Objective To investigate the effect of light-curing distance on the effectiveness of cure (EC) of bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs). Materials and methods Two bulk-fill RBCs (a Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TN) and a Filtek Bulk Fill (FK)) are evaluated. Specimens (4 mm high) are cured for 20 s at different distances (0 mm (D0), 2 mm (D2), 4 mm (D4), 6 mm (D6) and 8 mm (D8)) and stored for 24 h in 100% relative humidity at 37 °C. The top and bottom surface hardness (SH) (n = 12) are assessed using a Knoop microhardness tester and the EC is calculated. The EC is characterized by the hardness ratio (HR) (mean bottom: top SH). An HR of 0.8 is used as the benchmark for an effective/adequate cure. Data are analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s post hoc test (α = 0.05). Correlations between the top and bottom surfaces are examined using the Pearson correlation (α = 0.05). Results For the TN, the HR at D8 is significantly lower than all other light-curing distances, while for the FK, it is significantly lower than D0 only. Conclusion The effect of light-curing distance on the EC of bulk-fill RBCs is material dependent. Notwithstanding the light-curing distance, the EC of the FK and TN is below the threshold HR value of 0.8 when photopolymerized for 20 s in 4 mm increments in black opaque molds.

Background The contraction presented by resin composites causes an increase in stress at the tooth-resin interface, causing micro-gaps that allow microleakage. This study aims to evaluate the degree of in vitro marginal microleakage in class II restorations with two bulk fill resin composites compared to a conventional nanohybrid resin composite. Methods The present study was an in vitro experimental design. A total of 30 standardized class II cavities were prepared in 15 human molars (mesially and distally). These cavities were later distributed in 3 groups according to the type of resin. Groups A and B were restored with bulk fill resin composites (Filtek—3 M/ESPE and Tetric N-Ceram—Ivoclar/Vivadent respectively) in a single increment of 4 mm. Group C was restored with the Filtek Z350 XT – 3 M/ESPE resin composite and two increments of 2 mm. Later, the restorations were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles between 5 °C to 55 °C and immersed in a silver nitrate solution (1 M for 24 h). The crowns were then sectioned mesiodistally and observed under the stereomicroscope to determine the degree of marginal microleakage at the occlusal and cervical areas. The results were analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis and the Mann–Whitney U statistical tests. Results There were no statistically significant differences regarding the degree of microleakage between the three types of resin composites in the occlusal and cervical areas (p > 0.05). Similarly, there were no significant differences after comparing each resin type in its occlusal and cervical area (p > 0.05). Conclusion Filtek Bulk Fill and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill resin composites showed no statistically significant differences with the conventional nanohybrid resin composite Filtek Z350XT at both occlusal and cervical areas.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types and restorative techniques of Class I composite restorations with a single loading force on stress distribution and cyclic loading force on microleakage formation. Materials and Methods Class I cavities were prepared in premolars with 4 mm depth and divided into six groups of different restorations with: (1) Filtek Z250; (2) a 3-mm-thick layer of Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restoration and covered with Z250; (3) a 1.5-mm-thick layer of flowable composite and covered with Z250; (4) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with Z250; (5) Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restoration; and (6) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with bulk-fill composite. The specimens with and without cyclic occlusal loading were subjected to microleakage observation. In addition, six different models of Class I restorations corresponding to the microleakage study were generated. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to identify the stress distribution under a single loading force. Statistical Analysis Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and multiple comparison. The significance level set at 0.05. Results Cavity lining or restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced stress on composite resin based on FEA (groups 2 and 3). The cyclic stress on composite increased microleakage. Restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced the microleakage in Class I restoration (groups 2, 3, and 4). Conclusion The most effective cavity lining with a flowable composite underneath conventional composite restoration was stress reduction under loading force resulting in microleakage reduction.

The choice of the best finishing/polishing methods for composite resin restorations is critical to the choice of excellence results related to longer clinical longevity. The objective of the study was to evaluate the influence of finishing and polishing systems on the surface roughness of a Nanoparticulate and Bulk-fill resin. For the research, 40 sample disks were prepared for each composite: single-increment (BF) (Bulk Fill 3M), both 2 mm thick and 10 mm in diameter (FZ) (Filtek Z350, 3M). The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups with 10 samples each, according to the different materials to which they were subjected to the finishing and polishing protocols: control [C]- diamond tip (FG 4137F, FAVA); [EN] polishing discs (Enhance, Dentsply); [SL] Abrasive discs (Sof-Lex Pop-on, 3M) and [PD] felt disc + Polishing paste (Diamond Excel, FGM). A surface roughness (Ra) was verified with a roughness meter in three different data volumes and calculated as arithmetic means. Data were statistically treated by one way ANOVA followed by test t and student t test. Regardless of the data tested, evidence of the systemic controlling against different systems for polishing control with control (p 0.05). The different finishing / polishing methods influenced the surface roughness of both composites, observing for Sof-lex and Enhance lower Ra values.Keywords: Nanoparticles. Dental Polishing. Para a pesquisa foram confeccionados 40 discos de amostra para cada compósito: Convencional [FZ] (Filtek Z350, 3M) e de incremento único [BF] (Filtek Bulk Fill, 3M), ambas com 2 mm de espessura e 10 mm de diâmetro. Foram divididos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos com 10 amostras cada, de acordo com os diferentes protocolos que receberam, sendo: controle (C) ponta diamantada (FG 4137F, FAVA); (EN) discos de silicone (Enhance, Dentsply); (SL) discos abrasivos (Sof-Lex Pop-on, 3M); (PD) Feltro + Pasta diamantada (Diamond Excel, FGM). A rugosidade de superfície (Ra) foi verificada com um rugosímetro em três leituras de diferentes direções e calculadas as médias aritméticas. Os dados foram tratados estatisticamente pelos testes ANOVA 1 fator seguido pelo teste t e t de student (p0,05). Os diferentes métodos de acabamento/polimento influenciaram na rugosidade de superfície dos dois compósitos testados, observando para Sof-lex e Enhance menores valores de Ra. Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the internal margin adaptation and integrity of Class 1 preparations using two composites types (bulk fill/conventional) with two placement methods (4/2 mm increments). Materials and Methods: Class 1 preparations of 4 mm × 4 mm dimensions were made on 30 extracted human mandibular molars. They were randomly divided into three groups; among them, in Group 1 (n = 10), cavities were filled with SureFil SDR Bulk Fill, Group 2 (n = 10) cavities were filled with Filtek Bulk Fill of 4 mm increments in both groups, and in Group 3 (n = 10), cavities were filled with conventional composite Filtek Z350 with 2 mm increments. Samples were sectioned occlusogingivally. Then, dye was on internal margins, and images of each specimen were recorded using a digital camera to evaluate the marginal integrity and adaptation of restorative material to the tooth surface with image analysis software. Then, collected data were put under the statistical analysis with analysis of variance test and post hoc Tukey's test. Results: There was no significant difference in overall dye penetration in bulk fill and conventional (incremental fill) composite resins; however, when dye penetration was evaluated at different locations, within enamel and mid-dentin, significantly more gap-free margins were found than at the pulpal interface. Filtek Bulk Fill and conventional composite (Filtek Z350) showed comparatively more dye penetration toward the pulpal interface compared to SDR Bulk Fill. Conclusion: There were no significant differences in percentage of gap-free margins between fill types for any of the composite materials. The proportions of gap-free margin were less at the pulpal interface and mid-dentin portions and enamel when filled with 4 and 2 mm increments.

The objective of this study was to determine the long-term water sorption, solubility and hygroscopic expansion of resin composites with and without incorporated short fibers. Three resin composites incorporating fibers were examined: EverX Posterior (EVX), NovoPro Universal (NPU) and NovoPro Flow (NPF). Four Particulate filled composites were used as controls: Filtek bulk Fill (FBF), Filtek one bulkfill (FBO), Filtek Supreme XTE (XTE), and Filtek Supreme Flow (XTEF). For sorption and solubility measurements, specimens were immersed in water for140 days, weighed at intervals, then dried for a further 42 days at 37±1°C. Laser micrometer measured diametral expansion. XTEF exhibited the highest sorption. The solubility range was between −1.4 to 4.1 μg/mm; XTEF had the highest solubility, with EVX demonstrating negative solubility. Hygroscopic expansion ranged between 1.4% for hydroxyapatite fiber reinforced composite (NPU) and 2.2% for E-glass fiber reinforced composite (EVX). A nano-fiber containing composite (NPU) had the most favorable outcomes compared to a range of composites.

Background/Aim: Prevention of caries initiation is a common concern for both clinicians and patients, among the effective ways of dental caries prevention is pits and fissures sealing. The current in vitro study was performed to assess the sealing ability and microleakage of three commercial flowable composites used for fissure sealing. Materials and Methods: The microleakage and sealing ability of three flowable resin composites (Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative, SureFil SDR Flow and Vertise Flow) were evaluated and compared with the sealing ability of conventional composite resin fissure sealant (Helioseal F). 120 extracted caries free premolars were collected and equally distributed into four groups (n=30). Fissure sealant flowable composites were applied according to manufacturer's instruction. Samples were subjected to thermocycling, then immersed in a methylene blue dye for 48 hours. After that, each tooth was sectioned in to three sections and examined by a stereomicroscope with a X15 magnification. Photographs were captured for all sections to show and scored for microleakage as 0, 1, 2 or 3. The collected data was organized and analyzed by Chi-Square test, p value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the three flowable composite vs Helioseal (p=0.000). There were statistically significant differences between Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative vs SureFil SDR Flow and Vertise Flow. Also, there was significant difference between SureFil SDR Flow vs Vertise Flow (p= 0.000 for all comparisons). Conclusions: The three tested flowable composite showed an acceptable sealing ability.

© 2021 Australian Society of Endodontology Inc.This study investigated the effect of different coronal restorations on the fracture resistance (FR) of immature teeth with simulated regenerative endodontic treatment. A total of 120 lower premolars were divided into eight groups. Except for negative control, the root canals were instrumented with rotary files and Peeso reamers. Fifteen instrumented teeth were acted as positive control (unrestorated). In the remaining 90 teeth, regenerative endodontic treatment procedures were performed. Ninety teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups according to coronal restoration type; Filtek Z550, Filtek Bulk fill Restorative (FBR), SDR+Filtek Z550, EverX+Filtek Z550, Ribbond+FBR and Ribbond+SDR+Filtek Z550. After thermal ageing, the restorated teeth were subjected to vertical loading force. FR values was obtained as follows: Negative control > Ribbond+FBR = Ribbond+SDR+Filtek Z550 > Filtek Z550 = FBR =SDR+Filtek Z550 = EverX+Filtek Z550 > Positive control, (P < 0.05). The use of Ribbond in combination with composite resin enhanced the FR of teeth.

Context:The quality of light curing units can profoundly influence mechanical properties of dental composite materials. Aim: To compare effect of Woodpecker RTA Mini-S and Elipar Deep Cure-L curing units onmechanical properties (compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and microhardness) of Filtek Bulk-Fill. Methods and Materials: A total of 32 samples of Filtek Bulk Fill composite were divided into 2 equal groups (n=16). 12 samples in each group were fabricated using a tooth shaped mold and 4 in circular rings to test compressive strength, microhardness and diametral tensile strength, respectively. Theblocks were evaluated for the above parameters using Universal Testing Machine and Vickers Microhardness Tester.Independent sample-t test was used in this study (p< 0.05). Results: The results of this study showed that the group of composites cured using Elipar Deep Cure-L curing unit showed better mechanical properties and the difference between the groups was statistically significant for compressive strength and diametral tensile strength (p < 0.05) Conclusion: It was concluded that a curing unit of higher intensity and quality of output used in conjugation with bulk fill composites are likely to give better results.

Purpose: This study investigated the cuspal deflection in premolar teeth restored with different bulk-fill resin composites with or without using a liner. Materials and Methods: 60 extracted human upper premolar teeth were used. The samples in this study were divided into three main groups (20 samples for each) according to the materials used; Each group was subdivided into two subgroups according to presence of liner. Standardized large MOD cavities were prepared. The distance between two reference points on cusp tips was measured before the restoration using a universal microscope. Then the teeth were restored with different bulk-fill resin composites (Filtek bulk fill, X-tra fil bulk fill and Activa Bioactive Restorative Material) with and without a liner (Activa Bioactive base/ liner). Second reading of cuspal deflection was measured 15 min after the completion of restorations. All samples were subjected to thermal cycling using thermal cycler machine. Then the third reading of cuspal deflection was measured. The data were statistically analyzed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests. Results: no statistically significant difference was found between the mean cuspal deflection of the three composites and cuspal deflection without liner showed statistically significantly higher mean value than with liner. Conclusion: The placement of Activa Bioactive base/liner beneath the bulk-fill resin composite restorations decreased cuspal deflection.

PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of the restorative material and matrix system on proximal contact tightness and morphological characteristics of class II restorations in primary molars. METHODS Occluso-mesial cavities in second primary artificial molars were randomly restored using different materials (Filtek Z500 or Filtek Bulk Fill composites or high-viscosity glass ionomer cement Ketac Universal) and different matrix system (Tofflemire, AutoMatrix, matrix band with ring, contoured sectional matrix) (n = 12). Proximal contact tightness was measured using a custom-made device in an Instron 3345, and proximal surface morphology and marginal adaptation were scored after digital scanning. Two-way ANOVA, Tukey and Fischer's exact tests were performed (P < 0.05). RESULTS Proximal contact tightness values were significantly influenced by the restorative material (P < 0.05), the matrix system (P < 0.001), and their interaction (P < 0.01). Both resin composites showed statistically differences in proximal shape according to the matrix used to restore and exhibited overhanging margins. Ketac Universal restorations showed similar morphology and gaps on the margins regardless of the matrix system. CONCLUSIONS Overall, both composite restorations achieved tighter proximal contact than those restored with the high-viscosity glass ionomer cement. None of the matrix systems tested provided a convex seamless proximal morphology.

Background/purpose: Despite the clinical appeal of restoring deep class II cavities in single increment using bulk-fill resin composite, sealing of bulk-filled composite restorations is a concern. This study evaluated interfacial adaptation of bulk-fill composite restoration to axial wall and gingival floor of class II cavities using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT). Materials and methods: Box-shaped class II cavities were prepared in extracted molars and divided into three groups (n = 7) according to adhesive used; Clearfil SE Bond 2 (SE2), Tetric-N Bond Self-Etch (TSE) or Tetric-N Bond Universal (TNU). All adhesives were applied in self-etch mode and according to manufacturers' recommendation. Then, preparations were bulk-filled with Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative resin composite and immersed in a contrast agent. Tomographic images of axial wall and gingival floor of each restoration were obtained by CP-OCT (IVS-300, Santec) with a central wavelength of 1330 nm and were imported to an image analysis software to quantify microleakage. AIM: The aim of the current in vitro study was to evaluate the changes in surface roughness of bulk fill composites after simulated toothbrushing with different dentifrices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three types of bulk fill resin composites were used in this study; 27 specimens of each composite resin were randomly divided into three main groups (n = 9). Each main group was further subdivided into three subgroups (n = 3). Each group was subjected to simulated toothbrushing with three different dentifrices. One-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effect of brushing using dentifrices on the surface roughness of each type of composite resin, followed by Tukey’s test at a significance level of p ≤ 0.5%. RESULTS: Results revealed that different effects on composite surface roughness were detected after simulating toothbrushing with different dentifrices. Lacalut toothpaste abrades more with Filtek Bulk Fill, Tetric N-Ceram then Bulk Fill SDR. Crest 3D toothpaste abrades more with Tetric N-Ceram, Bulk Fill SDR then Filtek Bulk Fill. BlanX toothpaste abrades more with Tetric N-Ceram, Bulk Fill SDR then Filtek Bulk Fill. CONCLUSION: Chemical composition of both resin composites and dentifrices plays an important role in influencing the degree of surface roughness of bulk fill composite resin restorations.

Background This study compared the quality of marginal sealing in the gingival wall of class II preparations of two low-shirinkage resins of the bulk fill type with a conventional resin isolated or associated with a glass ionomer cement (GIC). Material and methods 40 human molars were divided into 4 groups and 80 occlusal-mesial and occlusal-distal restorations were performed with the following materials: SureFil SDR flow, Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior, Z250 resins and Riva Light Cure GIC. 40 restorations were evaluated in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Elemental Microanalysis Spectrometry (EDS) initially and the remainder after a period of 6 months of aging in a 37 ± 5°C oven. An average of the silver penetration at each restoration was obtained in the two evaluations and the results were statistically analyzed in a descriptive and inferential way, through the paired t-Student and one-way ANOVA F-test. Results There were no significant statistical differences between the materials with respect to silver nanoinfiltration, except for the Bulk Fill Posterior/3M ESPE resin compared to the GIC and conventional resin in the final evaluation. Conclusions The low shrinkage resins showed a similar behavior in relation to the marginal sealing quality observed in the GIC or composite resin with the incremental technique, also presenting the advantage of simplicity in the technique of confection of the restorations and reduction of the time of work. Objectives : To compare the quantified radiopacity of five bulk fill composites in digital dental radiographs. Material and methods : An in-vitro observational study was performed with five dental restoration materials: I) Bulk Fill Surefil SDR+ flow® (Dentsply Sirona®, York, PA, USA), II) Bulk Fill Sonic Fill® (Kerr Corp.®, Orange, CA, USA); III) Filtek Bulk Fill flow® (3M Company®, Maplewood, MN, USA); IV) Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill® (Ivoclar Vivadent®, Schaan, Liechtenstein); and V) Aura® (SDI Ltd.®, Victoria, Australia). Digital radiographs were taken standardly from four samples of each composite (n = 20). The radiopacity inherent detected in the radiographs was quantified using a 9-level aluminum scale. Results : ANOVA and Tukey's test showed statistically significant differences between the radiopacity of all bulk fill composites (p Conclusion : Most of the bulk fill composites addressed in this study were distinguishable from each other based on their radiopacity. The identification of type and even brand of composites may be a promising task in human identification. However, this procedure remains challenging and the scientific evidence behind it is still scarce in the forensic literature.

Background: The purpose of dental education is to enable students to gain the knowledge and skills to provide the best service to their patients upon graduation. In order to achieve this, students need to work with a sufficient number of cases and use current materials throughout their education. Aim: The aim of this in vitro study, conducted in 2017, was to examine the surface roughness of two types of composites prepared with different polishing systems, constructed by either undergraduate or doctoral students. Methods: Bulk-fill (Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior) and nano-hybrid (Ceram.x One Universal) composites were polished using single-step (OneGloss Set) and multi-step (Sof-Lex System) systems. The finishing and polishing procedures were performed by ten dental undergraduate students and ten doctoral students. Average surface roughness values (Ra, µm) were measured using a profilometer. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (? = 0.05). Results: No statistically significant differences in Ra values were noted between operators with different levels of experience. Surface roughness was higher in the samples prepared using the single-step system than in those prepared using the multi-step system for both sample types tested in this study. Conclusion: Practitioner ability does not affect the performance of polishing systems. Regardless of the composite type, the single-step polishing system produces rougher surfaces than the multi-step system.

Objective: To assess the six-month clinical outcome of restorations of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) with two composite resins: Bulk-Fill and nanohybrid resin. Materials and methods: Fifty-one patients, with three NCCLs each, were randomly allocated into three restoration groups: Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk-Fill (TB); Filtek Bulk-Fill (FB); y Filtek Z350XT (Z350). Adhesive techniques and restorative procedures were performed according to the manufacturers’ instructions for the different materials. A 4mm increment was applied in TB and FB, and increments of ≤2mm depth were applied in Z350. Restorations were assessed by two calibrated examiners at baseline and at six months according to the FDI World Dental Federation guidelines (1: excellent, 2: acceptable, 3: sufficient, 4: unsatisfactory, 5: unacceptable) in Marginal Staining (MS), Fracture-Retention (FR), Marginal Adaptation (MA), Postoperative Sensitivity (S) and Caries (C). Wilcoxon test was used for the comparison between baseline and 6 months, and Kruskal-Wallis for the comparison of the three groups at six months (95% significance). Results: Forty-six patients with a total of 138 restorations attended a check-up at six months and were evaluated with excellent clinical outcome. In MS, 91.2% for Z350 and 97.8% for FB and TB; in FR, 97.8% for Z350 and 100% for FB and TB; in MA, 95.6% for Z350, 97.8% for FB and 100% for TN; in S, 95.6% for all three groups; and 100% for C. No statistically significant differences were found between the three groups nor in the comparison between the baseline and 6 months (p>0.05) Conclusion: No significant differences are observed between the three groups of resins in the parameters of MS, MA, S, FR and C regarding clinical outcome at six months.

The aim of this study was to assess the one year clinical performance of a new application method, the Fast-Modelling Bulk Technique (FMBT), in comparison to the Composite-Up Layering Technique (CULT) in posterior cavities. Thirty patients with two class I cavities on permanent human molars were enrolled in the present study. A total of sixty class I cavities were prepared and randomly divided according to the restoration technique used: 30 cavities restored by incremental layering technique and modelling of the last layer with Composite-Up Technique (CUT) using the composite Filtek Z250XT (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) and the other 30 restored by Bulk Filling technique and modelling of the last layer by Fast-Modelling Technique (FMT) using the composite Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA). Restorations were evaluated for up to one year by two observers according to Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) criteria, through clinical and radiological exams. Exact Fisher tests were used for statistical analysis. (p ≤ 0.05). From a biological perspective, at baseline, teeth restored with both techniques did not reveal any postoperative sensitivity. However, with time, FMBT showed less postoperative sensitivity and therefore more desirable results than CULT with a nonsignificant difference after one year (p &gt, 0.05). Concerning secondary caries, fracture of the material, and marginal adaptation, no significant difference was noted between both techniques (p &gt, 0.05). Regarding marginal staining, CULT resulted in more staining with a significant difference, as compared to FMBT (p &lt, 0.05). Upon radiological examination, FMBT showed a good marginal fit during the first year, whereas CULT showed small empty voids from baseline with a nonsignificant difference (p = 1.00). After one year of clinical function, both techniques showed promising results. The present study indicates that the new FMBT could have a positive effect on the marginal staining of resin composite.

Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color stability of different bulk fill composite resins after extrinsic staining with coffee. Material and methods: Forty-eight disk-shaped specimens (6 mm diameter x 2 mm thick) of each composite resin were prepared for color change test. The composite resins were divided into 4 groups (n=12): one conventional composite resin (Filtek Z250) and three bulk-fill composite resins (Filtek Bulk Fill, Aura Bulk Fill, and Opus Bulk Fill). The samples were stained with 20 mL coffee solution for 7 days, with the solution being replaced every 24 h. The aim of this study was to evaluate the depth of cure of conventional (Filtek Z350 and Esthet-X HD) and bulk fill resins composites (Filtek bulk fill flow and SDR) using different photoactivation methods. Samples were made using five discshaped matrices (1 mm high and 8 mm central diameter) with interposed polyester strips. The samples were photoactivated using different methods [continuous high-irradiance light (LCA), continuous low-irradiance light (LCB), and soft-start (SS)], maintaining 24 J/cm² radiant exposure. After 24h, Knoop microhardness test was performed at 5 depths (surface, 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm). The Knoop microhardness were analyzed by ANOVA two-way and Tukey’s test (5%). Conventional resins presented the highest results up to 2 mm depth, except for Esthet-X photoactived by LCB, which showed significant lower Knoop hardness from 2 mm depth. Bulk fill resins photoactivated with LCA and SS had the highest results in 4 mm depth. The LCA and SS photoactivation methods produce suitable photoactivation in conventional composites up to 2 mm and bulk fill up to 4 mm depth and the bulk fill composites present higher polymerization depth than conventional composites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Streptococcus mutans biofilm influence on the roughness (Ra), gloss (GU), surface hardness (KHN) and flexural strength (FS) of high viscosity bulk fill composites. Filtek Bulk Fill (FBF), Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill (TNC), X-tra fil Bulk Fill (XF) and Filtek Z350 (FZ) were used. Ten discs of each composite were prepared for Ra, KHN and GU and 20 bars for the FS. This study compared two resin composites with similar filler systems and different matrix compositions. The depth of cure (DoC), polymerization shrinkage, and marginal leakage were evaluated. A Filtek Bulk Fill resin composite (FB) and a Filtek Supreme resin composite (FS) were used. For the DoC and polymerization shrinkage, cylindrical specimens with different thicknesses were prepared. The DoC was attributed to the bottom/top ratios of Vickers microhardness numbers. For polymerization shrinkage, each specimen was firstly scanned using micro-computed tomography (&micro, CT) then cured for 20 s, then for 10 s, and then for 10 s, and they were rescanned between each curing time. Data were processed using the Mimics software. For marginal leakage, standardized 5 mm cavities were prepared in 90 molars. After etching and bonding, materials were packed according to groups: FB-bulk, FB-incremental, and FS-incremental, which were cured for 20, 30, and 40 s, respectively. After thermo-cycling, teeth were stored in 1% methylene blue dye for 24 h and then sectioned and observed for dye penetration. The results showed insignificant differences in the shrinkage and leakage between the different packing techniques and curing times of both materials. In conclusion, the introduction of a novel matrix into resin composite composition enabled bulk-filling in one layer up to 5 mm deep while keeping a tolerable polymerization shrinkage.

Objectives To compare the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and depth of cure (DOC) of bulk-fill composites cured by monowave (MW) and polywave (PW) LED units using different curing times. Methodology Three composites were tested: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TBF), Filtek Bulk Fill (FBF), and Tetric EvoCeram (T; control). Flat dentin surfaces treated with adhesive (AdheSE Universal®, Ivoclar Vivadent) were bonded with 4 mm cylindrical samples of each bulk-fill composite material (n=6) and cured with monowave (Satelec) or polywave (Bluephase Style) curing units for 10 or 20 seconds. After 24 hours, teeth were sectioned into individual 0.9 mm2 beams and tested for µTBS. Failure modes were analysed. Moreover, the DOC scrape test (IOS 4090) was completed (n=5) following the same curing protocols. Two-way ANOVA (a=0.05) was performed, isolating light-curing units. Results For samples cured with the MW light-curing unit, no significant effects were observed in the µTBS results between any of the resin composite brands and the curing times. Conversely, when resins were cured with a PW light unit, a significant effect was observed for TBF resin. In general, bulk-fill composites presented greater DOC and longer curing time resulted in higher DOC for all composites. Conclusion The µTBS of the composites to dentin was not affected by the curing mode of the resins, except for TBF cured with PW light unit. Bulk-fill composites exhibit greater DOC than conventional resin-based composites.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance of a bulk-fill and a conventional composite and a combination of both for coronal restoration of severely damaged primary anterior teeth. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study, 45 primary anterior teeth were randomly divided into three groups. After root canal preparation, the canals were filled with Metapex paste such that after the application of 1 mm of light-cure liner, 3 mm of the coronal third of the canal remained empty for composite post fabrication. Filtek Z250 conventional composite was used in group 1, Sonic-Fill bulk-fill composite was used in group 2 and Sonic-Fill with one layer of Filtek Z250 as the veneering were used in group 3. Adper Single Bond 2 was used in all groups. The teeth were thermocycled, and fracture resistance was measured by a universal testing machine. The mode of fracture was categorized as repairable or irreparable. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: The mean fracture resistance was 307.00±74.72, 323.31±84.28 and 333.30±63.96 N in groups 1 to 3, respectively (P=0.55). The mean fracture strength was 14.53±2.98, 15.08±2.82 and 15.26±3.02 MPa in groups 1 to 3, respectively (P=0.77). The frequency of repairable mode of failure was 80% for the conventional, 73.6% for the bulk-fill and 80% for the bulk-fill plus conventional group, with no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusions: Bulk-fill composites can be used for coronal reconstruction of severely damaged primary anterior teeth similar to conventional composites to decrease the treatment time in pediatric patients.

This study aimed to assess the effects of fiber incorporation on the contraction stress (CS), time to gelation (TG), and temperature rise (TR) features of two experimental resin-based composites (RBCs) in comparison to those of bulk-fill RBCs and conventional RBCs in simulated, clinically relevant cavities. CS over 300 s, TG and TR were assessed by a stress-strain analyzer (SSA T80) in two cavity configurations (2 × 4 × 4 mm3/4 × 4 × 4 mm3/configuration value $$ \raisebox{1ex}{$1$}\!\left/ \!\raisebox{-1ex}{$2$}\right. $$ and $$ \raisebox{1ex}{$1$}\!\left/ \!\raisebox{-1ex}{$3$}\right. $$ ) for two experimental RBCs, eight bulk-fill RBCs (EverX Posterior, Filtek Bulk Fill, SDR, SonicFill, Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill, Venus Bulk Fill, X-tra base, and X-tra Fill) and one RBC (Filtek Supreme XTE) by light curing (1200 mW/cm2) (n = 10). The experimental materials used were based on EverX Posterior with modifications made to the fiber and filler content. Statistical analyses were performed via ANOVA; multiple pair-wise comparisons were performed via Tukey’s test, and homogeneous subsets were identified (“multcomp” package, R). CS values ranged from 1.00 to 4.07 MPa (2 × 4 × 4 mm3) and from 0.97 to 2.49 MPa (4 × 4 × 4 mm3); TG values ranged from 1.31 to 4.05 s (2 × 4 × 4 mm3) and from 1.39 to 3.84 s (4 × 4 × 4 mm3). SDR values showed lowest stress values in both cavity configurations. The experimental composite with fibers presented significantly higher stress values than did the experimental composite without fibers. Bulk-fill RBCs showed lower levels of stress than did conventional RBCs. The incorporation of fibers had no positive impact on the CS and TG. Appropriate material selection may be essential to clinical success because certain RBCs exhibit higher CS, TG, and TR values.

The use of whitening dentifrices during oral hygiene may cause surface modifications such as color change (ΔE) and increase surface roughness (Ra) of composite resin. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of whitening dentifrices and mechanical brushing on color change and surface roughness of Bulk Fill (Filtek Bulk Fill - F) and (Aura Bulk Fill - A) composite resins. Materials and methods: Sixty cylindrical specimens were fabricated of each composite resin. After initial color evaluations (Konica Minolta CM-700d), with D65 standard illuminant, and the surface roughness (Surfcorder SE 1700, Kosalab), the specimens were assigned (n=10) according to the whitening dentifrice used: True White (T), Colgate Total 12 Professional Whitening (D), Luminous White Advanced (L). Specimens were submitted to mechanical brushing (10,000 cycles); new color and surface roughness evaluations were taken. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan test and Dunnet test were used to identify differences between groups (α=5%). Results: The results showed that the tooth brushing time promoted a significant increase in ΔE of the FT group. The FD group exhibited intermediate values of ΔE and was similar to all groups tested. There was a significant increase in the surface roughness of the AD and AT groups after the mechanical tooth brushing. Conclusion: The results showed no significant changes were observed in surface roughness for F groups after toothbrushing. It be concluded that the color change and surface roughness of the composite resins after toothbrushing are dependent on the interaction between the composition of the composite resin and the characteristics of the dentifrice.

Objectives: To investigate the marginal seal of new dentin substitutes using environmental SEM and evaluate the longevity of the seal after being subjected to thermal stresses. Methods: Four different dentin substitute materials (SDR, DENTSPLY; Sonic Fill, Kerr; Filtek Bulk Fill, 3M ESPE; and Fuji II LC, GC Corporation) were tested in this study. MOD cavities (4mm depth and half of the intercuspal distance width) were prepared on eighty human sound extracted premolars. Teeth were divided randomly into four groups according to the tested material. Each group was further divided into two subgroups (n=10): subgroup A; No thermal cycling was applied, and subgroup B; was subjected to thermal cycling (5±2 oC - 55±2 oC for 1000 cycles). The teeth were sectioned vertically through the resin composite parallel to their long axis in mesiodistal direction. Specimens were then tested for gap formations along pulpal dentin interface using Environmental SEM. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: Regardless of thermal cycling; Fuji II showed the statistically significantly highest mean gap distance (26.6 ± 12.6). Sonic Fill showed statistically significantly lower mean value (23.4 ± 4.3). There was no statistically significant difference between Bulk Fill (17.5 ± 1.7) and SDR (16.3 ± 1.5); both showed the statistically significantly lowest mean gap distance. Without thermal cycling, Sonic Fill showed the statistically significantly highest mean gap distance (19.4 ± 1.2). No statistically significant difference was found between Filtek Bulk Fill (16.1 ± 1.0), SDR (15.3 ± 0.9) and Fuji II (14.6 ± 0.7); all showed the statistically significantly lowest mean gap distances. While with thermal cycling, Fuji II (38.5 ± 0.9) showed the statistically significantly highest mean gap distance. Sonic Fill showed statistically significantly lower mean value (27.3 ± 0.9). There was no statistically significant difference between Filtek Bulk Fill (18.9 ± 0.7) and SDR (17.4 ± 1.2); both showed the statistically significantly lowest mean gap distance. Conclusions: Under the test conditions, Bulk Fill and SDR provided an adequate marginal seal, regarding gap distance, when compared to Sonic Fill and Fuji II. Meanwhile, thermal cycling significantly increases gap distance in all tested dentin substitutes, thus affecting longevity.

Objective This study evaluated the radiopacity of 2 bulk-fill resins (SonicFill and Filtek Bulk Fill) and a nanocomposite (Filtek Z350 XT) resin compared with enamel, dentin, and aluminum as measured with different exposure parameters. Study Design Resin disks were radiographed together with a 1-mm human tooth section and an aluminum stepwedge, at exposure times of 0.2 and 0.32 s, and source-image (S-I) distances of 30 and 40 cm, using complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and photostimulable phosphor systems. Grayscale values were measured using ImageJ software. Paired Student t tests were used to compare the effect of the receptor on grayscale values for each material. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effects of receptor, exposure parameters, and the resins on radiopacity. Results All resins exhibited greater radiopacity scores than enamel and were significantly different from each other. Filtek Z350 produced the lowest radiopacity values, whereas SonicFill produced the highest. The radiopacity values were higher on images acquired with CMOS receptors. Receptor type, exposure time, S-I distance, and material, as well as many interactions of these parameters, affected the radiopacity of the resins. Conclusion The tested resins complied with ISO 4049. Exposure parameters and digital receptors affected their radiopacity.

Background: In this study, we assess the effect produced on roughness and gloss of full-body bulk-fill materials by different finishing and polishing systems. Methods: Four full-body bulk-fill materials were tested: SonicFill2 (SF), Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative (FB), Tetric EvoCeram bulk-fill (EC), and Fill-Up! (FU). Sixty discs per material (2 mm in thickness and 7 mm in diameter) were obtained and randomly assigned (n = 15) to four finishing and polishing methods: Sof-Lex Spiral Wheels (SW), HiLusterPLUS (HL), Astropol (AP), and Opti1Step (OS). Surface roughness and gloss were then measured. Results: For roughness, material and surface treatment were significant factors (p &lt, 0.001) with SF = FB = EC &lt, FU and AP &lt, SW &lt, HL = OS. Material and surface treatment had a significant effect also on gloss (p &lt, 0.001), with SF &gt, FB = EC &gt, FU and SW &gt, AP &gt, HL &gt, OS. Conclusions: The tested combinations of bulk-fill and polishing systems provided clinically acceptable results with regard to roughness, while the outcome was poor for gloss. Multistep finishing/polishing systems were able to produce smoother surfaces on full-body bulk-fill materials compared to simplified ones.

Forty-eight human molars were divided into 6 groups according to dentin treatment and depth of restoration (n = 8): Group C3- Control/3 mm; Group C4- Control/4 mm; Group C5- Control/5 mm; Group EGCG3- EGCG/3 mm; Group EGCG4- EGCG/4 mm; and Group EGCG5- EGCG/5 mm. The teeth of the control groups were restored by the bulk fill technique (Filtek Bulk Fill), conditioning the dentin surface only with universal bonding system (Single Bond Universal). The teeth of the EGCG groups were also restored by the bulk filling technique, but conditioning the dentin surface with 0.5% EGCG for 30 s prior to the application of the adhesive system. Initial and final color readings were performed according to the CIE L*a*b* scale in UV-2450 spectroscope, before and after challenge of thermal cycling in coffee. The color change (ΔE) was then calculated based on the formula ΔE = [(ΔL*)2+(Δa*)2+(Δb*)2]½. The ΔE data were submitted to statistical tests of normality, two-way ANOVA and Tukey test to compare the means (p < 0.05). There was no statistically difference for both study factors analyzed (EGCG application and restoration depth), as well as the interaction between both, after aging in coffee (p > 0.05). It was concluded that the previous application of EGCG did not cause a significant color change at the dentin-resin interface. Objective. Composites sorption and solubility can be precursors of several chemical and physical processes, which lead to deleterious effects on the polymer structure. This study evaluated the effect of mouthwashes on solubility and sorption of composite resins. Materials and Methods. Forty-two specimens of each evaluated composite (Filtek Bulk Fill Flow, Opallis Flow, Durafill VS, and Filtek Z350) were prepared and randomized into seven groups for each solution (mouth rinses with and without alcohol and distilled water) and stored for seven days. Solubility and sorption tests were performed according to ISO4049. Data were analyzed using 2-way-ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test for means comparison (α=0.05). In addition, paired t-test was performed to analyze the alcohol effect on the studied composite resin properties. Results. Listerine Cool Mint (containing alcohol in its composition) caused the greatest degree of sorption for all composites tested in comparison to other rinses, while for solubility this behavior was observed for Opallis Flow and Durafill VS composite resins (p<0.05). Regarding the composites, Opallis Flow showed the highest sorption and solubility values in general (p<0.05). Conclusion. Overall, the sorption and solubility of composites were higher in mouthwashes containing alcohol in its composition, with Opallis Flow being the most affected composite resin.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine and correlate the degree of conversion (DC) with Vickers hardness (VH) and translucency parameter (TP) with the depth of cure (DoC) of five bulk-fill composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six specimens per group, consisting of Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill ("TEC Bulk," Ivoclar Vivadent), SonicFill (Kerr), SDR Smart Dentin Replacement ("SDR," Dentsply), Xenius base ("Xenius," StickTech; commercialized as EverX Posterior, GC), Filtek Bulk Fill flowable ("Filtek Bulk," 3M ESPE), and Tetric EvoCeram ("TEC," control), were prepared for DC and VH: two 2-mm-thick layers, each light-cured for 10 s; one 4-mm bulk-fill, light-cured for 10 or 20 s; and one 6-mm bulk-fill, cured for 20 s. DC was measured using a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, VH using a Vickers hardness tester. DoC and TP were measured using an acetone-shaking test and a spectrophotometer, respectively. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Pearson's correlation (α = 0.05). RESULTS: DC and VH ranged between 40-70 % and 30-80 VHN, respectively. TEC Bulk, Xenius, and SonicFill, bulk-filled as 4-mm-thick specimens, showed bottom-to-top hardness ratios above 80 % after 20 s curing. A positive linear correlation was found for bottom DC and VH. An average DC ratio of 0.9 corresponded to a bottom-to-top VH ratio of 0.8. CONCLUSIONS: Sculptable bulk-fills require 20 s, whereas 10 s curing time was sufficient for flowable bulk-fills using a high-intensity LED unit. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different fabrication techniques on the fracture strength of the composite resin-based inlay restorations of endodontically treated molars. Objective This study evaluated physical and mechanical properties and characterized the filler particles of seven composites. Materials and methods Filtek Supreme (FS, 3M Oral Care), Forma (FO, Ultradent), Charisma Diamond (CD, Kulzer), Spectra Smart (SS, Dentsply), Filtek Bulk Fill (FB, 3M Oral Care), Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TB, Ivoclar), and Cention N (Ivoclar) in self- (CNSC) or dual-curing (CNDC) were evaluated. Fillers size, shape, and content were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray dispersive energy spectroscopy (EDX). Disk-shaped specimens (n = 5) were prepared for sorption (SP) and solubility (SL). Flexural strength and elastic modulus were tested at 24 h and 12 months (n = 10). Degree of conversion (DC%) and maximum rate of polymerization (Rpmax) were evaluated using micro-Raman spectroscopy. SP and SL results were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA and Dunn's pairwise test (α = 0.05). Mechanical properties were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). DC% of CNSC and CNDC was compared by independent t-test (α = 0.05). Rpmax results were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results The composites differed regarding filler size, shape, and content. CD and CNSC showed lower SP than FS. SS had lower SL than CNSC and CNDC. CNDC presented higher DC% than CNSC. CD, TB, and CNDC showed the highest Rpmax. TB, CNSC, and CNDC showed the lowest 24-h flexural strengths. Mechanical properties of CD did not decrease, while FO, TB, and CNSC showed a significant reduction after storage. Conclusions Monomer composition and fillers characteristics greatly influenced the physico-mechanical properties of the tested composites.

Objectives: The polymerization shrinkage of methacrylate-based composites is among the most important causes of failure of composite restorations. The manufacturers claim that bulk-fill composites have a lower polymerization shrinkage than conventional composites. This study aimed to assess the polymerization shrinkage of five bulk-fill composites in comparison with a conventional composite. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro experimental study, composite discs (n=30) were fabricated using everX Posterior (EXP), Filtek Bulk-Fill Posterior (FBP), SonicFill 2 (SF2), Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill (TNB), X-tra fil (XF), and Filtek Z250 conventional composite at the center of a metal ring bonded to a microscope slide and were covered with a coverslip. Composite resins (RC) Bulk fill, Bulk filaments and a nanoparticulate RC were stored in four different solutions (n = 10) and measured in three times. The specimens (CP) were made with dimensions of 6 mm in diameter by 2 mm in height for the group of RC nanoparticulate and 6 mm in diameter by 4 mm in height for the other RC. The CPs were kept in an oven at 37ºC for 24 hours in distilled water and after being submitted to the Knoop microhardness test (KHN). The following solutions were stored in those solutions: AD - Distilled water; EA - Ethanol-water solution (75%), AC- 0.02N citric acid and AN- 0,02N Nitric Acid. The CPs were immersed in each solution at 37oC for 7.30 and 60 days, for each of these periods the KNH test was performed.
