4. Flapping states of an el astically anchored wing in a uniform flow

Abstract

Linear stability analysis of an elastically anchored wing in a uniform flow is investigated both analytically and numerically. The analytical formulation explicitly takes into account the effect of the wake on the wing by means of Theodorsen's theory. Three different parameters non-trivially rule the observed dynamics: mass density ratio between wing and fluid, spring elastic constant and distance between the wing center of mass and the spring anchor point on the wing. We found relationships between these parameters which rule the transition between stable equilibrium and fluttering. The shape of the resulting marginal curve has been successfully verified by high Reynolds number direct numerical simulations. Our findings are of interest in applications related to energy harvesting by fluid-structure interaction, a problem which has recently attracted a great deal of attention. Abstract

The issue of the parameterization of small scale (``subgrid'') turbulence is addressed in the context of passive scalar transport. We focus on the Kraichnan advection model which lends itself to the analytical investigation of the closure problem. We derive systematically the dynamical equations which rule the evolution of the coarse-grained scalar field. At the lowest-order approximation in $l/r$, $l$ being the characteristic scale of the filter defining the coarse-grained scalar field and $r$ the inertial range separation, we recover the classical eddy-diffusivity parameterization of small scales. At the next-leading order a dynamical closure is obtained. The latter outperforms the classical model and is therefore a natural candidate for subgrid modelling of scalar transport in generic turbulent flows., Comment: 10 LaTex pages, 1 PS figure. Abstract

The Lorenz 1963 dynamical system is known to reduce in the steady state to a one-dimensional motion of a classical particle subjected to viscous damping in a past history-dependent potential field. If the potential field is substituted by a periodic function of the position, the resulting system shows a rich dynamics where (standard) diffusive behaviours, ballistc motions and trapping take place by varying the model control parameters. 7. Lorenz-like systems and classical dynamical equations with memory forcing: a new point of view for singling out the origin of chaos

Abstract

A novel view for the emergence of chaos in Lorenz-like systems is presented. For such purpose, the Lorenz problem is reformulated in a classical mechanical form and it turns out to be equivalent to the problem of a damped and forced one dimensional motion of a particle in a two-well potential, with a forcing term depending on the ``memory'' of the particle past motion. The dynamics of the original Lorenz system in the new particle phase space can then be rewritten in terms of an one-dimensional first-exit-time problem. The emergence of chaos turns out to be due to the discontinuous solutions of the transcendental equation ruling the time for the particle to cross the intermediate potential wall. Abstract

The mechanism responsible for the emergence of chaotic behavior has been identified analytically within a class of three-dimensional dynamical systems which generalize the well-known E.N. Lorenz 1963 system. The dynamics in the phase space has been reformulated in terms of a first-exit-time problem. Chaos emerges due to discontinuous solutions of a transcendental problem ruling the time for a particle to cross a potential wall. Abstract

Passive scalar transport in a spatially-extended background of roll convection is considered in the time-periodic regime. The latter arises due to the even oscillatory instability of the cell lateral boundary, here accounted for by sinusoidal oscillations of frequency $\omega$. By varying the latter parameter, the strength of anticorrelated regions of the velocity field can be controled and the conditions under which either an enhancement or a reduction of transport takes place can be created. Such two ubiquitous regimes are triggered by a small-scale(random) velocity field superimposed to the recirculating background. Abstract

The Old Quantum Mechanics actions discretization rules for periodic motions on the atomic scale (Bohr-Sommerfeld) have been suitably modified in order to account the gravitational field instead of the electrostatic one. The new rules are used to calculate a few mechanical quantities pertinent to the periodic motions of celestial bodies. Several values have been obtained which result in reasonable agreement with the corresponding experimental data. A gravitational dimensionless structure constant has been determined, using the data relative to the solar sistem, which allows to quantitatively account for phenomena on a much wider scale. Abstract

Beef burgers are meat preparations with easy perishability. To ensure a longer shelf-life, the Regulation EU 1129/11 allows the use of some additives. However, health-conscious consumers prefer products which do not contain synthetic substances. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Red Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) integration on Black Angus made burgers shelf life. Red beet was prepared as powder and added to meat mixture as the same or in water solution. The study was split into 2 trials to assess the extract activity also in burgers vacuum-packaged stored. Burgers were analysed (up to 9 days at 4°C) in terms of sensory properties, microbiological profile, pH, aw and lipid oxidation (TBARS). At the end of storage, treated samples showed the highest values of redness and the lowest content of malondialdehyde, probably due to antioxidant properties of red beet towards myoglobin and lipid oxidation processes. Moreover, results highlighted that Red Beetroot activities were dose-dependent and intensified if dissolved in water. The aw values did not appear to be conditioned by extract integrations, unlike the pH that was lower in treated samples than control ones. Microbiological analyses identified beet-root as a potential antimicrobial substance, especially in high concentration. In conclusion, Beta vulgaris extract could be pro-posed as natural compound exploitable in beef burgers to preserve qualities and extend their shelf-life.

Consiglio calorosamente di leggere il libro. Sono di 436 pagine, ma lo leggi d’un fiato, o forse in quattro o cinque fiati. Se anche togliessimo tutte le parti sul coronavirus e lasciassimo le altre potrebbe essere un’introduzione non solo al libertarismo, ma anche alle relazioni fra la dottrina cattolica e le posizioni liberali e libertarie. Questo spiega il fatto che la prima parte del libro, intitolata Il virus del politicamente corretto (considerazioni sociali) è un’analisi di centosessanta pagine che forma quasi un volumetto che sta in piedi da solo. Si tratta, infatti, di un’analisi di tutti i miti statalisti che preesistevano al virus e che sono stati riattivati dal virus. La seconda parte (Si suicidavano per paura di morire) comprende considerazioni economiche. La terza (La Cina e il suo virus ideologico) contiene considerazioni geopolitiche, con alcune profezie sul crollo del comunismo cinese. Infine il breve capitolo finale — Chiudete le porte a Cristo — è dedicato a considerazioni di tipo teologico. Quest’ultima parte – che volevo assolutamente ignorare, se non per altro per la presenza di Aldo Maria Valli, che è ben più titolato di me a parlarne –, ha fatto suonare dei campanellini autobiografici nella mia mente, perché l’autore parla dell’atteggiamento della pastorale della Chiesa rispetto ai temi della morte, della malattia e del diverso atteggiamento degli atei e dei credenti nei confronti della morte, il cui pensiero viene riattivato dalla pandemia.

Abstract

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) have been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Group 1 as carcinogenic to human, based on sufficient evidence in humans of an increased risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma and limited evidence for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However present findings on the association of PCB exposure and NHL are still controversial. This study examined the relationship between PCB serum levels and risk of NHL in a Northern Italy area (Brescia province), where a chemical factory produced PCBs from 1938 to 1984, causing human contamination. A case–control study of 215 NHL patients and 215 control subjects was conducted. Cases and controls were assayed for serum levels of 33 PCB congeners. No associations were found between risk of NHL and serum levels of total PCBs (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.25–1.04 for highest vs lowest quartile) or specific PCB congeners. The study confirmed a strong association of NHL with HCV infection (OR = 3.60; 95% CI: 1.30–10.02). This case-control study does not support the hypothesis of an association between current serum levels of PCBs and NHL development in the general population.

Abstract

Invasive diagnostics and minor surgical procedures with deep sedation on pediatric patients, such as fibroscopic examination, have increased over the past decade. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness and safety of an anesthesiological technique, based on the use of midazolam and ketamine, conducted in spontaneous breathing on a population of pediatric patients with suspected tracheobronchial pathologies. Pediatric patients from birth to 18 years old who underwent sedation diagnostic fibroscopy between April 2018 and March 2019, were enrolled. The anesthesiological technique provided was the intravenous administration of midazolam 0.2 mg/kg and ketamine 2 mg/kg in spontaneous breathing using a face mask with support of O2 and air. Vital signs such as Heart rate (HR), Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure (PAS and PAD) and Arterial oxygen saturation were recorded at the beginning of the procedure, 10 minutes and 30 minutes from the start. Other parameter evaluated were patient’s level of consciousness, quality of the procedure, major and minor complications, adequate recovery of the waking state. Sixteen patients were enrolled, 12 males and 4 females aged between 2 days of life and 7 years. Laryngomalacia tracheomalacia, tracheoesophageal fistula, and congenital airway malformations were the most frequent diseases. As for vital signs: the HR has gone from an average value of 133.4 ± 16.26 bpm at T0 to an average value of 129.3 ± 16.55 bpm at T10 and 133.7 ± 17.35 bpm at T30; PAS and PAD had not significant variations. Among drugs available for the fibroscopic examinations, the combined use of intravenous midazolam 0.2 mg/kg and ketamine 2 mg/kg is safe and well tolerated, reducing the anxiety associated with the examination, without major complications. Abstract

This study examined the relationship between PCB plasma levels and risk of CMM adjusting for sun sensitivity and sun exposure in a province of Northern Italy (Brescia), where a chemical factory produced PCBs from 1938 to 1984 causing human contamination. A case–control study of 205 CMM patients and 205 control subjects was conducted. Cases and controls were assayed for plasma levels of 33 PCB congeners. No associations was found between risk of CMM and plasma levels of total PCB (OR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.34–1.96 for highest vs lowest quartile) or specific congeners. The study confirmed the association with light skin colour (OR = 3.00; 95% CI: 1.91–4.73), cumulative lifetime UV exposure (OR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.35–4.85) and high level of education (OR = 1.45; 95% CI: 1.03–2.05). This case-control study does not support the hypothesis of an association between current plasma levels of PCBs and CMM development in the general population. Abstract

Background and purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the neurological manifestations in a series of consecutive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-positive patients, comparing their frequency with a population hospitalized in the same period for flu/respiratory symptoms, finally not related to SARS-CoV-2. Methods: Patients with flu/respiratory symptoms admitted to Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli hospital from 14 March 2020 to 20 April 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. The frequency of neurological manifestations of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection was compared with a control group. Results: In all, 213 patients were found to be positive for SARS-CoV-2, after reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction on nasal or throat swabs, whilst 218 patients were found to be negative and were used as a control group. Regarding central nervous system manifestations, in SARS-CoV-2-positive patients a higher frequency of headache, hyposmia and encephalopathy always related to systemic conditions (fever or hypoxia) was observed. Furthermore, muscular involvement was more frequent in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions: Patients with COVID-19 commonly have neurological manifestations but only hyposmia and muscle involvement seem more frequent compared with other flu diseases.

Abstract

The use of satellite data to estimate solar irradiance at ground level represents a valid alternative to ground measurements of solar radiation. This paper continues the analysis and evaluation, started in a previous paper, of the best known methods for calculating solar irradiance at the earth's surface using geostationary satellite data. In the previous paper, we examined and compared the so-called statistical models. Now we will consider the physical models and point out the differences between them. Finally, a summary will be made of the assessments and comparisons carried out on the methods described.

Abstract

The use of satellite data to estimate solar irradiance at ground level represents a valid alternative to ground measurements of solar radiation. The best known methods of estimating the solar irradiance at the earth's surface using geostationary satellite data are reviewed. The models may be classified into statistical and physical models, depending on the approach used to treat the interaction between solar radiation and atmosphere. The main hypotheses and algorithms used in four statistical models are extensively presented and discussed. The differences between these methods are pointed out. Physical models will be examined in a second paper. This second paper will include various assessments regarding the performances of the described methods and summaries of comparisons between the different models.

Abstract

Dimensionless correlations for an easy prediction of the hardened depth in electron and laser beam heating treatments are derived from two analytical thermal models. Electron beam heat treating is carried out on 9Cr-2Mo and C40 steels. Effects of the translation speed and the spot dimensions were taken into account. The fairly good agreement between analytical and experimental data suggests that the proposed correlations can be used in applications.

Abstract

A procedure is presented which can be used to create, from many years of available past weather data, a Reference Year consisting in 8760 hourly values of a few chosen meteorological quantities. Such 'year' corresponds to a 'typical' year for the considered locality, regarding both the occurrence and the persistence of different meteorological situations, in all months. This approach is a modification of the procedure used in the production of Test Reference Years or of Design Reference Years. In this approach, the frequency distributions relative to single months in the database are compared with the long-term frequency distribution of all the months 'with the same name.' Furthermore, the correlation between subsequent daily values is taken into account.

Abstract

High temperature metallurgical processes may significantly contribute to the release of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs) into the environment. Aim of this study was to evaluate the exposure to PCDDs, PCDFs, dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) and non dioxin-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs) in a sample of 300 workers of metallurgical plants operating in the Brescia area and in a control group of 113 men. Serum samples were grouped in pools of 10 and analyzed for their concentration of PCDDs and PCDFs, DL- and NDL-PCBs. Metallurgical workers show serum concentrations of NDL-PCBs similar to those observed in non-occupationally exposed living in Brescia, except in the case of some congeners, such as PCBs 28, 52, 101 which result to be significantly higher in metallurgical workers. Their concentrations range of "dioxins" was of 32.5 - 84.8 pgTEQ g(-1) lb. No significant difference was found between metallurgical workers and the control group on the whole, but the difference became significant when comparing metallurgical workers with the group of the 47 subjects living in remote non industrialised areas. In conclusion, concentrations of total PCBs observed in metallurgy workers are comparable with those observed in the control group, with the exception of a few, more volatile, congeners which resulted to be higher in metallurgy workers. Concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs showed a range of values similar to that observed in the general population of Brescia not professionally exposed. However, concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs observed in subjects resident in "remote" areas were significantly lower than those assessed in metallurgy workers and subjects living in the town of Brescia. On the whole, men living in the town of Brescia show levels of PCBs, PCDDs and PCDFs higher than those observed in other groups of the Italian general population, this reflecting the intense industrial activity of the town.

Abstract

Flat epithelial atypia (FEA) may represent the earliest precursor of low-grade breast cancer and often coexists with more advanced atypical proliferative breast lesions such as atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and lobular intraepithelial neoplasia (LIN). The present study aims to investigate the association between morphological parameters of FEA and presence of malignancy at surgical excision (SE) and the clinical significance of the association of FEA with ADH and/or LIN. This study included 589 cases of stereotactic 11-gauge vacuum-assisted needle core biopsy (VANCB), reporting a diagnosis of FEA, ADH or LIN with subsequent SE from 14 pathology departments in Italy. Available slides were reviewed, with 114 (19.4 %) showing a malignant outcome at SE. Among the 190 cases of pure FEA, no statistically significant association emerged between clinical–pathological parameters of FEA and risk of malignancy. Logistic regression analyses showed an increased risk of malignancy according to the extension of ADH among the 275 cases of FEA associated with ADH (p = 0.004) and among the 34 cases of FEA associated with ADH and LIN (p = 0.02). In the whole series, a statistically significant increased malignancy risk emerged according to mammographic R1–R3/R4–R5 categories (OR = 1.56; p = 0.04), extension (OR = 1.24; p = 0.04) and grade (OR = 1.94; p = 0.004) of cytological atypia of FEA. The presence of ADH was associated with an increased malignancy risk (OR = 2.85; p < 0.0001). Our data confirm the frequent association of FEA with ADH and/or LIN. A diagnosis of pure FEA on VANCB carries a 9.5 % risk of concurrent malignancy and thus warrants follow-up excision because none of the clinical–pathological parameters predicts which cases will present carcinoma on SE.

Abstract

The logical problem of verisimilitude amounts to the preliminary definition of an appropriate notion of verisimilitude, allowing for a comparison of any two hypotheses with regards to their closeness to the truth. The epistemic problem of verisimilitude, on the other hand, amounts to the definition of an appropriate notion of expected verisimilitude by which the estimated closeness to the truth of any two hypotheses could be compared on the basis of the available data. We will outline the formal background to briefly address both problems in turn, introducing the basic traits of a theory of verisimilitude and expected verisimilitude for hypotheses expressed in a propositional language. Then, we will come back to the conjunction paradox and provide a novel verisimilitudinarian analysis of the Linda’s story and the paradox of conjunction.

Abstract

Percutaneous core biopsy (CB) has been introduced to increase the ability of accurately diagnosing breast malignancies without the need of resorting to surgery. Compared to conventional automated 14 gauge needle core biopsy (NCB), vacuum-assisted needle core biopsy (VANCB) allows obtaining larger specimens and has recognized advantages particularly when the radiological pattern is represented by microcalcifications. Regardless of technical improvements, a small percentage of percutaneous CBs performed to detect breast lesions are still classified, according to European and UK guidelines, in the borderline B3 category, including a group of heterogeneous lesions with uncertain malignant potential. We aimed to assess the prevalence and positive predictive values (PPV) on surgical excision (SE) of B3 category (overall and by sub-categories) in a large series of non-palpable breast lesions assessed through VANCB, also comparison with published data on CB. Overall, 26,165 consecutive stereotactic VANCB were identified in 22 Italian centres: 3107 (11.9%) were classified as B3, of which 1644 (54.2%) proceeded to SE to establish a definitive histological diagnosis of breast pathology. Due to a high proportion of microcalcifications as main radiological pattern, the overall PPV was 21.2% (range 10.6%-27.3% for different B3 subtypes), somewhat lower than the average value (24.5%) from published studies (range 9.9%-35.1%). Our study, to date the largest series of B3 with definitive histological assessment on SE, suggests that B3 lesions should be referred for SE even if VANCB is more accurate than NCB in the diagnostic process of non-palpable, sonographically invisible breast lesions.
