Background and Aims: There is ample theoretical and experimental evidence that angiosperms harbouring self-incompatibility (SI) systems are likely to respond to global changes in unique ways relative to taxa with other mating systems. In this paper, we present an updated database on the prevalence of SI systems across angiosperms and examine the relationship between the presence of SI and latitude, biomes, life-history traits and management conditions to evaluate the potential vulnerability of SI taxa to climate change and habitat disturbance., Methods: We performed literature searches to identify studies that employed controlled crosses, microscopic analyses and/or genetic data to classify taxa as having SI, self-compatibility (SC), partial self-compatibility (PSC) or self-sterility (SS). Where described, the site of the SI reaction and the presence of dimorphic versus monomorphic flowers were also recorded. We then combined this database on the distribution of mating systems with information about the life span, growth habit, management conditions and geographic distribution of taxa. Information about the geographic distribution of taxa was obtained from a manually curated version of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility database, and from vegetation surveys encompassing nine biomes. We employed multinomial logit regression to assess the relationship between mating system and life-history traits, management condition, latitude and latitude-squared using self-compatible taxa as the baseline. Additionally, we employed LOESS regression to examine the relationship between the probability of SI and latitude. Finally, by summarizing information at the family level, we plotted the distribution of SI systems across angiosperms, including information about the presence of SI or dioecy and the inferred reaction site of the SI system when known, as well as the proportion of taxa in a family for which information is available., Key Results: We obtained information about the SI status of 5686 hermaphroditic taxa, of which 55% exhibit SC and the remaining 45% harbour SI, SS or PSC. Highlights of the multinomial logit regression include that taxa with PSC have a greater odds of being short-lived (OR = 1.3) or long-lived (OR = 1.57) perennials relative to SC ones, and that SS/SI taxa (pooled) are less likely to be annuals (OR = 0.64) and more likely to be long-lived perennials (OR = 1.32). SS/SI taxa had a greater odds of being succulent (OR = 2.4) or a tree (OR = 2.05), and were less likely to be weeds (OR = 0.34). Further, we find a quadratic relationship between the probability of being self-incompatible with latitude: SI taxa were more common in the tropics, a finding that was further supported by the vegetation surveys, which showed fewer species with SS/SI in temperate and northern latitudes compared with Mediterranean and tropical biomes., Conclusions: We conclude that in the short-term habitat fragmentation, pollinator loss and temperature increases may negatively impact plants with SI systems, particularly long-lived perennial and woody species dominant in tropical forests. In the longer term, these and other global changes are likely to select for self-compatible or partially self-compatible taxa, which, due to the apparent importance of SI as a driver of plant diversification across the angiosperm tree of life, may globally influence plant species richness., (© The Author(s) 2024. All-inorganic perovskites exhibit outstanding light absorption properties in the visible range suitable for solar energy applications. We focus on the synthesis of CsPb 2 (Br,I) 5 using mechanochemical procedures. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) data are essential for determining the crystallographic evolution in the 295-753 K temperature range. From room temperature to 573 K, the crystal structure is refined in a two-dimensional (2D) tetragonal framework (space group: I 4/ mcm ) consisting of layers of face sharing [Pb(Br,I) 8 ] polyhedra. Above a transition temperature of T t = 630 and 621 K, identified from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves for CsPb 2 Br 5 and CsPb 2 Br 4 I, respectively, a cubic three-dimensional (3D) corner-sharing perovskite structure is identified, showing substantial Cs and (Br,I) deficiency. A more ionic character for Cs-halide versus Pb-halide is derived from the evolution of the anisotropic atomic displacements. An ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.35-0.18 W m -1 K -1 is related to the low Debye temperatures. From high-pressure SXRD studies, the change in B 0 can be attributed to a basic expansion of the unit-cell volume caused by the chemical pressure from iodine within the CsPb 2 Br 5 framework. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy revealed optical gaps of approximately 2.93 and 2.50 eV, respectively, which agrees with ab initio calculations.

Metal halide perovskites with a two-dimensional structure are utilized in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. High-crystallinity CsSn 2 Br 5 specimens have been synthesized via ball milling. Differential scanning calorimetry curves show melting at 553 K (endothermic) and recrystallization at 516 K (exothermic). Structural analysis using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, collected from 100 to 373 K, allows for the determination of Debye model parameters. This analysis provides insights into the relative Cs-Br and Sn-Br chemical bonds within the tetragonal structure (space group: I 4/ mcm ), which remains stable throughout the temperature range studied. Combined with neutron data, X-N techniques permit the identification of the Sn 2+ lone electron pair (5s 2 ) in the two-dimensional framework, occupying empty space opposite to the four Sn-Br bonds of the pyramidal [SnBr 4 ] coordination polyhedra. Additionally, diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy unveils an indirect optical gap of approximately ∼3.3 eV, aligning with the calculated value from the B3LYP -DFT method (∼3.2 eV). The material exhibits a positive Seebeck coefficient as high as 6.5 × 10 4 μV K -1 at 350 K, which evolves down to negative values of -3.0 × 10 3 μV K -1 at 550 K, surpassing values reported for other halide perovskites. Notably, the thermal conductivity remains exceptionally low, between 0.32 and 0.25 W m -1 K -1 .

Introduction: The phenomenal expansion of angiosperms has prompted many investigations into the factors driving their diversification, but there remain significant gaps in our understanding of flowering plant species diversity., Methods: Using the crown age of families from five studies, we used a maximum likelihood approach to classify families as having poor, predicted or high species richness (SR) using strict consensus criteria. Using these categories, we looked for associations between family SR and i) the presence of an inferred familial ancestral polyploidization event, ii) 23 life history and floral traits compiled from previously published datasets and papers, and iii) sexual system (dioecy) or genetically determined self-incompatibility (SI) mating system using an updated version of our own database and iv) geographic distribution using a new database describing the global distribution of plant species/families across realms and biomes and inferred range., Results: We find that more than a third of angiosperm families (65%) had predicted SR, a large proportion (30.2%) were species poor, while few (4.8%) had high SR. Families with poor SR were less likely to have undergone an ancestral polyploidization event, exhibited deficits in diverse traits, and were more likely to have unknown breeding systems and to be found in only one or few biomes and realms, especially the Afrotropics or Australasia. On the other hand, families with high SR were more likely to have animal mediated pollination or dispersal, are enriched for epiphytes and taxa with an annual life history, and were more likely to harbour sporophytic SI systems. Despite the great success of hybrid CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite in photovoltaics, ascribed to its excellent optical absorption properties, its instability toward moisture is still an insurmountable drawback. All-inorganic perovskites are much less sensitive to humidity and have potential interest for solar cell applications. Alternative strategies have been developed to design novel materials with appealing properties, which include different topologies for the octahedral arrangements from three-dimensional (3D, e.g., CsPbBr 3 perovskite) or two-dimensional (2D, e.g., CsPb 2 Br 5 ) to zero-dimensional (0D, i.e., without connection between octahedra), as the case of Cs 4 PbX 6 (X = Br, I) halides. The crystal structure of these materials is complex, and their thermal evolution is unexplored. In this work, we describe the synthesis of Cs 4 PbBr 6- x I x ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6) halides by mechanochemical procedures with green credentials; these specimens display excellent crystallinity enabling a detailed structural investigation from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) data, essential to revisit some features in the temperature range of 90-298 K. In all this regime, the structure is defined in the trigonal R 3̅ c space group (#167). The presence of Cs and X vacancies suggests some ionic mobility into the crystal structure of these 0D halides. Bond valence maps (BVMs) are useful in determining isovalent surfaces for both Cs 4 PbBr 6 and Cs 4 PbI 6 phases, unveiling the likely ionic pathways for cesium and bromide ions and showing a full 3D connection in the bromide phase, in contrast to the iodide one. On the other hand, the evolution of the anisotropic displacement parameters is useful to evaluate the Debye temperatures, confirming that Cs atoms have more freedom to move, while Pb is more confined at its site, likely due to a higher covalency degree in Pb-X bonds than that in Cs-X bonds. Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy shows that the optical band gap can be tuned depending on iodine content ( x ) in the range of 3.6-3.06 eV. From density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the general trend of reducing the band gap when Br is replaced by I is well reproduced.

In this work, we present the potassium niobate (KNbO 3 ) nanoparticles as a suitable mesoporous photoelectrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The KNbO 3 particles were synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using mild conditions and characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. The particles presented a pyramidal tower-like shape with an orthorhombic structure and an indirect bandgap of (3.0 ± 0.1) eV. Dye-sensitized solar cells were assembled using the synthesized KNbO 3 nanoparticles, which were deposited as a photoelectrode on a TiO 2 recombination charge blocking layer. It is noticeable that the synergistic operation of the TiO 2 blocking layer and KNbO 3 photoelectrode is essential to achieve photovoltaic behaviour in our solar cells. The short-circuit current density of J sc = 2.82 mA, open-circuit voltage V oc = 669 mV, fill factor FF = 0.62, and a power conversion efficiency PCE = 1.17%, reports elevated parameters if compared to other DSSCs alternative materials, becoming potassium niobate suitable as photoelectrode.

Gold and silver subnanoclusters with few atoms are prominent candidates for catalysis-related applications, primarily because of the large fraction of lower-coordinated atoms exposed and ready to interact with external chemical species. However, an in-depth energetic analysis is necessary to characterize the relevant terms within the molecular adsorption process that can frame the interactions within the Sabatier principle. Herein, we investigate the interaction between Ag n and Au n subnanoclusters (clu, n = 2-7) and N 2 , NO, CO, and O 2 molecules, using scalar-relativistic density functional theory calculations within van der Waals D3 corrections. The onefold top site is preferred for all chemisorption cases, with a predominance of linear (≈180°) and bent (≈120°) molecular geometries. A larger magnitude of adsorption energy is correlated with smaller distances between molecules and clusters and with the weakening of the adsorbates bond strength represented by the increase of the equilibrium distances and decrease of molecular stretching frequencies. From the energetic decomposition, the interaction energy term was established as an excellent descriptor to classify subnanoclusters in the adsorption/desorption process concomitant with the Sabatier principle. The limiting cases: (i) weak molecular adsorption on the subnanoclusters, which may compromise the reaction activation, where an interaction energy magnitude close to 0 eV is observed (e.g., physisorption in N 2 /Ag 6 ); and (ii) strong molecular interactions with the subnanoclusters, given the interaction energy magnitude is larger than at least one of the individual fragment binding energies (e.g., strong chemisorption in CO/Au 4 and NO/Au 4 ), conferring a decrease in the desorption rate and an increase in the possible poisoning rate. However, the intermediate cases are promising by involving interaction energy magnitudes between zero and fragment binding energies. Following the molecular closed-shell (open-shell) electronic configuration, we find a predominant electrostatic (covalent) nature of the physical interactions for N 2 ⋯clu and CO ⋯clu (O 2 ⋯clu and NO⋯clu), except in the physisorption case (N 2 /Ag 6 ) where dispersive interaction is dominant. During domestication, the selection of cultivated plants often reduces microbiota diversity compared with their wild ancestors. Microbiota in compartments such as the phyllosphere or rhizosphere can promote fruit tree health, growth, and development. Cordia dodecandra is a deciduous tree used by Maya people for its fruit and wood, growing, to date, in remnant forest fragments and homegardens (traditional agroforestry systems) in Yucatán. In this work, we evaluated the microbiota's alpha and beta diversity per compartment (phyllosphere and rhizosphere) and per population (forest and homegarden) in the Northeast and Southwest Yucatán regions. Eight composite DNA samples (per compartment/population/region combination) were amplified for 16S-RNA (bacteria) and ITS1-2 (fungi) and sequenced by Illumina MiSeq. Bioinformatic analyses were performed with QIIME and phyloseq. For bacteria and fungi, from 107,947 and 128,786 assembled sequences, 618 and 1092 operating taxonomic units (OTUs) were assigned, respectively. The alpha diversity of bacteria and fungi was highly variable among samples and was similar among compartments and populations. A significant species turnover among populations and regions was observed in the rhizosphere. The core microbiota from the phyllosphere was similar among populations and regions. Forests and homegarden populations are reservoirs of the C. dodecandra phyllosphere core microbiome and significant rhizosphere biodiversity.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskites like CsPbBr 3 , CsPbI 3 , or RbPbI 3 are good replacements for the classical hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites like CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 , susceptible to fast degradation in the presence of humid air. They also exhibit outstanding light absorption properties suitable for solar energy applications. Here, we describe the synthesis of RbPbI 3 by mechanochemical procedures with green credentials, avoiding toxic or expensive organic solvents; this specimen exhibits excellent crystallinity. We report neutron powder diffraction data, essential to revisit some subtle structural features around room temperature (200-400 K). In all these regimes, the orthorhombic Pnma crystal structure is characterized by the presence along the b direction of the crystal of double rows of edge-sharing PbI 6 octahedra. The lone electron pairs of Pb 2+ ions have a strong stereochemical effect on the PbI 6 octahedral distortion. The relative covalency of Rb-I versus Pb-I bonds shows that the Pb-I-related motions are more rigid than Rb-I-related vibrations, as seen in the Debye temperatures from the evolution of the anisotropic displacements. The optical gap, measured by diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy, is ∼2.51 eV and agrees well with ab initio calculations. The thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient is 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of other halide perovskites, with a value of ∼117,000 μV·K -1 at 460 K.

Skutterudite-type compounds based on □Co 4 Sb 12 pnictide are promising for thermoelectric application due to their good Seebeck values and high carrier mobility. Filling the 8 a voids (in the cubic space group Im 3̅) with different elements (alkali, alkali earth, and rare earth) helps to reduce the thermal conductivity and thus increases the thermoelectric performance. A systematic characterization by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction of different M-filled Co 4 Sb 12 (M = K, Sr, La, Ce, and Yb) skutterudites was carried out under high pressure in the range ∼0-12 GPa. The isothermal equations of state (EOS) were obtained in this pressure range and the Bulk moduli ( B 0 ) were calculated for all the filled skutterudites, yielding unexpected results. A lattice expansion due to the filler elements fails in the description of the Bulk moduli. Topochemical studies of the filler site environment exhibited a slight disturbance and an increased ionic character when the filler is incorporated. The mechanical properties by means of Bulk moduli resulted in being sensitive to the presence of filler atoms inside the skutterudite voids, being affected by the covalent/ionic exchange of the Co-Sb and Sb-Sb bonds.

Schwannomatosis (SWNTS) is a genetic cancer predisposition syndrome that manifests as multiple and often painful neuronal tumors called schwannomas (SWNs). While germline mutations in SMARCB1 or LZTR1, plus somatic mutations in NF2 and loss of heterozygosity in chromosome 22q have been identified in a subset of patients, little is known about the epigenomic and genomic alterations that drive SWNTS-related SWNs (SWNTS-SWNs) in a majority of the cases. We performed multiplatform genomic analysis and established the molecular signature of SWNTS-SWNs. We show that SWNTS-SWNs harbor distinct genomic features relative to the histologically identical non-syndromic sporadic SWNs (NS-SWNS). We demonstrate the existence of four distinct DNA methylation subgroups of SWNTS-SWNs that are associated with specific transcriptional programs and tumor location. We show several novel recurrent non-22q deletions and structural rearrangements. We detected the SH3PXD2A-HTRA1 gene fusion in SWNTS-SWNs, with predominance in LZTR1-mutant tumors. In addition, we identified specific genetic, epigenetic, and actionable transcriptional programs associated with painful SWNTS-SWNs including PIGF, VEGF, MEK, and MTOR pathways, which may be harnessed for management of this syndrome.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) accounts for over 95% of penile malignancies and causes significant mortality and morbidity in developing countries. Molecular mechanisms and therapies of PSCC are understudied, owing to scarcity of laboratory models. Herein, we describe a genetically engineered mouse model of PSCC, by co-deletion of Smad4 and Apc in the androgen-responsive epithelium of the penis. Mouse PSCC fosters an immunosuppressive microenvironment with myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) as a dominant population. Preclinical trials in the model demonstrate synergistic efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade with the MDSC-diminishing drugs cabozantinib or celecoxib. A critical clinical problem of PSCC is chemoresistance to cisplatin, which is induced by Pten deficiency on the backdrop of Smad4/Apc co-deletion. Drug screen studies informed by targeted proteomics identify a few potential therapeutic strategies for PSCC. Our studies have established what we believe to be essential resources for studying PSCC biology and developing therapeutic strategies.

Cu 2 O low-index surfaces periodic models have been simulated based on density functional theory. The calculated surfaces energies allowed estimating the morphology by means of the Wulff theorem as well as the investigation of possible paths of morphological changes. Therefore, systematic morphology diagrams and change paths according to the energy modulation in relation to the surfaces stabilizations were elaborated. The applicability of this strategy was exemplified by comparing the obtained results with experimental available data from the literature. The morphology diagrams with the quantitative energetic point of view can be used as a guide to support experimental works in order to understand the relation between surface interactions and crystal growth., (© 2019 The Authors.)

ATiO 3 -type materials may exist in two different crystalline forms: the perovskite and ilmenite. While many papers have devoted their attention to evaluating the structural properties of the perovskite phase, the structural stability of the ilmenite one still remains unsolved. Here, we present our results based on the lattice dynamics and first-principles calculations (density functional theory) of the CdTiO 3 ilmenite phase, which are confronted with experimental data obtained through micro Raman spectroscopy that is a very good tool to probe the local crystal structure. Additional Raman bands, which are not foreseen from group-theory for the ilmenite rhombohedral structure, appeared in both low temperature (under vacuum condition) and high-pressure (at room temperature) spectra. The behavior can be explained by considering the local loss of inversion symmetry operation which reduces the overall space group from [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) to [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]). Our results can also be extended to other ilmenite-type compositions.

A theoretical study was elaborated to support the experimental results of the Zn-doped α-Ag 2 WO 4 . Theses α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) solid solutions were obtained by coprecipitation method. X-ray diffraction data indicated that all α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) microcrystals presented an orthorhombic structure. The experimental values of the micro-Raman frequencies were in reasonable agreement with both previously reported and calculated results. Microscopy images showed that the replacement of Ag + by Zn 2+ promoted a reduction in the average crystal size and modifications in the morphology, from rod-like with hexagonal shape to roll-like with a curved surface. A theoretical methodology based on the surfaces calculations and Wulff constructions was applied to study the particle shapes transformations and the surface energy variations in α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) system. The decrease in the band gap value (from 3.18 to 3.08 eV) and the red shift in photoluminescence with the Zn 2+ addition were associated with intermediary energy levels between the valence and conduction bands. First-principles calculations with density functional theory associated with B3LYP hybrid functional were conducted. The calculated band structures revealed an indirect band gap for the α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 models. The electronic properties of α-Ag 2 WO 4 and α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 microcrystals were linked to distortion effects and oxygen vacancies (V O x ) present in the clusters, respectively. Finally, photoluminescence properties of α-Ag 2 WO 4 and α-Ag 2-2x Zn x WO 4 microcrystals were explained by means of distortional effects and oxygen vacancies (V O x ) in [AgO y ] (y = 2, 4, 6, and 7) and [WO 6 ] clusters, respectively, causing a red shift. Calculations revealed that the substitution for Ag + with Zn 2+ occurred randomly in the α-Ag 2 WO 4 lattice, and it was more favorable on the Ag4 site, where the local coordination of Ag + cations was four.

Neuronal cell identity is established during development and must be maintained throughout an animal's life (Fishell G, Heintz N. Neuron 80: 602-612, 2013). Transcription factors critical for establishing neuronal identity can be required for maintaining it (Deneris ES, Hobert O. Nat Neurosci 17: 899-907, 2014). Posttranscriptional regulation also plays an important role in neuronal differentiation (Bian S, Sun T. Mol Neurobiol 44: 359-373, 2011), but its role in maintaining cell identity is less established. To better understand how posttranscriptional regulation might contribute to cell identity, we examined the proprioceptive neurons in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), a highly specialized sensory neuron class, with well-established properties that distinguish them from other neurons in the ganglion. By conditionally ablating Dicer in mice, using parvalbumin (Pvalb)-driven Cre recombinase, we impaired posttranscriptional regulation in the proprioceptive sensory neuron population. Knockout (KO) animals display a progressive form of ataxia at the beginning of the fourth postnatal week that is accompanied by a cell death within the DRG. Before cell loss, expression profiling shows a reduction of proprioceptor specific genes and an increased expression of nonproprioceptive genes normally enriched in other ganglion neurons. Furthermore, although central connections of these neurons are intact, the peripheral connections to the muscle are functionally impaired. Posttranscriptional regulation is therefore necessary to retain the transcriptional identity and support functional specialization of the proprioceptive sensory neurons. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We have demonstrated that selectively impairing Dicer in parvalbumin-positive neurons, which include the proprioceptors, triggers behavioral changes, a lack of muscle connectivity, and a loss of transcriptional identity as observed through RNA sequencing. These results suggest that Dicer and, most likely by extension, microRNAs are crucially important for maintaining proprioception. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the usefulness of physical examination, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), white blood cell (WBC) count, and absolute neutrophils counts (ANCs) for the diagnosis of invasive bacterial infections (IBIs) and potentially serious bacterial infections in infants younger than the age of 3 months presenting with fever without source (FWS) to the emergency department (ED)., Methods: A descriptive retrospective study that includes all infants aged younger than 3 months who presented with FWS to the ED between July 2008 and January 2012. We evaluated diagnostic performance for each test by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio were also calculated., Results: Three hundred eighteen patients met the inclusion criteria. Eleven bacteremia (3.5%) and 76 urinary tract infections (23.9%) were diagnosed. To detect IBI, the areas under the curve for the different tests were as follows: PCT, 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.57-0.96); CRP, 0.54 (95% CI, 0.36-0.73); ANC, 0.53 (95% CI, 0.34-0.71); and WBC, 0.42 (0.24-0.61). To detect potentially serious bacterial infections, the areas under the curve were as follows: PCT, 0.66 (95% CI, 0.59-0.74); CRP, 0.68 (0.60-0.76); ANC, 0.64 (0.56-0.71); and WBC, 0.66 (0.58-0.72)., Conclusions: Procalcitonin is better than CRP, WBC, and ANC to confirm or dismiss the presence of an IBI in infants aged younger than 3 months presenting with FWS to the ED. However, it could not identify almost 30% of infants with IBI. Most patients diagnosed with IBI (10 of 11) presented abnormal values in at least one of the analytical parameters and/or physical appearance. Four of 5 patients with IBI and well appearing presented abnormal results in at least one of the analytical parameters. Therefore, the development of tools combining different tests including the new biomarkers could increase the reliability of the tests for the diagnosis of IBI in these patients.

In this work, we investigated the effects of chemical substitution on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of α-Ag2-2xNixWO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08) solid solutions prepared by a facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The results showed that the increase of Ni concentration in α-Ag2WO4 microcrystals as a host matrix caused a morphological transformation and a shift of the electronic and optical properties. Based on first principles calculations and using Wulff's construction, particle shapes and their transformations in α-Ag2WO4 and α-Ag2-2xNixWO4 can be affected by controlling the ratios of surface energy values between the different facets. In addition, theoretical calculations revealed that Ni substitution in α-Ag2WO4 is more favorable in the Ag2 and Ag4 positions, in which the local coordination of Ag atoms corresponds to clusters with coordination numbers of seven and four, respectively. This behavior could be related to the degree of medium-range structural disorder in α-Ag2-2xNixWO4 crystals. The experimental results were correlated with theoretical simulations to achieve a deeper understanding of the relationship between morphology and properties. These results provide the basis for a rational design for the compositional modulation of structural and optical properties.

Morphology is a key property of materials. Owing to their precise structure and morphology, crystals and nanocrystals provide excellent model systems for joint experimental and theoretical investigations into surface-related properties. Faceted polyhedral crystals and nanocrystals expose well-defined crystallographic planes depending on the synthesis method, which allow for thoughtful investigations into structure-reactivity relationships under practical conditions. This feature article introduces recent work, based on the combined use of experimental findings and first-principles calculations, to provide deeper knowledge of the electronic, structural, and energetic properties controlling the morphology and the transformation mechanisms of different metals and metal oxides: Ag, anatase TiO2, BaZrO3, and α-Ag2WO4. According to the Wulff theorem, the equilibrium shapes of these systems are obtained from the values of their respective surface energies. These investigations are useful to gain further understanding of how to achieve morphological control of complex three-dimensional crystals by tuning the ratio of the surface energy values of the different facets. This strategy allows the prediction of possible morphologies for a crystal and/or nanocrystal by controlling the relative values of surface energies.

This study presents a European-wide analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of the cosmogenic isotope (7)Be in surface air. This is the first time that a long term database of 34 sampling sites that regularly provide data to the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring (REM) network, managed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, is used. While temporal coverage varies between stations, some of them have delivered data more or less continuously from 1984 to 2011. The station locations were considerably heterogeneous, both in terms of latitude and altitude, a range which should ensure a high degree of representativeness of the results. The mean values of (7)Be activity concentration presented a spatial distribution value ranging from 2.0 to 5.4 mBq/m(3) over the European Union. The results of the ANOVA analysis of all (7)Be data available indicated that its temporal and spatial distributions were mainly explained by the location and characteristic of the sampling sites rather than its temporal distribution (yearly, seasonal and monthly). Higher (7)Be concentrations were registered at the middle, compared to high-latitude, regions. However, there was no correlation with altitude, since all stations are sited within the atmospheric boundary layer. In addition, the total and yearly analyses of the data indicated a dynamic range of (7)Be activity for each solar cycle and phase (maximum or minimum), different impact on stations having been observed according to their location. Finally, the results indicated a significant seasonal and monthly variation for (7)Be activity concentration across the European Union, with maximum concentrations occurring in the summer and minimum in the winter, although with differences in the values reached. The knowledge of the horizontal and vertical distribution of this natural radionuclide in the atmosphere is a key parameter for modelling studies of atmospheric processes, which are important phenomena to be taken into account in the case of a nuclear accident., (Copyright © 2014 The Authors. This study is a framework proposal for understanding the antimicrobacterial effect of both α-Ag2WO4 microcrystals (AWO) synthesized using a microwave hydrothermal (MH) method and α-Ag2WO4 microcrystals with Ag metallic nanofilaments (AWO:Ag) obtained by irradiation employing an electron beam to combat against planktonic cells of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results reveal that both AWO and AWO:Ag solutions have bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects, but the irradiated sample is more efficient; i.e., a 4-fold of the MRSA planktonic cells as compared to the nonirradiated sample was observed. In addition, first principles calculations were performed to obtain structural and electronic properties of AWO and metallic Ag, which provides strong quantitative support for an antimicrobacterial mechanism based on the enhancement of electron transfer processes between α-Ag2WO4 and Ag nanoparticles.

This paper presents the correlation among electronic and optical property effects induced by the addition of different concentrations of europium (Eu3+) in zinc sulfide (ZnS) by microwave-assisted solvothermal (MAS) method. A shift of the photoluminescence (PL) emission was observed with the increase of Eu3+. The periodic DFT calculations with the B3LYP hybrid functional were performed using the CRYSTAL computer code. The UV-vis spectra and theoretical results indicate a decrease in behavior of the energy gap as a function of dopant concentration. Therefore, new localized states are generated in the forbidden band gap region, the new states increase the probability of less energy transitions which may be responsible for a red shift in the PL bands spectrum.

In this work, we utilise a combination of theory, computation and experiments to understand the early events related to the nucleation of Ag filaments on α-Ag2WO4 crystals, which is driven by an accelerated electron beam from an electron microscope under high vacuum. The growth process and the chemical composition and elemental distribution in these filaments were analysed in depth at the nanoscale level using TEM, HAADF, EDS and XPS; the structural and electronic aspects were systematically studied in using first-principles electronic structure theory within QTAIM framework. The Ag nucleation and formation on α-Ag2WO4 is a result of the order/disorder effects generated in the crystal by the electron-beam irradiation. Both experimental and theoretical results show that this behavior is associated with structural and electronic changes of the [AgO2] and [AgO4] clusters and, to a minor extent, to the [WO6] cluster; these clusters collectively represent the constituent building blocks of α-Ag2WO4.

In this paper, we investigate a correlation between theoretical calculations and experimental data to explain the electronic structure and optical properties of silver molybdate (β-Ag2MoO4) microcrystals synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, and micro-Raman spectroscopy confirmed that these microcrystals crystallize in a spinel-type cubic structure. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the processing temperatures influence in the final shape of microcrystals. Optical properties were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy; the increase in the optical band gap energy (Egap) (from 3.24 to 3.31 eV) with processing temperature is associated with the reduction of intermediary energy levels. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level were conducted. The calculated band structure revealed an indirect Egap of approximately 4.00 and 3.34 eV for the β-Ag2MoO4 without and with the formation of defects, respectively. Theoretical calculations based on density of states and electron density maps were employed to understand the polarization phenomenon induced by structural defects in the β-Ag2MoO4 crystals. Finally, photoluminescence properties at room temperature of β-Ag2MoO4 microcrystals were explained by the charge-transfer mechanism involving tetrahedral [MoO4] clusters.

This paper reports a theoretical and experimental study of the heterostructure photocatalytic activity in a CdS or ZnS and CdS@ZnS decorated system prepared by a microwave assisted solvothermal (MAS) method. A theoretical model of the decorated system was created in order to analyze the electronic transition mainly in their interface. The results show that CdS and ZnS interfaces produce an electron charge transfer from the CdS electron-populated clusters to the ZnS hole-populated clusters which helps to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the CdS@ZnS decorated system.

Background and Scope: New data are presented on the distribution and frequency of self-sterility (SS) - predominantly pre-zygotic self-incompatibility (SI) systems - in flowering plants and the hypothesis is tested that families with self-sterile taxa have higher net diversification rates (DRs) than those with exclusively self-compatible taxa using both absolute and relative rate tests., Key Results: Three major forms of SI systems (where pollen is rejected at the stigmatic, stylar or ovarian interface) are found to occur in the oldest families of flowering plants, with times of divergence >100 million years before the present (mybp), while post-fertilization SS and heterostyly appear in families with crown ages of 81 and 87 mybp, respectively. It is also founnd that many (22) angiosperm families exhibit >1 SI phenotype and that the distribution of different types of SS does not show strong phylogenetic clustering, collectively suggesting that SS and SI systems have evolved repeatedly de novo in angiosperm history. Families bearing self-sterile taxa have higher absolute DRs using all available calibrations of the angiosperm tree, and this affect is caused mostly by the high DR of families with homomorphic SI systems (in particular stigmatic SI) or those in which multiple SS/SI phenotypes have been observed (polymorphic). Lastly, using sister comparisons, it is further demonstrated that in 29 of 38 sister pairs (including 95 families), the self-sterile sister group had higher species richness and DR than its self-compatible sister based on either the total number of taxa in the clade with SS or only the estimated fraction to harbour SS based on literature surveys., Conclusions: Collectively, these analyses point to the importance of SS, particularly pre-zygotic SI in the evolution of flowering plants.

Introduction: Family members of child patients have traditionally not been allowed to be present during invasive procedures., Objectives: To evaluate the level of satisfaction of family members, healthcare professionals, and the patients themselves, when family members are present during invasive procedures carried out in the pediatric emergency department., Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out, which included a questionnaire containing demographic information, the details of the procedure, and the level of satisfaction of the patient, their family members, and the healthcare professionals present., Results: Data was obtained from 75 procedures. In 5 of these, family members chose not to be present during the procedure. The most frequent procedures were lumbar punctures (44%), laceration repairs (22,7%) and venopunctures (17,3%). All (100%) the children who were asked wanted their family members to be present. 90% of family members and 57% of healthcare professionals were of the opinion that the presence of family members facilitated the procedure. Furthermore, 90% of family members and 76% of healthcare professionals thought that family presence was beneficial to the patient. 95% of family members and 71% of healthcare professionals thought that the option to be present during invasive procedures should be given to family members. 73% of healthcare professionals were satisfied with the presence of family members. On a scale of one to ten, overall satisfaction of family members was 9.5., Conclusions: In our experience, family presence during invasive procedures is possible, and we have found this to be beneficial to the child. Background and Aims: Selection may favour a partial or complete loss of self-incompatibility (SI) if it increases the reproductive output of individuals in the presence of low mate availability. The reproductive output of individuals varying in their strength of SI may also be affected by population density via its affect on the spatial structuring and number of S-alleles in populations. Modifiers increasing levels of self-compatibility can be selected when self-compatible individuals receive reproductive compensation by, for example, increasing seed set and/or when they become associated with high fitness genotypes., Methods: The effect of variation in the strength of SI and scrub density (low versus high) on seed set, seed germination and inbreeding depression in seed germination (delta(germ)) was investigated in the partially self-incompatible species Flourensia cernua by analysing data from self-, cross- and open-pollinated florets., Key Results: Examination of 100 plants in both high and low scrub densities revealed that 51% of plants were strongly self-incompatible and 49 % varied from being self-incompatible to self-compatible. Seed set after hand cross-pollination was higher than after open-pollination for self-incompatible, partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants but was uniformly low for strongly self-incompatible plants. Strongly self-incompatible and self-incompatible plants exhibited lower seed set, seed germination and multiplicative female fitness (floral display x seed set x seed germination) in open-pollinated florets compared with partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants. Scrub density also had an effect on seed set and inbreeding depression: in low-density scrubs seed set was higher after open-pollination and delta(germ) was lower., Conclusions: These data suggest that (a) plants suffered outcross pollen limitation, (b) female fitness in partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants is enhanced by increased mate-compatibility and (c) plants in low-density scrubs received higher quality pollen via open-pollination than plants in high-density scrubs.

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is defined by the absence of intramural ganglia of Meissner and Auerbach along variable lengths of the gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) type B is characterized by the malformation of the parasympathetic submucous plexus of the gut. A connection appears to exist between these two enteric nervous system abnormalities. Due to the major role played by the RET proto-oncogene in HSCR, we sought to determine whether this gene was also related to INDB. dHPLC techniques were employed to screen the RET coding region in 23 patients presenting with INDB and 30 patients with a combined HSCR+INDB phenotype. In addition, eight RET single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were strategically selected and genotyped by TaqMan technology. The distribution of SNPs and haplotypes was compared among the different groups of patients (INDB, HSCR+INDB, HSCR) and the controls. We found several RET mutations in our patients and some differences in the distribution of the RET SNPs among the groups of study. Our results suggest an involvement of RET in the pathogenesis of intestinal INDB, although by different molecular mechanisms than those leading to HSCR. Further investigation is warranted to elucidate these precise mechanisms and to clarify the genetic nature of INDB.

The self-incompatibility (SI) status of 571 taxa from the Asteraceae was identified and the taxa were scored as having SI, partial SI or self-compatibility (SC) as their breeding system. A molecular phylogeny of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was constructed for 211 of these taxa. Macrophylogenetic methods were used to test hypotheses concerning the ancestral state of SI in the Asteraceae, the gain and loss of SI, the irreversibility of the loss of SI and the potential for partial SI or SC to be terminal states. The ancestral breeding system in the family could not be resolved. Both maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses indicated that transitions among all breeding system states provide the best fit to the data and that neither partial SI nor SC is a terminal state. Furthermore, the data indicated that the loss of SI is not irreversible, although breeding system evolution has been more dynamic in some clades than in others. These results are discussed within the context of evidence for the gain and loss of SI, the evolutionary role of partial SI and methodological assumptions of tests of breeding system evolution.

Backgrounds and Aims: Flourensia cernua is a partially self-incompatible, wind-pollinated shrub that grows in two scrub types of contrasting densities. It was anticipated that differences in plant density would affect the amount of genotype availability, and thus higher outcrossing rates and less genetic differentiation would be found at high-density sites., Methods: At five high-density sites and at five low-density sites, 11 allozyme loci were analysed in adults. Outcrossing rates were estimated using five allozyme loci sampled from eight families from each scrub type., Key Results: High levels of genetic variation were found at all sites (ranging from P = 82-100 %, He = 0.33-0.45, and Ho = 0.4-0.59). Heterozygotes were found in excess (FIS = -0.15 +/- 0.06 s.d.), suggesting that natural selection favours heterozygosity, and there was little differentiation between sites (FST = 0.08 +/- 0.02 s.d.). Life history attributes, such as long-lived habit and wide geographic distribution, as well as the presence of a self-incompatibility system may explain these results. Outcrossing rates did not differ from 1.0 in both scrub types, and there was no genetic differentiation between scrub types (FST = -0.01 +/- 0.004 s.d.)., Conclusions: The high rate of outcrossing favoured by partial incompatibility may generate unrestricted gene flow between scrub types and thus may explain the lack of differentiation between them. High heterozygosity could be expected in long-lived plants of arid zones as they confront a variable and stressing environment.

Three proteins (env, gag, and tax) encoded by the human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) genome were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The env protein contained a substantial part of the gp46 domain and a majority of the p21e domain. The gag protein contained all of p24 and portions of p19 and p15. In addition to these two structural proteins, a full-length tax (p40X) construct was obtained. All three recombinant proteins were purified to near homogeneity. When used in an immunoblot assay, the three recombinant proteins detected antibodies in more HTLV-I antibody-positive patient sera than did the corresponding native proteins. Antibodies to at least two of these three different gene products were detected in 98.4% of adult T-cell leukemia patients, 100% of HTLV-I-associated myelopathy patients, 97.4% of asymptomatic carriers, and 94% of uncharacterized HTLV-I-positive patients. Antibody to recombinant tax was found in 4.9% of adult T-cell leukemia patients, whereas antibody to recombinant env could not be detected. These recombinant proteins from three different gene products may be useful in detecting or confirming the presence of antibodies to HTLV-I.

A short review is made on the bacterial pathogenicity factors related with urinary-tract invasion and renal damage in pyelonephritis. Microbiological findings obtained after a revision of 14,181 quantitative cultures carried our in the last nine years on children under 7 years old are discussed. "E. coli" is implicated in almost a half of positive cultures; "K pneumoniae" seems to be specially related with urinary infections of premature and newborn infants (20-30% of the bacterial positivities in both groups). "Proteus" and "Pseudomonas" have more etiological weight in older children. True hospital epidemics of urinary infections have been non observed. As serological test, the o-agglutination of homologous strain (technique of Karmierczac et al.) was used in order to determine the site of infection. A rather close correlation between positivity of serologic test and renal involvement is showed.

Treatment of the chemically transformed fibroblasts BP-A31 and other cell lines with low concentrations of cycloheximide (CHM) for 72 h followed by the removal of the protein synthesis inhibitor leads to the proliferation of alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO)-resistant phenotypes. These drug-resistant cells contain almost no ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and concomitantly very low levels of putrescine and spermidine. Southern blot analysis and measurements of ODC activity and intracellular polyamine levels showed that the described mechanism of inducing resistance to DFMO triggered by CHM does not involve ODC gene amplification, altered transport of the drug or reduced affinity of the enzyme for DFMO.
