Context. Terzan 5 and Liller 1 are the only bulge stellar clusters hosting multi-iron and multi-age stellar populations. They are therefore claimed to constitute a novel class of astrophysical objects: the fossils of massive star-forming clumps that possibly sank to the center of the Milky Way and contributed to the formation of the bulge. This is based on the hypothesis that the ancient clumps were able to retain iron-enriched supernova ejecta, later giving rise to younger and more metal-rich populations. Aims. A way to investigate this scenario is reconstructing their star formation histories (SFHs) and proving a prolonged and multi-episode star formation activity. Methods. Leveraging ground- and space-based high-resolution images, we derived the SFH of Terzan 5 by employing the color-magnitude diagram fitting routine SFERA. Results. The best-fit solution predicts an old, main peak occurred between 12 and 13 Gyr ago that generated 70 % of the current stellar mass, followed by a lower-rate star formation activity with two main additional bursts. Conclusions. These results indicate that Terzan 5, similarly to Liller 1, experienced a prolonged, multiepisode star formation activity, fueled by metal-enriched gas deposited in its central regions, in agreement with the expectations of a self-enrichment scenario in a primordial massive clump., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 12 pages, 11 figures

By using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT, we measured radial and rotational velocities of 115 stars in the Galactic globular cluster M55. After field decontamination based on the radial velocity values, the final sample of member stars is composed of 32 blue straggler stars (BSSs) and 76 reference stars populating the red giant and horizontal branches of the cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the totality of red giant branch stars has negligible rotation ($<$ 10 km s$^{-1}$), and horizontal branch stars have rotational velocities of 40 km s$^{-1}$ at most. In contrast, the BSS rotational velocity distribution shows a long tail extending up to $\sim$ 200 km s$^{-1}$, with 15 BSSs (out of 32) spinning faster than 40 km s$^{-1}$. By defining the threshold for fast rotating BSSs at 40 km s$^{-1}$, this sets the percentage of these stars at 47 $\pm$ 14 %. Such a large value has never been found before in any globular clusters. It is roughly comparable to that measured in other loose systems ($\omega$ Centauri, M4, and NGC 3201) and significantly larger than that observed in high-density clusters (as 47 Tucanae, NGC 6397, NGC 6752, and M30). This evidence supports a scenario where recent BSS formation is occurring in low-density environments. We present the results of a study aimed at characterizing the kinematics of the inner regions of the halo globular cluster M75 (NGC 6864) based on data acquired as part of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters. Our analysis includes the first determination of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile in the core region of M75. By using MUSE/NFM observations, we obtained a sample of $\sim 1900$ radial velocity measurements from individual stars located within $16''$ (corresponding to about $r < 3 r_c$ where $r_c$ is the estimated core radius of the system) from the cluster center. After an appropriate selection of the most accurate velocity measures, we determined the innermost portion of the velocity dispersion profile, finding that it is characterized by a constant behavior and a central velocity dispersion of $\sigma_0\sim 9$ km s$^{-1}$. The simultaneous King model fitting to the projected velocity dispersion and density profiles allowed us to check and update previous determinations of the main structural parameters of the system. We also detected a mild hint of rotation in the central $\sim 7''$ from the center, with an amplitude of just $\sim 1.0$ km s$^{-1}$ and a position angle of the rotation axis of PA$_0 = 174\deg$. Intriguingly, the position angle is consistent with that previously quoted for the suspected rotation signal in the outer region of the cluster. Taking advantage of the high quality of the photometric catalog used for the analysis of the MUSE spectra, we also provide updated estimates of the cluster distance, age, and reddening., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In the context of the study of the size-age relationship observed in star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the investigation of its origin, here we present the determination of the structural parameters and the dynamical age of the massive cluster NGC 1835. We have used a powerful combination of optical and near-ultraviolet images acquired with the WFC3 onboard the HST to construct the star density profile from resolved star counts, determining the values of the core, half-mass and tidal radii through the comparison with the King model family. The same data also allowed us to evaluate the dynamical age of the cluster by using the 'dynamical clock'. This is an empirical method that quantifies the level of central segregation of blue stragglers stars (BSSs) within the cluster half-mass radius by means of the A+ parameter, which is defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a reference (lighter) population. The results confirm that NGC 1835 is a very compact cluster with a core radius of only 0.84 pc. The estimated value of A+ ($0.30\pm 0.04$) is the largest measured so far in the LMC clusters, providing evidence of a highly dynamically evolved stellar system. NGC 1835 nicely fits into the correlation between A+ and the central relaxation time and in the anti-correlation between A+ and the core radius defined by the Galactic and the Magellanic Cloud clusters investigated to date., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We recently introduced three new parameters that describe the shape of the normalized cumulative radial distribution (nCRD) of the innermost stars in globular clusters and trace the clusters dynamical evolution. Here we extend our previous investigations to the case of a large set of Monte Carlo simulations of globular clusters, started from a broad range of initial conditions. All the models are analyzed at the same age of 13 Gyr, when they have reached different evolutionary phases. The sample of models is well representative of the structural properties of the observed population of Galactic globular clusters. We confirm that the three nCRD parameters are powerful tools to distinguish systems in early stages of dynamical evolution, from those that already experienced core collapse. They might also help disentangle clusters hosting a low-mass intermediate-mass black hole of a few hundred solar masses, from cases with large concentrations of dark remnants in their centers. We present a high angular resolution multi-wavelength study of the massive globular cluster NGC 1835 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Thanks to a combination of optical and near ultraviolet images acquired with the WFC3 on board the HST, we performed a detailed inspection of the stellar population in this stellar system adopting a ``UV-guided search'' to optimize the detection of relatively hot stars. This allowed us to discover a remarkably extended horizontal branch (HB), spanning more than 4.5 magnitudes in both magnitude and colour from the region redder than the instability strip, up to effective temperatures of 30,000 K, and including a large population of RR Lyrae (67 confirmed variables, and 52 new candidates). This is the first time that such a feature has been detected in an extra-Galactic cluster, demonstrating that the physical conditions responsible for the formation of extended HBs are ubiquitous. The acquired dataset has been also used to redetermine the cluster distance modulus, reddening, and absolute age, yielding $(m-M)_0=18.58$, $E(B-V)=0.08$, and $t=12.5$ Gyr, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

High-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (\textit{HST}) optical observations have been used to perform the deepest photometric study of the poorly studied Galactic globular cluster NGC 6284. The deep colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) that we obtained reaches 6 magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. We provide the first determination of the gravitational centre ($C_{\rm grav}$) and density profile of the system from resolved stars. $C_{\rm grav}$ is significantly offset (by $1.5-3''$) from the values in the literature. The density profile shows the presence of a steep central cusp, unambiguously indicating that the cluster experienced the core-collapse phase. Updated values of the structural parameters and relaxation times of the system are provided. We also constructed the first high-resolution reddening map in the cluster direction, which allowed us to correct the evolutionary sequences in the CMD for the effects of differential reddening. Isochrone fitting to the corrected CMD provided us with new estimates of the cluster age, average colour excess, metallicity, and distance. We find an absolute age of $13.3 \pm 0.4$ Gyr, an average colour excess $E(B-V) = 0.32 \pm 0.01$, a metallicity [Fe/H]$= -1.36 \pm 0.01$, and a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0 = 15.61 \pm 0.04$ that sets the cluster distance at $13.2 \pm 0.2$ kpc from the Sun. The superb quality of the CMD allowed a clear-cut identification of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) bump, which is clearly distinguishable along the narrow RGB. We used ultra-deep observations obtained with the NIRCam aboard the James Webb Space Telescope to explore the stellar population of NGC 6440: a typical massive, obscured and contaminated globular cluster formed and orbiting within the Galactic bulge. Leveraging the exceptional capabilities of this camera, we sampled the cluster down to ~5 magnitudes below the main-sequence turn-off in the (mF115W , mF115W - mF200W ) colour-magnitude diagram. After carefully accounting for differential extinction and contamination by field interlopers, we find that the main sequence splits into two branches both above and below the characteristic knee. By comparing the morphology of the colour-magnitude diagram with a suitable set of isochrones, we argue that the upper main-sequence bi-modality is likely due to the presence of a He-enriched stellar population with a helium spread of DeltaY = 0.04. The lower main-sequence bi-modality can be attributed to variations in the abundance of water (i.e., oxygen) with Delta[O/Fe] ~ -0.4. This is the first evidence of both helium and oxygen abundance variations in a globular cluster purely based on JWST observations. These results open the window for future in-depth investigations of the multiple population phenomenon in clusters located in the Galactic bulge, which were previously unfeasible with near-UV observations, due to prohibitive reddening and crowding conditions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

With the goal of untangling the origin of extended main-sequence turnoffs (eMSTOs) and extended red clumps (eRCs) in star clusters, in this work we present the study of the intermediate-age cluster NGC 419, situated along the Bridge of the Small Magellanic Cloud. To this aim, we analyzed multi-epoch, high angular resolution observations acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope for this dynamically young cluster, which enabled the determination of precise proper motions and therefore the assessment of the cluster membership for each individual star in the field of view. With this unprecedented information at hand, we first studied the radial distribution of kinematically selected member stars in different eMSTO subregions. The absence of segregation supports the rotation scenario as the cause for the turnoff color extension and disfavors the presence of a prolonged period of star formation in the cluster. A similar analysis on the eRC of NGC 419 confirms the absence of segregation, providing further evidence against an age spread, which is at odds with previous investigations. Even so, the currently available evolutionary models including stellar rotation fail at reproducing the two photometric features simultaneously. We argue that either shortcomings in these models or a different origin for the red clump feature, such as a nonstandard differential mass loss along the red giant branch phase, are the only way to reconcile our observational findings with theoretical expectations., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A

We used high resolution spectra acquired at the Magellan Telescope to measure radial and rotational velocities of approximately 200 stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 3201. The surveyed sample includes Blue Stragglers Stars (BSSs) and reference stars in different evolutionary stages (main sequence turn-off, sub-giant, red giant and asymptotic giant branches). The average radial velocity value ($\langle V_r\rangle = 494.5 \pm 0.5$ km s$^{-1}$) confirms a large systemic velocity for this cluster and was used to distinguish 33 residual field interlopers. The final sample of member stars counts 67 BSSs and 114 reference stars. Similarly to what is found in other clusters, the totality of the reference stars has negligible rotation ($<20$ km s$^{-1}$), while the BSS rotational velocity distribution shows a long tail extending up to $\sim 200$ km s$^{-1}$, with 19 BSSs (out of 67) spinning faster than 40 km s$^{-1}$. This sets the percentage of fast rotating BSSs to $\sim 28\%$. Such a percentage is roughly comparable to that measured in other loose systems ($\omega$ Centauri, M4 and M55) and significantly larger than that measured in high-density clusters (as 47 Tucanae, NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and M30). This evidence supports a scenario where recent BSS formation (mainly from the evolution of binary systems) is occurring in low-density environments. We also find that the BSS rotational velocity tends to decrease for decreasing luminosity and surface temperature, similarly to what is observed in main sequence stars. In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the dynamical evolution of old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we have secured deep HST/WFC3 images of the massive cluster NGC 1835. In the field of view of the acquired images, at a projected angular separation of approximately 2 arcmin from the cluster, we detected the small stellar system KMK88-10. The observations provided the deepest color-magnitude diagram ever obtained for this cluster, revealing that it hosts a young stellar population with an age of 600-1000 Myr. The cluster surface brightness profile is nicely reproduced by a King model with a core radius rc = 4 arcsec (0.97 pc), an half-mass radius rhm = 12 arcsec (2.9 pc), and a concentration parameter c~1.3 corresponding to a truncation radius rt~81 arcsec (19.5 pc). We also derived its integrated absolute magnitude (MV=-0.71) and total mass (M~80-160 Msun). The most intriguing feature emerging from this analysis is that KMK88-10 presents a structure elongated in the direction of NGC 1835, with an intracluster over-density that suggests the presence of a tidal bridge between the two systems. Terzan 5 is a heavily obscured stellar system located in the inner Galaxy. It has been postulated to be a stellar relic, a Bulge Fossil Fragment witnessing the complex history of the assembly of the Milky Way bulge. In this paper, we follow the chemical enrichment of a set of putative progenitors of Terzan 5 to assess whether the chemical properties of this cluster fit within a formation scenario in which it is the remnant of a primordial building block of the bulge. We can explain the metallicity distribution function and the runs of different element-to-iron abundance ratios as functions of [Fe/H] derived from optical-infrared spectroscopy of giant stars in Terzan 5, by assuming that the cluster experienced two major star formation bursts separated by a long quiescent phase. We further predict that the most metal-rich stars in Terzan 5 are moderately He-enhanced and a large spread of He abundances in the cluster, Y = 0.26-0.335. We conclude that current observations fit within a formation scenario in which Terzan 5 originated from a pristine, or slightly metal-enriched, gas clump about one order of magnitude more massive than its present-day mass. Losses of gas and stars played a major role in shaping Terzan 5 the way we see it now. The iron content of the youngest stellar population is better explained if the white dwarfs that give rise to type Ia supernovae (the main Fe factories) sink towards the cluster center, rather than being stripped by the strong tidal forces exerted by the Milky Way in the outer regions., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Blue stragglers are anomalously luminous core hydrogen-burning stars formed through mass-transfer in binary/triple systems and stellar collisions. Their physical and evolutionary properties are largely unknown and unconstrained. Here we analyze 320 high-resolution spectra of blue stragglers collected in eight galactic globular clusters with different structural characteristics and show evidence that the fraction of fast rotating blue stragglers (with rotational velocities larger than 40 km/s) increases for decreasing central density of the host system. This trend suggests that fast spinning blue stragglers prefer low-density environments and promises to open an unexplored route towards understanding the evolutionary processes of these stars. Since large rotation rates are expected in the early stages of both formation channels, our results provide direct evidence for recent blue straggler formation activity in low-density environments and put strong constraints on the timescale of the collisional blue straggler slow-down processes., Comment: Published in Nature Communications

In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the properties of the so-called Bulge Fossil Fragments (the fossil remnants of the bulge formation epoch), here we present the first determination of the metallicity distribution of Liller 1. For a sample of 64 individual member stars we used ESO- MUSE spectra to measure the equivalent width of the CaII triplet and then derive the iron abundance. To test the validity of the adopted calibration in the metal-rich regime, the procedure was first applied to three reference bulge globular clusters (NGC 6569, NGC 6440, and NGC 6528). In all the three cases, we found single-component iron distributions, with abundance values fully in agreement with those reported in the literature. The application of the same methodology to Liller 1 yielded, instead, a clear bimodal iron distribution, with a sub-solar component at $\text{[Fe/H]}= -0.48\,$dex ($\sigma = 0.22$) and a super-solar component at $\text{[Fe/H]}= +0.26\,$dex ($\sigma = 0.17$). The latter is found to be significantly more centrally concentrated than the metal-poor population, as expected in a self-enrichment scenario and in agreement with what found in another bulge system, Terzan 5. The obtained metallicity distribution is astonishingly similar to that predicted by the reconstructed star formation history of Liller 1, which is characterized by three main bursts and a low, but constant, activity of star formation over the entire lifetime. Recently, a new class of white dwarfs (dubbed ``slowly cooling WDs'') has been identified in two globular clusters (namely M13 and NGC 6752) showing a horizontal branch (HB) morphology with an extended blue tail. The cooling rate of these WDs is reduced by stable thermonuclear hydrogen burning in their residual envelope, and they are thought to be originated by stars that populate the blue tail of the HB and then skip the asymptotic giant branch phase. Consistently, no evidence of such kind of WDs has been found in M3, a similar cluster with no blue extension of the HB. To further explore this phenomenon, we took advantage of deep photometric data acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope in the near-ultraviolet and investigate the bright portion of the WD cooling sequence in M5, another Galactic globular cluster with HB morphology similar to M3. The normalized WD luminosity function derived in M5 turns out to be impressively similar to that observed in M3, in agreement with the fact that the stellar mass distribution along the HB of these two systems is almost identical. The comparison with theoretical predictions is consistent with the fact that the cooling sequence in this cluster is populated by canonical (fast cooling) WDs. Thus, the results presented in this paper provide further support to the scenario proposing a direct causal connection between the slow cooling WD phenomenon and the horizontal branch morphology of the host stellar cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted in the ApJ

In the context of a project aimed at characterizing the properties of star clusters in the Galactic bulge, here we present the determination of the internal kinematics and structure of the massive globular cluster NGC 6569. The kinematics has been studied by means of an unprecedented spectroscopic dataset acquired in the context of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, combining the observations from four different spectrographs. We measured the line-of-sight velocity of a sample of almost 1300 stars distributed between ~0.8" and 770" from the cluster center. From a sub-sample of high-quality measures, we determined the velocity dispersion profile of the system over its entire radial extension (from ~ 5" to ~ 200" from the center), finding the characteristic behavior usually observed in globular clusters, with a constant inner plateau and a declining trend at larger radii. The projected density profile of the cluster has been obtained from resolved star counts, by combining high-resolution photometric data in the center, and the Gaia EDR3 catalog radially extended out to ~20' for a proper sampling of the Galactic field background. The two profiles are properly reproduced by the same King model, from which we estimated updated values of the central velocity dispersion, main structural parameters (such as the King concentration, the core, half-mass, and tidal radii), total mass, and relaxation times. Our analysis also reveals a hint of ordered rotation in an intermediate region of the cluster (40"

We have used the ``dynamical clock'' to measure the level of dynamical evolution reached by three Galactic globular clusters (namely, NGC 3201, NGC 6316 and NGC 6440). This is an empirical method that quantifies the level of central segregation of blue stragglers stars (BSSs) within the cluster half-mass radius by means of the $A^+_{rh}$ parameter, defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a lighter population. The total sample with homogeneous determinations of $A^+_{rh}$ now counts a gran-total of 59 clusters: 52 old GCs in the Milky Way (including the three investigated here), 5 old clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and 2 young systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The three objects studied here nicely nest into the correlation between $A^+_{rh}$ and the central relaxation time defined by the previous sample, thus proving and consolidating the use of the dynamical clock as an excellent tracer of the stage of star cluster dynamical evolution in different galactic environments. By studying the normalized cumulative radial distribution (nCRD) of the stars in the central region of a Monte Carlo-simulated globular cluster, we recently defined three parameters able to pinpoint the stage of internal dynamical evolution reached by the system: $A_5$ (i.e., the area subtended by the nCRD within 5$\%$ the half-mass radius, $r_h$), $P_5$ (the value of the nCRD at 5$\%$ $r_h$), and $S_{2.5}$ (the slope of the nCRD at 2.5$\%$ $r_h$). Here we extend the analysis and explore the effects that different fractions (0$\%$, 10$\%$, and 20$\%$) of primordial binaries and stellar-mass black holes (BHs) induce on the dynamical history of the system. As expected, the gradual contraction of the cluster becomes milder and core collapse shallower for increasing binary fraction. Nevertheless, the cluster dynamical evolution is still properly traced by the three parameters. For models with a larger initial retention of stellar mass BHs the evolution depends on the timescale of their subsequent dynamical ejection. An early dynamical ejection of BHs results in a long-term evolution of the three parameters similar to that found in systems with no initial BH retention. Conversely, in the model that retains a large number of BHs for extended time (slow dynamical ejection of BHs), the system is characterized by a less concentrated structure and by the lack of significant temporal evolution of the three parameters. The smaller values of the three parameters found in this case might be used to indirectly infer the possible presence of BHs in the cluster., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

In the context of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, here we present the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile of NGC 6440, a massive globular cluster located in the Galactic bulge. By combining the data acquired with four different spectrographs, we obtained the radial velocity of a sample of $\sim 1800$ individual stars distributed over the entire cluster extension, from $\sim$0.1$"$ to 778$"$ from the center. Using a properly selected sample of member stars with the most reliable radial velocity measures, we derived the velocity dispersion profile up to 250$"$ from the center. The profile is well described by the same King model that best fits the projected star density distribution, with a constant inner plateau (at ${\sigma}_0 \sim $ 12 km s$^{-1}$) and no evidence of a central cusp or other significant deviations. Our data allowed to study the presence of rotation only in the innermost regions of the cluster (r < 5$"$), revealing a well-defined pattern of ordered rotation with a position angle of the rotation axis of $\sim$132 $\pm$ 2{\deg} and an amplitude of $\sim$3 km s$^{-1}$ (corresponding to Vrot/${\sigma}_0 \sim$ 0.3). We used a combination of high-resolution optical images acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope and near-IR wide-field data to investigate the stellar density profile and the population of blue straggler star (BSS) in the Galactic globular cluster NGC6256, with the aim of probing its current stage of internal dynamical evolution. We found that the inner stellar density profile significantly deviates from a King model while is well reproduced by a steep cusp with a power-law slope alpha=-0.89, thus implying that the cluster is currently in the post core-collapse (PCC) phase. This is also confirmed by the very high segregation level of the BSS population measured through the A+ parameter. We also found that the distribution of BSSs in the color-magnitude diagram is characterized by a collimated blue sequence and a red more sparse component, as already observed in other three PCC clusters. The comparison with appropriate collisional models demonstrates that the vast majority of the BSSs lying along the collimated blue sequence is consistent with a generation of coeval (1 Gyr-old) stars with different masses originated by an event that highly enhanced the collisional rate of the system (i.e. the core collapse). This study confirms that the segregation level of BSSs is a powerful dynamical diagnostic also of star cluster in a very advanced stage of dynamical evolution. Moreover, it pushes forward the possibility of using the morphology of the BSS in the color-magnitude diagram as a tracer of the core-collapse and subsequent dynamical evolutionary phases., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The level of central segregation of Blue Straggler stars proved to be an excellent tracer of the dynamical evolution of old star clusters (the so-called "dynamical clock"), both in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The $A^{+}$ parameter, used to measure the Blue Stragglers degree of segregation, has in fact been found to strongly correlate with the parent cluster central relaxation time. Here we studied the Blue-Straggler population of two young stellar systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud, namely NGC 339 (which is 6 Gyr old) and NGC 419 (with an age of only 1.5 Gyr), in order to study their dynamical state. Thanks to multi-epoch, high angular resolution Hubble Space Telescope observations available for both clusters, we took advantage of the stellar proper motions measured in the regions of the two systems and we selected a population of likely cluster members, removing the strong contamination from Small Magellanic Cloud stars. This enabled us to study, with unprecedented accuracy, the radial distribution of Blue Stragglers in these two extragalactic clusters and to measure their dynamical age. As expected for such young clusters, we found that both systems are poorly evolved from the dynamical point of view, also fully confirming that the $A^{+}$ parameter is a sensitive "clock hand" even in the dynamically-young regime., Comment: 12 pages,11 figures, Accepted for publication by ApJ

Chemical tagging is a powerful tool to reveal the origin of stars and globular clusters (GCs), especially when dynamics alone cannot provide robust answers. So far, mostly $\alpha$- and neutron capture elements have been used to distinguish stars born in the Milky Way (MW) from those born in external environments such as that of dwarf galaxies. Here, instead, we use iron-peak elements abundances to investigate the origin of a sample of metal-rich globular clusters. By homogeneously analyzing high-resolution UVES spectra of giant stars belonging to four metal-rich GCs (namely NGC 5927, NGC 6388, NGC 6441, NGC 6496), we find that while the $\alpha$-elements Si and Ca have similar abundance ratios for all the four GCs, and Ti and neutron capture elements (La, Ba and Eu) only show a marginal discrepancy, a stark difference is found when considering the abundances of some iron-peak elements (Sc, V and Zn). In particular, NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 have abundance ratios for these iron-peak elements significantly lower (by ~ 0.5 dex) than those measured in NGC 5927 and NGC 6496, which are clearly identified as born in-situ MW clusters through an analysis of their orbital properties. We used optical images acquired with the Wide Field Camera of the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope and near-infrared data from GeMS/GSAOI to construct a high-resolution extinction map in the direction of the bulge stellar system Liller 1. In spite of its appearance of a globular cluster, Liller 1 has been recently found to harbor two stellar populations with remarkably different ages, and it is the second complex stellar system with similar properties (after Terzan5) discovered in the bulge, thus defining a new class of objects: the Bulge Fossil Fragments. Because of its location in the inner bulge of the Milky Way, very close to the Galactic plane, Liller 1 is strongly affected by large and variable extinction. The simultaneous study of both the optical and the near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams revealed that the extinction coefficient R$_V$ in the direction of Liller 1 has a much smaller value than commonly assumed for diffuse interstellar medium (R$_V=2.5$, instead of 3.1), in agreement with previous findings along different light paths to the Galactic bulge. The derived differential reddening map has a spatial resolution ranging from $1''$ to $3''$ over a field of view of about $90''$X$90''$. We present a new identity card for the cluster NGC 6440 in the Galactic Bulge. We have used a combination of high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope images, wide-field ground-based observations performed with the ESO-FORS2, and the public survey catalog Pan-STARRS, to determine the gravitational center, projected density profile and structural parameters of this globular from resolved star counts. The new determination of the cluster center differs by ~ 2" (corresponding to 0.08 pc) from the previous estimate, which was based on the surface brightness peak. The star density profile, extending out to 700" from the center and suitably decontaminated from the Galactic field contribution, is best-fitted by a King model with significantly larger concentration ($c=1.86\pm0.06$) and smaller core radius ($r_c=6.4"\pm0.3"$) with respect to the literature values. By taking advantage of high-quality optical and near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams, we also estimated the cluster age, distance and reddening. The luminosity of the RGB-bump was also determined. This study indicates that the extinction coefficient in the bulge, in the direction of the cluster has a value ($R_V=2.7$) that is significantly smaller than that traditionally used for the Galaxy ($R_V=3.1$). The corresponding best-fit values of the age, distance and color excess of NGC 6440 are 13 Gyr, 8.3 kpc and $E(B-V)\sim 1.27$, respectively. These new determinations also allowed us to update the values of the central ($t_{rc}=2.5\ 10^7$ yr) and half-mass ($t_{rh}=10^9$ yr) relaxation times, suggesting that NGC 6440 is in a dynamically evolved stage., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 19 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables

We report on the discovery of the companion star to the millisecond pulsar J1631+3627F in the globular cluster M13. By means of a combination of optical and near-UV high-resolution observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, we identified the counterpart at the radio source position. Its location in the color-magnitude diagrams reveals that the companion star is a faint (V \sim 24.3) He-core white dwarf. We compared the observed companion magnitudes with those predicted by state-of-the-art binary evolution models and found out that it has a mass of 0.23 \pm 0.03 Msun, a radius of 0.033^+0.004_-0.005 Rsun and a surface temperature of 11500^+1900_-1300 K. Combining the companion mass with the pulsar mass function is not enough to determine the orbital inclination and the neutron star mass; however, the last two quantities become correlated: we found that either the system is observed at a low inclination angle, or the neutron star is massive. In fact, assuming that binaries are randomly aligned with respect to the observer line of sight, there is a \sim 70% of probability that this system hosts a neutron star more massive than 1.6 Msun. In fact, the maximum and median mass of the neutron star, corresponding to orbital inclination angles of 90 deg and 60 deg, are M_NS,max = 3.1 \pm 0.6 Msun and M_NS,med = 2.4 \pm 0.5 Msun, respectively. On the other hand, assuming also an empirical neutron star mass probability distribution, we found that this system could host a neutron star with a mass of 1.5 \pm 0.1 Msun if orbiting with a low-inclination angle around 40 deg., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ

We used a set of moderately-deep and high-resolution optical observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope to investigate the properties of the stellar population in the heavily obscured bulge globular cluster NGC 6256. The analysis of the color-magnitude diagram revealed a stellar population with an extended blue horizontal branch and severely affected by differential reddening, which was corrected taking into account color excess variations up to \delta E(B-V) ~ 0.51. We implemented a Monte Carlo Markov Chain technique to perform the isochrone fitting of the observed color-magnitude diagram in order to derive the stellar age, the cluster distance and the average color excess in the cluster direction. Using different set of isochrones we found that NGC 6256 is characterized by a very old stellar age around 13.0 Gyr, with a typical uncertainty of ~ 0.5 Gyr. We also found an average color excess E(B-V) = 1.19 and a distance from the Sun of 6.8 kpc. We then derived the cluster gravitational center and measured its absolute proper motion using the Gaia-DR2 catalog. All this was used to back-integrate the cluster orbit in a Galaxy-like potential and measure its integrals of motion. It turned out that NGC 6256 is currently in a low-eccentricity orbit entirely confined within the bulge and its integrals of motion are fully compatible with a cluster purely belonging to the Galaxy native globular cluster population. All these pieces of evidence suggest that NGC 6256 is an extremely old relic of the past history of the Galaxy, formed during the very first stages of its assembly., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ

We used optical images acquired with the UVIS channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 on board of the Hubble Space Telescope to construct the first high-resolution extinction map in the direction of NGC 6440, a globular cluster located in the bulge of our Galaxy. The map has a spatial resolution of 0.5" over a rectangular region of about 160" X 240" around the cluster center, with the long side in the North-West/South-East direction. We found that the absorption clouds show patchy and filamentary sub-structures with extinction variations as large as $\delta {\rm E}(B-V)\sim0.5$ mag. We also performed a first-order proper motion analysis to distinguish cluster members from field interlopers. After the field decontamination and the differential reddening correction, the cluster sequences in the color-magnitude diagram appear much better defined, providing the best optical color-magnitude diagram so far available for this cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ; 14 pages, 8 figures and 1 table. The Hubble Space Telescope has produced astonishing science over the past thirty years. Hubble's productivity can continue to soar for years to come provided some worn out components get upgraded. While powerful new ground-based and space telescopes are expected to come online over the next decade, none of them will have the UV capabilities that make Hubble a unique observatory. Without Hubble, progress in UV and blue optical astrophysics will be halted. Observations at these wavelengths are key for a range of unresolved astrophysics questions, ranging from the characterization of solar system planets to understanding interaction of galaxies with the intergalactic medium and the formation history of the universe. Hubble will remain our only source of high-angular resolution UV imaging and high-sensitivity UV spectroscopy for the next two decades, offering the ability for continued unique science and maximizing the science return from complementary observatories. Therefore, we recommend that NASA, ESA, and the private sector study the scientific merit, technical feasibility, and risk of a new servicing mission to Hubble to boost its orbit, fix aging components, and expand its instrumentation. Doing so would: 1) keep Hubble on its path to reach its unmet full potential, 2) extend the mission's lifetime past the next decade, which will maximize the synergy of Hubble with other upcoming facilities, and 3) enable and enhance the continuation of scientific discoveries in UV and optical astrophysics., Comment: White Paper submitted to the NAS call for Astro2020 Decadal Survey APC papers

In this paper we report on the discovery of a double blue straggler star (BSS) sequence in the core of the core-collapsed cluster M15 (NGC 7078). We performed a detailed photometric analysis of the extremely dense core of the cluster using a set of images secured with the Advanced Camera for Survey in the High Resolution Channel mode on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. The proper combination of the large number of single frames in the near-UV (F220W), and blue (F435W) filters allowed us to perform a superb modeling of the Point Spread Function and an accurate deblending procedure. The Color-Magnitude diagram revealed the presence of two distinct parallel sequences of blue stragglers. In particular, the blue BSS sequence is characterized by the intriguing presence of two different branches. The first branch appears extremely narrow, it extends up to 2.5 magnitudes brighter than the cluster main-sequence turnoff (MS-TO) point, and it is nicely reproduced by a 2 Gyr-old collisional isochrone. The second branch extends up to 1.5 magnitudes from the MS-TO and it is reproduced by a 5.5 Gyr-old collisional isochrone. Our observations suggest that each of these branches is mainly constituted by a population of nearly coeval collisional BSS of different masses generated during two episodes of high collisional activity. We discuss the possibility that the oldest episode corresponds to the core-collapse event (occurred about 5.5 Gyr ago), while the most recent one (occurred about 2 Gyr ago) is associated with a core oscillation in the post-core collapse evolution. The discovery of these features provides further strong evidence in support of the connection between the BSS properties and GC dynamical evolution, and it opens new perspectives on the study of core-collapse and post core-collapse evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ

We measure how the slope $\alpha$ of the stellar mass function (MF) changes as a function of clustercentric distance $r$ in five Galactic globular clusters and compare $\alpha(r)$ to predictions from direct $N$-body star cluster simulations. Theoretical studies predict that $\alpha(r)$ (which traces the degree of mass segregation in a cluster) should steepen with time as a cluster undergoes two-body relaxation and that the amount by which the global MF can evolve from its initial state due to stellar escape is directly linked to $\alpha(r)$. We find that the amount of mass segregation in M10, NGC 6218, and NGC 6981 is consistent with their dynamical ages, but only the global MF of M10 is consistent with its degree of mass segregation as well. NGC 5466 and NGC 6101 on the other hand appear to be less segregated than their dynamical ages would indicate. Furthermore, despite the fact that the escape rate of stars in non-segregated clusters is independent of stellar mass, both NGC 5466 and NGC 6101 have near-flat MFs. We discuss various mechanisms which could produce non-segregated clusters with near-flat MFs, including higher mass-loss rates and black hole retention, but argue that for some clusters (NGC 5466 and NGC 6101) explaining the present-day properties might require either a non-universal IMF or a much more complex dynamical history., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We used a dataset of archival Hubble Space Telescope images obtained through the F555W, F814W and F656N filters, to perform a complete search for objects showing $H\alpha$ emission in the globular cluster NGC 6397. As photometric diagnostic, we used the $(V-H\alpha)_0$ color excess in the $(V-H\alpha)_0$-$(V-I)_0$ color-color diagram. In the analysed field of view, we identified 53 $H\alpha$ emitters. In particular, we confirmed the optical counterpart to 20 X-ray sources (7 cataclysmic variables, 2 millisecond pulsars and 11 active binaries) and identified 33 previously unknown sources, thus significantly enlarging the population of known active binaries in this cluster. We report the main characteristics for each class of objects. Photometric estimates of the equivalent width of the $H\alpha$ emission line, were derived from the $(V-H\alpha)_0$-excess and, for the first time, compared to the spectroscopic measurements obtained from the analysis of MUSE spectra. The very good agreement between the spectroscopic and photometric measures fully confirmed the reliability of the proposed approach to measure the $H\alpha$ emission. The search demonstrated the efficiency of this novel approach to pinpoint and measure $H\alpha$-emitters, thus offering a powerful tool to conduct complete census of objects whose formation and evolution can be strongly affected by dynamical interactions in star clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ; 14 pages, 8 Figures, 1 Table

We use the Chandrasekhar formalism and direct N-body simulations to study the effect of dynamical friction on a test object only slightly more massive than the field stars, orbiting a spherically symmetric background of particles with a mass spectrum. The main goal is to verify whether the dynamical friction time (t_DF) develops a non-monotonic radial-dependence that could explain the bimodality of the Blue Straggler radial distributions observed in globular clusters. In these systems, in fact, relaxation effects lead to a mass and velocity radial segregation of the different mass components, so that mass-spectrum effects on t_DF are expected to be dependent on radius. We find that, in spite of the presence of different masses, t_DF is always a monotonic function of radius, at all evolutionary times and independently of the initial concentration of the simulated cluster. This because the radial dependence of t_DF is largely dominated by the total mass density profile of the background stars (which is monotonically decreasing with radius). Hence, a progressive temporal erosion of the BSS population at larger and larger distances from the cluster center remains the simplest and the most likely explanation of the shape of the observed BSS radial distributions, as suggested in previous works. We also confirm the theoretical expectation that approximating a multi-mass globular cluster as made of (averaged) equal-mass stars can lead to significant overestimates of t_DF within the half-mass radius., Comment: In press on ApJ

We have measured absolute proper motions for the three populations intercepted in the direction of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681: the cluster itself, the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and the field. For this we used Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS optical imaging data separated by a temporal baseline of 5.464 years. Five background galaxies were used to determine the zero point of the absolute-motion reference frame. The resulting absolute proper motion of NGC 6681 is ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta, \mu_{\delta}$)=($1.58\pm0.18, -4.57\pm0.16$) \masyr. This is the first estimate ever made for this cluster. For the Sgr dSph we obtain ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta, \mu_{\delta})=(-2.54\pm0.18, -1.19\pm0.16$) \masyr, consistent with previous measurements and with the values predicted by theoretical models. The absolute proper motion of the Galaxy population in our field of view is ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta, \mu_{\delta})=(-1.21\pm0.27, -4.39\pm0.26$) \masyr. In this study we also use background Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal stars to determine the rotation of the globular cluster in the plane of the sky and find that NGC 6681 is not rotating significantly:\ $v_{\rm rot}=0.82\pm1.02$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$ at a distance of 1 arcmin from the cluster center., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

Blue Straggler stars are present in all the properly observed Globular Clusters. They mimic a rejuvenated stellar population and their existence has been a puzzle for many years. We performed an extensive spectroscopic survey of the surface abundances and the rotational velocities of Blue Straggler stars in different Globular Clusters, by using the high-resolution spectrograph FLAMES@VLT in the UVES+GIRAFFE combined mode. We present a detailed comparison between far-UV/optical colour Magnitude Diagrams obtained with high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope data and suitable theoretical models for three Galactic Globular Clusters: M3, M13 and M79. These systems represents a classical example of clusters in the intermediate metallicity regime that, even sharing similar metal content and age, show remarkably different Horizontal Branch morphologies. As a consequence, the observed differences in the colour distributions of Horizontal Branch stars cannot be interpreted in terms of either first (metallicity) or a second parameter such as age. We investigate here the possible role of variations of initial Helium abundance (Y). Thanks to the use of a proper setup of far-UV filters, we are able to put strong constraints on the maximum Y (Y_{max}) values compatible with the data. We find differences Delta Y_{max} ~ 0.02-0.04 between the clusters with M13 showing the largest value (Y_{max} ~ 0.30) and M3 the smallest (Y_{max} ~ 0.27). We have used high-resolution spectra obtained with the multifiber facility FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory to derive kinematic properties and chemical abundances of Fe, O, Mg and Si for 89 stars in the disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The derived metallicity and [alpha/Fe], obtained as the average of O, Mg and Si abundances, allow us to draw a preliminary scheme of the star formation history occurred in this region of the LMC. The derived metallicity distribution shows two main components: one component (comprising ~ 84% of the sample) is peaked at [Fe/H] = -0.48 dex and it shows an [alpha/Fe] ratio slightly under solar ([alpha/Fe] ~ -0.1 dex). This population was probably originated by the main star formation event occurred 3-4 Gyr ago (possibly triggered by tidal capture of the Small Magellanic Cloud). The other component (comprising ~ 16% of the sample) is peaked at [Fe/H] ~ -1 dex and it shows an [alpha/Fe] ~ 0.2 dex. This population was probably generated during the long quiescent epoch of star formation in between the first episode and the most recent bursts. Indeed, in our sample we do not find stars with chemical properties similar to the old LMC globular clusters nor to the iron-rich and alpha-poor stars recently found in the LMC globular cluster NGC 1718 and predicted to be also in the LMC field, thus suggesting that both these components are small (< 1%) in the LMC disk population., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (25 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables)

We have used optical images acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope to construct the first high-resolution extinction map in the direction of Terzan 5, a peculiar stellar system in the inner bulge of our Galaxy. The map has a spatial resolution of 8" X 8", over a total FoV of 200" X 200". The absorption clouds show a patchy structure on a typical scale of 20" and extinction variations as large as delta E(B-V) = 0.67 mag, especially in the direction of the center of the system. These correspond to an absolute color excess ranging from E(B-V)=2.15 mag, up to 2.82 mag. After the correction for differential reddening, two distinct red giant branches become clearly visible in the color magnitude diagram of Terzan 5 and they well correspond to the two sub-populations with different iron abundances recently discovered in this system., Comment: Published by the Astrophysical Journal Letters, Volume 755, Issue 2, article id. We present ultraviolet (UV) integrated colors of 44 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) observed with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in both FUV and NUV bands. This data-base is the largest homogeneous catalog of UV colors ever published for stellar systems in our Galaxy. The proximity of GGCs makes it possible to resolve many individual stars even with the somewhat low spatial resolution of GALEX. This allows us to determine how the integrated UV colors are driven by hot stellar populations, primarily horizontal branch stars and their progeny. The UV colors are found to be correlated with various parameters commonly used to define the horizontal branch morphology. We also investigate how the UV colors vary with parameters like metallicity, age, helium abundance and concentration. We find for the first time that GCs associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy have (FUV-V) colors systematically redder than GGCs with the same metallicity. Finally, we speculate about the presence of an interesting trend, suggesting that the UV color of GCs may be correlated with the mass of the host galaxy, in the sense that more massive galaxies possess bluer clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. 36 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Using HST/WFPC2 data, we have performed a comparative study of the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) populations in the central regions of the globular clusters AM 1, Eridanus, Palomar 3, and Palomar 4. Located at distances RGC > 50 kpc from the Galactic Centre, these are (together with Palomar 14 and NGC 2419) the most distant clusters in the Halo. We determine their colour-magnitude diagrams and centres of gravity. The four clusters turn out to have similar ages (10.5-11 Gyr), significantly smaller than those of the inner-Halo globulars, and similar metallicities. By exploiting wide field ground based data, we build the most extended radial density profiles from resolved star counts ever published for these systems. These are well reproduced by isotropic King models of relatively low concentration. BSSs appear to be significantly more centrally segregated than red giants in all globular clusters, in agreement with the estimated core and half-mass relaxation times which are smaller than the cluster ages. Assuming that this is a signature of mass segregation, we conclude that AM 1 and Eridanus are slightly dynamically more evolved than Pal 3 and Pal 4., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, references updated

We present GALEX data for 44 Galactic globular clusters obtained during 3 GALEX observing cycles between 2004 and 2008. This is the largest homogeneous data set on the UV photometric properties of Galactic globular clusters ever collected. The sample selection and photometric analysis are discussed, and color-magnitude diagrams are presented. The blue and intermediate-blue horizontal branch is the dominant feature of the UV color-magnitude diagrams of old Galactic globular clusters. Our sample is large enough to display the remarkable variety of horizontal branch shapes found in old stellar populations. Other stellar types that are obviously detected are blue stragglers and post core-He burning stars. The main features of UV color-magnitude diagrams of Galactic globular clusters are briefly discussed. We used deep wide-field observations obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study the blue straggler star (BSS) population in the innermost five arcminutes of the remote Galactic globular cluster Palomar 14. The BSS radial distribution is found to be consistent with that of the normal cluster stars, showing no evidence of central segregation. Palomar 14 is the third system in the Galaxy (in addition to OmegaCentauri and NGC 2419) showing a population of BSS not centrally segregated. This is the most direct evidence that in Palomar 14 two-body relaxation has not fully established energy equipartition yet, even in the central regions (in agreement with the estimated half-mass relaxation time, which is significantly larger than the cluster age). Terzan5 is the globular cluster (GC)-like stellar system harboring the largest known population of MSPs. Using the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics demonstrator MAD at the ESO - VLT, we recently obtained a superb (K, J - K) color-magnitude diagram, which has revealed the existence of two horizontal branches (HBs) well separated in magnitude and colour (Ferraro et al. 2009, Nature,462, 483). A prompt spectroscopic follow-up with NIRSPEC@Keck has shown that the two populations have (1) significantly different iron content ([Fe/H]= -0.2 and +0.3 for the faint and the bright HB, respectively), (2) distinct [alpha/Fe] abundance patterns and (3) no evidence of the Al-O anti-correlation commonly observed in GCs. All these properties suggest that Ter 5 is far from being a genuine globular. Instead it has experienced the explosion of a huge number of supernovae (SNe), thus accounting for its high metal content and it should have been much more massive in the past than today, thus to retain the SN ejecta within its potential well. We present additional evidence that dust is really forming along the red giant branch (RGB) of 47 Tuc at luminosities ranging from above the horizontal branch to the RGB-tip (Origlia et al. 2007). The presence of dust had been inferred from an infrared excess in the (K-8) color, with K measured from high spatial resolution ground based near-IR photometry and "8" referring to Spitzer-IRAC 8 micron photometry. We show how (K-8) is a far more sensitive diagnostic for detecting tiny circumstellar envelopes around warm giants than colors using only the Spitzer-IRAC bands, for example the (3.6-8) color used by Boyer et al. (2010). In addition, we also show high resolution HST-ACS I band images of the giant stars which have (K-8) color excess. These images clearly demonstrate that Boyer et al (2010) statement that our detections of color excess associated with stars below the RGB-tip arise from blends and artefacts is simply not valid., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures
