We analyze critical time series of the order parameter generated with active to inactive phase transitions of spreading dynamics running on the top of heterogeneous networks. Different activation mechanisms that govern the dynamics near the critical point were investigated. The time series were analyzed using the visibility graph (VG) method where a disassortative degree correlation of the VG is a signature of criticality. In contrast, assortative correlation is associated with offcritical dynamics. The signature of criticality given by the VG is confirmed for collective activation phenomena, as in the case of homogeneous networks. Similarly, for a localized activation driven by a densely connected set of hubs, identified by a maximum k-core decomposition, critical times series were also successfully identified by the VG method. However, in the case of activation driven by sparsely distributed hubs, the time series criticality is blurred, being observable only for huge systems. In the case of strong structural localization induced by the presence of rare regions, an assortative VG degree correlation, typical of off-critical series, is observed. We conclude that while macroscopic times series remain good proxies for the analysis of criticality for collective or maximum k-core activation, systems under spatial localization can postpone the signatures of or, in case of extreme localization, lead to false negatives for criticality of time series., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Infections diseases are marked by recovering time distributions which can be far from the exponential one associated with Markovian/Poisson processes, broadly applied in epidemic compartmental models. In the present work, we tackled this problem by investigating a susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible model on networks with $\eta$ independent infectious compartments (SI$_{\eta}$RS), each one with a Markovian dynamics, that leads to a Gamma-distributed recovering times. We analytically develop a theory for the epidemic lifespan on star graphs with a center and $K$ leaves showing that the epidemic lifespan scales with a non-universal power-law $\tau_{K}\sim K^{\alpha/\mu\eta}$ plus logarithm corrections, where $\alpha^{-1}$ and $\mu^{-1}$ are the mean waning immunity and recovering times, respectively. Compared with standard SIRS dynamics with $\eta=1$ and the same mean recovering time, the epidemic lifespan on star graphs is severely reduced as the number of stages increases. In particular, the case $\eta\rightarrow\infty$ leads to a finite lifespan. Numerical simulations support the approximated analytical calculations. For the SIS dynamics, numerical simulations show that the lifespan increases exponentially with the number of leaves, with a nonuniversal rate that decays with the number of infectious compartments. We investigated the SI$_{\eta}$RS dynamics on power-law networks with degree distribution $P(K)\sim k^{-\gamma}$. When $\gamma<5/2$, the epidemic spreading is ruled by a maximum $k$-core activation, the alteration of the hub activity time does not alter either the epidemic threshold or the localization pattern. For $\gamma>3$, where hub mutual activation is at work, the localization is reduced but not sufficiently to alter the threshold scaling with the network size. The weighted planar stochastic (WPS) lattice introduces a topological disorder that emerges from a multifractal structure. Its dual network has a power-law degree distribution and is embedded in a two-dimensional space, forming a planar network. We modify the original recipe to construct WPS networks with degree distributions interpolating smoothly between the original power-law tail, $P(q)\sim q^{-\alpha}$ with exponent $\alpha\approx 5.6$, and a square lattice. We analyze the role of disorder in the modified WPS model, considering the critical behavior of the contact process. We report a critical scaling depending on the network degree distribution. The scaling exponents differ from the standard mean-field behavior reported for CP on infinite-dimensional (random) graphs with power-law degree distribution. Furthermore, the disorder present in the WPS lattice model is in agreement with the Luck-Harris criterion for the relevance of disorder in critical dynamics. However, despite the same wandering exponent $\omega=1/2$, the disorder effects observed for the WPS lattice are weaker than those found for uncorrelated disorder., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We introduce a multifractal optimal detrended fluctuation analysis to study the scaling properties of the one-dimensional Wolf-Villain (WV) model for surface growth. This model produces mounded surface morphologies for long time scales (up to $10^9$ monolayers) and its universality class remains controversial. Our results for the multifractal exponent $\tau(q)$ reveal an effective local roughness exponent consistent with a transient given by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth regime and Edward-Wilkinson (EW) universality class for negative and positive $q$-values, respectively. Therefore, although the results corroborate that long-wavelength fluctuations belong to the EW class in the hydrodynamic limit, as conjectured in the recent literature, a bifractal signature of the WV model with an MBE regime at short wavelengths was observed.

Discrete- and continuous-time approaches are frequently used to model the role of heterogeneity on dynamical interacting agents on the top of complex networks. While, on the one hand, one does not expect drastic differences between these approaches, and the choice is usually based on one's expertise or methodological convenience, on the other hand, a detailed analysis of the differences is necessary to guide the proper choice of one or another approach. We tackle this problem, by comparing both discrete- and continuous-time mean-field theories for the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model on random networks with power-law degree distributions. We compare the discrete epidemic link equations (ELE) and continuous pair quenched mean-field (PQMF) theories with the corresponding stochastic simulations, both theories that reckon pairwise interactions explicitly. We show that ELE converges to PQMF theory when the time step goes to zero. The epidemic localization analysis performed reckoning the inverse participation ratio (IPR) indicates that both theories present the same localization depence on the network degree exponent $\gamma$: for $\gamma<5/2$ the epidemic is localized on the maximum k-core of network with a vanishing in the infinite-size limit while for $\gamma>5/2$, the localization happens on hubs what leads to a finite value of IPR. However, the IPR and epidemic threshold of ELE depend on the time-step discretization such that a larger time-step leads to more localized epidemics. A remarkable difference between discrete and continuous time approaches is revealed in the epidemic prevalence near the epidemic threshold, in which the discrete-time stochastic simulations indicate a mean-field critical exponent $\theta=1$ instead of the value $\theta=1/(3-\gamma)$ obtained rigorously and verified numerically for the continuous-time SIS on the same networks., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

It is possible to investigate emergence in many real systems using time-ordered data. However, classical time series analysis is usually conditioned by data accuracy and quantity. A modern method is to map time series onto graphs and study these structures using the toolbox available in complex network analysis. An important practical problem to investigate the criticality in experimental systems is to determine whether an observed time series is associated with a critical regime or not. We contribute to this problem by investigating the mapping called visibility graph (VG) of a time series generated in dynamical processes with absorbing-state phase transitions. Analyzing degree correlation patterns of the VGs, we are able to distinguish between critical and off-critical regimes. One central hallmark is an asymptotic disassortative correlation on the degree for series near the critical regime in contrast with a pure assortative correlation observed for noncritical dynamics. We are also able to distinguish between continuous (critical) and discontinuous (noncritical) absorbing state phase transitions, the second of which is commonly involved in catastrophic phenomena. Rumors have ignited revolutions, undermined the trust in political parties, or threatened the stability of human societies. Such destructive potential has been significantly enhanced by the development of on-line social networks. Several theoretical and computational studies have been devoted to understanding the dynamics and to control rumor spreading. In the present work, a model of rumor-telling in opinion polarized networks was investigated through extensive computer simulations. The key mechanism is the coupling between ones' opinions and their leaning to spread a given information, either by supporting or opposing its content. We report that a highly modular topology of polarized networks strongly impairs rumor spreading, but the couplings between agent's opinions and their spreading/stifling rates can either further inhibit or, conversely, foster information propagation, depending on the nature of those couplings. In particular, a controversy-seeking mechanism, in which agents are stimulated to postpone their transitions to the stiffer state upon interactions with other agents of confronting opinions, enhances the rumor spreading. Previous work showed that the collective activity of large neuronal networks can be tamed to remain near its critical point by a feedback control that maximizes the temporal correlations of the mean-field fluctuations. Since such correlations behave similarly near instabilities across nonlinear dynamical systems, it is expected that the principle should control also low dimensional dynamical systems exhibiting continuous or discontinuous bifurcations from fixed points to limit cycles. Here we present numerical evidence that the dynamics of a single neuron can be controlled in the vicinity of its bifurcation point. The approach is tested in two models: a 2D generic excitable map and the paradigmatic FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model. The results show that in both cases, the system can be self-tuned to its bifurcation point by modifying the control parameter according to the first coefficient of the autocorrelation function.

The role of waning immunity in basic epidemic models on networks has been undervalued while being noticeable fundamental for real epidemic outbreaks. One central question is which mean-field approach is more accurate in describing the epidemic dynamics. We tackled this problem considering the susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible (SIRS) epidemic model on networks. Two pairwise mean-field theories, one based on recurrent dynamical message-passing (rDMP) and the other on the pair quenched mean-field theory (PQMF), are compared with extensive stochastic simulations on large networks of different levels of heterogeneity. For waning immunity times longer than or comparable with the recovering time, rDMP outperforms PQMF theory on power-law networks with degree distribution $P(k) \sim k^{-\gamma}$. In particular, for $\gamma > 3$, the epidemic threshold observed in simulations is finite, in qualitative agreement with rDMP, while PQMF leads to an asymptotically null threshold. The critical epidemic prevalence for $\gamma > 3$ is localized in a finite set of vertices in the case of the PQMF theory. In contrast, the localization happens in a subextensive fraction of the network in rDMP theory. Simulations, however, indicate that localization patterns of the actual epidemic lay between the two mean-field theories, and improved theoretical approaches are necessary to understanding the SIRS dynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The adoption of prophylaxis attitudes, such as social isolation and use of face masks, to mitigate epidemic outbreaks strongly depends on the support of the population. In this work, we investigate a susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) epidemic model, in which the epidemiological perception of the environment can adapt the behavior of susceptible individuals towards preventive behavior. {Two compartments of susceptible individuals are considered, to distinguish those that adopt or not prophylaxis attitudes.} Two rules, depending on local and global epidemic prevalence, for the spread of the epidemic in heterogeneous networks are investigated. We present the results of both heterogeneous mean-field theory and stochastic simulations. The former performs well for the global rule, but misses relevant outcomes of simulations in the local case. In simulations, only local awareness can significantly raise the epidemic threshold, delay the peak of prevalence, and reduce the outbreak size. Interestingly, we observed that increasing the local perception rate leads to less individuals recruited to the protected state, but still enhances the effectiveness in mitigating the outbreak. We also report that network heterogeneity substantially reduces the efficacy of local awareness mechanisms since hubs, the super-spreaders of the SIR dynamics, are little responsive to epidemic environments in the low epidemic prevalence regime. A simple model to study cooperation is the two-species symbiotic contact process (2SCP), in which two different species spread on a graph and interact by a reduced death rate if both occupy the same vertex, representing a symbiotic interaction. The 2SCP is known to exhibit a complex behavior with a rich phase diagram, including continuous and discontinuous transitions between the active phase and extinction. In this work, we advance the understanding of the phase transition of the 2SCP on uncorrelated networks by developing a heterogeneous mean-field (HMF) theory, in which the heterogeneity of contacts is explicitly reckoned. The HMF theory for networks with power-law degree distributions shows that the region of bistability (active and inactive phases) in the phase diagram shrinks as the heterogeneity level is increased by reducing the degree exponent. Finite-size analysis reveals a complex behavior where a pseudo discontinuous transition at a finite-size can be converted into a continuous one in the thermodynamic limit, depending on degree exponent and symbiotic coupling. Nowcasting and forecasting of epidemic spreading rely on incidence series of reported cases to derive the fundamental epidemiological parameters for a given pathogen. Two relevant drawbacks for predictions are the unknown fractions of undocumented cases and levels of nonpharmacological interventions, which span highly heterogeneously across different places and times. We describe a simple data-driven approach using a compartmental model including asymptomatic and presymptomatic contagions that allows to estimate both the level of undocumented infections and the value of effective reproductive number R t from time series of reported cases, deaths, and epidemiological parameters. The method was applied to epidemic series for COVID-19 across different municipalities in Brazil allowing to estimate the heterogeneity level of under-reporting across different places. The reproductive number derived within the current framework is little sensitive to both diagnosis and infection rates during the asymptomatic states. Effective strategies of vaccine prioritization are essential to mitigate the impacts of severe infectious diseases. We investigate the role of infection fatality ratio (IFR) and social contact matrices on vaccination prioritization using a compartmental epidemic model fueled by real-world data of different diseases and countries. Our study confirms that massive and early vaccination is extremely effective to reduce the disease fatality if the contagion is mitigated, but the effectiveness is increasingly reduced as vaccination beginning delays in an uncontrolled epidemiological scenario. The optimal and least effective prioritization strategies depend non-linearly on epidemiological variables. Regions of the epidemiological parameter space, in which prioritizing the most vulnerable population is more effective than the most contagious individuals, depend strongly on the IFR age profile being, for example, substantially broader for COVID-19 in comparison with seasonal influenza. Epidemic processes on random graphs or networks are marked by localization of activity that can trap the dynamics into a metastable state, confined to a subextensive part of the network, before visiting an absorbing configuration. Quasistationary (QS) method is a technique to deal with absorbing states for finite sizes and has played a central role in the investigation of epidemic processes on heterogeneous networks where localization is a hallmark. The standard QS method possesses high computer and algorithmic complexity for large systems besides parameters whose choice are not systematic. However, simpler approaches, such as a reflecting boundary condition (RBC), are not able to capture the localization effects as the standard QS method does. In the present work, we propose a QS method that consists of reactivating nodes proportionally to the time they were active along the preceding simulation. The method is compared with the standard QS and RBC methods for the susceptible-infected-susceptible model on complex networks, which is a prototype of a dynamic process with strong and localization effects. We verified that the method performs as well the as standard QS in all investigated simulations, providing the same scaling exponents, epidemic thresholds, and localized phases, thus overcoming the limitations of other simpler approaches. We also report that the present method has significant reduction of the computer and algorithmic complexity than the standard QS methods. Human mobility, contact patterns, and their interplay are key aspects of our social behavior that shape the spread of infectious diseases across different regions. In the light of new evidence and data sets about these two elements, epidemic models should be refined to incorporate both the heterogeneity of human contacts and the complexity of mobility patterns. Here, we propose a theoretical framework that allows accommodating these two aspects in the form of a set of Markovian equations. We validate these equations with extensive mechanistic simulations and derive analytically the epidemic threshold. The expression of this critical value allows us to evaluate its dependence on the specific demographic distribution, the structure of mobility flows, and the heterogeneity of contact patterns, thus shedding light on the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the epidemic detriment driven by recurrent mobility patterns reported in the literature., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Localization phenomena permeate many branches of physics playing a fundamental role on dynamical processes evolving on heterogeneous networks. These localization analyses are frequently grounded, for example, on eigenvectors of adjacency or non-backtracking matrices which emerge in theories of dynamic processes near to an active to inactive transition. We advance in this problem gauging nodal activity to quantify the localization in dynamical processes on networks whether they are near to a transition or not. The method is generic and applicable to theory, stochastic simulations, and real data. We investigate spreading processes on a wide spectrum of networks, both analytically and numerically, showing that nodal activity can present complex patterns depending on the network structure. Using annealed networks we show that a localized state at the transition and an endemic phase just above it are not incompatible features of a spreading process. We also report that epidemic prevalence near to the transition is determined by the delocalized component of the network even when the analysis of the inverse participation ratio indicates a localized activity. Also, dynamical processes with distinct critical exponents can be described by the same localization pattern. Turning to quenched networks, a more complex picture, depending on the type of activation and on the range of degree exponent, is observed and discussed. A central feature of an emerging infectious disease in a pandemic scenario is the spread through geographical scales and the impacts on different locations according to the adopted mitigation protocols. We investigated a stochastic epidemic model with the metapopulation approach in which patches represent municipalities. Contagion follows a stochastic compartmental model for municipalities; the latter, in turn, interact with each other through recurrent mobility. As a case of study, we consider the epidemic of COVID-19 in Brazil performing data-driven simulations. Properties of the simulated epidemic curves have very broad distributions across different geographical locations and scales, from states, passing through intermediate and immediate regions down to municipality levels. Correlations between delay of the epidemic outbreak and distance from the respective capital cities were predicted to be strong in several states and weak in others, signaling influences of multiple epidemic foci propagating towards the inland cities. Responses of different regions to a same mitigation protocol can vary enormously implying that the policies of combating the epidemics must be engineered according to the region' specificity but integrated with the overall situation. Real series of reported cases confirm the qualitative scenarios predicted in simulations. Far beyond its relevance for commercial and political marketings, opinion formation and decision making processes are central for representative democracy, government functioning, and state organization. In the present report, a stochastic agent-based model is investigated. The model assumes that bounded confidence and homophily mechanisms drive both opinion dynamics and social network evolution through either rewiring or breakage of social contacts. In addition to the classical transition from global consensus to opinion polarization, our main findings are (i) a cascade of fragmentation of the social network into echo chambers (modules) holding distinct opinions and rupture of the bridges interconnecting these modules as the tolerance for opinion differences increases. There are multiple surviving opinions associated to these modules within which consensus is formed; and (ii) the adaptive social network exhibits a hysteresis-like behavior characterized by irreversible changes in its topology as the opinion tolerance cycles from radicalization towards consensus and backward to radicalization., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Reckoning of pairwise dynamical correlations significantly improves the accuracy of mean-field theories and plays an important role in the investigation of dynamical processes on complex networks. In this work, we perform a nonperturbative numerical analysis of the quenched mean-field theory (QMF) and the inclusion of dynamical correlations by means of the pair quenched mean-field (PQMF) theory for the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model on synthetic and real networks. We show that the PQMF considerably outperforms the standard QMF on synthetic networks of distinct levels of heterogeneity and degree correlations, providing extremely accurate predictions when the system is not too close to the epidemic threshold while the QMF theory deviates substantially from simulations for networks with a degree exponent $\gamma>2.5$. The scenario for real networks is more complicated, still with PQMF significantly outperforming the QMF theory. However, despite of high accuracy for most investigated networks, in a few cases PQMF deviations from simulations are not negligible. We found correlations between accuracy and average shortest path while other basic networks metrics seem to be uncorrelated with the theory accuracy. Our results show the viability of the PQMF theory to investigate the high prevalence regimes of recurrent-state epidemic processes on networks, a regime of high applicability., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Optimal strategies for epidemic containment are focused on dismantling the contact network through effective immunization with minimal costs. However, network fragmentation is seldom accessible in practice and may present extreme side effects. In this work, we investigate the epidemic containment immunizing population fractions far below the percolation threshold. We report that moderate and weakly supervised immunizations can lead to finite epidemic thresholds of the susceptible-infected-susceptible model on scale-free networks by changing the nature of the transition from a specific-motif to a collectively driven process. Both pruning of efficient spreaders and increasing of their mutual separation are necessary for a collective activation. Fractions of immunized vertices needed to eradicate the epidemics which are much smaller than the percolation thresholds were observed for a broad spectrum of real networks considering targeted or acquaintance immunization strategies. The two-species symbiotic contact process (2SCP) is a stochastic process where each vertex of a graph may be vacant or host at most one individual of each species. Vertices with both species have a reduced death rate, representing a symbiotic interaction, while the dynamics evolves according to the standard (single species) contact process rules otherwise. We investigate the role of dynamical correlations on the 2SCP on homogeneous and heterogeneous networks using pairwise mean-field theory. This approach is compared with the ordinary one-site theory and stochastic simulations. We show that our theory significantly outperforms the one-site theory. In particular, the stationary state of the 2SCP model on random regular networks is very accurately reproduced by the pairwise mean-field, even for relatively small values of vertex degree, where expressive deviations of the standard mean-field are observed. The pairwise approach is also able to capture the transition points accurately for heterogeneous networks and provides rich phase diagrams with transitions not predicted by the one-site method. We present a comparison between stochastic simulations and mean-field theories for the epidemic threshold of the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model on correlated networks (both assortative and disassortative) with power-law degree distribution $P(k)\sim k^{-\gamma}$. We confirm the vanishing of the threshold regardless of the correlation pattern and the degree exponent $\gamma$. Thresholds determined numerically are compared with quenched mean-field (QMF) and pair quenched mean-field (PQMF) theories. Correlations do not change the overall picture: QMF and PQMF provide estimates that are asymptotically correct for large size for $\gamma<5/2$, while they only capture the vanishing of the threshold for $\gamma>5/2$, failing to reproduce quantitatively how this occurs. For a given size, PQMF is more accurate. We relate the variations in the accuracy of QMF and PQMF predictions with changes in the spectral properties (spectral gap and localization) of standard and modified adjacency matrices, which rule the epidemic prevalence near the transition point, depending on the theoretical framework. The role played by a kinetic barrier originated by out-of-plane step edge diffusion, introduced in [Leal \textit{et al.}, \href{https://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/23/29/292201}{J. Phys. Condens. Matter \textbf{23}, 292201 (2011)}], is investigated in the Wolf-Villain and Das Sarma-Tamborenea models with short range diffusion. Using large-scale simulations, we observed that this barrier is sufficient to produce growth instability, forming quasiregular mounds in one and two dimensions. The characteristic surface length saturates quickly indicating a uncorrelated growth of the 3d structures, which is also confirmed by a growth exponent $\beta=1/2$. Echo chambers in online social networks, in which users prefer to interact only with ideologically-aligned peers, are believed to facilitate misinformation spreading and contribute to radicalize political discourse. In this paper, we gauge the effects of echo chambers in information spreading phenomena over political communication networks. Mining 12 million Twitter messages, we reconstruct a network in which users interchange opinions related to the impeachment of the former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. We define a continuous {political position} parameter, independent of the network's structure, that allows to quantify the presence of echo chambers in the strongly connected component of the network, reflected in two well-separated communities of similar sizes with opposite views of the impeachment process. By means of simple spreading models, we show that the capability of users in propagating the content they produce, measured by the associated spreadability, strongly depends on their attitude. Users expressing pro-impeachment sentiments are capable to transmit information, on average, to a larger audience than users expressing anti-impeachment sentiments. Furthermore, the users' spreadability is correlated to the diversity, in terms of political position, of the audience reached. We report local roughness exponents, $\alpha_{\text{loc}}$, for three interface growth models in one dimension which are believed to belong the non-linear molecular-beam-epitaxy (nMBE) universality class represented by the Villain-Lais-Das Sarma (VLDS) stochastic equation. We applied an optimum detrended fluctuation analysis (ODFA) [Luis et al., Phys. Rev. E 95, 042801 (2017)] and compared the outcomes with standard detrending methods. We observe in all investigated models that ODFA outperforms the standard methods providing exponents in the narrow interval $\alpha_{\text{loc}}\in[0.96,0.98]$ consistent with renormalization group predictions for the VLDS equation. In particular, these exponent values are calculated for the Clarke-Vvdensky and Das Sarma-Tamborenea models characterized by very strong corrections to the scaling, for which large deviations of these values had been reported. Our results strongly support the absence of anomalous scaling in the nMBE universality class and the existence of corrections in the form $\alpha_{\text{loc}}=1-\epsilon$ of the one-loop renormalization group analysis of the VLDS equation.

We investigate a fermionic susceptible-infected-susceptible model with mobility of infected individuals on uncorrelated scale-free networks with power-law degree distributions $P (k) \sim k^{-\gamma}$ of exponents $2<\gamma<3$. Two diffusive processes with diffusion rate $D$ of an infected vertex are considered. In the \textit{standard diffusion}, one of the nearest-neighbors is chosen with equal chance while in the \textit{biased diffusion} this choice happens with probability proportional to the neighbor's degree. A non-monotonic dependence of the epidemic threshold on $D$ with an optimum diffusion rate $D_\ast$, for which the epidemic spreading is more efficient, is found for standard diffusion while monotonic decays are observed in the biased case. The epidemic thresholds go to zero as the network size is increased and the form that this happens depends on the diffusion rule and degree exponent. We analytically investigated the dynamics using quenched and heterogeneous mean-field theories. The former presents, in general, a better performance for standard and the latter for biased diffusion models, indicating different activation mechanisms of the epidemic phases that are rationalized in terms of hubs or max $k$-core subgraphs., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We investigate an off-lattice Eden model where the growth of new cells is performed with a probability dependent on the availability of resources coming externally towards the growing aggregate. Concentration of nutrients necessary for replication is assumed to be proportional to the voids connecting the replicating cells to the outer region, introducing therefore an nonlocal dependence on the replication rule. Our simulations point out that the Kadar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is a transient that can last for long periods in plentiful environments. For conditions of nutrient scarcity we observe a crossover from regular KPZ to unstable growth, passing by a transient consistent with the quenched KPZ class at the pinning transition. Our analysis sheds light on results reporting on the universality class of kinetic roughening in akin experiments of biological growth.

We analyze two alterations of the standard susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) dynamics that preserve the central properties of spontaneous healing and infection capacity of a vertex increasing unlimitedly with its degree. All models have the same epidemic thresholds in mean-field theories but depending on the network properties, simulations yield a dual scenario, in which the epidemic thresholds of the modified SIS models can be either dramatically altered or remain unchanged in comparison with the standard dynamics. For uncorrelated synthetic networks having a power-law degree distribution with exponent $\gamma<5/2$, the SIS dynamics are robust exhibiting essentially the same outcomes for all investigated models. A threshold in better agreement with the heterogeneous rather than quenched mean-field theory is observed in the modified dynamics for exponent $\gamma>5/2$. Differences are more remarkable for $\gamma>3$ where a finite threshold is found in the modified models in contrast with the vanishing threshold of the original one. This duality is elucidated in terms of epidemic lifespan on star graphs. We verify that the activation of the modified SIS models is triggered in the innermost component of the network given by a $k$-core decomposition for $\gamma<3$ while it happens only for $\gamma<5/2$ in the standard model. For $\gamma>3$, the activation in the modified dynamics is collective involving essentially the whole network while it is triggered by hubs in the standard SIS. The duality also appears in the finite-size scaling of the critical quantities where mean-field behaviors are observed for the modified, but not for the original dynamics. Our results feed the discussions about the most proper conceptions of epidemic models to describe real systems and the choices of the most suitable theoretical approaches to deal with these models., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Griffiths phases (GPs), generated by the heterogeneities on modular networks, have recently been suggested to provide a mechanism, rid of fine parameter tuning, to explain the critical behavior of complex systems. One conjectured requirement for systems with modular structures was that the network of modules must be hierarchically organized and possess finite dimension. We investigate the dynamical behavior of an activity spreading model, evolving on heterogeneous random networks with highly modular structure and organized non-hierarchically. We observe that loosely coupled modules act as effective rare-regions, slowing down the extinction of activation. As a consequence, we find extended control parameter regions with continuously changing dynamical exponents for single network realizations, preserved after finite size analyses, as in a real GP. The avalanche size distributions of spreading events exhibit robust power-law tails. Our findings relax the requirement of hierarchical organization of the modular structure, which can help to rationalize the criticality of modular systems in the framework of GPs., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Numerical simulation of continuous-time Markovian processes is an essential and widely applied tool in the investigation of epidemic spreading on complex networks. Due to the high heterogeneity of the connectivity structure through which epidemics is transmitted, efficient and accurate implementations of generic epidemic processes are not trivial and deviations from statistically exact prescriptions can lead to uncontrolled biases. Based on the Gillespie algorithm (GA), in which only steps that change the state are considered, we develop numerical recipes and describe their computer implementations for statistically exact and computationally efficient simulations of generic Markovian epidemic processes aiming at highly heterogeneous and large networks. The central point of the recipes investigated here is to include phantom processes, that do not change the states but do count for time increments. We compare the efficiencies for the susceptible-infected-susceptible, contact process and susceptible-infected-recovered models, that are particular cases of a generic model considered here. We numerically confirm that the simulation outcomes of the optimized algorithms are statistically indistinguishable from the original GA and can be several orders of magnitude more efficient., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We present an optimal detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and applied it to evaluate the local roughness exponent in non-equilibrium surface growth models with mounded morphology. Our method consists in analyzing the height fluctuations computing the shortest distance of each point of the profile to a detrending curved that fits the surface within the investigated interval. We compare the optimal DFA (ODFA) with both the standard DFA and nondetrended analysis. We validate the ODFA method considering a one-dimensional model in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class starting from a mounded initial condition. We applied the methods to the Clarke-Vvdensky (CV) model in $2+1$ dimensions with thermally activated surface diffusion and absence of step barriers. It is expected that this model belongs to the nonlinear Molecular Beam Epitaxy (nMBE) universality class. However, an explicit observation of the roughness exponent in agreement with the nMBE class was still missing. The effective roughness exponent obtained with ODFA agrees with the value expected for nMBE class whereas using the other methods it does not. We also characterized the transient anomalous scaling of the CV model and obtained that the corresponding exponent is in agreement with the value reported for other nMBE models with weaker corrections to the scaling., Comment: To appear in Physical Review E

A major hurdle in the simulation of the steady state of epidemic processes is that the system will unavoidably visit an absorbing, disease-free state at sufficiently long times due to the finite size of the networks where epidemics evolves. In the present work, we compare different quasistationary (QS) simulation methods where the absorbing states are suitably handled and the thermodynamical limit of the original dynamics can be achieved. We analyze the standard QS (SQS) method, where the sampling is constrained to active configurations, the reflecting boundary condition (RBC), where the dynamics returns to the pre-absorbing configuration, and hub reactivation (HR), where the most connected vertex of the network is reactivated after a visit to an absorbing state. We apply the methods to the contact process (CP) and susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) models on regular and scale free networks. The investigated methods yield the same epidemic threshold for both models. For CP, that undergoes a standard collective phase transition, the methods are equivalent. For SIS, whose phase transition is ruled by the hub mutual reactivation, the SQS and HR methods are able to capture localized epidemic phases while RBC is not. We also apply the auto-correlation time as a tool to characterize the phase transition and observe that this analysis provides the same finite-size scaling exponents for the critical relaxation time for the investigated methods. We investigate the origin of the scaling corrections in ballistic deposition models in high dimensions using the method proposed by Alves \textit{et al}. [Phys Rev. E \textbf{90}, 052405 (20014)] in $d=2+1$ dimensions, where the intrinsic width associated with the fluctuations of the height increments during the deposition processes is explicitly taken into account. In the present work, we show that this concept holds for $d=3+1$ and 4+1 dimensions. We have found that growth and roughness exponents and dimensionless cumulant ratios are in agreement with other models, presenting small finite-time corrections to the scaling, that in principle belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class in both $d=3+1$ and 4+1. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is a fundamental technique for the analysis of surfaces. In the present work, the interface statistics of surfaces scanned with a probe tip was analyzed for both \textit{in silico} and experimental systems that \textit{do not} belong to the prominent Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We show that height, local roughness and extremal height distributions of scanned surfaces quantitatively agree with the KPZ class in a range similar or better than recent experimental evidences of the KPZ class using SPM images. The underlying mechanism behind this artificial KPZ class is the finite size of the probe tip, which does not permit a full resolution of neither deep valleys or sloping borders of plateaus. The net result is a scanned profile laterally thicker and higher than the original one implying an excess growth, the major characteristic of the KPZ universality class. The actual universality class of self-affine scanned surfaces are expected at long times when the characteristic surface lengths become much larger than those of the probe tip but our finds can be of relevance to experiments where sufficiently long growth times cannot be easily achieved. We also propose that the KPZ signatures can be also elicited in mounded surfaces with high aspect ratio due to the interaction with the bulk of the probe tip. We provide numerical evidence for slow dynamics of the susceptible-infected-susceptible model evolving on finite-size random networks with power-law degree distributions. Extensive simulations were done by averaging the activity density over many realizations of networks. We investigated the effects of outliers in both highly fluctuating (natural cutoff) and non-fluctuating (hard cutoff) most connected vertices. Logarithmic and power-law decays in time were found for natural and hard cutoffs, respectively. This happens in extended regions of the control parameter space $\lambda_1<\lambda<\lambda_2$, suggesting Griffiths effects, induced by the topological inhomogeneities. Optimal fluctuation theory considering sample-to-sample fluctuations of the pseudo thresholds is presented to explain the observed slow dynamics. A quasistationary analysis shows that response functions remain bounded at $\lambda_2$. We argue these to be signals of a smeared transition. However, in the thermodynamic limit the Griffiths effects loose their relevancy and have a conventional critical point at $\lambda_c=0$. Since many real networks are composed by heterogeneous and weakly connected modules, the slow dynamics found in our analysis of independent and finite networks can play an important role for the deeper understanding of such systems., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We consider a general criterion to discern the nature of the threshold in epidemic models on scale-free (SF) networks. Comparing the epidemic lifespan of the nodes with largest degrees with the infection time between them, we propose a general dual scenario, in which the epidemic transition is either ruled by a hub activation process, leading to a null threshold in the thermodynamic limit, or given by a collective activation process, corresponding to a standard phase transition with a finite threshold. We validate the proposed criterion applying it to different epidemic models, with waning immunity or heterogeneous infection rates in both synthetic and real SF networks. We study absorbing-state phase transitions in two-dimensional Voronoi-Delaunay (VD) random lattices with quenched coordination disorder. Quenched randomness usually changes the criticality and destroys discontinuous transitions in low-dimensional nonequilibrium systems. We performed extensive simulations of the Ziff-Gulari-Barshad (ZGB) model, and verified that the VD disorder does not change the nature of its discontinuous transition. Our results corroborate recent findings of Barghatti and Vojta [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 113}, 120602 (2014)] stating the irrelevance of topological disorder in a class of random lattices that includes VD and raise the interesting possibility that disorder in nonequilibrium APT may, under certain conditions, be irrelevant for the phase coexistence. We study the ballistic deposition and the grain deposition models on two-dimensional substrates. Using the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) ansatz for height fluctuations, we show that the main contribution to the intrinsic width, which causes strong corrections to the scaling, comes from the fluctuations in the height increments along deposition events. Accounting for this correction in the scaling analysis, we obtained scaling exponents in excellent agreement with the KPZ class. We also propose a method to suppress these corrections, which consists in divide the surface in bins of size $\varepsilon$ and use only the maximal height inside each bin to do the statistics. Again, scaling exponents in remarkable agreement with the KPZ class were found. The binning method allowed the accurate determination of the height distributions of the ballistic models in both growth and steady state regimes, providing the universal underlying fluctuations foreseen for KPZ class in 2+1 dimensions. Our results provide complete and conclusive evidences that the ballistic model belongs to the KPZ universality class in $2+1$ dimensions. We show that the theoretical machinery developed for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class in low dimensions are obeyed by the restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) model for substrates with dimensions up to $d=6$. Analyzing different restriction conditions, we show that height distributions of the interface are universal for all investigated dimensions. It means that fluctuations are not negligible and, consequently, the system is still below the upper critical dimension at $d=6$. The epidemic threshold of the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) dynamics on random networks having a power law degree distribution with exponent $\gamma>3$ has been investigated using different mean-field approaches, which predict different outcomes. We performed extensive simulations in the quasistationary state for a comparison with these mean-field theories. We observed concomitant multiple transitions in individual networks presenting large gaps in the degree distribution and the obtained multiple epidemic thresholds are well described by different mean-field theories. We observed that the transitions involving thresholds which vanishes at the thermodynamic limit involve localized states, in which a vanishing fraction of the network effectively contribute to epidemic activity, whereas an endemic state, with a finite density of infected vertices, occurs at a finite threshold. Recent works have shown that the contact process running on the top of highly heterogeneous random networks is described by the heterogeneous mean-field theory. However, some important aspects as the transition point and strong corrections to the finite-size scaling observed in simulations are not quantitatively reproduced in this theory. We develop a heterogeneous pair approximation, the simplest mean-field approach that takes into account dynamical correlations, for the contact process. The transition points obtained in this theory are in very good agreement with simulations. The proximity with a simple homogeneous pair-approximation is elicited showing that the transition point in successive homogeneous cluster approximations moves away from the simulation results. We show that the critical exponents of the heterogeneous pair-approximation in the infinite-size limit are the same as those of the one-vertex theory. However, excellent matches with simulations, for a wide range of network sizes, is obtained when sub-leading finite-size corrections given by the new theory are explicitly taken into account. The present approach can be suited to dynamical processes on networks in general providing a profitable strategy to analytically assess fine-tuning theoretical corrections.

We investigate the role of clustering on the critical behavior of the contact process (CP) on small-world networks using the Watts-Strogatz (WS) network model with an edge rewiring probability p. The critical point is well predicted by a homogeneous cluster-approximation for the limit of vanishing clustering (p close to 1). The critical exponents and dimensionless moment ratios of the CP are in agreement with those predicted by the mean-field theory for any p > 0. This independence on the network clustering shows that the small-world property is a sufficient condition for the mean-field theory to correctly predict the universality of the model. Moreover, we compare the CP dynamics on WS networks with rewiring probability p = 1 and random regular networks and show that the weak heterogeneity of the WS network slightly changes the critical point but does not alter other critical quantities of the model., Comment: 07 pages, 06 figures

We present a quenched mean-field (QMF) theory for the dynamics of the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model on complex networks where dynamical correlations between connected vertices are taken into account by means of a pair approximation. We present analytical expressions of the epidemic thresholds in the star and wheel graphs and in random regular networks. For random networks with a power law degree distribution, the thresholds are numerically determined via an eigenvalue problem. The pair and one-vertex QMF theories yield the same scaling for the thresholds as functions of the network size. However, comparisons with quasi-stationary simulations of the SIS dynamics on large networks show that the former is quantitatively much more accurate than the latter. Our results demonstrate the central role played by dynamical correlations on the epidemic spreading and introduce an efficient way to theoretically access the thresholds of very large networks that can be extended to dynamical processes in general., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the effects of local population structure in reaction-diffusion processes representing a contact process (CP) on metapopulations represented as complex networks. Considering a model in which the nodes of a large scale network represent local populations defined in terms of a homogeneous graph, we show by means of extensive numerical simulations that the critical properties of the reaction-diffusion system are independent of the local population structure, even when this one is given by a ordered linear chain. This independence is confirmed by the perfect matching between numerical critical exponents and the results from a heterogeneous mean field theory suited, in principle, to describe situations of local homogeneous mixing. The analysis of several variations of the reaction-diffusion process allow to conclude the independence from population structure of the critical properties of CP-like models on metapopulations, and thus of the universality of the reaction-diffusion description of this kind of models., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Oncolytic virotherapy - the use of viruses that specifically kill tumor cells - is an innovative and highly promising route for treating cancer. However, its therapeutic outcomes are mainly impaired by the host immune response to the viral infection. In the present work, we propose a multiscale mathematical model to study how the immune response interferes with the viral oncolytic activity. The model assumes that cytotoxic T cells can induce apoptosis in infected cancer cells and that free viruses can be inactivated by neutralizing antibodies or cleared at a constant rate by the innate immune response. Our simulations suggest that reprogramming the immune microenvironment in tumors could substantially enhance the oncolytic virotherapy in immune-competent hosts. Viable routes to such reprogramming are either in situ virus-mediated impairing of CD$8^+$ T cells motility or blockade of B and T lymphocytes recruitment. We present a comprehensive numerical investigation of non-universal parameters and corrections related to interface fluctuations of models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, in d=1+1, for both flat and curved geometries. We analyzed two classes of models. In the isotropic models the non-universal parameters are uniform along the surface, whereas in the anisotropic growth they vary. In the latter case, that produces curved surfaces, the statistics must be computed independently along fixed directions. The ansatz h = v t + (\Gamma t)^{1/3} \chi + \eta, where \chi is a Tracy-Widom (geometry-dependent) distribution and \eta is a time-independent correction, is probed. Our numerical analysis shows that the non-universal parameter \Gamma determined through the first cumulant leads to a very good accordance with the extended KPZ ansatz for all investigated models in contrast with the estimates of \Gamma obtained from higher order cumulants that indicate a violation of the generalized ansatz for some of the studied models. We associate the discrepancies to corrections of unknown nature, which hampers an accurate estimation of \Gamma at finite times. The discrepancies in \Gamma via different approaches are relatively small but sufficient to modify the scaling law t^{-1/3} that characterize the finite-time corrections due to \eta. Among the investigated models, we have revisited an off-lattice Eden model that supposedly disobeyed the shift in the mean scaling as t^{-1/3} and showed that there is a crossover to the expected regime. We have found model-dependent (non-universal) corrections for cumulants of order n > 1. The dynamical regimes of models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class are investigated in d=2+1 by extensive simulations considering flat and curved geometries. Geometry-dependent universal distributions, different from their Tracy-Widom counterpart in one-dimension, were found. Distributions exhibit finite-time corrections hallmarked by a shift in the mean decaying as t^-\beta, where \beta is the growth exponent. Our results support a generalization of the ansatz h = v t + (\Gamma t)^\beta \chi + \eta + \zeta t^-\beta to higher dimensions, where v, \Gamma, \zeta and \eta are non-universal quantities whereas \beta and \chi are universal and the last one depends on the surface geometry. Generalized Gumbel distributions provide very good fits of the distributions in at least four orders of magnitude around the peak, which can be used for comparisons with experiments. We instigate the properties of the threshold contact process (TCP), a process showing an absorbing-state phase transition with infinitely many absorbing states, on random complex networks. The finite size scaling exponents characterizing the transition are obtained in a heterogeneous mean field (HMF) approximation and compared with extensive simulations, particularly in the case of heterogeneous scale-free networks. We observe that the TCP exhibits the same critical properties as the contact process (CP), which undergoes an absorbing-state phase transition to a single absorbing state. The accordance among the critical exponents of different models and networks leads to conjecture that the critical behavior of the contact process in a HMF theory is a universal feature of absorbing state phase transitions in complex networks, depending only on the locality of the interactions and independent of the number of absorbing states. We present large-scale simulations of radial Eden clusters in three-dimensions and show that the growth exponent is in agreement with the value $\beta=0.242$ accepted for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Our results refute a recent assertion proposing that radial Eden growth in $d=3$ belongs to a universality class distinct from KPZ. We associate the previously reported discrepancy to a slow convergence to the asymptotic limit. Recent work has shown that different theoretical approaches to the dynamics of the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model for epidemics lead to qualitatively different estimates for the position of the epidemic threshold in networks. Here we present large-scale numerical simulations of the SIS dynamics on various types of networks, allowing the precise determination of the effective threshold for systems of finite size N. We compare quantitatively the numerical thresholds with theoretical predictions of the heterogeneous mean-field theory and of the quenched mean-field theory.
