Research shows that the global society as organized today, with our current technological and economic system, is impossible to sustain. We are living in the Anthropocene, an era in which human activities in highly industrialized countries are responsible for overshooting several planetary boundaries, with poorer communities contributing least to the problems but being impacted the most. At the same time, technical and economic gains fail to provide society at large with equal opportunities and improved quality of life. This paper describes approaches taken in computing education to address the issue of sustainability. It presents results of a systematic review of literature on sustainability in computing education. From a set of 572 publications extracted from six large digital libraries plus snowballing, we distilled and analyzed the 90 relevant primary studies. Using an inductive and deductive thematic analysis, we study 1) conceptions of sustainability, computing, and education, 2) implementations of sustainability in computing education, and 3) research on sustainability in computing education. We present a framework capturing learning objectives and outcomes as well as pedagogical methods for sustainability in computing education. These results can be mapped to existing standards and curricula in future work. We find that only a few of the articles engage with the challenges as calling for drastic systemic change, along with radically new understandings of computing and education. We suggest that future research should connect to the substantial body of critical theory such as feminist theory of science and technology. Data preservation is a mandatory specification for any present and future experimental facility and it is a cost-effective way of doing fundamental research by exploiting unique data sets in the light of the continuously increasing theoretical understanding. This document summarizes the status of data preservation in high energy physics. The paradigms and the methodological advances are discussed from a perspective of more than ten years of experience with a structured effort at international level. The status and the scientific return related to the preservation of data accumulated at large collider experiments are presented, together with an account of ongoing efforts to ensure long-term analysis capabilities for ongoing and future experiments. Transverse projects aimed at generic solutions, most of which are specifically inspired by open science and FAIR principles, are presented as well. A prospective and an action plan are also indicated.

As the number of smart devices that surround us increases, so do the opportunities to create smart socially-aware systems. In this context, mobile devices can be used to collect data about students and to better understand how their day-to-day routines can influence their academic performance. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic led to new challenges and difficulties, also for students, with considerable impact on their lifestyle. In this paper we present a dataset collected using a smartphone application (ISABELA), which include passive data (e.g., activity and location) as well as self-reported data from questionnaires. We present several tests with different machine learning models, in order to classify students' performance. These tests were carried out using different time windows, showing that weekly time windows lead to better prediction and classification results than monthly time windows. Furthermore, it is shown that the created models can predict student performance even with data collected from different contexts, namely before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. SVMs, XGBoost and AdaBoost-SAMME with Random Forest were found to be the best algorithms, showing an accuracy greater than 78%. Additionally, we propose a pipeline that uses a decision level median voting algorithm to further improve the models' performance, by using historic data from the students to further improve the prediction. As the number of smart devices that surround us increases, so do the opportunities to leverage them to create socially- and context-aware systems. Smart devices can be used for better understanding human behaviour and its societal implications. As an example of a scenario in which the role of socially aware systems is crucial, consider the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In this paper we present an innovative Humanin-The-Loop Cyber Physical system that can collect passive data from people, such as physical activity, sleep information, and discrete location, as well as collect self-reported data, and provide individualised user feedback. In this paper, we also present a three and a half months field trial implemented in Portugal. This trial was part of a larger scope project that was supported by the Portuguese National Health System, to evaluate the indicators and effects of the pandemic. Results concerning various applications usage statistics are presented, comparing the most used applications, their objective and their usage pattern in work/non-work periods. Additionally,the time-lagged cross correlation between some of the collected metrics, Covid events, and media news, are explored. This type of applications can be used not only in the context of Covid but also in future pandemics, to assist individuals in self-regulation of their contagion risk, based on personalized information, while also function as a means for raising self-awareness of risks related to psychological wellbeing., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures and 4 tables

To investigate the structural changes upon thermal treatment of resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL) interfacial layer in rubber-cord flexible composite, a multiscale approach has been employed. High-resolution AFM mapping showed a significant increase of the modulus of the RF phase from 1.2 GPa to 2.3 GPa and latex phase (L) from 0.3 GPa to 0.8 GPa after a thermal exposure at 100{\deg}C for 10 days. The increase of the RF and L phases elastic modulus was correlated with the increase of the oxygen content in RFL layer based on the measurements by SEM-EDX. Besides by combining finite element simulations and AFM modulus profiling, the presence of an interphase region (over 280 nm) between the RFL and the rubber regions was identified and was not deteriorated by the thermal treatment. Peel adhesion testing revealed that the increase of RF and L phases rigidity after thermal treatment was detrimental for the interfacial adhesion of the rubber composite., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

A sunspot catalogue was published by the Coimbra Astronomical Observatory (Portugal), now named Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra, for the period 1929-1941. We digitalized data included in that catalogue and provide a machine-readable version. We show the reconstructions for the (total and hemispheric) sunspot number index and sunspot area according to this catalogue, comparing it with the sunspot number index (version 2) and Balmaceda sunspot area series (Balmaceda et al., J. Geophys. Res. 114, A07104, 2009). Moreover, we also compared the Coimbra catalogue with records made at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The results demonstrate that the historical catalogue compiled by the Coimbra Astronomical Observatory contain reliable sunspot data and therefore can be considered for studies about solar activity.

A detailed analysis of three pendular motion models is presented. Inertial effects, self-oscillation, and memory, together with non-constant moment of inertia, hysteresis and negative damping are shown to be required for the comprehensive description of the free pendulum oscillatory regime. The effects of very high initial amplitudes, friction in the roller bearing axle, drag, and pendulum geometry are also analysed and discussed. Full-disk spectroheliograms have been taken in Coimbra on a daily basis since 1926 in the Ca II K-line (K1 and K3). Later, in 1989, with the upgrade of the equipment it was possible to start the observations in the H-alpha line. The spectroheliograms of Coimbra constitutes a huge dataset of solar images, which requires an efficient automatic tool to detect and analyse solar activity features. This work presents a mathematical morphology approach applied to the CaII K3 series. The objective is to create a tool based on the segmentation by watershed transform combined with other morphological operators to detect automatically and analyse chromospheric plages during the solar cycle 24. The tool is validated by comparing its results for cycle 23 with those presented by Dorotovic et al. (2007, 2010). The results obtained are in very good agreement with those, including on images obtained in non-ideal meteorological conditions (eg. some clouds in sky). The results were also qualitatively compared with the results obtained through the application of ASSA model to SDO HMI magnetograms.

The dark colors of Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt (NEB, $7-17^\circ$N) appeared to expand northward into the neighboring zone in 2015, consistent with a 3-5 year cycle of activity in the NEB. Inversions of thermal-IR imaging from the Very Large Telescope revealed a moderate warming and reduction of aerosol opacity at the cloud tops at $17-20^\circ$N, suggesting subsidence and drying in the expanded sector. Two new thermal waves were identified during this period: (i) an upper tropospheric thermal wave (wavenumber 16-17, amplitude 2.5 K at 170 mbar) in the mid-NEB that was anti-correlated with haze reflectivity; and (ii) a stratospheric wave (wavenumber 13-14, amplitude 7.3 K at 5 mbar) at $20-30^\circ$N. The present work reports the study of the optimized processing conditions of Bi0.9La0.1Fe0.9Mn0.1O3 thin films, grown by RF sputtering on platinum metalized silicon substrates. The combination of deposition at relatively low substrate temperature followed by adequate ex situ annealing leads to thin films with smooth surface morphology and the formation of a high-quality monophasic layer, with the (100)c preferable orientation. The annealed films show ferroelectric imprint.
