Biochar is an effective material for enhancing soil ecosystem services. However, the specific impacts of biochar on microbial indicators, particularly in degraded soils, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar produced from cashew residues and sewage sludge, in a highly degraded soil, on microbial indicators. We analyzed soil chemical composition and microbial biomass C and N, enzyme activity, and stoichiometry. Cashew biochar increased soil respiration, indicating a higher availability of C to microorganisms compared to sewage sludge biochar and a better adaptation of soil microbial communities to C-rich organic material obtained from a native plant. Although the biochar differentially impacted microbial biomass C, both significantly increased N in the microbial biomass. Arylsulphatase activity did not respond to biochar application, while β-glucosidase, urease, and phosphatases showed significant changes with biochar treatments. Importantly, stoichiometry and vector analysis revealed that both types of biochar increased P limitation for soil microbes. Conversely, both biochar alleviated C and N limitations for the soil microbes. Thus, biochar applications in highly degraded soils should be supplemented with external P sources to maintain soil functions, mainly for cashew residues. Our results provide evidence that biochar can restore soil biological properties and enhance the availability of C and N to microorganisms. The urgent need for a simple and cost-effective thermochemical process to produce biochar has prompted this study. The aim was to develop a straightforward thermochemical process under O 2 -limited conditions for the production of coconut-based biochar (CBB) and to assess its ability to remove methylene blue (MB) through adsorption, comparing it with CBB produced by slow pyrolysis. CBBs were obtained under different atmospheric conditions (O 2 -limited, muffle furnace biochar (MFB); and inert, pyrolytic reactor biochar (PRB)), at 350, 500, and 700 °C, and for 30 and 90'. MFB and PRB were characterized using FTIR, RAMAN, SEM, EDS, and XRD analyses. Adsorption tests were conducted using 1.0 g L -1 of MFB and PRB, 10 mg L -1 of MB at 25 °C for 48 h. Characterization revealed that atmospheric conditions significantly influenced the yield and structural features of the materials. PRB exhibited higher yields and larger cavities than MFB, but quite similar spectral features. Adsorption tests indicated that MFB and PRB had q t values of 33.1 and 9.2 mg g- 1 , respectively, which were obtained at 700 °C and 90', and 700 °C and 30', respectively. The acute toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in Artemia salina is primarily attributed to the interaction between silver ions (Ag + ) and chitin, which constitutes the main structural component of the organism's cuticle. To investigate this interaction and gain a deeper understanding of its nature, geometric optimization calculations and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT0) analysis were performed. These calculations aimed to determine the most favorable conformation based on the binding energies of silver ions with chitin and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of their interaction. The results indicate an ionic effect dependent on the ion state, with simulations revealing that Ag 3+ ions have the potential to cause significant deformation of the chitin structure. Furthermore, this study evaluated the behavior of AgNPs using nauplii of A. salina instar I, assessing both mortality rates and cell damage. Toxicity of AgNPs was observed in A. salina at concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm within a timeframe of 24-48 h. The toxicity of AgNPs can be attributed to their interaction with the cuticle and subsequent modification of the chitin structure through the binding of ionic silver. Light microscopy (LM) analysis confirmed the presence of AgNPs in the cuticle, while confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) revealed cellular damage. In addition, this research offers new perspectives on the toxicity mechanism of AgNPs by introducing a novel model that explores the interaction of silver ions with the cuticle of A. salina. Although hydrochar and biochar have been used as soil conditioners, there is not a clear understanding of how their properties changes due to aging impacts their colloidal particles behavior on the soil system. From this premise, we produced hydrochar and biochar from the same feedstock (cashew bagasse) and aged with different chemical methods: (i) using hydrogen peroxide, (ii) a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids, and (iii) hot water. It was analyzed the effects of aging on the stability of the carbonaceous materials (CMs) colloids in aqueous medium with different ionic strength (single systems), as well as the stability of the natural-soil colloid when interacting with biochar and hydrochar colloids (binary systems). A chemical composition (C, H, N, and O content) change in CMs due to the chemically induced aging was observed along with minor structural modifications. Chemical aging could increase the amount of oxygen functional groups for both biochar and hydrochar, though in a different level depending on the methodology applied. In this sense, hydrochar was more susceptive to chemical oxidation than biochar. The effectiveness of chemical aging treatments for biochar increased in the order of water < acid < hydrogen peroxide, whereas for hydrochar the order was water < hydrogen peroxide < acid. While the increase in surface oxidation improved the biochar colloidal stability in water medium at different ionic strengths (single systems), the stability and critical coagulation concentration (CCC) slightly changed for hydrochar. Natural-soil clay (NSC) interactions with oxidized carbonaceous material colloids (binary systems) enhanced NSC stability, which is less likely to aggregate. Drylands are fragile environments that should be carefully managed to improve their quality and functions to achieve sustainable development. Their major problems involve low availability of nutrients and soil organic carbon content. Biochar effect on soil is a joint response of micro to nano sized biochar and soil characteristics. In this review, we attempt to carry out a critical analysis of biochar application to enhance dryland soil quality. Correlating the effects identified from its soil application, we explored the subjects that remains open in the literature. The relation of composition-structure-properties of biochar vary among pyrolysis parameters and biomass sources. Limitations in soil physical quality in drylands, such as low water-holding capacity, can be alleviated by applying biochar at a rate of 10 Mg ha -1 also resulting in beneficial effects on soil aggregation, improved soil porosity, and reduced bulk density. Biochar addition can contribute to the rehabilitation of saline soils, by releasing cations able to displaces sodium in the exchange complex. However, the recovery process of salt-affected soils might be accelerated by the association of biochar with another soil conditioners. This is a promising strategy especially considering the biochar alkalinity and variability in nutrients bioavailability to improve soil fertilization. Further, while higher biochar application rate (>20 Mg ha -1 ) might change soil C dynamics, a combination of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer can increase microbial biomass carbon in dryland systems. Other aspect of biochar soil application is the economic viability of scale-up production, which is mainly associate to pyrolysis process being biochar production the costliest stage. Nevertheless, the supplying of feedstock might also represent a great input on biochar final costs. Therefore, biochar-based technology is a big opportunity to improve fragile environments such as drylands, integrating sustainable technologies with regional development. Humic-like substances (HLS) are molecules extracted in an alkaline medium from different materials that have not been subjected to the natural process of humification that occurs in the soil. HLS have the potential to be used as organic fertilizers due to their ability to incorporate micronutrients such as Cu(II) and Co(II); in addition, they represent an alternative for the remediation of contaminated areas due to their high affinity for metals. HLS can be extracted from hydrochar (HC) but only with low yields of approximately 5%. Therefore, the present study aimed to increase the amount of HLS extracted from the HC produced from byproducts of the sugarcane industry through the oxidation of HC with HNO 3 . HLS extracted from oxidized and unoxidized HC were characterized by CHNS analysis and 13 C CPMAS NMR. The interaction between HLS and Cu(II) was studied by molecular fluorescence quenching (EEM-PARAFAC) and applying the Ryan and Weber complexation model. The oxidation of HC with HNO 3 allowed high yields of extracted HLS of above 80%. The oxidation carried out with 30% HNO 3 for 2 h showed the best result, since the HLS 30%(2h) were extracted with a very high yield (88.3%) in a short period of time. Oxidation promoted a decrease in HLS aromaticity and an increase in oxygen and nitrogen groups. HLS showed high affinity for Cu(II), as evidenced by the high logK values (between 5.5 and 5.9). HLS extracted from oxidized HCs showed higher complexation capacity due to the greater incorporation of the oxygenated groups promoted by oxidation, which are fundamental during the interaction with metallic cations. Calotropis procera cysteine peptidases (CpCPs) have presented several potential biotechnological applications. Here, these enzymes were immobilized on glyoxyl-agarose (glyoxyl-CpCPs) with yields of 90-95 % and the recovered activities ranged from 10 % to 15 %, according to enzyme loadings (5, 10, 20, 40, and 50 mgBSAeq/g). Spectrophotometric assays and SDS-PAGE showed that the casein hydrolysis by glyoxyl-CpCPs was similar to soluble CpCPs. In addition, glyoxyl-CpCPs exhibited similar ratio of milk-clotting activity to proteolytic activity in comparison with soluble CpCPs and chymosin. Even after being stored for six months at 8 °C, the residual proteolytic activity of glyoxyl-CpCPs remained close to 100 %. Atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques showed that the process of casein micelle aggregation after treatment with glyoxyl-CpCPs was very similar to its soluble form and chymosin. Titanate nanotubes were synthesized and subjected to an ion exchange reaction with erbium salt aqueous solution to obtain titanate nanotubes exchanged with erbium (3+) ions. In order to evaluate the effects of the thermal treatment atmosphere on the structural and optical properties of erbium titanate nanotubes, we subjected them to heat treatment in air and argon atmospheres. For comparison, titanate nanotubes were also treated in the same conditions. A complete structural and optical characterizations of the samples was performed. The characterizations evidenced the preservation of the morphology with the presence of phases of erbium oxides decorating the surface of the nanotubes. Variations in the dimensions of the samples (diameter and interlamellar space) were promoted by the replacement of Na + by Er 3+ and the thermal treatment in different atmospheres. In addition, the optical properties were investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results revealed that the band gap of the samples depends on the variation of diameter and sodium content caused by ion exchange and thermal treatment. Furthermore, the luminescence strongly depended on vacancies, evidenced mainly by the calcined erbium titanate nanotubes in argon atmosphere. The presence of these vacancies was confirmed by the determination of Urbach energy. The results suggest the use of thermal treated erbium titanate nanotubes in argon atmosphere in optoelectronics and photonics applications, such as photoluminescent devices, displays, and lasers.

This work reports the functionalization of sodium titanate nanotubes with amine groups obtained from the reaction of titanate nanotubes with [3-(2-Aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane, NaTiNT-2NH, and 3-[2-(2-Aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane, NaTiNT-3NH. It was verified that the crystalline and morphological structures of NaTiNT were preserved after the functionalization, spectroscopies showed that aminosilane interacted covalently with the surface of NaTiNT, and the incorporation of the aminosilane groups on the surface of NaTiNT can be confirmed. The adsorbent matrices NaTiNT-2NH and NaTiNT-3NH were used to remove the anionic dye from remazol blue R (RB) in aqueous medium, and the highest adsorption capacity was around 365.84 mg g-1 (NaTiNT-2NH) and 440.70 mg g-1 (NaTiNT-3NH) in the range of pH 5.0 to 10.0 and the equilibrium time was reached in 210 min (NaTiNT-2NH) and 270 min (NaTiNT-3NH). Furthermore, the Elovich model, which reports the adsorption in heterogeneous sites and with different activation energies in the chemisorption process, was the most appropriate to describe the adsorption kinetics. Thus, these adsorbent matrices can be used as an alternative potential for dye removal RB in aqueous solution.

Described is the enhancement of fluorescence intensity due to the interaction of a humic-like substance (HLS 1%) extracted from process water (PW) and Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. Using Canonical Polyadic/Parallel Factor Analysis (CP/PARAFAC), two main components were seen that contributed to fluorescence, the first one increased it and the second one kept it constant in both static and dynamic fluorescence studies. Two-dimensional FTIR analysis indicated that the interaction of HLS 1% and Cd(II) ions occurred in the following order of affinity with the groups: C-O bonds in polysaccharides > C-O bonds in carboxylic acid. The results obtained suggest that the increase in fluorescence intensity and lifetime suggest a photoinduced charge transfer (PCT) between Cd(II) ions and carboxylic acid groups present in HLS 1%., (© 2022. Silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) toxicity is related to nanoparticle interaction with the cell wall of microorganisms and plants. This interaction alters cell wall conformation with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cell. With the increase of ROS in the cell, the dissolution of zero silver (Ag0) to ionic silver (Ag+) occurs, which is a strong oxidant agent to the cellular wall. AgNP interaction was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on Lactuca sativa roots, and the mechanism of passage through the outer cell wall (OCW) was also proposed. The results suggest that Ag+ binds to the hydroxyls (OH) present in the cellulose structure, thus causing the breakdown of the hydrogen bonds. Changes in cell wall structure facilitate the passage of AgNPs, reaching the plasma membrane. According to the literature, silver nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15nm are transported across the membrane into the cells by caveolines. This work describes the interaction between AgNPs and the cell wall and proposes a transport model through the outer cell wall.

Sugarcane bagasse, vinasse and a mixture of sugarcane bagasse and vinasse were hydrothermally carbonized (HTC), with and without the addition of phosphoric acid, in order to propose new applications of sucroenergetic industry by-products on soil. Detailed information on the composition and properties of hydrochars has been obtained through elemental composition, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and, thermochemolysis GC-MS. The soluble acidic fraction from the hydrochar samples were applied to maize seeds to evaluate the agronomic potential as biostimulants and relate the molecular features with maize seed germination. The HTC treatment converted polysaccharide-based biomasses into hydrochars with hydrophobic characteristics (C-Aryl and C-Akyl). Furthermore, the addition of phosphoric acid further increased the overall hydrophobicity and shifted the thermal degradation of the hydrochars to higher temperatures. Biomass influenced the hydrochars that formed, in which the molecular features of sugarcane bagasse determined the formation of more polar hydrochar, due to the preservation of lignin and phenolic components. Meanwhile, the HTC of vinasse resulted in a more hydrophobic product with an enrichment of condensed and recalcitrant organic fractions. The germination assay showed that polar structures of bagasse may play a role in improving the maize seeds germination rate (increase of ~11%), while the hydrophobic domains showed negative effects. Hydrochar is a carbon-based material that can be used as soil amendment. Since the physical-chemical properties of hydrochar are mainly assigned to process parameters, we aimed at evaluating the organic fraction of different hydrochars through 13 C-NMR and off-line TMAH-GC/MS. Four hydrochars produced with sugarcane bagasse, vinasse and sulfuric or phosphoric acids were analyzed to elucidate the main molecular features. Germination and initial growth of maize seedlings were assessed using hydrochar water-soluble fraction to evaluate their potential use as growth promoters. The hydrochars prepared with phosphoric acid showed larger amounts of bioavailable lignin-derived structures. Although no differences were shown about the percentage of maize seeds germination, the hydrochar produced with phosphoric acid promoted a better seedling growth. For this sample, the greatest relative percentage of benzene derivatives and phenolic compounds were associated to hormone-like effects, responsible for stimulating shoot and root elongation. The reactions parameters proved to be determinant for the organic composition of hydrochar, exerting a strict influence on molecular features and plant growth response.

Fulvic acids (FA) are one of the components of humic substances and play an important role in the interaction with metallic species and, consequently, the bioavailability, distribution and toxicity of metals. However, only a few studies have investigated these FA properties in specific environment, such as anthropogenic soils. Therefore, knowledge about FA molecular composition as well as the FA-metal interaction is essential to predict their behavior in the soil. For this reason, the aim of this study was to investigate the molecular composition of FA extracted from two sites in an anthropogenic soil (Terra Mulata), from the Amazon region, as well as their interactions with Cu(II) ions as a model. Results from 13 C NMR, infrared and elemental analysis showed that these FA are composed mostly by alkyl structures and oxygen-functional groups, e.g., hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl. The interaction with Cu(II) ions was evaluated by fluorescence quenching, in which the FA showed both high quantity of complexing sites per gram of carbon and good affinity to interact with the metal when compared with other soil FA. The results showed that the complexation capacity was highly correlated by the content of functional groups, while the binding affinity was largely influenced by structural factors. In addition, through the lifetime decay given by time-resolved fluorescence, it was concluded that static quenching took place in FA and Cu(II) interaction with the formation of a non-fluorescent ground-state complex. Therefore, this fraction of soil organic matter will fully participate in complexation reactions, thereby influencing the mobility and bioavailability of metal in soils. Organic matter plays many roles in the soil ecosystem. One property of the substance concerns the metal complexation and interaction with organic contaminants. In this sense, the humic substances (HS), a heterogeneous mixture of compounds, naturally derived from degradation of biomass, have been widely studied in environmental sciences. Recent advances showed a new way to produce humic-like substances (HLS) through hydrothermal carbonization of biomass. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the HLS of hydrochars, produced by using a mixture of sugarcane bagasse and vinasse with sulfuric acid added (1 and 4% v/v), and to assess their interactions with metal ions, (Fe(III), Al(III), Cu(II) and Co(II)) using EEM-PARAFAC and a two-dimensional FTIR correlation analysis. The results were compared to the humic substances extracted from the Amazonian Anthrosol, as a model of anthropogenic organic matter. NMR analysis showed that humic-like extracts from hydrochar are mainly hydrophobic, while the soil has a greater contribution of polar moieties. The HLS and HS showed similar complexation capacities for Fe(III), Al(III) and Cu(II) assays. For Co(II) HLS exhibited larger affinities than HS. Two-dimensional correlation analysis FTIR showed that chemical groups may undergo conformational alteration with metal additions to achieve more stable arrangements (higher stability constant). Nano-heterostructures of titanate nanotubes were synthesized and they revealed a complex structure with the formation of TiO 2 (anatase), CeO 2 , Ag 2 O and metallic silver nanoparticles on the outer walls and intercalation of Ce 4+ and Ag + into the interlayer spaces of the nanotubes by microwave-assisted hydrothermal process and subjected to ion exchange reactions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported silver and cerium co-exchanged titanate nanotubes for bio-applications. The co-ion exchange processes preserved the original tubular structure of titanate nanotubes with significant changes of the superficial as well as interlamellar environment. This study opens up possibility of synthesizing complex, functional nano-heterostructure with the scope of modification of the final structure, especially the amount and oxidation state of the intercalated cation (Ce 4+ , Ce 3+ and Ag + ) as well as the quantity and variety of the decorating nanoparticles (CeO 2 , Ag 2 O or metallic Ag). The interplay of which, in turn, can lead to important biological properties and applications, owing to their ion-liberation capacity. Humic acids (HA) play an important role in the distribution, toxicity, and bioavailability of metals in the environment. Humic-like acids (HLA) that simulate geochemical processes can be prepared by NaOH aqueous extraction from hydrochars produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). HLA can exhibit properties such as those found in HA from soils, which are known for their ability to interact with inorganic and organic compounds. The molecular characteristics of HLA and HA help to explain the relationship between their molecular features and their interaction with metallic species. The aim of this study is to assess the molecular features of HA extracted from Terra Mulata (TM) and HLA from hydrochars as well as their interaction with metals by using Cu(II) ions as a model. The results from 13 C NMR, elemental analysis, FTIR, and UV-Vis showed that HA are composed mostly of aromatic structures and oxygenated functional groups, whereas HLA showed a mutual contribution of aromatic and aliphatic structures as main constituents. The interactions of HA and HLA with Cu(II) ions were evaluated through fluorescence quenching, in which the density of complexing sites per gram of carbon for interaction was higher for HLA than for HA. Furthermore, the HLA showed similar values for stability constants, and higher than those found for other types of HA in the literature. In addition, the average lifetime in both humic extracts appeared to be independent of the copper addition, indicating that the main mechanism of interaction was static quenching with a non-fluorescent ground-state complex formation. Several approaches to the rehabilitation of agrammatism use implicit and explicit learning methods., Objective: To verify the effect of adapted Mapping Therapy and ORLA methods (explicit versus implicit learning) on the oral and written production in spontaneous language among agrammatic patients with Broca's aphasia., Methods: Six individuals were submitted to Mapping Therapy and ORLA (Oral Reading for Language in Aphasia) treatments. Samples of oral and written production from a picture description task were compared pre and post-treatment., Results: In Mapping Therapy, the patients presented better performance after the training for the variables related to written production: number of words, nouns, verbs, closed-class words, and number of complete sentences. Regarding oral output, the patients had similar performance before and after the therapeutic process. In ORLA, the patients presented a significant difference before and after the therapeutic process in the variables related to oral production, increasing the number of words, number of verbs, and speech rate. There was no difference in pre and post-treatment performance in written production., Conclusion: Both implicit and explicit learning can be used in the treatment of agrammatism. Inspired by the presence of anthropogenic organic matter in highly fertile Amazonian Dark Earth (ADE), which is attributed to the transformation of organic matter over thousands of years, we explored hydrothermal carbonization as an alternative for humic-like substances (HLS) production. Hydrothermal carbonization of sugarcane industry byproducts (bagasse and vinasse) in the presence and absence of H 3 PO 4 afforded HLS, which were isolated and compared with humic substances (HS) isolated from ADE in terms of molecular composition and maize seed germination activity. HLS isolated from sugarcane bagasse hydrochar produced in the presence or absence of H 3 PO 4 comprised both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, differing from other HLS mainly in terms of phenolic content, while HLS isolated from vinasse hydrochar featured hydrophobic structures mainly comprising aliphatic moieties. Compared to that of HLS, the structure of soil-derived HS reflected an increased contribution of fresh organic matter input and, hence, featured a higher content of O-alkyl moieties. HLS derived from lignocellulosic biomass were rich in phenolics and promoted maize seed germination more effectively than HLS comprising alkyl moieties. Thus, HLS isolated from bagasse hydrochar had the highest bioactivity, as the presence of amphiphilic moieties therein seemed to facilitate the release of bioactive molecules from supramolecular structures and stimulate seed germination. Based on the above results, the hydrothermal carbonization of lignocellulosic biomass was concluded to be a viable method of producing amphiphilic HLS for use as plant growth promoters., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. To counter the undesired colloidal destabilization of nanoparticles in biologically-compatible media of high ionic strength (i.e. NaCl, phosphate buffer), polymers can be added to nanoparticle suspensions that will be used in biomedical applications. In these suspensions, polymers can promote high colloidal stability by manifestation of steric and/or depletion forces. However, little is known about the influence of these polymers on the interactions between nanoparticles and the biological components of the organism, such as proteins and cells. In this work, it was shown that the addition of the polymers (i) Pluronic-F127 (PF127), (ii) polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights - 1.5, 12 and 35 kDa - and (iii) the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) on colloidal silica nanoparticles (CSNPs; 135 nm) dispersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) largely alter their colloidal stability through different mechanisms. Although all polymers were adsorbed on the CSNP surface, BSA maintained the CSNP dispersion in the medium by electrosteric stabilization mechanisms, while PEG and PF127 led to the occurrence of depletion forces between the particles. In addition, it was found that the interactions between polymers and CSNPs did not prevent proteins to access the nanoparticles' surface and have minimal effect on the formation of the protein corona when they were incubated in human blood plasma. On the other hand, BSA had a greater effect on the CSNP protein corona profile compared to other polymers (PEG and PF127). Together, these results confirm that biocompatible polymers PEG and PF127 can be used as colloidal stabilizing agents for nanoparticles since they preserve the accessibility of biomolecules to the nanoparticle surface, and they have little effect on the protein corona composition., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. In recent years, electrochemical energy devices, i.e. batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, and supercapacitors, have attracted considerable attention of scientific community. The architecture of active materials plays a crucial role for improving supercapacitors performance. Herein, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanofibers (1D) have been synthesized by electrospinning process and used as a backbone to manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets (2D) growth through hydrothermal method. This strategy allows the obtaining of 1D/2D heterostructure architecture, which has demonstrated superior electrochemical performance in relation to pristine MnO 2 . The highest electrochemical performance is due to the synergic effect between the metal oxides, where TiO 2 nanofibers provide electrochemical stability for active MnO 2 phase. Thus, the designed TiO 2 @MnO 2 structure can reach maximum specific capacitance of 525 F·g -1 at a current density of 0.25 A·g -1 , and it demonstrates an excellent stability by retaining 81% of the initial capacitance with coulombic efficiency of 91%. Therefore, the novel architecture of TiO 2 @MnO 2 based on nanofibers and nanosheets exhibits superior electrochemical properties to be used in supercapacitor applications., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a thermochemical process carried out in an aqueous medium. It is capable of converting biomass into a solid, carbon-rich material (hydrochar), and producing a liquid phase (process water) which contains the unreactive feedstock and/or chemical intermediates from the carbonization reaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of process water generated by HTC from vinasse and sugarcane bagasse produced by sugarcane industry and to evaluate its toxicity to both marine (using Artemia salina as a model organism) and the terrestrial environment (through seed germination studies of maize, lettuce, and tomato). The experiments showed that concentrated process water completely inhibited germination of maize, lettuce, and tomato seeds. On the other hand, diluted process water was able to stimulate seedlings of maize and tomato and enhance root and shoot growth. For Artemia, the LC 50 indicated that the process water is practically non-toxic; however, morphological changes, especially damages to the digestive tube and antennas of Artemia, were observed for the concentration of 1000 mg C L -1 .

Hydrothermal carbonization transforms biomass into value-added material called hydrochar. The release of nutrients (P, N, Ca, Mg, and K) and organic carbon (TOC) from hydrochar in different extractive solutions was investigated in this study. Two sets of hydrochar were produced: (i) hydrochar prepared from sugarcane bagasse and vinasse mixture (BV-HC) and (ii) hydrochar prepared by the addition of H 3 PO 4 to this mixture (BVA-HC). Both hydrochar types released significative amounts of nutrient and organic carbon, mainly Ca (5.0 mg g -1 ) in the mixture (KCl, K 2 SO 4 , NaOH, 1:1:1) extractive solution and TOC (72.6 mg g -1 ) in the NaOH extractive solution, for BV-HC. Nutrient release was influenced by pH and ionic strength. The release of P, Ca, and Mg was affected by the presence of insoluble phosphate phases in BVA-HC. The release of nutrients P, N, Ca, Mg, and K and organic carbon demonstrated that hydrochar has potential for soil application purposes.

In this study, nutrients were immobilized on the hydrochars obtained by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of a vinasse and sugarcane bagasse mixture, in the presence of acid, base and salt additives at temperatures of 150, 190 and 230°C. The increase in temperature caused higher immobilization of Ca, Mg, K, N, Cu, Mn, Zn, B, P and Fe in all hydrochars produced. H 3 PO 4 and NaOH immobilized higher amounts of P, Mg and Mn, while Ca was immobilized in higher quantities in the presence of H 3 PO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . The addition of H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 was responsible for an increased immobilization of P, N, Ca, Mg and K. The immobilization of B, not present in the starting raw material, was possible with the addition of H 3 BO 3 . The results showed that it is possible to alter the reaction medium to immobilize nutrients on hydrochars produced from vinasse and sugarcane bagasse, for agricultural applications., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. We used here a scanning electron microscopy approach that detected backscattered electrons (BSEs) and X-rays (from ionization processes) along a large-field (LF) scan, applied on a Cretaceous fossil of a shrimp (area ∼280 mm(2)) from the Araripe Sedimentary Basin. High-definition LF images from BSEs and X-rays were essentially generated by assembling thousands of magnified images that covered the whole area of the fossil, thus unveiling morphological and compositional aspects at length scales from micrometers to centimeters. Morphological features of the shrimp such as pleopods, pereopods, and antennae located at near-surface layers (undetected by photography techniques) were unveiled in detail by LF BSE images and in calcium and phosphorus elemental maps (mineralized as hydroxyapatite). LF elemental maps for zinc and sulfur indicated a rare fossilization event observed for the first time in fossils from the Araripe Sedimentary Basin: the mineralization of zinc sulfide interfacing to hydroxyapatite in the fossil. Finally, a dimensional analysis of the phosphorus map led to an important finding: the existence of a fractal characteristic (D = 1.63) for the hydroxyapatite-matrix interface, a result of physical-geological events occurring with spatial scale invariance on the specimen, over millions of years.

The inclusion complexation of pyrimethamine in 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin has been investigated by 2D (1)H NMR, FTIR and UV/visible spectroscopy and also by molecular modelling methods (AM1, PM3, MM3). From the phase-solubility diagram a linear increase was observed in pyrimethamine aqueous solubility in the presence of 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, evidencing the formation of a soluble inclusion complex. According to the continuous variation method (Job's plot) applied to fluorescence measurements, a 1:1 stoichiometry has been proposed for the complex. Concerning the structure of the complex, a Cl-in orientation of pyrimethamine in the 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin cavity has been proposed from the theoretical calculations, being confirmed by two-dimensional (1)H NMR spectroscopy (ROESY). The thermal behaviour has also been studied, providing complementary evidences of complex formation.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) or hydrotalcite (HT)-like compounds with different kinds of metal ions (Mg-Al and Mg-Fe) in the brucite-like sheets were prepared and their adsorption properties were studied in the boron removal from aqueous solution under laboratory conditions. The hydrotalcites were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and were characterized by chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and specific surface area measurements (BET). The affinity of these materials with a mixture of B(OH)(3) and B(OH)(4)(-) was studied as a function of contact time, initial pH of the solutions, HT quantity and B concentration (adsorption isotherms). It was found that 120 min is enough time for the equilibrium state to be reached in boron adsorption. Boron removal was independent of the initial pH of the solutions because of the high buffering capacity of the LDHs. On the other hand, the adsorption capacity increases with increasing the adsorbent quantity. The adsorption isotherms, described by the Langmuir model, are of L-type, suggesting that B(OH)(4)(-) is adsorbed preferentially on HT-like materials. Besides, Mg-Al hydrotalcites showed higher adsorption capacity than Mg-Fe. We proposed that in Mg-Al hydrotalcites, the boron removal occurs by both adsorption on external surface and ion exchange, whereas for Mg-Fe it occurs only by surface adsorption. After treatment of a solution containing 5.2 mgBl(-1) with Mg-Al hydrotalcites the final boron concentration reached the recommended limit by WHO for drinking water (0.5 mgl(-1)).
