1. Why engineers are right to avoid the quantum reality offered by the orthodox theory?

Abstract

A proper knowledge of the reality of a physical theory is important to get an understanding of empirical phenomena. Despite its extraordinary predictive successes, the orthodox (also known as the Copenhagen) theory provides an indigestible definition of quantum reality: objects (such as electrons) become part of a nebulous many-particle wave function with no properties at all, unless the property is explicitly measured. To make matters worse, orthodox theory does not define measurements in a clear way. This view of reality is foreign to most modern engineers who assume that quantum objects, like classical objects, always have real properties, independent of any measurement. Despite being contrary to the orthodox theory, the intuition of engineers is not in conflict with other quantum theories, where the observer plays no fundamental role. Good quantum intuition needs to be based on a correct knowledge of the fundamental elements of the quantum theory that is being used. Abstract

In this study, the electrostatically induced quantum confinement structure, quantum point contact, has been realized in p-type trilayer tungsten diselenide-based van der Waals heterostructure with modified van der Waals contact method with degenerately doped transition metal dichalcogenide crystals. Clear quantized conductance and pinch-off state through the one-dimensional confinement were observed by dual-gating of split gate electrodes and top gate. Conductance plateaus were observed at step of 0.5 $\times$ 2e$^{2}$/h at zero and high magnetic field in addition to quarter plateaus at a finite bias voltage condition indicating the signature of spin-polarized quantum point contact realization., Comment: Paper:25 pages and 4 figures, SI: 13 pages and 10 figures, accepted for publication in Nano Letters

9. Anisotropic intrinsic spin Hall effect in quantum wires

Abstract

We use numerical simulations to investigate the spin Hall effect in quantum wires in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the intrinsic spin Hall effect is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the wire, and that the nature of this anisotropy depends strongly on the electron density and the relative strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. In particular, at low densities when only one subband of the quantum wire is occupied, the spin Hall effect is strongest for electron momentum along the $[\bar{1}10]$ axis, which is opposite than what is expected for the purely 2D case. In addition, when more than one subband is occupied, the strength and anisotropy of the spin Hall effect can vary greatly over relatively small changes in electron density, which makes it difficult to predict which wire orientation will maximize the strength of the spin Hall effect. These results help to illuminate the role of quantum confinement in spin-orbit-coupled systems, and can serve as a guide for future experimental work on the use of quantum wires for spin-Hall-based spintronic applications., Comment: 19 pages and 4 figures

10. Subband anticrossing and the spin Hall effect in quantum wires

Abstract

We report on numerical simulations of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in semiconductor quantum wires as a function of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength, the electron density, and the width of the wire. We find that the strength of the spin Hall effect does not depend monotonically on these parameters, but instead exhibits a local maximum. This behavior is explained by considering the dispersion relation of the electrons in the wire, which is characterized by the anticrossing of adjacent subbands. These results lead to a simple estimate of the optimal wire width for spin Hall transport experiments, and simulations indicate that this optimal width is independent of disorder. The anticrossing of adjacent subbands is related to a quantum phase transition in momentum space, and is accompanied by an enhancement of the Berry curvature and subsequently in the magnitude of the spin Hall effect., Comment: 20 pages and 5 figures

Abstract

We show a dramatic deviation from ergodicity for the conductance fluctuations in graphene. In marked contrast to the ergodicity of dirty metals, fluctuations generated by varying magnetic field are shown to be much smaller than those obtained when sweeping Fermi energy. They also exhibit a strongly anisotropic response to the symmetry-breaking effects of a magnetic field, when applied perpendicular or parallel to the graphene plane. Abstract

Perairan Sangihe Talaud merupakan bagian dari Laut Sulawesi yang merupakan jalur yang menghubungkan Samudera Pasifik dengan Selat Makasar. Dari sudut yang lain laut Sulawesi tersebut merupakan Alur Laut yang biasa digunakan untuk kepentingan pelayaran Niaga atau Militer, Perairan Sangihe Talaud dapat dikategorikan sebagai perairan yang rawan dengan tindak kejahatan dilaut dan salah satu perairan di Indonesia yang rawan dengan masuknya kapal-kapal asing baik kapal-kapal permukaan maupun kapal-kapal bawah air. Dalam operasi Kapal Selam dibutuhkan data-data oseanografi fisik seperti temperatur, salinitas dan Kecepatan Suara, untuk menentukan dimana Kapal Selam tersebut mendapatkan posisi yang aman dari SONAR Kapal Permukaan ketika melaksanakan penyelaman. Sehingga dalam hal ini sangat dibutuhkan metode untuk membuat sebuah Peta yang dapat memudahkan Kapal Selam mendapatkan posisi aman tersebut. Dalam Pembuatan Peta ini menggunakan data model Oseanografi yang divalidasi dengan data Survei Oseanografi Pushidrosal pada bulan Januari 2017. Dalam mencari posisi kedalaman terbaik (Best Operation Depth) tersebut berdasarkan dari hasil penghitungan dari kedalaman Lapisan Tercampur (Mixed Layer Depth), dalam penghitungan Lapisan Tercampur (Mixed Layer Depth) ini menggunakan gradien suhu 0,8° C. Setelah mendapatkan nilai dari Best Operation Depth (BD) data nilai kedalaman tersebut di overlaykan ke Peta Laut Indonesia No 483 dan dibuat kontur warna untuk memudahkan pengguna membaca Peta BD tersebut. Dari hasil pembuatan Peta Contour Best Operation Depth (BD) pada Peta Nomor 483 di wilayah perairan Sangihe Talaud, didapatkan 336 titik Stasiun Data CTD dengan hasil nilai kedalaman BD dengan rentang kedalaman BD terdangkal 66,15 meter dan kedalaman terdalam 110,09 meter.

Abstract

Thin films of VO2 were deposited using magnetron sputtering, and abrupt switching of the optical and electrical characteristics due to phase transformation was studied. At a temperature of 58 °C, the as-prepared VO2 films transformed from the insulator to a metallic phase, at a temperature lower than the values reported in the literature. This transformation corresponds to the switching from monoclinic to rutile tetragonal phase, where the electron number density is suddenly increased as a result of V–V dimer dissociation, and this phase transformation is found to be absent in annealed VO2 films. Above 58 °C, the optical absorption of as-prepared VO2 films in the metallic phase was found to be quite anomalous in infrared region due to plasmonic resonance. This phase transformation is reflected in the FTIR spectrum as relative dominance of the vibrational modes. 18. Risk factors of early mortality in COVID-19 patients in Indonesia: A retrospective cohort study in a provincial referral hospital of Aceh

Abstract

Some of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients died after being hospitalized and early mortality is a matter of concern during the pandemic; therefore, it is critical to determine which patients are the most vulnerable of having early mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for early mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Indonesia. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on hospitalized COVID-19 patients from July 2020 to September 2021 at Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and mortality were collected. Early mortality was defined as a death before seven days of the hospitalization. Multivariate regression analysis was employed to determine the risk factors associated with early mortality. We included the data of 624 COVID-19 patients who died during the study period. More than half of the patients were male and aged over 50 years old. The average hospitalization period was 10 days and most patients had more than two comorbidities. Chronic lung disease was the most common comorbidity (46.0%) followed by respiratory disease (26.8%) and heart disease (14.3%). Multiple comorbidities and elevated D-dimers exceeding 3376.92 ng/mL were associated with early mortality with OR: 7.029; 95%CI: 2.02–24.43 and OR: 1.000085, 95%CI: 1.000028–1.000142, respectively. In conclusion, early mortality in COVID-19 patients was associated with having multiple comorbidities and elevated D-dimer level. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the presence of comorbidities and routine laboratory test while managing COVID-19 patients in order to prevent the early mortality.

19. Correlation between high sensitivity C reactive protein (Hs-CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with functional capacity in post COVID-19 syndrome patients

Abstract

Post coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome is one of the causes of reduced functional capacity and work productivity, in particular for healthcare workers. The pathophysiology of the post COVID-19 syndrome is related to complex and multisystem inflammatory mechanisms, and cardiopulmonary exercise rehabilitation program is one of the efforts to improve the recovery process for patients with post COVID-19 syndrome. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the level of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with functional capacity (VO2max) in individuals with post-COVID-19 syndrome who received moderate- and high-intensity supervised cardiopulmonary exercise. A prospective cohort study was conducted at the Integrated Cardiac Rehabilitation Center of Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The supervised cardiopulmonary exercise was conducted for six weeks according to the participant's baseline VO2max. Spearman's and Pearson's correlation tests were used to assess the correlations. A total of 30 individuals (19 and 11 had moderate and high intensity exercise, respectively) were involved in this study. At moderate intensity exercise, the average Hs-CRP and NLR were 3.3 mg/L and 1.99, respectively; while at high intensity, the values were 3.8 mg/L and 1.79, respectively. No significant correlation between Hs-CRP level and functional capacity in both moderate-intensity and high intensity groups. In contrast, NLR was negatively correlated with functional capacity (r=-0.545, p=0.016) in moderate intensity exercise group. In conclusion, NLR value was negatively correlated with functional capacity in individuals with post-COVID-19 syndrome after receiving moderate intensity supervised cardiopulmonary exercise program. Therefore, moderate intensity of cardiopulmonary exercise maybe be used as a program to accelerate the recovery for those with post COVID-19 syndrome.

Quantum metrology, computing, and sensing are areas generating great interest in photonic devices. Quantum effects in photonic semiconductor devices are, therefore, an area of increasing interest. For short time scales, transient behaviors, and localized interactions, quantum transport solvers are needed to accurately model such behavior. Here, we employ a novel approach to solving the photon quantum Boltzmann equation utilizing a technique similar to particle Monte Carlo for acquiring the photon Wigner function, demonstrating its effectiveness at modeling quantum effects such as entanglement arising from the coupling of a waveguide to a ring resonator. Abstract

International audience; Hierarchical porosity sol-gel monoliths (HPMs) are of increasing interest for a wide variety of applications due to their outstanding microstructural (homogenous) and textural properties (high porosity and specific surface area) [1]. The high flow rate and low-pressure resultant compared to conventional materials, makes them suited for extraction and enrichment of analytes of interest in analytical techniques (HPLC, SPE, etc.) [2–4]. However, pure inorganic materials have rarely been considered for relevant applications in various omics fields such as metabolomics or proteomics [5].In the context, we report on: (i) a pure silica HPM based on a finely tuned bimodal porosity thoroughly controlled, (ii) coupled to a new way to a miniaturize shaping (iii) and its use as an innovative tool for sample preparation prior to glycan analysis by mass spectrometry, as a new source of disease biomarkers (glycomics analysis). The monolith synthesis will be presented with a special emphasize on its robustness and on the modulations of the bimodal porosity obtained ([0.1–5] μm and [1-25] nm). Beside microstructural and textural properties measurements (SEM, Hg porosimetry, etc.), the transport of small molecules through mesoporous network were evaluated by TEM tomography. Finally, the material was processed in different shapes and size (50 μm – 4 mm in diameter) demonstrating a high flexibility of our approach to produce devices dedicated to a biological analysis. The use of HPM for the analysis of both free and protein-bound oligosaccharides present in precious samples (human blood and milk) and their detection by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry will be presented as a proof of concept. Optimized experimental conditions, as well as material textures and shapes, enabled straightforward and time-efficient purification and MS- based glycomics analysis using minute quantities (few μl) of solvents but above all of complex human biofluids, thus outperforming common laboratory protocols.
