This article investigates the role of mandatory interim financial reporting in financial analysts' annual earnings forecast errors. We provide large-scale evidence from 49 countries that a mandatory quarterly (as compared to semi-annual) reporting regime is associated with lower analysts' annual earnings forecast errors. This conjecture is further supported when we exploit an exogeneous change in the mandatory frequency regime from a semi-annual to a quarterly reporting mandate in Japan. Consistent with an improvement in the information environment, our findings are more pronounced for firms and analysts subject to higher information acquisition costs and in countries where the institutional setting is less able to meet analysts' information needs. We corroborate this conjecture by documenting that more frequent mandatory reporting decreases analysts' forecast dispersion and improves the profitability of their stock recommendations. Overall, our findings extend the research on the role of the institutional setting in analysts' output, suggesting that the mandate of more frequent reporting improves analysts' forecasting process. Exploiting two quasi-natural experiments, we find that firms increase emissions of toxic pollution following decreases in analyst coverage. The effects are stronger for firms with low initial analyst coverage, poor corporate governance, and firms subject to less stringent monitoring by environmental regulators. Decreases in environmental-related questions raised in conference calls, an increased cost of monitoring to institutional shareholders, reductions in pollution abatement investment, and the weakening of internal governance related to environmental performance are channels through which reduced analyst coverage contributes to increases in firm pollution. This paper investigates the association between life insurers' voluntary disclosure of embedded value (EV), an unregulated market-driven fair value measure, and analyst forecast accuracy and dispersion. EV is an estimate of the present value of future net cash flows from in-force life insurance business. Advocates of this disclosure believe that EV is a better measure of economic performance than traditional GAAP measures. Others argue that corporate management has discretion in estimating and reporting EV. Further, analysts may have access to information that allows the development of possibly more accurate estimation metrics in the absence of EV disclosure. It is then an empirical issue to determine whether EV disclosure has any incremental effect on analysts' forecast properties. Using a multi-country setting, we find that EV disclosure is positively associated with analysts' earnings forecast accuracy and negatively related to forecast dispersion. This result is consistent with the alternative hypothesis that disclosure of EV provides a richer information set that enriches analysts' forecasts beyond their own in-house developed surrogates. We investigate the effect of scrutiny (e.g. credit ratings, analyst reports, or mandatory disclosures) on the security design problem of a privately informed issuer. We show that scrutiny has important implications for both the form of security designed and the amount of inefficient retention of cash flows. The model predicts that issuers will design informationally sensitive securities (i.e. levered equity) when scrutiny is sufficiently intense. Otherwise, issuers opt for a standard debt contract. Scrutiny increases efficiency by decreasing issuers' reliance on retention to signal quality and, perhaps counterintuitively, decrease price informativeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combining novel data on analyst employment history and mutual fund commission payments, we show that client funds generate higher returns on stocks for which they have access to research by industry expert analysts. The outperformance is greater when funds are more important clients and cannot be attributed to tipping. Client funds place modestly higher weights on stocks covered by industry expert analysts and allocate more commissions to brokers providing such coverage. For identification, we exploit exogenous analyst coverage disruptions. Our findings contribute to the debate on whether mutual funds obtain any investment value from access to analysts through the soft-dollar arrangement. We show that analyst behavior changes in response to a randomly assigned shock that exogenously varies the timeliness and cost of accessing mandatory disclosures in the cross-section of investors: analysts reduce coverage and issue less optimistic, more accurate, less bold, and less informative forecasts. Our evidence indicates that analysts reduce a strategic component of their behavior: the changes are stronger among analysts with more strategic incentives like affiliated or retail-focused analysts. We conclude that mandatory disclosure can substitute for analyst information production, which is constrained by investors' ability to verify forecasts using corporate filings. This study investigates the impact of firm-level investor sentiment derived from Twitter and news media on herding behavior among contributors on Estimize, a leading platform for crowdsourced earnings forecasts. The findings show that sentiment gleaned from tweets and news media content positively influences herding among Estimize contributors. Notably, herding intensifies when Twitter and news sentiment polarities align, while divergent sentiment polarities diminish this herding effect. Additionally, the analysis indicates that firms with investment-grade ratings and those characterized by low valuation uncertainty are particularly prone to sentiment-driven herding. Importantly, positive sentiment is identified as having a more potent influence on herding behavior than negative sentiment. By focusing on Estimize contributors, this study offers insights into how firm-level sentiment cues shape the crowd's herding behavior, offering new perspectives on how different media sources shape the wisdom of the crowd. Despite the prevalence and importance of humor in interpersonal communication, the disclosure literature is silent on the use of humor in the context of corporate communication. Using a sophisticated machine learning algorithm, we identify managers' successful uses of humor during public earnings conference calls. When managers use humor on an earnings call, stock market returns and analyst forecast revisions following the call are more positive, primarily because of a muted response to negative earnings news. Consistent with managers' successful use of humor being a favorable signal of future firm performance, we find no evidence of a return reversal over the subsequent quarter, and managers' use of humor predicts more favorable news at the subsequent quarter's earnings announcement. Our study provides new evidence on the use of humor in corporate disclosures, and our findings indicate that humor can meaningfully influence the market response to public earnings conference calls. We investigate the role of financial analysts in product quality failures. Relying on information about product recalls, we first show that analyst coverage on average reduces product quality, particularly when managers face greater short-term pressure from institutional investors. However, after identifying a subgroup of analysts who raise questions on product-related issues in earnings conference calls, we find that coverage by these "product analysts" enhances rather than compromises product quality. Firms with greater product analyst coverage are also more likely to retire low-quality products. Additional analysis demonstrates that product analysts help safeguard product quality by further probing into product-related matters and issuing more timely recommendation downgrades after firms announce product deficiencies. The aims of this paper are to present the methodology, derived mathematical expressions for determining the individual factor influences and the adaptation for the conditions of dynamic deterministic factor analysis and the results of the application of the developed new method for deterministic factor analysis, called the averaged chain substitution method. After formulating the concept of the considered approach, all mathematical expressions used to create models containing up to four factor variables are presented and summarized. The scientific novelty of the study is in the obtained new equations for determining the individual factor influences by the method of averaged chain substitution and the method of analogy for five-factor additive or difference-multiplicative and for five-factor additive or difference-multifactor models with an additive or different part in the numerator of the factor model. The presented mathematical expressions accurately and unambiguously quantify the impact of individual factor influences for all types of factor models and thus significantly expand the applicability of the averaged chain substitution method in the theory and practice of financial-economic analysis. The proposed formalization and algorithmization of the evaluation process makes the method easy to apply by all economic and financial analysts for the purposes of deterministic factor analysis. Current study aimed at exploring the impact of expert systems components (knowledge base, inference engine, explanation component, user interface, acquisition component) on organizational financial efficiency from perspective of financial managers within industrial organizations in Jordan. The quantitative deductive approach was utilized, and a questionnaire was handed to a convenient sample of (331) financial managers and analysts within industrial organizations. SPSS was adopted in order to process and analyze primary data; results of study accepted the main hypothesis which was articulated "expert systems components have statistically significant influence on financial efficiency" with r = 0.656 and a substantial relationship between "expert systems" and "financial Efficiency". This relationship accounted for 43.1% of the variance in the examined variable (the dependent variable). Regarding sub-variables, it was seen that the highest in influence was "user interface" scoring an r= 0.592 and a medium relationship with financial efficiency that accounted for 35.1% of the variance. Study recommended the need for expert systems to be able to reason and explain the reasons for the recommendations they make and to respond to simple questions raised by non-specialists. Consistent with the monitoring function played by financial analysts, we find that greater analyst coverage leads to the same extent of improvement in the quantity and quality of environmental information disclosed by the firm. This result is remarkably robust after conducting a difference‐in‐differences analysis that exploits brokerage closures and mergers as an exogenous decrease in analyst coverage, as well as using an instrumental variable approach. The positive influence of analyst coverage on corporate environmental disclosure is particularly evident for firms that cause high environmental damage, firms with low information asymmetry and those followed by analysts with superior experience, accuracy and reputation. In response to growing environmental challenges, there is an urgent need to understand how corporations can leverage new technologies to boost sustainability and eco‐innovation. This study addresses this need by investigating Artificial Intelligence adoption (AIA) influence on green innovation (greenovation) performance among Chinese firms as China's expanding digital economy and severe ecological pressures make it unique study context. Specifically, panel data on 8722 firm‐year observations from Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2017 is analyzed to test the relationship. The main findings show that higher AIA is associated with increased greenovation, measured through green patents. This positive effect is more pronounced among privately‐owned enterprises versus state‐owned enterprises. Additionally, financial analysts are found to strengthen the AI‐greennovation link through information dissemination and scrutiny. Importantly, the study findings are robust and validated through a battery of tests, including change regression, instrumental variable methods, propensity score match (PSM), and sysGMM. Overall, this study provides novel empirical evidence that AI holds promise as an enabler of corporate eco‐innovation. The findings have crucial implications for research and practice regarding leveraging digital technologies for sustainability, especially in emerging economies like China that is undergoing rapid technological change. This paper examines whether and when corporate disclosures about a firm's exposure to climate risks matter to financial analysts. More specifically, we investigate the association between climate risk disclosure (CRD) and two properties of financial analysts' earnings forecasts (accuracy and dispersion). We predict that climate risk financial materiality at the industry level moderates this association. Using a sample of 2184 US nonfinancial firm‐year observations over the period 2010–2016, we show that CRD is associated with higher forecast precision and lower dispersion only when climate risks are perceived by investors as being financially material at the industry level. We also find that while corporate disclosures about transition risks are not associated with financial analyst forecast properties, 10‐K disclosures about climate‐related material physical risks reduce analyst forecast error and dispersion. There are significant differences among sell-side analysts in how frequently they revise recommendations. We show that much of this variation is an analyst-individual trait. Analysts who change recommendations more slowly make recommendations that are more influential and generate better portfolio returns. Slower-revising analysts tend to change recommendations following corporate news that are harder to interpret by nonstock experts, and our evidence suggests that their investment value derives from their ability to better interpret hard-to-assess information. On average, analysts change recommendations less frequently as their career progresses; however, recommendation speed-style is the dominant predictor of their recommendation value. Publicly listed firms have discretion to disclose (or not) advertising spending in their annual (10-K) reports. The disclosure of advertising spending can provide valuable information because advertising is a leading indicator of future performance. However, estimates of advertising spending are available from data providers, arguably mitigating the need for its formal disclosure. This article argues that firms' disclosure of advertising spending provides more complete and public information and therefore lowers investor uncertainty about future firm performance (idiosyncratic risk). Empirical analyses show that the effect is largely driven by the negative effect of disclosure of advertising spending on analyst uncertainty. Consistent with agency theory, the negative effect of the disclosure of advertising spending on analyst uncertainty is stronger for firms with more financial resources, firms with lower disclosure quality, and firms that are in more competitive industries. Additional analyses show that the disclosure of advertising spending has a significant positive effect on firm value in specific sectors. These results, therefore, identify an avenue for chief marketing officers to play a greater role in managing investor relations. In addition, they suggest strong merit for the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Accounting Standards Board to reconsider current regulations governing advertising spending disclosure. We study the importance of peer effects among sell-side analysts who work at the same brokerage house, but cover different firms. By mapping the information network within each brokerage, we identify analysts who occupy central positions in the network. Central analysts incorporate more information from their coworkers and produce better research. Using shocks to network structures around brokerage mergers, we identify the influence of peer effects and the importance of industry expertise on analysts' performance. A portfolio strategy that exploits the forecast revisions of central analysts earns up to 24% per annum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using satellite imagery of retail firms' parking lots to measure time-varying local firm-specific performance, we document that analysts incorporate local information into their forecasts. Analysts rely more on local signals when less firm-wide information is available. This incorporation of noisy local firm information has firm-level implications. Examining across industries, we find causal evidence that geographic concentration of analysts increases consensus forecast errors and decreases firm liquidity. These effects are stronger for harder-to-value stocks. This study offers a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of a fundamentals-based investment criterion (HSBC's Rating to Economic Profit – REP). By employing a large sample of US-listed firms over a 12-year time-period and conducting univariate, multivariate and portfolio analyses, we provide robust empirical results that support the ability of REP to explain contemporaneous stock market valuations, justify financial analysts' target prices, and predict one-year ahead stock returns. Through content analysis of selected financial analysts' equity research reports, we also provide some descriptive evidence of the usefulness of accrual accounting numbers over dividends for valuation purposes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first academic study that offers a comprehensive analysis of REP as a value-based stock screening method that should be of interest to market-based accounting researchers, valuation educators, and capital market participants. Synopsis The research problem The purpose of this study was to examine the market reaction to sell-side analyst recommendation revisions issued under an integrated reporting (IR) approach. Motivation Advocates of this corporate reporting approach argue that IR enhances capital markets' information environment by rendering investors better able to assess the value creation process of a firm. Recent empirical studies corroborate this argument. Considering the central role of financial intermediaries, we investigated whether the informativeness of analyst recommendation revisions is associated with the adoption of IR and the quality of integrated reports. The test hypotheses We tested whether the informativeness of analyst recommendation revisions decreases or increases after the mandatory adoption of an IR approach. Furthermore, we tested whether the informativeness is negatively or positively related to the quality of the released integrated report after the mandatory adoption of an IR approach. Target population We focused on the South African capital market, which is the only setting where IR is mandated. We utilized a sample of 3,201 recommendation revisions made within a 3-year window around the mandatory IR adoption. Adopted methodology This study used ordinary least square (OLS) regressions and applied difference-in-differences as well as instrumental variable approaches. Analyses We modeled the market reaction to the recommendation revisions as a function of the period in which the recommendations are announced (i.e., pre- or post-adoption), along with other factors affecting market reaction. In subsequent tests, we also modeled the market reaction to the recommendation revisions as a function of the quality of a firm's integrated report. Findings We found strong evidence that analysts' revisions exhibited economically and statistically significantly lower information content under IR. Moreover, we found that upgrades and downgrades issued in the post-adoption period were less informative when issued for firms with high-quality integrated reports. The regional industry network (RIN) is a type of financial network derived from industry networks that possess the capability to describe the connections between specific industries within a particular region. For most investors and financial analysts lacking extensive experience, the decision-support information provided by industry networks may be too vague. Conversely, RINs express more detailed and specific industry connections both within and outside the region. As RIN analysis is domain-specific and current financial network analysis tools are designed for generalized analytical tasks and cannot be directly applied to RINs, new visual analysis approaches are needed to enhance information exploration efficiency. In this study, we collaborated with domain experts and proposed V4RIN, an interactive visualization analysis system that integrates predefined domain knowledge and data processing methods to support users in uploading custom data. Through multiple views in the system panel, users can comprehensively explore the structure, geographical distribution, and spatiotemporal variations of the RIN. Two case studies were conducted and a set of expert interviews with five domain experts to validate the usability and reliability of our system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Both the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and the popular press have routinely criticized firms for the complexity of their financial disclosures. This study aims to investigate how financial analysts respond to the tone complexity of firm disclosures. Design/methodology/approach: Using approximately 20,000 earnings conference call transcripts of S&P 1,500 firms between 2005 and 2015, the authors first calculate the abnormal negative tone, the measure of tone complexity; then use such tone measure in econometric models to examine analyst forecast behavior. The authors also test the robustness of the results under different model specifications, tone word lists and alternative tone measure calculations. Findings: Consistent with the notion that analysts respond to the information demand from investors and incur more costs and effort to analyze firm disclosure when the tone is more complex, the authors find that higher tone complexity is positively and significantly associated with more analyst following, longer report duration, more forecast revisions, larger forecast error and larger forecast dispersion. In addition, the authors find that tone complexity has a long-term impact on analyst following but has a limited long-term impact on analyst report duration, analyst revision, forecast error and dispersion. Originality/value: This study complements existing literature by highlighting the information role of financial analysts and by providing evidence that analysts incorporate the management tone disclosed during conference calls to adjust their forecasting behaviors. Using a large international sample of 24,293 observations from 3,991 unique firms in 56 countries, we examine the role of financial analysts in the relationship between voluntary corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting and firm value. We find that after controlling for firms' CSR performance ratings and other factors, voluntary CSR reporting increases firm value in countries worldwide, and analysts strengthen the positive relationship between CSR reporting and firm value. More importantly, our results show that the positive role of analysts in the relationship between CSR reporting and firm value varies with country-level institutional characteristics, such as the level of investor protection, the development of capital markets and the analyst profession, and stakeholder orientation. Furthermore, the positive role of financial analysts varies according to CSR reporting characteristics, including CSR reporting assurance, choice of assurer, CSR reporting coverage, CSR reporting quantity, and length of CSR report. We also find that financial analysts can strengthen the positive association between CSR reporting and firm value for CSR disclosures published in all types of media (standalone, annual report-based, and web-based CSR disclosures). Several prior studies indicate that financial analysts exhibit systematic underreaction to information; others illustrate systematic overreaction. We assume that cognitive biases influence analysts' behavior and that these misreactions are not systematic, but they depend on the nature of news. As cognitive biases intensify in situations of high ambiguity, we distinguish between bad and good news and investigate the impact of intangible assets—synonymous with high uncertainty and risk—on financial analysts' reactions. We explore the effect of information conveyed by prior-year earnings announcements on the current-year forecast error. Our findings in the Saudi financial market reveal a tendency for overreaction to positive prior-year earnings change (good performance) and positive prior-year forecast errors (good surprise). Conversely, there is an underreaction to the negative prior-year earnings change (bad performance) and negative prior-year forecast error (bad surprise). Notably, analysts exhibit systematic optimism rather than systematic underreaction or overreaction. The results also highlight that the simultaneous phenomena of overreaction and underreaction is more pronounced in high intangible asset firms compared to low intangible asset firms. The gender pay gap among firms' upper echelons is a prominent issue not only because it concerns equality in the workplace, but also because it may impact firms' culture and performance. Responding to calls to better understand how stakeholder expectations and pressures might influence the gender pay gap, this study examines the role of a key stakeholder group, i.e., financial analysts, in curbing the executive gender pay gap. Drawing on the stakeholder and attention-based views of the firm, we contend that analyst coverage may counter the pay gap by: (a) raising other stakeholders' attention on discriminatory pay-setting practices; and (b) reducing information asymmetries in the executive labor market. Both firm- and individual-level econometric analyses on a sample of 38,211 executives working in 3,473 firms support our hypothesis: an increase in analyst firm coverage helps to reduce the gender pay gap among the top executives of S&P 1500 firms between 1992 and 2016. Post-hoc analyses—that use the closure of brokerage houses as an exogeneous shock—lend further support to our claims. Our results advance the literature at the nexus of the stakeholder theory and attention-based view of the firm by unveiling the role of intermediaries in channeling the limited stakeholder attention to certain firms, contributing to the development of a stakeholder-based theory of executive pay. This study explores the role of the asymmetrical influence of stock market reaction to the fluctuations in US dollars against the domestic currencies of the South Asian region. The symmetrical Panel based autoregressive distributed lag model (PARDL) model and panel‐based non‐linear autoregressive distributed lag model (NARDL) model with the Pooled Mean Group Approach (PMG) approach were employed to estimate the impact of stock market bullish and bearish behaviour on local currency variabilities of the South Asian region. The results show that during the pre‐economic recession regime, negative fluctuations in stock indexes had a direct association with exchange rate fluctuations for a longer period. However, after the crisis, both negative and positive stock index shocks have formulated an indirect or inverse association with exchange rate fluctuations. These findings pose important practical implications for the short‐term and long‐term shareholders and financial analysts. Hence, it is recommended that shareholders and financial analysts should base their investment in South Asian stock indices on negative and positive shocks since the non‐linear connectivity between both variables also exhibits regime dependence characteristics. We examine the effect of analyst teams' gender diversity on the accuracy of their earnings forecasts. We find that, compared with single-gender analyst teams, mixed-gender analyst teams generate more accurate earnings forecasts and have less optimism bias. The desirable effect of mixed-gender analyst teams on the accuracy of earnings forecasts is more significant in the highly educated or experienced analyst teams, in smaller brokerages with fewer star analysts, and in firms audited by non-Big -Four accounting firms or with less analyst coverage. Further studies find that, female analysts who work in teams produce more accurate earnings forecasts than they work individually. In addition, when a single-gender analyst team transforms into a mixed-gender analyst team, its reports have more accuracy and less optimism bias than before, and vice versa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate changes in analysts' accrual-related forecast optimism after the disappearance of the accrual anomaly. We find that such optimism persists in the no-anomaly period, particularly when analysts' incentives are aligned with greater optimism (i.e., for firms with high external financing). By contrast, the accrual-related forecast optimism declines when analysts' incentives for optimism are low and in circumstances where analysts would have been more aware of accruals information after the anomaly became publicized (i.e., when analysts issued a cash flow forecast). These findings suggest that analysts' incentives can offset forecast improvements that their heightened accrual awareness would otherwise allow. In 2007, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) decided to allow foreign private issuers to file financial statements prepared according to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) without reconciliation to U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Using a sample of foreign private issuers from 35 countries/regions during the period of 2005 to 2008, this article investigates how the elimination of the 20-F reconciliation affects financial analysts. We find that it significantly reduces analyst coverage but has no impact on forecast accuracy. We show that analysts who are greatly affected are more likely to terminate their coverage of IFRS firms after the SEC's rule than other analysts. In addition, we hypothesize and find that eliminating the 20-F reconciliation has a greater impact on firms whose 20-F reconciliation is more useful to analysts. For these firms, the elimination of the 20-F reconciliation significantly reduces both analyst coverage and forecast accuracy.
