Simple Summary: Staphylococcus aureus is a human and animal pathogen that can cause severe mastitis in sheep. The severity of this disease is influenced by several factors, among which the presence of virulence genes in the bacterium. In the present study, 110 strains, isolated from the milk of sheep with clinical mastitis south of Tuscany, Italy, and with subclinical mastitis in a farm in the same region, were investigated for enterotoxin and hemolysin genes' presence through molecular analysis. The distribution of the profiles on this territory was analyzed. Twenty different profiles were found, but 43.64% of the tested strains showed the same profile. Considering the enterotoxin genes, four profiles were identified while using hemolysin genes' presence, 12 genes patterns were found. Several different strains were detected in the farm with subclinical mastitis. Spatial analysis of the overall isolated strains did not show a specific distribution. However, the study highlights the importance of identifying and analyzing virulence genes of this bacterium involved in dairy sheep mastitis, and the presence of different strains in the same farm. Staphylococcus aureus is well known to be the primary causal agent of clinical or subclinical mastitis in dairy sheep. The production of virulence factors allows S. aureus strains to cause mastitis. In the present study, 96 strains isolated from dairy sheep farms used for the production of autologous vaccines were tested for enterotoxin and hemolysin genes by PCR. In addition, 14 strains isolated from half udders of ewes with subclinical mastitis belonging to a single farm were also tested for the same genes. The phylogenetic trees were constructed, and spatial analysis was performed. Overall, 20 gene patterns were identified, but 43.64% of the tested strains showed the same profile (sec+, sel+, hla+, hld+, hlgAC+). Considering only the enterotoxin genes, four profiles were identified while the evaluation of the hemolysin genes revealed the presence of 12 gene patterns. In the farm with subclinical mastitis, six gene profiles were found. Spatial analysis of the isolated strains and their virulence genes did not show a specific pattern. The present study highlights the importance of identifying and analyzing virulence genes of S. aureus strains involved in dairy sheep mastitis, and the presence of different strains in the same farm. Simple Summary: One male adult crested porcupine was found moribund in the province of Siena (Tuscany, Central Italy), and died soon after being recovered by a wildlife rescue service. At necropsy, a rounded nodule was noted on the surface of the heart. Differential diagnoses included abscess, systemic tuberculosis, parasitic cyst, and neoplasia. Histology was performed on the lesion, revealing a cystic formation in the epicardium. The cyst was lined by stratified squamous epithelium and was filled with lamellar keratin without hair shafts. The lesion was diagnosed as an epicardial epidermoid cyst (EC). EC are most commonly found in the skin, both in human and animal patients, although rarely they can occur in various internal organs. However, cardiac EC has not been reported before in animals. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of EC in a wild animal species. The crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) is present in central Italy with an estimated population of 1800 individuals. Despite the local abundance, little data are available on the diseases affecting free-ranging individuals. We describe a case of an epidermoid cyst (EC) in a male adult porcupine found in the municipality of Sovicille, province of Siena (Tuscany). At necropsy, a firm rounded nodule was noted on the left ventricle wall. Histological examination revealed a cystic formation lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The cyst was filled with lamellar keratin, while hair shafts were not present. The adjacent epicardium was infiltrated by lymphoplasmacytic cells in reaction to the rupture of the cyst with the spilling of keratinaceous debris. The lesion was diagnosed as a ruptured epicardial epidermoid cyst. EC are most commonly found in the skin, both in human and animal patients, though infrequently, they can occur in any internal organ. Cardiac EC has not been reported in domestic animals, and this is the first report of EC in a wild animal species. Clinical veterinarians should consider the possibility of similar cardiac lesions in captive subjects since the long lifespan of these rodents could allow the growth of the cyst with the compression of the adjacent tissues. Simple Summary: In Italy, buffalo milk is mainly transformed into 'Mozzarella di Bufala Campana', a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheese. A quick method for predicting the coagulation properties of the milk before cheese production could enhance the efficiency of the industry. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the potential use of mid-infrared spectroscopy to predict milk coagulation traits in bulk milk from Mediterranean Italian buffaloes. A total of 1736 bulk milk samples from 55 farms in central Italy were analyzed. Prediction models using mid-infrared spectroscopy were built with a modified partial least-squares regression using an external validation dataset. The best prediction model was obtained for curd firmness, but it was still inaccurate enough to replace traditional methods. This study evaluated the potential use of mid-infrared spectroscopy to predict milk coagulation traits in bulk milk from Mediterranean Italian buffaloes. A total of 1736 bulk milk samples from 55 farms in central Italy were collected during the official milk quality testing system. The prediction models were developed based on modified partial least-squares regression with 75% of the samples and validated with the remaining samples. All bulk milk samples coagulated between 7.37 and 29.45 min. Average values for milk coagulation traits in the calibration set were 17.71 min, 3.29 min, and 38.83 mm for rennet coagulation time, curd firming time, and curd firmness, respectively. The validation set included samples with similar mean and standard deviation for each trait. The prediction models showed the greatest coefficient of determination of external validation (0.57) and the ratio of prediction to deviation (1.52) for curd firmness. Similar fitting statistics of the prediction models were obtained for rennet coagulation time and curd firming time. In conclusion, the prediction models for all three coagulation traits were below the threshold to consider the prediction models adequate even for rough screening of the samples. Prevalence and risk factors of Leishmania infantum, Dirofilaria spp. and other potentially zoonotic or canine-specific endoparasite infections were assessed in 639 kennel dogs from central Italy. To this end, individual blood and fecal samples were examined using parasitological, immunological and molecular techniques. The presence of compatible clinical pictures, as well as age and gender were considered as putative risks factors. To evaluate risk factors, multivariable analysis with logistic regression and univariable analysis with a Chi square test and a Fischer’s exact test were performed. Overall, 52.6% of dogs (95% CI 48.6-56.5) were found positive, while 39.6% of dogs (95% CI 35.8-43.5) were infected by potentially zoonotic species. Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria repens showed prevalences of 2.5% (95% CI 1.5-4.1) and 2.8% (95% CI 1.7-4.5), respectively. The prevalence of cardiorespiratory parasites was 7.8% (95% CI 5.9-10.3) and included the species Angiostrongylus vasorum, Eucoleus aerophilus, Eucoleus boehmi and D. immitis; the latter showed a prevalence of 0.2% (95% CI 0.001-1). Intestinal parasites were significantly prevalent (38.8%, 95% CI 35-42.7) and they consisted mainly of species of major zoonotic concern, including ancylostomatids, Toxocara canis, Giardia duodenalis, Dipylidium caninum, Taeniidae, Strongyloides stercoralis and Cryptosporidium parvum. Endoparasites were significantly prevalent in clinically suspected dogs. Leishmania infantum and cardiorespiratory nematodes were prevalent in older dogs, while intestinal parasites were prevalent in younger dogs. Results show high dog and public health risks in kennels in central Italy, and suggest the need for more effective control measures.

An unusual mortality event involving cetaceans, mainly striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba (Meyen, 1833), occurred along the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of Italy during the first 3 mo of 2013. Based on post-mortem analyses carried out according to body condition on 66 dolphins (54% of stranded animals), several hypotheses to explain the causes of this mortality event were proposed. Although no definitive conclusions can be drawn, dolphin morbillivirus was deemed the most likely cause, although other infectious agents (including Photobacterium damselae damselae and herpesvirus) or environmental factors may also have contributed to this recent mortality event.

An organic grazing cattle herd in Tuscany (Italy) was monitored for parasites between 2002 and 2006. Every two to three months, faecal samples from cattle of different breeds and age were collected and examined for endoparasites, using both qualitative and quantitative parasitological techniques. Several environmental parameters were monitored and data on biodiversity and field margin biodiversity of grazing areas were also collected. All data were geo-referenced and plotted on a vectorial map using geographic information systems (GIS) software. Soil was classified as silt and clay/sand. The hydraulic drainage was poor and water pooling was observed frequently. The biodiversity of field margins was relatively high. Cattle were infected by coccidia, gastrointestinal nematodes, cestodes and trematodes. Prevalence and intensity of infestations were highly variable. In most cases, this variability was related to cattle breed, age, season and meteorological data. The Pisana breed was most commonly infected by Fasciola hepatica and Paramphistomidae. These infestations were associated with more frequent flooding and water pooling in the areas grazed by this breed.
