Time-rescaling (TR) has been recently proposed as a method to engineer fast processes, also known as shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA), which enables the coherent control of quantum systems beyond the adiabatic regime [B. L. Bernardo, Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 013133 (2020)]. The method provides the Hamiltonians that generate the fast processes without requiring information about the instantaneous eigenstates of a reference protocol, whereas experimental implementations dismiss additional coupling fields when compared with adiabatic protocols. Here, we revisit the technique and show that the obtained fast dynamics are transitionless, similar to the ones designed via the famous counterdiabatic (CD) approach. We also show that the time evolution of the STA found via TR relates to that of the reference adiabatic protocol by a simple reparametrization of time. To illustrate our findings, we studied the problem of speeding up the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and found out that TR revealed quantum dynamics more robust to parameter variations than those provided by the CD technique. Quantum state tomography (QST), the process through which the density matrix of a quantum system is characterized from measurements of specific observables, is a fundamental pillar in the fields of quantum information and computation. In this work, we propose a simple QST method to reconstruct the density matrix of two qubits encoded in the polarization and path degrees of freedom of a single photon, which can be realized with a single linear-optical setup. We demonstrate that the density matrix can be fully described in terms of the Stokes parameters related to the two possibles paths of the photon, together with a quantum version of the two-point Stokes parameters introduced here. Wave-particle duality is certainly one of the most curious concepts of contemporary physics, which ascribes mutually exclusive behaviors to quantum systems that cannot be observed simultaneously. In the context of two-path interferometers, these two behaviors are usually described in terms of the visibility of interference fringes and the path distinguishability. Here, we use quantum information-theoretic tools to derive quantifiers of these two properties, which account for the combined influence of path probability and polarization, and demonstrate that they satisfy a complementarity relation. We further show that the derived quantities can work as probes in the study of open quantum dynamics by revealing interesting facets of environment actions, such as: decoherence, depolarization and scattering., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Charge exchange (CE) reactions offer a major opportunity to excite nuclear isovector modes, providing clues about the nuclear interaction in the medium. Moreover, double charge exchange (DCE) reactions are proving to be a tempting tool to access nuclear transition matrix elements (NME) related to double beta-decay processes. Through a multi-channel experimental analysis and a consistent theoretical approach of the $^{116}$Cd($^{20}$Ne,$^{20}$F)$^{116}$In single charge exchange (SCE) reaction at 306 MeV, we aim at disentangling from the experimental cross section the contribution of the competing mechanisms, associated with second or higher order sequential transfer and inelastic processes. We measured excitation energy spectra and absolute cross sections for elastic + inelastic, one-proton transfer and SCE channels, using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer to detect the ejectiles. For the first two channels, we also extracted the experimental cross section angular distributions. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions obtained by performing two-step distorted wave Born approximation and coupled reaction channel calculations. We employ spectroscopic amplitudes for single-particle transitions derived within a large-scale shell model approach and different optical potentials for modeling the initial and the final state interactions. The present study significantly mitigates the possible model dependence existing in the description of these complex reaction mechanisms, thanks to the reproduction of several channels at once. In particular, our work demonstrates that the two-step transfer mechanisms produce a non negligible contribution to the total cross section of the $^{116}$Cd($^{20}$Ne,$^{20}$F)$^{116}$In reaction channel, although a relevant fraction is still missing, being ascribable to the direct SCE mechanism, which is not addressed here., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Two-nucleon transfer reactions are essential tools to investigate specific features of the nuclearstructure such as the correlation among valence particles in the transfer process. Besides, transfer reactions may be an important channel to take into account in charge exchange processes since they can represent a competing contribution to the final cross section. The two-proton pickup transfer reaction 40Ca(18O,20Ne)38Ar has been measured at 270 MeV and the angular distributions for transitions to different excited states extracted. This work shows the analysis of the data performed by finite range coupled reaction channel and coupled channel Born approximation methods. Extensive shell-model calculations are performed to derive the one- and two-proton spectroscopic amplitudesfor the projectile and target overlaps. The role of the simultaneous and sequential two-proton transfer mechanisms to populate the measured final states or groups of states, mainly characterized by ahigh collectivity, is also discussed.

Background: Heavy-ion induced two-nucleon transfer reactions are powerful tools to reveal peculiar aspects of the atomic nucleus, such as pairing correlations, single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, and more. Also, these processes are in competition with the direct meson exchange in the double charge exchange reactions, which have recently attracted great interest due to their possible connection to neutrinoless double-beta decay. In this framework, the exploration of two-nucleon transfer reactions in the 20Ne+116Cd collision at energies above the Coulomb barrier is particularly relevant since the 116Cd nucleus is a candidate for the double-beta decay. Methods: We measured the excitation energy spectra and absolute cross sections for the two reactions using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer to detect the ejectiles. We performed direct coupled reaction channels and sequential distorted wave Born approximation calculations using the double folding S\~ao Paulo potential to model the initial and final state interactions. The spectroscopic amplitudes for two- and singleparticle transitions were derived by different nuclear structure approaches: microscopic large-scale shell model, interacting boson model-2 and quasiparticle random phase approximation. Results: The calculations are able to reproduce the experimental cross sections for both two-neutron and twoproton transfer reactions. The role of couplings with the inelastic channels are found to be important in the two-proton transfer case. A competition between the direct and the sequential process is found in the reaction mechanism. For the two-proton transfer case, the inclusion of the 1g7/2 and 2d5/2 orbitals in the model space is crucial.

We present a detailed discussion of a recently proposed method to evaluate complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for weakly bound systems. The method is applied to collisions of $^{7}$Li projectiles on different heavy targets, and the results are compared with the available data. Neutrinoless double beta decay (0v\b{eta}\b{eta}) is considered the best potential resource to access the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that neutrinos are their own anti-particles (Majorana particles). Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research "beyond Standard Model" and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) are used as a tool to extract information on the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} Nuclear Matrix Elements. In DCE reactions and \b{eta}\b{eta} decay indeed the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Thus the measurement of the DCE absolute cross-sections can give crucial information on \b{eta}\b{eta} matrix elements. In a wider view, the NUMEN international collaboration plans a major upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in the next years in order to increase the experimental production of nuclei of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest as candidates for 0v\b{eta}\b{eta}.

Excitation energy spectra and absolute cross section angular distributions were measured for the 13C(18O,16O)15C two-neutron transfer reaction at 84 MeV incident energy. This reaction selectively populates two-neutron configurations in the states of the residual nucleus. Exact finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations are used to analyse the data. Two approaches are discussed: the extreme cluster and the newly introduced microscopic cluster. The latter makes use of spectroscopic amplitudes in the centre of mass reference frame, derived from shell-model calculations using the Moshinsky transformation brackets. The results describe well the experimental cross section and highlight cluster configurations in the involved wave functions.

Background: Recently, a systematic exploration of two-neutron transfer induced by the ($^{18}$O, $^{16}$O) reaction on different targets has been performed. The high resolution data have been collected at the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer of the INFN-LNS laboratory in Catania and analyzed with the coupled reaction channel (CRC) approach. The simultaneous and sequential transfers of the two neutrons have been considered under the same theoretical framework without the need of adjustable factors in the calculations. Purpose: A detailed analysis of the one-neutron transfer cross sections is important to study the sequential two-neutron transfer. Here, we examine the ($^{18}$O, $^{17}$O) reaction on $^{16}$O, $^{28}$Si and $^{64}$Ni targets. These even-even nuclei allow for investigation of one-neutron transfer in distinct nuclear shell spaces. Method: The MAGNEX spectrometer was used to measure mass spectra of ejectiles and extract differential cross sections of one-neutron transfer to low-lying states. We adopted the same CRC formalism used in the sequential two-neutron transfer, including relevant channels and using spectroscopic amplitudes obtained from shell model calculations. We also compare with one-step distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). Results: For the $^{18}$O + $^{16}$O and the $^{18}$O + $^{28}$O systems we used two interactions in the shell model. The experimental angular distributions are reasonably well reproduced by the CRC calculations. In the $^{18}$O + $^{64}$Ni system, we considered only one interaction and the theoretical curve describes the shape and order of magnitude observed in the experimental data. Conclusions: Comparisons between experimental, DWBA and CRC angle-integrated cross sections suggest that excitations before or after the transfer of neutron is relevant in the $^{18}$O + $^{16}$O and $^{18}$O + $^{64}$Ni systems., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Background: Double charge exchange (DCE) nuclear reactions have recently attracted much interest as tools to provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-beta decay. In this framework, a good description of the reaction mechanism and a complete knowledge of the initial and final-state interactions are mandatory. Presently, not enough is known about the details of the optical potentials and nuclear response to isospin operators for many of the projectile-target systems proposed for future DCE studies. Among these, the 20Ne + 76Ge DCE reaction is particularly relevant due to its connection with 76Ge double-beta decay. Purpose: We intend to characterize the initial-state interaction for the 20Ne + 76Ge reactions at 306 MeV bombarding energy and determine the optical potential and the role of the couplings between elastic channel and inelastic transitions to the first low-lying excited states. Methods: We determine the experimental elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions, compare the theoretical predictions by adopting different models of optical potentials with the experimental data, and evaluate the coupling effect through the comparison of the distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with the coupled channels ones. Results: Optical models fail to describe the elastic angular distribution above the grazing angle (9.4{\deg}). A correction in the geometry to effectively account for deformation of the involved nuclear systems improves the agreement up to about 14{\deg}. Coupled channels effects are crucial to obtain good agreement at large angles in the elastic scattering cross section.

In this work we study the simultaneous and sequential two-neutron transfer mechanisms to the $^{28}$Si nucleus induced by (t,p) and ($^{18}$O, $^{16}$O) reactions. New experimental cross sections for the $^{28}$Si($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{30}$Si reaction at 84 MeV are also presented. Direct reaction calculations are carried out within the Exact Finite Range Coupled Reaction Channel, for the simultaneous transfer of the two-neutron cluster, and the second order Distorted Wave Born Approximation, for the sequential transfer. Two different models are considered to describe the two-neutron cluster. The spectroscopic information was obtained from shell model calculation with {\it psdmod} interaction for the target overlaps where the 1p$_{3/2}$, 1p$_{1/2}$, 1d$_{3/2}$, 1d$_{5/2}$ and 2s$_{1/2}$ orbitals are included as valence sub-space. We show that simultaneous and sequential two-neutron transfer are competing mechanisms for the population of the ground state in $^{30}$Si. A systematic analysis of the two-neutron transfer induced by the ($^{18}O,^{16}O$) indicates that static deformation of target nuclei impacts on the two-neutron transfer mechanism.

The article describes the main achievements of the NUMEN project together with an updated and detailed overview of the related R&D activities and theoretical developments. NUMEN proposes an innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the lifetime of the double beta decay by cross section measurements of heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Despite the two processes, namely neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions, are triggered by the weak and strong interaction respectively, important analogies are suggested. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state many-body wave-functions in the two types of processes and the formal similarity of the transition operators. First experimental results obtained at the INFN-LNS laboratory for the 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar reaction at 270 MeV, give encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. The two major aspects for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer. The former is used for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy ion beams and the latter is the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the experimental resolution and sensitivity required for the accurate measurement of the DCE cross sections at forward angles. However, the tiny values of such cross sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much larger than manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in this perspective is part of the NUMEN project and will be discussed in the article.
