Sequential positivity is often a necessary assumption for drawing causal inferences, such as through marginal structural modeling. Unfortunately, verification of this assumption can be challenging because it usually relies on multiple parametric propensity score models, unlikely all correctly specified. Therefore, we propose a new algorithm, called "sequential Positivity Regression Tree" (sPoRT), to check this assumption with greater ease under either static or dynamic treatment strategies. This algorithm also identifies the subgroups found to be violating this assumption, allowing for insights about the nature of the violations and potential solutions. We first present different versions of sPoRT based on either stratifying or pooling over time. Finally, we illustrate its use in a real-life application of HIV-positive children in Southern Africa with and without pooling over time. An R notebook showing how to use sPoRT is available at github.com/ArthurChatton/sPoRT-notebook., Comment: 10 pages, 4 Tables, 2 Figures. Submitted

Word error rate (WER) as a metric has a variety of limitations that have plagued the field of speech recognition. Evaluation datasets suffer from varying style, formality, and inherent ambiguity of the transcription task. In this work, we attempt to mitigate some of these differences by performing style-agnostic evaluation of ASR systems using multiple references transcribed under opposing style parameters. As a result, we find that existing WER reports are likely significantly over-estimating the number of contentful errors made by state-of-the-art ASR systems. In addition, we have found our multireference method to be a useful mechanism for comparing the quality of ASR models that differ in the stylistic makeup of their training data and target task.

Today, we are open-sourcing our core speech recognition and diarization models for non-commercial use. We are releasing both a full production pipeline for developers as well as pared-down research models for experimentation. Rev hopes that these releases will spur research and innovation in the fast-moving domain of voice technology. The speech recognition models released today outperform all existing open source speech recognition models across a variety of long-form speech recognition domains.

Background: Advanced methods for causal inference, such as targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE), require certain conditions for statistical inference. However, in situations where there is not differentiability due to data sparsity or near-positivity violations, the Donsker class condition is violated. In such situations, TMLE variance can suffer from inflation of the type I error and poor coverage, leading to conservative confidence intervals. Cross-validation of the TMLE algorithm (CVTMLE) has been suggested to improve on performance compared to TMLE in settings of positivity or Donsker class violations. We aim to investigate the performance of CVTMLE compared to TMLE in various settings. Methods: We utilised the data-generating mechanism as described in Leger et al. (2022) to run a Monte Carlo experiment under different Donsker class violations. Then, we evaluated the respective statistical performances of TMLE and CVTMLE with different super learner libraries, with and without regression tree methods. Results: We found that CVTMLE vastly improves confidence interval coverage without adversely affecting bias, particularly in settings with small sample sizes and near-positivity violations. Furthermore, incorporating regression trees using standard TMLE with ensemble super learner-based initial estimates increases bias and variance leading to invalid statistical inference. Conclusions: It has been shown that when using CVTMLE the Donsker class condition is no longer necessary to obtain valid statistical inference when using regression trees and under either data sparsity or near-positivity violations. We show through simulations that CVTMLE is much less sensitive to the choice of the super learner library and thereby provides better estimation and inference in cases where the super learner library uses more flexible candidates and is prone to overfitting., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
We consider a parabolic-parabolic interface problem and construct a loosely coupled prediction-correction scheme based on the Robin-Robin splitting method analyzed in [J. Numer. Math., 31(1):59--77, 2023]. We show that the errors of the correction step converge at $\mathcal O((\Delta t)^2)$, under suitable convergence rate assumptions on the discrete time derivative of the prediction step, where $\Delta t$ stands for the time-step length. Numerical results are shown to support our analysis and the assumptions.

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
We consider a loosely coupled, non-iterative Robin-Robin coupling method proposed and analyzed in [J. Numer. Math., 31(1):59--77, 2023] for a parabolic-parabolic interface problem and prove estimates for the discrete time derivatives of the scalar field in different norms. When the interface is flat and perpendicular to two of the edges of the domain we prove error estimates in the $H^2$-norm. Such estimates are key ingredients to analyze a defect correction method for the parabolic-parabolic interface problem. Numerical results are shown to support our findings.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control - Abstract
The applications of reference governors to systems with unmeasured set-bounded disturbances can lead to conservative solutions. This conservatism can be reduced by estimating the disturbance from output measurements and canceling it in the nominal control law. In this paper, a reference governor based on such an approach is considered and time-varying, disturbance and state estimation errors bounding sets are derived. Consequently, the traditional implementation of a reference governor, which exploits a constraint admissible positively-invariant set of constant commands and initial states, is replaced by one which utilizes a time-dependent sequence of similar sets (which are not necessary nested). Examples are reported which include two applications to longitudinal control of aircraft that illustrate handling of elevator uncertainty and wing icing., Comment: 20 pages

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control - Abstract
The paper addresses a problem of constrained spacecraft attitude stabilization with simultaneous reaction wheel (RW) desaturation. The spacecraft has a reaction wheel array (RWA) consisting of four RWs in a pyramidal configuration. The developments exploit a spacecraft dynamics model with gravity gradient torques. The linearized dynamics are shown to be controllable at almost all RWA configurations. Configurations that result in the highest Degree of Controllability are elucidated. A strategy that combines an incremental reference governor and time-distributed model predictive control is proposed to perform constrained RW desaturation at low computational cost. Simulation results of successful RW desaturation maneuvers subject to spacecraft pointing constraints, RW zero-speed crossing avoidance and limits on control moments are reported., Comment: Accepted for The 22nd World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (Yokohama, Japan)

The Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (TMLE) statistical data analysis framework integrates machine learning, statistical theory, and statistical inference to provide a least biased, efficient and robust strategy for estimation and inference of a variety of statistical and causal parameters. We describe and evaluate the epidemiological applications that have benefited from recent methodological developments. We conducted a systematic literature review in PubMed for articles that applied any form of TMLE in observational studies. We summarised the epidemiological discipline, geographical location, expertise of the authors, and TMLE methods over time. We used the Roadmap of Targeted Learning and Causal Inference to extract key methodological aspects of the publications. We showcase the contributions to the literature of these TMLE results. Of the 81 publications included, 25% originated from the University of California at Berkeley, where the framework was first developed by Professor Mark van der Laan. By the first half of 2022, 70% of the publications originated from outside the United States and explored up to 7 different epidemiological disciplines in 2021-22. Double-robustness, bias reduction and model misspecification were the main motivations that drew researchers towards the TMLE framework. Through time, a wide variety of methodological, tutorial and software-specific articles were cited, owing to the constant growth of methodological developments around TMLE. There is a clear dissemination trend of the TMLE framework to various epidemiological disciplines and to increasing numbers of geographical areas. The availability of R packages, publication of tutorial papers, and involvement of methodological experts in applied publications have contributed to an exponential increase in the number of studies that understood the benefits, and adoption, of TMLE., Comment: 42 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control - Abstract
In this paper, a control scheme is developed based on an input constrained Model Predictive Controller (MPC) and the idea of modifying the reference command to enforce constraints, usual of Reference Governors (RG). The proposed scheme, referred to as the RGMPC, requires optimization for MPC with input constraints for which fast algorithms exist, and can handle (possibly nonlinear) state and input constraints. Conditions are given that ensure recursive feasibility of the RGMPC scheme and finite-time convergence of the modified command to the the desired reference command. Simulation results for a spacecraft rendezvous maneuver with linear and nonlinear constraints demonstrate that the RGMPC scheme has lower average computational time as compared to state and input constrained MPC with similar performance.

We present an analysis of large-scale pretrained deep learning models used for cross-modal (text-to-audio) retrieval. We use embeddings extracted by these models in a metric learning framework to connect matching pairs of audio and text. Shallow neural networks map the embeddings to a common dimensionality. Our system, which is an extension of our submission to the Language-based Audio Retrieval Task of the DCASE Challenge 2022, employs the RoBERTa foundation model as the text embedding extractor. A pretrained PANNs model extracts the audio embeddings. To improve the generalisation of our model, we investigate how pretraining with audio and associated noisy text collected from the online platform Freesound improves the performance of our method. Furthermore, our ablation study reveals that the proper choice of the loss function and fine-tuning the pretrained models are essential in training a competitive retrieval system., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We demonstrate a new geometric method for fast template placement for searches for gravitational waves from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of compact binaries. The method is based on a binary tree decomposition of the template bank parameter space into non-overlapping hypercubes. We use a numerical approximation of the signal overlap metric at the center of each hypercube to estimate the number of templates required to cover the hypercube and determine whether to further split the hypercube. As long as the expected number of templates in a given cube is greater than a given threshold, we split the cube along its longest edge according to the metric. When the expected number of templates in a given hypercube drops below this threshold, the splitting stops and a template is placed at the center of the hypercube. Using this method, we generate aligned-spin template banks covering the mass range suitable for a search of Advanced LIGO data. The aligned-spin bank required ~24 CPU-hours and produced 2 million templates. In general, we find that other methods, namely stochastic placement, produces a more strictly bounded loss in match between waveforms, with the same minimal match between waveforms requiring about twice as many templates with our proposed algorithm. Though we note that the average match is higher, which would lead to a higher detection efficiency. Our primary motivation is not to strictly minimize the number of templates with this algorithm, but rather to produce a bank with useful geometric properties in the physical parameter space coordinates. Such properties are useful for population modeling and parameter estimation.

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
Approximate statistical inference via determination of the asymptotic distribution of a statistic is routinely used for inference in applied medical statistics (e.g. to estimate the standard error of the marginal or conditional risk ratio). One method for variance estimation is the classical Delta-method but there is a knowledge gap as this method is not routinely included in training for applied medical statistics and its uses are not widely understood. Given that a smooth function of an asymptotically normal estimator is also asymptotically normally distributed, the Delta-method allows approximating the large-sample variance of a function of an estimator with known large-sample properties. In a more general setting, it is a technique for approximating the variance of a functional (i.e., an estimand) that takes a function as an input and applies another function to it (e.g. the expectation function). Specifically, we may approximate the variance of the function using the functional Delta-method based on the influence function (IF). The IF explores how a functional $\phi(\theta)$ changes in response to small perturbations in the sample distribution of the estimator and allows computing the empirical standard error of the distribution of the functional. The ongoing development of new methods and techniques may pose a challenge for applied statisticians who are interested in mastering the application of these methods. In this tutorial, we review the use of the classical and functional Delta-method and their links to the IF from a practical perspective. We illustrate the methods using a cancer epidemiology example and we provide reproducible and commented code in R and Python using symbolic programming. This article aims to analyse the asset-backing risk of stablecoins, focusing on international accounting standards, classification criteria, and auditing standards and using Tether as a case study. It examines Tether’s issuance, backing, controls, ratios, and regulations to assess risk transmission and mitigation. The results suggest a need for unified and strengthened accounting and auditing standards to enhance user confidence. Liquidity, solvency, and debt ratios were applied to Tether’s balance sheets; while Tether has made efforts to increase its transparency, and although it possesses highly liquid assets, challenges remain regarding its liquidity, solvency, and debt. An independent auditors’ valuation is crucial for investor confidence, demonstrating that more specific regulations are required for stablecoins. Future research should explore other stablecoins to comprehensively understand the accounting and auditing challenges in the field.

ObjectiveIn 2022, several cases of ocular hypertension (OHT) related to EyeCee One preloaded IOLs were reported. The aim of this study was to determine the presurgical and surgical variables associated with this response. Methods and analysisAn analysis was conducted on patients who underwent isolated cataract surgery between September 2022 and December 2022 at the Hospital Universitario del Henares. The influence of potential factors was studied using the Kruskal–Wallis test and multiple regression analysis.ResultsA total of 353 cataract surgeries were included in the study. No significant differences between the different IOLs were found related to a change in the IOP on the first postoperative day (p = 0.395), but the change in the IOP after 1 month was higher in the EyeCee One group (p = 0.016). Approximately 6.1% of the patients who received EyeCee One had an IOP increase greater than 10 mmHg, compared to only 0.8% of the patients who received other IOLs. The odds ratio (OR) of experiencing an IOP increase greater than 10 mmHg in the EyeCee One group at the 1-month visit was 7.99 (1.52–41.99). The multiple regression analysis showed that receiving the EyeCee One lens was associated with a 2-mmHg increase in IOP. A previous history of glaucoma or OHT was not associated with greater IOP. Two patients in the EyeCee One group developed severe visual loss.ConclusionPatients who received the EyeCee One IOL experienced significant increases in IOP at the 1-month visit. A small number of patients might suffer visual loss secondary to the rise in IOP.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present a novel gravitational wave detection algorithm that conducts a matched filter search stochastically across the compact binary parameter space rather than relying on a fixed bank of template waveforms. This technique is competitive with standard template-bank-driven pipelines in both computational cost and sensitivity. However, the complexity of the analysis is simpler allowing for easy configuration and horizontal scaling across heterogeneous grids of computers. To demonstrate the method we analyze approximately one month of public LIGO data from July 27 00:00 2017 UTC - Aug 25 22:00 2017 UTC and recover eight known confident gravitational wave candidates. We also inject simulated binary black hole (BBH) signals to demonstrate the sensitivity., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We present a loosely coupled, non-iterative time-splitting scheme based on Robin-Robin coupling conditions. We apply a novel unified analysis for this scheme applied to both a Parabolic/Parabolic coupled system and a Parabolic/Hyperbolic coupled system. We show for both systems that the scheme is stable, and the error converges as $\mathcal{O}\big(\Delta t \sqrt{T +\log{\frac{1}{\Delta t}}}\big)$, where $\Delta t$ is the time step

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
We present a new approach for the mechanically consistent modelling and simulation of fluid-structure interactions with contact. The fundamental idea consists of combining a relaxed contact formulation with the modelling of seepage through a porous layer of co-dimension 1 during contact. For the latter, a Darcy model is considered in a thin porous layer attached to a solid boundary in the limit of infinitesimal thickness. In combination with a relaxation of the contact conditions the computational model is both mechanically consistent and simple to implement. We analyse the approach in detailed numerical studies with both thick- and thin-walled solids, within a fully Eulerian and an immersed approach for the fluid-structure interaction and using fitted and unfitted finite element discretisations.
