Sequence alignment is common nowadays as it is used in many fields to determine how closely two sequences are related and at times to see how little they differ. In computational biology / Bioinformatics, there are many algorithms developed over the course of time to not only align two sequences quickly but also get good laboratory results from these alignments. The first algorithms developed were based of a technique called Dynamic Programming, which were very slow but were optimal when it comes to sensitivity. To improve speed, more algorithms today are based of heuristic approach, by sacrificing sensitivity. In this paper, we are going to improve on a heuristic algorithm called MASAA (Multiple Anchor Staged Local Sequence Alignment Algorithm) and MASAA Sensitive which we published previously. This new algorithm appropriately called Maximum Match Subsequence Alignment Algorithm Finely Grained. The algorithm is based on suffix tree data structure like our previous algorithms, but to improve sensitivity, we employ adaptive seeds, and finely grained perfect match seeds in between the already identified anchors. We tested this algorithm on a randomly generated sequences, and Rosetta dataset where the sequence length ranged up to 500 thousand., Comment: Pg 6, 6 figures, CSCE 2020 accepted paper

Optical materials with colour-changing abilities have been explored for display devices, smart windows, or modulation of visual appearance. The efficiency of these materials, however, has strong wavelength dependence, which limits their functionality to a narrow spectral range. Here, we report graphene-based electro-optical devices with unprecedented optical tunability covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the visible to microwave. We achieve this non-volatile and reversible tunability by electro-intercalation of lithium into graphene layers in an optically accessible device structure. This unique colour-changing capability, together with area-selective intercalation, inspires fabrication of new multispectral devices, including display devices and electro-optical camouflage coating. We anticipate that these results provide realistic approaches for programmable smart optical surfaces with a potential utility in many scientific and engineering fields.

One source contributing to wind tunnel background noise is microphone self-noise. An experiment was conducted to investigate the flow-induced acoustic oscillations of Bruel & Kjaer (B&K) in-flow microphones. The results strongly suggest the B&K microphone cavity behaves more like an open cavity. Their cavity acoustic oscillations are likely caused by strong interactions between the cavity shear layer and the cavity trailing edge. But the results also suggest that cavity shear layer oscillations could be coupled with cavity acoustic resonance to generate tones. Detailed flow velocity measurements over the cavity screen have shown inflection points in the mean velocity profiles and high disturbance and spectral intensities in the vicinity of the cavity trailing edge. These results are the evidence for strong interactions between cavity shear layer oscillations and the cavity trailing edge. They also suggest that beside acoustic signals, the microphone inside the cavity has likely recorded hydrodynamic pressure oscillations, too. The results also suggest that the forebody shape does not have a direct effect on cavity oscillations. For the FITE (Flow Induced Tone Eliminator) microphone, it is probably the forebody length and the resulting boundary layer turbulence that have made it work. Turbulence might have thickened the boundary layer at the separation point, weakened the shear layer vortices, or lifted them to miss impinging on the cavity trailing edge. In addition, the study shows that the cavity screen can modulate the oscillation frequency but not the cavity acoustic oscillation mechanisms.

A series of fracture tests on large-scale, pre-cracked, aluminum alloy panels is being carried out to examine and to characterize the process by which cracks propagate and link up in this material. Extended grips and test fixtures were specially designed to enable the panel specimens to be loaded in tension, in a 1780-kN-capacity universal testing machine. Twelve panel specimens, each consisting of a single sheet of bare 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, 3988 mm high, 2286 mm wide, and 1.016 mm thick are being fabricated with simulated through-cracks oriented horizontally at mid-height. Using existing information, a test matrix has been set up that explores regions of failure that are controlled by fracture mechanics, with additional tests near the boundary between plastic collapse and fracture. In addition, a variety of multiple site damage (MSD) configurations have been included to distinguish between various proposed linkage mechanisms. All tests but one use anti-buckling guides. At this writing seven specimens have been tested. Three were fabricated with a single central crack, three others had multiple cracks on each side of the central crack, and one had a single crack but no anti-buckling guides. Each fracture event was recorded on film, video, computer, magnetic tape, and occasionally optical microscopy. The visual showed the crack tip with a load meter in the field of view, using motion picture film for one tip and SVHS video tape for the other. The computer recorded the output of the testing machine load cell, the stroke, and twelve strain gages at 1.5 second intervals. A wideband FM magnetic tape recorder was used to record data from the same sources. The data were analyzed by two different procedures: (1) the plastic zone model based on the residual strength diagram; and (2) the R-curve. The first three tests were used to determine the basic material properties, and these results were then used in the analysis of the two subsequent tests with MSD cracks. There is good agreement between measured values and results obtained from the model.

To meet the needs of the growing passenger traffic market in light of an aging subsonic fleet, a new breed of aircraft must be developed. The Swift is an aircraft that will economically meet these needs by the year 2000. Swift is a 246 passenger, Mach 2.5, luxury airliner. It has been designed to provide the benefit of comfortable, high speed transportation in a safe manner with minimal environmental impact. This report will discuss the features of the Swift aircraft and establish a solid, foundation for this supersonic transport of tomorrow.
