To understand the “Zero Emission Building” goal introduced by the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) revision, it is certainly important to define its scope, since different considerations must be made for buildings with different uses, characteristics and locations. In this paper, the case study of a new construction hospital building is analysed, bringing attention to two main aspects: the correct identification of energy needs of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems; Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) design strategies aimed at minimizing CO2 emissions. To pursue these objectives, the hourly trends of energy consumption are examined, focusing on the interpretation of their distribution, the main influencing variables and on the distribution of such energy consumption among the different utilities of the analysed system. It is opinion of the authors that this in-depth study is preparatory to the proper MEP design of the systems: in fact, by knowing the most energyconsuming users and the distribution of heating and cooling loads during the year, it is possible to identify the optimal design strategies and generation technologies to reduce the consumption of Primary Non-Renewable Energy. In this regard, the choice of an ap-propriate calculation model is highlighted as crucial. Possible design strategies related to the case study under consideration are analysed in this paper, ultimately exposing the general considerations regarding the ZEB issue in the hospital setting.

This paper investigates the Italian football clubs adopting a double perspective: the point of view of sustainability and technology innovation. In the last decades, the increasing implementation and spread of digital technologies worldwide in any economic settings, including the sport industry, especially the football business, has been playing a crucial role in supporting managerial, work out and training processes and making them much more competitive and high performing. At the same time, sport organizations, including football clubs, must achieve the UN Agenda 2030 with its 17 SDGs trying to improve their performance in the sustainability perspective. This paper, through a multiple case study of the Italian football clubs in the Serie A for the year 2021/2022, provides a portrait of these sport organizations and their way to be sustainable and much more technologically advanced in one specific county, where football industry has high relevance for volume of affairs and impact on sustainability. Thus, we match the two perspectives especially considering the role and function of digital technologies in making football clubs much more sustainable. After a brief review of the literature on the topic, we investigate the Italian football clubs mapping them considering their degree of sustainability and technology orientation. Our qualitative research provides useful insights about specific technologies able to improve the overall performance of the sport organizations, as well as knowledge about best practices already adopted by organizations for being sustainable, creating a kind of guideline for operators in the football industry.

A new, simple digital holography-based polarization microscope for quantitative birefringence imaging of biological cells is presented. As a proof of concept, two different class of cells have been characterized by polarization sensitive digital holographic imaging (PSDHI). These two cases study reported are: differentiation of leukaemia cells and identification of reacted sperm cells. Although further experimentation is necessary, the suggested approach could represent a prospective label-free diagnostic tool for use in biological and medical research and diagnosis.

Evolution provided, through eras, several animal, vegetal, and protist species with sub-micrometric constituent structures able to manipulate light at the nanoscale in non trivial ways. In particular, diatoms are single-celled microalgae enclosed in a porous silica shell, the frustule, perforated by regular patterns of microand nano-pores and whose functionalities comprise mechanical stability, sorting of nutrients from harmful agents and optimization of sunlight harvesting. Photonic properties of frustules include focusing, photoluminescence, and optical activity, among others. In the present work we show preliminary results concerning the ability of single valves of Arachnoidiscus ehrenbergii diatom frustules to manipulate incoming, circularly polarized radiation in such a way to generate light beams provided with orbital angular momentum (optical vortices). The combination of cross-polarization imaging in different spectral ranges, polarization sensitive digital holographic imaging (PSDHI), and interferometry allowed characterizing the valves and detecting the presence of spin-orbit coupling induced by their ultrastructure.

This paper aims to investigate the Italian football clubs outlining their orientation in adopting digital technologies at any level, primarily for improving their overall performance. In the last decades, we observe the increasing implementation and spread of digital technologies worldwide in any economic settings, including the sport industry, where especially in the football business, the digital technologies have been playing a crucial role in supporting managerial, work out and training processes and making them much more competitive and high performing. This study, through a comparative analysis of the Italian football clubs in the Serie A for the year 2021/2022, aims to provide a portrait of these sport organizations and their way to be much more technologically advanced adopting the digital technologies (accessible website; learning and training applications; match analysis tools, etc.). After a brief review of the literature on the topic, we investigate the Italian football clubs mapping them considering some specific main features (i.e. the degree of innovativeness of website, the adoption of e-training or match analysis solutions, etc.). Our qualitative research, through a multiple case study, should provide some possible stimulating and interesting insights for the future, analysing one specific country, where football industry represents the most relevant sport setting with high relevance in terms of volume of affairs, also significantly affected from the digital technologies making them “smart”.

The simultaneous mapping and the specificity of different chemical species are desirable in several biological and biomedical applications. The stimulated Raman Scattering technique is a proven and well-established label-free method to map the distributions of individual species in a multi-component-based system due to the linear dependence of signals on concentration and its chemical selectivity. In this framework, spectral resolution, i.e., the ability to distinguish closely lying resonances, plays a fundamental role. Here in this work, the cross-correlation of Ti:Sa & OPO femtosecond laser beams in a stimulated Raman scattering microscope is measured. The separation between protein and lipid bands in the C-H region is important for biochemical research and is successfully classified.

In Europe, the second recast of EPBD promotes long-term strategies to accelerate the path to nZEBs, fostering the cost-optimized building design already suggested in the EPBD first recast. Since the nZEB design is a complex optimization problem that is subjected to uncertainty in its boundary conditions (climate, technologies, market, ...), it is necessary to guarantee the resilience of the NZEB optimal design to possible variations of future scenarios, especially as regards the climate change. This work applies the new EdeSSOpt methodology (Energy Demand and Supply Simultaneous Optimization) developed by the Authors aiming at investigating the variation of the cost-optimized multi-family building design in different Italian future climate scenarios, therefore considering parameters related to the building envelope, energy systems and renewable energy sources. The method is implemented into the TRNSYS® (energy model), GenOpt (optimizer) and WeatherShift® (future climate scenario generator) tools. The resulting cost-optimal solutions in future scenarios are related to a lower global cost and a decreased total primary energy consumption. Beyond the future trends of such performance indexes, the fact that most of technical solutions associated with the optimal solutions have not changed with the studied climate scenarios, indicates a certain resilience of the optimal design variables facing climate change.

Over the past two decades, research and clinical resources on clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis have both expanded, with goals to better understanding risk and protective factors on the course of illness and inform early intervention efforts. However, some studies have highlighted potential sampling bias among CHR research studies, raising questions about generalizability of findings and inequitable access to early detection and intervention. The current study sought to explore these questions by comparing 94 participants in a CHR longitudinal monitoring study across North America (NAPLS-2) who converted to syndromal psychosis over the course of the study (CHR-CV) to 171 participants who presented for treatment at a localized first-episode psychosis service (FES) after converting. CHR-CV participants were significantly more likely to be White and have a college-educated parent, while FES participants were more likely to be Black and first- or second-generation immigrants. On average, CHR-CV participants were younger at onset of attenuated positive symptoms, had a longer period of attenuated symptoms prior to conversion, and were more likely to be treated with antipsychotics prior to conversion compared to those in FES programs. After controlling for time since conversion, CHR-CV participants had higher global functioning and were less likely to have experienced recent psychiatric hospitalization. Findings suggest that CHR research and FES clinics may be sampling from different populations, although conclusions are limited by inconsistent sampling frames and methods. Integrated early detection that targets defined geographic catchments may deliver more epidemiologically representative samples to both CHR research and FES.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease presents a social and public health problem affecting millions of Italians. Those affected receive home care from caregivers, subjected to risk of stress. The present investigation focuses on stress, anxiety and depression in caregivers. Methods Data on 200 caregivers and their patients were collected using a specific form to assess cognitive, behavioural, functional patient (MMSE, and ADL-IAD) and caregiver stress (CBI). The relationship between stress, depression and disease has been assessed by means of a linear regression, logistic analysis which reveals the relationship between anxiety, stress and depression and cognitive problems, age, the patient's income. Results The caregivers are usually female (64%), mean age of 56.1 years, daughters (70.5%), pensioners and housewives (30%), who care for the sick at home (79%). Of these, 53% had little time for themselves, 55% observed worsening of health, 56% are tired, 51% are not getting enough sleep. Overall, 55% have problems with the patient's family and/or their own family, 57% at work. Furthermore, 29% feel they are failing to cope with the situation as they wish to move away from home. The increase in the degree of anxiety and depression is directly proportional to the severity of the illness, affecting the patient (r = 0.3 stress and depression r = 0.4 related to CBI score). The memory disorders (OR = 8.4), engine problems (OR = 2.6), perception disorders (OR = 1.9) sick of the patient with Alzheimer's disease are predictive of caregiver stress, depression is associated with the presence of other disorders, mainly behavioural (OR = 5.2), low income (OR = 3.4), patients < 65 years of age (OR = 2.9). Conclusion The quality of life of caregivers is correlated with the severity of behavioural disorders and duration of the Alzheimer's disease. The severity of the disease plays an important role in reorganization of the family environment in families caring for patients not institutionalised. It is important to promote measures to soften the impact that the patient has on the caregiver, and that, at the same time, improves the quality of life of the patient.

Potentially neurotoxic systems involved in traumatic and degenerative diseases of the brain were assessed in acute psychosis. Astrocyte-derived exosomes (ADEs) and neuron-derived exosomes (NDEs) were immunoprecipitated from plasma of ten untreated first-episode psychotics (FPs) and ten matched normal controls (Cs). Neural mitochondrial electron transport and complement proteins were extracted, quantified by ELISAs and normalized with levels of CD81 exosome marker. Levels of subunits 1 and 6 of NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) and subunit 10 of cytochrome b-c1 oxidase (complex III), but not of subunit 1 of cytochrome C oxidase (complex IV) or superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) were significantly lower in ADEs and NDEs of FPs than Cs. This dysregulated pattern of electron transport proteins is associated with increased generation of reactive oxygen species. ADE glial fibrillary acidic protein levels were significantly higher in FPs than Cs, indicating a higher percentage of inflammatory astrocytes in FPs. ADE levels of C3b opsonin were significantly higher and those of C5b-9 attack complex was marginally higher in FPs than Cs. A significantly lower ADE level of the C3 convertase inhibitor CD55 may explain the higher levels of C3 convertase-generated C3b. ADE levels of the neuroprotective protein leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) were significantly lower in FPs than Cs, whereas levels of IL-6 were no different. Plasma neural exosome levels of electron transport and complement proteins may be useful in predicting FP and guiding therapy. SOD mimetics, C3 convertase inhibitors and LIF receptor agonists also may have therapeutic benefits in FP.
