Abstract

In real-world decision making, outcomes are often delayed, meaning individuals must make multiple decisions before receiving any feedback. Moreover, feedback can be presented in different ways: it may summarize the overall results of multiple decisions (aggregated feedback) or report the outcome of individual decisions after some delay (clustered feedback). Despite its importance, the timing and presentation of delayed feedback has received little attention in cognitive modeling of decision-making, which typically focuses on immediate feedback. To address this, we conducted an experiment to compare the effect of delayed vs. immediate feedback and aggregated vs. clustered feedback. We also propose a Hierarchical Instance-Based Learning (HIBL) model that captures how people make decisions in delayed feedback settings. HIBL uses a super-model that chooses between sub-models to perform the decision-making task until an outcome is observed. 2. Leveraging a Cognitive Model to Measure Subjective Similarity of Human and GPT-4 Written Content

Abstract

Cosine similarity between two documents can be computed using token embeddings formed by Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-4, and used to categorize those documents across a range of uses. However, these similarities are ultimately dependent on the corpora used to train these LLMs, and may not reflect subjective similarity of individuals or how their biases and constraints impact similarity metrics. This lack of cognitively-aware personalization of similarity metrics can be particularly problematic in educational and recommendation settings where there is a limited number of individual judgements of category or preference, and biases can be particularly relevant. To address this, we rely on an integration of an Instance-Based Learning (IBL) cognitive model with LLM embeddings to develop the Instance-Based Individualized Similarity (IBIS) metric. This similarity metric is beneficial in that it takes into account individual biases and constraints in a manner that is grounded in the cognitive mechanisms of decision making. To evaluate the IBIS metric, we also introduce a dataset of human categorizations of emails as being either dangerous (phishing) or safe (ham). 3. Towards Neural Network based Cognitive Models of Dynamic Decision-Making by Humans

Abstract

Modeling human cognitive processes in dynamic decision-making tasks has been an endeavor in AI for a long time because such models can help make AI systems more intuitive, personalized, mitigate any human biases, and enhance training in simulation. Some initial work has attempted to utilize neural networks (and large language models) but often assumes one common model for all humans and aims to emulate human behavior in aggregate. However, the behavior of each human is distinct, heterogeneous, and relies on specific past experiences in certain tasks. For instance, consider two individuals responding to a phishing email: one who has previously encountered and identified similar threats may recognize it quickly, while another without such experience might fall for the scam. In this work, we build on Instance Based Learning (IBL) that posits that human decisions are based on similar situations encountered in the past. However, IBL relies on simple fixed form functions to capture the mapping from past situations to current decisions. To that end, we propose two new attention-based neural network models to have open form non-linear functions to model distinct and heterogeneous human decision-making in dynamic settings. We experiment with two distinct datasets gathered from human subject experiment data, one focusing on detection of phishing email by humans and another where humans act as attackers in a cybersecurity setting and decide on an attack option. We conducted extensive experiments with our two neural network models, IBL, and GPT3.5, and demonstrate that the neural network models outperform IBL significantly in representing human decision-making, while providing similar interpretability of human decisions as IBL. Abstract

We generalize a Maximum Principle for optimal control problems involving sweeping systems previously derived in ``Necessary conditions for optimal control problems with sweeping systems and end point constraints'', by de Pinho, Ferreira and Smirnov, Optimization, N. 71, 11, 2022, to cover the case where the moving set may be nonsmooth. Noteworthy, we consider problems with constrained end point. A remarkable feature of our work is that we rely upon an ingenious smooth approximating family of standard differential equations in the vein of that used in ``Optimal Control involving Sweeping Processes'', by de Pinho, Ferreira and Smirnov, Set-Valued Var. Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on soccer athletes' decision making and visual search behavior. It was a single-blind, randomized, and experimental investigation. The 23 soccer athletes were pair-matched according to decision-making skill and then randomized into two groups: a-tDCS and sham. The decision making (during small-sided game and screen task) and visual search behavior were measured before and after the 8-week intervention. Only the a-tDCS group reduced response time in the decision-making screen task (p <.05). The a-tDCS group showed a higher number of fixations than sham group (p <.05) during the small-sided game. The a-tDCS group showed a lower duration of fixation than sham group (p <.05) during the small-sided game. Our results indicated that using a-tDCS over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex changed visual search behavior and improved the response time of decision-making skill. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cold-water corals are found extensively throughout the world's oceans and thus represent a valuable paleoceanographic archive - particularly at the intermediate depths. In Chapter 2 I investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of cold-water corals in the Northeast Atlantic over the past 150 thousand years (kyr). These data revealed that corals were thriving at low and mid-latitudes during the last glacial and deglacial intervals, but their presence at higher latitudes occurred only during warmer climates. Food supply and dissolved oxygen associated with oceanic dynamics (e.g., currents, fronts, upwelling) changed with similar timing to coral occurrence patterns suggesting a strong causal link with climate. In Chapters 3 and 4 I reconstructed seawater ¹⁴C and temperature of intermediate depths in the Northeast and Southwest Atlantic. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the intermediate waters at both sites were colder than present, and the similar ¹⁴C signature suggests an extension of southern-sourced waters into the Northeast Atlantic. During the early deglaciation, a pronounced warming and an increase in ¹⁴C at both locations were interpreted as a result of weakened Atlantic Meridional Oceanic Circulation (AMOC) and heat export from the Southern Ocean and downwelling diffusion. Together the precisely dated coral data revealed that changes at intermediate depths are linked to perturbations in AMOC and global climate shifts.
