We study the size and structure of globular clusters (GC) systems of 118 early-type galaxies from the NGVS, MATLAS, and ACSVCS surveys. Fitting S\'ersic profiles, we investigate the relationship between effective radii of GC systems ($R_{e, \rm gc}$) and galaxy properties. GC systems are 2--4 times more extended than host galaxies across the entire stellar mass range of our sample ($10^{8.3} < M_* < 10^{11.6}~M_{\odot}$). The relationship between $R_{e, \rm gc}$ and galaxy stellar mass exhibits a characteristic "knee" at a stellar mass of $M_p \simeq 10^{10.8}$, similar to galaxy $R_e$--stellar mass relationship. We present a new characterization of the traditional blue and red GC color sub-populations, describing them with respect to host galaxy $(g'-i')$ color ($\Delta_{gi}$): GCs with similar colors to their hosts have a "red" $\Delta_{gi}$, and those significantly bluer GCs have a "blue" $\Delta_{gi}$. The GC populations with red $\Delta_{gi}$, even in dwarf galaxies, are twice as extended as the stars, suggesting that formation or survival mechanisms favor the outer regions. We find a tight correlation between $R_{e, \rm gc}$ and the total number of GCs, with intrinsic scatter $\lesssim 0.1$ dex spanning two and three orders of magnitude in size and number, respectively. This holds for both red and blue subpopulations, albeit with different slopes. Assuming that $N_{GC, Total}$ correlates with $M_{200}$, we find that the red GC systems have effective radii of roughly 1-5\% $R_{\rm 200}$, while the blue GC systems in massive galaxies can have sizes as large as $\sim$10\% $R_{\rm 200}$. The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and ultraviolet Research (CASTOR) is a proposed Canadian-led 1m-class space telescope that will carry out ultraviolet and blue-optical wide-field imaging, spectroscopy, and photometry. CASTOR will provide an essential bridge in the post-Hubble era, preventing a protracted UV-optical gap in space astronomy and enabling an enormous range of discovery opportunities from the solar system to the nature of the Cosmos, in conjunction with the other great wide-field observatories of the next decade (e.g., Euclid, Roman, Vera Rubin). FORECASTOR (Finding Optics Requirements and Exposure times for CASTOR) will supply a coordinated suite of mission-planning tools that will serve as the one-stop shop for proposal preparation, data reduction, and analysis for the CASTOR mission. We present the first of these tools: a pixel-based, user-friendly, extensible, multi-mission exposure time calculator (ETC) built in Python, including a modern browser-based graphical user interface that updates in real time. We then provide several illustrative examples of FORECASTOR's use that advance the design of planned legacy surveys for the CASTOR mission: a search for the most massive white dwarfs in the Magellanic Clouds; a study of the frequency of flaring activity in M stars, their distribution and impacts on habitability of exoplanets; mapping the proper motions of faint stars in the Milky Way; wide and deep galaxy surveys; and time-domain studies of active galactic nuclei., Comment: Updated references and acknowledgements to match published version. 24 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, published in AJ

RR Lyrae stars are standard candles with characteristic photometric variability and serve as powerful tracers of Galactic structure, substructure, accretion history, and dark matter content. Here we report the discovery of distant RR Lyrae stars, including some of the most distant stars known in the Milky Way halo, with Galactocentric distances of approximately 300 kpc. We use time-series u*g'i'z' Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/MegaCam photometry from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). We employ a template light curve fitting method based on empirical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 RR Lyrae data to identify RR Lyrae candidates in the NGVS data set. We eliminate several hundred suspected quasars and identify 180 RR Lyrae candidates, with heliocentric distances of approximately 20--300 kpc. The halo stellar density distribution is consistent with an r^(-4.09 +/- 0.10) power-law radial profile over most of this distance range with no signs of a break. The distribution of ab-type RR Lyrae in a period-amplitude plot (Bailey diagram) suggests that the mean metallicity of the halo decreases outwards. Compared to other recent RR Lyrae surveys, like Pan-STARRS1 (PS1), the High Cadence Transient Survey (HiTS), and the Dark Energy Survey (DES), our NGVS study has better single-epoch photometric precision and a comparable number of epochs but smaller sky coverage. At large distances, our RR Lyrae sample appears to be relatively pure and complete, with well-measured periods and amplitudes. These newly discovered distant RR Lyrae stars are important additions to the few secure stellar tracers beyond 150 kpc in the Milky Way halo., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

The observed scaling relations between supermassive black hole masses and their host galaxy properties indicate that supermassive black holes influence the evolution of galaxies. However, the scaling relations may be affected by selection biases. We propose to measure black hole masses in a mass-limited galaxy sample including all non-detections to inprove constraints on galaxy mass - black hole mass scaling relations and test for selection bias. We use high spatial resolution spectroscopy from the Keck and Gemini telescopes, and the Jeans Anisotropic Modelling method to measure black hole masses in early type galaxies from the Virgo Cluster. We present four new black hole masses and one upper limit in our mass-selected sample of galaxies of galaxy mass (1.0-3.2) x $10^{10} M_\odot$. This brings the total measured to 11 galaxies out of a full sample of 18 galaxies, allowing us to constrain scaling relations. We calculate a lower limit for the average black hole mass in our sample of 3.7 x $10^{7} M_\odot$. This is at an average galaxy stellar mass of (1.81 +/- 0.14) x $10^{10} M_\odot $ and an average bulge mass of (1.31 +/- 0.15) x $10^{10} M_\odot$. This lower limit shows that black hole masses in early type galaxies are not strongly affected by selection biases.

Systematic studies have revealed hundreds of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the nearby Universe. With half-light radii $r_h$ of approximately 10-100 parsecs and stellar masses $M_*$ $\approx$ $10^6-10^8$ solar masses, UCDs are among the densest known stellar systems. Although similar in appearance to massive globular clusters, the detection of extended stellar envelopes, complex star formation histories, elevated mass-to-light ratio, and supermassive black holes suggest that some UCDs are remnant nuclear star clusters of tidally-stripped dwarf galaxies, or even ancient compact galaxies. However, only a few objects have been found in the transient stage of tidal stripping, and this assumed evolutionary path has never been fully traced by observations. Here we show that 106 galaxies in the Virgo cluster have morphologies that are intermediate between normal, nucleated dwarf galaxies and single-component UCDs, revealing a continuum that fully maps this morphological transition, and fills the `size gap' between star clusters and galaxies. Their spatial distribution and redder color are also consistent with stripped satellite galaxies on their first few pericentric passages around massive galaxies. The `ultra-diffuse' tidal features around several of these galaxies directly show how UCDs are forming through tidal stripping, and that this evolutionary path can include an early phase as a nucleated ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG). These UCDs represent substantial visible fossil remnants of ancient dwarf galaxies in galaxy clusters, and more low-mass remnants probably remain to be found., Comment: Published in Nature. The extragalactic distance scale is fundamental to our understanding of astrophysics and cosmology. In recent years, the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method, applied in the near-IR, has proven especially powerful for measuring galaxy distances, first with HST and now with a new JWST program to calibrate the method directly from the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). So far, however, the distances from space have been gathered slowly, one or two at a time. With the Roman Space Telescope, we have the opportunity to measure uniformly high-quality SBF distances to thousands of galaxies out to hundreds of Mpc. The impact of these data on cosmology and galaxy studies depends on the specifics of the survey, including the filter selection, exposure depth, and (especially) the sky coverage. While the baseline HLWAS survey in four filters plus the grism would yield useful data, the impact would be limited by the relatively small area. A more optimal approach would concentrate on the most efficient passband (F146), adopt an exposure time sufficient to measure good quality distances well out into the Hubble flow, and then maximize the sky coverage within the total time constraints. Grism observations over the same area can provide the needed information on redshifts and spectral energy distributions for compact sources, while colors for larger objects can be obtained from lower resolution surveys. The proposed plan will enable accurate determination of the physical properties of thousands of nearby galaxies, an independent measure of the Hubble constant $H_0$ with negligible statistical error, and competitive constraints on $S_8{\,=\,}\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$. The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

We present Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of the first complete sample of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Virgo cluster. We select all UDGs in Virgo that contain at least 10 globular cluster (GC) candidates and are more than $2.5\sigma$ outliers in scaling relations of size, surface brightness, and luminosity (a total of 10 UDGs). We use the radial velocity of their GC satellites to measure the velocity dispersion of each UDG. We find a mixed bag of galaxies: from one UDG that shows no signs of dark matter, to UDGs that follow the luminosity-dispersion relation of early-type galaxies, to the most extreme examples of heavily dark matter dominated galaxies that break well-known scaling relations such as the luminosity-dispersion or the U-shaped total mass-to-light ratio relations. This is indicative of a number of mechanisms at play forming these peculiar galaxies. Some of them may be the most extended version of dwarf galaxies, while others are so extreme that they seem to populate dark matter halos consistent with that of the Milky-Way or even larger. Even though Milky-Way stars and other GC interlopers contaminating our sample of GCs cannot be fully ruled-out, our assessment of this potential problem and simulations indicate that the probability is low and, if present, unlikely to be enough to explain the extreme dispersions measured. Further confirmation from stellar kinematics studies in these UDGs would be desirable. Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. The ``Spectroscopy and H-band Imaging of Virgo cluster galaxies'' (SHIVir) survey is an optical and near-infrared survey which combines SDSS photometry, deep H-band photometry, and long-slit optical spectroscopy for 190 Virgo cluster galaxies (VCGs) covering all morphological types over the stellar mass range log (M_*/M_Sun) = 7.8-11.5$. We present the spectroscopic sample selection, data reduction, and analysis for this SHIVir sample. We have used and optimised the \texttt{pPXF} routine to extract stellar kinematics from our data. Ultimately, resolved kinematic profiles (rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles) are available for 133 SHIVir galaxies. A comprehensive database of photometric and kinematic parameters for the SHIVir sample is presented with: grizH magnitudes, effective surface brightnesses, effective and isophotal radii, rotational velocities, velocity dispersions, and stellar and dynamical masses. Parameter distributions highlight some bimodal distributions and possible sample biases. A qualitative study of resolved extended velocity dispersion profiles suggests a link between the so-called ``sigma-drop'' kinematic profile and the presence of rings in lenticular S0 galaxies. We present a study of the stellar populations of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo Cluster core with a homogeneous spectroscopic catalog of 692 GCs within a major axis distance $R_{\rm maj} = $ 840 kpc from M87. We investigate radial and azimuthal variations in the mean age, total metallicity, [Fe/H], and $\alpha$-element abundance, of blue (metal-poor) and red (metal-rich) GCs using their co-added spectra. We find that the blue GCs have a steep radial gradient in [Z/H] within $R_{\rm maj} =$ 165 kpc, with roughly equal contributions from [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe], and flat gradients beyond. By contrast, the red GCs show a much shallower gradient in [Z/H], which is entirely driven by [Fe/H]. We use GC-tagged Illustris simulations to demonstrate an accretion scenario where more massive satellites (with more metal- and $\alpha$-rich GCs) sink further into the central galaxy than less massive ones, and where the gradient flattening occurs because of the low GC occupation fraction of low-mass dwarfs disrupted at larger distances. The dense environment around M87 may also cause the steep [$\alpha$/Fe] gradient of the blue GCs, mirroring what is seen in the dwarf galaxy population. The progenitors of red GCs have a narrower mass range than those of blue GCs, which makes their gradients shallower. We also explore spatial inhomogeneity in GC abundances, finding that the red GCs to the northwest of M87 are slightly more metal-rich. We present an analysis of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) population in 75 Virgo cluster late-type galaxies, including all those with a star formation rate >~ 1 M_{sun}/yr and a representative sample of the less star-forming ones. This study is based on 110 observations obtained over 20 years with the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced Camera for Imaging Spectroscopy. As part of a Large Chandra Program, new observations were obtained for 52 of these 75 galaxies. The data are complete to a sensitivity of about 10^{39} erg/s, with a typical detection limit of about 3 x 10^{38} erg/s for the majority of the sources. The catalogue contains about 80 ULXs (0.3-10 keV luminosity >10^{39} erg/s), and provides their location, observed flux, de-absorbed luminosity, and (for the 25 most luminous ones) simple X-ray spectral properties. We discuss the ULX luminosity function in relation to the mass and star formation rate of the sample galaxies. We show that recent models of low-mass plus high-mass X-ray binary populations (scaling with stellar mass and star formation rate, respectively) are mostly consistent with our observational results. We tentatively identify the most luminous X-ray source in the sample (a source in IC 3322A with L_{X} ~ 6 x 10^{40} erg/s) as a recent supernova or its young remnant. Combining data from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS) and the Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey (NGVS), we extend previous studies of color gradients of the globular cluster (GC) systems of the two most massive galaxies in the Virgo cluster, M87 and M49, to radii of $\sim 15~R_e$ ($\sim 200$ kpc for M87 and $\sim 250$ kpc for M49). We find significant negative color gradients, i.e., becoming bluer with increasing distance, out to these large radii. The gradients are driven mainly by the outwards decrease of the ratio of red to blue GC numbers. The color gradients are also detected out to $\sim 15~R_e$ in the red and blue sub-populations of GCs taken separately. In addition, we find a negative color gradient when we consider the satellite low-mass elliptical galaxies as a system, i.e., the satellite galaxies closer to the center of the host galaxy usually have redder color indices, both for their stars and GCs. According to the "two phase" formation scenario of massive early-type galaxies, the host galaxy accretes stars and GCs from low-mass satellite galaxies in the second phase. So the accreted GC system naturally inherits the negative color gradient present in the satellite population. This can explain why the color gradient of the GC system can still be observed at large radii after multiple minor mergers., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging to derive a distance to the Virgo Cluster ultradiffuse galaxy (UDG) VCC 615 using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance estimator. We detect 5,023 stars within the galaxy, down to a 50% completeness limit of F814W = 28.0, using counts in the surrounding field to correct for contamination due to background sources and Virgo intracluster stars. We derive an extinction-corrected F814W tip magnitude of $m_{\rm tip,0} = 27.19^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, yielding a distance of $d=17.7^{+0.6}_{-0.4}$ Mpc. This places VCC 615 on the far side of the Virgo Cluster ($d_{\rm Virgo} = 16.5 Mpc$), at a Virgocentric distance of 1.3 Mpc and near the virial radius of the main body of Virgo. Coupling this distance with the galaxy's observed radial velocity, we find that VCC 615 is on an outbound trajectory, having survived a recent passage through the inner parts of the cluster. Indeed, our orbit modeling gives a 50% chance the galaxy passed inside the Virgo core (r<620 kpc) within the past Gyr, although very close passages directly through the cluster center (r<200 kpc) are unlikely. Given VCC 615's undisturbed morphology, we argue that the galaxy has experienced no recent and sudden transformation into a UDG due to the cluster potential, but rather is a long-lived UDG whose relatively wide orbit and large dynamical mass protect it from stripping and destruction by Virgo cluster tides. Finally, we also describe the serendipitous discovery of a nearby Virgo dwarf galaxy projected 90 arcseconds (7.2 kpc) away from VCC 615., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to test if ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) can form by tidal stripping by predicting the ages and metallicities of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to compiled observations of age and metallicities of observed UCDs. We further calculate the colours of our sample of simulated stripped nuclei using SSP models and compare these colours to observations of UCDs in the Virgo cluster. We find that the ages of observed UCDs are consistent with simulated stripped nuclei, with both groups of objects having a mean age > 9 Gyr. Both stripped nuclei and UCDs follow a similar mass-metallicity relationship, and the metallicities of observed UCDs are consistent with those of simulated stripped nuclei for objects with M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$. The colours of observed UCDs are also consistent with our simulated stripped nuclei, for objects with M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$, with more massive objects being redder. We find that the colours of stripped nuclei exhibit a bimodal red and blue distribution that can be explained by the dependency of colour on age and metallicity, and by the mass-colour relation. We additionally find that our low mass stripped nuclei sample is consistent with the colour of blue globular clusters. We conclude that the internal properties of simulated nuclei support the tidal stripping model of UCD formation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to predict the numbers, masses and radial distributions of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to observations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the Virgo cluster. We trace the merger trees of galaxies in massive galaxy clusters back in time and determine the numbers and masses of stripped nuclei from galaxies disrupted in mergers. The spatial distribution of stripped nuclei in the simulations is consistent with those of UCDs surrounding massive galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Additionally, the numbers of stripped nuclei are consistent with the numbers of M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs around individual galaxies and in the Virgo cluster as a whole. The mass distributions in this mass range are also consistent. We find that the numbers of stripped nuclei surrounding individual galaxies correlates better with the stellar or halo mass of individual galaxies than the total cluster mass. We conclude that most high mass (M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs are likely stripped nuclei. It is difficult to draw reliable conclusions about low mass (M < $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs because of observational selection effects. We additionally predict that a few hundred stripped nuclei below a mass of $2~\times~10^{6}~M_{\odot}$ should exist in massive galaxies that will overlap in mass with the globular cluster population. We present the first results from the ongoing, intensive, multi-wavelength monitoring program of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817. While this AGN was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission line variability. The correlation recovers in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 enters a less obscured state. We present the first results of an MMT/Hectospec campaign to measure the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) around M49 -- the brightest galaxy in the Virgo galaxy cluster, which dominates the Virgo B subcluster. The data include kinematic tracers beyond 95 kpc (~5.2 effective radii) for M49 for the first time, enabling us to achieve three key insights reported here. First, beyond ~20'-30' (~100-150 kpc), the GC kinematics sampled along the minor photometric axis of M49 become increasingly hotter, indicating a transition from GCs related to M49 to those representing the Virgo B intra-cluster medium. Second, there is an anomaly in the line-of-sight radial velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{r,los}$) profile in an annulus ~10-15' (~50-90 kpc) from M49 in which the kinematics cool by $\Delta \sigma_{r,los}~150$ km s$^{-1}$ relative to those in- or outward. The kinematic fingerprint of a previous accretion event is hinted at in projected phase-space, and we isolate GCs that both give rise to this feature, and are spatially co-located with two prominent stellar shells in the halo of M49. Third, we find a subsample of GCs with velocities representative of the dwarf galaxy VCC1249 that is currently interacting with M49. The spatial distribution of these GCs closely resembles the morphology of VCC1249's isophotes, indicating that several of these GCs are likely in the act of being stripped from the dwarf during its passage through M49's halo. We derive a distance of $D = 16.6 \pm 0.3$~Mpc ($\mu=31.10\pm0.04$~mag) to the archetypal narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 based on Cepheid Period--Luminosity relations and new Hubble Space Telescope multiband imaging. We identify 419 Cepheid candidates and estimate the distance at both optical and near-infrared wavelengths using subsamples of precisely-photometered variables (123 and 47 in the optical and near-infrared subsamples, respectively). We compare our independent photometric procedures and distance-estimation methods to those used by the SH0ES team and find agreement to 0.01~mag. The distance we obtain suggests an Eddington ratio $\dot{m} \approx 0.2$ for NGC 4051, typical of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, unlike the seemingly-odd value implied by previous distance estimates. We derive a peculiar velocity of $-490\pm34$~km~s$^{-1}$ for NGC 4051, consistent with the overall motion of the Ursa Major Cluster in which it resides. Cosmological simulations predict that galaxies are embedded into triaxial dark matter haloes, which appear approximately elliptical in projection. Weak gravitational lensing allows us to constrain these halo shapes and thereby test the nature of dark matter. Weak lensing has already provided robust detections of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scales of groups and clusters, whereas results for galaxies have been somewhat inconclusive. Here we combine data from five surveys (NGVSLenS, KiDS/KV450, CFHTLenS, CS82, and RCSLenS) in order to tighten observational constraints on galaxy-scale halo ellipticity for photometrically selected lens samples. We constrain $f_\rm{h}$, the average ratio between the aligned component of the halo ellipticity and the ellipticity of the light distribution, finding $f_\rm{h}=0.303^{+0.080}_{-0.079}$ for red lenses and $f_\rm{h}=0.217^{+0.160}_{-0.159}$ for blue lenses when assuming elliptical NFW density profiles and a linear scaling between halo ellipticity and galaxy ellipticity. Our constraints for red galaxies constitute the currently most significant ($3.8\sigma$) systematics-corrected detection of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scale of galaxies. Our results are in good agreement with expectations from the Millennium Simulation that apply the same analysis scheme and incorporate models for galaxy-halo misalignment. Assuming these misalignment models and the analysis assumptions stated above are correct, our measurements imply an average dark matter halo ellipticity for the studied red galaxy samples of $\langle|\epsilon_\rm{h}|\rangle=0.174\pm 0.046$, where $|\epsilon_{h}|=(1-q)/(1+q)$ relates to the ratio $q=b/a$ of the minor and major axes of the projected mass distribution. We present an analysis of the structure, kinematics and orbit of a newly found stellar stream emanating from the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). This stream was discovered in an improved matched-filter map of the outer Galaxy, based on a "color-color-magnitude" diagram, created using photometry from the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) and the Pan-STARRS 1 3$\pi$ survey (PS1). We find the stream to have a length of 17{\deg} (2.5 kpc at the distance of M92), a width dispersion of $0.29${\deg}(42 pc) and a stellar mass of $[3.17 \pm{0.89}] \times 10^{4} $ M$_\odot$ ($10 \%$ of the stellar mass of the current main body of M92). We examine the kinematics of main sequence, red giant and blue horizontal branch stars belonging to the stream and that have proper motion measurements from the second data release of Gaia. N-body simulations suggest that the stream was likely formed very recently (during the last $\sim 500$ Myr) forcing us to question the orbital origin of this ancient, metal-poor globular cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. A clear link between a dwarf-dwarf merger event and enhanced star formation (SF) in the recent past was recently identified in the gas-dominated merger remnant VCC 848, offering by far the clearest view of a gas-rich late-stage dwarf-dwarf merger. We present a joint analysis of JVLA HI emission-line mapping, optical imaging and numerical simulations of VCC 848, in order to examine the impact of the merger on the stellar and gaseous distributions. VCC 848 has less than 30% of its HI gas concentrated within the central high-surface-brightness star-forming region, while the remaining HI is entrained in outlying tidal features. Particularly, a well-defined tidal arm reaches N(HI) comparable to the galaxy center but lacks SF. The molecular gas mass inferred from the current SF rate (SFR) dominates over the atomic gas mass in the central ~ 1.5 kpc. VCC 848 is consistent with being a main-sequence star-forming galaxy for its current stellar mass and SFR. The HII region luminosity distribution largely agrees with that of normal dwarf irregulars with similar luminosities, except that the brightest HII region is extraordinarily luminous. Our N-body/hydrodynamical simulations imply that VCC 848 is a merger between a gas-dominated primary progenitor and a gas-bearing star-dominated secondary. The progenitors had their first passage on a near-radial non-coplanar orbit more than 1 Gyr ago. The merger did not build up a core as compact as typical compact dwarfs with centralized starburst, which may be partly ascribed to the star-dominated nature of the secondary, and in a general sense, a negative stellar feedback following intense starbursts triggered at early stages of the merger., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present a study of ultra compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo cluster based mainly on imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). Using $\sim$100 deg$^{2}$ of $u^*giz$ imaging, we have identified more than 600 candidate UCDs, from the core of Virgo out to its virial radius. Candidates have been selected through a combination of magnitudes, ellipticities, colors, surface brightnesses, half-light radii and, when available, radial velocities. Candidates were also visually validated from deep NGVS images. Subsamples of varying completeness and purity have been defined to explore the properties of UCDs and compare to those of globular clusters and the nuclei of dwarf galaxies with the aim of delineating the nature and origins of UCDs. From a surface density map, we find the UCDs to be mostly concentrated within Virgo's main subclusters, around its brightest galaxies. We identify several subsamples of UCDs -- i.e., the brightest, largest, and those with the most pronounced and/or asymmetric envelopes -- that could hold clues to the origin of UCDs and possible evolutionary links with dwarf nuclei. We find some evidence for such a connection from the existence of diffuse envelopes around some UCDs, and comparisons of radial distributions of UCDs and nucleated galaxies within the cluster., Comment: 70 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present a study of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Virgo Cluster based on deep imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). Applying a new definition for the UDG class based on galaxy scaling relations, we define samples of 44 and 26 UDGs using expansive and restrictive selection criteria, respectively. Our UDG sample includes objects that are significantly fainter than previously known UDGs: i.e., more than half are fainter than $\langle\mu\rangle_e \sim27.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The UDGs in Virgo's core region show some evidence for being structurally distinct from "normal" dwarf galaxies, but this separation disappears when considering the full sample of galaxies throughout the cluster. UDGs are more centrally concentrated in their spatial distribution than other Virgo galaxies of similar luminosity, while their morphologies demonstrate that at least some UDGs owe their diffuse nature to physical processes---such as tidal interactions or low-mass mergers---that are at play within the cluster environment. The globular cluster (GC) systems of Virgo UDGs have a wide range in specific frequency ($S_N$), with a higher mean $S_N$ than "normal" Virgo dwarfs, but a lower mean $S_N$ than Coma UDGs at fixed luminosity. Their GCs are predominantly blue, with a small contribution from red clusters in the more massive UDGs. The combined GC luminosity function is consistent with those observed in dwarf galaxies, showing no evidence of being anomalously luminous. The diversity in their morphologies and their GC properties suggests no single process has given rise to all objects within the UDG class. We derive a distance of $15.8\pm0.4$ Mpc to the archetypical Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 based on the near-infrared Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation and new Hubble Space Telescope multiband imaging. This distance determination, based on measurements of 35 long-period ($P > 25$d) Cepheids, will support the absolute calibration of the supermassive black hole mass in this system, as well as studies of the dynamics of the feedback or feeding of its active galactic nucleus., Comment: 18 pages. 11 figures. 7 tables. We study the mass distribution and kinematics of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 (NGC 4486) using discrete chemo-dynamical, axisymmetric Jeans equation modelling. Our catalogue comprises 894 globular clusters (GCs) extending to a projected radius of $\sim 430$ kpc with line-of-sight velocities and colours, and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field unit data within the central $2.4$ kpc of the main galaxy. The gravitational potential for our models is a combination of a luminous matter potential with a varying mass-to-light ratio for the main galaxy, a supermassive black hole and a dark matter (DM) potential with a cusped or cored DM halo. The best-fitting models with either a cusped or a cored DM halo show no significant differences and both are acceptable. We obtain a total mass of $(2.16 \pm 0.38) \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}$ within $\sim$ 400 kpc. By including the stellar mass-to-light ratio gradient, the DM fraction increases from $\sim$ 26 percent (with no gradient) to $\sim$ 73 percent within $1\,R_e^{\rm maj}$ (major axis of half-light isophote, 14.2 kpc), and from $\sim$ 84 percent to $\sim$ 94 percent within $5\,R_e^{\rm maj}$ (71.2 kpc). Red GCs have moderate rotation with $V_{\rm max}/\sigma \sim$ 0.4, and blue GCs have weak rotation with $V_{\rm max}/\sigma \sim$ 0.1. Red GCs have tangential velocity dispersion anisotropy, while blue GCs are consistent with being nearly isotropic. Our results suggest that red GCs are more likely to be born in-situ, while blue GCs are more likely to be accreted.

It has long been speculated that many starburst or compact dwarf galaxies are resulted from dwarf-dwarf galaxy merging, but unequivocal evidence for this possibility has rarely been reported in the literature. We present the first study of deep optical broadband images of a gas-dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) VCC848 (Mstar=2e8Msun) which hosts extended stellar shells and thus is confirmed to be a dwarf-dwarf merger. VCC848 is located in the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. By analyzing the stellar light distribution, we found that VCC848 is the result of a merging between two dwarf galaxies with a primary-to-secondary mass ratio < ~ 5 for the stellar components and < ~ 2 for the presumed dark matter halos. The secondary progenitor galaxy has been almost entirely disrupted. The age-mass distribution of photometrically selected star cluster candidates in VCC848 implies that the cluster formation rate (CFR, proportional to star formation rate) was enhanced by a factor of ~ 7 - 10 during the past 1 Gyr. The merging-induced enhancement of CFR peaked near the galactic center a few hundred Myr ago and has started declining in the last few tens of Myr. The current star formation activities, as traced by the youngest clusters, mainly occur at large galactocentric distances (> ~ 1 kpc). The fact that VCC848 is still (atomic) gas-dominated after the period of most violent collision suggests that gas-rich dwarf galaxy merging can result in BCD-like remnants with extended atomic gas distribution surrounding a blue compact center, in general agreement with previous numerical simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJL

SKA1 will make transformational advances in our understanding of the Universe across a wide range of fields, and Canadians are poised to play leadership roles in several. We present a new fully data-driven algorithm that uses photometric data from the Canada-France-Imaging-Survey (CFIS; $u$), Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1; $griz$), and Gaia ($G$) to discriminate between dwarf and giant stars and to estimate their distances and metallicities. The algorithm is trained and tested using the SDSS/SEGUE spectroscopic dataset and Gaia photometric/astrometric dataset. At [Fe/H]$<-1.2$, the algorithm succeeds in identifying more than 70% of the giants in the training/test set, with a dwarf contamination fraction below 30% (with respect to the SDSS/SEGUE dataset). The photometric metallicity estimates have uncertainties better than 0.2 dex when compared with the spectroscopic measurements. The distances estimated by the algorithm are valid out to a distance of at least $\sim 80$ kpc without requiring any prior on the stellar distribution, and have fully independent uncertainities that take into account both random and systematic errors. These advances allow us to estimate these stellar parameters for approximately 12 million stars in the photometric dataset. This will enable studies involving the chemical mapping of the distant outer disc and the stellar halo, including their kinematics using the Gaia proper motions. This type of algorithm can be applied in the Southern hemisphere to the first release of LSST data, thus providing an almost complete view of the external components of our Galaxy out to at least $\sim 80$ kpc. Critical to the success of these efforts will be ensuring well-defined spectroscopic training sets that sample a broad range of stellar parameters with minimal biases. We present a Cepheid-based distance to the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC\,6814 from {\it Hubble Space Telescope} observations. We obtained F555W and F814W imaging over the course of 12 visits with logarithmic time spacing in 2013 August$-$October. We detected and made photometric measurements for 16,469 unique sources across all images in both filters, from which we identify 90 excellent Cepheid candidates spanning a range of periods of $13-84$ days. We find evidence for incompleteness in the detection of candidates at periods <21 days. Based on the analysis of Cepheid candidates above the incompleteness limit, we determine a distance modulus for NGC\,6814 relative to the LMC of $\mu_{\rm rel\,LMC}=13.200^{+0.031}_{-0.031}$ mag. Adopting the recent constraint of the distance modulus to the LMC determined by Pietrzynski et al., we find $m-M=31.677^{+0.041}_{-0.041}$ which gives a distance of $21.65 \pm 0.41$ Mpc to NGC 6814., Comment: 10 pages, 3 tables and 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The occurrence of planetary nebulae (PNe) in globular clusters (GCs) provides an excellent chance to study low-mass stellar evolution in a special (low-metallicity, high stellar density) environment. We report a systematic spectroscopic survey for the [O{\sc iii}] 5007 emission line of PNe in 1469 Virgo GCs and 121 Virgo ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs), mainly hosted in the giant elliptical galaxies M87, M49, M86, and M84. We detected zero PNe in our UCD sample and discovered one PN ($M_{5007} = -4.1$ mag) associated with an M87 GC. We used the [O{\sc iii}] detection limit for each GC to estimate the luminosity-specific frequency of PNe, $\alpha$, and measured $\alpha$ in the Virgo cluster GCs to be $\alpha \sim 3.9_{-0.7}^{+5.2}\times 10^{-8}\mathrm{PN}/L_\odot$. $\alpha$ in Virgo GCs is among the lowest values reported in any environment, due in part to the large sample size, and is 5--6 times lower than that for the Galactic GCs. We suggest that $\alpha$ decreases towards brighter and more massive clusters, sharing a similar trend as the binary fraction, and the discrepancy between the Virgo and Galactic GCs can be explained by the observational bias in extragalactic surveys toward brighter GCs. This low but non-zero efficiency in forming PNe may highlight the important role played by binary interactions in forming PNe in GCs. We argue that a future survey of less massive Virgo GCs will be able to determine whether PN production in Virgo GCs is governed by internal process (mass, density, binary fraction), or is largely regulated by external environment., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. Using the photometric data from the Next Generation Fornax Survey, we find a significant radial alignment signal among the Fornax dwarf galaxies. The globular cluster (GC) specific frequency ($S_N$), defined as the number of GCs per unit galactic luminosity, represents the efficiency of GC formation (and survival) compared to field stars. Despite the naive expectation that star cluster formation should scale directly with star formation, this efficiency varies widely across galaxies. To explore this variation we measure the z-band GC specific frequency ($S_{N,z}$) for 43 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Fornax Cluster Survey. Combined with the homogenous measurements of $S_{N,z}$ in 100 ETGs from the HST/ACS Virgo Cluster Survey from Peng et al. (2008), we investigate the dependence of $S_{N,z}$ on mass and environment over a range of galaxy properties. We find that $S_{N,z}$ behaves similarly in the two galaxy clusters, despite the clusters' order-of-magnitude difference in mass density. The $S_{N,z}$ is low in intermediate-mass ETGs ($-20

Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. The ubiquitous variability of quasars across a wide range of wavelengths and timescales encodes critical information about the structure and dynamics of the circumnuclear emitting regions that are too small to be directly resolved, as well as detailed underlying physics of accretion and feedback processes in these active supermassive black holes. We emphasize the importance of studying quasar variability with time-domain spectroscopy, focusing on two science cases: (1) reverberation mapping (RM) to measure the broad-line region sizes and black hole masses in distant quasars; (2) spectroscopic follow-up of extreme variability quasars that dramatically change their continuum and broad-line flux within several years. We highlight the need for dedicated optical-infrared spectroscopic survey facilities in the coming decades to accompany wide-area time-domain imaging surveys, including: (1) the next phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V; ~2020-2025), an all-sky, time-domain multi-object spectroscopic survey with 2.5m-class telescopes; (2) the planned Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer, a dedicated 10m-class spectroscopic survey telescope with a 1.5 sq. deg field-of-view and multiplex of thousands of fibers in both optical and near-IR (J+H) to begin operations in 2029; (3) the Time-domain Spectroscopic Observatory (TSO), a proposed Probe-class ~1.3m telescope at L2, with imaging and spectroscopy (R=200, 1800) in 4 bands (0.3 - 5 micron) and rapid slew capability to 90% of sky, which will extend the coverage of Hbeta to z=8., Comment: Science White Paper for the US Astro 2020 Decadal Survey

We characterize the incidence and intensity of low-level super-massive black hole activity within the Fornax cluster, through X-ray observations of the nuclei of 29 quiescent early-type galaxies. Using the \textit{Chandra X-ray Telescope}, we target 17 galaxies from the HST Fornax Cluster Survey, down to a uniform (3$\sigma$) limiting X-ray luminosity threshold of $5\cdot10^{38}$ergs$^{-1}$, which we combine with deeper, archival observations for an additional 12 galaxies. A nuclear X-ray point-source is detected in 11 out of 29 targets. After accounting for the low mass X-ray binary contamination to the nuclear X-ray signal, the X-ray active fraction is measured at $26.6\% \pm 9.6\%$. The results from this analysis are compared to similar investigations targeting quiescent early types in the Virgo cluster, as well as the field. After correcting for the different mass distributions, the measured Fornax active fraction is less than the field fraction, at more than 3$\sigma$, confirming that the funneling of gas to the nuclear regions of cluster members is inhibited compared to those galaxies in the field. At the same time, we find no statistically significant difference between Fornax and Virgo galaxies, with only marginal evidence for a lower active fraction in Fornax (1 $\sigma$); if real, owing to Fornax's higher galaxy number density, this could indicate that galaxy-galaxy interactions are more effective at gas removal than galaxy-gas effects., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Intra-cluster (IC) populations are expected to be a natural result of the hierarchical assembly of clusters, yet their low space densities make them difficult to detect and study. We present the first definitive kinematic detection of an IC population of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo cluster, around the central galaxy, M87. This study focuses on the Virgo core for which the combination of NGVS photometry and follow-up spectroscopy allows us to reject foreground star contamination and explore GC kinematics over the full Virgo dynamical range. The GC kinematics changes gradually with galactocentric distance, decreasing in mean velocity and increasing in velocity dispersion, eventually becoming indistinguishable from the kinematics of Virgo dwarf galaxies at $\mathrm{R>320\, kpc}$. By kinematically tagging M87 halo and intra-cluster GCs we find that 1) the M87 halo has a smaller fraction ($52\pm3\%$) of blue clusters with respect to the IC counterpart ($77\pm10\%$), 2) the $(g'-r')_{0}$ vs $(i'-z')_{0}$ color-color diagrams reveal a galaxy population that is redder than the IC population that may be due to a different composition in chemical abundance and progenitor mass, and 3) the ICGC distribution is shallower and more extended than the M87 GCs, yet still centrally concentrated. The ICGC specific frequency, $S_{N,\mathrm{ICL}}=10.2\pm4.8$, is consistent with what is observed for the population of quenched, low-mass galaxies within 1~Mpc from the cluster's center. The IC population at Virgo's center is thus consistent with being an accreted component from low-mass galaxies tidally stripped or disrupted through interactions, with a total mass of $\mathrm{M_{ICL,tot}=10.8\pm0.1\times10^{11}M_{\odot}}$., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of globular clusters (GCs) around the ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) VLSB-B, VLSB-D, and VCC615 located in the central regions of the Virgo cluster. We spectroscopically identify 4, 12, and 7 GC satellites of these UDGs, respectively. We find that the three UDGs have systemic velocities ($V_{sys}$) consistent with being in the Virgo cluster, and that they span a wide range of velocity dispersions, from $\sim 16$ to $\sim 47$ km/s, and high dynamical mass-to-light ratios within the radius that contains half the number of GCs ($ 407^{+916}_{-407}$, $21^{+15}_{-11}$, $60^{+65}_{-38}$, respectively). VLSB-D shows possible evidence for rotation along the stellar major axis and its $V_{sys}$ is consistent with that of the massive galaxy M84 and the center of the Virgo cluster itself. These findings, in addition to having a dynamically and spatially ($\sim 1$ kpc) off-centered nucleus and being extremely elongated, suggest that VLSB-D could be tidally perturbed. On the contrary, VLSB-B and VCC615 show no signals of tidal deformation. Whereas the dynamics of VLSB-D suggest that it has a less massive dark matter halo than expected for its stellar mass, VLSB-B and VCC615 are consistent with a $\sim 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$ dark matter halo. Although our samples of galaxies and GCs are small, these results suggest that UDGs may be a diverse population, with their low surface brightnesses being the result of very early formation, tidal disruption, or a combination of the two., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We derive stellar population parameters for a representative sample of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) and a large sample of massive globular clusters (GCs) with stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ in the central galaxy M87 of the Virgo galaxy cluster, based on model fitting to the Lick-index measurements from both the literature and new observations. After necessary spectral stacking of the relatively faint objects in our initial sample of 40 UCDs and 118 GCs, we obtain 30 sets of Lick-index measurements for UCDs and 80 for GCs. The M87 UCDs have ages $\gtrsim$ 8 Gyr and [$\alpha$/Fe] $\simeq$ 0.4 dex, in agreement with previous studies based on smaller samples. The literature UCDs, located in lower-density environments than M87, extend to younger ages and smaller [$\alpha$/Fe] (at given metallicities) than M87 UCDs, resembling the environmental dependence of the Virgo dE nuclei. The UCDs exhibit a positive mass-metallicity relation (MZR), which flattens and connects compact ellipticals at stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. The Virgo dE nuclei largely follow the average MZR of UCDs, whereas most of the M87 GCs are offset towards higher metallicities for given stellar masses. The difference between the mass-metallicity distributions of UCDs and GCs may be qualitatively understood as a result of their different physical sizes at birth in a self-enrichment scenario or of galactic nuclear cluster star formation efficiency being relatively low in a tidal stripping scenario for UCD formation. Substructure in globular cluster (GC) populations around large galaxies is expected in galaxy formation scenarios that involve accretion or merger events, and it has been searched for using direct associations between GCs and structure in the diffuse galaxy light, or with GC kinematics. Here, we present a search for candidate substructures in the GC population around the Virgo cD galaxy M87 through the analysis of the spatial distribution of the GC colors.~The study is based on a sample of $\sim\!1800$ bright GCs with high-quality $u,g,r,i,z,K_s$ photometry, selected to ensure a low contamination by foreground stars or background galaxies.~The spectral energy distributions of the GCs are associated with formal estimates of age and metallicity, which are representative of its position in a 4-D color-space relative to standard single stellar population models.~Dividing the sample into broad bins based on the relative formal ages, we observe inhomogeneities which reveal signatures of GC substructures.~The most significant of these is a spatial overdensity of GCs with relatively young age labels, of diameter $\sim\!0.1$\,deg ($\sim\!30\,$kpc), located to the south of M87.~The significance of this detection is larger than about 5$\sigma$ after accounting for estimates of random and systematic errors.~Surprisingly, no large Virgo galaxy is present in this area, that could potentially host these GCs.~But candidate substructures in the M87 halo with equally elusive hosts have been described based on kinematic studies in the past.~The number of GC spectra available around M87 is currently insufficient to clarify the nature of the new candidate substructure., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Hubble multi-wavelength photometric catalogs, including (up to) 17 filters with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 from the ultra-violet to near-infrared for the Hubble Frontier Fields and associated parallels. We have constructed homogeneous photometric catalogs for all six clusters and their parallels. To further expand these data catalogs, we have added ultra-deep $K_{S}$-band imaging at 2.2~\micron\ from the Very Large Telescope HAWK-I and Keck-I MOSFIRE instruments. We also add post-cryogenic \spitzer\ imaging at 3.6~\micron\ and 4.5~\micron\ with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), as well as archival IRAC 5.8~\micron\ and 8.0~\micron\ imaging when available. We introduce the public release of the multi-wavelength (0.2--8~\micron) photometric catalogs, and we describe the unique steps applied for the construction of these catalogs. Particular emphasis is given to the source detection band, the contamination of light from the bright cluster galaxies and intra-cluster light. In addition to the photometric catalogs, we provide catalogs of photometric redshifts and stellar population properties. Furthermore, this includes all the images used in the construction of the catalogs, including the combined models of bright cluster galaxies and intra-cluster light, the residual images, segmentation maps and more. These catalogs are a robust data set of the Hubble Frontier Fields and will be an important aide in designing future surveys, as well as planning follow-up programs with current and future observatories to answer key questions remaining about first light, reionization, the assembly of galaxies and many more topics, most notably, by identifying high-redshift sources to target., Comment: Fixed web address given here in the comments to the HFF-DeepSpace release website. We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the core region ($< r_{\rm vir}/4$) of the Fornax galaxy cluster based on deep $u'g'i'$ photometry from the Next Generation Fornax Cluster Survey. All imaging data were obtained with the Dark Energy Camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro-Tololo Interamerican Observatory. We identify 258 dwarf galaxy candidates with luminosities $-17 < M_{g'} < -8$ mag, corresponding to typical stellar masses of $9.5\gtrsim \log{\cal M}_{\star}/M_\odot \gtrsim 5.5$, reaching $\sim\!3$ mag deeper in point-source luminosity and $\sim\!4$ mag deeper in surface-brightness sensitivity compared to the classic Fornax Cluster Catalog. Morphological analysis shows that surface-brightness profiles are well represented by single-component S\'ersic models with average S\'ersic indices of $\langle n\rangle_{u',g',i'}=(0.78-0.83) \pm 0.02$, and average effective radii of $\langle r_e\rangle_{u',g',i'}\!=(0.67-0.70) \pm 0.02$ kpc. Color-magnitude relations indicate a flattening of the galaxy red sequence at faint galaxy luminosities, similar to the one recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. A comparison with population synthesis models and the galaxy mass-metallicity relation reveals that the average faint dwarf galaxy is likely older than ~5 Gyr. We study galaxy scaling relations between stellar mass, effective radius, and stellar mass surface density over a stellar mass range covering six orders of magnitude. We find that over the sampled stellar mass range several distinct mechanisms of galaxy mass assembly can be identified: i) dwarf galaxies assemble mass inside the half-mass radius up to $\log{\cal M}_{\star}$ ~8.0, ii) isometric mass assembly in the range $8.0 < \log{\cal M}_{\star}/M_\odot < 10.5$, and iii) massive galaxies assemble stellar mass predominantly in their halos at $\log{\cal M}_{\star}$ ~10.5 and above., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of 39 nuclei and their early-type hosts in the Virgo Cluster using ten broadband filters: F300W, F475W, F850LP, F160W, $u^*griz$, and $K_s$. We describe the Virgo Redux program, which provides high-resolution UV and NIR imaging. Combining this data with optical and NIR imaging from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey and the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, we estimate masses, metallicities and ages using simple stellar population (SSP) models. For 19 nuclei, we compare to SSP parameters derived from Keck and Gemini spectra and find reasonable agreement between the photometric and spectroscopic metallicity: the RMS scatter is 0.3 dex. We reproduce the nucleus-galaxy mass fraction of $0.33^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$ percent for galaxy stellar masses $10^{8.4}-10^{10.3} M_\odot$ with a typical precision of $\sim$35% for the nuclei masses. Based on available model predictions, there is no single preferred formation scenario for nuclei, suggesting that nuclei are formed stochastically through a mix of processes. Nuclei metallicities are statistically identical to those of their hosts, appearing $0.07 \pm 0.3$ dex more metal-rich on average -- although, omitting galaxies with unusual origins, nuclei are $0.20\pm0.28$ dex more metal-rich. Nuclei appear to be $0.56 \pm 0.12$ dex more metal rich than ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) at fixed mass. We find no clear age difference between nuclei and their galaxies, with nuclei displaying a broad range of ages. Interestingly, we find that the most massive nuclei may be flatter and more closely aligned with the semi-major axes of their hosts, suggesting that they formed through predominantly dissipative processes., Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, 9 tables. We use three different techniques to identify hundreds of white dwarf (WD) candidates in the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) based on photometry from the NGVS and GUViCS, and proper motions derived from the NGVS and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Photometric distances for these candidates are calculated using theoretical color-absolute magnitude relations while effective temperatures are measured by fitting their spectral energy distributions. Disk and halo WD candidates are separated using a tangential velocity cut of 200 km~s$^{-1}$ in a reduced proper motion diagram, which leads to a sample of six halo WD candidates. Cooling ages, calculated for an assumed WD mass of 0.6$M_{\odot}$, range between 60 Myr and 6 Gyr, although these estimates depend sensitively on the adopted mass. Luminosity functions for the disk and halo subsamples are constructed and compared to previous results from the SDSS and SuperCOSMOS survey. We compute a number density of (2.81 $\pm$ 0.52) $\times 10^{-3}$~pc$^{-3}$ for the disk WD population--- consistent with previous measurements. We find (7.85 $\pm$ 4.55) $\times 10^{-6}$~pc$^{-3}$ for the halo, or 0.3\% of the disk. Observed stellar counts are also compared to predictions made by the TRILEGAL and Besan\c{c}on stellar population synthesis models. The comparison suggests that the TRILEGAL model overpredicts the total number of WDs. The WD counts predicted by the Besan\c{c}on model agree with the observations, although a discrepancy arises when comparing the predicted and observed halo WD populations; the difference is likely due to the WD masses in the adopted model halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 17 pages, 17 figures

Large samples of globular clusters (GC) with precise multi-wavelength photometry are becoming increasingly available and can be used to constrain the formation history of galaxies. We present the results of an analysis of Milky Way (MW) and Virgo core GCs based on five optical-near-infrared colors and ten synthetic stellar population models. For the MW GCs, the models tend to agree on photometric ages and metallicities, with values similar to those obtained with previous studies. When used with Virgo core GCs, for which photometry is provided by the Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey (NGVS), the same models generically return younger ages. This is a consequence of the systematic differences observed between the locus occupied by Virgo core GCs and models in panchromatic color space. Only extreme fine-tuning of the adjustable parameters available to us can make the majority of the best-fit ages old. Although we cannot exclude that the formation history of the Virgo core may lead to more conspicuous populations of relatively young GCs than in other environments, we emphasize that the intrinsic properties of the Virgo GCs are likely to differ systematically from those assumed in the models. Thus, the large wavelength coverage and photometric quality of modern GC samples, such as used here, is not by itself sufficient to better constrain the GC formation histories. We present here parameter distributions and fundamental scaling relations for 190 galaxies as part of the Spectroscopy and H-bang Imaging of Virgo cluster galaxies (SHIVir) survey. We find the distribution of galaxy velocities to be bimodal about $V_{\rm circ} \sim 125$ km ${\rm s^{-1}}$, hinting at the existence of dynamically unstable modes in the inner regions of galaxies. An analysis of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) of late-type galaxies (LTGs) and fundamental plane (FP) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) is also presented, yielding a compendium of galaxy scaling relations. The slope and zero-point of the Virgo TFR match those of field galaxies, while scatter differences likely reflect distinct evolutionary histories. The velocities minimizing scatter for the TFR and FP are measured at large apertures where the baryonic fraction becomes subdominant. While TFR residuals remain independent of any galaxy parameters, FP residuals (i.e. the FP "tilt") correlate strongly with the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio, yielding stringent galaxy formation constraints. Furthermore, we construct a stellar-to-total mass relation (STMR) for ETGs and LTGs and find linear but distinct trends over the range $M_{*} = 10^{8-11} M_{\odot}$. Stellar-to-halo mass relations (SHMRs), which probe the extended dark matter halo, can be scaled down to masses estimated within the optical radius, showing a tight match with the Virgo STMR at low masses; however, possibly inadequate halo abundance matching prescriptions and broad radial scalings complicate this comparison at all masses. While ETGs appear to be more compact than LTGs of the same stellar mass in projected space, their mass-size relations in physical space are identical. We build a background cluster candidate catalog from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, using our detection algorithm RedGOLD. The NGVS covers 104$deg^2$ of the Virgo cluster in the $u^*,g,r,i,z$-bandpasses to a depth of $ g \sim 25.7$~mag (5$\sigma$). Part of the survey was not covered or has shallow observations in the $r$--band. We build two cluster catalogs: one using all bandpasses, for the fields with deep $r$--band observations ($\sim 20 \ deg^2$), and the other using four bandpasses ($u^*,g,i,z$) for the entire NGVS area. Based on our previous CFHT-LS W1 studies, we estimate that both of our catalogs are $\sim100\%$($\sim70\%$) complete and $\sim80\%$ pure, at $z\le 0.6$($z\lesssim1$), for galaxy clusters with masses of $M\gtrsim10^{14}\ M_{\odot}$. We show that when using four bandpasses, though the photometric redshift accuracy is lower, RedGOLD detects massive galaxy clusters up to $z\sim 1$ with completeness and purity similar to the five-band case. This is achieved when taking into account the bias in the richness estimation, which is $\sim40\%$ lower at $0.5\le z<0.6$ and $\sim20\%$ higher at $0.6 1.4 \times 10^{14} \rm M_{\odot}$ and $0.08
