The famous choir stalls from Tobsdorf in Transylvania dating from 1537 are standing again. Seven years of conservation and restoration courses at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen have worked and researched on the sacred piece of furniture. One of the main tasks was to consolidate the wooden parts, which had been severely damaged by wood-destroying insects, with a synthetic resin solution. It was also possible to attribute the choir stalls to the Sighisoara carpentry workshop of Johannes Reychmut. This publication presents the work of the HAWK and gives an impression of the rich historical interior decoration of Transylvanian churches. The texts and illustrations accompany the choir stalls from their rediscovery, through their conservation and restoration, to their departure for their new location in the St. Margret’s church in Mediasch. În vraja ei sunt atrași în special tinerii și, în felul acesta, noi, restauratorii din Hildesheim, ne-am format propria noastră tradiție. Începând cu anul 2000, am vizitat țara de la poalele Carpaților în fiecare vară, în special pentru a descoperi moștenirea istorică bogată a sașilor transilvăneni, pentru a o documenta și a o conserva. O mare putere de atracție o au cele peste 160 de biserici fortificate a căror arhitectură marcantă și caracteristică este o emblemă a Transilvaniei. Unice sunt și nenumăratele obiecte istorice din interiorul acestor biserici: altare, orgi, cristelnițe și strane. Fiind dedicați întru totul restaurării mobilierului și obiectelor din lemn ne-am simțit în mod deosebit atrași de cele din urmă, adică de strane.

This work reports a reversible braking system for micromotors that can be controlled by small temperature changes (5C). To achieve this, gatedmesoporous organosilica microparticles are internally loaded with metal catalysts (to form the motor) and the exterior (partially) grafted with thermosensitive bottlebrush polyphosphazenes to form Janus particles. When placed in an aqueous solution of H2O2 (the fuel), rapid forward propulsion of the motors ensues due to decomposition of the fuel. Conformational changes of the polymers at defined temperatures regulate the bubble formation rate and thus act as brakes with considerable deceleration/acceleration observed. Das berühmte Chorgestühl aus Tobsdorf in Siebenbürgen aus dem Jahr 1537 steht wieder. Sieben Jahrgänge der Konservierung- und Restaurierungsstudiengänge der HAWK Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen haben an dem sakralen Möbelstück gearbeitet und geforscht. Eine der Hauptaufgaben bestand vor allem in der Festigung der durch holzzerstörende Insekten stark geschädigten Holzteile mit einer Kunstharzlösung. Auch gelang es, das Chorgestühl der Schäßburger Schreinerwerkstatt von Johannes Reychmut zuzuordnen. Der Beitrag stellt die Umsetzung einer großangelegten Festigungsmaßnahme im Rahmen eines mehrjährigen Restaurierungsprojektes der Studienrichtung "Möbel und Holzobjekte" vor. Im Fokus stehen Material- und Methodenfindung, Kontrollverfahren und die Ergebnisse der Maßnahme einschließlich ihrer Bewertung. Bei dem bearbeiteten Objekt handelt es sich um ein Chorgestühl, geschaffen um 1537, aus der Wehrkirche in Tobsdorf/Rumänien. Das aus zwei Sitzabfolgen bestehende Objekt konnte 2010 zwecks Forschung und Erhaltung in die Restaurierungswerkstatt der HAWK übernommen werden. Das von ungünstigen Klimaeinflüssen und Schadinsekten sehr stark gezeichnete Kirchenmöbel war rund 500 Jahre im Chor der Kirche aufgestellt, bevor es 2003 abgebaut und zerlegt in seine Einzelteile unter schlechten Bedingungen zwischengelagert wurde. Bereits im Vorfeld des Transportes der beiden Gestühle von Rumänien nach Hildesheim zeigte sich der massive Abbau der Holzsubstanz des Lindenholzes als gravierendstes Schadensbild des Objektes. Die widrigen Umgebungsbedingungen führten dazu, dass die Holzsubstanz des Chorgestühls, besonders in bodennahen Bereichen, stark geschwächt und stellenweise unwiederbringlich zerstört bzw. bereits verloren gegangen war. Um das Ziel des Restaurierungsprojekts, den Wiederaufbau der Gestühle, erreichen zu können, kamen entsprechend des massiven Schadens umfangreiche Festigungsmaßnahmen zum Einsatz. Ende 2010 wurden erste Versuche mit Festigungsmitteln und deren Einbringmethoden unternommen. Es wurde entschieden, eine Festigung mit gelöstem Acrylharz (Degalan P28, gelöst in Xylol und Siedegrenzbenzin (SGB) 100-140°) an den tragenden Bauteilen des Gestühls vorzunehmen, die aufgrund ihrer Schädigung ihre konstruktive Funktion nicht mehr erfüllen konnten. Die Einbringmethode entwickelte sich vom punktuellen Injizieren des Festigungsmittels per Spritze oder Pipette über Einstelltränkungen bis hin zu Einlegetränkungen, kombiniert mit dem lokal begrenzten Einsatz von Epoxidharz. Durch die Kontrolle mittels Computer-Tomografie und Bohrwiderstandsmessungen war es möglich, das Material und die Methode stetig neu zu bewerten und zu optimieren, sodass schlussendlich der Erhalt des im vollständigen Verfall begriffenen Sakralmöbels unter Bewahrung größtmöglicher Originalsubstanz sichergestellt werden konnte. Bei dem in diesem Jahr beginnenden Wiederaufbau des Chorgestühles müssen sich nun die gefestigten Bauteile bewähren… ___ This paper gives an overview of a complex ongoing conservation and stabilization project undertaken by students of the course “conservation of furniture and wooden objects”. At the core of the project are the definitions of the methods and materials, control procedures and the results, including the interpretation and valuation. The processed object is a choir stall from 1537, located in the village church in Tobsdorf/Transylvania/Romania. This object, consisting of two rows of seats, was transferred to the workshop of the HAWK for research and conservation. Having been left in the choir of the church for about 500 years, the choir stalls were dramatically damaged by unhealthy climate, fungal decay and insects. In 2003 it was taken down, separated into parts, and stored temporarily under unfortunate conditions. In preparation for the transport of the two stalls from Romania to Hildesheim, it appeared that the degradation of the lime-wood represented the worst part of the damages. The adverse conditions of the environment led to irreparable damages and partial loss of the wood material, mostly in the lower parts of the choir stalls. To achieve the main goal of the project - namely the reconstruction of the stalls - and due to the important damages, complex conservation methods were required. At the end of 2010, initial experiments with conservation liquids were made. It was decided to conserve the load-bearing parts of the stalls with acrylic resin (Degalan P28, dissolved in xylene and boil-petrol 100-140°), since they could not fulfill their constructive function anymore. The methods of consolidation changed from small local injections to a complete impregnation of some parts, combined with a local use of epoxy-resin. Computer-Tomography and measurements of the drilling-resistance made it possible to reevaluate and optimize the material and methods, so that in the end it was possible to completely conserve the object by saving as much original material as possible. This year, the consolidated parts will begin to go through the test of rebuilding the choir stalls.
