1. SpaceRaceEdu: developing an educational multi-player videogame for self-study and assessment

Abstract

The teaching innovation project SpaceRaceEdu: development of an educational multiplayer video game for self-study and self-assessment has been carried out under the INNOVA call of the Autonomous University of Madrid during the 2022-2023 academic year. In this project, a functional prototype of SpaceRaceEdu has been developed: a multiplayer video game with a social and educational nature, which can be used both by teachers as a training and evaluation activity and by students as a tool for study and evaluation. In SpaceRaceEdu, several student teams try to launch a rocket before everyone else. To meet this objective, they must gather a series of resources by going through a scenario and answering questions of different types. The teachers can introduce these questions according to the contents of their subject. The videogame balances competition and cooperation to promote participation and learning. Competition occurs between teams who strive to answer all their questions correctly before their rivals. Abstract

Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Computationally hard tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their resources for simulation, analysis, and data processing. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions.

Abstract

In railway applications, it is common to use an LC filter connected between the catenary and the input port of the main converter of the auxiliary and traction systems. In addition, in the auxiliary systems, there is a converter operating as a battery charger, which requires a very low ripple in the output current and output voltage, so a postfilter may be placed at the output port of the converter. This article proposes a step-by-step methodology to extend the injected-absorbed-current (IAC) method in order to obtain transfer functions that consider the effects of the input filter, output postfilter, and some feedforward compensations. The proposed methodology allows reusing the characteristic coefficients of the DC-DC converter model derived from the existing IAC method. One of the advantages of the proposed methodology is that the transfer functions obtained in this article are valid for cases where both, one or none of the filters, are implemented. Finally, for the experimental validation of the proposed methodology, the phase-shifted full-bridge converter was selected as a convenient example. 18. Game Learning Analytics: Blending Visual and Data Mining Techniques to Improve Serious Games and to Better Understand Player Learning

Abstract

Game learning analytics (GLA) comprise the collection, analysis, and visualization of player interactions with serious games. The information gathered from these analytics can help us improve serious games and better understand player actions and strategies, as well as improve player assessment. However, the application of analytics is a complex and costly process that is not yet generalized in serious games. Using a standard data format to collect player interactions is essential: the standardization allows us to simplify and systematize every step in developing tools and processes compatible with multiple games. In this paper, we explore a combination of 1) an exploratory visualization tool that analyzes player interactions in the game and provides an overview of their actions, and 2) an assessment approach, based on the collection of interaction data for player assessment. We describe some of the different opportunities offered by analytics in game-based learning, the relevance of systematizing the process by using standards and game-independent analyses and visualizations, and the different techniques (visualizations, data mining models) that can be applied to yield meaningful information to better understand learners' actions and results in serious games.

20. Optical mirages from spinless beams

Abstract

Spin-orbit interactions of light are ubiquitous in multiple branches of nanophotonics, including optical wave localization. In that framework, it is widely accepted that circularly polarized beams lead to spin-dependent apparent shifts of dipolar targets commonly referred to as optical mirages. In contrast, these optical mirages vanish when the illumination comes from a spinless beam such as a linearly polarized wave. Here we show that optical localization errors emerge for particles sustaining electric and magnetic dipolar response under the illumination of spinless beams. As an example, we calculate the optical mirage for the scattering by a high refractive index nanosphere under the illumination of a linearly polarized plane wave carrying null spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. Our results point to an overlooked interference between the electric and magnetic dipoles rather than the spin-orbit interactions of light as the origin for the tilted position of the nanosphere.

31. Systematic Literature Review of Digital Resources to Educate on Gender Equality

Abstract

Violence and discrimination against women are serious problems that affect today's society regardless of culture or social environment. Educational and government programs addressing these gender issues are difficult to scale up, insufficient or, in some cases, nonexistent. Digital resources can contribute to address discrimination against women and different technological initiatives are being carried out around the world. Videogames and digital resources have proven their effectiveness as tools to educate, prevent and raise awareness about social problems. This article presents a systematic literature review of digital resources such as videogames, apps and simulations that address gender issues including violence and stereotypes. Throughout the review, we analyze multiple characteristics of the resources found (development tools, platforms, location, target audience) to classify the studies found. The main goal of this review is to present the status of gender-focused digital resources, their evaluation studies, including the metrics used and samples, as well as the acceptance and impact of their application. Most of the studies reviewed aimed to raise awareness about gender-based violence using serious games targeted at teenagers. For the resources evaluated, pre-post questionnaires were commonly used. However, many of the projects reviewed did not have evaluation studies or the resources were not openly available, thus limiting their massive application and their potential impact on society. We consider that our results provide a starting point to better understand the role of digital resources in raising awareness about gender issues, highlighting their current limitations, and providing recommendations for future research in gender-based digital resources.

32. Peer Aggression and Victimisation: Social Behaviour Strategies in Early Childhood in Spain

Abstract

The present study aims to examine the issue of peer aggression and victimisation in early childhood, with a focus on the associated social behaviour strategies (aggressiveness, prosociality, dominance and social insecurity). A sample of 227 children (58.1% girls, n = 132) between the ages of 4 and 7 years (M = 5.61; SD = 1. 03) participated in the study. Teacher reports and peer nominations of physical and verbal aggression and victimisation were analysed. Results showed an association between aggressiveness and insecurity and being nominated as a physical and verbal aggressor by peers. Being nominated as a physical victim was associated with aggressiveness and dominance; and for verbal victim with aggressiveness and prosociality. Differences were found between boys and girls in verbal aggression and victimisation. The current study contributes to a better understanding of the emergence of peer aggression and victimisation in relation to social processes in early childhood and has implications for the prevention of the later appearance of bullying.

39. The Use and Effects of Incentive Systems on Learning and Performance in Educational Games

Abstract

We examined the use and effectiveness of an incentive system--one of the five elements of a theory-based motivational architecture in educational games that we proposed--in a computer-based physics game on students' learning and performance. The incentive system's purpose was to motivate students to access learning supports designed to facilitate content knowledge acquisition (i.e., content-related supports) and minimize the use of solution videos (i.e., game-related supports). Students (n = 199) could earn game money by accessing content-related supports but had to pay to watch solution videos. Results indicated that the incentive system effectively increased how often students viewed content-related supports and decreased their reliance on solution videos. Furthermore, students who viewed more content-related supports showed higher posttest scores and solved more game levels compared to those who watched fewer supports, controlling for pretest scores. Solution videos, however, appeared to have no effect on either posttest scores or number of levels solved. Finally, our analysis of students' behavioral data, extracted from log files, confirmed that students did not abuse solution videos. We conclude by proposing areas of interest for future research.

Abstract

We present an algorithm which efficiently estimates the intrinsic long-term value of a portfolio of assets on a quantum computer. The method relies on quantum amplitude estimation to estimate the mean of a novel implementation of the Gordon-Shapiro formula. The choice of loading and readout algorithms makes it possible to price a five-asset portfolio on present day quantum computers, a feat which has not been realised using quantum computing to date. We compare results from two available trapped ion quantum computers. 47. Evidence-Based Evaluation of a Serious Game to Increase Bullying Awareness

Abstract

Game Learning Analytics can be used to conduct evidence-based evaluations of the effect that serious games produce on their players by combining in-game user interactions and traditional evaluation methods. We illustrate this approach with a case-study where we conduct an evidence-based evaluation of a serious game's effectiveness to increase awareness of bullying. In this paper, we describe: (1) the full process of tracking in-game interactions, analyzing the traces collected using the standard xAPI-SG format, and deriving game learning analytics variables (to be used as "evidences"); and (2) the use of those variables to predict the increase in bullying awareness. We consider that this process can be generalized and replicated to systematize, and therefore simplify, evidence-based evaluations for other serious games based on the interaction data of their players.
