A 6.8 earthquake that hit Japan caused spillage of radioactive water at one of the nuclear power plants owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co. The spillage, estimated to be 1,140 liters, came from a pool storing spent fuel assemblies. The water went into a sump that then emptied it into the Sea of Japan. The incident has raised concerns over safety.

President George W. Bush of the United States has announced 'cellulosic ethanol' as a panacea to the use of gasoline and petroleum imports. Ethanol is to be available at gas pumps in six years and could supply one third of gasoline needed by Americans. The energy policy is controversial as financing by the government for new distribution and vehicle technology is to be $150 million and there is a question of taxation for price viability at the gas pumps.

The United States government in response to rising oil prices and Hurricane Katrina has released petroleum from government reserves to be sold to consumers. Gasoline prices are forecast to stay above three dollars per gallon.
