Aim Zooplankton functional groups play an important role in lake functioning and can readily respond to environmental changes and may be associated with phytoplankton changes. In warmer regions, zooplankton species have a smaller body size, which decreases their grazing capacity, attenuating top-down control throughout phytoplankton. We evaluated changes in density and biomass of zooplankton functional groups and their relationship with algal groups in horizontal reservoir zonation (pelagic, sublittoral, and eulittoral zones) of the shallow reservoir. We hypothesize that the density and biomass of zooplankton functional groups are associated with fluctuations in the phytoplankton groups in horizontal reservoir zonation. Methods Changes in the structure of the zooplankton functional group and the controlling limnological variables were verified at three sampling stations: pelagic, sublittoral, and eulittoral zones in a mesotrophic reservoir. Results Zooplankton species were distributed in seven functional groups. The density and biomass of zooplankton functional groups were not clearly associated with biomass variations of phytoplankton groups. However, the zooplankton functional groups were associated with horizontal reservoir zonation, where specific groups were found in the pelagic, sublittoral, and eulittoral zones. Conclusions The zooplankton functional groups were related to the horizontal zonation of the reservoir but were not associated with changes in the phytoplankton groups due to the dominance of small organisms. Resumo: Objetivo Os grupos funcionais do zooplâncton desempenham um papel importante no funcionamento dos lagos, são capazes de responder prontamente às mudanças ambientais e podem estar associados às mudanças no fitoplâncton. Em regiões mais quentes, as espécies de zooplâncton apresentam pequeno tamanho corporal, o que diminui sua capacidade de pastejo e atenua o controle de cima para baixo sobre o fitoplâncton. Avaliamos as mudanças na densidade e biomassa de grupos funcionais do zooplâncton e sua relação com grupos de algas na zonação horizontal de um reservatório raso (zona pelágica, sublitoral e eulitoral). Nossa hipótese é que a densidade e biomassa dos grupos funcionais do zooplâncton estão associadas a flutuações nos grupos do fitoplâncton no zoneamento horizontal do reservatório. Métodos Em um reservatório mesotrófico, as alterações na estrutura do grupo funcional do zooplâncton e nas variáveis limnológicas foram avaliadas em três zonas de amostragem: pelágica, sublitoral e eulitoral. Resultados As espécies de zooplâncton foram distribuídas em sete grupos funcionais. Evidenciou-se que a densidade e a biomassa dos grupos funcionais do zooplâncton não foram claramente associadas às variações da biomassa dos grupos do fitoplâncton. No entanto, os grupos funcionais do zooplâncton foram associados à zonação horizontal do reservatório, onde grupos específicos foram encontrados na zona pelágica, sublitoral e eulitoral. Conclusões Os grupos funcionais do zooplâncton foram relacionados com a zonação horizontal do reservatório, mas não foram associados às mudanças nos grupos do fitoplâncton devido à dominância de organismos de pequeno porte.

Aim Fish diversity in two lentic environments: a lake connected (Barbosa lake) to a river and an artificial reservoir (Ninfeias reservoir) were determined in the dry and rainy periods in 2015. We expected to find more diversity in the connected lake and greater abundance in the reservoir. Methods Specimens were caught using gill nets. Moreover, environmental parameters such as temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen and water transparency were measured during the two periods. Results 546 specimens were collected from 9 families, 12 genera and 15 species of the orders Characiformes, Siluriformes, Cichliformes and Gymnotiformes. Pimelodus maculatus was the most abundant species in the connected lake. Two species were caught from the reservoir: Geophagus brasiliensis and Hoplias malabaricus, the former being predominant. The dominant species in the studied environments corresponded to 48.71% of the total number of specimens. The ichthyofaunal composition from the lake showed a high richness of the order Characiformes (66.7%). Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes represented 13.3% each and the order Cichliformes only 6.7% of the total number of species. The IAG Lake is a small, oligotrophic, and shallow reservoir located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Biological Reserve, south of Municipality of Sao Paulo, southeast Brazil. The study of the phytoplankton community dynamics is based on samples collected along the vertical profile of the water column in the pelagic region of the reservoir (Zmax = 4.7 m), 3 times a day (7 h, 13 h, and 19 h) during 7 consecutive days of the dry period (20-26 August 1996) and of the rainy period (22- 28 January 1997), but at 5 depths during the dry period and at 4 depths during the rainy one. The relationships among species richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance were discussed within the Connell's Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH). The responses of the descriptive species in the community and C-R-S strategies were studied. The variation of the mixing zone was the main factor responsible for the changes in the community structure as well as for the maintenance of the diversity during both climate periods. The disturbance was considered of high frequency during the dry period and of intermediate frequency during the rainy one. The diversity was higher during the rainy period, confirming the IDH, at least during the present study. Peridinium gatunense Nygaard was dominant in most sample units during the dry period. During the rainy one, Chlamydomonas debaryana Goroschankin and Oocystis lacustris Chodat were the species that contributed the most. Regarding the functional groups, S-strategists dominated the dry period, differing from the rainy one, when the functional diversity was higher. In conclusion, changes in the phytoplankton community structure were well explained by Connell's IDH. El lago IAG es un embalse pequeño, oligotrófico y somero, ubicado en la Reserva Biológica del Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, Sur de la Municipalidad de Sao Paulo, sureste del Brasil. El estudio de la dinámica de la comunidad fitoplanctónica está basado en muestras colectadas al largo del perfil vertical de la columna de agua en la región pelágica del embalse (Zmax = 4.7 m), 3 veces al día (7 h, 13 h y 19 h) durante 7 días consecutivos de los períodos seco (20-26 Agosto 1996) y húmedo (22-28 Enero 1997), pero en 5 profundidades durante el período seco y en 4 durante el húmedo. Las relaciones entre riqueza de especies, diversidad, equitabilidad y dominancia fueron discutidos dentro de la Hipótesis de Connell de la Perturbación Intermedia (HPI). Las respuestas de las especies descriptoras de la comunidad y estrategias C-R-S fueron estudiadas. La variación de la zona de mezcla fue el factor más importante en los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad así como para el mantenimiento de la diversidad durante los dos períodos climáticos. La perturbación fue considerada de frecuencia alta durante el período seco y de frecuencia intermedia durante el húmedo. La diversidad fue más alta durante el período de lluvias, confirmando la HPI, por lo menos en este estudio. Peridinium gatunense Nygaard fue dominante en la mayoría de las unidades de muestreo durante el período seco. Durante el período húmedo, Chlamydomonas debaryana Goroschankin y Oocystis lacustris Chodat fueron las especies que más contribuyeron. Considerando los grupos funcionales, los estrategas S dominaron el período seco, a diferencia del período húmedo, cuando la diversidad funcional fue más alta. Concluyendo, los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad del fitoplancton fueron bien explicados por la HPI de Connell.
