1. Extension of the Injected-Absorbed-Current Method applied to DC-DC Converters with Input Filter, Output Post-filter and Feedforward Compensations

Abstract

In railway applications, it is common to use an LC filter connected between the catenary and the input port of the main converter of the auxiliary and traction systems. In addition, in the auxiliary systems, there is a converter operating as a battery charger, which requires a very low ripple in the output current and output voltage, so a postfilter may be placed at the output port of the converter. This article proposes a step-by-step methodology to extend the injected-absorbed-current (IAC) method in order to obtain transfer functions that consider the effects of the input filter, output postfilter, and some feedforward compensations. The proposed methodology allows reusing the characteristic coefficients of the DC-DC converter model derived from the existing IAC method. One of the advantages of the proposed methodology is that the transfer functions obtained in this article are valid for cases where both, one or none of the filters, are implemented. Finally, for the experimental validation of the proposed methodology, the phase-shifted full-bridge converter was selected as a convenient example. Abstract

Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Hard computational tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their simulation, analysis, and data resources. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions., Comment: 60 pages, 14 figures; comments welcome

7. Optical mirages from spinless beams

Abstract

Spin-orbit interactions of light are ubiquitous in multiple branches of nanophotonics, including optical wave localization. In that framework, it is widely accepted that circularly polarized beams lead to spin-dependent apparent shifts of dipolar targets commonly referred to as optical mirages. In contrast, these optical mirages vanish when the illumination comes from a spinless beam such as a linearly polarized wave. Here we show that optical localization errors emerge for particles sustaining electric and magnetic dipolar response under the illumination of spinless beams. As an example, we calculate the optical mirage for the scattering by a high refractive index nanosphere under the illumination of a linearly polarized plane wave carrying null spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. Our results point to an overlooked interference between the electric and magnetic dipoles rather than the spin-orbit interactions of light as the origin for the tilted position of the nanosphere.

8. Retention of Students Ahead of the Change from Virtual to Face to Face Classes: Case Study from the Commercial Engineering Department

Abstract

The academic performance of our students is being presented as a permanent challenge for the academy due to its complex directly associated with the results of learning. So then, it originates the question: do academics' methodological innovation efforts impact academic performance? To answer this question, we present the results taken from these innovations applied to a Commercial Engineering course at Universidad de Antofagasta. Considering a universe of 251 students in a 4-year time horizon (2018-2021). It is proposed a teaching plan with digital resources for learning and centered in students increasing the interaction with resources and with peers. The goal of the innovation is to improve the average grade point average by at least 5% and the failure rate (will decrease) by at least 15%. The innovation in the subject has increased the percentage of approved and the participation in lessons.

10. Measurement errors in the use of smartphones as low-cost forestry hypsometers

Abstract

Various applications currently available for Android allow the estimation of tree heights by using the 3D accelerometer on smartphones. Some make the estimation using the image on the screen, while in others, by pointing with the edges of the terminal. The present study establishes the measurement errors obtained with HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy Note compared to those from Blume Leiss and Vertex IV. Six series of 12 measurements each were made with each hypsometer (for heights of 6 m, 8 m, 10 m and 12 m). A Kruskall Wallis test is applied to the relative errors to determine whether there are significant differences between the devices. The results indicate that the errors of the uncalibrated smartphones significantly exceed those of traditional forestry apparatus. However, calibration is a very easy procedure that can be done by means of a linear regression line between real angles (obtained with a Digital Angle Finder or with a series of measurements taken independently of the experiment), and the angles of the accelerometer. With this adjustment, the smartphones achieve adequate quality levels although the bias was not totally eliminated. The relative errors when pointing with the edges of the terminal show no significant differences compared to Blume Leiss. Applications that use the screen image give better results (no significant differences were detected with Vertex). There is currently no application that offers calibration of the linear regression slope, which is an essential requirement for ensuring the accuracy of height measurements obtained with smartphones.

Abstract

We present an algorithm which efficiently estimates the intrinsic long-term value of a portfolio of assets on a quantum computer. The method relies on quantum amplitude estimation to estimate the mean of a novel implementation of the Gordon-Shapiro formula. The choice of loading and readout algorithms makes it possible to price a five-asset portfolio on present day quantum computers, a feat which has not been realised using quantum computing to date. We compare results from two available trapped ion quantum computers. Abstract

High refractive index dielectric spheres present remarkable light-scattering properties in the spectral range dominated by dipolar modes. However, most of these properties are absent for larger spheres under plane wave illumination. Here, we propose to unravel dipolar regimes regardless of the sphere size and refractive index by illuminating with a pure dipolar field. This type of illumination ensures that the scattering response of the sphere is purely dipolar. In this scenario, we show that Kerker conditions are not only related to duality symmetry and a strong backward-to-forward asymmetric light-scattering, but also to the appearance of non-radiating sources: the so-called hybrid anapoles. Finally, we show that all the abovementioned scattering features under dipolar illumination are reproducible with an experimentally accessible tightly-focused Gaussian beam.

Abstract

We present and verify experimentally a universal theoretical framework for the description of spin-charge interconversion in non-magnetic metal/insulator structures with interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC). Our formulation is based on drift-diffusion equations supplemented with generalized boundary conditions. The latter encode the effects of ISOC and relate the electronic transport in such systems to spin loss and spin-charge interconversion at the interface, which are parameterized, respectively, by $G_{\parallel/\perp}$ and $\sigma_{\rm{sc/cs}}$. We demonstrate that the conversion efficiency depends solely on these interfacial parameters. We apply our formalism to two typical spintronic devices that exploit ISOC: a lateral spin valve and a multilayer Hall bar, for which we calculate the non-local resistance and the spin Hall magnetoresistance, respectively. Finally, we perform measurements on these two devices with a BiO$_x$/Cu interface and verify that transport properties related to the ISOC are quantified by the same set of interfacial parameters.

Abstract

The directionality and polarization of light show peculiar properties when the scattering by a dielectric sphere can be described exclusively by electric and magnetic dipolar modes. Particularly, when these modes oscillate in-phase with equal amplitude, at the so-called first Kerker condition, the zero optical backscattering condition emerges for non-dissipating spheres. However, the role of absorption and optical gain in the first Kerker condition remains unexplored. In this work, we demonstrate that either absorption or optical gain precludes the first Kerker condition and, hence, the absence of backscattered radiation light, regardless of the size of the particle, incident wavelength, and incoming polarization. Finally, we derive the necessary prerequisites of the second Kerker condition of the zero forward light scattering, finding that optical gain is a compulsory requirement.

Abstract

Controlling the electromagnetic helicity and directionality of the light scattered by dielectric particles is paramount to a variety of phenomenology of interest in all-dielectric optics and photonics. In this Letter, we show that the conservation of the electromagnetic helicity in the scattering by high-index dielectric Mie spheres can be used as a probe of pure-multipolar spectral regions, particularly, of dipolar nature, beyond its presumed spectral interval. This finding reveals that the dipolar behavior is not necessarily limited to small particles, in striking contrast to the current state of the art. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the optimum forward light scattering condition, predicted for a particular nano-sphere in the limit of small particle, is fulfilled in fact at a fixed x size parameter for an infinite number of refractive indexes

Abstract

We discuss the response of an rf-SQUID formed by anomalous Josephson junctions embedded in a superconducting ring with a non-negligible inductance. We demonstrate that a properly sweeping in-plane magnetic field can cause both the total flux and the current circulating in the device to modulate and to behave hysteretically. The bistable response of the system is analyzed as a function of the anomalous phase shift at different values of the screening parameter, in order to highlight the parameter range within which a hysteretic behavior can be observed. The magnetic flux piercing the SQUID ring is demonstrated to further modulate the hysteretical response of the system. Moreover, we show that the anomalous phase shift can be conveniently determined through the measurement of the out-of-plane magnetic field at which the device switches to the voltage state and the number of trapped flux quanta changes. Finally, we compare the response of two different device configurations, namely, a SQUID including only one or two anomalous junctions.
