5. Expansion of the fern genus Lecanopteris to encompass some species previously included in Microsorum and Colysis (Polypodiaceae)

The fern genus Microsorum is not monophyletic, with previous phylogenetic analyses finding three lineages to group not with the type species, but to form a grade related to the 13 species of Lecanopteris. These three lineages have recently been recognised as separate genera: Bosmania , Dendroconche, and Zealandia. Here, we explore the morphological characterisation of Lecanopteris and these other three lecanopteroid genera. While the\ traditional circumscription of Lecanopteris has seemed sacrosanct, its defining morphological character states of rhizome cavities and ant brooding associations occur in other lecanopteroid ferns and elsewhere in the Polypodiaceae. Instead, we suggest that the morphological characterisation of an expanded Lecanopteris including the Dendroconche and Zealandia lineages is just as good, if not better, with the pertinent character states being the absence of sclerenchyma strands in the rhizome and atleast some fronds having Nooteboom's type 5 venation pattern. This wider circumscription is also better able to accommodate phylogenetic uncertainty, and it means that groups of species traditionally placed together in a single genus are not distributed across different genera. General users familiar with the narrower circumscription of Lecanopteris will not be significantly disrupted, because there is little geographic overlap with the lineages added to the genus. Consequently, we make new combinations in Lecanopteris for 11 species and one subspecies.

The work describes the pedestal structure, transport and stability in an effective mass (A
eff ) scan from pure deuterium to pure tritium plasmas using a type I ELMy H-mode dataset in which key parameters that affect the pedestal behaviour (normalized pressure, ratio of the separatrix density to the pedestal density, pedestal ion Larmor radius, pedestal collisionality and rotation) are kept as constant as possible. Experimental results show a significant increase of the density at the pedestal top with increasing Aeff , a modest reduction in the temperature and an increase in the pressure. The variations in the pedestal heights are mainly due to a change in the pedestal gradients while only small differences are observed in the pedestal width. A clear increase in the pedestal density and pressure gradients are observed from deuterium to tritium. The experimental results suggest a reduction of the pedestal inter-edge localized mode (inter-ELM) transport from deuterium to tritium. The reduction is likely in the pedestal inter-ELM particle transport, as suggested by the clear increase of the pedestal density gradients. The experimental results suggest also a possible reduction of the pedestal inter-ELM heat transport, however, the large experimental uncertainties do not allow conclusive claims on the heat diffusivity. The clear experimental reduction of ηe (the ratio between density and temperature gradient lengths) in the middle/top of the pedestal with increasing Aeff suggests that there may be a link between increasing Aeff and the reduction of electron scale turbulent transport. From the modelling point of view, an initial characterization of the behaviour of pedestal microinstabilities shows that the tritium plasma is characterized by growth rates lower than the deuterium plasmas. The pedestal stability of peeling-ballooning modes is assessed with both ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). No significant effect of the isotope mass on the pedestal stability is observed using ideal MHD. Instead, resistive MHD shows a clear increase of the stability with increasing isotope mass. The resistive MHD results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results of the normalized pedestal pressure gradient. The experimental and modelling results suggest that the main candidates to explain the change in the pedestal are a reduction in the inter-ELM transport and an improvement of the pedestal stability from deuterium to tritium. A key aim of the 2021 JET deuterium-tritium (D-T) experiments was to demonstrate steady high fusion power (10-15MW) with the ITER-like Be/W first wall. Plasmas were developed using D, repeated with T to investigate and mitigate isotope effects, and run with D-T to maximise fusion power. Compared with high current (q95~3) 'baseline' plasmas, the JET 'hybrid' scenario has reduced current (2.3MA at q95~4.5-5) and increased q0 (...1) to avoid deleterious MHD modes and access favourable confinement properties at high poloidal ... (>1). This candidate approach for ITER had never previously been tested using T or D-T fuel. In this presentation the process of 'hybrid' D-T scenario development will be explained for key phases from current ramp-up to termination, all of which are sensitive to isotope effects and impurities from the wall. For example, in the ohmic current ramp, used to pre-form the q-profile, an increase in central impurity radiation with main ion isotope mass was anticipated from previous mixed H-D experimentsa and predictive modelling, allowing mitigation actions to be rapidly implemented for T and D-T. During the early H-mode phase, prevention of impurity influxes at the edge pedestal was the primary method for core radiation control using a combination of screening and ELM flushing. This was more challenging for T & D-T plasmas compared with D, and fine adjustment of heating and gas fuelling was needed to avoid excessive edge radiation and to establish regular ELMs with H98?1. After careful adaptation for D-T, high fusion power was achieved, broadly consistent with previous modelling predictionsb given the available heating power. This led to a record fusion energy for a plasma with nD...nT of ~46 MJ.

- Abstract
The mega amp spherical tokamak (MAST) was a low aspect ratio device (R/a = 0.85/0.65 ~ 1.3) with similar poloidal cross-section to other medium-size tokamaks. The physics programme concentrates on addressing key physics issues for the operation of ITER, design of DEMO and future spherical tokamaks by utilising high resolution diagnostic measurements closely coupled with theory and modelling to significantly advance our understanding. An empirical scaling of the energy confinement time that favours higher power, lower collisionality devices is consistent with gyrokinetic modelling of electron scale turbulence. Measurements of ion scale turbulence with beam emission spectroscopy and gyrokinetic modelling in up-down symmetric plasmas find that the symmetry of the turbulence is broken by flow shear. Near the non-linear stability threshold, flow shear tilts the density fluctuation correlation function and skews the fluctuation amplitude distribution. Results from fast particle physics studies include the observation that sawteeth are found to redistribute passing and trapped fast particles injected from neutral beam injectors in equal measure, suggesting that resonances between the m = 1 perturbation and the fast ion orbits may be playing a dominant role in the fast ion transport. Measured D–D fusion products from a neutron camera and a charged fusion product detector are 40% lower than predictions from TRANSP/NUBEAM, highlighting possible deficiencies in the guiding centre approximation. Modelling of fast ion losses in the presence of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) can reproduce trends observed in experiments when the plasma response and charge-exchange losses are accounted for. The pedestal structure, edge transport and linear MHD stability have been analyzed in a series of JET with the ITER-like wall hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) type I ELMy H-mode plasmas. The pedestal pressure is typically higher in D than in H at the same input power and gas rate, with the difference mainly due to lower density in H than in D (Maggi et al (JET Contributors) 2018 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 60 014045). A power balance analysis of the pedestal has shown that higher inter-ELM separatrix loss power is required in H than in D to maintain a similar pedestal top pressure. This is qualitatively consistent with a set of interpretative EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations for H and D plasmas, showing that higher edge particle and heat transport coefficients are needed in H than in D to match the experimental profiles. It has also been concluded that the difference in neutral penetration between H and D leads only to minor changes in the upstream density profiles and with trends opposite to experimental observations. This implies that neutral penetration has a minor role in setting the difference between H and D pedestals, but higher ELM and/or inter-ELM transport are likely to be the main players. The interpretative EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations, with simultaneous upstream and outer divertor target profile constraints, have indicated higher separatrix electron temperature in H than in D for a pair of discharges at low fueling gas rate and similar stored energy (which required higher input power in H than in D at the same gas rate). The isotope dependence of linear MHD pedestal stability has been found to be small, but if a higher separatrix temperature is considered in H than in D, this could lead to destabilization of peeling-ballooning modes and shrinking of the stability boundary, qualitatively consistent with the reduced pedestal confinement in H. Extinction is a profound biological event, yet despite its finality it can be difficult to verify and many frameworks have been proposed to define formally that extinction has occurred. For most taxonomic groups and regions there is no reliable list of species considered to be probably or possibly extinct. The record of plant extinctions in Australia is no exception, characterized by high turn-over within lists, low transparency of attribution and lack of consistency between jurisdictions. This makes it impossible to evaluate how many plant taxa have become extinct in Australia. We present an ecological framework for assessing the likelihood of plant extinctions, based on taxonomic soundness, degree of habitat modification, detectability and search effort, underpinned by the best available expert knowledge. We show that, in sharp contrast to both the fate of the Australian fauna and prevailing assumptions, only 12 of 71 plant taxa currently listed as or assumed to be extinct are considered probably extinct, and a further 21 possibly extinct. Twenty taxa listed as or assumed to be extinct have dubious taxonomy or occurrence in Australia, and the remaining 18 taxa are considered possibly extant and further surveys are required to ascertain their status. The list of probably and possibly extinct plants is dwarfed by the number thought extinct but rediscovered since 1980. Our method can be used for vascular floras in other regions characterized by well-documented and curated floras and high levels of expert knowledge, and provides a transparent platform for assessing changes in the status of biodiversity. - Abstract
The dynamics and stability of divertor detachment in N2 seeded, type-I, ELMy H-mode plasmas with dominant NBI heating in the JET ITER-like wall device is studied by means of an integrated analysis of diagnostic data from several systems, classifying data relative to the ELM times. It is thereby possible to study the response of the detachment evolution to the control parameters (SOL input power, upstream density and impurity fraction) prevailing during the inter-ELM periods and the effect of ELMs on the detached divertor. A relatively comprehensive overview is achieved, including the interaction with the targets at various stages of the ELM cycle, the role of ELMs in affecting the detachment process and the overall performance of the scenario. The results are consistent with previous studies in devices with an ITER-like, metal wall, with the important advance of distinguishing data from intra- and inter-ELM periods. Operation without significant degradation of the core confinement can be sustained in the presence of strong radiation from the x-point region (MARFE).

- Abstract
In a comparative study of various confinement regimes the H-mode demonstrated the best performance. Confinement enhancement factors (above ITER 89-P L-mode scaling) in the range of 1.6 fH 2.8 have been achieved with values depending on the divertor configuration, the wall condition, ELM behaviour and the plasma ion spicies. Long-pulse H-phases, withELMs, of up to 3.5s with constant confinement time, recycling and impurity characteristics are archived. H* -mode operation is possible without a loss of current scaling at qa values as low as 2.2. The B-limit is the same with and without ELMs. Murakami parameters are similar in H-and L-modes.

Experimental data from the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is used to show that the inverse gradient scale length of the ion temperature has its strongest local correlation with the rotational shear and the pitch angle of the magnetic field. Furthermore, is found to be inversely correlated with the gyro-Bohm-normalized local turbulent heat flux estimated from the density fluctuation level measured using a 2D beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic. These results can be explained in terms of the conjecture that the turbulent system adjusts to keep close to a certain critical value (marginal for the excitation of turbulence) determined by local equilibrium parameters (although not necessarily by linear stability).
