Predation of Ameiva ameiva (Squamata: Teiidae) by Caracara plancus, with a review of predators in Brazil

Children have the right to express their views in all matters affecting them, and to have them considered and given due weight. Children’s participation is most meaningful when rooted in children’s everyday lives, and its promotion should be encouraged from the youngest ages, especially in early childhood education and care (ecec). In this paper we apply the Lundy model of participation, widely used in policy, practice and professional development initiatives, to the ecec context. Based on examples provided by ecec professionals from Belgium, Greece, Poland, and Portugal, we illustrate the implementation of the elements of space, voice, audience and influence, proposed by the Lundy model. We also discuss the interrelations among these elements and the need for organisational and contextual support to enhance children’s participation. This paper adds to existing literature, highlighting theoretical and practical issues associated with the promotion of children’s right to participate in ecec.

Considerando-se a expressão da área cultivada com mangueira nos polos irrigados do Nordeste e a escassez de informação para maximizar a sua produção, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar parâmetros produtivos e qualitativos da mangueira ?Keitt? submetida a diferentes laminas de irrigação, na regiao de Ipanguacu - RN. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com 5 l?aminas de irrigação (40; 60; 80; 100 e 120% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc) e 5 repetições, sendo utilizadas 4 plantas por parcela experimental, em dois ciclos de cultivo. Foram avaliados o numero de frutos por planta (NF), peso médio de frutos (PMF), produtividade (PT), teor de solidos soluveis (SS) e acidez titulavel (AT). As PT m´aximas estimadas foram obtidas com as laminas de irrigaçao de 91,9% e 85,5% da ETc no 1º e 2º ciclos da cultura, respectivamente. O PMF no 1º ciclo foi estimado em 0,69 kg com lamina de irrigaçao de 120% da ETc e no 2º ciclo o PMF m´aximo foi estimado em 0,75 kg com lamina de irrigaçao de 107,5% da ETc. O deficit e o excesso hídrico limitaram o SS e a AT em ambos os ciclos. As mangas oriundas do lado poente da planta apresentaram maior acidez titulavel que as do lado nascente. Online-learning platforms have long been praised for their great benefits, such as the way they contribute to long-distance students being able to overcome geographical barriers to their education, and the way they allow students to self-manage, by autonomously deciding when they enroll and complete courses. This empowers people from all over the world to engage in lifelong-learning that may have an important impact in their daily lives, especially in developing countries. Besides these benefits, there’s also an important dimension that is often overlooked: the contribution that the use of online-learning platforms has in providing a sustainable environment by reducing environmentally-damaging effects and the use of scarce resources. In this paper, we present the economical and environmental impact that the use of an online-learning platform has had in a public University in Lisbon, Portugal. We first present the online-learning platform that was developed in-house and follow up by describing the positive impact that this education paradigm has had in the lives of students, in reducing costs at the University, and in contributing to a more sustainable future. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Natural characteristics may contribute to the erosion of the soil and to environmental imbalances, and in most cases, they initiate the imbalances that will be exacerbated by human activities. The presence of asymmetry in a frequency diagram is a valuable fact, and may indicate irregularity in the occurrence of events or aggregation of events in preferred locations. Thus, this work aims to demonstrate the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) of statistical analysis based on patterns of frequency, density, distribution and spatial dependence of sample points through a cutout of the mapping of the geotechnical aspects conducted for the State of Mato Grosso, generated for the entire area of plateaus and depressions of the Upper Paraguai river basin and its internal units of drainage basins. In most cutouts used in the analysis, the values indicated that is void the possibility that the distribution patterns of erosive events were resulted of chance. The aggregate pattern shown may tend to attract new points, facilitating the transmission of the sample’s qualities through these, favored by your proximity and by the characteristics of the occurrence area. Without question, entrepreneurship is present in all spheres of our lives, especially in economic and social areas. This field is significant in the development of societies and is also considered a useful tool in promoting innovation and job creation in many countries. For this reason, it needs to be promoted as a central component of economic growth. As a result, the creation of new businesses or projects and the promotion of self-employment have been stimulated by public and private organisations. The goal of this research is to determine what triggers individuals to be actively involved in entrepreneurial activity in the initial phases, based on a survey by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor conducted in Portugal, in 2012. The results of this analysis revealed that early-stage entrepreneurial activity is associated with younger (25–34 years old) males, who have a medium to higher level of household income, as well as diplomas. They are self-employed, and they have loose ties to other entrepreneurs. They perceive themselves as possessing entrepreneurial skills and have a low level of perceived risk and a positive personal attitude towards individual innovation. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

O tromboembolismo venoso (TEV) constitui uma complicação importante dos internamentos hospitalares. Numa tentativa de minimizar o risco acrescido nestes doentes, estão recomendadas medidas profiláticas com eficácia comprovada na prevenção do TEV. As recomendações internacionais há muito que generalizaram a sua utilização tanto nos doentes cirúrgicos como nos doentes médicos, no entanto a literatura internacional continua a reportar a pouca adesão às mesmas. Os autores avaliaram a adesão ao Procedimento para Prevenção de Tromboembolias Venosas no Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal, EPE; três anos após a sua implementação na instituição. Para isso realizou-se um estudo de corte transversal e foi efectuada a análise de processos clínicos de doentes em regime de internamento nos vários departamentos do hospital. Para cada doente foram avaliados o risco individual de TEV e o cumprimento das recomendações do Procedimento para Prevenção de Tromboembolias Venosas no Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal, EPE. Dos 234 doentes internados no Centro Hospitalar, 25 foram excluídos. Os doentes foram avaliados dentro dos grupos de patologia médica ou cirúrgica. Dos 209 doentes estudados; 80,4% apresentavam risco moderado a elevado de TEV. A taxa de adesão ao procedimento hospitalar foi: 75,3% e 86,6%, em doentes com patologia médica e cirúrgica, respectivamente. Estes valores encontram-se acima do observado em estudos nacionais anteriores. No entanto nos doentes com risco de TEV e com contra-indicações para utilização de profilaxia medicamentosa apenas 9,7% efectuam profilaxia mecânica o que constitui um importante campo de melhoria futura. Tropical wetland soils emit large amounts of nitrous oxide (N2O), especially following wetting of drained soil. We investigated seasonally drained wetland soils from the Pantanal and the Amazon, both with a natural high nitrate content and low pH. Here we report the effect of wetting on the production, emission and consumption of N2O on these soils. Intact soil cores were wetted to simulate natural water logging events, and microsensor measurements were used to i) characterize the vertical microscale distribution of O2 and N2O, ii) monitor the accumulation of N2O in the anoxic soil volume, and iii) quantify the N2O efflux out of the soil. Flux chamber measurements of N2O emission confirmed the effluxes calculated from microsensor measurements.The N2O concentration dynamics in the soil cores were characterized by three distinct phases: 1) an initial slow N2O production, 2) a higher N2O production ending abruptly when the supply of NO3- and NO2- (NOx-) was exhausted, and 3) a final phase where the accumulated N2O was reduced to N2. This evolution of the N2O pool in an intact soil core could be accurately simulated by a simple diffusion-reaction model with the presence of O2 and NOx- as determining factors.Approximately one third of the initial NO3- present in the soil was lost as N2O or N2. As the soil was depleted for NO3- by the end of the experiment we suggest that dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) was responsible for reducing the remaining NO3-. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
