Abstract

We present a theory for Casimir--Polder forces acting on greenhouse gas molecules dissolved in a thin water film. Such a nanosized film has recently been predicted to arise on th surface of melting ice as stabilized by repulsive Lifshitz forces. We show that different models for the effective polarizability of greenhouse gas molecules in water lead to different predictions for how Casimir--Polder forces influence the extraction of CH$_4$ and CO$_2$ molecules from the melting ice surface. In the most intricate model of a finite-sized molecule inside a cavity, dispersion potentials push the methane molecules towards the ice surface whereas the carbon dioxide typically will be attracted towards the closest interface (ice or air). Previous models for effective polarizability had suggested that CO$_2$ would also be pushed towards the ice surface. Release of greenhouse gas molecules from the surface of melting ice can potentially influence climate greenhouse effects.

4. Free Infragravity Waves on the Inner Shelf: Observations and Parameterizations at Two Southern California Beaches.

Abstract

Numerical predictions of nearshore waves and shoreline runup are usually initialized on the inner shelf, seaward of the surfzone, with sea‐swell (SS) waves from local wave buoys or regional wave models. Lower frequency infragravity (IG) waves are not reliably measured by buoys or included in regional models. Here, co‐located pressure and velocity observations are used to characterize IG waves in 10–15 m depth in southern California. Shoreward propagating IG waves are often dominated by free waves, with the boundwave energy fraction <30% for moderate and low energy incident SS waves. Only 5% of records, with energetic long swell, show primarily bound waves. The shoreline slope of concave beaches increases by ∼3 between spring high and low tides, and free seaward and shoreward IG energy in 10–15 m vary tidally. The observed linear dependency of free IG energy on SS energy and period is consistent with Ardhuin et al. (2014, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2014.02.006)'s parameterization (R2 = 0.71). Including the tide level as a proxy for beach slope and modifying the SS frequency dependency increases R2 to 0.91. The ratio of free seaward to shoreward propagating IG energy suggests between 50 and 100% of the energy radiated seaward in depths of 10–15 m is trapped offshore and redirected shoreward. Free (random phase) and bound (phase‐coupled) IG waves are combined to initialize the SWASH numerical model. SWASH predicted runup is only weakly influenced by waves at the offshore boundary. Nonlinear IG generation and dissipation in the shoaling and surfzone overwhelm the effects of shoreward propagating waves observed at the offshore boundary. Plain Language Summary: Infragravity (IG) waves are long‐period (25 s–2.5 min) waves that contribute to coastal flooding and beach erosion. IG waves, generated near the shoreline by short‐period sea‐swell (SS) wave groups (known by surfers as "sets"), have long wavelengths (100s of m) and do not typically curl and break like ordinary sea and swell waves. Instead, they can be reflected off the beach face and propagate seaward. Our study concerns IG waves on the inner shelf (10–15 m depth, ∼500–700 m offshore), seaward of the main region of IG generation. Similar to previous observations in Hawai'i and North Carolina, we find most of the reflected, seaward‐going IG energy cannot reach deep water and is trapped on the continental shelf. We develop an observation‐based estimate of IG wave energy on the inner shelf as a function of SS wave energy and tide level. Finally, we show with a numerical model that IG wave runup at the shoreline is influenced only weakly by IG waves on the inner shelf. Abstract

We performed phase-sensitive terahertz (0.12 - 1.2 THz) transmission measurements of Ga-enriched layers in silicon. Below the superconducting transition, T_{c} = 6.7 K, we find clear signatures of the formation of a superconducting condensate and of the opening of an energy gap in the optical spectra. The London penetration depth, \lambda(T), and the condensate density, n_{s} = \lambda^{2} 0)/\lambda^{2}(T), as functions of temperature demonstrate behavior, typical for conventional superconductors with \lambda(0) = 1.8 \mu m. The terahertz spectra can be well described within the framework of Eliashberg theory with strong electron-phonon coupling: the zero-temperature energy gap is 2\Delta(0) = 2.64 meV and 2\Delta(0)/k_{B}T_{c} = 4.6 \pm 0.1, consistent with the amorphous state of Ga. 8. The importance of radiative scattering in heated heavy ion plasmas

Abstract

The transport of energy in heated plasmas requires the knowledge of the radiation coefficients. These coefficients consist of contribution of bremsstrahlung, photoionisation, bound-bound transmissions and scattering. Scattering of photons on electrons is taken into account by the model of Thomson, Klein-Nishina and the first order angular momentum of Klein-Nishina. It is shown that radiative scattering becomes an important part of energy transport in high temperature plasmas. Moreover, the contribution of transport correction to scattering is taken into account. The physics is discussed on the example of a heated plutonium plasma at different particle densities and temperatures in radiative equilibrium., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Nanocomposite materials consist of nanometer-sized quantum objects such as atoms, molecules, voids or nanoparticles embedded in a host material. These quantum objects can be exploited as a super-structure, which can be designed to create material properties targeted for specific applications. For electromagnetism, such targeted properties include field enhancements around the bandgap of a semiconductor used for solar cells, directional decay in topological insulators, high kinetic inductance in superconducting circuits, and many more. Despite very different application areas, all of these properties are united by the common aim of exploiting collective interaction effects between quantum objects. The literature on the topic spreads over very many different disciplines and scientific communities. Dieser Artikel liefert Ansätze und Empfehlungen zur Optimierung der Herstellung von Emulsionen in der kosmetischen Produktion. Dabei wird die Auswahl der Rohstoffe, die Phasenkonstruktion, das Produktionsverfahren und der Maschinenpark betrachtet, um die Emissionen zu reduzieren und die Effizienz zu steigern. Obwohl der Fokus auf Emulsionen liegt, sind auch andere Aspekte der Produktionsoptimierung relevant. 21. Observation of Gravity Waves at the Polar Night Jet

Abstract

The polar night jet develops at high latitudes in the altitude range 30 to 70 km in winter time. The polar night jet (PNJ) shows the highest mean wind speeds observed in the atmosphere and likely plays an important role in multi-step vertical coupling not only from the ground, but also from the upper atmosphere downwards.PNJ not only controls the propagation and dissipation of gravity waves (GWs), it can also be a source of GWs due to spontaneous emission. However, the observations of interaction of GWs with PNJ are extremely difficult. We operate lidar instruments capable of measuring temperatures and winds above northern Norway (ALOMAR, 69°N) and northern Germany (Kühlungsborn, 54°N). The instruments observed the atmosphere inside and outside the Polar Vortex for more than 10 years. Using lidar measurements of temperatures and winds allows for studying up- and downward-propagating GWs in complicated dynamical situations that are often found at the polar vortex edge. Observing simultaneously up- and downward propagating waves may indicate gravity wave breakdown and secondary wave generation. 22. Optimizing Manufacturing and Osseointegration of Ti6Al4V Implants through Precision Casting and Calcium and Phosphorus Ion Implantation? In Vivo Results of a Large-Scale Animal Trial

Abstract

Background: Uncemented implants are still associated with several major challenges, especially with regard to their manufacturing and their osseointegration. In this study, a novel manufacturing technique—an optimized form of precision casting—and a novel surface modification to promote osseointegration—calcium and phosphorus ion implantation into the implant surface—were tested in vivo. Methods: Cylindrical Ti6Al4V implants were inserted bilaterally into the tibia of 110 rats. We compared two generations of cast Ti6Al4V implants (CAST 1st GEN, n = 22, and CAST 2nd GEN, n = 22) as well as cast 2nd GEN Ti6Al4V implants with calcium (CAST + CA, n = 22) and phosphorus (CAST + P, n = 22) ion implantation to standard machined Ti6Al4V implants (control, n = 22). After 4 and 12 weeks, maximal pull-out force and bone-to-implant contact rate (BIC) were measured and compared between all five groups. Results: There was no significant difference between all five groups after 4 weeks or 12 weeks with regard to pull-out force (p > 0.05, Kruskal Wallis test). Histomorphometric analysis showed no significant difference of BIC after 4 weeks (p > 0.05, Kruskal–Wallis test), whereas there was a trend towards a higher BIC in the CAST + P group (54.8% ± 15.2%), especially compared to the control group (38.6% ± 12.8%) after 12 weeks (p = 0.053, Kruskal–Wallis test). Conclusion: In this study, we found no indication of inferiority of Ti6Al4V implants cast with the optimized centrifugal precision casting technique of the second generation compared to standard Ti6Al4V implants. As the employed manufacturing process holds considerable economic potential, mainly due to a significantly decreased material demand per implant by casting near net-shape instead of milling away most of the starting ingot, its application in manufacturing uncemented implants seems promising. However, no significant advantages of calcium or phosphorus ion implantation could be observed in this study. Due to the promising results of ion implantation in previous in vitro and in vivo studies, further in vivo studies with different ion implantation conditions should be considered.

Abstract

The family of RNA-binding proteins (RBP) functions as a crucial regulator of multiple biological processes and diseases. However, RBP function in the clinical setting of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is still unknown. We developed a practical in silico screening approach for the characterization of RBPs using multi-sources data information and comparative molecular network bioinformatics followed by wet-lab validation studies. Data mining of bulk RNA-Sequencing data of tissues of patients with IPF identified Quaking (QKI) as a significant downregulated RBP. Cell-type specific expression was confirmed by single-cell RNA-Sequencing analysis of IPF patient data. We systematically analyzed the molecular interaction network around QKI and its functional interplay with microRNAs (miRs) in human lung fibroblasts and discovered a novel regulatory miR-506-QKI axis contributing to the pathogenesis of IPF. The in silico results were validated by in-house experiments applying model systems of miR and lung biology. This study supports an understanding of the intrinsic molecular mechanisms of IPF regulated by the miR-506-QKI axis. Initially applied to human lung disease, the herein presented integrative in silico data mining approach can be adapted to other disease entities, underlining its practical relevance in RBP research.

Abstract

OBJECTIVEClinical evidence on giant intracranial aneurysms (GIAs), intracranial aneurysms with a diameter of at least 25 mm, is limited. The authors aimed to investigate the natural history, case fatality, and treatment outcomes of ruptured and unruptured GIAs.METHODSIn this international observational registry study, patients with a ruptured or unruptured GIA received conservative management (CM), surgical management (SM), or endovascular management (EM). The authors investigated rupture rates and case fatality.RESULTSThe retrospective cohort comprised 219 patients with GIAs (21.9% ruptured GIAs and 78.1% unruptured GIAs) whose index hospitalization occurred between January 2006 and November 2016. The index hospitalization in the prospective cohort (362 patients with GIAs [17.1% ruptured and 82.9% unruptured]) occurred between December 2008 and February 2017. In the retrospective cohort, the risk ratio for death at a mean follow-up of 4.8 years (SD 2.2 years) after CM, compared with EM and SM, was 1.63 (95% CI 1.23–2.16) in ruptured GIAs and 3.96 (95% CI 2.57–6.11) in unruptured GIAs. In the prospective cohort, the 1-year case fatality in ruptured GIAs/unruptured GIAs was 100%/22.0% during CM, 36.0%/3.0% after SM, and 39.0%/12.0% after EM. Corresponding 1-year rupture rates in unruptured GIAs were 25.0% during CM, 1.2% after SM, and 2.5% after EM. In unruptured GIAs, the HR for death within the 1st year in patients with posterior circulation GIAs was 6.7 (95% CI 1.5–30.4, p < 0.01), with patients with a GIA at the supraclinoid internal carotid artery as reference. Different sizes of unruptured GIAs were not associated with 1-year case fatality.CONCLUSIONSRupture rates for unruptured GIAs were high, and the natural history and treatment outcomes for ruptured GIAs were poor. Patients undergoing SM or EM showed lower case fatality and rupture rates than those undergoing CM. Abstract

This article discusses the case of a pregnant patient with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) who presented with multiple hemangioblastomas in the central nervous system (CNS). Hemangioblastomas are common tumors associated with VHL and can significantly increase morbidity and mortality. The possible influence of pregnancy on the growth of these tumors remains unclear. The article presents the case of a 28-year-old pregnant patient with VHL who underwent microsurgical resection of three dominant lesions. The patient had a successful pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby. The article also discusses the progression of hemangioblastomas during pregnancy and the recommended treatment approaches. 40. Ein mathematisches Modell zur Schätzung der Dunkelziffer von SARS-CoV-2-Infektionen in der Frühphase der Pandemie am Beispiel Deutschland und Italien

Abstract

Hintergrund. Gerade in der Frühphase einer Pandemie ist es schwierig, verlässliche Zahlen über deren Ausbreitung zu erhalten. Die derzeitige COVID-19-Pandemie und das damit verbundene umfassende, aber nicht vollständige Datenmonitoring bieten die Möglichkeit, die Dunkelziffer der nicht erfassten Fälle zu schätzen. Ziel. Vorstellung eines einfachen mathematischen Modells, welches eine frühzeitige Abschätzung der Zahl nichtregistrierter Fälle (Dunkelziffer) ermöglicht. Material und Methoden. Es werden die Prävalenzen der gemeldeten Infektionen in verschiedenen Altersgruppen mit Kennzahlen der altersabhängigen Kontaktzahlen kombiniert. Daraus wird für jede Altersgruppe eine korrigierte Prävalenz abgeleitet, mit der dann die Dunkelziffer geschätzt werden kann. Ergebnisse. Unser Modell berechnet für Mitte April 2020 in Deutschland insgesamt 2,8-mal so viele Infektionen wie die Zahl der registrierten Infektionen (Fälle). Für Italien ergibt sich Mitte April 2020 ein Faktor von 8,3. Die daraus abgeleiteten Fallsterblichkeiten betragen 0,98 % für Deutschland und 1,51 % für Italien, welche deutlich näher zusammenliegen als die rein aus den zu dem Zeitpunkt vorhandenen Meldezahlen abgeleiteten Fallsterblichkeiten von 2,7 % und 12,6 %. Diskussion. Die aus dem Modell abgeleitete Dunkelziffer kann die unterschiedlichen Beobachtungen in den Fallsterblichkeiten und der Zustände in der Frühphase der COVID-19-Pandemie in Deutschland und Italien zu einem großen Teil erklären. Das Modell ist einfach, schnell und robust implementierbar und kann gut darauf reagieren, wenn die Meldezahlen hinsichtlich der Altersstruktur nicht repräsentativ für die Bevölkerung sind. Wir empfehlen, dieses Modell für eine effiziente und frühzeitige Schätzung nichtgemeldeter Fallzahlen bei zukünftigen Epidemien und Pandemien in Betracht zu ziehen.

Abstract

Context. Gas hydrates can be stabilised outside their window of thermodynamic stability by the formation of an ice layer – a phenomenon termed self-preservation. This can lead to a positive buoyancy for clathrate particles containing CO2 that would otherwise sink in the oceans of Enceladus, Pluto, and similar oceanic worlds. Aims. Here we investigate the implications of Lifshitz forces and low occupancy surface regions on type I clathrate structures for their self-preservation through ice layer formation, presenting a plausible model based on multi-layer interactions through dispersion forces. Methods. We used optical data and theoretical models for the dielectric response for water, ice, and gas hydrates with a different occupancy. Taking this together with the thermodynamic Lifshitz free energy, we modelled the energy minima essential for the formation of ice layers at the interface between gas hydrate and liquid water. Results. We predict the growth of an ice layer between 0.01 and 0.2 μm thick on CO, CH4, and CO2 hydrate surfaces, depending on the presence of surface regions depleted in gas molecules. Effective hydrate particle density is estimated, delimiting a range of particle size and compositions that would be buoyant in different oceans. Over geological time, the deposition of floating hydrate particles could result in the accumulation of kilometre-thick gas hydrate layers above liquid water reservoirs and below the water ice crusts of their respective ocean worlds. On Enceladus, the destabilisation of near-surface hydrate deposits could lead to increased gas pressures that both drive plumes and entrain stabilised hydrate particles. Furthermore, on ocean worlds, such as Enceladus and particularly Pluto, the accumulation of thick CO2 or mixed gas hydrate deposits could insulate its ocean against freezing. Abstract

Background: Among asymptomatic patients with severe carotid artery stenosis but no recent stroke or transient cerebral ischaemia, either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can restore patency and reduce long-term stroke risks. However, from recent national registry data, each option causes about 1% procedural risk of disabling stroke or death. Comparison of their long-term protective effects requires large-scale randomised evidence. Methods: ACST-2 is an international multicentre randomised trial of CAS versus CEA among asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis thought to require intervention, interpreted with all other relevant trials. Patients were eligible if they had severe unilateral or bilateral carotid artery stenosis and both doctor and patient agreed that a carotid procedure should be undertaken, but they were substantially uncertain which one to choose. Patients were randomly allocated to CAS or CEA and followed up at 1 month and then annually, for a mean 5 years. Procedural events were those within 30 days of the intervention. Intention-to-treat analyses are provided. Analyses including procedural hazards use tabular methods. Analyses and meta-analyses of non-procedural strokes use Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN21144362. Findings: Between Jan 15, 2008, and Dec 31, 2020, 3625 patients in 130 centres were randomly allocated, 1811 to CAS and 1814 to CEA, with good compliance, good medical therapy and a mean 5 years of follow-up. Overall, 1% had disabling stroke or death procedurally (15 allocated to CAS and 18 to CEA) and 2% had non-disabling procedural stroke (48 allocated to CAS and 29 to CEA). Kaplan-Meier estimates of 5-year non-procedural stroke were 2·5% in each group for fatal or disabling stroke, and 5·3% with CAS versus 4·5% with CEA for any stroke (rate ratio [RR] 1·16, 95% CI 0·86–1·57; p=0·33).
