1. Fine-tuning LLMs for Autonomous Spacecraft Control: A Case Study Using Kerbal Space Program

Abstract

Recent trends are emerging in the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) as autonomous agents that take actions based on the content of the user text prompt. This study explores the use of fine-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) for autonomous spacecraft control, using the Kerbal Space Program Differential Games suite (KSPDG) as a testing environment. Traditional Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches face limitations in this domain due to insufficient simulation capabilities and data. By leveraging LLMs, specifically fine-tuning models like GPT-3.5 and LLaMA, we demonstrate how these models can effectively control spacecraft using language-based inputs and outputs. Our approach integrates real-time mission telemetry into textual prompts processed by the LLM, which then generate control actions via an agent. The results open a discussion about the potential of LLMs for space operations beyond their nominal use for text-related tasks. Future work aims to expand this methodology to other space control tasks and evaluate the performance of different LLM families. 2. Exploring Scalability in Large-Scale Time Series in DeepVATS framework

Abstract

Visual analytics is essential for studying large time series due to its ability to reveal trends, anomalies, and insights. DeepVATS is a tool that merges Deep Learning (Deep) with Visual Analytics (VA) for the analysis of large time series data (TS). It has three interconnected modules. The Deep Learning module, developed in R, manages the load of datasets and Deep Learning models from and to the Storage module. This module also supports models training and the acquisition of the embeddings from the latent space of the trained model. The Storage module operates using the Weights and Biases system. Subsequently, these embeddings can be analyzed in the Visual Analytics module. This module, based on an R Shiny application, allows the adjustment of the parameters related to the projection and clustering of the embeddings space. Once these parameters are set, interactive plots representing both the embeddings, and the time series are shown. This paper introduces the tool and examines its scalability through log analytics. The execution time evolution is examined while the length of the time series is varied. Abstract

The Three-Body Problem has fascinated scientists for centuries and it has been crucial in the design of modern space missions. Recent developments in Generative Artificial Intelligence hold transformative promise for addressing this longstanding problem. This work investigates the use of Variational Autoencoder (VAE) and its internal representation to generate periodic orbits. We utilize a comprehensive dataset of periodic orbits in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) to train deep-learning architectures that capture key orbital characteristics, and we set up physical evaluation metrics for the generated trajectories. Abstract

In this work we consider the Lagrangian properties of a random version of the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) in a three-dimensional periodic box. We prove that the associated flow map possesses a positive top Lyapunov exponent and its associated one-point, two-point and projective Markov chains are geometrically ergodic. For a passive scalar, it follows that such a velocity is a space-time smooth exponentially mixing field, uniformly in the diffusivity coefficient. 5. Enhancing Solar Driver Forecasting with Multivariate Transformers

Abstract

In this work, we develop a comprehensive framework for F10.7, S10.7, M10.7, and Y10.7 solar driver forecasting with a time series Transformer (PatchTST). To ensure an equal representation of high and low levels of solar activity, we construct a custom loss function to weight samples based on the distance between the solar driver's historical distribution and the training set. The solar driver forecasting framework includes an 18-day lookback window and forecasts 6 days into the future. When benchmarked against the Space Environment Technologies (SET) dataset, our model consistently produces forecasts with a lower standard mean error in nearly all cases, with improved prediction accuracy during periods of high solar activity. 6. Twisted holography on AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times K3$ & the planar chiral algebra

Abstract

In this work, we revisit and elaborate on twisted holography for AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times X$ with $X= T^4$, K3, with a particular focus on K3. We describe the twist of supergravity, identify the corresponding (generalization of) BCOV theory, and enumerate twisted supergravity states. We use this knowledge, and the technique of Koszul duality, to obtain the $N \rightarrow \infty$, or planar, limit of the chiral algebra of the dual CFT. The resulting symmetries are strong enough to fix planar 2 and 3-point functions in the twisted theory or, equivalently, in a 1/4-BPS subsector of the original duality. This technique can in principle be used to compute corrections to the chiral algebra perturbatively in $1/N$., Comment: 90 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Recent trends are emerging in the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) as autonomous agents that take actions based on the content of the user text prompts. We intend to apply these concepts to the field of Guidance, Navigation, and Control in space, enabling LLMs to have a significant role in the decision-making process for autonomous satellite operations. As a first step towards this goal, we have developed a pure LLM-based solution for the Kerbal Space Program Differential Games (KSPDG) challenge, a public software design competition where participants create autonomous agents for maneuvering satellites involved in non-cooperative space operations, running on the KSP game engine. Our approach leverages prompt engineering, few-shot prompting, and fine-tuning techniques to create an effective LLM-based agent that ranked 2nd in the competition. To the best of our knowledge, this work pioneers the integration of LLM agents into space research. 8. A revision on Multi-Criteria Decision Making methods for Multi-UAV Mission Planning Support

Abstract

Over the last decade, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been extensively used in many commercial applications due to their manageability and risk avoidance. One of the main problems considered is the Mission Planning for multiple UAVs, where a solution plan must be found satisfying the different constraints of the problem. This problem has multiple variables that must be optimized simultaneously, such as the makespan, the cost of the mission or the risk. Therefore, the problem has a lot of possible optimal solutions, and the operator must select the final solution to be executed among them. In order to reduce the workload of the operator in this decision process, a Decision Support System (DSS) becomes necessary. In this work, a DSS consisting of ranking and filtering systems, which order and reduce the optimal solutions, has been designed. With regard to the ranking system, a wide range of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, including some fuzzy MCDM, are compared on a multi-UAV mission planning scenario, in order to study which method could fit better in a multi-UAV decision support system. Expert operators have evaluated the solutions returned, and the results show, on the one hand, that fuzzy methods generally achieve better average scores, and on the other, that all of the tested methods perform better when the preferences of the operators are biased towards a specific variable, and worse when their preferences are balanced. For the filtering system, a similarity function based on the proximity of the solutions has been designed, and on top of that, a threshold is tuned empirically to decide how to filter solutions without losing much of the hypervolume of the space of solutions., Comment: Preprint submitted and acepted in Expert Systems with Applications

Abstract

With the rapid increase in the number of Anthropogenic Space Objects (ASOs), Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is facing significant congestion, thereby posing challenges to space operators and risking the viability of the space environment for varied uses. Current models for examining this evolution, while detailed, are computationally demanding. To address these issues, we propose a novel machine learning-based model, as an extension of the MIT Orbital Capacity Tool (MOCAT). This advanced model is designed to accelerate the propagation of ASO density distributions, and it is trained on hundreds of simulations generated by an established and accurate model of the space environment evolution. We study how different deep learning-based solutions can potentially be good candidates for ASO propagation and manage the high-dimensionality of the data. 10. Self-supervised Machine Learning Based Approach to Orbit Modelling Applied to Space Traffic Management

This paper presents a novel methodology for improving the performance of machine learning based space traffic management tasks through the use of a pre-trained orbit model. Taking inspiration from BERT-like self-supervised language models in the field of natural language processing, we introduce ORBERT, and demonstrate the ability of such a model to leverage large quantities of readily available orbit data to learn meaningful representations that can be used to aid in downstream tasks. As a proof of concept of this approach we consider the task of all vs. all conjunction screening, phrased here as a machine learning time series classification task. As the peak of the solar cycle approaches in 2025 and the ability of a single geomagnetic storm to significantly alter the orbit of Resident Space Objects (RSOs), techniques for atmospheric density forecasting are vital for space situational awareness. While linear data-driven methods, such as dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc), have been used previously for forecasting atmospheric density, deep learning-based forecasting has the ability to capture nonlinearities in data. By learning multiple layer weights from historical atmospheric density data, long-term dependencies in the dataset are captured in the mapping between the current atmospheric density state and control input to the atmospheric density state at the next timestep. This work improves upon previous linear propagation methods for atmospheric density forecasting, by developing a nonlinear transformer-based architecture for atmospheric density forecasting. In this paper, we will prove that the logics of the family $\textsf{Ciu}^n$:=$\{Ciu^n\}_{n \in \omega}$ of paraconsistent Ciuciura{'}s Logics (defined by means of bivaluations) can be alternatively defined by means of finite matrices. This result arises from the characterization of the truth-values of the involved matrices (relative to each $Ciu^n$-logic) as being specific finite sequences of elements of the set $2$ := $\{0,1\}$. 14. DeepVATS: Deep Visual Analytics for Time Series

Abstract

The field of Deep Visual Analytics (DVA) has recently arisen from the idea of developing Visual Interactive Systems supported by deep learning, in order to provide them with large-scale data processing capabilities and to unify their implementation across different data and domains. In this paper we present DeepVATS, an open-source tool that brings the field of DVA into time series data. DeepVATS trains, in a self-supervised way, a masked time series autoencoder that reconstructs patches of a time series, and projects the knowledge contained in the embeddings of that model in an interactive plot, from which time series patterns and anomalies emerge and can be easily spotted. The tool includes a back-end for data processing pipeline and model training, as well as a front-end with a interactive user interface. We report on results that validate the utility of DeepVATS, running experiments on both synthetic and real datasets. 15. Fibring by functions as a method for combining matrix logics

Abstract

We present in this paper an adaptation of the process of combination of logics known as fibring introduced by D. Gabbay. We are focused on the combination of two logics defined by matrix semantics, and based on pairs of functions that relate the logics to be combined. A number of technical results are proved. Among them, we demonstrate that the fibring of two matrix logics is also a matrix one. In addition, we prove that fibring is a (weak) conservative extension of the original logics, and we give conditions for such extension to be strong. We study the implicit upwind finite volume scheme for numerically approximating the advection-diffusion equation with a vector field in the low regularity DiPerna-Lions setting. That is, we are concerned with advecting velocity fields that are spatially Sobolev regular and data that are merely integrable. 20. An implementation of the 'Guess who?' game using CLIP

Abstract

CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining) is an efficient method for learning computer vision tasks from natural language supervision that has powered a recent breakthrough in deep learning due to its zero-shot transfer capabilities. By training from image-text pairs available on the internet, the CLIP model transfers non-trivially to most tasks without the need for any data set specific training. In this work, we use CLIP to implement the engine of the popular game "Guess who?", so that the player interacts with the game using natural language prompts and CLIP automatically decides whether an image in the game board fulfills that prompt or not. Abstract

We present a new computation in a field-theoretical model of Coulomb gauge QCD of the first radial and angular excitations of a qqq system in a SU(3) flavor singlet state, Lambda_S. The traditional motivation for the study is that the absence of flavor singlets in the lowest-lying spectrum is a direct consequence of the color degree of freedom. (The calculation is tested with decuplet baryons Delta(1232) and Omega(1672).) We also analyze decay branching fractions of the flavor singlet baryon for various masses with the simplest effective Lagrangians., Comment: 19 pages, 17 plots

In this paper, the logics of the family ${\mathbb{I}}^n {\mathbb{P}}^k$:=$\{{ I^n P^k}\}_{(n,k) \in \omega^2}$ are formally defined by means of finite matrices, as a simultaneous generalization of the weakly-intuitionistic logic $I^1$ and of the paraconsistent logic $P^1$. Abstract

Background: The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are increasing around the world, especially in Western countries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the health habits of healthy controls and individuals with IBDs to identify possible risk factors for IBD development. Methods: A case-control study was conducted among Spanish participants over 18 years of age. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by subjects to collect information on several sociodemographic variables and habits, such as the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents and macronutrients; anxiety and depression; and quality of life. Results: The main risk factors identified were age; living in an urban environment; anxiety; and excessive consumption of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. In addition, the consumption of fibre had a preventive effect against IBD development. Conclusions: Age, anxiety and living in urban areas pose a risk of suffering from IBD, as does the excessive consumption of certain macronutrients. Abstract

Natural proteins are frequently marginally stable, and an increase in environmental temperature can easily lead to unfolding. As a result, protein engineering to improve protein stability is an area of intensive research. Nonetheless, since there is usually a high degree of structural homology between proteins from thermophilic organisms and their mesophilic counterparts, the identification of structural determinants for thermoadaptation is challenging. Moreover, in many cases, it has become clear that the success of stabilization strategies is often dependent on the evolutionary history of a protein family. In the last few years, the use of ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) as a tool for elucidation of the evolutionary history of functional traits of a protein family has gained strength. Here, we used ASR to trace the evolutionary pathways between mesophilic and thermophilic kinases that participate in the biosynthetic pathway of vitamin B1 in bacteria. By combining biophysics approaches, X-ray crystallography, and molecular dynamics simulations, we found that the thermal stability of these enzymes correlates with their kinetic stability, where the highest thermal/kinetic stability is given by an increase in small hydrophobic amino acids that allow a higher number of interatomic hydrophobic contacts, making this type of interaction the main support for stability in this protein architecture. The results highlight the potential benefits of using ASR to explore the evolutionary history of protein sequence and structure to identify traits responsible for the kinetic and thermal stability of any protein architecture. Abstract

A significant increase in the number of anthropogenic objects in Earth orbit has necessitated the development of satellite conjunction assessment and collision avoidance capabilities for new spacecraft. Neutral mass density variability in the thermosphere, driven by enhanced geomagnetic activity and solar EUV absorption, is a major source of satellite propagation error. This work investigates the impacts of space weather driver forecasting uncertainty on satellite drag and collision avoidance maneuver decision‐making. Since most operational space weather driver forecasts do not offer an uncertainty assessment, the satellite operator community is left to make dangerous assumptions about the trustworthiness of the forecast models they use to perform satellite state propagation. Climatological persistence‐based forecast models are developed for F10.7 and Kp. These models accurately capture the heteroscedastic and, at times, highly non‐Gaussian uncertainty distribution on forecasts of the drivers of interest. A set of realistic satellite conjunction scenarios is simulated to demonstrate the contributions of space weather driver forecast uncertainty on the probability of collision and maneuver decisions. Improved driver forecasts, especially forecasts of F10.7, are demonstrated to be very useful for enabling durable maneuver decisions with additional lead time (up to 24 hr for the period examined), though the improvement depends on the specific conjunction scenario of interest. This paper traces space weather forecasting ability directly to impacts on satellite maneuver decision‐making and finds that forecast uncertainty plays a critical role in making durable maneuver decisions.
