Emotional conventions lead to a collective priming of some categories of emotion. For example, New Year Eve's emotional conventions prime words such as 'happy.' We define emotional atmosphere and emotional climate as emotion accessibility caused by the priming of specific categories of emotion linked to emotional conventions. We report two sets of data in support of this approach: (1) the accessibility of categories of emotion in relation to unusual historical events (the 1992 World Expo in Seville and the March-April 2004 terrorist attacks in Madrid), and (2) the differential priming of specific categories of emotion on the Internet in different countries. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of this approach to 'emotional climate.' Abstract

We measured facial behaviors shown by participants in a laboratory study in which a film was used to elicit intense emotions. Participants provided subjective reports of their emotions and their faces were recorded by a concealed camera. We did not find the coherence claimed by other authors (e.g., Rosenberg & Ekman, 1994) between the displayed facial expressions and subjective reports of emotion. We thus concluded that certain emotions are not a necessary or sufficient precondition of certain spontaneous expressions.

Abstract

All facial behavior displayed by 22 Olympic gold medalists during their awards ceremonies was codified. The awards ceremony contains one stage in which the medalist interacts with others and two noninteractive stages. Observers (including 10 other gold medalists)judged the emotional experience of the gold medalists to be intense happiness throughout the ceremony. However, smiles were frequent only during the interactive stage. As predicted by behavioral ecological theories of facial behavior, happiness was not sufficient for smiling.

Abstract

This paper explores the feasibility of three possible causes for the higher influence of expressive information compared to context information on the ascription of emotions: lack of biographical experience in situations described by the contextual information (Experiment 1), lack of instruction on categorizing contexts in terms of words that describe emotions in facial expressions (Experiment 2), and insufficient enhancement of the contextual source of information (Experiment 3). Experiments followed Wallbott's version (Wallbott, 1988) of Goodenough and Tinker's procedure (Goodenough & Tinker, 1931). Results of Experiments 1 and 3 suggest that the different weights of expression and context in the Goodenough and Tinker ascription task are not determined by inexperience or lack of differentiation of the contextual information with respect to the expression. According to Experiment 2, these differences might be due to subjects' lack of specific experience on categorizing contextual information in terms of emotions.

Abstract

This chapter examines the relation between the Five Factor Model of personality and momentary affect in five languages, based on a pooled sample of 2070 (N̲ for English = 535, N̲ for Spanish = 233, N̲ for Chinese = 487, N̲ for Japanese = 450, N̲ for Korean = 365). Affect is described with a two-dimensional space that integrates major dimensional models in English and that replicates well in all five languages. Personality is systematically linked to affect similarly (although not identically) across languages, but not in a way consistent with the claim that Positive Activation and Negative Activation are more basic; indeed, Pleasant versus Unpleasant and Activated versus Deactivated came closer to the personality dimensions.
