Abstract

Designing software compatible with cloud-based Microservice Architectures (MSAs) is vital due to the performance, scalability, and availability limitations. As the complexity of a system increases, it is subject to deprecation, difficulties in making updates, and risks in introducing defects when making changes. Microservices are small, loosely coupled, highly cohesive units that interact to provide system functionalities. 2. Edge-Mapping of Service Function Trees for Sensor Event Processing

Abstract

Fog computing offers increased performance and efficiency for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications through distributed data processing in nearby proximity to sensors. Given resource constraints and their contentious use in IoT networks, current strategies strive to optimise which data processing tasks should be selected to run on fog devices. In this paper, we advance a more effective data processing architecture for optimisation purposes. Specifically, we consider the distinct functions of sensor data streaming, multi-stream data aggregation and event handling, required by IoT applications for identifying actionable events. We retrofit this event processing pipeline into a logical architecture, structured as a service function tree (SFT), comprising service function chains. We present a novel algorithm for mapping the SFT into a fog network topology in which nodes selected to process SFT functions (microservices) have the requisite resource capacity and network speed to meet their event processing deadlines. We used simulations to validate the algorithm's effectiveness in finding a successful SFT mapping to a physical network. Overall, our approach overcomes the bottlenecks of single service placement strategies for fog computing through composite service placements of SFTs., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. This paper presents the concept of a service colony and its characteristics. A service colony is a novel architectural style for developing a software system as a group of autonomous software services co-operating to fulfill the objectives of the system. Each inhabitant service in the colony implements a specific system functionality, collaborates with the other services, and makes proactive decisions that impact its performance and interaction patterns with other inhabitants. 6. Securing Manufacturing Using Blockchain

Abstract

Due to the rise of Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) cyber-attacks in the recent decade, various security frameworks have been designed for anomaly detection. While advanced ICS attacks use sequential phases to launch their final attacks, existing anomaly detection methods can only monitor a single source of data. Therefore, analysis of multiple security data can provide comprehensive and system-wide anomaly detection in industrial networks. In this paper, we propose an anomaly detection framework for ICSs that consists of two stages: i) blockchain-based log management where the logs of ICS devices are collected in a secure and distributed manner, and ii) multi-source anomaly detection where the blockchain logs are analysed using multi-source deep learning which in turn provides a system wide anomaly detection method. We validated our framework using two ICS datasets: a factory automation dataset and a Secure Water Treatment (SWAT) dataset. These datasets contain physical and network level normal and abnormal traffic. The performance of our new framework is compared with single-source machine learning methods. The precision of our framework is 95% which is comparable with single-source anomaly detectors.

Abstract

Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) combine a remarkable combination of mobility, adaptability, and an innate capacity for obstacle avoidance. They are exceptionally well-suited for a wide range of applications but usually operate in uncontrolled, non-deterministic environments, so the analysis and classification of security events are very important for their safe operation. In this regard, we considered the influence of different types of attacks on AMR navigation systems to subdivide them into classes and unified the effect of attacks on the system through their level of consequences and impact. Then, we built a model of an attack on a system, taking into account five methods of attack implementation and identified the unified response thresholds valid for any type of parameter, which allows for creating universal correlation rules and simplifies this process, as the trigger threshold is related to the degree of impact that the attack has on the finite subsystem. Also, we developed a methodology for classifying incidents and identifying key components of the system based on ontological models, which makes it possible to predict risks and select the optimal system configuration. The obtained results are important in the context of separating different types of destructive effects based on attack classes. Our study showed that it is sometimes difficult to divide spoofing attacks into classes by assessing only one parameter since the attacker can use a complex attack scenario, mixing the stages of the scenarios. We then showed how adding an attack intensity factor can make classification more flexible. The connections between subsystems and parameters, as well as the attack impact patterns, were determined. Finally, a set of unique rules was developed to classify destructive effects with uniform response thresholds for each parameter. This paper delves into the complex task of evaluating a website user interface (UI) and user experience (UX), a process complicated by gaps in research. To bridge this, we introduced an innovative human–computer interaction (HCI) framework that synergizes expert cognitive walkthroughs and user surveys for a comprehensive view. We transformed user responses into three key domains—control, engagement, and goal. Our work also generalized an extract of four context-level data metrics for a robust evaluation. The numerical evidence, such as a C1 score of 4.1, surpassing the expert usability benchmark, indicated our framework's effectiveness. Our research not only addresses an essential gap by integrating assessments from both users and experts, but also offers actionable insights for UI/UX design. The findings extend beyond this specific context, providing a potent evaluation tool for website usability across various websites.
