We describe the design, performance and scientific objectives of the NASA-funded ALICE instrument aboard the ESA Rosetta asteroid flyby/comet rendezvous mission. ALICE is a lightweight, low-power, and low-cost imaging spectrograph optimized for cometary far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy. It will be the first UV spectrograph to study a comet at close range. It is designed to obtain spatially-resolved spectra of Rosetta mission targets in the 700-2050 A spectral band with a spectral resolution between 8 A and 12 A for extended sources that fill its ~0.05 deg x 6.0 deg field-of-view. ALICE employs an off-axis telescope feeding a 0.15-m normal incidence Rowland circle spectrograph with a concave holographic reflection grating. The imaging microchannel plate detector utilizes dual solar-blind opaque photocathodes (KBr and CsI) and employs a 2 D delay-line readout array. The instrument is controlled by an internal microprocessor. During the prime Rosetta mission, ALICE will characterize comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko's coma, its nucleus, and the nucleus/coma coupling; during cruise to the comet, ALICE will make observations of the mission's two asteroid flyby targets and of Mars, its moons, and of Earth's moon. ALICE has already successfully completed the in-flight commissioning phase and is operating normally in flight. It has been characterized in flight with stellar flux calibrations, observations of the Moon during the first Earth fly-by, and observations of comet Linear T7 in 2004 and comet 9P/Tempel 1 during the 2005 Deep Impact comet-collision observing campaign, Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

On 30.14 March 1997 we observed the EUV spectrum of the bright comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at the time of its perihelion, using our EUVS sounding rocket telescope/spectrometer. The spectra reveal the presence H Ly beta, O+, and, most notably, Argon. Modelling of the retrieved Ar production rates indicates that comet Hale-Bopp is enriched in Ar relative to cosmogonic expectations. This in turn indicates that Hale-Bopp's deep interior has never been exposed to the 35-40 K temperatures necessary to deplete the comet's primordial argon supply., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. We investigate Vesta's UV lightcurve and spectral reversal. We model the UV spectra using laboratory spectra of howardite and diogenite meteorites, as well as suing candidate materials based on knowledge of Vesta's composition from visible and near-infrared spectroscopy.

A reanalysis of IUE spectra of Vesta indicates longitudinal variations in a UV absorption feature that may be related to compositional and/or topographic variations, as revealed by recent HST maps.

A visible lightcurve of Comet Levy obtained with the IUE Fine Error Sensor has revealed short-term coma variability. A production-rate source function is derivable from these data which implies a nucleus exhibiting hemispherically asymmetric activity. The ratio of gas-to-dust-production rates is also noted to exhibit asymmetry. The low dust-outflow velocity derived from observations, at about 200 m/sec, indicates a distribution that is rich in large, 3-10 micron particles.

Using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observatory, the first vacuum UV spectrum of Oberon was obtained. The data contain useful information in the spectral range 2650-3200 A. Oberon's UV geometric albedo is found to be flat and essentially featureless with an average value of p(UV) = 0.19 + or - 0.025, and making it possible to extend Oberon's phase curve into the opposite region.

IUE data on the UV and visible coma emissions of the comets Bradfield, P/Tempel 2, Wilson, and P/Halley, are presently compared with the visual lightcurves from magnitudes reported in the IAU circulars to consider the temporal evolution of these comets. While the water-production rates obtainable from visual magnitudes on the basis of Newburn's (1984) method are consistent with OH-derived rates to first order, they are sometimes either displaced or unable to exhibit the same pre/postperihelion asymmetry. The best agreement is obtained for the relatively dust-free Comet P/Tempel 2. IUE Fine Error Sensor lightcurves are generally in agreement with curves based on total visual magnitude.

Comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf (1989c) was observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) on several dates from 27 July 1989 through 5 August 1989; comet Okazaki-Levy-Rudenko (1989r) was observed in low dispersion with IUE on 2 and 22 December 1989. The water production rates for P/Brorsen-Metcalf were derived from OH measurements using the vectorial model of Festou (1981). Included also are the water production rates for Okazaki-Levy-Rudenko. Two estimates of the water production rate from the O I emission around 1304 A(octogons) are included. The ultraviolet continuum was not reliably measurable in comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf in most of the spectra, but Afp is approximately 30 cm for 2 August. For the comet Okazaki-Levy-Rudenko, an Afp = 50 cm was derived for 22 December. Both comets have very little dust compared to other recently observed comets. The ratio of CS to water production rates are presented. Relative to water, both comets had less CS than P/Halley in the same range of heliocentric distances. The CS production rates were obtained from a Haser model, assuming a short-lived parent (CS2). Because the dynamic range of the IUE spectrographs are limited, not all species can be measured in each spectrum. The P/Brorsen-Metcalf spectra from 31 July and 3 August were obtained from the NSSDC Archives. Due to the observing technique used for these spectra, the exposure time and hence, the brightnesses and derived quantities have a small uncertainty associated with them.

Observations of comet Austin (1989c1) were made using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite on December 22, 1989 (preperihelion) and on nine dates between 7 and 24 May, 1990 (postperihelion). A summary of observation dates and parameters is given. The ultraviolet spectrum is characteristic of that of non-dusty comets. Some preliminary results are presented for OH and CS production rates and dust-reflected solar continuum emission based upon the long wavelength, low resolution mode spectra; photometry using the IUE Fine Error Sensor; a detection of the CO fourth positive system in the short wavelength, low dispersion spectra; and an upper limit on S2.

IUE observations of Comet Wilson from September 1986 to November 1987, through perihelion, allow a comparison to be conducted between this 'new' comet and the highly evolved P/Halley, at comparable heliocentric distances. The temporal decreases of both OH and dust in Comet Wilson near perihelion were monotonic and slow, by contrast to Comet Halley's rapid fluctuations. Despite these differences, relative gas abundances were similar within a factor of about 2 for comparable heliocentric and geocentric distances; this indicates that P/Halley's in situ gas measurements may be typical of comets generally.

Two of the main components of the atmosphere of Io, neutral oxygen and sulfur, were detected with the IUE. Four observations yield brightnesses that are similar, regardless of whether the upstream or the downstream sides of the torus plasma flow around Io is observed. A simple model requires the emissions to be produced by the interaction of O and S columns in the exospheric range with 2 eV electrons. Cooling of the 5 eV torus electrons is required prior to their interaction with the atmosphere of Io. Inconsistencies in the characteristics of the spectra that cannot be accounted for in this model require further analysis with improved atomic data. The Io plasma torus was monitored with the IUE. The long-term stability of the warm torus is established. The observed brightnesses were analyzed using a model of the torus, and variations of less than 30 percent in the composition are observed, the quantitative results being model dependent.

IUE spectra have shown several O I and S I emissions near Io. The optical thickness of the S I 1814 A multiplet indicates that the S column density is greater than about 2 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm. The presence of an S I 1479 A feature suggests that electron collisions with SO2 could be a major source of the emissions. It is likely that particle excitation in the denser collision-dominated part of the atmosphere is also responsible for a substantial part of the observed emissions.

Observations of comets obtained with the IUE satellite since its launch in 1978 are reviewed. The status of UV observation of comets prior to IUE is discussed, and particular attention is given to low-resolution UV spectroscopy of cometary comae, the detection of new species in the UV emission, high-dispersion spectroscopy, spatial mapping of the emissions, abundance determinations, and short-term variability. Diagrams, graphs, sample spectra, and tables of numerical data are provided.

Spectroscopic data from the IUE are reported which show a strong correlation between a visible outburst from the near-nuclear region of comet Halley on 18.8 March 1986 and the sudden appearance of a large column abundance of CO2(+) ions in the tail. These data suggest that CO2 may play a significant role in the outburst process. This outburst may have been the source of the detached clumps of CO(+) emission recorded by ground-based observers on 19 and 20 March, 1986.

The UV spectrum of comet P/Halley (1982 i) was monitored with the IUE at regular time intervals. A complete characterization of the UV spectrum of the comet was obtained to derive coma abundances and to study the light emission mechanisms of the observed species. The Fine Error Sensor (FES) camera of the IUE was used to investigate the coma brightness variability on short time scales. Spectroscopic observations as well as FES measurements show that the comet nucleus activity was highly variable.

The observations of comet Halley from International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite from March 9 to 16, 1986 allow a comprehensive study of gas and dust production by comet in the week during which the fleet of six spacecraft from four space agencies encountered the comet. The gaseous output of the nucleus was found to vary over timescales of the order of one or two hours. The Vega 2 probe crossed Halley's coma at the time of, or shortly after, the onset of a strong outburst. The Giotto spacecraft performed its measurements while the cometary nucleus was near a minimum of activity. The ultraviolet spectrum of comet Halley differs from that of other comets observed by the IUE satellite in that the continuum emission is very strong relative to the gaseous emissions, and the CO2(+) violet bands, if present, are weak. The rate of water production was estimated to be 5.6 x 10 to the 29th and 5.2 x 10 to the 29th molecules per second at the time of the Vega 2 and Giotto encounters, respectively, while atomic carbon was a few percent and CO about 10-20 percent of these values.

The short wavelength camera of the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to measure S II 1256, S III 1199, semiforbidden S III 1729, and semiforbidden S IV 1406 emission from the high-temperature region of the Io plasma torus. Observations over a period of five years (1979-1984) indicate that the Io plasma parameters have relatively small variations, particularly in the case of the mixing ratio for the dominant constituent S(++), and electron temperature. A simple three-dimensional model of the plasma torus was used to obtain the ion mixing ratios and the plasma density for each observation. The results are compared with Voyager 1 data for mixing ratio (ion density divided by electron density); ionization balance; and plasma density. The results of the comparison are discussed in detail.

The first direct evidence for the onset of sublimation of a comet nucleus is reported. Emission due to CN observed in spectra of the comet P/Halley provides evidence for the development of the gas coma. Broad-band photometric observations of the comet indicate that the dust coma developed near a preperihelion heliocentric distance r of about 6 AU. Rates of gas production and brightening for the comet have been derived at r of 4-6 AU. The mean preperihelion nuclear magnitude derived for the comet was used to calculate an effective radius of the nucleus, which for plausible values of the geometric albedo lies in the range 1-4 km.

A comparison of the ultraviolet spectrum of periodic Comet Encke (1980 XI), recorded by the IUE between October 24, and November 5, 1980 with similar spectra, of short- and long-period comets, shows the gaseous composition of P/Encke to be nearly identical to that of the other comets observed by the IUE. If P/Encke is indeed the remains of a once-giant comet, this similarity implies a homogeneous radial structure for the cometary ice nucleus. The OH brightness distribution shows a spatial variation similar to the visible fan-shaped image of the comet, suggestive of a nonuniform distribution of volatile ices on the surface of the nucleus. The total derived water production rate appears to be a factor of 5 higher than that derived from HI Lyman-alpha observations made during the 1970 apparition, and shows a variation with heliocentric distance (r) as r to the -3.3 power over the range 0.81 to 1.02 AU.

Ultraviolet spectra of comet Austin (1982) obtained in July 1982 at heliocentric distances ranging from 1.10 to 0.81 AU preperihelion with the IUE reveal that the comet is very similar in chemical composition and appearance to comet Bradfield (1979X). In addition, the derived H2O production rate is found to vary with heliocentric distance as r to the -3.6, similar to the r to the -3.7 behavior found for comet Bradfield. It is pointed out, however, that the limited sample rate precludes the observation of the short-term variations which could be produced by a rotating nonuniform cometary nucleus.

The Halley Optical Probe Experiment (HOPE) will furnish in situ photopolarimetric data on Comet Halley's coma dust cloud and atmosphere. The optical probe concept involves measurements of the polarized spectral radiance in the direction of motion at two points on the spacecraft trajectory, parallel to the direction of motion; their difference is the spatial derivative of the radiance along the line-of-sight, as well as of the light scattered by dust or emitted by gas in a tube along the trajectory. HOPE is proposed for the Giotto spacecraft's flyby of Comet Halley.

A spectrum of a much higher quality than previously available has been obtained which shows emission features arising from S(+), S(++), S(+++), and an upper limit for O(++). The well-defined splitting of the 1729 A feature is seen as confirming its tentative identification as semiforbidden S III 5S2(0)-3P2,1. The lower contamination of S III 1199 A by H I 1216 A than in most previous IUE spectra of the Io torus makes possible an estimate of the S III 1729 A collision strength. The variation of these features with temperature and their possible presence in spectra of nebulae are discussed.

Occultation of the star Delta-Scorpii by Saturn as recorded by the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer yields the value of the exospheric temperature in the equatorial region to be 800 (+150, -120) K at an altitude of 1540 km above the 1-bar atmospheric pressure level; the H2-density at 1540 km is determined to be 5 (+3.6, -1.8) x 10 to the 9th per cu cm. Temperature gradient in the thermosphere is found to be 1.25 (+0.05, -0.07) K/km. Methane volume mixing ratio at 965 km above the 1-bar pressure level is determined to be 0.00015.

It is pointed out that the intensity of the Lyman-alpha emission is a good indicator of the principal aeronomical processes on the major planets. The high-resolution ultraviolet spectrometer aboard the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory Copernicus was used in 1980 April and May to detect the Jovian Lyman-alpha emission by spectroscopically discriminating it from other Doppler shifted Lyman-alpha emissions such as those of the geocorona, and the interplanetary medium. Taking into consideration the reported emission data, it appears that an unusually large energy input due to the particle precipitation in the auroral region must have been responsible for the large observed Lyman-alpha intensity during the Voyager encounter. At most other times, the observed Jovian Lyman-alpha intensity can be explained, within the range of statistical uncertainty, by a model that takes into consideration the solar EUV flux, the solar Lyman-alpha flux, the high exospheric temperature, and the eddy diffusion coefficient without energy input from the auroral sources.

Eight comets were observed with the IUE at various-heliocentric and geocentric distances. Their UV spectra are remarkably similar despite the large differences in the dust to gas ratios. Since all the dominant atomic species (except N) radicals and ions of the coma are detected in this spectral region, the total gaseous output of the nucleus can be estimated. The abundance of the carbon atom-bearing species is still not very well known and there are indications that the CO content of the coma could vary from comet to comet.

Eight comets are studied with the International Ultraviolet Explorer spectrographs. The existence of the CO2(plus) ion in a comet is confirmed through the presence of the 2890 A doublet in at least three of these objects. Spatial and spectral resolution obtained in comets Bradfield (1979 X) and Seargent (1978 XV) permit a discussion of the production mechanisms of this ion. The spectra reveal new ionic features in the 3100-3400 A range, which are attributed to resonance fluorescence of the Fox-Duffendack-Barker system of the CO2(plus) ion and, near 3350 A, to the OH(plus) ion.

Whipple (1950, 1951) has proposed that water might be the dominant volatile constituent of the cometary nucleus. The considered investigation is concerned with the clues which observations of the cometary coma provide regarding the parents of the dominant observed coma species. In the early part of 1980, comet Bradfield (1979 X) was observed with the aid of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). These measurements are the first which provide a basis for a comprehensive study of all three water dissociation products, H, O, and OH, simultaneously. The IUE observations of comet Bradfield are compared with the predictions derived from an H2O model. The obtained results indicate that the observed brightnesses of H, O, and OH are certainly consistent with a common water source for all three species.

High spatial resolution observations of comet Bradfield (1979X) with the IUE spectrograph have made it possible to tentatively identify a feature at 2972 A as the 1S-3P forbidden transition of oxygen atoms. It is shown here that the most likely source of this emission is the photodissociation of water molecules, mainly by solar Lyman-alpha photons, but that a significant contribution of CO2 cannot be excluded.

Ultraviolet spectra of seven comets taken with the same instrument are given. The comets P/Encke (1980), P/Tuttle (1980 h), P/Stephan-Oterma (1980 g), and Meier (1980 q) were observed in November and December 1980 with the IUE satellite, and comets P/Borrelly (1980 i) and Panther (1980 u) were observed with the IUE on March 6, 1981. The spectra of these comets are compared with one another, as well as with comet Bradfield (1978 X), which was extensively studied earlier in 1980 with the IUE. To simplify the interpretation of the data and to minimize the dependence upon a specific model, the spectra are compared at approximately the same value of heliocentric distance whenever possible. Effects arising from heliocentric velocity, geocentric distance, and optical depth are also discussed. All of the cometary spectra are found to be remarkably similar, suggesting that these comets may have a common composition and origin.
