Abstract

In this paper we propose a novel, general purpose, algorithm to optimize functions $l\colon \mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ not assumed to be convex or differentiable or even continuous. The main idea is to sequentially fit a sequence of parametric probability densities, possessing a concentration property, to $l$ using a Bayesian update followed by a reprojection back onto the chosen parametric sequence. Remarkably, with the sequence chosen to be from the exponential family, reprojection essentially boils down to the computation of expectations. Our algorithm therefore lends itself to Monte Carlo approximation, ranging from plain to Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods. The algorithm is therefore particularly simple to implement and we illustrate performance on a challenging Machine Learning classification problem. Our methodology naturally extends to the scenario where only noisy measurements of $l$ are available and retains ease of implementation and performance. At a theoretical level we establish, in a fairly general scenario, that our framework can be viewed as implicitly implementing a time inhomogeneous gradient descent algorithm on a sequence of smoothed approximations of $l$. This opens the door to establishing convergence of the algorithm and provide theoretical guarantees. Along the way, we establish new results for inhomogeneous gradient descent algorithms of independent interest.

Abstract

The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) is a new experimental facility whose construction is starting in Frascati, Rome, Italy; its main goals are improving the understanding of plasma-wall interactions and supporting the development of ITER and DEMO. DTT will be equipped with a Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) based on negative deuterium ions, designed to inject 10 MW of power to the tokamak. A fundamental system for the good operations of the DTT NBI will be its Gas injection and Vacuum System (GVS). Indeed, the efficiency of the entire NBI strongly depends on the good performance of its GVS. The GVS for DTT NBI will be composed of two systems working in parallel: a grounded section connected to the main vacuum vessel, and a high voltage part connected to the ion source vessel and working at -510 kV voltage. The grounded part will feature a fore vacuum system (given by screw and roots pumps) plus a high vacuum system based on turbo-molecular pumps located on the side walls of the vessel and Non-Evaporable Getter (NEG) pumps located inside the vessel on the upper and lower surfaces. On the other hand, the high voltage part will feature a fore vacuum system (given by two compact screw pumps mounted on the external surface for the ion source vessel) plus a high vacuum system based on turbo-molecular pumps also located on the sidewalls of the ion source vessel. A dedicated deuterium gas injection will feed the process gas to the ion source and the neutralizer. Abstract

Image-based virtual try-on strives to transfer the appearance of a clothing item onto the image of a target person. Prior work focuses mainly on upper-body clothes (e.g. t-shirts, shirts, and tops) and neglects full-body or lower-body items. This shortcoming arises from a main factor: current publicly available datasets for image-based virtual try-on do not account for this variety, thus limiting progress in the field. To address this deficiency, we introduce Dress Code, which contains images of multi-category clothes. Dress Code is more than 3x larger than publicly available datasets for image-based virtual try-on and features high-resolution paired images (1024x768) with front-view, full-body reference models. To generate HD try-on images with high visual quality and rich in details, we propose to learn fine-grained discriminating features. Specifically, we leverage a semantic-aware discriminator that makes predictions at pixel-level instead of image- or patch-level. Extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates that the proposed approach surpasses the baselines and state-of-the-art competitors in terms of visual quality and quantitative results. Abstract

Influenza A virus (IAV) can cause high morbidity and mortality in domestic and wild avian species and it is able to infect mammals as well. IAV in cats is sporadic and self-limiting but the recent findings of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) with genetic signatures of mammalian adaptation, in domestic cats, has raised new concerns about the potential role of cats in the virus ecology. The present study aimed to investigate the circulation of IAV in companion animals' shelters in North-eastern Italy. All samples were collected from feral cats living in feline colonies that were hosted in the companion animals' shelters for the requisite period to administer the veterinary treatments. Between 2021 and 2022, 389 oropharyngeal swabs and 279 sera were collected. All swabs tested negative for IAV and the only one ELISA positive serum sample resulted H5 positive by HI test with a titer of 1:80. Despite the sporadic occurrence of influenza in cats, continuous monitoring is crucial due to the evolving zoonotic nature of the virus.

Abstract

Mycoplasmas are known as the minimalist microorganisms in the microbes’ world. Their minimalist nature makes them highly sensitive to the environmental conditions and limits their ability to survive for extended periods outside their animal host. Nevertheless, there are documented instances of mycoplasma transmission over significant distances and this phenomenon may be linked to relatively unexplored abilities of mycoplasmas, such as their capacity to synthesize biofilm—the predominant mode of bacterial growth in nature. The authors decided to establish a method aimed at inducing the clustering of mycoplasma planktonic cells within a biofilm in vitro and subsequently assess the capacity of certain avian mycoplasmas to synthesize a biofilm. A total of 299 avian mycoplasma isolates were included in the study, encompassing both pathogenic (Mycoplasma gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis, M. iowae) and non-pathogenic species (M. gallinaceum, M. gallinarum, M. iners and M. pullorum). The authors successfully demonstrated the feasibility of inducing avian mycoplasmas to synthetize in vitro a biofilm, which can be visually quantified. The only species that did not produce any biofilm was M. iowae. In general, the pathogenic mycoplasmas produced greater quantities of biofilm compared to the non-pathogenic ones. Furthermore, it was observed that the ability to produce biofilm appeared to vary, both qualitatively and quantitatively, not only among different species but also among isolates of a single species. Future studies will be necessary to determine whether biofilm production plays a pivotal epidemiological role for the pathogenic avian mycoplasmas.

Abstract

The extraction of mandibular impacted third molars is one of the most common procedures in oral surgery. One of the extraction methods consists of the preparation of a buccal bone lid to obtain access and remove the tooth. This technique aims to reduce bone loss, promote bone healing distal to the second molar, and increase the accessibility to the impacted tooth, particularly in cases of concomitant pathologies or proximity to the mandibular canal. The procedure benefits from the application of 3D printing technologies to produce cutting guides that, combined with piezosurgery, allow deeply impacted third molar extractions with excellent preoperative planning and extreme localisation precision, as well as predictable repositioning and fixation of the bone lid. The objective of this article is to present two clinical cases of the application of the bone lid technique to extract deeply impacted third molars using 3D printed guides with different designs and piezosurgery.

Abstract

The present paper describes and analyzes the recent experimental results obtained at the High Voltage Padova Test Facility (HVPTF), the laboratory aimed at supporting the development of the prototype for the ITER Neutral Beam Injector. Evidences of Electron Stimulated Desorption of gas released from anodic surfaces have been observed during the onset of high voltage Direct Current vacuum discharges between stainless steel electrodes, separated by vacuum gaps of a few millimeters and with voltages of about 200 kV. The count of x-ray photons, produced by the accelerated electrons impinging the anode surface and observed as breakdown precursor in the 40% of the cases, was analyzed together with the images taken by an ultra-high speed camera during the onset of breakdown events. Electron stimulated desorption of neutral gas from the anodic surface appears to be a candidate for the voltage breakdown. The dynamic of the observed phenomena has been compared with the results obtained by a numerical model. The latter assumes a Townsend like discharge which develops following the emission of gas from the anode surface. The comparison shows good agreement between the experimental data and numerical simulations.

Abstract

An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract

Since the end of the last century a lot of research on ductile damage and fracture process has been carried out. The interest and the attention on the topic are due to several aspects. The margin to reduce the costs of production or maintenance can be still improved by a better knowledge of the ductile failure, leading to the necessity to overcome traditional approaches. New materials or technologies introduced in the industrial market require new strategies and approaches to model the metal behavior. In particular, the increase of the computational power together with the use of finite elements (FE), extended finite elements (X-FE), discrete elements (DE) methods need the formulation of constitutive models capable of describing accurately the physical phenomenon of the damaging process. Therefore, the recent development of novel constitutive models and damage criteria. This work offers an overview on the current state of the art in non-linear deformation and damaging process reviewing the main constitutive models and their numerical applications.

Abstract

The paper deals with the numerical investigation and implementation of the two-surface plasticity model (or bounding surface model). This plasticity theory allows to describe the deformation behavior under large strain cyclic plasticity and the material stress-strain responses at small-scale re-yielding after large pre-straining. A novel strategy to model the isotropic hardening stagnation is developed within a fully implicit integration scheme in order to speed up the computation and to improve the material description.

Abstract

Influenza A virus (IAV) can cause high morbidity and mortality in domestic and wild avian species and it is able to infect mammals as well. IAV in cats is sporadic and self-limiting but the recent findings of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) with genetic signatures ofmammalian adaptation, in domestic cats, has raised new concerns about the potential role of cats in the virus ecology. The present study aimed to investigate the circulation of IAV in companion animals' shelters in North-eastern Italy. All samples were collected from feral cats living in feline colonies that were hosted in the companion animals' shelters for the requisite period to administer the veterinary treatments. Between 2021 and 2022, 389 oropharyngeal swabs and 279 sera were collected. All swabs tested negative for IAV and the only one ELISA positive serum sample resulted H5 positive by HI test with a titer of 1:80. Despite the sporadic occurrence of influenza in cats, continuousmonitoring is crucial due to the evolving zoonotic nature of the virus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
