with one-third of patients experiencing weight loss of over 10% and two-thirds achieving glycated hemoglobin levels below 7%. The study also identified factors associated with treatment response and drug persistence. The findings of this study can be useful for clinical decision-making, especially considering the global supply chain issues for subcutaneous GLP-1 receptor agonists. [Extracted from the article]

41. Relación entre la habilidad de lanzamiento y el rendimiento académico en edad escolar

Abstract

Desde los primeros años de vida, el desarrollo cognitivo está estrechamente relacionado con la habilidad motriz o el desarrollo motor. El principal objetivo fue analizar las relaciones existentes entre el rendimiento académico en edad escolar y la habilidad del lanzamiento. La muestra estuvo conformada por 152 estudiantes, 66 chicas y 86 chicos con edad media de 8,54 ± 0,61 años. La intervención constó de cuatro sesiones destinadas a la recogida de datos, la realización de test de evaluación del lanzamiento y la mejora de la habilidad de lanzamiento. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que tras la intervención se produjo una mejora en la ejecución técnica de los lanzamientos (Una mano (t (139) = 3,23; diff mean = 0,200; p < 0,01); Dos manos (t (139) = 5,636; diff mean = 0,307; p < 0,01)), aunque no así en la distancia (Una mano (t (139) = -0,187; diff mean = - 0,026; p > 0,05); Dos manos (t (139) = - 4,604; diff mean = - 0,434; p < 0,01)). La práctica deportiva se relaciona con un mejor rendimiento académico en la nota media general y asignaturas como Francés, Educación Física o Educación Artística. Por último, la habilidad de lanzamiento se relaciona significativamente con el rendimiento académico en distintas asignaturas, especialmente con Educación Física. Podemos concluir que una intervención a corto plazo puede mejorar la ejecución técnica del lanzamiento, y que la práctica deportiva y la habilidad de lanzamiento se relaciona significativamente con el rendimiento académico en algunas áreas curriculares de Educación Primaria., From the earliest years of life, cognitive development is closely related to motor ability or motor development. The intervention consisted of four sessions aimed at data collection, performance of throwing evaluation tests, and improvement and refinement of throwing skills. The results obtained show that after the intervention there was an improvement in the technical execution of throws (one hand (t (139) = 3.23; diff mean = 0.200; p < 0.01); two hands (t (139) = 5.636; diff mean = 0.307; p < 0.01), but not in distance (one hand t (139) = -0.187; diff mean = - 0.026; p > 0.05); two hands t (139) = - 4.604; diff mean = - 0.434; p < 0.01). Sport practice has been related to better academic performance in the overall average grade and in some subjects such as French, Physical Education or Art Education. Finally, throwing skill is significantly related to academic performance in some of the curricular areas, especially Physical Education. We can conclude that a short-term intervention can improve the technical execution of throwing, and that sports practice and throwing ability is significantly related to academic performance in some curricular areas of Primary Education.

Abstract

Oleocanthal and oleacein are olive oil phenolic compounds with well known anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. The main evidence, however, is provided by experimental studies. Few human studies have examined the health benefits of olive oils rich in these biophenols. Our aim was to assess the health properties of rich oleocanthal and oleacein extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), compared to those of common olive oil (OO), in people with prediabetes and obesity.
